UN report warns of ‘ethnic cleansing’ in Sudan
JUBA, Sudan — A confidential United Nations report warns that the invasion by Sudan’s military of the contested north-south region of Abyei could lead to “ethnic cleansing” if the tens of thousands of residents who fled are not able to return.

The UN human rights report — dated May 29 and marked “Not For Public Citation or Distribution” — said the north’s Khartoum government may have carried out a premeditated military plan to invade Abyei when Sudanese Armed Forces, or SAF, troops moved in May 21.
We sure wouldn't want the public to know about that...
“The SAF attack and occupation of Abyei and the resultant displacement of over 30,000 Ngok Dinkas from Abyei could lead to ethnic cleansing, if conditions for the return of the displaced Ngok Dinka residents are not created,” according to the report, which was obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

The Ngok Dinka is a black tribe that associates itself with Sudan’s south. The Ngok Dinka fled Abyei when northern troops and ethnic Misseriya — Arab cattle herders aligned with the north — moved in and looted homes. The UN report estimated that between 15 percent and 20 percent of the homes in Abyei were burned in what it called “deliberate destruction” and a violation of international humanitarian law.

“By destroying their homes, looting their properties and inspiring fear and terror, over 30,000 Ngok Dinkas have been forcefully displaced from their ancestral homes, leaving the Abyei area now more or less homogeneously occupied by the Misseriya,” it said.

The report said that the likelihood that all the Ngok Dinka residents can return to Abyei “is limited,” given the massive destruction of civilian property and the occupation of Abyei by northern forces.

President Barack Obama’s Homeland Security and Counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, held meetings in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum this week to discuss deteriorating security conditions around Abyei. Princeton Lyman, the US Special Envoy to Sudan, was in the southern capital of Juba on Friday and told AP it was not realistic to have the Ngok Dinka move back into Abyei while it is occupied.

“People who fled out of fear will not be comfortable coming back,” Lyman said. “The key is for the SAF to withdraw with appropriate security arrangements from the UN. Then we know people will be able to safely go back.”
Next he'll tell us how they're going to enforce that. 5 .. 4 .. 3 ..
Tensions over Abyei — a fertile land near major oil fields — has raised fears of conflict only weeks before the south secedes.

The north’s invasion of Abyei was precipitated by a May 19 attack on northern and UN troops by southern soldiers. The UN report said two northern soldiers were killed in that attack, which it called a trigger for the invasion but one that appeared to be a “deliberate plan” by the north “as evidenced by the SAF troop build up in the area before the attack,” the report said.
Sorta like how Poland attacked Germany the night of 31 August, 1939...

Injured Yemeni leader flies to Saudi for care
hmmm - final destination or healing up to continue?
A senior Yemeni official says embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh has flown to Saudi Arabia to be treated for wounds sustained in a rocket attack on his palace a day earlier.
perhaps more serious than alluded?
The government official says early Sunday that Saleh flew to the neighboring kingdom with his family.

Saleh's departure comes after a daring attack that he blamed on rival tribesmen.
Yeow! Look at the time. I've gotta skedaddle!

US House votes to cut DHS budget
[Iran Press TV] The House of Representatives has voted to cut Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget for 2012 as hopes for an economic recovery in the US remain low.

The Republican-held House voted 231 to 188 for the budget cut as part of US President Barack B.O. Obama's deficit reduction plan by $1.1 billion, AFP reported.

"This bill is simply an assault against the progress we've made, protecting the homeland over the past ten years," said Bennie Thompson, member of the Committee on Homeland Security.

He noted that the bill will eliminate some 8,000 jobs, adding to the country's already high unemployment rate.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan to expel US military advisors
[Iran Press TV] US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen says Pakistain is to reduce sharply the number of US military trainers stationed in the country.

Mullen, the US chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined to offer figures on plans to cut the military mission, but said he saw "a very significant cutback."

He also acknowledged that ties between Washington and Islamabad reached a new low after the alleged killing of al-Qaeda leader the late the late Osama bin Laden
... who walked in the shadow of the Valley of the Shadow of Death and didn't make it out...
by US forces on Pak soil.

"There clearly is an ongoing contraction of that support and it is tied to the difficult time we are going through," Mullen told defense news hounds in Washington.

"We're going through a pretty tough time right now and that's going to continue," he said.

The administration of US President Barack B.O. Obama is divided over the future of its relations with Pakistain.

Obama claimed that bin Laden was killed by US forces on May 1 in a hiding compound in Pakistain.

Some White House officials suggest that Islamabad was aware of bin Laden's location, demanding a strong response.

Others, however, believe any retaliatory measure will jeopardize Pakistain's help which they describe as crucial to the US military operations in Afghanistan.

Pak politicians have recently passed a resolution condemning the US raid inside Pakistain that allegedly killed bin Laden, demanding a review of ties with the US and other Western countries.

The resolution also called for an independent probe into the raid, which the Parliament called a unilateral action and a violation of Pakistain's illusory sovereignty.

It warned that the repetition of such attacks could have dire consequences for peace and security in the region and the world.

Flurry of officials startles many in N. Waziristan
[Dawn] The visits of senior civil and military officials to different areas of North Wazoo Agency and inauguration of development schemes after a long period surprised local residents here on Thursday.

Sources said that the visits were meant to convey a message that situation was quite normal and the residents were living peacefully.
Not that anyone believes it, given the news reports of an imminent invasion by the army of the Land of the Pure, but at least it keeps the politicians busy and out from underfoot.
Political Agent Yahya Khan Akhunzada along with Brigadier Azam Tareen and officials of different departments visited Miramshah, Mirali and several main villages and participated in the functions held to inaugurate development programmes in the areas.

According to media reports government has planned a military operation against Taliban and Al Qaeda gunnies in the tribal region.

During the past couple of years, officials of political administration had confined themselves to their offices and avoided visiting public places owing to insecurity. The political agent himself could not travel by road since militancy plagued the agency.

Residents said that after four years they saw bigwigs walking around in bazaars and villages in a relaxed mode without security.

The political agent went to Ghulam Khan and Saidgai areas where he inspected the site specified for a road that would link Indus Highway with the Afghan border. The project will cost Rs5 billion.

Later, he visited Mirali Town where he held meting with elder at the residence of Malik Sher Khan. He also attended a jirga in Miramshah village and met journalists in press club.

Mr Akhunzada on this occasion ruled out military operation in the area and claimed that exemplary peace prevailed in North Waziristan. He urged elders not to pay attention to the media reports about military action, saying that opening of Cadet College Razmak proved that situation was normal. The college was reopened early this week after two years.

US confirms boycott of UN racism summit
WASHINGTON — The United States will not participate in the Durban III UN summit on racism in September this year, which commemorates ten years since the anti Semitic controversial 2001 Durban Declaration conference, officials confirmed Friday.

“We will not participate in the Durban commemoration. In December, we voted against the resolution establishing this event because we believe the Durban process includes displays of intolerance and anti-Semitism, and we don’t want to see that commemorated,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

President Barack Obama’s administration informed lawmakers of the decision earlier this week, joining Canada and Israel in boycotting the event.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said she was “gratified” by the decision. She said it would be “like its predecessors... no doubt be hijacked by extremists and turned into an anti-Western, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic hatefest.”

The commendations were bipartisan, with Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand saying it was “an insult to America that the United Nations has decided to hold the Durban III conference in New York City just days from the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks.”

“We all witnessed how extreme anti-Semitic and anti-American voices took over Durban I and Durban II and we should expect the same thing to happen with Durban III,” she said.

Israel joined the United States in opposing the UN General Assembly resolution in December that convened the follow-up to the 2001 World Conference Against Racism in the South African city of Durban. The resolution passed by 104 votes to 22, with 33 abstentions.

The 2001 conference was marked by hatred bitter disputes and walkouts over plans to include condemnations of Zionism in the final declaration. Israel and the United States walked out complaining of anti-Semitism.

Nine governments — including Canada, the United States, Australia, Israel, Germany and Britain — boycotted last year’s Durban II talks in Geneva over fears of anti-Semitism. Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used the conference as a platform to launch a virulent attack on Israel.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Jordanians demand PM's resignation
[Iran Press TV] Thousands of Jordanians have poured into the streets across the country, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit.

Protesters, who erupted into the streets following the Friday Prayers, accuse the government of failing to fight corruption and adopting political and economic reforms.

They also called for the dissolution of the lower house of parliament and condemned the interference of security forces in state affairs.

"We want to reform the regime in a way that people can rule themselves. Therefore, this requires comprehensive constitutional reforms that insures of an independent parliament and that a majority at the parliament would rule. We want a fair elections law that presents people's will", Rooters quoted Hikmat Rawashdeh, a senior member of the Islamic Action Front
...Jordan's branch of the Moslem Brüderbund...
(IAF) as saying.

"We want an end to meddling of security apparatus in state affairs and combating corruption and corrupts," he added.

Organizers say over 3,000 people took part in the protest rallies on Friday in seven Jordanian cities, including the capital, Amman.

Demands for reform have intensified since a convicted tycoon, who was serving a three-year prison term for bribery and corruption, decamped the country.

Two Cabinet ministers resigned last week over Khaled Shaheen's disappearance from the country.

Jordanian protesters also gathered near the Israeli embassy in the capital and called for an end to Amman's ties with Tel Aviv and stressed the right of Paleostinian refugees to return to their homeland.

"No to an Israeli embassy in an Arab land," the protesters chanted.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
dozens of journalists and activists demonstrated outside the premier's office in the capital to demand the release of the jugged journalist, Alaa Fazzaa, who was placed in durance vile on charges of publishing an article on his website that Amman claims is harmful to the monarchy.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Leb army bans demonstrations near Israel border
"Never mind."
TYRE, Lebanon -- Lebanon has banned all demonstrations near the Israeli border as the Palestinians gear up to mark 44 years since the seizure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the Six Day War, a security official told AFP on Friday.

"The army has taken the decision to ban any demonstration south of the Litani and particularly at the border," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The army will not allow anyone to approach the border."

Palestinians in Lebanon and other Arab states neighbouring Israel had said that they planned to march on the Jewish state's borders on Sunday to mark the anniversary, known in Arabic as the "Naqsa" or "setback."

Ahead of Sunday's anniversary, the Israeli army deployed extra troops along the Lebanese border as well as along the ceasefire lines in the occupied Golan Heights. On Thursday, an AFP correspondent in south Lebanon saw Israeli troops putting up new barbed wire along the border, although the Israeli military refused to comment on the reports.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the army to act firmly but to avoid any bloodshed during any border protests.

"My instructions are clear: to act with restraint but with the determination necessary to protect our borders... and our citizens," he said.

Iran calls for equal wealth distribution
[Iran Press TV] The Iranian president says all the problems existing in the world stem from global mismanagement, which has resulted in unequal distribution of wealth.
Now he's playing Robin Hood for those his policies have made poor?
"As a result of the existing immoral management in the world, most of the wealth is in the possession of a select few and the majority of the people of the world are held back," Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad said on Thursday.
"Even though a minority have created the wealth, and a majority have done nothing to earn the wealth they covet, which we plan to steal from the rightful owners and distribute to the undeserving."
The president said that the wealth amassed in the US and European countries is "not the fruit of their hard work," IRNA reported.
Ah. Not the poor of his nation, but the poor nations. Good luck with that redistribution effort, Mr. President.
"All of this wealth is the result of imposing poverty upon other countries," Ahmadinejad said, adding that "the American and European people are too held captive by the cruelty and injustice of their corrupt leaders."
Yes, but we can vote ours out, unlike your people. Although they did try, and were punished for it by your uniformed thugs...without a peep from our president, I'm ashamed to say.
If the United States' military spending along with the military beget of a few other countries were distributed across the world, there would be no poverty, Ahmadinejad said.
No understanding of economics, that man, which is what comes from spending one's youth memorizing religious literature instead.
The Iranian president also praised late founder of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ruhollah Khomeini, saying the ideas and thoughts of Imam Khomeini will never be forgotten.
Ah-MADMAN-ejad has also been identified as one of the 1979 US Embassy hostage-takers.

He still awaits the "Osama Bin Laden treatment".

"Imam Khomeini's thoughts are divine in nature," Ahmadinejad said on Thursday, ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini.

Pro and Anti Assad Rallies in Downtown Beirut
[An Nahar] Hundreds of supporters of Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
held a sit-in outside al-Omari mosque in downtown Beirut on Friday as anti-Assad protestors rallied inside the mosque against violence in the neighboring country.

The National News Agency said that around 200 people gathered outside the mosque shouting slogans in support of Assad and denouncing a sit-in organized by Hizb ut-Tahrir inside.

According to NNA, 200 people attended Hizb ut-Tahrir's rally.

Last month, the party staged a demonstration in the northern port city of Tripoli in support of Syrian protesters.

NNA said that the army and security forces prevented the two sides from clashing.
