Karzai admits receiving 'bags of money' from Iran
[Dawn] Afghan president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai admitted Monday that his chief of staff had received "bags of money" from Iran but insisted the payment was transparent and a form of aid from a friendly country.
Of course it was 'transparent' -- it was right out in the open ...
Cash payments "are done by various friendly countries to help the presidential office and to help the expenses..." said Karzai at a presser in Kabul.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Karzai's chief of staff, Umar Daudzai, has been receiving regular cash payments from Iran, which is trying to expand its influence in the presidential palace in Kabul.

"The government of Iran has been assisting us with five or six or seven hundred thousand euros once or twice every year, that is an official aid," said Karzai.

"He (Daudzai) is receiving the money on my instructions," he added.

The newspaper, citing unnamed Afghan officials said the payments total millions of dollars and go into a secret fund that Daudzai and Karzai have used to pay Afghan politicians, tribal elders and even Taliban capos to secure their loyalty.

"It's basically a presidential slush fund," one Western official is quoted by the paper as saying. "Daudzai's mission is to advance Iranian interests."

Sudan 'assures' US senator on vote
[Al Jazeera] A leading US senator says Sudanese leaders have assured him they are committed to holding a referendum on southern independence on time.
And if you can't believe the govt of Sudan who can you believe?
John I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Sunday he had met senior Sudanese officials in the north and south during a three-day visit to Africa's largest country. "I received a letter written in clear words confirming that the government of Sudan is committed to conduct southern Sudan referendum on 9th of coming January, and committed to its outcome," Kerry said in Khartoum, the capital.

The vote will decide whether the south will split from the north and become an independent state. The referendum was promised by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which was signed in 2005, ending decades of the north-south civil war.

Under the agreement, the south formed its own government, which has limited autonomy and in which the north has a small representation. South Sudan is represented in the government of national unity, which is led by the Khartoum-based National Congress Party (NCP).

In addition to the broader referendum on the south's independence, a small region called Abyei, which sits astride the oil-rich border between south and north Sudan, will vote on whether it should belong to Southern Sudan or north Sudan.

Playing 'positive role'
Senior officials of the NCP have said it is "not possible" to hold the referendum on the future of Abyei on time and have suggested it be delayed for months or the territorial row be settled without a poll.

Kerry said the US was committed to playing a "positive role" in ensuring a peaceful outcome to the vote. Leaders in Sudan's north and south, he said, faced a "critical choice" between "peaceful co-existence or a return to chaos and war".
I'm guessing they'll go for chaos and war. What's your guess, John F.?
On Saturday, Kerry visited Juba - capital of the semi-autonomous South Sudan - and met officials of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the ruling party. He also met Ali Osman Taha, Sudan's vice-president, and representatives of President Omar al-Bashir's ruling NCP.

Before the visit to the south, Kerry had warned of tougher US sanctions against Sudan if the governments of the north or south placed obstacles in the way of the referendum. Sudan has been under US sanctions since 1997. "I want to be clear: We want the government [in Khartoum] to tackle the referendum and respect the decision of the south," he said.

He also urged the mainly Arab north and Christian and animist south to overcome obstacles to implementing the 2005 peace agreement.

South Sudan is struggling to recover from Africa's longest civil conflict, which was fuelled by ethnicity, ideology, religion and resources such as oil and left an estimated two million people dead.

Egypt bans religious slogans in parliamentary elections
[Al Arabiya] With the parliamentary elections drawing close, the Egyptian government issued a resolution that bans all parties from using religious slogans in campaign in what was perceived as a direct provocation towards the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
... whose motto is "Islam is the Answer"...
The Higher Election Committee issued Sunday a statement imposing several restrictions on candidates while conducting their campaigns in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections on November 28.

According to the statement, of which AlArabiya.net obtained a copy, candidates are obliged to preserve the national unity of Egypt and not to use any slogans or symbols that have a religious reference. Candidates are also not allowed to use places of worship to garner support from voters.
Wot? No rabble rousing in the mosques? Why have them?
Other restrictions included that candidates should refrain from alluding to the private life of their competitors,
"... and it's a documented fact that behind closed doors my opponent is a flaming heterosexual!"
basing their campaigns on race or gender discrimination, and using educational institutions in their campaigning.

Head of the Higher Election Committee, Abdul-Aziz Omar, said the committee will monitor the slogans used by candidates and will cross out the names of those who use religious symbols.

"The committee will submit to the Supreme Administrative Court the names of candidates who violate the regulations and the court will issue an immediate ruling."

Omar explained that the timing of the ruling determines how the election process goes. If the ruling to cross out the candidate's name is issued before the poll starts, election in his/her constituency takes place between the remaining candidates.

If the ruling is not issued by the time the poll starts, the election process takes its normal course without crossing out the candidate's name. However,
The infamous However...
if this candidate gets a number of votes that makes him/her a winner or qualified for a rerun, the committee has the right to stop the announcement of the results until the court issues its ruling.

Yemen Hunting 400 Al-Qaeda Members - Minister
[Yemen Post] Yemen is chasing about 400 Al-Qaeda turbans, including Yemenis and Saudis operating planning murders, sabotage and other destructive plots in some areas of the country, Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al Qirbi said on Saturday.

In an interview with Al-Hayat Newspaper, the minister said, despite the recent terror operations, we can describe the situation in the country as stable because the security authorities are tracking all suspects and criminal gangs, killing, wounding and arresting many of them.
Then his lips fell off.
The situation here is not more dangerous than in any other countries where Al-Qaeda members are in large numbers, including GCC and European countries, he said.
"Just think of us as Lichtenstein without the... whatever Lichtenstein has."
Banks and quiet civilization, I think. And at least one McDonalds.
Unfortunately, media is exaggerating about Al-Qaeda and the situation in Yemen as some are trying to picture Al-Qaeda as a factor destabilizing the country and hampering security, trade and economic processes, he said. "This is untrue, and Al-Qaeda is operating here like it does in other Arab and western countries."
"Really, we're quite sufficiently unstable without their assistance."
Moreover, the Yemeni-Saudi security coordination and cooperation and specially on tackling Al-Qaeda is perfect and it has resulted in blows to Al-Qaeda several times, he said, as he noted that the presence of foreign troops on Yemen's soil is not the suitable solution to root out terrorists.
"We're not sure what is a suitable solution, but we're sure it doesn't involve foreigners sniffin' around our wimmin!"
In this regard, he reiterated that the fight on terror in Yemen is the responsibility of the government and Yemeni people.

Speaking about hosting the 20th Gulf Football Cup, Al-Qirbi said Yemen is determined to host this championship and it assures all Gulf countries the situation is stable and Yemen can secure it.
For a very limited definition of the word secure, that's even true.
His final remark was given on the same day when Prime Minister Mujawar said the GCC countries has already approved that the championship would be held in Yemen as scheduled.
Gulf Arabs are known for their love of picturesque adventure.
Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
hundreds of troops and rustics are now combing mountainous and rugged areas in southeastern province of Shabwa in search of Al-Qaeda operatives. The combing operation is being implemented at very rugged territories where Al-Qaeda tried to use the geographic structure to hide and plan murderous attacks.

Minister spoke at event with terrorist accessories on sale
Paul Goodman, the former Tory MP who shadowed Mr Stunell's brief in opposition and has campaigned against GPU, said: "This evidence demonstrates why no minister should have gone. I hope that Andrew Stunell, the minister who did go, did deliver the robust renunciation we were promised."
This is the convention the Baroness something-or-other was forbidden by the prime minister to attend. Minister Stunell was sent specifically to speak strongly against Muslim extremism.

Juarez News Website Attacked over Video
Google Translate.

La Polaka is the best Spanish lauguage website on the internet about drug crime news in Juarez. It was offline for a good while today. Felt like many Rantburgers feel like when RB is unavailable.

A note: The Gaga reference is La Polaka's to Ms. Gonzalez's haircut and fashion sense, who they say looks like the pop music singer Lady Gaga.

Dunno.

After being offline for several hours today, the Mexican news website La Polaka claimed their website underwent a cyberattack by organized crime.

The website said that the attack took place after it uploaded the video showing the brother of former Chihuahua state attorney general Patricia Gonzalez's brother, Mario Gonzalez, accusing Ms. Gonzalez of being on the payroll of the the criminal gang La Linea.

The website also said that Youtube took down the video just after it was posted. Several websites, however, have uploaded the video subsequently and thus the video is apparently still available for viewing.

Harry Reid Aide Submitted False Documents About Sham Marriage
It's WoT related because her honey was the subject of a terror investigation. Dingy Harry keeps the best company. EFL due to copyright, etc.

If Sharron Angle managed to sit on this one to 7 days before the election then she's a much better politician than I anticipated.
An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid repeatedly lied to federal immigration and FBI agents and submitted false federal documents to the Department of Homeland Security to cover up her illegal seven-year marriage to a Lebanese national who was the subject of an Oklahoma City Joint Terror Task Force investigation, FoxNews.com has learned.

Diana Tejada, Reid's Hispanic Press Secretary, admitted to receiving payment for "some of her expenses" in exchange for fraudulently marrying Bassam Mahmoud Tarhini in 2003, strictly so he could obtain permanent U.S. residency, according to court documents.
There's a fair bit of that going around, and it's a felony. This happened in 2003: say, Diana, did you bother to think that your 'fella', being Lebanese and Arab, might have a background problem? Or was the memory too good?
Tarhini, now 37, was held in jail and at an immigration detention center in connection with his 2009 indictment on felony charges, documents show. He pleaded guilty to entering a fraudulent marriage to evade immigration laws -- a Class D felony -- in November 2009, and he was deported in March 2010.

Tejada, now 28, was never charged for her role in the crime.

"We did not charge the woman, and of course we don't discuss the reasons we don't charge people," said Bob Troester, spokesman for the Western District of Oklahoma U.S. Attorney's Office, which prosecuted the case, which began as an FBI investigation out of the Oklahoma City Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Pro'ly because she rolled over and sang ...
"There's multiple factors that go into charging decisions. She wasn't charged and we can't go beyond that."

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement would not comment on why it took five years to investigate the couple's marriage.
And she doesn't comment on why she didn't divorce the guy until this year.
As recently as five weeks ago, on Sept. 21, 2010, Tejada appeared as a guest on a Spanish-language radio program in her official capacity as a spokeswoman for Harry Reid.

Monday evening, Reid's spokesman Jim Manley said Tejada was no longer employed by Reid's office. When asked when Tejada left Reid's services, the spokesman had no comment.
"Never heard of her! Who?"
Manley provided this statement to FoxNews.com:

"Our office was not previously aware of these allegations and, following an internal investigation, the staffer at issue is no longer with our office. The conduct alleged, which took place several years before the staffer worked for Senator Reid, was clearly wrong. But the bottom line remains that this story was a desperation measure by partisan Republicans, who have stooped to slinging mud about junior staffers to score points in the waning days of her campaign."
As opposed to all the mud-slinging at Ms. Angle; that's completely different, you see ...

Keep reading at the link, you know you want all the sordid details ...
There's a rumour she's working for La Raza now. Lovely friends that Reid fellow has.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan seeks intel sharing to thwart attacks in West
[Dawn] Pakistain on Monday called for greater intelligence sharing to pre-empt terrorist attacks in Britain and other western countries emanating from its soil, just weeks after a Europe-wide security alert linked to the troubled country.
Quick -- tell us who you're hunting so we can hide them from the Predators!
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani proposed cooperation between Pak and British intelligence agencies during talks with visiting British home secretary Theresa May, his office said in a statement.

"The Prime Minister proposed that Pakistain and Britain should consider a mechanism as well as parameters for cooperation between their security agencies," it said.

"He further stressed upon sharing of information and real time intelligence to enable the Pakistain authorities for taking the preemptive measures against any possible threat to UK and other western countries from terrorists,"

Gilani said that "despite daunting challenges Pakistain will continue to fight the menace of terrorism for the sake of peace and prosperity of the world."

He said that poverty, lack of education and under development were the "root causes" of extremism and terrorism.

May was quoted in the statement as saying she "appreciated" Pakistain's efforts and "its role as a bulwark against terrorism to contribute towards the regional and world's stability".

"She said that her government wants to work in a cooperative way with Pakistain on matters relating to counter terrorism..."Al-Qaeda and associated bad boy groups are training young Mohammedans, who hold British passports, in Pakistain's tribal areas, Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper said last month.

They are being taught how to use firearms and explosives in order to carry out shooting sprees in Britain, intelligence sources are cited as saying in the daily paper.

The report came after it emerged that Western intelligence agencies had uncovered an Al-Qaeda plot by Pakistain-based cut-throats to attack Britain, France and Germany, according to security sources and media reports.

Militants were planning simultaneous strikes in London and cities in France and Germany, in attacks similar to those in Mumbai two years ago, British and US media reported.

North Waziristan operation reports upset Taliban
[Dawn] In a surprising development, the local Taliban council has said that bully boyz will move into Afghanistan if the army launches an operation in North Wazoo.

A pamphlet purportedly distributed by the Mujahideen Shura of North Wazoo in Miramshah bazaar on Sunday said that the Taliban would ask Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai to provide shelter to their men if the army launched an operation in North Wazoo.

"If the army starts another operation we will migrate to Afghanistan."

"But this will lead to an unending war in the region and jihad will continue," the pamphlet said.
Yes, but against who? Surely then your Muslim duty would be to conquer the country that attacked you, ie Pakistan. Is there a precedent for jihadi privateers?
The shura said that despite a few incidents, the Taliban would not violate a peace agreement signed with the government in 2007. It said incidents would be investigated
Investigated, but perhaps not stopped?
However,
The infamous However...
the pamphlet said, there was a possibility that the government would launch an operation because of the $2 billon military aid promised by the US.

It urged the people to remain prepared to cope with the situation. "If the government launches an operation for the sake of money the people of Wazoo will collect $2 billion," the pamphlet said and warned against setting up committees against the Taliban.

Iraq
WikiLeaks Show WMD Hunt Continued in Iraq -- With Surprising Results
By late 2003, even the Bush White House's staunchest defenders were starting to give up on the idea that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Not all of us. We just stopped telling you about the evidence you didn't want to hear.
But WikiLeaks' newly-released Iraq war documents reveal that for years afterward, U.S. troops continued to find chemical weapons labs, encounter insurgent specialists in toxins and uncover weapons of mass destruction.

An initial glance at the WikiLeaks war logs doesn't reveal evidence of some massive WMD program by the Saddam Hussein regime -- the Bush administration's most (in)famous rationale for invading Iraq.
One day we'll dig at certain map coordinates in the Bekaah Valley, and then you can be surprised again, 'k?
But chemical weapons, especially, did not vanish from the Iraqi battlefield. Remnants of Saddam's toxic arsenal, largely destroyed after the Gulf War, remained. Jihadists, insurgents and foreign (possibly Iranian) agitators turned to these stockpiles during the Iraq conflict -- and may have brewed up their own deadly agents.

In August 2004, for instance, American forces surreptitiously purchased what they believed to be containers of liquid sulfur mustard, a toxic "blister agent" used as a chemical weapon since World War I. The troops tested the liquid, and "reported two positive results for blister." The chemical was then "triple-sealed and transported to a secure site" outside their base.

Three months later, in northern Iraq, U.S. scouts went to
look in on a "chemical weapons" complex. "One of the bunkers has been tampered with," they write. "The integrity of the seal [around the complex] appears intact, but it seems someone is interesting in trying to get into the bunkers."

Meanwhile, the second battle of Fallujah was raging in Anbar province. In the southeastern corner of the city, American forces came across a "house with a chemical lab ... substances found are similar to ones (in lesser quantities located a previous chemical lab." The following day, there's a call in another part of the city for explosive experts to dispose of a "chemical cache."

Nearly three years later, American troops were still finding WMD in the region. An armored Buffalo vehicle unearthed a cache of artillery shells "that was covered by sacks and leaves under an Iraqi Community Watch checkpoint. "The 155mm rounds are filled with an unknown liquid, and several of which are leaking a black tar-like substance." Initial tests were inconclusive. But later, "the rounds tested positive for mustard."

Al-Qaeda types were blowing up chlorine gas cylinders with high explosives. I remember at the time that it was treated as serious as a heart attack, implying that the good guys were authorized to kill anyone and everyone associated with that scheme.

That's in the rules. We catch you using chemical weapons and you, and everyone around you, are dead. No sense of humor about these things.

#9  Remember when Saddam flew parts of his Air Force to Iran and buried other parts?
Remember when early in the second war there were reports of massive convoys to Syria?
Do you seriously think it unlikely that major WMD wasn't involved?
The Bekaah Valley of the Syrian desert near the Nork reactor site are good guesses.

#11  My platoon uncovered one of the mentioned chemical labs in Falluajh. The CBRN guys and EOD came out and hauled the stuff off. Later they told me it was basically homemade irritants.

#12  This is no vindication, and it's no surprise that the Bush administration didn't tout this. The material was all old, the shells degraded and rusting.
Chemical weapons are relatively easy to manufacture in an industrialized society, and that knowledge wasn't going away.
I just wish Blair hadn't used this so much to justify Britain's participation, because it was way down the ladder in the U.S., and not the reason I supported the war in the first place. Now the American public thinks it was.

#13  Later they told me it was basically homemade irritants.

IEDs are defined as homemade, too. So are the suicide vests and Kassem rockets assembled in the Gaza Strip, the latter from parts made in Iran. So were the explosives my father made for the Haganah before 1948. Anything not made in a big-time factory is labelled "home made".

The difference between factory-made chemical mixtures and home-made chemical mixtures is almost always only the size of the mixing bowl. I used to work for a team that designed improved toothpastes, and I worked with several sizes of those mixing bowls, not much different than the one I use to make chocolate chip cookies at home. The process isn't much different either.

*shrug* Were I making something a bit tricky, I'd go with small batches anyway -- it's easier to control... and much safer if you trip along the way.

#14  The problem with most chemical and biological is effective delivery systems. On paper about 2 kilos of botulinum toxin could potentially kill the world's human population. Fortunately, delivery to achieve that level of kill is practically impossible.

Let's not forget that homemade, and thus much less toxic than militarized, sarin was used in the Tokyo Subway terrorist attack. So, even degraded militarized material is nothing to ignore or not be worried about.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israel 'Invaded' Communications Network during 2006 July War
[An Nahar] Israel has reportedly managed to "invade" Alfa mobile phone operator over a period of 32 days during the July 2006 war.

A Lebanese judicial source told the daily As-Safir in remarks published Monday that preliminary investigation with detained mobile operator staffers Charbel Q. and Tareq R. showed that the Israelis were able to get hold of all Alfa data from the second day of the July war.

This, according to the source, has provided the Israelis, in some cases, with data that allowed them to target individuals and buildings, especially in the southern suburbs and south Leb.
Now is the time when we point and laugh. Let's not mention that the Israelis are even better programmers now, and design an awful lot of the computer chips and things the world uses for all sorts of things, including phone networks.

Terror Networks
Top Terrorist Saif al-Adel Returns to Wazoo and Al Qaeda
Former al-Qaida military chief Saif al-Adel spent the last nine years under house arrest in Iran. He has now returned to Waziristan in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan and appears to have got his old job back. With his help, the weakened terror network could reorganize itself.
