Police: Officer in Missouri shoots, kills man who pulled gun
[Aypee] BERKELEY, Mo. (AP) - St. Louis County police say a man who pulled a gun and pointed it at an officer has been killed in Berkeley, Missouri.

County police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schellman says a Berkeley police officer was conducting a routine business check at a gas station around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday when he saw two men and approached them.

Schellman says one of the men pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired several shots, striking and fatally wounding the man. Schellman says that the second person fled and that the deceased man's handgun has been recovered.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports a group of about 60 people have gathered at the scene. Berkeley is about two miles from Ferguson, where a police officer fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in August.
Appropriate police response. Appropriate ending.

#3  Sorry Charlie.

Black Lives Mattered. Now its vacay with bowling and making cubanos.

But I'm glad the black community has approached the stereotype of the young black male ready to deliver violence at the drop of a hat. Dealt with that one you did.

#5  So I have to ask.

In return for the legalizing of foreign workers taking any entry level jobs of the black community, Obama pledges by show of hand Holder and Sharpton (who has to kiss ass to stay out of jail a la Wesley Snipes) that black violence is ok then at the drop of a titliest sells the whole cause down the river for latinos - again - rich hollywood, and sandy beaches.

Now blacks have the borderline assholes thinking they can get away with violence, especially against police officers, all frothed up.

So now the communities like this which need more attention than ever will have no work available, soon no businesses, young men only able to speak local gangster. You want to talk reparations, your black leaders have paid you reparations, here. Howz it taste, being bought and sold by voter bloc? Abortion mills set up like dog food factories? Just enough government cheese to get by and stifle creativity? How's it feel to have multi-millionaire athletes take what could have been a legitimate grievance and turn it into some pro wrestling publicity meme?

#6  It hasn't been a legitimate grievance in decades. The same lies -- "cops are killing our young black men!" -- led to the 2001 Cincinnati riot. They'd name a dozen cases -- and ten of them were well-documented, defense of self or others. The remainder? Investigations, trials, and appropriate punishments.

Didn't matter. Not supposed to protect yourself against "young black men". Supposed to let them kill you, other people, and do anything they want.

Today's Idiot
A Kentucky woman was checked in at the Gray-Bar Hotel on Wednesday after authorities caught her trying to shoplift merchandise while her son took part in a "Shop with a Cop" event.
"Cops or no cops, they won't see me swipe these."
"Empty your pockets, lady!"
"****!"

Police in Manchester, Kentucky, put the bracelets on Samantha Henson, 26, on Tuesday night and charged her with theft by unlawful taking under $500.

In "Shop with a Cop" programs, which are meant to build positive relationships between the community and police officers, disadvantaged children are given a small amount of money to go on an outing with police and shop for Christmas presents for their family and friends.

Security personnel at the Walmart in Manchester, about 100 miles southeast of Lexington, noticed the woman concealing items under her vêtements, as the French say, during the event. They alerted the police, who were there to help more than 80 children with their holiday shopping.
"And who'd be imbecile enough to try to steal stuff right under a bunch of cops' noses?"
The arresting officer, Jeff Couch, said he found earrings and other jewelry on Henson. He valued the merchandise at about $40.

Henson is being held in the Clay County Clink.

Feds Bust Alleged Delta Airlines Gun-Smuggling Ring
[ABsee] Four men have been charged in an alleged gun-running operation in which weapons were smuggled from Atlanta to New York in a passenger's carry on luggage on board passenger jets, federal officials said today.

According to an arrest warrant filed in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Georgia, Eugene Harvey, a ramp agent/baggage handler for Delta Airlines, was charged with gun-trafficking and entering an airport in violation of security requirements.
Yes, of course they are, and this on top of the U.S. Custom Agent smuggling guns and drug money.

#2  Rooters update: Gun smuggling scheme went on for years.

Henry was arrested after arriving in New York, and federal agents took Harvey into custody at his Atlanta-area home on Dec. 20, Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman Stephen Emmett said on Tuesday.

"Henry has been smuggling guns on commercial airliners for years, for at least five years," said Kenneth Thompson, district attorney for New York's borough of Brooklyn, whose office worked on the investigation.

Arabia
55kg heroin seized, two arrested in Ras Al Khaimah
[Khaleej Times] The Anti-Narcotics Department of the Ras Al Khaimah Police recently seized 55kg of heroin, the largest amount of narcotics ever confiscated in the emirate.

According to a police source, the contraband worth over Dh26 million as per the street market price was found in possession of two Asian residents.

"The anti-narcotics police, alerted about the drugs, set a trap, and tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
the first suspect with 55kg of heroin, all packed and concealed in the boot of the car he was travelling in." The second suspect was also apprehended later based on a tip-off that he was the accomplice of the first suspect.

"Both of them were referred to the RAK Public Prosecution which charged them with smuggling and possessing drugs with the intent of trafficking."

The duo denied the charges and claimed that they were only transporting white cement to someone in a nearby emirate for Dh200, he noted.

"However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the accused failed to identify the person whom he claimed to have handed him the contraband close to a land border checkpoint."

The prosecutors asked the accused to identify the destination of the drugs, as well as the sender and intended receiver if they were not aware of the contraband but they could not.

The case was referred to the RAK Criminal Court which adjourned the case to next month for the defence lawyer to study the case and examine the prosecution witnesses.

Sliding oil prices leave socialist Venezuela on brink of financial collapse
[WASHINGTONTIMES] The ongoing plunge in global oil prices is pushing Venezuela toward economic collapse just as President Nicolas Maduro -- the hand-picked successor to the late socialist Hugo Chavez -- faces mounting international criticism for jailing opposition figures after months of street protests.

Where Chavez once drew praise from the world's leftist elite for using the high price of crude oil during the 2000s to underwrite a socialist revolution, a growing number of analysts in Washington say Mr. Maduro is clinging to power in a country on the edge of becoming a failed state.

Venezuela still boasts some of the world's largest known crude reserves, but it has continued for too long spending more on government programs than it has collected in oil revenue, analysts say. The average price of oil has dropped from more than $100 a barrel to less than $60 during recent weeks, only adding to Venezuela's woes.

A teleconference including the presidents of Russia, Germany and France has led to renewed preliminary talks about the Minsk Ceasefire agreement, it is being reported in Russian language news accounts.

A report in verti-ukr.ru said that a brief Skype teleconference settled on two more meetings-- Wednesday and Friday -- between the President of Ukraina, Piotr Poroshenko, the President of Russian, Vladimir Putin, the president of France Francois Hollande and the chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel over the issues of prisoner exchanges and humanitarian relief for civilians residing in he war zone.

As of this moment none of the representatives of the two breakaway republic of Donetsk and Lugansk have commented on the meeting, nor have they made any demands for further talks.

Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin reported said that the main issue in the talks surround the worsening humanitarian situation in southeastern Ukraine. Yesterday it was reported that industrial production for the region was down by about 30 percent. Added to that, Poroshenko stopped payments to pensioners in the region as part of its "economic blockade".

Indications are that the humanitarian situation is so bad, even the Ukrainians are considering sending relief supplies into the region.

Rebel media is reporting that basic needs of civilians suffering are being met through a scrip system established by the rebel government of Lugansk and Donetsk, although reports do not make clear if the system is region wide or just in major towns.

Reports sympathetic to the Russian backed rebels are that rebel units are aiding civilians in their area of operation, although it is not clear the provenance of the aid. A few days ago Russia sent in its 10th humanitarian relief convoy into the region.

Talks on further resolving the civil war have clearly stalled with the rebel demanding a restoration of pensions payments among other demands, including the lifting of the economic embargo of the region.

Fighting in Lugansk and Donetsk

According to data supplied by former FSB Colonel Igor Girkin, Ukrainian artillery units have been shelling points in Donetsk city as late as Tuesday, including the Kuibyshevsky district of the city and at the airport, where a months long standoff between Ukrainian troops and rebel units continues. A resident said that artillery firing from the Ukrainians continued for almost 20 minutes.

The pro rebel Voice of Sevastopol reported that small arms and artillery fights took place at Peski on Sunday, where the Ukrainian Army has sited artillery. Rebels reported artillery was firing from Opytnoye and Peski. The rebels said they did not return fire. The engagement at Peski was said to have lasted several hours.

Also on Sunday, rebels reported Ukrainian artillery fire at Gorlovka -- northeast of Donetsk city --, which has been especially hot recently.

Near Stanitsa Luganksaya in Lugansk, rebels said Ukrainian artillery hit the nearby settlements of Sokolniki and Prishib, and on points along T1303.

On Monday the fighting at Peski continued, according to the Voice of Sevasotpol, where rebels and Ukrainian military units exchanged small arms, mortar and RPG fire. The rebels said they moved reinforcements towards the front to counter a Ukrainian mobile threat, said to be a local reconnaissance in force operation.

Artillery fire was reported in Kievsky, Petrovskiy and Kuibyshevsky districts by locals.

In Lugansk on Monday, rebels reported five separate artillery attacks, none of which they said their side responded to. Another artillery strike was fired by Ukrainian along highway T1303. Ukrainian artillery reported was fired at locations in the town of Slavyanoserbsk, which is on the right bank of the Northern Donetsk River, and less than five kilometers west of Schastye, which is a Ukrainian stronghold. That artillery fire the rebels said they did respond to.

According to pro Ukrainian military journalist Dmitri Tymchuk, rebels are concentrating their units along highway T1303 including a company tactical group and an artillery group.

Tymchuk also reported that additional units from Andrei Mozgovoi's "Ghost" Brigade were being sent into the region to include a total of 600 effectives, seven tanks, a mixed artillery battalion, a rocket artillery battery -- probably BM-21 Grad -- and about 25 armored fighting vehicles.

Fifth Column
Jane Fonda to build shrine of herself
Anyone up for a beer bust?
Even Jane Fonda needs a reminder of her fabulousness.

At 77, the actress is building a “shrine” to herself that she hopes will boost her recently faltering confidence.

“I’ve found myself backsliding a bit of late in terms of where my thoughts have tended to reside (not always with the generosity of vision I wish for) and my confidence has been iffy for the past four months,” the stunning star wrote in a blog post Sunday, her 77th birthday.

“So, while meditating today an idea came to me: I’m going to create a shrine to myself – or, at least, the self I wish to be, the self who began to manifest when I was a young girl before the s–t hit the fan,” she continued.

The “shrine” will be a small place filled with items that remind Fonda of “the qualities that represent my best self.” So far, she plans to include a certificate of participation in grade school soccer school report from the fourth grade.

She’ll spend the new year collecting objects and symbols that “remind me that I’m brave.”

“I’ve been forgetting that,” she revealed.

India-Pakistan
Tribal armed group kill 40 in NE India
[Xinhua] At least 40 people, including 10 women and 13 children, were killed by a rebellious tribal gang in different places in the northeastern Indian state of Assam on Tuesday, said government officials.

Assam's additional director general of police Pallab Bhattacharya told the media that Bodo tribal gunnies killed at least 40 in at least five villages. He said the corpse count could rise.

The attacks were launched by a group called the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which is opposed to peace talks with the government.

The blood bathing took place in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of the state as a response to the intensified operation by the security forces, said police.

Police Sunday killed two Bodo murderous Moslems in neighboring Chirang district.

Some rebel groups are waging an insurgency against the Indian government in the restive northeastern region of the country, where the populations are ethnically different from other parts of India.

Home Front: Culture Wars
50 more NY Times journalists to be fired
A long piece about the Times' travails after the December 1st buyout offer.
Yesterday, New York Times readers were treated to a beautifully nuanced and balanced and richly detailed feature about a topic very much in the mix. Its author, Ariel Kaminer, came by her story and its scoop—the first interview with the accused (possibly falsely) rapist of the woman at Columbia who is carrying a mattress around campus to make a statement about campus sexual violence--by developing deep roots in a narrow beat, higher education. And now, Ms. Kaminer will join a hundred or so of her colleagues on the unemployment line as the Times once again cuts costs by cutting journalists.

The genius of the way The New York Times has structured itself is that lofty journalistic goals are protected from the short-term demands of grubby ordinary shareholders.
But not from grubby progressive academics, politicians and well-to-do elites...
Ironically–and distressingly, for those who care about journalism--it now appears that the financial demands of those holding the shares, and particularly the generous dividend they pay to the family members who hold large chunks of those shares, are now making it difficult to perform the very journalism the structure was created to protect.

Monday, December 1 marked the deadline for 100 New York Times journalists to accept a buyout package before facing layoffs. As the New York Times prepares for the latest culling of the most talent-rich newsroom in America, the sad march has already begun. David Corcoran, a Times near-lifer who runs the beloved Science Times section, has reportedly accepted a buyout, as have legendary business reporters Floyd Norris and Bill Carter, labor reporter Steven Greenhouse, arts reporter Carol Vogel, staff editor Jack Bell, plus at least six photographers and picture editors, the silky writer Robin Finn (who penned this masterpiece), and about 50 others, according to Capital New York’s depressing “buyout watch” column. The Observer reported that longtime advertising writer Stuart Elliott was among those joining the exodus. And now, firings have commenced.
