Yemeni counter-opinion on "Nothing New in Baghdad" piece
Edited for brevity.
By Amin Al-Sharabi

When I read Abdul-Qawi Dhahan's opinion piece entitled "Nothing new in Baghdad" last week, I couldn't control my laughter. His article compares the Iraq of today to the Iraq of Abassayid times, Saddam Hussein, that old ousted dictator, to Al-Moatasim the great Caliph, and the Muslim ruling system to the unseated Baathist regime.

He also compared the Tatar Mogul army to the US Marines and 3rd Infantry Division headed by the retiring Gen. Tommy Franks.

I think that the writer would have been better off comparing the Baathist regime to the Pashas who, like Saddam, eliminated anyone they suspected of being an enemy. Saddam's regime was the worst Iraq has ever known. If he had even been compared to the Tatars who destroyed everything in their way, it wouldn't have seemed strange. They were all enemies of Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a leader who used chemical weapons against his own nation, just because he was in a bad mood.

I am surprised how writers from other Arab states have dared to speak for the Iraqi people, arguing that Iraqis didn't want the US to interfere in their affairs. Imagine you are about to be beheaded while your own brothers just watch and say to those who are come to your rescue, "Don't interfere in the internal affairs of my brother."
