-Short Attention Span Theater-
Sonny Nicole Smith cleared for planting
A death certificate has been issued clearing the way for the funeral of Daniel Wayne Smith but it sheds no light on the cause of death. In two other developments in The Bahamas, news is that an inquest may not be held into his death and the Coroner's Court has been disbanded with immediate effect.

“The cause of death is recorded as "pending chemical analysis" which officials in Nassau say was not unusual...”
Daniel Wayne, son of American actress and model, Anna Nicole Smith, can now be laid to rest. His body which has been laying in a funeral home in Nassau since September 10 is being prepared for burial. That is because a death certificate has now been issued. The cause of death is recorded as "pending chemical analysis" which officials in Nassau say was not unusual to allow for funeral arrangements to proceed. The first of three toxicology tests show traces of the antidepressant Lexapro and sleeping medication Ambien, but not in doses high enough to cause sudden death, Anna Nicole's attorney Howard K. Stern said.

#4  Ambien and Lexapro at normal dosages shouldn't cause any problems, either separately or together. Now if Lexapro were just the wrong seratonin reuptake inhibitor, the lad might have been made suicidally depressed (it's amazing the different responses that may result in an individual from the subtle chemical differences in the various SSRI formulas, and how quickly a change occurs when a different pill is taken), but nobody seems to be suggesting that he suicided. Something is decidedly queer.

Africa North
Follow Libya's 'correct Islam'
TRIPOLI: Libyan leader Mummar Gaddafi was quoted by the official Libyan news agency late on Thursday as suggesting that Muslims should take their cue from "Libya's correct Islam" and begin fasting on Saturday. "People in Arab and Muslim countries are turning to Libya to know when Ramazan begins and ends because Libya is the state that observes the correct Islam without sects," said Gaddafi, quoted by Jana. Libya's constitution is officially based on the Quran but in practice the government's policy is inspired by Gaddafi's Green Book which advocates a complex mix of liberalism and socialism.

Africa Subsaharan
Zim-Bob-We: Rule of law vital to economic turnaround
(IRIN) - The rule of law is vital to getting Zimbabwe's economy back on track, according to a senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official.
I'd put the odds of the actual rule of law suddenly appearing in Zim at somewhere between minuscule and non-existent...
Optimist ...
Changes in economic policy and exchange market reforms might help lower the inflation rate, commented Siddarth Tiwari, deputy director of the IMF's African department, but "the rule of law is an important part" of restoring business confidence in the country. "If you do not convince the private sector, [economic reforms] are not going to work."
Thre's a reason they call Zim a "kleptocracy." Only someone with serious cranial damage would throw his wallet into a den of thieves...
Zimbabwe's ruling party, in power since independence in 1980, has come under international criticism for its heavy-handed response to opposition, deepening political divisions.
That, and stealing everything that's not nailed down...
The annual inflation rate is currently around 1,200 percent - the highest in the world - but the IMF has warned it could shoot past 4,000 percent next year if current policies are maintained. Shortages of foreign currency to pay for fuel, food and other commodities, and 70 percent unemployment have accelerated the economic meltdown. The IMF's global economic outlook, unveiled this month, pegged gross domestic product at -4.7 percent - the lowest on the continent - but a slight improvement from -5.1 percent last year.

Arabia
Yemeni Opposition Threatens to Seethe
SAN'A, Yemen (AP) - Yemeni opposition parties threatened Friday to call a massive street protest to dispute partial election results that show their presidential candidate losing by a wider margin than expected.

The threat came amid more allegations of fraud in Wednesday's elections, which pitted incumbent President Ali Abdullah Saleh against his most serious challenger since he came to power in 1978 - former oil executive Faisal bin Shamlan.

Late Thursday, elections commission spokesman Abdu al-Janadi said Saleh had so far won 3.4 million votes, compared with just 880,000 for bin Shamlan out of roughly 5 million cast. The partial results were based on votes counted from 17,000 of the 27,000 total ballot boxes. Election results are expected by Saturday, but it is not clear whether a formal announcement will come in view of the disputes.

Europe
Tymoshenko forms opposition bloc in parliament
(Xinhua) -- Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko announced on Friday that an opposition bloc in parliament has been formed with two defectors from the Socialist Party. At a meeting on Friday, Tymoshenko was elected as the head of the new bloc.

Five parties shared the 450 parliamentary seats in the general elections held on March 26, 2006. In August, the majority coalition comprising parliament members from the Regions Party, the Socialist Party and the Communists nominated Viktor Yanukovych as prime minister. Ukrainian President accepted the nomination and Viktor Yushchenko subsequently formed his cabinet. The opposition bloc now has 123 seats in the 450-seat parliament.

Olde Tyme Religion
Indonesia: Christians riot over executions
Christians angered by the executions yesterday of three Roman Catholic militants in the world's most populous Muslim country torched cars and government buildings, looted shops and attacked a jail, freeing hundreds of inmates. The men faced a firing squad at 1:45 a.m. in Palu for a massacre at an Islamic school six years ago. The executions took place despite an appeal by Pope Benedict XVI to spare the men.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla appealed for calm following yesterday's sectarian violence, which left at least five persons injured. He said the executions had nothing to do with religion.

Fabianus Tibo, 60, Marinus Riwu, 48, and Dominggus da Silva, 42, were convicted of leading a Christian militia that carried out a series of attacks in May 2000 -- including a machete and gun assault on an Islamic school that left at least 70 persons dead. The attack on the school was one of the worst incidents during sectarian violence that swept Sulawesi province from 1998 to 2002. At least 1,000 persons from both faiths were killed. Only a few Muslims were ever punished for their part in the unrest, and none was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison.

Although the government insists Tibo and his associates were given a fair trial, crowds of Muslim hard-liners gathered at the court during the hearings, intimidating judges, attorneys and witnesses. "The men's lawyers received death threats, including a bomb planted at one lawyer's house, and demonstrators armed with stones outside the courthouse demanded that the three be sentenced to death," said Isabelle Cartron of London-based Amnesty International.

Yesterday's violence took place on Sulawesi and the nearby islands of Flores and Timor, which are dominated by Christians. Although Christians make up less than 10 percent of the country's population, they are roughly half the population in the country's east. Palu, the capital of Sulawesi province, was largely calm. But violence raged in the Sulawesi villages of Tentena and Lage, where hundreds of Christians went on a rampage, torching cars and police posts after learning of the executions. On the island of Flores, the condemned men's birthplace in East Nusatenggara province, machete-wielding youths terrorized residents and tore apart the local parliament building. Thousands also rallied to protest the executions.

On West Timor, more than 200 inmates escaped after mobs assaulted a jail in the town of Atambua, sending guards fleeing into the jungle. By midday only 20 prisoners had been recaptured, police said.

The bodies of Tibo and Riwu were placed on police helicopters and flown to their village of Beteleme in Sulawesi's Morowalai district for burial. Da Silva was buried in Palu, but his supporters returned to the graveyard late yesterday to dig up his body, saying they wanted to substitute his government-issued clothing and coffin with their own.

#6  That's a HILARIOUS piece of satire!!

Does anyone remember when the Star Wars Episode IV prequel came out, people ran around (seriously) saying it was racist because the trade federation looked and sounded a bit 'japanese', and the gungans sounded stoopid and 'black'.
Despite them all being aliens.

alien latex and cgi.

You will note this kind of 'your racist' threat in movie criticism HAS changed the landscape.

In the biggest blight on Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy films was that he gave the Orcs British accents.

This is despite that he made massive attempts to stay close to the book with elvish. The elves spoke elvish.

The orcs should have spoken orcish, full of harsh sounds like 'grishnakh' and 'lugburz' and 'garn' and weilded curved swords like scimitars.

A different race they would have sounded linguistically very different to the British-accented hobbits.

But he obviously didn't want to be accused of being 'racist' if anybody decided they looked too Turkish or middle eastern or any other variety of human.

So make them sound British and violate the books (Tolkein was fascinated with languages and took great pains to make the internal logic and language families of his books make sense.

That's also why Hollywood won't make a terrorist fictional flick with middle eastern terrorists after 9/11: That arnold schwartzenegger film was the last one i can remember, made before 9/11.

Now the villains must be neo-nazis, or white businessmen or corporations or the US government, or a rogue officer in the police or military, white of course.

Because nobody can call you racist then, right?

Pakistani wins US political asylum
NEW YORK: A Pakistan-born young man who has lived in the US most of his life after travelling here to see his dying mother was granted political asylum by an immigration judge. Mohammad Safaraz Hussain, 21, may remain in the US because it is reasonable to assume that, because of his Western political views, he could be a target of fundamentalists in Pakistan who would use him as a poster child for anti-American views, immigration Judge Patricia Rohan said on Thursday.

Hussain came to the US in 1993 to see his mother, who was dying of cancer and remained at his uncle’s home. In 2003, after new laws required male non-citizens over the age of 16 from Arab and Muslim countries to register with the US government, Hussain, who was attending a New York City high school, reported to immigration officials and was told he was in the country illegally and faced deportation. Students circulated petitions and Hussain’s basketball coach and US Congressman Gary Ackerman lobbied on his behalf, and his status was reviewed. Hussain said on Thursday he felt relieved but exhausted. “I just want this to be over,” he said. “I want to make plans for my future and not worry about whether I’m getting shipped away.” “I don’t know what I would do if I had to go back,” he said. “There is nothing for me there; my life is here.”

Hussain’s mother was sponsored for immigration to the US in 1984, the year of his birth, by Ahmed. As a minor, Hussain would have shared her status. But she developed colon cancer before the proceedings were complete and travelled to the US on a tourist visa for treatment. She died before her immigration status changed.
