Some Makkah buildings possessed by jinns, say residents
[Emirates 24/7] Some abandoned buildings and undeveloped areas in the holy city of Makkah have been possessed by jinns (genies) with incidents of stone thrown at people from abandoned houses, according to eyewitness reports.

A report in Arab News said residents had to vacate these buildings and houses after supernatural forces scared them .

Majdi Habeeb, a resident of Makkah, told the newspaper that there are rumours that these forces either attacked the residents or frightened them by making noises and causing fires till they leave the place.

Another resident Turki Al Hussein said: "The other day, I saw my neighbour and his family leaving their old house at midnight. They were in a bewildered state. When I asked them why they were leaving, they said people would not believe them if they gave the real reason. When some of the neighbours entered the house, stones were hurled at them. There were also some big cats and birds such as owls hovering above their head. They also heard some strange noises and that forced them to run away from the house."

The house has been abandoned by residents.

Muhammad Al Suhali, Director of Islamic Studies Centre at Umm Al Qura University in Makkah, said jinns do things like scaring people as it's confirmed by the Holy Koran.

"There are believers and non-believers among the jinns. Those who cause trouble include both Mohammedan and infidel jinns. There could also be differences in the types of harm caused by them. There are jinns who set fires inside a house or those who make frightening noises in order to create panic and confusion," he said.

But people also alleged that some property developers are spreading these rumours in order to reduce prices and then buy them at lower rates. A real estate company official told Arab News that some businessmen were exploiting the situation to reduce the prices of buildings and plots of land.

Bangladesh
Journo's house ransacked
[Bangla Daily Star] The officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station was removed yesterday for raiding the house of the journalist he beat up on Thursday.

Hours before his removal, Tanore police recorded an extortion case against Imran Hossain, Tanore upazila correspondent of Rajshahi-based daily Sonar Desh.

The assault on the journalist came a day after his report on corruption of the local police administration was published.

OC Azizur Rahman Sarker was closed to the Rajshahi police line after he sent coppers to raid Imran's house, said SM Rokon Uddin, district superintendent of police.

The OC was warned following his attack on the journalist and the Additional SP Emran Ali was asked to investigate the matter, added the SP.

Imran's wife Tahmina Yasmin told The Daily Star that six coppers led by Sub-Inspector M Solaiman came to their house around 1:00am. As it was the dead of night and Imran was not at home, she refused to open the door.

"When they started banging on the door with rifle butts, my father-in-law let them enter the house."

The coppers ransacked the house but did not say why they were doing so, said Tahmina.

"My six-year-old son was sleeping and they [coppers] pulled the bed in such a way that my child was about to fall."

Tahmina's child Nagib Mahfuz was running a temperature as the police activities sent him into a panic.

Contacted, SI M Solaiman refuted the allegations of ransacking and hurling abuses. He said he went to the house as he was appointed as investigation officer of an extortion case against Imran.

The plaintiff of the case is Delwar Hossain, owner of a mobile customer care shop just in front of the cop shoppe.

In the case statement, he alleged that Imran demanded Tk 20,000 toll from him on July 11. And that Imran bought a computer table from him for Tk 10,000 six months ago but later refused to pay the price.

Asked why he filed the case so late, Delwar said he used to give Imran Tk 100 to Tk 2,000 at different times as Imran used to threaten to write against him. "When he wrote about me, I lodged the case."

Imran, however, said Delwar's allegations are baseless and fabricated
Tut tut! Made up out of whole cloth, I assure you, including the pictures!
and came after the report's publication on Wednesday.

Talking to The Daily Star, Akbarul Hasan Millat, Sonar Desh executive editor, said Imran in his report mentioned that the OC employed some middlemen across the upazila for collecting bribes.

Without naming the person, the report says a mobile businessman of the Thana Mor is one of the main middlemen. Millat said the report alludes to Delwar.

China-Japan-Koreas
China's space program shoots for moon, Mars, Venus
[Dawn] This year, a rocket will carry a boxcar-sized module into orbit, the first building block for a Chinese space station. Around 2013, China plans to launch a lunar probe that will set a rover loose on the moon. It wants to put a man on the moon, sometime after 2020.

While the United States is still working out its next move after the space shuttle program, China is forging ahead. Some experts worry the US could slip behind China in human spaceflight _ the realm of space science with the most prestige.

"Space leadership is highly symbolic of national capabilities and international influence, and a decline in space leadership will be seen as symbolic of a relative decline in US power and influence," said Scott Pace, an associate NASA administrator in the George W. Bush administration. He was a supporter of Bush's plan _ shelved by President Barack Obama _ to return Americans to the moon.

#1  Not that they might not do it, but the Chinese and Russian are always proclaiming great space plans that are never followed through until the next time they make a different announcement.

#2  rjschwarz, can you tell we who launched the first (artificial) satellite, put the first man in space? Who has space station, now. You see, the thing about autocratic, nationalist regimes is that---occasionally---they pursue long national interest.

#3  ..you know how many American billions [much of which disappeared] went into propping up the Russian space program in the 90s? Had that not happen the last shuttle would have been turning out the lights as they departed. To turn around a phrase from the Right Stuff - No bucks, no Buck Rodgers.

#4  Our long term interests in space will be much better served by private entrepreneurs who can respond to the market or go bankrupt when they don't than by an ossifying bureaucracy that can no longer do what it could 50 years ago.

#5  well, it's nice that their space program is actually focusing on things like, sayyyyy SPACE, rather than "reaching out to the Muslim world"

#6  We have ceded much of our manufacturing to China. We borrow money so we can buy stuff from China. They are getting wealthier and wealthier and we are getting broker and broker and in debt to China. No wonder we are making our last venture into space. We will have to rent from the Russians, rely on the Chinese, or private business. Our space program has become a feel-good program to build muslim self-esteem. Our government has spent us into economic chaos.

#8  ..wasn't so much fools for providing the Russians the cash as much as continuing the program that had no functional justification but ego.

#9  I see little commercial opportunities in space travel, save giving space taxi rides to wealthy dumbassess. It is an will be primarily a military zone to be controlled for a long time.

#10  Hey BigJim hows that job working out. I wondered when you would drop in. "Que Sera Sera the futures not ours to see". The futures one day at a time thank goodness. The future is in space. I'm a big H. G. Wells fan and Jules Vern. That day will come if we survive this day. We must reach for the stars.
To be everything we could be and never ending.

#11  g(r)omgoru, the Soviet Union has a lot of space history to be proud of. But in the last decade they have proclaimed Mars missions and any number of other schemes they had no money or will to follow up on. Same goes for China. Its nice to see them getting men up into space and all but claims of Mars and Venus are just propaganda for a domestic audience and a world with a short attention span.
Posted by: rjschwarz || 07/16/2011 19:59 Comments || Top||

#12  I don't like this idea of poten long lead times between post-Shuttle US programs - too easy for ous Space Boyz-Gals to forget + lose vital skills.

I stil would like for NASA-JPL in to inquire about bringing the Soviet shuttles ENERGIA + BURAN back to CONUS, refurbish or rewire 'em, + then use them finally for the ISS, etc.

#13  The space program is a waste of money until we have a cheap means of propulsion. This is the equivalent of trying to discover the Indies, back in the day, using muscle-powered Mediterranean galleys. Lavish funding to check out the military possibilities when the Soviets were investigating that frontier made sense - it wouldn't have done to have them steal a march. My sense is that we'll have to pay careful attention to what the Chinese are doing - if it is militarily significant, we may have to gin up yet another moon-landing-style effort to prevent them from obtaining a military advantage.
