...that would be measured in 'rocks' or 'hits'. If they want that day to day stuff, they'll just break into someone's house to get what they need. Then it just becomes another police report. However, if you touch anyone's stash, they don't call the police until you're cold enough to be a subject of a 48 Hours episode.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
40 Psychiatric Patients Escape From Kenya Hospital
[BREITBART] Ten of 40 mentally ill patients who escaped from a psychiatric hospital in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, have been returned to the facility, officials said Monday.

"We are now talking of 30 mental patients who are not back. Some have come back on their own volition while some were captured and brought back by their relatives," police chief Samuel Anampiu said.

Anampiu said two of the escapees went back to the hospital voluntarily while eight others were returned by their families.

The patients overpowered guards and forced open the door of their ward in the Mathari Mental Hospital on Sunday morning.

"Many scaled over the wall and went through Mathare area and a few confident ones used the main gate. When they are traced they should be brought back for their medication," Anampiu said, adding that all those who escaped were men.

The police chief said that the breakout must have been well planned for it to have had that level of success.

"They must have strategised. It is not possible that without proper planning 75 people can break two doors and more than half of them run away," he explained.

Kevin Kemboi, an escapee who was returned to the facility by family members, said he escaped after another patient told him that the hospital nurses were on strike.

"I just followed one of the patients ... then made my way home. At home I realised the environment was different. I felt like I was being disturbed by snakes and decided to go back. It is the place I need to be," he said before breaking down into tears.

U.N. Says: Let them eat bugs!
[An Nahar] The U.N. has new weapons to fight hunger, boost nutrition and reduce pollution, and they might be crawling or flying near you right now: edible insects.

The Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets.

A 200-page report, released at a news conference at the U.N. agency's Rome headquarters, says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals, and have environmental benefits.

Insects are "extremely efficient" in converting feed into edible meat, the agency said. On average, they can convert 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of feed into 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of insect mass. In comparison, cattle require 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of feed to produce a kilo of meat.

Most insects are likely to produce fewer environmentally harmful greenhouse gases, and also feed on human and food waste, compost and animal slurry, with the products being used for agricultural feed, the agency said.

Currently, most edible insects are gathered in forests and what insect farming does take place is often family-run and serves niche markets. But the U.N. says mechanization can ratchet up insect farming production. The fish bait industry, for example, has long farmed insects.

Insect farming is "one of the many ways to address food and feed security," the food agency said.

"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly," the agency said, adding they leave a "low environmental footprint." They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and are "particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children," it said.

Insects can also be rich in copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and are a source of fiber.

The agency noted that its Edible Insect Program is also examining the potential of arachnids, such as spiders and scorpions, although they are not strictly speaking insects.

University biologists have analyzed the nutritional value of edible insects, and some of them, such as certain beetles, ants, crickets and grasshoppers, come close to lean red meat or broiled fish in terms of protein per gram (ounce).

But are they tasty?

The report noted that some caterpillars in southern Africa and weaver ant eggs in Southeast Asia are considered delicacies and command high prices.

And some people who might not entertain the thought of consuming insects might already be eating them. Many insects are ingested inadvertently.

#2  isn't this why the Bees + other are in trouble, ala POOR GENETIC SECURITY, BREEDING due to defective mass production methods + oversight???

JosephM, an argument recently has been made that taking all the honey from the hive and feeding the overwintering bees with a corn syrup substitute is weakening them enough that ever-present health threats become overwhelming. At any rate, in the past week or so several large feral hives have been found around the country, and they were thriving -- unaffected by the problems plaguing domesticated hives. This is not, of course, proof, but it certainly is suggestive.

Africa Subsaharan
U.N.: First Intervention Brigade Troops Arrive in DR Congo
[An Nahar] The first troops belonging to an intervention brigade aimed at taking on gangs in strife-torn eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
have arrived for their mission, a United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
official said Monday.

About a hundred soldiers arrived in the bustling provincial capital of Goma at the weekend, Alex Essome of the U.N. force in DR Congo said. They are part of a 1,280 man force from Tanzania that is set to be deployed in the area "in the coming days".

The U.N. Security Council created the intervention brigade of more than 3,000 troops after an offensive by rebel group M23 last November which saw Goma briefly fall into rebel hands.

Aside from Tanzania, the special force will also be made up of troops from South Africa and Malawi.

The U.N. already has 17,000 troops in DR Congo, officially known as MONUSCO, and is one of the biggest U.N. missions in the world with more than 17,750 troops and military observers and 1,400 police.

While MONUSCO has a mandate to protect civilians, the intervention brigade is the first to be given an offensive mandate.

Nigeria: ATMs Dispense Fake N1000 Notes
[Nigerian Tribune] THERE is a disturbing development in the banking industry as some banks' Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) now dispense counterfeit currencies, particularly the N1000 notes, which is the highest denomination in the country.

A drama played out last week in Lagos when a customer who withdrew money from an old generation bank went to another bank few metres away to deposit part of the money in another bank, but was shocked when the cashier told him that some of the N1000 notes were fake. Efforts to explain the source of the money were rebuffed. The cashier and customers in that bank confirmed that the development was not strange but was now becoming rampant.

Another victim who withdrew some amount of money from an ATM in Ibadan was stunned when he was told by a cashier in his office, in an attempt to make some deposit, that two of the one thousand naira notes were fake.

Efforts by Nigerian Tribune to get response from the affected banks proved abortive as they claimed ignorance.

Different opinions have been expressed on this disturbing situation. An ex-banker, Paul Ejodamen told Nigerian Tribune that, there is human factor in the whole arrangement, urging banks to put measures in place to stem the trend.

A head of corporate affairs in one of the banks who pleaded anonymity, did not rule out the handiwork of people he described as 'bad elements' in the system.

According to him, there is need for the banks to take extra vigilance on those uploading money into the ATMs and double-check bundle of currency notes being put in the vaults by the Tellers.

A financial analyst and Chief Operating Officer, Twinsronk Consulting, Okechukwu Amadi, said ATM has revolutionised banking in Nigeria, calling on the industry regulator, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take bold step to stop the disturbing trend.

He warned that the act should not be allowed to spread as it was capable of rubbishing the nation's banking system.

"I have it before but I thought it was all a rumour. One can understand the use of fake currency in public place certainly not in the bank. CBn and banks must put measures in place to stem it or else, people will lose faith in the ATM technology," he said.

Britain
New defeat means British taxpayers must pay an extra £770m in 'unjustified' EU contributions
The setback for the Prime Minister will add to Conservative turmoil over the question of EU membership as well as putting pressure on Labour and the Liberal Democrats to back a referendum on Europe.

Cash-strapped European governments must now find an additional £6.2 billion for the Brussels budget, a 5.5 per cent increase, at a time of deep cuts to national public spending and EU-imposed austerity in the eurozone.

The raid to pay unpaid bills and to meet a budget shortfall will take Britain's contributions to £14.7 billion this year, meaning that the cost to average British household of belonging to the EU will be £581.

"When countries and citizens across Europe are having to make difficult decisions with their budgets, Europe itself should practice what it preaches with its own budget," said a Treasury spokesman.

"This amendment was unjustified, which is why Britain opposed it."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Captures US Embassy Worker In Act Of CIA Recruitment
Following the just concluded recent visit by John Kerry to Russia, one may have been left with the impression that the tensions of the Cold War are dead and buried. Just the opposite it appears. In what may be a well-timed and orchestrated announcement, moments ago Russia announced that it had caught an American, Ryan Fogle, a third-secretary at the US Embassy in Moscow, "red-handed" as he tried to recruit a Russian intelligence officer to work for the CIA. There goes any leverage the US may have had in attempting to persuade Russia to relent on the joint-Western push to "liberate" Syria.

Just as Russia, run by a former KGB spy, had intended all along, and just another slap in the face of the US department of state, which lately can't seem to find its way out of a scandal-ridden (and redacted) paper bag to save its life. But perhaps most amusing is that in the attached letter given to the recruitment prospect, the CIA give out the email address to be used to indicate interest in working for Langley as follows: unbacggdA@gmail.com. How the times have changed.

US shale oil supply shock rocks global power balance
A steeper than expected rise in US shale oil reserves is about to change the global balance of power between new and existing producers.

Over the next five years, the US will account for a third of new oil supplies, according to The International Energy Agency (IEA). The US will change from the world's leading importer of oil to a net exporter.

Demand for oil from Middle-East oil producers is set to slow as a result.

"North America has set off a supply shock that is sending ripples throughout the world," said IEA executive director Maria van der Hoeven.

The surge in US production will reshape the whole industry, according to the IEA, which made the prediction in its closely-watched bi-annual report examining trends in oil supply and demand over the next five years.

The IEA said it expects the US to overtake Russia as the world's biggest gas producer by 2015 and to become "all but self-sufficient" in its energy needs by about 2035.

Europe
France Mulls Culture Tax on Smartphones, Tablets
[An Nahar] The French government is considering creating a new tax on smartphones and tablets in a bid to raise millions to support the creation of digital cultural content inside La Belle France.

The proposal, handed to President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
Monday, outlines a 1 percent tax on the sale of Internet-compatible devices, targeting companies such as Google
...contributed $814,540 to the 2008 Obama campaign...
, Apple and Amazon. The tax would yield about 86 million euros per year. The revenue would help cultural industries create French content such as music, images and videos.

The proposal is part of La Belle France's "cultural exception," a policy that protects French cinema and music industries, and other creative sectors, against foreign -- often American -- competition.

The French government will meet leading figures of the cultural sector in the next few weeks before any decision is made.

Sharif, who has sought to present himself as a pragmatist who can do business with the United States and improve relations with nuclear rival India, won a resounding victory in Saturday's landmark polls.

Sharif will likely need only the estimated 27 independents and his proportion of seats reserved for women and minorities, to secure a majority in the first democratic transition in a country accustomed to long periods of military rule.

PTI onslaught ends PML-N's reign in Pindi
[Dawn] The Pakistain Moslem League-N is celebrating its victory in the May 11 polls believing it would form a government in the centre and Punjab with a simple majority, but its defeat in the garrison city is a cause for concern for the PML-N leaders.

In 1988, NA-38 covered the area of the present NA-55 and NA-56 constituencies and was won by Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on the PML-N led IJI ticket. Again in 1993 and 1997, he retained this seat on the PML-N ticket.

In 2002, he used Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
's name in his election campaign and won the two seats of NA-55 and NA-56, but later joined Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
led Jamali government. After Nawaz return from Jeddah from exile, Sheikh Rashid lost the two seats in the 2008 elections.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
in May 11 polls he managed to win from NA-55 once again with the support of Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
led Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf

(PTI). He got 88,852 votes, defeating the PML-N candidate Malik Shakil Awan, who bagged 72,275.

Projected electoral triumph eludes PML-F
[Dawn] All projections about the emergence of the Pakistain Musselmen League-Functional as a serious contender to Pakistain Peoples Party and its ability to erode the party's traditional vote bank turned upside down by the unofficial poll results so far made available to the media.

The PML-F, which was spearheading a 10-party alliance it had cobbled together against the PPP, has barely managed to hold onto its traditional constituencies.

The party has reportedly got seven provincial assembly seats in the province. It had fielded 98 candidates, in all, for National Assembly and provincial assembly seats.

The party itself was quite optimistic about making major gains in the PPP's strongholds like Badin, Matiari, Umerkot, etc but the results, albeit unofficial, tell a different story.

Not to mention the party's failure to throw up a major surprise it has suffered a setback in Shikarpur where it expected a clean sweep. "In Shikarpur, we will have a clean sweep," PML-F Sindh general secretary Imtiaz Sheikh had told Dawn a few days before the polls.

More than 100pc voter turn out in at least 49 locales
The largest discrepancy was found at a polling station in NA-193 constituency which witnessed a voter turnout of over 320 per cent
[Dawn] Statistics showing abnormally high turnout confirm reports of rigging at several polling stations across Pakistan.

In at least 49 polling stations around all four provinces of the country, the number of votes polled far exceeds the registered voters, according to data from elections observer group FAFEN.
Sorta like some precincts in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee and Seattle, and like just about all of eastern Pennsylvania and the whole of Maryland...
These include six polling stations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 31 in Punjab, 11 in Sindh and one in Balochistan.

The largest discrepancy was found at a polling station in Rahim Yar Khan's NA-193 constituency which witnessed a voter turnout of over 320 per cent, as 1010 votes were cast against 315 registered voters. A polling station in NA-6, Nowshera-II saw 2774 votes cast against 1023 maximum possible votes.

Catholic Numbers on Rise in Africa and Asia
[An Nahar] The number of Catholic priests and believers in the world is on the rise, a Vatican report showed on Monday, with gains in Africa and Asia offsetting a slump in Europe and the Americas.

The world's Catholics rose from 1.196 billion to 1.214 billion between 2010 and 2011, an increase of 1.5 percent, according to the Church's annual statistics report.

The gain outstripped the increase in the global population, which rose by 1.23 percent over the same period, the report said.

The biggest rise among believers was seen in Africa (up 4.3 percent) and Asia (up 2.0 percent), while America while numbers in Europe were broadly flat, up 0.3 percent.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog backed into the corner and showed its teeth. And what big teeth they were!...
the total number of Catholic priests globally grew from 405,067 in 2001 to 413,418 at the end of 2011.

Again this rise was driven by Africa -- where the number jumped 39.5 percent -- and Asia, up 32 percent.

Over the same period, Europe saw a 9.0 percent drop in priest numbers.

The number of baptized Catholics in the world was stable, at around 17.5 percent of the total population.

The majority of Catholics live in the Americas (48.8 percent), followed by Europe (23.5 percent), Africa (16 percent), Asia (10.9 percent) and Oceania (0.8 percent).

Samsung Announces 5G Data Breakthrough
[An Nahar] Samsung Electronics said Monday it had successfully tested super-fast fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology that would eventually allow users to download an entire movie in one second.

The South Korean giant said the test had witnessed data transmission of more than one gigabyte per second over a distance of two kilometers.

The new technology, which will not be ready for the commercial market before 2020 at the earliest, would offer transmitting speeds "up to several hundred times faster" than existing 4G networks, it said in a statement.

That will permit users to "transmit massive data files including high quality digital movies practically without limitation", it said.

"As a result, subscribers will be able to enjoy a wide range of services such as 3D movies and games, real-time streaming of ultra high-definition (UHD) content, and remote medical services," it added.

Samsung said it had found a way to harness millimeter-wave bands which have proved to be a sticking point for the mobile industry to date.

The test used 64 antenna elements, which the tech titan said overcame the issue of "unfavorable propagation characteristics" that have prevented data traveling across long distances using the bands.

One of the most wired countries on earth, South Korea already has around 20 million 4G users.
