Detroit EMS personnel savagely attacked; perp on loose
[CBS-Detroit] DETROIT (WWJ) -- Officials say two paramedics are in serious condition after they were attacked and stabbed repeatedly while trying to help a woman on Detroit's west side, and the suspect remains on the loose.

The incident happened just after 12 a.m. Tuesday. Both paramedics were stabbed and slashed repeatedly before making it back to their vehicle. The two then drove to Detroit Receiving Hospital where both remain in serious condition. Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said "Both of the EMTs are going to require some extensive surgeries. The injuries -- they came to within inches of dying."

The suspect took off running after the attack and is currently being sought by police. His description was not immediately released.
Insert snarky comment on the unpublished description here
Jones said he plans to meet with Police Chief James Craig later Tuesday to discuss "de-escalation training" and defensive tactic training.
My suggestions for training include body armor and concealed weapons for all Detroit EMTs. I once spent a night riding with city EMTs elsewhere decades ago & noticed one of them wore armor & had a pistol in an ankle holster. Certainly was against protocol at the time, but I felt safer for that.

Cocaine packages found in body of man who died on Aer Lingus flight
[The Guardian] Irish police have confirmed that a number of packages were found inside the body of a Brazilian man who died on board an Aer Lingus flight to Ireland from Portugal this week.
Then it wasn't the lamb and mint chimichurri after all ?
It is believed the packages contained cocaine, which the Garda Síochána suspect burst inside the man during the flight.

The man has been named as 24-year-old John Santos Gurgao, who died following a violent seizure on board flight EI485 on Sunday evening.

After an altercation on the Dublin-bound flight in which a fellow passenger was bitten the pilot diverted the plane to land at Cork airport about 5.40pm. Despite attempts to revive Gurgao, the Brazilian national was pronounced dead after the plane landed.
Saw this a few times in my residency. Richmond, VA, was on the "I-95 flyway" for drugs coming up the East coast. "Packers" would swallow balloons or latex wrapped packages of cocaine -- when they got to their destination in Philly, New York, etc they'd poop out the packages. Unfortunately every once in a while the 'packages' would leak, and they would end up in our ER with uncontrollable seizures. As part of the (very quick) evaluation you'd get an abdominal X-ray, and there would be the packages in the colon. Those folks almost always died. I can't imagine being paid enough to do something like that.

Clock Boy will move to Qatar with family for studies - Good riddance !
[The Guardian] The Texas boy arrested for bringing to school a homemade clock that was mistaken for a bomb is moving to Qatar, his family said on Tuesday, a few hours after he was at the White House for an astronomy night hosted by Barack Obama.

Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a ninth-grader who was arrested for reasons his supporters said were influenced by bias against his Muslim religion, has accepted an offer from the Qatar Foundation to study at its young innovators program.

His family said in a statement: "This means, that we, as a family, will relocate to Qatar where Ahmed will receive a full scholarship for secondary and undergraduate education."

The teenager, who dabbles in robotics and had attended a Dallas-area high school, was thrust into the spotlight in September and his family has been travelling the globe to meet dignitaries ever since.

White House Welcomes Clock Boy

[AnNahar] The Muslim teenager who was detained when his teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb visited the White House Monday, after a receiving a very public invite from President Barack Obama
Jedi mind meld...
Ahmed Mohammed joined a group of students, teachers, scientists, astronauts and celebrities -- including the "Myth Busters" and Bill Nye -- for White House Astronomy Night.

During remarks at Monday's event, Obama did not mention Mohammed by name, but spoke about the need for teachers, parents and others to inspire young people.

"We have to watch for and cultivate, encourage, those glimmers of curiosity and possibility, not suppress them, not squelch them," he said.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Why Is a Russian Military Satellite Creeping on Foreign Comm Satellites?
[Motherboard.Vice] The Russian military satellite Kosmos 2501, also known as Luch or Olymp, has been acting very strangely of late. Launched on September 28, 2014, Luch spent its first months in geostationary orbit flitting between Russian spacecraft, which was mildly puzzling to satellite trackers, but not an immediate cause for alarm.

But in early April, Luch went on the move again, and this time it nestled provocatively between the orbital paths of two satellites operated by Intelsat, a communications provider based jointly in Luxembourg and Washington DC. Then, on September 25, it relocated once more, positioning itself just 0.1 degrees west of another one of the company's satellites, Intelsat 905.

There are a few sketchy things going on here. First and foremost, unannounced flight changes can be dangerous, as they disrupt the working model of restricting satellites to specific orbital pathways. Switching to an orbit only a few kilometers away from another satellite, without notifying that satellite's operators of your intent, is bound to be met with suspicion.

"This is not normal behavior and we're concerned," Kay Sears, president of Intelsat General, said of Luch's recent maneuvers in an Oct. 8 interview with SpaceNews. "We absolutely need responsible operators. Space is a domain that has to be protected."

"If we all did that, we would have a lot of accidents," she added.
Plan for capabilities, not intentions. Perhaps we need to launch our own shadow for Kosmos 2501 that maneuvers and stays close to it. All unannounced of course.

Two members of kidney-stealing gang arrested
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: In a dramatic raid on Tuesday, Lohi Bher police freed four poor men from the clutches of a gang of kidney stealers and tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
two persons who were guarding them in an isolated house in the city's Sihala suburbs.

A citizen's complaint alerted Lohi Bher police about the criminal activity.

"Acting on the complaint, DSP Ashraf Shah conducted the raid and brought all six persons to the cop shoppe for legal action and safe keeping," the police said.

Complainant Irfan Masih told Lohi Bher police that alleged gang members brought his jobless brother-in-law Mukhtar Masih from Lahore to Islamabad with offer of work but instead stole his kidney.

As Mukhtar lay in his death bed, the gang lured his brother Jamil Masih and the family feared for his life too, police quoted Irfan as saying.

A four-tier gang was said to be involved in the ugly trade of illegal kidney transplantations, with an 'agent' sitting at the top receiving orders from unethical 'medical workers' for kidney donors and executing them through 'organisers' and 'handlers' or 'controllers'.

Police have started the paperwork but haven't done much else under the Transplantation of Human Organ and Tissue Act 2010 against the six persons nominated by the complaint on charges covered by section 10, and section 11 of the Act, along with PPCs 334 and 109.

Mukhtar was promised Rs150,000 for his kidney but was paid only Rs10,000, according to the complainant Irfan.

"Now they (the gang members) will take Jamil too to the transplant centre and take out his kidney any time," he told the police, nominating the suspects running the illegal trade in human organs.

Irfan said the gang members trapped poor, jobless people with offers of job or capital for starting a business, kept them in jug and forced them into parting with their kidney.

Once broken down, victims of the gang were taken to the illegal transplant centre. After tissue matching with the potential receiver, the medical staff removed their kidney, he said.

Police said preliminary interrogation of the two persons arrested in Tuesday's raid suggested that the four persons they were guarding were brought from different parts of the country. They were rather lucky as their tissues did not match with any of the patient needing a kidney transplant.

The two identified themselves as "controller" and "handler" responsible for taking care of and transporting the people put under their watch.

"Victims of the trade were shifted to their native town after being paid between Rs10,000 and Rs20,000, while those running the trade earned anywhere between Rs2 million and Rs7 million," the arrested persons told police interrogators.

They also revealed that their gang had been active for about seven years and its activities benefited both Pak and foreign kidney patients.

MNA 'assaults' woman constable
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: A woman constable was assaulted by a member of the National Assembly at the Parliament Lodges on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place at the gate of the Parliament Lodges, where the woman constable -- identified as Afshan -- was deputed.

DSP for Parliament Lodges Ghulam Rasool told Dawn that there had been a heated exchange between National Peoples Party MNA Shahjehan Mangrio and the woman constable, which led to 'an incident'.

Mrs Mangrio, who hails from Sukkur and was elected to parliament on a reserved seat, resides in suite E-403 at the lodges.

According to the DSP, the altercation began after the constable refused to go see the MNA in her room. He said that senior police officials had been notified of the incident.

SSP Security Mir Waiz Niaz told Dawn that police were "holding an inquiry to fix responsibility" in the matter.

Sources said the MNA had asked the constable to facilitate a guest who was to call on her. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the guest was not given any protocol and reportedly had to wait at the gate, which incensed the politician, who summoned the woman constable to her rooms.

A senior officer, on condition of anonymity, said that a report of the incident had been sought from the DSP Parliament Lodges for further action.

"We have decided to bring the MNA's highhandedness to the attention of the National Assembly speaker and will also look to initiate legal action against her," he added.

Student creates app for vets to prevent night terrors
Tyler Skluzacek was in sixth grade when his father, Sgt. 1st Class Patrick Skluzacek, was deployed to Iraq for a year. When he came back, he struggled with night terrors, which according to the Mayo Clinic, "are episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep."

By tracking heart rate and movement for a few weeks, the app "can find the exact symptoms of the onset of the panic attack," Tyler explains. Then, when those symptoms are detected, the app uses the smartwatch or smartphone to which it is connected to disrupt the pattern via sound or vibration, taking the soldier out of a deep sleep but keeping him or her asleep, Tyler says.

The myBivy (short for "bivouac") app earned Tyler and his team top prize in the Best Mobile Application for Clinicians category. The team was awarded $1,500.
Good job.

USN takes action against vindictive admiral. Whistle blowers be damned, he gets promoted.
[WAPO] The Navy is poised to promote the admiral in charge of its elite SEAL teams and other commando units even though Pentagon investigators determined that he illegally retaliated against staff members whom he mistakenly suspected were whistle blowers.

Rear Adm. Brian L. Losey was investigated five times by the Defense Department's inspector general after subordinates complained that he had wrongly fired, demoted or punished them during a vengeful but fruitless hunt for the person who had anonymously reported him for a minor travel-policy infraction, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

After conducting separate, years-long investigations that involved more than 100 witnesses and 300,000 pages of e-mails, the inspector general upheld complaints from three of the five staff members. In each of those cases, it recommended that the Navy take action against Losey for violating whistleblower-protection laws, the documents show.

The Navy, however, dismissed the findings this month and decided not to discipline Losey, a preeminent figure in the military's secretive Special Operations forces who once commanded SEAL Team 6, the clandestine unit known for killing terrorist targets such as Osama bin Laden. He now leads the Naval Special Warfare Command and has served in Afghanistan, Iraq, Panama, Bosnia, Somalia and other conflict zones.

Senate Dems block anti-sanctuary city bill
[Fox] Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a Republican-backed bill that would crack down on so-called sanctuary cities by threatening to withhold funds to local governments that don't cooperate with federal immigration officials.

The bill failed on a 54-45 vote. It needed 60 to advance.

The Stop Sanctuary Cities Act became a lightning rod issue ahead of the vote, as GOP sponsors tried to peel off just a few Democrats to support it while Democratic leaders blasted the legislation as counterproductive. The White House issued a formal veto threat Tuesday morning, while the chamber's top Democrat tried to discredit the measure by calling it "The Donald Trump Act."

But GOP backers cast the legislation as a critical first step toward reining in the exploding, and risky, practice of cities and counties ignoring federal immigration law.

"Sanctuary cities and the associated violent crimes by illegal immigrants are reaching a critical point, and we cannot wait any longer to take action to protect Americans here at home," sponsor Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said in a statement.

The bill was considered months after a young woman's murder in San Francisco allegedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant touched off a national debate over immigration law.
