2 men charged in Georgia officer's fatal shooting
[NY Post] Officer Antwan Toney was black. The two perps are as well. BLM doesn't count when the cops are black
SNELLVILLE, Ga. ‐ Two teen-aged suspects have been charged, including one man who remains on the loose, in connection with the fatal shooting of a George police officer who was killed while responding to a suspicious vehicle parked near a middle school, authorities said Sunday.

Gwinnett County Police said in a statement that Isaiah Pretlow, 19, was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with aggravated assault. A second suspect, Tafahree Maynard, 18, has been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder but remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Both men are suspected in the afternoon shooting near Snellville of Officer Antwan Toney, the Gwinnett County Police Department said in a news release.

Toney died at a hospital from his injuries, police said. The 30-year-old from Southern California had been with the Gwinnett County Police Department for nearly three years. It was his first police job.

"The people that worked with Officer Toney on a daily basis recalled a very jovial person who was dedicated to his job and dedicated to his community," Gwinnett County Police Chief Butch Ayers said.

This is why Western Civilization* totally rocks. Not only did it invent pretty much everything in our modern world, but it's a big tent - anyone can join no matter what your race, color, creed or planet of origin. And we don't give a flip about that 'cultural appropriation' nonsense either. Want to fly a plane, ride a bike or build a Mars rocket? Have at it! The more the merrier, so line up and sign up today.

* You can call it The White Man, you can call it The Patriarchy. I prefer Western Civ - it's more accurate and less whiny.

DOJ's New Strategy on Transnational Crime
[OpsLens] Organized crime. Second only to "terrorism," its likely the most feared domestic security threat in the United States. It’s certainly the oldest and long-lasting danger to law and order America has had to deal with. Of course, the criminal organizations that represent the prime danger to America today are not comprised of local thugs and drug dealers. It’s the transnational crime syndicates that are the real problem‐and who are often orchestrating those low- level thugs and dealers.

Local and federal governments have for decades sought innovative ideas on how to deal with this problem. Some solutions have been less successful than others.

Failed polygamist and minister, accused of illegally circumcising 2 teens
[Springfield News-Leader] A Nixa man who started an organization called "Restore Bible Culture" was indicted for illegally circumcising two teenagers in May, court documents say.

A grand jury indicted Curtis W. Abbott in August on two counts of child endangerment and one count of unauthorized practice of medicine or surgery ‐ all of which are felonies.

Abbott, 47, is not a doctor.

He sent a statement to the News-Leader calling the allegations false.

Because the case was handled by a grand jury, many details of the case ‐ like an alleged motive ‐ are not public.

However, court documents from a recent divorce shed light on Abbott and his strong religious convictions.

Abbott represented himself in the divorce, which his now ex-wife initiated in 2017.

Court documents filed by Abbott say his wife decided to end their marriage after his "decision to officially go back into the ministry after having multiple prophetic communications."

Abbott claimed his ministry had "several false starts in years past."

When his ex-wife accused him of being mentally abusive, controlling, a polygamist and dismissive of women, Abbott denied most of those charges ‐ and also clarified his views on polygamy.

He responded, writing that he believed "polygamy is not in anyway (sic) condemned or looked down upon in the Bible and that many social ills pertaining to the stability of family would be balanced out if it were still in favor today."

Activists Demand HHS End Involvement in Late-Term Abortion - 'Humanized Mice' project
[Free Beacon] Pro-life activist David Daleiden said the Department of Health and Human Services was promoting late-term abortion by agreeing to a multimillion-dollar contract for mice injected with cells obtained from aborted babies.

On Wednesday evening CNS News revealed the agency had agreed to a $13 million contract with the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) to obtain 90 so-called humanized mice each month. Daleiden, founder of the Center for Medical Progress and undercover videographer, said fulfilling the contract would require at least two late-term babies to be aborted each month. The taxpayer-funded enterprise made the agency "complicit" in abortion.

"UCSF is the biggest abortion and late-term abortion training school in the country," Daleiden told an audience at the House of Representatives Rayburn building. "It's absolutely unconscionable that our taxpayer dollars are being used to traffic in aborted baby body parts."

Daleiden called on the agency to terminate the contract, as it did a $15,900 contract with Advanced Bioscience Resources in September following public outcry. He said it was incumbent on the "pro-life Trump administration" to live up to its values.

RIP Ted Bol, Inventor of 'Little Free Libraries'
[Weekly Standard] In 2009, Tod Bol put a small wooden box in front of his Hudson, Wisconsin, home and unwittingly started a movement. Bol, who died Thursday at age 62, filled the box‐shaped like a one-room schoolhouse in honor of his late teacher mother, who had loved reading‐with books. He encouraged his neighbors to borrow a book or leave a book. And so the Little Free Library movement was born.

Over the ensuing decade, word of Little Free Libraries spread on the Internet. They quickly spread across the globe; they’re reportedly to be found in more than 80 countries now. 75,000 are registered on the Little Free Library website. Bol operated a Little Free Library non-profit, which tracks them and provides support. "It’s weird to be an international phenomenon," he told the Associated Press in 2012.

You encounter Little Free Libraries in the predictable precincts, of course: The heavily educated quarters of upper northwest Washington, D.C., are chock full of them. But they’re not at all exclusively the province of the Bobos: I’ve run across them in suburban San Antonio and working class parts of Rhode Island, too.
The Little Free Library website can be explored here.

Teen drives seven hours round trip to deliver pizza to a dying man
[CBS News] A teen in Michigan made a pizza delivery he'll never forget, and his gesture is warming hearts across the nation. Eighteen-year-old Dalton Shaffer was working his shift at Steve's Pizza in Battle Creek, Michigan, Tuesday night when he got a call about an old customer.

The man on the phone said his son-in-law, Rick Morgan, who had moved to Indianapolis, was a big fan of Steve's Pizza and was battling cancer. They had planned a trip back to Michigan and a visit to Steve's, but Morgan's health took a turn for the worse and he was now in hospice care. The man wondered if the shop might be willing to send Morgan a text or a card.

"He was kind of telling me just a little bit about how they used to live in Battle Creek and they were just really big fans of Steve's Pizza," Shaffer told CBS affiliate WWMT.

After hearing that a fan of Steve's Pizza was unable to fulfill his dream of eating a slice again, Shaffer wanted to do more than send a card. He asked the father-in-law what kind of pizza Morgan wanted. Then, after he closed up shop for the night, Shaffer jumped in his car with two pizzas.

He drove three and a half hours from Michigan to the home in Indiana.

DRC journalists set free after police detention
[Al Jazeera] Five journalists placed in durance vile

by the police in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC) have been released after 12 hours of interrogation.

The journalists were picked up on Friday after publishing articles about alleged misappropriation of rations for police cadets, their newspaper said.

They have been allowed to leave and told to return on Monday with AfricaNews managing editor Achille Kadima, the police said in a statement on Saturday.

"It is unbelievable and very disturbing that the police have arrested journalists who revealed that a police investigation was being conducted into alleged misappropriation," said Arnaud Froger, head of Reporters Without Borders' (RSF) Africa desk.

Tanzania: Abducted tycoon Mohammed Dewji returns home
[Al Jazeera] Tanzanian tycoon Mohammed Dewji, who was kidnapped a week ago in Tanzania's economic capital Dar es Salam, has returned home unharmed.

Dubbed as Africa's youngest billionaire, the 43-year-old heads the MeTL Group which operates in about 10 countries with interests from agriculture to insurance, transport, logistics and the food industry.

"I thank Allah that I have returned home safe and sound," Dewji told a presser on Saturday in Dar es Salaam where he was kidnapped on October 11 as he entered a gym at a hotel.

He also thanked the "Tanzanian authorities, including the police, who worked for my return".

"I thank all my fellow Tanzanians and everyone around the world for their prayers," he added.

Dewji earlier tweeted that he had been released and his father, Gullam Dewji, confirmed his son's release in comments to the Tanzanian daily Mwanachi.

Simon Sirro, national police chief, said the businessman had provided some information about the kidnapping,

"Mohammed Dewji told us that the kidnappers wanted money but were very afraid, even though they were armed. He asked them several times how much they wanted but they gave no figure," Sirro said.

"We now know their network, we know which country the plans were made," he added, without giving details.

Foreign captors?
Dewji had indicated that his abductors spoke a Southern Africa language, confirming suspicions that the kidnappers were foreigners, said Lazaro Mambosasa, Dar es Salam police chief.

The family had offered a reward of one billion Tanzanian shillings ($440,000) for information that would help police find him.

Dewji is Tanzania's richest man and is reportedly worth $1.5bn. He served as a member of parliament from 2005 to 2015.

In 2013, he became the first Tanzanian to be featured on the cover of Forbes magazine. Two years later he was named Forbes Africa Person of the Year.

Arabia
Saudis Used Mole At Twitter To Track Dissidents For Troll Farm: Report
[Huffpoo] Mole was part of a "troll farm’ operation to attack critics under orders of Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, reports the New York Times.

The Saudi government apparently groomed a mole inside Twitter to keep tabs on dissidents as part of a wide-ranging operation that also unleashed vicious social media attacks on them, The New York Times reported Saturday.

The mole was part of a sophisticated online effort "dictated" by controversial Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman and carried out by his advisers to quash domestic and international criticism of Saudi Arabia, according to the Times.

One of the dissidents viciously attacked as part of the ongoing operation was the late Washington Post journalist and U.S. resident Jamal Khashoggi. Each morning he awoke to a vile onslaught of Twitter attacks, said the Times.

"The mornings were the worst for him because he would wake up to the equivalent of sustained gunfire online," Khashoggi’s longtime friend Maggie Mitchell Salem told the Times.

The Saudi government finally admitted Friday that Khashoggi was killed inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 ‐ during a physical altercation, according to state-owned media. Turkish officials, who reportedly have an audio tape of Khashoggi’s death, say he was murdered in the consulate by a Saudi hit squad and dismembered under orders of the government. The Saudi version of events has been largely met with derision.

Trump says US will pull out of nuclear arms deal with Russia
[JOURNALDUCAMEROUN] President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
confirmed Saturday that the United States plans to leave a Cold War-era nuclear weapons treaty with Russia, which criticized the move as Washington’s latest effort to be the sole global superpower.

Trump claims Russia has long violated the three-decade-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, known as the INF, was signed in 1987 by president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

But a foreign ministry source told the RIA Novosti state news agency that Washington’s "main motive is a dream of a unipolar world," one that won’t be realized.

"We’re the ones who have stayed in the agreement and we’ve honored the agreement, but Russia has not unfortunately honored the agreement, so we’re going to terminate the agreement and we’re going to pull out," Trump told news hounds in Elko, Nevada.

Darth Bolton to Meet with Vladimir Putin in Moscow Next Week
[Breitbart] President Donald Trump’s National Security adviser John Bolton will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin when he visits Moscow next week, Kremlin officials announced on Friday.

In an interview with Russia’s Channel One broadcaster, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Bolton would meet Putin as well as other leading officials.

"We are indeed waiting for Bolton to visit Moscow, the meetings are being prepared now. Security Council Secretary [Nikolai] Patrushev is his direct partner," he said. "The Russian Security Council is also preparing for this dialogue. Other meetings are also planned."

"It is not the first time that Bolton will meet Putin’s aide on external politics [Yury] Ushakov," he continued. "I cannot rule out contacts in the Foreign Ministry, but we are also preparing a possible meeting with President Putin and we hope that this meeting will take place."

Many expect the meeting to involve discussions over another bilateral meeting between Putin and President Donald Trump, although Peskov said that such plans are still just an idea. He also warned that Russia’s efforts to engage in dialogue with the United States have previously run into a "blank wall."

China-Japan-Koreas
China's top Macau liaison official dead after fall from building
BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s top representative to Macau died late on Saturday after falling from the building where he lived, the Chinese government said on Sunday.

Zheng Xiaosong, the head of China’s liaison office to Macau, had been suffering from depression, the Hong Kong and Macau Office of the Chinese government’s State Council said in a statement. The statement did not elaborate further on the circumstances of his death.

Zheng, 59, was appointed to the Macau post in September 2017 and is a member of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee, the largest of China’s elite ruling bodies.

Like neighboring Hong Kong, Macau operates under China’s "one country, two systems" policy and is ruled by a chief executive, who is chosen via an election but must get approval from Beijing to formally take office.

The liaison office in Macau serves as a bridge between the local government and Beijing and has become increasingly influential in local affairs.

Tens of Thousands Rally for Taiwan Independence Vote
[An Nahar] Tens of thousands of Taiwan independence campaigners erupted into the streets Saturday for a major rally that is a rebuke to Beijing and a challenge to the island's already embattled government.

The protest in central Taipei came as China increasingly pushes its claim to the self-ruling democratic island and President Tsai Ing-wen struggles to appease Beijing and independence factions.

It was the first large-scale protest calling for an outright independence vote since Taiwan first became a democracy more than 20 years ago.

Organisers claimed a turnout of more than 100,000.

Demonstrators gathered outside the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) headquarters chanting slogans and waving flags reading "Independence Referendum".

"Want Referendum!" and "Oppose Annexation!" the crowd shouted.

China still sees Taiwan as part of its territory to be reunified, despite the two sides being ruled separately since the end of a civil war on the mainland in 1949.

Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, with its own currency, political and judicial systems, but has never declared formal independence from the mainland.

Beijing has warned it would respond with force if Taiwan tried an official split.

Organised by new group Formosa Alliance, which is backed by two pro-independence former Taiwan presidents, Lee Teng-hui and Chen Shui-bian, the rally called for a public vote on whether the island should formally declare independence from China.

"We want to tell China to stop bullying Taiwan," Alliance leader Kuo Pei-horng, 63, told the crowd.

"Taiwanese people want to be their own master," he added.

Families brought their young children to the event, but the majority of protesters were older residents, with some pro-independence church groups also joining the rally.

"Only through holding a referendum can Taiwanese people show to the international community our right to build an independent new country," said Tsai Wen-li, 63, a retired postal worker who wore a T-shirt reading "Taiwan is my country".

Engineer Rex Yang, 35, described Taiwan as an "orphan in the international community".

"Taiwanese people want Taiwan to become a normal country...that is why I stand out here today", he told AFP.

#7  If you need this sort of care in your later years, plan to move to a third world country, or buy a robot. There is no way for a normal person to make enough money to pay these bills given the current inflation rate on medical care.

In a related story, my mother-in-law actually had insurance for long term care, and yet chose to die rather than use it, because she wanted her independence.

It is sad that she wasted her money on insurance she did not want to use. But that was her choice so, ok.

The moral of the story, is to spend some time thinking about this problem. Absolutely no one will care about your choices when you are dead.

Instead your relatives will be paying lawyers and funeral homes to get your things sorted out.

Florida and Texas Post Record Sept.-to-Sept. Job Gains
(CNSNews.com) - Florida and Texas, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, not only led the nation in the number of nonfarm jobs they added in the year running from September 2017 to September 2018 but also added the greatest number of jobs to their states in any September-to-September period on record.

Ohio and Pennsylvania‐sometimes considered part of the nation’s "Rust Belt"‐also saw significant job gains from September 2017 to September 2018, with Ohio showing the largest increase for its state in 21 years and Pennsylvania showing the largest increase in 18 years.

"Thirty-seven states had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment in September," BLS said in its state employment report. "The largest job gains occurred in Florida (+407,300), Texas (+406,400), and California (+339,600). The largest percentage gain occurred in Florida (+4.8 percent), followed by Utah (+3.6 percent) and Texas (+3.3 percent).

The unemployment rate in Florida was 3.5 percent. In Texas, it was 3.8 percent. In California, it was 4.1 percent.

While California ranked third among all states for the number of job gained during the period from September 2017 to September 2018, its statewide jobs growth numbers during that period were actually smaller than they were in two of the previous three September-to-September periods. (From September 2014 to September 2015, California added 493,000 jobs; from 2015 to 2016, it added 393,800 jobs; and from 2016 to 2017, it added 307,500 jobs)

Trump's gonna need a bigger venue for Ted Cruz rally because crowd size just EXPLODED!!
[Right Scoop] We told you the other day that Trump had to pick a bigger Houston venue for his Ted Cruz rally because they was getting a lot more signups than anticipated for their 8,000 seat venue. So they bumped it up to the Toyota Center which holds 19,000. And as we also pointed out, that’s well above average of what Trump normally seats for these campaign rallies.

Well it turns out the signups for the Trump/Cruz rally has exploded since we reported that and now there’s no way he can seat everyone in the Toyota Center:
FOX NEWS ‐ At least 77,000 people have signed up for President Trump’s Houston rally on Monday to support incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who is locked in the Texas Senate battle with Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston police will be "fully mobilized" for the rally. Attendees must have tickets to enter and will be admitted in the order that they line up, the report said.

"Keep in mind that once the capacity is met, you won’t get in whether you have a ticket or not," an officer said.

More than 77,800 people had signed up for the rally by Friday morning, according to The Chronicle. A person familiar with the event told the paper that the Trump campaign was not considering a move to a larger venue.

It’s been over 24 hours since they last checked, so who knows what the number would be now.

But it makes sense why they aren’t trying to move the venue again, as it’s just too close to the day of the rally which is Monday.

But wow, 77k sounds just fantastic. If this is representative of what’s going to happen on election day in Texas, Beta might lose by a landslide.

#1  Leftist college professors who fail papers because "I just can't agree with what you said" recruit for the Republicans. I never thought that I would say this but thank you for being so transparent.

#3  Here in Mesa there were 50K outside 4 hours before the venue and gridlock with people trying to get in. The had set jumbo trons outside so the people that could not get in could watch, and that was filled to over flowing.

#4  I’ve read that on the left they're encouraging their people to sign up for these things so they can either cause trouble once they get in or not go, leaving plenty of empty seats that would otherwose have been filled with Republican supporters.

#5  With 70K signing up for a 19K facility, I dont think no-shows will be a problem, even if half the applications were fake. The press is hiding the fact that people in Texas have had enough of them cramming the creepy way-left dude down our throats.

IHC suspends Axact man’s sentence
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court suspended the 20-year jail term for an employee of the Axact group in the fake degrees case on Friday and ordered his release. The court told Rizwan Shah, a senior manager of M/S Axact, to furnish surety bonds of Rs 500,000.

In July, the Sessions Court of Islamabad had convicted Axact owner Shoaib Sheikh, Rizwan Shah and 21 others in the fake degree scam case and awarded 20 years imprisonment under different charges.

Mr Shah challenged the conviction before Justice Athar Minallah. His counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi and advocate Sohail Warriach argued before the court that the conviction was not sustainable since there was insufficient evidence to link the convicted persons with the crime.

Shoaib Sheikh, the owner, has also challenged his conviction before the court.

Civil Secretariat guard denies woman entry without dupatta
[DAWN] The government representatives on Friday took the flak after a guard at the Minister’s Block of the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Civil Secretariat stopped a woman from entering the premises without a dupatta on her head.

The issue surfaced when a woman uploaded a video on social media showing that a guard had prevented her from entering without a dupatta. It shows the guard telling the visitor that the orders had been orally given by Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid and Chaudhry Zaheeruddin from the Public Prosecution Department.

Both of them vehemently denied issuing any such order and the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaaf, through its official account, also condemned the allegation.

Dr Yasmin Rashid tweeted: "This is quite absurd indeed! Neither has such an instruction been given nor is it possible to discriminate against anyone on this pretext. Have taken notice of this. The guard has been investigated and a show cause notice is being issued to him."

Her party page also supported her tweet: "The Minister @Dr_YasminRashid has not issued any discriminatory orders like this. One should not hurl any blame/allegation without concrete evidence. You may report the incident to concerned authorities."

Speaking to Dawn, Personal Secretary to Chaudhry Zaheeruddin denied the involvement of the minister, and said whoever had done this was involved in character liquidation.

"Thousands of people including women of all ages and attire enter inside everyday, and no one is told this," he said. "Someone is playing a prank of some kind for tarnishing our image," he said, adding "there are no such rules and no such orders."

Minor domestic worker allegedly tortured by army officer, husband at Rawalpindi residence
[DAWN] A maiden of tender years hired as a domestic worker in Rawalpindi was allegedly tortured by her employers for over a year, it emerged on Saturday.

The case, a grim reminder of the infamous Taiba torture case of 2016, came to light through a series of videos shared on Twitter in which the child can be seen narrating her ordeal.

The child named Kinza, an 11-year-old per her own estimate, says that she is employed as a domestic worker at the residence of Ammara Riaz, a major in the Pakistain Army, and her husband Mohsin Riaz, who is a doctor by profession. The house is located in Wilayat Colony, Scheme III, Chaklala.

The girl, who managed to escape the house, accuses her employers of starving her and torturing her with wires, belts and ropes for over a year. She further says she is kicked and stomped on while she sleeps.

When asked by the videographer to describe how she has been mistreated, she explains that she is not fed properly by the family she lives with, and when she steals food out of hunger, she is administered inhumane beatings.

In the video, Kinza shows injuries that she has sustained, including her bloodshot, black eyes as well as multiple wound marks on her arms, neck and head.

Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari took notice of the case and said the ministry is "keeping a close eye [on the matter] to ensure justice for the little girl".

Family of six-year-old victim of alleged sexual assault awaits justice in Jamshoro
[DAWN] The family of a six-year-old victim of alleged sexual assault are awaiting findings from a chemical examiner's report in a case which took place in Jamshoro on September 30, it was learnt on Saturday.

The case surfaced on social media earlier this week, following the hanging of six-year-old Zainab Amin's rapist and murderer, Imran Ali. In a tweet, a user demanded similar "attention, outrage and coverage" so the child could get justice.

Police had lodged a first information report (FIR) under Sections 511 and 376 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC) against a young boy, who is alleged to have attempted to rape the minor girl. He was sent to jail after having been placed in durance vile
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in the FIR lodged on a complaint of the girl’s father, Imtiaz Hingoro.

"They are my neighbours and I had deep trust in them... yet this family has done this to us," said Hingoro, who is an employee of a public sector university. "I was away from home when I was called by my wife to get back immediately. Upon reaching home I was told that this incident had happened," he said.

Hingoro initially took the child to a female doctor who advised them to report the matter to police in view of the nature of the case. The suspect, whose father is a low-ranking policeman in Hyderabad, is currently in prison on judicial remand.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jamshoro Suahee Aziz Talpur had conducted the initial investigations of the case and met the girl and her family. She has now been transferred to the central police office.

"When I was in Jamshoro we had sent samples taken from the girl and the boy for chemical examination," she told Dawn, adding that a DNA test can also be done from the samples if deemed necessary.

Washington state voters could be the first to approve a carbon tax
[Washington Examiner] Washington state could be the first in the nation to enact a voter-approved carbon tax if a ballot initiative succeeds there in November, an outcome that supporters say would prove the political tenability of a major policy to combat climate change.

"Even being in a competitive position is a significant achievement," Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat and rumored 2020 presidential candidate, told the Washington Examiner in an interview. "If it doesn’t happen this year, we are not done."

However, if voters in this progressive western state reject a carbon tax for the second time, after voting down a similar plan two years ago, it may slow what modest momentum there is for pricing pollution at the national level.

"I do think about the consequences of it failing," said Noah Kaufman, a Columbia University economist who studies energy and climate change policy. "If a blue state fails again to pass a carbon tax, it certainly doesn't look good for efforts in states elsewhere, and at the federal level."

The logic behind a carbon tax is simple, economists say: Raise the price of carbon intensive products ‐ based on the damage they cause society ‐ so consumers use less of them, and encourage producers to find other solutions to limit emissions.

#1  this is a typical lefty initiative

1. lots of favored industries get exemptions (paper mills, cement, aluminum)

2. the revenues are going to be used for subsidizing other favored industries ('renewable energy')

3. the taxes won't directly hit consumers, they will hit businesses who will have to raise prices and get blamed for gouging

#5  Leaving aside the negative economic impact, points 1-4 from the previous commenters, and the fact that Global Warming will eventually be recognized as the biggest scientific hoax since the Piltdown Man, I like the carbon tax. It makes me nostalgic for the good old days when the Church sold indulgences and you could simply buy your way out of sin.
