JR High Teacher Arrested For Allegedly Trying To Traffic Girl To Multiple Men In Morocco
[Daily Caller] A Texas junior high school teacher was arrested Wednesday for allegedly trying to traffic a girl for sex to multiple men in Morocco.

Amber Michelle Parker, 37, was arrested on human trafficking charges after allegedly trying to "traffic a minor child to multiple male subjects online," Freestone County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley said, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported Wednesday. The eighth grade reading teacher reportedly posted pictures of the girl in lingerie and exposing her breasts on various social media sites to look for men interested in the minor.

The girl was also marketed as a virgin, according to KBTX.

"Family members got wind that Parker was going to try to lure this girl to Morocco," McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said, according to the Tribune-Herald. "It is a dastardly story, and it is trafficking at its worst."

Parker traveled to Morocco in mid-December and returned on New Year’s Day, the Tribune-Herald reported. The girl was not taken on the trip.

Mexia Junior High School in Mexia, Texas, placed Parker on administrative leave Wednesday afternoon once the school heard about the allegation and arrest, according to the Tribune-Herald. (RELATED: Teacher And Former Miss Kentucky Arrested After Sending Nudes Over Snapchat To 15-Year-Old Teen)

"The district continues to monitor the situation and feels no students at Mexia Junior High were ever at risk," Mexia Independent School District Superintendent Lyle DuBus said, the Tribune-Herald reported.

Parker is on bond for $25,000, according to KBTX.

Sudan's opposition calls for more protests against Omar al-Bashir
[Al Jazeera] Sudan's largest opposition groups have called for a fresh wave of protests to demand that President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
step down, as the longtime ruler made another attempt to stem popular discontent by promising wage hikes and appealing to patriotism.

In a joint statement on Thursday, four groups called for nationwide protests on Friday and a march on the president's Nile-side palace on Sunday.

They also called for a march on parliament in Khartoum's twin city of Omdurman to present a petition demanding that the 74-year-old general-turned-president step down.

The demands are likely to turn up the pressure on al-Bashir to find a way out of the crisis. Sudan has seen two weeks of violent street protests, with dozens killed.

During Thursday's anti-government protests in Port Sudan, Sudanese security forces fired tear gas at protesters who were trying to deliver an anti-government petition to the local headquarters of President Omar al-Bashir's ruling National Congress party, a witness told Rooters news agency.

More than 200 people took part in the demonstration, which broke up before the protesters reached the building.

The protests were initially sparked by steep price hikes, a fuel shortage and a liquidity crunch that forced authorities to place a ceiling on bank withdrawals and led to long lines at ATMs.

Ghana pastor attacked for prophesying death of top Islamic cleric
[AFRICANEWS] A Ghanaian pastor, Owusu Bempah, in what has become his traditional New Year prophecies listed a number of high profile citizens who he claimed will die in 2019.

Among the list was the West African country’s top Islamic leader, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, referred to and recognised by the state as the Chief Imam of Ghana.

The prophesy which received wide media coverage did not sit down well with a group of young Moslems who on Wednesday took matters into their hands and attacked a branch of Bempah’s church.

The attackers destroyed materials within the church including musical equipments, they smashed glass windows and pulled down billboards in front of the church.

In a statement late Wednesday, the Imam urged for calm and tasked the youth to maintain all ties of unity and fraternity that the two religions had maintained over the decades.

Bolsonaro hopes to attract investments of more than $ 1,800 million
[ELUNIVERSAL] The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, hopes to attract "rapidly" investments amounting to 1,637 million euros or 1,867 million dollars through railway concessions, as well as in a dozen airports and four port terminals in the country.

"We will quickly attract initial investments of some 7,000 million reais with rail concessions, 12 airports and four port terminals," the Brazilian president announced through his official profile on Twitter , Europa Press said.

Russia formally charges US Marine vet Paul Whelan with spying after he was 'caught red-handed in Moscow hotel room with flash drive containing names of secret agents'
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News]
  • US Marine veteran Paul Whelan has been indicted by Russia for alleged spying

  • He now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the espionage charges

  • Whelan was arrested on December 28 at the Metropol Hotel in Moscow

  • Russian media says he was detained because he received a database of employees of a 'secret' Russian agency

  • Experts on the Kremlin have speculated that Whelan's arrest was bogus, and an attempt to create leverage against America in the case of Russian Maria Butina

Mysterious tale of Paul Whelan, American man accused of spying in Russia, steeped in contradictions

[USAToday] He traveled the world for business and for pleasure; that much is known about Paul N. Whelan, the Novi man the Russian government alleges was spying in Moscow when it arrested him Friday.

The Russian Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, said Whelan, 48, was detained "while on a spy mission" and notified the State Department on Monday that it was holding him. He is being held in the Lefortovo Detention Facility in Moscow.

The FSB offered no other details. If he's convicted of espionage, Whelan could face up to 20 years in prison.

So how does an ex-Marine, who is allegedly visiting Russia to help a friend, get picked up as a spy? It's a case that has birthed countless theories and speculation not only about Paul Whelan, but also about America's complex relationship with Russia.

China: We'll Use Force To 'Absorb' Taiwan If Necessary
[Hot Air] 2019 is shaping up to be the year of Chinese aggression and challenges to the west. On the technological front, they just landed a spacecraft on the dark side of the moon. Far more troubling is the increasing level of military saber-rattling going on. After launching their first domestically constructed aircraft carrier, one of their admirals suggest that they might sink a couple of ours. And now, renewing a diplomatic battle that’s been going on for decades, China’s president is suggesting that they will bring Taiwan back under the direct control of Beijing, even if they have to do so by force.

Canada says 13 citizens detained in China since Huawei CFO arrest
TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada said on Thursday that 13 of its citizens have been detained in China since Huawei Technologies Co [HWT.UL] Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested last month in Vancouver at the request of the United States.

"At least" eight of those 13 have since been released, a Canadian government statement said, without disclosing what charges if any have been laid.

Prior to Thursday’s statement, detention of only three Canadian citizens had been publicly disclosed. Diplomatic tensions between Canada and China have escalated since Meng’s arrest on Dec. 1.

The Canadian government has said several times it sees no explicit link between the arrest of Meng, the daughter of Huawei’s founder, and the detentions of Canadian citizens. But Beijing-based Western diplomats and former Canadian diplomats have said they believe the detentions were a "tit-for-tat" reprisal by China.

Cargo ship's lost containers bring windfall to Dutch islanders
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dozens of containers with items including flat-screen televisions have washed up on Dutch islands in the North Sea after a ship lost part of its cargo in heavy seas, bringing a windfall for local treasure hunters.

The Dutch Coast Guard said up to 270 containers had fallen off the Panamanian-flagged MSC ZOE, one of the world’s biggest container ships, in rough weather near the German island of Borkum and floated southwest toward Dutch waters.

Containers broke open on the shores of the Dutch islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. Others were floating or stranded off the coasts of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, part of a chain of islands that guard the Dutch coast.

The Coast Guard warned ships in the area to beware of floating containers. Three containers holding hazardous materials have not yet been located, the Coast Guard said.

Dutch media reported that local treasure hunters had found an array of items from containers whose contents had spilled, including light bulbs, car parts, Ikea furniture, clothing and toys.

Local media carried pictures of groups of people congregating around beached blue containers and one carrying off what appeared to be a flatscreen TV still packed in foam.

Such material is considered flotsam, and residents of the islands have a centuries-old tradition of collecting it.

Croatia gives Israel deadline for sale of US-made fighter jets
[Al Jazeera] Croatia has urged Israel to overcome a rare disagreement with the United States and to confirm it can carry through on a deal to sell 12 used American-made fighter jets.

Croatia's Defence Ministry said on Thursday it needed an answer from Israel by January 11 or the Balkan country's $500 million order for a dozen F-16 aircraft would be cancelled.

Israel made a tentative deal to sell the upgraded F-16 Barak fighters to Croatia in March pending US approval for allowing the jets to go to a third party.

The deal ran into trouble after the US State Department hinted that Israel needs to strip off the upgrades that were added after Israel took delivery of the planes from the US some 30 years ago.

Israel upgraded the jets with sophisticated electronic and radar systems, which was crucial in Croatia's decision to buy the planes from Israel rather than from the US.

"If the planes are not in accordance with what we have agreed, the deal will not be carried out and we will have another purchase bid," Croatia's parliament speaker, Gordan Jandrokovic, said.

IGP orders probe into man’s death ‘in police custody’ in Karachi
[DAWN] A man died under controversial circumstance in the Defence area on Wednesday.
Just one? How odd.
His relatives, however, alleged that police had detained Qaim Ali and he died in their custody because of torture. But the police denied his arrest and claimed he died of a heart attack outside the house where he worked as a driver.

As the media highlighted the incident, the inspector general of police and the provincial government took notice of it and ordered an impartial probe to ascertain the veracity of the claims.

The Defence police said a man, identified as Tariq Mustafa, informed them about his driver, Qaim Ali, who he said had suffered a heart attack while sitting in his car outside his home. He sought police’s help for shifting him to a hospital, said a police spokesperson in a statement.

One dead, 15 injured in fresh clashes over India temple dispute
[DAWN] Clashes erupted between Hindu hardliners and police in the southern state of Kerala for a second day Thursday, after two women defied traditionalists to enter one of India's holiest temples.

Violence across Kerala on Wednesday left one person dead and 15 injured after news spread that the two women, escorted by police and dressed in black, had sneaked into the Sabarimala temple and prayed before dawn.

This was the first time that women of menstruating age ‐ deemed as those aged between 10 and 50 ‐ had set foot in the gold-plated temple, located on a hilltop in a tiger reserve, since India's Supreme Court overturned a ban in September.

Thousands of Hindu devotees, many of them female, had previously succeeded in preventing women from accessing the site in the weeks after the ruling, with some hardliners throwing stones at police and assaulting female journalists.

Trump May Roll Back Discrimination Regulations!!
[WaPo, via the Dallas News] The Trump administration is considering a far-reaching rollback of civil rights law that would dilute federal rules against discrimination in education, housing and other aspects of American life, people familiar with the discussions said.
How can the Orange Man roll back the law? Or are we talking about regulations?
A recent internal Justice Department memo directed senior civil rights officials to examine how decades-old "disparate impact" regulations might be changed or removed in their areas of expertise, and what the impact might be, according to people familiar with the matter. Similar action is being considered at the Education Department and is underway at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Oh my heavenly daze! Improving regulations? How is this possible?
Under the concept of disparate impact, actions can amount to discrimination if they have an uneven effect even if that was not the intent, and rolling back this regulatory approach has been a longtime goal of conservative legal thinkers. Past Republican administrations have done little to erode the concept’s application, partly out of concerns that the Supreme Court might disagree, or that such changes would be unpopular and viewed as racist by the Dems, elitists, and media drones.

In New York, a lawsuit alleges that a large apartment complex in Queens will not rent to anyone with a criminal record, and that this has the effect of discriminating against convicted criminals African American and Latino renters. The suit is pending, relying on disparate impact to make the case.

In education, the Obama administration reached settlements with school systems such as the one in Lodi, Calif., where an investigation found widespread disparities in student discipline. African American students, for instance, were five times as likely as white peers to receive out-of-school suspensions for willful defiance or disruption. In 2014, the Obama administration formally advised school systems they may be guilty of racial discrimination if students of color are punished at higher rates.
But Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School found another way to resolve that unfairness. Unfortunately, there were some unintended consequences.
Much ‐ but not all - of the disparate-impact law could be changed by the administration because even the Orange Man has limits the concept was incorporated through regulations, which administrations are free to change by following a formal process. A broad-based rewrite of regulations could affect areas such as transportation and environmental law, as well as education and housing. But it would be harder to make changes to voting and employment law, experts say, because the concept of disparate impact is overtly written into the underlying statute, not just the regulations.
A bit of perspective, well past the attention span of most readers.
Supporters of disparate-impact analysis say it is a critical tool because finding "smoking gun" evidence to prove someone intended to discriminate is difficult.
Right. Like general Michael Flynn.
And even if the intention wasn't to discriminate, advocates say institutions should be held accountable for any plausible/possible/potential discriminatory effects.

Shutdown May Look Not-So-Bad, However....
[Dallas News] Many North Texans haven't had to feel the effects of the federal government shutdown ‐ they can still catch flights, get Social Security checks, receive Medicare and Medicaid benefits and keep track of the recent storms through the National Weather Service.
So why should I read further?
But since the partial shutdown began Dec. 22, some mortgages aren't closing, tax questions to the Internal Revenue Service are going unanswered, national parks' operations are threadbare and thousands of federal employees in the state are furloughed or are working without pay.
Ooooooohhhhhhhhhhh...... I see! But don't those not getting paid get back pay? Usually?
Here’s a look at some of the people affected by the shutdown ‐ the result of a showdown between President Donald Trump and the Pelosi-controlled Congress over border wall funding ‐ as it ripples through the Dallas area and the state.
And ripples through the rest of the spider-verse.
More than 400,000 federal employees nationwide have been compelled to work without pay amid the shutdown. Among them are about 600 air traffic controllers who work in North Texas.
Sad story about children offering to give up stuff to save money at link.
[air traffic controller] Daniels said the shutdown also disrupted the installation of new technology meant to improve communications between the controllers and pilots.

The FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, which provides training for hundreds of new air traffic controllers, was also closed by the shutdown. With a "chronic understaffing" of controllers, a disruption in the hiring and training of new controllers is a serious problem.
Bad Orange Man. Bad!
Mortgage lenders often require an official transcript from the Internal Revenue Service of a borrower’s latest tax return to validate their income. The IRS is among the agencies affected by the shutdown, leaving those official transcripts unsent.
Five years ago, in Texas, I didn't need an official transcript, just a copy of two years' 1040 form.
Self-employed people ‐ whose income comes primarily from sales commissions, bonuses or tips ‐ are among those most affected, Anderson said.

National parks could remain open but with limited staff and curtailed services. Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas remains open for now. The park is open, [a visitor reports] but campgrounds and visitor centers aren't. And camping there is illegal without a permit, which visitors can't obtain because of the shutdown.
Who will ticket you for camping without a permit, I wonder?
That has left privately run lodges near the park booked up or nearly full, LeBlanc said.
Izzat a bad thing? And ... another budget-buster:
Those who are furloughed or working without a paycheck may qualify for unemployment insurance benefits, said a spokeswoman for the Texas Workforce Commission.

#1  Bobby, baby, snarky comments can be funny but not while the hurting goes on. I'll think of you when it comes your time to re-think your finances at the next downturn in the economy, but then you sound like a "self-made man" and won't have to worry about such matters.

#2  Comments intended as perspective. As for me, I am retired, on Medicare, and acutely aware of stock market fluctuations.

#3  Orange Man Bad. Bobby Baby Mean.

I'm guessing someone never worked in a stressful environment where black humor was the order of the day.

5 billion for the wall is rounding noise in the budget resolution. Given that this 'hurting' is a manufactured crisis by the opposition party to thwart our duly elected President, I'm not quite as sympathetic even though I am affected.

Who will ticket you for camping without a permit, I wonder?

Just claim to be an illegal alien and demand asylum!

0.12% is what I've seen quoted

#5  Trump should take the opportunity to push things (such as air traffic controllers) back to state responsibility. Even a number of National parks could be shifted to states.

He should also ask the Joint Chiefs if any military bases could e moved to areas along the southern border where they would act as others base and obstruction to illegal migration and drug gangs.

Try getting that back after the circus is resolved and federal employees get back pay.

Hmmm.
