(The Center Square) — Two married U.S. Army officers face long prison sentences after they were convicted of stealing more than $2 million in taxpayer-funded property from a North Carolina Army base.
Maj. Heather Hammond, 34, was convicted by a federal jury on Thursday of spending proceeds from the sale of military equipment stolen from Fort Bragg by her husband, 38-year-old CW3 Christopher Hammond.
Christopher Hammond pleaded guilty to theft of government property and money laundering the week prior.
"We are putting a stop to corruption at Fort Bragg and those who use their official positions to line their own pockets. Mr. Hammond abused his position with the Army to steal and sell government property. He stole military scopes, weapons parts, tools, welding equipment, night vision goggles and ATVs," U.S. Attorney Michael Easley said. "This gear was meant to support our troops in the fight for freedom, but the Hammonds sold it to retire in style."

CNN CEO Chris Licht circulated the news via a memo Monday.
"CNN and Don have parted ways," Licht said. "Don will forever be part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years. We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors."
Lemon tweeted Monday that he was informed that CNN fired him via his agent, UTA’s Jay Sures. "You can't fire me! I'm black and ghey!"
"I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned after 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly," Lemon wrote.
"At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play."
Lemon went on to thank his colleagues.
The anchor had been in hot water for months.
He had been the focus of an expose by Variety, which documented his past misogyny.
In February, he also was under fire after saying on air that that 51-year-old GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley ...Trump administration's former ambassador to the UN. First woman to serve as Governor of South Carolina, and the second Indian-American governor in the country, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. At the age of 39, Haley was the youngest governor in the U.S., a distinction formerly held by Jindal. She is a Republican, which really grates on the Dems... was not "in her prime."
The Post also reported that he yelled at co-anchor Kaitlan Collins after a tense on-air segment in December.
On Friday, The Post reported that White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to be interviewed by the anchor.

CNN's communications Twitter account said Lemon's public assertions about his termination are not true.
"Don Lemon’s statement about this morning’s events is inaccurate," CNN said. "He was offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter."

[SAHARAREPORTERS] No fewer than two persons have been reportedly buried alive for allegedly being behind the lightning believed to have killed one Henry Ihwakaa, his wife and a two-week-old child in the Konshisha Local Government area in Benue State, North Central Nigeria.
It was learnt that Ihwakaa, who is said to be the father of Henry, was accused by the youths of targeting people in the area with lightning strikes any time it rained.
According to the Nation, the community youths were said to have mobilised and attacked Ihwakaa and his alleged collaborator, dug a shallow grave and buried them alive.
An eyewitness who is one of the elders in the community, Engr. Baba Agan, told the newspaper that following the development, the matter was reported to the police in the Konshisha local government area following which the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) mobilised his personnel to the scene of the incident.
Unfortunately, the two persons buried alive had died by the time their bodies were exhumed.
The spokesperson for the Benue State police command, SP Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident, saying two suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime.
Anene said an investigation into the matter was ongoing.

[BBC] Australia will speed up efforts to buy longer range missiles to counter the growing threat from China, a major defence review says.
It warns the country can no longer be protected by its geographic isolation in the "missile age".
The government will spend some A$19bn ($12bn, £10bn) to deliver the report's immediate recommendations.
The 110-page study is described as the biggest overhaul of Australian defence since World War Two.
The Defence Strategic Review (DSR) comes amid increasing regional tension over China's stance towards Taiwan, which it has repeatedly vowed to take by force if necessary.
The Chinese navy has also established a major presence in the South China Sea, claiming parts of it as its own territory, contrary to international law.
"China's military build-up is now the largest and most ambitious of any country since the end of the Second World War. This build up is occurring without transparency or reassurance to the Indo-Pacific region of China's strategic intent," the report states.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the review would "shape the future rather than waiting for the future to shape us", and its recommendations would make Australia "more self-reliant, more prepared and more secure".
[MAIL] The Walt Disney Co. will be laying off several thousand employees this week, a second round of cuts that's part of a previously announced plan to eliminate 7,000 jobs this year.
The latest employee releases will take place Monday through Thursday, according to Disney officials. The company will have reached approximately 4,000 job cuts when factoring in both the first and second rounds of layoffs.

[FoxNews] A new type of spyware has been discovered being sold to various governments throughout the world and is meant to be used to spy mainly on journalists, activists, and political opponents. Here is what we know so far and how you can make sure your devices are always protected.
WHAT IS THIS NEW SPYWARE? A report released from Citizen Labreveals that the spyware, which has been given the name Reign, is being used to monitor the activities of targeted high-profile individuals. The Microsoft Threat Intelligence team was able to analyze the spyware and found that it was provided by the Israeli company QuaDream.
QuaDream is known for developing advanced spyware tools and caters to several prominent governments throughout the world. There have been at least five targeted spyware cases in North America, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
HOW DOES REIGN ATTACK PEOPLE'S DEVICES?
The spyware reaches all these devices through what is known as the "Endofdays" iOS 14 zero-click exploit. This uses backdated iCloud calendar invites that when sent to targeted people are automatically accepted. Once the invitation is on a person's device, spyware operators can access multiple iOS features. Hackers can get to your audio recordings of calls, iPhone microphone and camera access, access to the iPhone Files app, iPhone location tracking, generation of iCloud 2FA passwords, and more.
HOW WAS REIGN DISCOVERED?
Reign was discovered because it comes with a feature that ironically was supposed to help it remain undiscoverable. The feature was one of self-destruction where Reign could remove traces of itself on a device so that no one would be able to find it. However, this ended up helping research teams in identifying when a target was attacked.
It is believed by Citizen Lab that QuaDream's spyware has been linked to over 600 servers and 200 domains since late 2021. The company also believes that QuaDream spyware is currently operating in the following countries:
Czech Republic
Hungary
Ghana
Bulgaria
Romania
Israel
Mexico
United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Uzbekistan
Singapore
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM SPYWARE?
Although Reign has not yet been detected as a threat to the U.S. government, and it doesn't seem to be targeting citizens with low-profile statuses, it's important that you still know how to protect yourself from spyware.

The best thing is to not use or carry a phone... I leave mine in the truck, truck is traceable as well through norstar. I hate this. We talk about stuff and it shows up as adds, opening our phones listening to conversations and all is at the USG fingertips. They talk about the threat to the USG, not the systems the USG is currently using which exceeds this things capability....
