Man with 20-year rap sheet accused of murder after police find body of his girlfriend in Las Vegas home, witness allegedly provided alarming details
[Blaze] A Las Vegas man with a 20-year rap sheet is accused of murder after police allegedly discovered the dead body of his girlfriend in the Nevada home.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, a man reportedly entered the Southeast Area Command Center for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to report the murder of a person. The informant allegedly told police that he was "fearful that if anyone knew he was at the police station, he would be killed."

According to the police report, the man informed authorities that two days prior, he had heard a heated argument between James Gina III and his girlfriend, Celina Rebholz.

KLAS-TV reported, "According to the report, Rebholz was calling Gina a pedophile, the witness said it sounded like Rebholz was throwing things. The witness heard Gina tell Rebholz, 'I'll put three in you if you don’t shut up,' referring to shooting Rebholz three times."

James L. Buckley, 1923-2023
[WSJ] A patriot who served at high levels in all three branches of government.

It’s a pity James L. Buckley isn’t as well known as his younger brother, William F. Buckley Jr. Bill was the conservative intellectual, magazine editor and TV star. Jim Buckley had as distinguished a career serving at a high level in all three branches of government. He died Friday at age 100.

Jim Buckley served in the Navy in World War II, participating in the battles of Leyte and Okinawa. In 1970 he won a three-way race for Senate from New York on the Conservative Party line. He won 39% of the vote to defeat liberal Republican Charles Goodell and Democrat Richard Ottinger in one of the most surprising upsets in Senate history.

Buckley served one term before losing in that overwhelmingly Democratic state to Daniel Patrick Moynihan in 1976. But he left his mark on the Senate and the law when he challenged a campaign finance law on grounds that campaign expenditure is a form of political speech. He won a partial victory in 1976 in Buckley v. Valeo, but that precedent made possible the 2010 landmark in Citizens United v. FEC.

Everywhere he took an interest he left a mark. The Buckley Amendment, otherwise known as the Family Education Rights and Policy Act of 1974, directed that parents have the right to see their children’s school records. Also that year Buckley became the first conservative member of the GOP Senate conference to call on Richard Nixon to resign amid the Watergate scandal.

Buckley served in the Reagan Administration as Under Secretary of State for International Security Affairs, and Reagan later nominated him for a seat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. He served on that court with distinction as an active judge for 11 years and was still serving on senior status when he died Friday.

Buckley’s particular concern was what he saw as the erosion of respect for the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution. That amendment says all powers not assigned to the federal government are reserved to the states.

Buckley elaborated on that theme often, including in these pages. In a 2020 speech, he said that federal money has brought about "an avalanche of regulation-ridden programs that now provide federal subsidies for virtually every activity in which states are engaged." He expounded on this theme in his 2010 book, "Freedom at Risk: Reflections on Politics, Liberty, and the State."

Buckley proved that a man could take strong stands without being unlikable. It is common today to lament the incivility of political discourse. Jim Buckley’s long life offers a model of something better for all times.

Experts explain how many cups of coffee you should drink daily
[GEO.TV] Studies have revealed a number of benefits of drinking coffee such as the reduced risk of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. People also drink it to boost energy and refreshen their mood.

But other researchers have found a link between heavy intake of coffee and diseases like that of heart, stroke, and dementia. Then how much coffee one should drink?

Evidence suggests that normal intake is not bad for health, but it should not be consumed for health benefits, according to an NBC News report which quoted a member of the American Society for Nutrition, Tricia Psota as saying.

"I would never recommend that individuals who don't consume caffeinated beverages start incorporating them into their day for any reason," Psota said.

HOW MUCH COFFEE IS BAD?
According to the Food and Drug Administration, it should be at 400 milligrams daily, or around four or five 8-ounce cups.

It further said that people would not feel the effects of caffeine such as erratic heartbeat, or vomiting, unless they drink about 12 cups a day.

But 400 milligrams can sometimes come with undesirable side effects, including anxiety and trouble sleeping, Psota said.

She also underlined that bodies have different tolerance levels as the body can't tolerate more than one or two cups a day. "So I definitely stay below that FDA recommendation," she said.

#1  Short version: The whole thing works by gravity. Galliard Lake in the mountains holds water, and it flows down through the lock system and out to sea as the locks are used. They had a drought for the last couple of years, it's all still tropical jungle and all, but the new oversized locks are passing more water than the original setup allowed.
It's kinda like taking a highway bridge and converting it to double decker to increase capacity, and the complaining about the traffic jams at both ends.

Hurriquake: 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Los Angeles During Historic Tropical Storm

#2  Heavy rains only affect earthquake incidence if they occur in limestone rich areas where they can erode the rocks near the fault. In this case, the high fluid pressure at the base of the water column can be transmitted to depth and induce earthquakes from increasing fluid pressure. The common misconception is that all the water decreases friction allowing movement. These quakes are miles deep so no water intrusion as a direct cause.

Water may have an impact on earthquakes where tectonic plates converge. e.g. Taiwan. In Kaliphornia, the plates slip past each other.

The real danger here is that within 10M years, LA and SF will merge and become a giant shit hole of a place rather that 2 smaller ones as Democrats will still be in charge.

Powerful storm Hilary lashes California, as masses panic amid warnings
[GEO.TV] As the powerful storm Hilary rushed to the southwestern part of the United States entering from Mexico, heavy rains lashed Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Sunday causing panic among people after authorities launched evacuation efforts to save lives amid a life-threatening flood warning.

Mexican authorities reported that at least one person was dead after flood water swept roads. Images on social media showed raging torrents gushing down city streets that have been turned into rivers.

Officials warned residents to stay indoors and keep emergency supplies in hand. Airport operations in San Diego and Los Angeles were forced to halt with sporting events in the area cancelled.

About 250 flights set for Sunday at the San Diego International Airport have been called off and another 382 Monday, according to the FlightAware website.

Storm Hilary, which made landfall earlier in the day in the northern part of the Baja California peninsula, has been weakening over the last 48 hours.

Gabon's main opposition parties name joint candidate for Aug. 26 presidential polls
[AFRICANEWS] Gabonese Francois Ndong Obiang, president of the Alternance 2023 opposition grouping, said Friday (Aug. 18) that the main opposition figures, who had previously been looking at selecting their own separate candidates, had surprised everyone by picking a "consensus" candidate.
**

The man who will attempt to unseat Bongo is former education minister Albert Ondo Ossa.

President Bongo's family has ruled the oil-rich West African state for 55 years.

"You have before you the consensus candidate", declared 69-year-old Ondo Ossa, in front of the few bully boyz gathered at the headquarters of the opposition Reagir party.

"I'm particularly moved and I'd like to thank all the party presidents", he added, calling for strong mobilisation with so little time left before the August 26 polls.

Launched in January, Alternance 2023 brings together six opposition groupings and has regularly held talks with the aim of establishing a joint candidacy, the only way, in its view, of avoiding splitting the vote to the benefit of the incumbent.

The Gabonese Election Centre had already validated 19 of the 27 candidacy applications received, five more than in 2016.

Far from being the favourite, Ondo Ossa had been up against leading rivals including Alexandre Barro Chambrier of the opposition Rally for the Fatherland and Modernity (RPM) party and the National Union's head Paulette Missambo as well as a former Bongo prime minister Raymond Ndong Sima.

But now the six candidates belonging to the opposition alliance have all undertaken to withdraw their candidacy in favour of the consensus candidate, Ndong Obiang assured.

The 64-year-old President Bongo, who took over from his father Omar Bongo Ondimba in 2009, officially announced in July that he would run again for president.

The president was narrowly re-elected in 2016, with just 5,500 more votes than rival Jean Ping, who claimed the election had been fixed.

Bongo suffered a stroke in 2018 and spent months on the sidelines recovering, leaving the opposition to question his fitness to run the nation

China-Japan-Koreas
Company behind Michigan electric vehicle battery plant registered as Chinese foreign organization
[Just The News] he company responsible for a controversial electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan is registered under U.S. law as a foreign entity, filings show.

While the energy company Gotion, Inc. is based out of Fremont, Calif., Foreign Agents Registration Act documents filed by the corporation earlier this year show that it "is wholly owned and controlled" by Gotion High-Tech, which is based out of Hefei, a city in eastern China.

Michigan residents, Republicans and environmental groups have voiced opposition to Gotion's plans to build a $2.4 billion electric vehicle battery plant near Big Rapids with more than $1 billion in taxpayer support.

The Chinese parent company's governing articles state: "The Company shall set up a Party organization and carry out Party activities in accordance with the Constitution of the Communist Party of China."

Gotion's "Party Committee" will ensure the company follows the Chinese Communist Party's regulations and "lead the ideological and political work, united front work, spiritual civilization construction, enterprise culture construction, labor union, Communist Youth League and other mass work of the Company; lead the construction of Party conduct and clean government, and support the Commission for Discipline Inspection," per the articles.

All businesses in China, including foreign ones, are required under the law to have such committees with three or more party members, according to Bloomberg.

FBI Is Preventing the Release of FOIA Requests Related to Seth Rich – Again!
[Gateway] Another FOIA request and another cover-up from today’s FBI.

The number of lies the FBI has made about Seth Rich continues to add up.

The latest lie before today was that the Mueller gang said Seth Rich had nothing to do with the transfer of DNC-related emails to WikiLeaks, and yet they never even looked at his laptop which was in their possession.

There were many stories on Rich that I reported at The Gateway Pundit.

One report even suggested that there were discussions of assassinations in the documents released by the FBI.

No wonder the FBI is doing all it can to hide information related to Seth Rich’s murder.

This week the FBI did it again.

The FBI is hiding entire records systems from FOIA requestors and using links to systems that don’t work.

Here is the filing stating the FBI is at it again.

#5  They know Seth Rich was assassinated for the actual DNC "hack" and what it revealed. That they went along with the "Oscar Mayer" Crowdstrike assessment of the DNC server and the Seth Rich non-investigation showed how deeply 8 years of Holder and Lynch bent the senior leadership of the Bureau. Far too many senior leaders are now complicit in corrupt/biased conduct over the course of their career, undoubtedly some at a criminal level, to think the Bureau will cleanse itself. Absent Trump, for all his warts, what other Herculean political figure would try and cleanse the DoJ/FBI Augean stable?

Iraq
Iraq achieves self-sufficiency in wheat production for 2023
It’s been a rough year since Russia confiscated Ukraine’s wheat crop as part of their Not War thingy, but I’m sure Iraqi farmers are not the only ones who responded.
[Shafaq News] The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat production for the current year 2023, eliminating the need for wheat imports.

According to Deputy Minister Mithaq Abdul Hussein al-Khafaji, the Iraqi government has allocated financial support for farmers and agricultural crops in the general budget law. This support has contributed to the successful wheat harvest, allowing Iraq to produce more than 5 million tons of wheat this year, a quantity sufficient to sustain the food basket without requiring imports.

Al-Khafaji affirmed the ministry's intention to increase support for farmers in the coming year, despite the challenges posed by climate change and rising temperatures. He emphasized that the ministry is adopting new methods that can adapt to water scarcity, utilizing machinery and equipment to enhance production.

The Agriculture Minister, Abbas al-Aliawi, previously informed Shafaq News Agency that Iraq had officially cultivated approximately 8 million dunams of land. Around 4 million dunams were cultivated in desert lands, and an additional 2.5 million dunams in irrigated lands. Recently, approximately 1.5 million dunams were cultivated in various Iraqi provinces.

Last May, the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture declared the successful marketing season for the 2022-2023 wheat harvest and confirmed that all dues owed to farmers had been disbursed smoothly.

#1  Amazing how the market can work when it is allowed to. Among all the hand-wringing about shortages of Ukraine grain, no one seems to have considered that other grain-growing areas might take up the slack. Well done, Iraqi farmers!

#2  the ministry is adopting new methods

Couldn't grow more, so they mandated 'the people' eat less.

Israeli scientists find forgotten immune strategy to fight viruses
[Jerusalem Post] Different species have a forgotten innate protein that has the ability to fight off viruses, according to a study by the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Everything needs energy. Every time we use our smartphones, send a text message, or watch a video, some of the energy stored in the battery is depleted. Living cells also store energy in "currencies" they can cash in when needed to fuel life processes.

The main energy "currency" of all living things on Earth — the lithium battery that powers the living world, as it were — is a molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). However, even though charging cells with ATP molecules is of vital importance, it has now been discovered that discharging them could be no less crucial and even lifesaving.

In a study just published in the journal Cell under the title "Ultrafast distant wound response is essential for whole-body regeneration," researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot have described a new family of proteins that deplete cells of their energy, thereby protecting the cells from invaders.

THE BODY'S FORGOTTEN INNATE ARMY TO FEND OFF VIRUSES
The scientists showed that this previously unknown immune mechanism doesn’t exist only in single-celled organisms; it has been preserved for more than a billion years of evolution and is used by many living creatures, from corals to bees.

The newly revealed strategy is the latest of more than 100 recently discovered sophisticated mechanisms used by bacteria in their heroic battle against bacteriophages — the viruses that attack bacteria. Many of these mechanisms were discovered and described in the lab of Prof. Rotem Sorek in Weizmann’s molecular genetics department.
