RSF forces raid Al-Jazhira's town, looting market and government facilities
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A Rapid Support Forces (RSF) unit on Thursday raided the town of Abu Quta, northwest of al-Jazira State, adjacent to Khartoum State, and plundered the main market and government buildings.

According to a resident of Abu Quta, the RSF arrived from the Jabal Aulia area, situated about 40 kilometres south of Khartoum. He revealed that the RSF’s primary objective was to obtain food supplies and fuel.

"The RSF members looted stores to acquire sugar, flour, tea, meat, and vegetables, taking advantage of the town’s weekly market day," he told Sudan

It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
Tribune.

The resident also reported that the cop shoppe was vandalized, the Agricultural Bank branch was looted, and several civilian vehicles were stolen by the RSF before fleeing the area when military aircraft flew overhead, refraining from attacking any military targets.

As the RSF entered Abu Quta in the morning, firing heavy bullets, panic ensued, though fortunately, there were no civilian casualties.

Al-Jazira Governor al-Tahir Ibrahim al-Khair strongly condemned the assault on Abu Quta, describing it as a blatant attempt by the RSF to plunder and terrorize civilians.

In statements to the official Sudan News Agency, the governor affirmed that his state government has taken decisive measures to prevent the recurrence of RSF attacks on areas bordering Khartoum state.

Previously, al-Tahir told news hounds that the al-Jazira government, following a security committee meeting, decided to deploy substantial military reinforcements to Abu Quta in reaction to the assault by the Rapid Support Forces.

The RSF forces in Jabel Aulia are grappling with challenges such as a shortage of food supplies and fuel due to the siege imposed on them by the army in the northern states of al-Jazira and the White Nile.

Consequently, the paramilitary forces can no longer receive supplies from western Sudan. Sources indicate that the RSF are preparing to dispatch troops to Omdurman to seize some army-controlled bridges to ensure the supply of their forces in Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri towns.

DRC: 200 ADF rebels killed in Ugandan strikes in September
[AFRICANEWS] Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said Wednesday that around 200 members of the ADF rebels affiliated with the Islamic State group were killed in Ugandan-led airstrikes in September in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Originally mainly Muslim Ugandan rebels, the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) have been active since the mid-1990s in eastern DRC, where they have killed thousands of civilians. In 2019, they pledged allegiance to ISIS, which now claims some of their actions and presents them as its "Central African province".

“We carried out air attacks against terrorists in Congo,” President Yoweri Museveni declared on X (ex-Twitter), before asserting that “about 200 of them were killed” in strikes carried out on September 16.

Since those in September, other strikes have been carried out, said Mr. Museveni, without giving further details. Contacted by AFP, the spokesperson for the Ugandan army, Felix Kulayigye, clarified that the president was referring to the ADF rebels.

They are accused of having massacred thousands of civilians in the DRC in recent years and of carrying out jihadist attacks on Ugandan soil.

Uganda and the DRC launched a joint offensive in 2021 to drive the ADF from their Congolese strongholds, failing so far to end the group's attacks.

The United States announced in early March that it was offering a reward of up to $5 million for any information likely to lead to their leader, a Ugandan in his forties named Musa Baluku.

In October, two tourists, a British man and a South African woman on their honeymoon, as well as their guide were killed in Queen Elizabeth Park (west), in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. The leader of the ADF rebel group accused of the murders was arrested in early November by Kampala.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is only 29 kilometers (18 miles) wide at its narrowest point, limiting traffic to two channels for inbound and outbound shipments, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Nearly 10% of all oil traded at sea passes through it. An estimated $1 trillion in goods pass through the strait annually.

In November, Houthis seized a vehicle transport ship linked to Israel in the Red Sea off Yemen. The rebels still hold the vessel near the port city of Hodeida. Separately, a container ship owned by an Israeli billionaire came under attack by a suspected Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean.

A separate, tentative cease-fire between the Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition fighting on behalf of Yemen’s exiled government has held for months despite that country’s long war. That has raised concerns that any wider conflict in the sea — or a potential reprisal strike from Western forces — could reignite those tensions in the Arab world’s poorest nation.

Yemen's Houthis defeat Israel in naval war
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Kirill Semenov

[REGNUM] A spokesman for Yemen's Zaydi movement Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis,Yahya Saria said on December 11 that their armed forces .“will continue to prevent the passage of all ships of any jurisdiction heading to Israeli ports in the Arab and Red Seas, except if they are carrying food and humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip”

The Houthi spokesman also admitted that Ansar Allah hit the Norwegian tanker Motor Transport STRINDA, which was heading to Israel,
...actually, she was headed to the Suez Canal and then Italy. Israel was never part of her itinerary. But please don’t let reality get in the way of useful exposition...
with an anti-ship missile, after which a fire broke out there. Earlier this was reported by official representatives of the UK and the USA. The tanker was attacked approximately 60 nautical miles north of Bab al-Mandeb. It is a narrow strait between Yemen and the northeast coast of Africa, connecting the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea.

HOUTHI MILITARY CAPABILITIES
The fact that Ansar Allah plans to increase attacks on Israeli ships was stated in a speech on November 14 by the leader of the movement Abdal Malik al-Houthi. He warned:"Our eyes are open to constantly monitor and search for any Israeli ship in the Red Sea, especially in Bab al-Mandeb and near Yemeni territorial waters."

Five days later, the Houthis, landing from an Mi-17 helicopter, seized the Galaxy Leader, owned by the Israeli company Ray Shipping Limited.

But, in addition to helicopter landings for operations against warships and vessels, Ansar Allah has a large arsenal of weapons that were demonstrated at military parades, including last September.

In particular, the Yemeni rebels still have Soviet-made anti-ship missiles (ASMs) in their arsenal, which are used in coastal defense. These include two types of missiles, P-15 and P-15M (SS-N-2 Styx according to NATO classification), which the Houthis inherited from the Yemeni army, which ceased to exist in 2014.

Although these missiles have long been considered obsolete for use against warships, their 500 kg warhead still poses a serious threat to transport ships lacking air defense and electronic warfare.

Ansar Allah also showed Mandeb-1 and 2 anti-ship missiles - copies of Iranian Noor missiles, which, in turn, go back to the Chinese S-801/802 radar-guided missiles. Mandeb are more modern and maneuverable anti-ship missiles, capable of hitting a warship under favorable conditions. During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Lebanese Hezbollah demonstrated this by damaging the Israeli corvette INS Hanit with a C-802 missile.

But the most interesting new addition to the Ansar Allah anti-ship arsenal are ballistic missiles designed to attack naval targets.

These are primarily the Al-Bahr Al-Ahmar (Red Sea), optimized to engage sea targets at a distance of up to 200 miles, and the Aasif, a solid-fuel missile capable of delivering a 550-kilogram warhead to a distance of 215 miles with high accuracy. Both missiles are intended for use as coastal defense weapons and appear to be modifications of the Iranian Halij Fars (Persian Gulf) missile, based on the Fatah-110 surface-to-surface missile.

Also a ballistic anti-ship missile is the Moheet, a first-generation Soviet S-75 Dvina (SA-2) Soviet air defense missile converted by the Houthis (or Iranians) for firing at sea targets.

In addition to missiles, Ansar Allah also has other means to destroy transport and commercial ships heading to Israel. Among the “new products” one can name, for example, Toufan 3, a remote-controlled kamikaze boat filled with 500 kg of high explosives to destroy ships and vessels.

Or Asef-2 - an electronic warfare and electronic reconnaissance attack fast boat, also designed to destroy sea targets. In addition, it can provide radar cover and serve as an electronic warfare capability for a “flock” of similar attack boats approaching a target.

Finally, the Houthis have a stockpile of ground mines, such as the Soviet-made MDM-1, also displayed by Ansar Allah in their parades in Yemen.

It is these strike weapons that are used in current attacks.

Thus, on November 26, the Central Park tanker sent a distress signal in the Red Sea, which required the intervention of the American destroyer USS Mason. It remains unclear whether the attack was by Somali pirates or Houthis. However, after Mason arrived in the attack area, he was attacked by a ballistic missile fired from Houthi territory, which missed its target. Notably, this is the second Houthi attack on a specific destroyer since 2016.

And on December 3, Ansar Allah forces attacked at least two ships in the southern Red Sea with missiles and drones: a bulk carrier and a container ship. One of the ships, Unity Explorer, is operated by the British company Unity Maritime, but the company's staff includes Dan David Ungar, the son of an Israeli shipping magnate. a>

WHY IS EILAT DESERTED?
The Houthi attacks are already bearing fruit. Shipping industry officials have been rerouting some Israeli-linked ships since early November and have raised concerns about an increase in attacks. But now that Ansar Allah has launched what is essentially a full-scale naval war, there are much wider economic consequences that threaten all shipping in the Red Sea.

Some ships associated with Israeli owners were observed to bypass the Suez Canal and Red Sea by taking the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope. This increased not only the transit time, but also the cost of the transported goods.

Shipping insurers have long responded to the escalation of maritime operations and bellicose rhetoric by the Houthis. The Ansar Allah statements themselves have already had“an impact on shipping insurance, even if the conflict remains under control”says the Eurasia Group in a statement dated 15 November

And after the Yemeni rebels became more active and began to attack more and more ships associated with Israel, the situation worsened. In particular, the only Israeli Red Sea port on the Gulf of Aqaba, Eilat, was deserted, having lost 85 percent of its profits.

RICH OPERATION EXPERIENCE
It should be noted that the Houthis have considerable experience in naval warfare, acquired in 2015–2022. during the war with the Saudi Arabian (KSA) and UAE-led coalition.

For example, in 2018, they targeted crude oil tankers belonging to Bahri, KSA's national shipping carrier, and attacked ships passing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. In response, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Energy suspended oil shipments through the narrow passage for approximately twelve days.

Warships from the anti-Houthi coalition countries and even an American destroyer were also attacked.

On October 1, 2016, an anti-ship missile launched from a Houthi-controlled coastal missile site severely damaged the HSV-2 Swift catamaran beyond repair. Swift is a former high-speed US Navy ship sold to the United Arab Emirates and operated by the anti-Houthi coalition as an amphibious logistics ship.

Then the United States sent its warships, led by the destroyer URO Mason, to guard shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which provoked the first military clash between the United States and the Houthis.

Over the next two weeks after the Swift strike, USS Mason repelled two Ansar Allah missile attacks. This prompted Washington to order Tomahawk cruise missile strikes against Houthi radars on the coast. However, this did not stop the Yemeni rebels, who at the very beginning of 2017 hit the Saudi frigate Al Madinah with a kamikaze boat.

SAUDI ARABIA IS CHANGING APPROACHES
Now, to protect Israeli shipping and counter the Houthis, the United States is moving to create a dedicated naval command with a squadron of interested countries.

Thus, the French guided missile frigate Languedoc joined the two American guided missile destroyers USS Mason and USS Carney, located in the Houthi activity zone. The latter has already distinguished himself by shooting down a Yemeni attack drone. In addition, the Japanese destroyer MSDF Akebono operates in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait area in close coordination with American and French ships.

However, the creation of such a broad anti-Houthi coalition under the auspices of the United States may now have the opposite effect against the backdrop of events in Gaza.

Previously, the “Arab street” perceived the Houthis as Iranian proxies carrying out “Tehran’s orders against the Arabs.” However, Ansar Allah is now seen as a force that has challenged not only Israel, but the entire collective West covering up the IDF's crimes in Gaza.

Therefore, the majority of Arabs in the current situation will sympathize with the Houthis, and this also affects decision-making in Arab capitals. In fact, the only people who directly stated support for the plans of the United States and the West were representatives of the Yemeni government opposing the Houthis.

It is significant that the Houthis’ attacks on Bahraini soldiers stationed on the Yemeni border in Saudi Arabia also remained unanswered. Riyadh limited itself only to condemnatory rhetoric. For many Arabs, Bahrain, with its apparent pro-Israel statements, looks like Tel Aviv's Trojan horse in the Arab world.

Also in the current situation, Saudi Arabia, yesterday’s existential enemy of the Houthis, is beginning to coordinate its steps with Iran in order to prevent a broad military campaign by the United States and its allies against Ansar Allah. In particular, Saudi Arabia asked the United States to show restraint in response to Yemen's Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea to avoid further escalation.

“They (the Saudis. - Ed.) are putting pressure on the Americans about this and about the conflict in Gaza stopped”, informed sources told Reuters.

Saudi Arabia sees the only way out of the current situation in ending the destructive Israeli attacks on Gaza, which Riyadh calls a “barbaric war” against the Palestinians. In the current climate, Saudi diplomacy reflects a broader policy aimed at promoting regional stability. This approach replaces US and Israeli support for potential military action against the Houthis after years of confrontation with Iran and its allies.

It is significant that earlier, during the war in Yemen, Riyadh itself repeatedly appealed to Washington about joining the US Armed Forces in the fighting against Ansar Allah. But those times are gone.

Focusing on economic expansion and diversification under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has already normalized relations with Iran. It is seeking to exit the war it has waged with the Houthis for almost nine years and is extremely uninterested in resuming escalation under any pretext.

Yemen has experienced relative calm for more than a year amid direct peace talks between Riyadh and Ansar Allah. And the Houthis themselves are becoming an increasingly significant and independent factor in Middle Eastern politics, while the conflict between Hamas and Israel is spreading further and further beyond the borders of Gaza, threatening to awaken other frozen conflicts in the region.

More from RIA Novosti:
"Media: US will announce the deployment of a group to contain the Houthis

The United States is expected to announce on Friday the deployment of coalition forces in the Red Sea to deter Houthi attacks on civilian ships, the portal reports with reference to American and Israeli officials.

We are talking, according to the portal, about a “special reinforced multinational task force.”

The portal, citing American officials, also reports that the US administration recently sent warnings to the Houthis through several channels demanding that they stop attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking, who visited the Persian Gulf countries in recent days convey to the Houthis that the United States is extremely concerned about attacks by Yemeni rebels that threaten freedom of navigation in international waters. Qatar and Oman, Saudi Arabia, asked his colleagues in
Several countries in the region have already conveyed similar messages to the Houthis over the past two weeks, the sources said. According to American officials, these warnings have not yet had an effect on the Houthis.

At a briefing on Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said information about the task force would be presented soon.

Previously, the Yemeni Houthis stated that they would continue to prevent the passage in the Red and Arabian seas of ships associated with Israeli companies or going to Israel, until the cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

She has, after all, been contented until now to leave that responsibility to the major naval powers — primarily America, I imagine, now that most other countries have let their navies wither. Should they not act in a timely and effective manner, Bibi Netanyahu has committed to Do Something About It, but right now they are in the middle of destroying Hamas & friends.

Suspected Hamas members arrested in Germany, Netherlands and Denmark for planning terrorist attacks
[TWITTER]

Mossad, Shin Bet hail Denmark for foiling alleged Hamas-linked terror plot on Danish soil

[IsraelTimes] The Mossad and the Shin Bet hail Denmark’s intelligence agencies for their "intensive and comprehensive intelligence investigation" that led to the arrest in Denmark of "seven terrorist operatives acting on behalf of the terrorist organization Hamas
...the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,...
, and foiled an attack aimed at killing innocent citizens on European soil," according to a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Danish authorities said today they prevented a terror attack, after three arrests in Denmark and a fourth in the Netherlands. Officials did not go into details of the suspects or give any indication as to the possible target of the alleged plot.

The discrepancy in the number of arrests between the Israeli statement and the Danish announcement was not immediately clear

"It was a group that was planning an act of terror," Flemming Drejer, head of operations at the PET intelligence service, told a news conference today.

There were "ramifications involving other countries" and organized crime, he added.

"In recent years, and even more so after the murderous attack on October 7, Hamas strives to expand its operational capabilities around the world and in Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
in particular in order to realize its ambitions to hit Israeli, Jewish and Western targets at any cost," the Mossad and Shin Bet say in the statement.

The Israeli security agencies say they back "our partners in the intelligence and security bodies in Denmark for the successful countermeasures that culminated today with the realization of the arrests and the extensive exposure of Hamas infrastructure on European soil," and urged legal proceedings against the suspects.

Denmark’s foreign intelligence service, known as FE, reported earlier in its annual assessment for 2023 that "the war between Israel and Hamas has once again shown that unresolved conflicts in Europe’s immediate area can escalate rapidly and create widespread regional instability."

Earlier this month, the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
’s home affairs commissioner, Ylva Johansson, warned that Europe faces a "huge risk of terrorist attacks" over the Christmas holiday period due to the fallout from the war.

"This is extremely serious," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says at a European Union summit in Brussels today. "It shows the situation we are in in Denmark. Unfortunately."

"It is absolutely true when both (Denmark’s intelligence agencies) say that there is a high risk in Denmark," Frederiksen said. "It is of course completely unacceptable in relation to Israel and Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. The Mossad and Shin Bet say "Hamas works indiscriminately and in every way to expand its deadly activities to Europe, thus posing a threat to the internal security of these countries."

"The Mossad and the Shin Bet will continue to operate in a combination of forces and capabilities with their partners in Israel and around the world in order to repel the intentions of Hamas and eliminate its capabilities," they say.

In the Netherlands, broadcaster NOS reported that a 57-year-old Dutch man was arrested in Rotterdam based on a request from German authorities.

Drejer said that the case had “threads abroad” and “was related to criminal gangs,” singling out the banned gang Loyal to Familia.

In January 2020, a Danish court upheld a nationwide police ban on the gang, saying that the LTF should be dissolved as illegal under Denmark’s constitution.

The gang had been behind feuds, violence, robberies, extortion and drug sales in the Danish capital and “had used violence and illegal means to achieve its goal,” the Copenhagen District Court said then. In September 2018, police in Denmark issued a temporary ban against the LTF and said anyone seen wearing its logo could face prosecution.

“Persons abroad have been charged,” he said, adding that the suspects would face a custody hearing within 24 hours, likely behind “double closed doors,” meaning that he could not give details about the case, any target or motive.

#1  Big Whoop!

We have to succeed every time while they need to succeed only once.

And when and if they succeed mounting an attack on the scale of Colombo in 2019 or Bataclan the Western political class will respond by kowtowing before Islam and making concessions to Muslims.

Nuts!

Radical Pro-Palestinian Leftists Shut Down L.A.'s 110 Freeway; 75 Arrests
[Breitbart] Police arrested 75 people for blocking Interstate 110 in Los Angeles on Wednesday as part of a pro-Palestinian protest demanding a “ceasefire” in Gaza — one that would leave the Hamas terror group in power, with over 100 civilian hostages taken from Israel.

Local Fox affiliate KTTV-11 reported:

Dozens of protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war halted traffic for close to two hours on the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday.

A group called IfNotNow
...part of the Soros Open Society Foundations group of Jewishly fig-leafed, anti-Israel groups originally intended to replace the centrist AIPAC. Some members are indeed of Jewish descent, but the drive of the group is radical leftism...
Los Angeles had announced plans for a downtown protest although the organization did not indicate it intended to shut down the freeway. The group called the protest “to demand that all of our elected officials call for a lasting ceasefire and an end to U.S. support for Israel’s war on Gaza.”

SkyFOX images from the scene showed the group sitting on the freeway next to a 7-foot menorah. At one point, frustrated drivers were seen arguing and even shoving some protesters.

The Los Angeles Times persisted in calling the group “IfNotNow” Jewish, though it is not representatives of the Jewish community, which supports Israel.

IfNotNow has actually targeted Jewish groups for abuse, and has given moral support to Hamas terrorists in the past. It once formally mourned Hamas members who “protested” at the Gaza border fence in an attempt to break through and invade Israel in 2018, and who were shot and killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

#1  How many ambulances/ firetrucks/ police /emergency services were prevented from doing their jobs to aid the citizens of LA? We know the names of those arrested. Lawsuits should ensue to hold them financially responsible. Not the severity of punishment I would like and will not affect the powers that fund them but might have a pour l’encouragement des autres effect. Make the process the punishment as much as possible. At least two dozen protesters are detained and zip-tied on median after pro-Palestine protest on Philadelphia expressway I-76 during rush hour
  • Over 30 ceasefire backers were arrested after they blocked a Philly highway on Thursday

  • A group of about 150 people first took to the bridge over I-76 and hung posters before more got out of their cars down below and blocked the expressway

  • Similar demonstrations took place in Washington, D.C., on Thursday and in Los Angeles on Wednesday

At least two dozen pro-Palestine protesters were detained and zip-tied as they blocked Philadelphia's I-76 Thursday evening.

The protesters called for a ceasefire in Gaza as they lined up and blocked traffic on the westbound lanes of the Schuylkill Expressway in Center City near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Police reported a group of about 150 people with Jewish Voice for Peace started to gather on the Spring Garden Street Bridge around 3.30pm as they hung banners that said 'Let Gaza Live' and 'Ceasefire Now.'

Protestors below the bridge then hopped out of cars and shut down lanes on I-76 as Pennsylvania State Police and Philadelphia police approached the group.

Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford said that 32 people were arrested and will be cited.

Twelve Palestinians killed, West Bank mosque desecrated during Israel raids UPDATE: Israel wraps up 60-hour battle in Jenin
[GEO.TV] Israeli troops have killed 12 Paleostinians in three days of raids in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, including one youth rubbed out at a hospital, Paleostinian officials and international health charities said on Thursday.

The operation inside Jenin was met with anger by the Paleostinian government, which described a "dangerous escalation" and criticised the desecration of a mosque by some Israeli troops. Israel's army said it would discipline the soldiers.

Images circulating on social media and verified by Rooters showed soldiers inside a mosque in Jenin using a microphone to read a Jewish prayer in the style of an Islamic call to prayer.

The view from Israel:
IDF wraps up Jenin counter-terror operation after 60 hours, seizes weapons and explosive devices

[IsraelTimes] The IDF says that after 60 hours it has wrapped up its counter-terrorism operation in the northern West Bank’s Jenin and adjacent refugee camp.

According to the IDF, the troops scanned hundreds of buildings, arrested 60 wanted Paleostinians, and seized 50 weapons and hundreds of bombs.

The IDF says the troops also found more than 10 tunnel shafts, seven labs used to manufacture bombs, and five war rooms used by local terror operatives to monitor IDF operations. Some of the sites were blown up by the troops.

Amid the lengthy raid, the IDF says it carried out two dronezaps against groups of armed Paleostinians hurling bombs and shooting at troops.

It says 10 armed Paleostinians were killed during the raid, including seven in the dronezaps, and others were maimed.

Seven IDF soldiers were lightly hurt in the operation, it adds.

Separately, in other areas of the West Bank, the IDF says it detained 14 wanted Paleostinians, including three Hamas
...the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,...
members, in overnight raids.

#1  I seem to remember...
From 2 April to 10 May 2002, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in the West Bank was besieged by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), targeting suspected Palestinian militants who had taken shelter in the church.

As part of Operation Defensive Shield, the IDF occupied Bethlehem and attempted to capture suspected Palestinian militants.[4] Dozens of them fled into the Church of the Nativity and sought refuge. IDF surrounded the site and besieged the suspected militants and non-militants at the site, which included approximately 200 monks resident in the church and other Palestinians who had arrived at the site for other reasons. The Franciscan Order maintained no hostages were held, while Israeli sources claimed the monks and others were being held hostage by gunmen.[5]

After 39 days, an agreement was reached, according to which the militants turned themselves in to Israel and were exiled to Europe and the Gaza Strip.

On 10 May, the thirteen men left the church, and were taken to Ben Gurion International Airport in an armored bus, where a Royal Air Force transport plane awaited to take them to Cyprus. They were greeted by Sherard Cowper-Coles, the British Ambassador to Israel, thirty members of the Royal Military Police, and a Royal Air Force doctor.[33] They laid down their arms to the IDF behind a curtain, to avoid the photographers. They were denied permission to meet with their families before their exile.[10]

A total of 8 Palestinians had been killed, and an Armenian monk was also wounded.[3] Israeli riot police reported finding 40 explosive devices which had been left in the church by the Palestinians, several of them booby-trapped. In the parking lot beneath the Peace Center, Israeli soldiers had caused heavy damage to dozens of cars. Soldiers also vandalized Arafat's office in the presidential palace in the city.[10]

As for damage to the cultural heritage site, ICOMOS estimated the damage at a total of US$1.4 million, primarily grades 3 and 4, and loss in urban furniture. Direct damage to the church complex from projectiles and fire was estimated to total about US$77,000.[34]
