Chinese gangs are behind THOUSANDS of illegal weed farms across the US - sparking fears that CCP could become new cannabis kingpins
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Chinese gangs have set up thousands of illicit weed farms across the US as they begin to challenge Mexican cartels for supremacy as America's cannabis kingpins.

Authorities in Oklahoma, Oregon, California, New Mexico and Maine have all been battling a surge in Chinese weed farms, with some thought to be linked to criminal gangs known as 'triads'.

The spread is seemingly uncontainable, with police in Penobscot County, Maine, last week arresting three Chinese nationals at a weed farm and seizing 40 pounds of the drug alongside $4,700 in cash. It is thought to be one of around 270 illegal weed farms worth more than $4billion that have sprung up across the state since it legalized the drug in 2020.

Local law enforcement has carried out multiple busts already this year.

Meanwhile, around 2,000 'suspicious' marijuana plants in Oklahoma have been linked to China, accounting for two thirds of weed farms under surveillance, state narcotics police told Politico. Earlier this month, a Chinese ringleader was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting four people at an illegal medical marijuana operation in Oklahoma.

Mexican cartels have long dominated the market for illegal weed in the US, but officials are now warning that Chinese funding for such operations is skyrocketing.

It is not known whether the money is coming from groups connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), but experts have pointed out that triads are usually only allowed to operate if they agree to act as informal 'enforcers' for the government.
It is not known whether the money is coming from groups connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), but experts have pointed out that triads are usually only allowed to operate if they agree to act as informal 'enforcers' for the government.

Last year, a Homeland Security memo leaked to the Daily Caller attributed the growth to Asian Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs), with one official raising the possibility that profits are being funneled back to Beijing.

Chinese immigrant workers have alleged they were lured to northern New Mexico under false pretenses and forced to work 14 hours a day at an illegal marijuana plant backed with funds from a China-based energy giant, according to a lawsuit filed last year. The operation was shut down by police in 2020, but those behind it upped sticks to Oklahoma - taking many of their workers with them - before that farm was also busted in 2022.

The crackdown in Southern and Western states has been put forward as one reason for the explosion in weed farms in Maine.

For several years, Maine residents have spoken out about a surge in marijuana-odor filled homes popping up across the state, including near daycares and schools. The Chinese owners, who speak little to no English, have allegedly earned a notorious reputation throughout Maine for spending thousands on cultivating equipment, namely by demanding items from their phones.

Homes that have been identified as part of the extensive statewide apparatus appear to be found in everyday sleepy suburbs, yet are said to have been plaguing their neighborhoods as a strong marijuana smell emanates even from a distance away and are fitted with extensive electrical upgrades.

Experts estimate that a standard 2,500 square foot home can produce upwards of $3million of marijuana every year.

Some of the profits are allegedly sent directly back to China, while some of the ill-gotten gains remain in the US to keep up criminal activities.

According to an investigation by Maine Wire into 100 of the identified sites, they were all purchased since marijuana was legalized, by single Chinese adults primarily from New York and Massachusetts.
Fascinating.
Although the homes are allegedly filed under the single names, many are tied together by factors such as car registrations - indicating they may be connected and controlled by an umbrella organization.

Neighbors say it has become a near-monthly sight to see a van with New York or Massachusetts plates arrive at the pot-filled homes.

In January, Maine authorities raided an illegal Chinese-run marijuana operation in the aptly-named town of China in Kennebec County.

The Chinese-owned growing plants have emerged at a time when the marijuana industry is skyrocketing in the US, opening up million-dollar revenue streams for many - including the Amish community who were detailed in a DailyMail.com investigation last year.

Nationwide, Homeland Security has reportedly found a total of 749 properties linked to Asian TCOs, indicating Maine has become a particular hotbed for CCP activity.

It comes amid growing frustration at the failure of law enforcement to crack down on the illicit operations, with Homeland Security allegedly pleading with Maine police to help them gather intel on the properties in September.

Many in the legal weed industry say they have been forced to become extremely selective to avoid using the Chinese-grown marijuana, as it is often found to contain harmful chemicals including pesticides. The harmful elements to the product is another example of the struggle law enforcement have had in clamping down on the illegal marijuana grown by illegal immigrants.

'Regardless of where the individuals are from, the true problem involves conflicting state and federal laws,' Morton said. 'We also have little to no oversight, allowing for criminal activity to occur at a high degree.'

#3  The greatest problem with illegal grow sites is the environmental devastation that they leave behind after they have run a grow for a year or more. Watercourse pollution, devastating use of excessive fertilizer and grow products, and violent protections against "patch-pirates" we common in California 30 years ago. I doubt is has gotten better since the days of "CAMP", especially given the ruthless, environmental indifference the Chinese have shown worldwide!

"The environmental impacts of marijuana
cultivation across the state are severe.
The impacts will only continue to get
worse as demand for marijuana increases;
there is little indication that a reduction
or elimination of cultivation could occur.
The devastation caused by illegal grows is
widespread and substantial. The threat of
destruction and contamination of our waterways
and the threat to endangered species of animals
may cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem."

Multiple packets of anticoagulant rodenticides found surrounding an illegal marijuana grow site in Northern California.

U.S. is launching $2 million defense missiles to stop $2,000 Houthi drones, a discrepancy that the Yemeni rebel group has noted in its statements mocking Washington.
[Yahoo] More than two months of direct fighting with the Houthis has heavily taxed the U.S. military, which is spending a significant amount of money to take down cheap drones, launch retaliatory strikes and defend against rebels who are, in turn, shooting down pricey American drones.

In most cases, the U.S. is launching $2 million defense missiles to stop $2,000 Houthi drones, a discrepancy that the Yemeni rebel group has noted in its statements mocking Washington.

The cost of taking on the Houthis is also becoming more apparent as the defiant fighters show no signs of stopping and could lock the U.S. into a long conflict — and it’s throwing the world into a tough spot.

“North Yemen is becoming like North Korea when it comes to firing rockets over the seas,” said Mohammed al-Basha, a Yemen and Middle East expert at Navanti Group. “It’s going to be a long-term issue for not just us, but for the world.”

Since late November, the Houthis have attacked commercial boats and U.S. ships dozens of times, with most of the attacks unsuccessful, as the U.S. shoots down drones or anti-ship cruise missiles on a near-daily basis.

But they successfully hijacked a ship in November, set a ship on fire in January and sunk a British cargo vessel.

To date, the Houthis have hit 15 commercial ships since the fighting between Israel and Hamas began in October, with four of those ships being U.S. vessels, according to Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Pete Nguyen.

The U.S. in December set up a task force called Operation Prosperity Guardian, which involves a coalition of other allied nations, to patrol the waters of the Red Sea and defend commercial shipping against the Houthis. In January, the U.S. began launching strikes on the Houthis with the U.K., and both nations have continued to target the group in Yemen to knock out military capabilities before they can be used in attacks.

The maritime operation is still in effect. Between four and eight coalition ships are in the Red Sea on any given day, according to the Pentagon, but the U.S. is the primary actor taking down Houthi drones and missiles.

While playing defense, the U.S. Navy is likely using Standard Missile-2 surface-to-air missiles, which cost more than $2 million a piece, to take down Houthi attacks. The Navy may also be using Standard SM-6 missiles, which cost more than $4 million each.

The missiles are effective because they can neutralize threats over a larger area, enabling the U.S. to protect commercial ships.

Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the U.S. will continue to safeguard international trade and noted that if the coalition hadn’t taken action, lives would be in danger and assets at risk.

“What would have been the cost of sunken ships, lives lost, environmental disaster, had we not and were we not working with the international community to address this problem?” Ryder asked.

Ryder said for the Houthis, in the long term it is “not to their benefit to continue this.”
Harsh words.
“It’s almost like the Houthis are trying to wreck their own neighborhood,” he said.

Robert Murrett, a retired Navy vice admiral and a former vice director of intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, agreed.

“The cost … is an absolute drop in the bucket compared to the global disruption that’s being visited on the world’s economy by the Houthis,” he said. “My firm advice to all the men or women on these [Navy boats] is use whatever you’ve got. Don’t worry about the cost.”

Still, Murrett, now a professor at Syracuse University, said the U.S. could look at cheaper means of taking down the drones like electronic jamming.

“One of the best ways to deal with a cheap, unmanned aircraft is soft kill, and it has to do with electronic warfare jamming and other devices such as that, which is fairly inexpensive,” he said.

The Houthis are also costing the U.S. elsewhere: taking down two roughly $32 million Reaper drones in November and another in February.

Wes Rumbaugh, a fellow with the missile defense project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said any military engagement is going to cost money and argued you can’t put a dollar value on saving lives.

“The United States Department of Defense is not trying to win an accounting exercise,” he said.

Rumbaugh also said he would place his bets on the U.S. over the Houthis in a protracted economic battle.

“I don’t think the rookies are going to be able to bankrupt the United States,” he said.

But the Houthis have not only stepped up attacks over time, they are also introducing new capabilities into the fight.

Last month, Houthi fighters launched an underwater drone for the first time in the Red Sea combat arena.

And Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said this week that he would soon introduce new “surprises” into the fight after vowing to carry on the battle.

How about building a Drone Spider-web attack by adapting the already in use the computer controlled 1,000 drones shows concept.

Flight times range from 15 to 45 mins and have a 10km to 15km range.

Cost for the whole drone cloud under $2M and estimated drone survival percentages well over 75%+

Good for taunting, but a stupid form of accounting, IMHO. The value of a munition is not what it costs to produce, but what it can destroy. Does it sound silly to spend a few hundred bucks on a bullet-proof vest to protect your life against a $1 round of bullet?

#5  ^ It is a fun game while it lasts, but eventually it becomes annoying and the offending side gets Gaza-fied.

Right now, we see an imbalance because our air defenses were designed to bring down fast movers - airplanes and missiles, both ballistic and cruise. Drones are tiny and slow in comparison and are easier to destroy. As drone warfare continues to grow in popularity, expect to see air defenses evolve to become more closely tailored to the problem.

Britain to bar entry to 'hate preachers' from Pakistan, other Asian countries
*Boggle*
[GEO.TV] The UK government is formulating plans to prohibit the entry of hate preachers holding holy warrior views from countries like Pakistain, Afghanistan, and Indonesia, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The government, expressing concern over a perceived "shocking increase" in holy warrior activity, is actively working to identify the most dangerous bully boyz from abroad, intending to include them on visa warning lists. As per the proposed measures, individuals on these lists would face automatic refusal of entry to the United Kingdom.

This development follows an impassioned speech by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street, where he highlighted the threat posed by bully boyz to the country's democratic and multi-faith values.

Sunak asserted the government's commitment to preventing those aiming to undermine these values from entering the nation, stating, "The Home Secretary has instructed that if those here on visas choose to spew hate on protests or seek to intimidate people, we will remove their right to be here."

In addition to addressing hate preachers, Sunak urged demonstrators protesting the Israel-Hamas
...always the voice of sweet reason...
conflict to ensure their actions are not exploited by holy warriors.

Russian Counterterrorism Operation News Roundup for March 3rd, 2024
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
In Ingushetia, the counter-terrorist operation regime was canceled
[Regnum] The counter-terrorist operation (CTO) regime in the city of Karabulak in Ingushetia has been cancelled, the regional operational headquarters announced on March 3.

The CTO regime was in effect for about 18 hours.

“A decision was made to lift the counter-terrorism operation (CTO) regime, which was in force from 19:30 on March 2, 2024, in part of the territory of the city of Karabulak,” the message said.

As IA Regnum reported, on the evening of March 2, in one of the residential buildings in the city of Karabulak in Ingushetia, security forces discovered a group of bandits who intended to commit terrorist acts. FSB special forces blocked the attackers.

When trying to arrest the bandits, they opened fire on law enforcement officers. Law enforcement officers clashed with them. Residents of neighboring houses were evacuated. The militants tried to escape from the special forces through the window, but they failed. Security forces cleared the apartment.

As a result of the CTO, six bandits were neutralized, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) reported on March 3. The identities of those killed have been previously established; they were adherents of IS (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) and had previously committed crimes, NAC noted.

Weapons, ammunition and improvised explosive devices were found at the scene of the clash. There were no casualties among law enforcement officers during the operation, and no civilians were injured.

A video has emerged of a shootout between FSB officers and IS militants
I do love a happy ending.
Footage of a shootout between special forces of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and IS militants (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) appeared on the Internet during a counter-terrorism operation in the city of Karabulak in Ingushetia. The video was published by the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC).

The footage shows FSB officers firing at terrorists from behind the outbuildings. The militants took up residence in a high-rise building opposite. In response, loud bursts of firearms are heard. After the operation was completed, a close-up was taken of the house where the window and balcony openings on the top floor were completely knocked out. Presumably, they were in this apartment. The glass in several neighboring windows was broken. At the end, the militants' rifles and their magazines are shown.

As reported by Regnum news agency, the introduction of a counter-terrorist operation regime within the boundaries of four streets in the city of Karabulak in Ingushetia became known on March 2. The regional operational headquarters reported that it began at 19:30.

According to NAC, the militants opened fire on the security forces when trying to detain them. Law enforcement officers were forced to engage in clashes with terrorists. Residents of houses adjacent to the area where the criminals settled were evacuated.

In Ingushetia, after the CTO, residents will be compensated for damage to their housing and property
Residents of Ingush Karabulak, whose property and housing were damaged during the counter-terrorism operation (CTO), will receive assistance in an expedited manner. The head of the region, Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov, announced thison his Telegram channel.

“ I think the most important thing is that there are no casualties among law enforcement officers and no casualties among residents. All this is thanks to the competent actions of the FSB special forces. I instructed the regional government to promptly organize work to establish and assess the damage and provide assistance <...> to the residents of the city of Karabulak,” explained the head of the republic.

Denmark, Rwanga Foundation sign contract to facilitate asylum seekers return
[Rudaw] The Danish government and a local NGO in the Kurdistan Region on Monday signed a contract to facilitate the return of asylum seekers whose applications to stay in Denmark have been rejected.

Asylum seekers can register for the $1.5 million project through the Danish government, Iraq’s diplomatic mission in the country, or international organizations.

"So far, it is Denmark, but there are other countries whose names we do not want to disclose yet. But we are close to signing contracts with them as well," Abdulsalam Madani, CEO of Rwanga Foundation, told Rudaw.

"It appears that the project will continue for the next five years. This [Denmark] contract is for three years until 2026," he said.

The returnees will be trained in three stages for a year, with 100 applicants designed to benefit from the rehabilitation project per year.
Three hundred out of tens or hundreds of thousands of migrants? Golly. Arriving wholesale, returning retail.
After the training, half of the applicants could receive financial support ranging from $3,000 to $4,000.

The Danish government will provide financial support.

"Those cases have lost all legal grounds to stay there, and of course they are now looking for an opportunity, and their homeland is the country of their choice," Lanja Shahab, head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Coordination center told Rudaw.

"We hope projects like this will be of help so that when the person returns home, they have support and there is an entity that helps them to earn their living," Shahab added.

Speaking to Rudaw last month, Peter Krogh Sorensen, Regional Migration Attache at the Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration, said that the security situation in Iraq has improved and could be considered safe.

Sorensen was explaining a Danish government program that seeks to support asylum seekers who had their cases rejected by European countries to come back and resettle in their host communities. The program covers the Kurdistan Region’s provinces of Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaimani as well as federal Iraq’s Nineveh, Baghdad, and Anbar and is implemented in cooperation with Rwanga Foundation.

According to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
, the return of asylum seekers must be voluntary and each country has to ensure that their country of origin is safe and secure.

European countries received over 26,000 asylum applications from Iraqis in 2023: Data
[Rudaw] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Agency for Asylum (EUAA) on Wednesday announced in a blurb that European Union member states and associated countries received over a million asylum applications last year, including over 26,000 from Iraqis.
That’s a lot.
The EUAA, an agency of the EU mandated with supporting EU countries in applying EU laws governing asylum, international protection and reception conditions, announced in a blurb on Thursday EU and associated countries received a total of 1.14 million asylum applications, marking a peak in the past seven years. Syrians maintained their position as primary asylum applicants, followed by Afghans, despite there being a significant decrease in asylum applications lodged by Afghans compared to 2022. The agency also noted that there was a rise in applications from Paleostinians towards the end of the year.

Of the 1.14 million asylum applications EU and associated countries received in 2023, slightly over 26,000 were lodged by Iraqis, the majority of which were in Germany. Forty-three percent of Iraq applications (11,280) were lodged in Germany, 24% percent in Greece and lower percentages in the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Finland, La Belle France, Bulgaria, Italia as well as other countries.

The number of Iraqi applications includes those lodged by citizens of the Kurdistan Region.

Around 20,000 people from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region migrated out of the country in 2023, with at least nine of them losing their lives on the dangerous and illegal smuggling routes, a refugee foundation told Rudaw in late December.

Over 760,000 people have migrated from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since 2015, with the lowest number during that period being recorded in 2023 with 19,500 migrants colonists, a representative of Summit (Lutka) Foundation for Refugees and Displaced Affairs told Rudaw in December.

The number of migrants colonists for 2023 is significantly lower than the data for 2022, during which Lutka recorded over 71,000 migrants colonists. The foundation also reported at least nine migrant deaths over the past year, adding that the whereabouts of at least two others remain unknown.

Tens of thousands of people from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region take on perilous routes out of the country towards Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
on a yearly basis in hopes of escaping the endless crises in the country, including the lack of employment, political instability, and corruption.

At least two people, including a 22-year-old Kurdish man from Sulaimani province’s Raparin administration, died when a boat carrying over 60 migrants colonists capsized in the English Channel off the coast of La Belle France in December 2023.

Canada, Italy leaders cancel Toronto event over security concerns amid pro-Palestinian, anti-Trudeau protests
Pre-emptive surrender.
[IsraelTimes] Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
...hereditary prime minister of the Great White North...
and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday canceled a joint visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto for security reasons, according to a Canadian spokesperson.

Two groups of protesters, one against Trudeau’s government and another of pro-Paleostinian protesters, had gathered outside the gallery. There were also numerous police.

Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson for Trudeau’s office, confirmed the event was called off for security reasons but referred questions to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which had no immediate comment.

Meloni is visiting Canada in Italia’s role as president of the Group of Seven nations for 2024 after visiting Washington on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Canada and Italia agreed to enhance cooperation in various areas, including energy security and the shift to a sustainable energy future, over the next three to five years, according to a statement.

Tennessee National Guard deploying to southern border as Biden admin 'fails to act,' GOP gov says
[FoxNews] 50 Tennessee National Guard members initially heading to southern border.

Tennessee is deploying National Guard members to the southern border as Republican governors continue to support Texas in its showdown with the Biden administration over immigration enforcement.

Gov. Bill Lee, who visited the southern border in Eagle Pass, Texas, earlier this month, met with Tennessee National Guard members at Millington Tennessee Army National Guard Armory ahead of their voluntary deployment.

"As America faces the most severe border crisis in decades, TN is showing the rest of the country what it means to lead," the Tennessee governor posted on X. "Today, I joined TN National Guard members who will soon deploy on a voluntary mission to secure the Southern border as the federal government fails to act."

The initial deployment will consist of 50 members and last through March before a second wave replaces them later in the spring. It was unclear where exactly they would be sent.

Iraq to repatriate nearly 600 from Syria ISIS detention camp
[Rudaw] Iraq is set to repatriate around 600 people from northeast Syria’s (Rojava) al-Hol camp that houses tens of thousands of Islamic State

(ISIS) affiliates, an official from Iraq’s ministry of migration and displaced said on Sunday.

"A number of Iraqis in al-Hol camp are scheduled to be returned next week. The returnees will be about 150 families and about 600 people," Ali Abbas, spokesperson for Iraq’s ministry of migration and displaced, told Rudaw.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested thousands of ISIS fighters along with their wives and children when they took control of the group’s last stronghold in Syria in March 2019. Many of these people were taken to al-Hol and Roj camps.

Al-Hol camp is located in northeast Syria’s Hasaka province and houses over 50,000 ISIS-linked people. The camp has infamously been branded a breeding ground for terrorism, with authorities describing it as a "ticking time bomb." The camp residents come from around the world, but the bulk are Syrian and Iraqi.

Iraq has repatriated 1,924 families from al-Hol camp, totaling 7,556 people. Of that number, 1,230 people have returned to their hometowns in Iraq, National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji said at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on Saturday.

’s (ISIS) reign of terror in Shingal (Sinjar) in 2014, returned home to Iraq and was reunited with her family on Saturday, a month after she was rescued during an operation in northeast Syria’s al-Hol camp.

Iraq’s national intelligence service on Saturday said that Kovan Aidi Khourto was repatriated by their forces, following a directive from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.

"The operation was carried out based on accurate intelligence about her whereabouts in Syrian territory, in order to reach her and return her to Iraq and hand her over to her family," said the Iraqi intelligence in a statement.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on February 4 announced that Khourto was liberated in al-Hol camp by the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) - the SDF’s all-female partner force.

The YPJ said that the group handed the Yazidi woman to her family on Saturday.

When ISIS swept through the Yazidi heartland of Shingal in August 2014, committing genocide, the group kidnapped 6,417 women and kiddies who were forced into sexual slavery and labour. Around 2,700 of them are still missing. Many have been rescued from al-Hol, the notorious camp that houses tens of thousands of ISIS families and supporters.

The sprawling camp has been criticized for its poor conditions and insecurity. Many of the residents still hold ISIS ideology and the camp has been dubbed a breeding ground for terrorism.

Kurdish forces have conducted several security operations in the camp.

As Sderot schools open for first time since Oct. 7, ministry says 55-60% of kids in attendance
[IsraelTimes] The education system in Sderot officially returns to operation, with some 100 schools and kindergartens opening across the beleaguered southern city.

Between 55 and 60 percent of K-12 Sderot students have officially returned, an Education Ministry spokesperson tells The Times of Israel.

war, with residents living in hotels or other temporary conditions elsewhere in the country, mostly in Eilat.

Sderot was one of many locations overrun by Hamas on October 7, with bandidos forces of Evil moving through the city on foot and in pickup trucks and slaughtering at least 50 civilians and 20 coppers.

The number of students returning to school and kindergarten in the city "was a surprise, we thought it would be lower," says Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi, speaking at an informal presser outside an elementary school in the city alongside Education Minister Yoav Kisch and other officials.

Because of manpower and staffing issues, reopening the schools in Sderot necessitated closing the temporary education systems set up for evacuated Sderot residents in other areas, the education minister says.

Israel won’t send team to Cairo after Hamas refuses to provide list of living hostages
[IsraelTimes] US, Qatar, Hamas representatives are in Egypt; terror group still said insisting on an Israeli commitment to end the war as a condition for another hostage deal

According to Channel 12, the war cabinet and the professional echelon all agreed that there was no point in sending a delegation to Egypt for ongoing talks given Hamas’s response.

Israel has said that 31 of the 130 hostages held since October 7 are dead. The first phase of the mooted deal is reported to provide for the release of 40 of the living hostages, including women, children, the elderly and the sick, in the course of a six-week truce, and in exchange for some 400 Paleostinian security prisoners. The outline reportedly provides for negotiations on the further phased release of the remaining hostages, living and dead, in return for longer pauses in the fighting and many more Paleostinian prisoner releases.

On Sunday afternoon, a Hamas official told CNN
...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for...
that the group will not agree to a deal without Israel consenting to an end to the war in Gaza, a non-starter for Israel.

Citing "a highly placed source" in the terror group, CNN reported that the two other areas of disagreement holding up a deal are the withdrawal of IDF troops from Gaza, and Gazook civilians being allowed to return to the northern Gaza Strip.

Earlier in the day, a senior Hamas official had claimed that a ceasefire in Gaza could be secured within "24 to 48 hours" if Israel were to accept the terror group’s demands in ongoing talks.

"If Israel agrees to Hamas demands, which include the return of displaced Paleostinians to northern Gaza and increasing humanitarian aid, that would pave the way for an agreement within the next 24 to 48 hours," the unnamed Hamas official told AFP, as a delegation of its officials arrived in Cairo for talks.

The official added that Hamas had demanded the entry of "at least 400 to 500 trucks per day" carrying food, medicine and fuel as part of a truce deal.

The Hamas official’s claim that Israel is the party responsible for delaying the elusive deal contradicted comments by a senior US official, who said on Saturday that Israel had agreed to the framework for a six-week pause in fighting, which now depended on Hamas agreeing to release the hostages.

Despite charging that Israel’s unwillingness to accept the terror group’s demands was the reason a deal hasn’t progressed, a Hamas official told the UK-based Qatari outlet al-Araby al-Jadeed that it will not provide any further details on the hostages without Israel paying a "big price" for it.

"A big price must be paid in terms of alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza and establishing a ceasefire," he told the news outlet, signaling that the group was not prepared to accede to the demand.

The Hamas delegation to Cairo is being led by big shot Khalil al-Haya, an unnamed source told AFP.

"The delegation will meet Egyptian mediators and deliver the group’s response to the new Gay Paree proposal," the source said, in reference to negotiations held last month in the French capital with Israel’s presence.

Also said to be in attendance are delegations from the United States and Qatar.

Hopes of a successful deal as a result of the ongoing negotiations rose last week following a previous round of talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt in Doha, and cautious indications from US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Old, boring, a plagiarist, fond of hair sniffing and grabbing the protruding parts of women, and not whatcha call brilliant... or is that an act?...
that an agreement was close. On Friday, however, Biden acknowledged that a deal remains elusive for now, but said he still hopes it will be finalized by the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, which will start on March 10 or 11, depending on the lunar calendar.

Hamas has not backed away from its position that a temporary truce must be the start of a process towards ending the war altogether, Egyptian sources and a Hamas official said Saturday. Israel has said it will not accept such terms.

Emphasising their earnest efforts, the source stated they are actively working towards an agreement to halt aggression, facilitate aid entry, and ensure the return of displaced people, particularly in the north.

The goal also includes a complete withdrawal of the occupation. The Hamas delegation is in Cairo to meet with Egyptian and Qatar

i counterparts, present the movement's vision.

The source underlined that the occupation delegation's presence in Cairo is not a primary concern. Importantly, specific dates for reaching an agreement have not been officially announced, while the occupation's approach to both field and negotiation battles is characterised by confusion and randomness.

, sources with knowledge of talks said, as pressure mounted for a pause in fighting by Ramadan.

Hamas has not backed away from its position that a temporary truce must be the start of a process towards ending the war altogether, the Egyptian sources and a Hamas official said.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
the Egyptian sources said assurances had been offered to Hamas that the terms of a permanent ceasefire would be worked out in second and third phases of the deal. The duration of the initial pause, a phase expected to last about six weeks, had been agreed upon, the sources said.

Hamas did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the assurances and whether they were sufficient to move forward with the six-week pause.

"When it comes to ending the war and pulling out forces out of Gaza, gaps remain unbridged," a Paleostinian official familiar with mediation efforts said. The official did not immediately confirm the Cairo talks.

A senior US administration official said on Saturday that the framework for a six-week pause was in place, with Israel's agreement, and now depended on Hamas agreeing to release hostages it has held in Gaza since its attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7.

"The path to a ceasefire right now literally at this hour is straightforward. And there's a deal on the table. There's a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it," the official told news hounds. "The onus right now is on Hamas."

For its part, Israel will not take part in more talks until Hamas clarifies the number of hostages slated to go free and how many are still alive, the source briefed on the talks said.

Hamas said this week that in total around 70 captives had been killed due to Israel's military operations.

Israel also wants Hamas to agree to a ratio of Paleostinian prisoners to be released in exchange for each hostage, said the source, who declined to be identified further. "No delegation will be going to Cairo until Hamas provides answers," the source said.

A draft proposal indicated progress on a number of issues and proposed an overall ratio of 10 Paleostinian prisoners held in Israel for each hostage.

Turkey "bears responsibility for the serious abuses and potential war crimes committed by members of its forces and local gangs it supports in Ottoman Turkish-occupied territories of northern Syria," HRW said in the report.

Ankara has carried out successive operations since 2016 to expel Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the backbone of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), from Syria’s north. Its military campaigns are aimed at establishing a "safe zone" - a buffer between the Turkey-Syria border and areas under Kurdish control.

"Kurdish residents have borne the brunt of the abuses due to their perceived ties to Kurdish-led forces that control vast swathes of northeast Syria," HRW said, with Ankara alleging that Kurdish forces in northeast Syria (Rojava) are a front for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a Kurdish group engaged in a decades-long conflict with Turkey.

violations, killings, and abductions as well as forcing the displacement of Kurds from northern Syria.

According to HRW, the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces and intelligence agencies "were involved in carrying out and overseeing abuses."

"Ottoman Turkish officials are not merely bystanders to abuses, but bear responsibility as the occupying power, and in some cases have been directly involved in apparent war crimes," said Adam Coogle, deputy Middle East director at HRW.

Other violations documented by HRW include housing, land, and property rights, and "widespread looting and pillaging as well as property seizures and extortion, and the failure of attempted accountability measures to curb abuses or to provide restitution to victims."

While Kurds have been disproportionately targeted by Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliates, Arabs and others with ties to the SDF have also been affected.

"Kurdish women detainees have reported sexual violence, including rape. Children as young as six months old have been detained alongside their mothers," the report highlights.

The Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), a loose coalition of militias affiliated with Turkey, as well as the military police, "have arbitrarily arrested and detained, forcibly disappeared, tortured and otherwise ill-treated, and subjected to unfair military trials scores of people with impunity," HRW said.

Since 2016, Turkey has carried out three offensives against the YPG in northern Syria, invading key Kurdish-majority towns near the border such as Afrin, Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain), and Gire Spi (Tal Abyad). It has repeatedly threatened to carry out another operation imminently.

A Syrian resident who formerly lived under SNA rule told HRW that "everything is by the power of the weapon."

In 2018, Turkey and its Syrian proxies launched Operation Olive Branch with the aim of capturing Afrin from the YPG.

Local and international rights groups have repeatedly accused pro-Turkey groups of committing human rights abuses against the Kurdish residents of the city since its fall in 2018.

Hundreds of thousands of residents of the Syria-Turkey border strip towns of Sari Kani and Gire Spi have been displaced from their homes, the report said.

"The hardest thing for me was standing in front of my house and not being able to enter it," said a displaced Yazidi man from Sari Kani.

Officials responsible for grave human rights abuses in Ottoman Turkish-controlled territories of northern Syria, some of which hold high-ranking positions within SNA, have yet to be prosecuted, HRW lamented.

The rights group noted two email inquiries about the abuses sent to Ottoman Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in November 2023 and January 2024 have gone unanswered.

"Turkey’s occupation of parts of northern Syria has facilitated a lawless climate of abuse and impunity — it’s the furthest thing possible from a ’safe zone,’" Coogle said.

Al-Rahi: No one should drag our country into useless war
[An Nahar] Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Sunday said "no one should drag our country into war, killing, destruction, displacement and homelessness, for no use and for issues that the Lebanese in general and our people in the Lebanese south have nothing to do with."

Al-Rahi’s remarks, in his Sunday Mass sermon, were an apparent jab at Hezbollah, which had activated Leb

Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...

"Lebanon’s message is to be a land of peace and a pioneer of peace, due to its composition, cultural and religious diversity, history, political system and coexistence pact," the patriarch added.

Al-Rahi also strongly condemned Israel’s "horrible and shameful crimes in the Gazoo

At least 289 people have been killed in Lebanon since the beginning of festivities, mostly Hezbollah fighters and their allies, along with 44 civilians. On the Israeli side, the army says 10 soldiers and six civilians have been killed, while tens of thousands of residents on both sides have been displaced.
