Museveni in surprise visit to Somali capital
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni yesterday made a surprise visit to the Somali capital Mogadishu, becoming the first foreign head of state to set foot there in almost 20 years, officials said.

Mr Museveni spent several hours in Mogadishu, arriving in the morning and leaving in the afternoon, officials with the African Union force AMISOM said.

The veteran Ugandan leader was accompanied by a group of army officers and visited Ugandan troops, who form the bulk of the 7,500-strong peacekeeping force.

Mr Museveni met with Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, new Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and other officials, AMISON officials said.

Somalia is widely seen as one of the world's most dangerous countries and is almost entirely in the hands of Islamist beturbanned goons fighting to overthrow the UN-backed transitional government.

The beturbanned goons also control most of the capital itself.

Arabia
Silent coup underway in Riyadh?
[Iran Press TV] Arab experts have discussed the possibility of a silent coup in Soddy Arabia as the power struggle hikes in the kingdom after ailing King Abdullah's trip to the US.

A seminar recently held in Cairo focused on the political future of Soddy Arabia in the absence of King Abdullah's trip to the US for treatment and the prospects of his possible death.
Silly seminarians! King Abdullah's death is as certain as taxes. Even the prophet Mohammed died in the end. Given that the heir was named quite some time ago, I don't see what the fuss is about, unless the future bereaved are trying to optimize the timing to practice their wailing -- one doesn't want to peak too soon, leaving the throat too sore to utter a peep when the time finally comes. It would shame the king's memory were he not properly bewailed... and shamed Saudi princes have a nasty habit of spreading the pain.
The meeting, "The Future of Political Conflict among the Heirs in Soddy Arabia," attended by Arab experts and politicians, including Saudi academics and Egypt's al-Azhar scholars concluded that there was a fight over the throne among Al Saud heirs.
As is traditional, no matter how carefully the recently deceased might have tried to arrange things.
The conflict they said was being covertly fueled and steered by the US and Israel who see the oil-rich Arab kingdom an issue of mutual concern and consider it to be the primary strategic ally in the Middle East against the forces of resistance.
OMG!! Imperial Colonialists (or is it Colonial Imperialists? I do so confuse the two) plus Elders of Zion?!? Those poor jumped up Bedouins haven't got a hope in hell of pulling off whatever their dying kinglet intended.
The experts noted that documents and information available indicate that the conflict is going in two directions: First among the sons of King Abdul Aziz and the second among his grandchildren.

In the first group are the remainder of the Al Sudairy Clan -- seven sons of King Ibn Saud and Princess Hassa bint Ahmad Al Sudairy -- most notably Defense Minister Prince Sultan, Riyadh's Governor Prince Salman and Interior Minister Prince Nayef, who is largely backed by hardline Wahhabis.
We don't like whichever of those was funding Al Qaeda and other jihadi groups. Also whichever has been funding propagating Wahhabi ideas in Western mosques. One hopes there will be somebody left after sorting out the first two groups. One is not, however, sanguine.
The second the experts said is among the grandchildren of Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, and most notably Khaled bin Sultan, who effectively runs the defense ministry and Mutaib bin Abdullah who is in charge of the Saudi National Guard.

Among the second group is Bandar bin Sultan, widely seen as closely tied with US intelligence services and his return to the kingdom after a one-year absence is not deemed much of a coincidence.
Which one was it who tried to hand a check to New York City Mayor Guilliani after 9/11?
Given the old age and diminishing health of King Abdullah and his brothers, the conflict between Bandar and Mutaib is the only serious power struggle which might amount to war, the meeting concluded. They noted that Washington is seeking to arrange a peaceful power transition, although Bandar's rule would better serve its interests.

The participants in the seminar cautioned against changes in the Saudi government that might further reinforce Wahhabi Orcs and similar vermin in the kingdom, bring closer cooperation between Riyadh and Washington and even lead to normalization of ties Tel Aviv.
Normalization with the Juicees? Heaven forfend!
They also demanded the independence of the holy Mohammedan sites from the dominance of the Al Saud royal family and Wahhabis, and called for the supervision of independent Mohammedan nations and scholars instead.
Brilliant idea, that. Then the various Muslim sects can squabble at their holiest places like the Christians do in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where an outsider must hold the key to the front door.

#2  Technically speaking, big Mo' didn't die. Instead he created an ecumenical problem by riding his horse to heaven, which means that there is at least one animal in heaven, much to the consternation of those that seek to assert that all religions are basically the same.

Yeah, it's your basic, "How many angels can polka on the head of a pin"- type deal.

Moses just died on a mountain overlooking Canaan and died there. But Elijah went up to heaven in a fiery chariot, which is why he's around to escort the Messiah when the time comes, Anonymoose, and Jesus went up to heaven after three days in the tomb, so Mohammed's horse wasn't even the first one, unless that chariot was really the first Ford...

Former ambassador: Other six ETA members work for Chavez's government
[El Universal] Diego Arria, a former minister of Information and Tourism and former Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society, said on Monday in Madrid that in addition to Arturo Cubillas, other six ETA members who were deported to Venezuela in 1989 work in the government led by Hugo Chavez.

Arria testified before the Spanish National Court Judge Eloy Velasco, who is investigating the alleged links between Basque terrorist group ETA and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and their presence in Venezuela.

The former chairman of the UN Security Council conceded that he did not provide new information on the investigation. However,
The infamous However...
he reported the "State policy of pillage" implemented by the Chavez's government whose main victims are from Spain, Efe reported.

Arria, who testified for over an hour before the Spanish National Court Judge Eloy Velasco, admitted that he does not know Arturo Cubillas, who has been considered the "liaison" between Basque separatist group ETA and Colombia's FARC. The former minister added that he did not provide any information about ETA relations with the FARC.

China would accept unified Korea?
[Straits Times] CHINA, long viewed as North Korea's protector, increasingly doubts its own influence and would support the peninsula's reunification if the regime collapses, leaked US documents said Monday.

Over an expansive dinner last year, the Chinese ambassador to Kazakhstan revealed that Beijing considers North Korea's nuclear program to be 'very troublesome,' according to a memo obtained by whistle-blower site WikiLeaks.

Ambassador Cheng Guoping 'said China hopes for peaceful reunification in the long-term, but he expects the two countries to remain separate in the short-term,' said the leaked cable by US Ambassador Richard Hoagland and reprinted by Britain's The Guardian newspaper.

In another cable reproduced by The New York Times, a Chinese official whose name was removed said that Beijing believed North Korea had 'gone too far' after carrying out its second nuclear test and firing a missile.

The official told a US diplomat 'that Chinese officials had expressed Chinese displeasure to North Korean counterparts and had pressed (North Korea) to return to the negotiation table,' it said.

'Unfortunately,' the Chinese official was quoted as saying, 'those protests had had no effect'. 'The only country that can make progress with the North Koreans is the United States,' the Chinese official was quoted as saying.

#1  IMO this proactive view by China will depend on how things are in outcome vee OKINAWA + TAIWAN + VIETNAM = CHIN'S DESIRE FOR "WARM-WATER PORTS".

As QUEEN VICTORIA would say, Beijing thus far is "NOT AMUSED" at INDIA + RUSSIA + JAPAN + USA being allowed to set up in EVERYBODY-BUT-CHINA'S-NEW-BFF VIETNAM [Gulf of Tonkin/Sea of Vietnam = SOUTH CHINA SEAS].

And CHIN must know that RUSSIA'S PROPOSED NEW SUB, MILBASES in FORMER JAPANESE KURILS WORKS ASMUCH TO ISOLATE + MIL DETER CHINA FROM NORPAC + ARCTIC + RUSS FAR EAST AS IT DOES SCARING THE BEJESUS + P **** OFF JAPAN UNTO DEV NUCLEAR ARMS.

Posted by: magpie || 11/30/2010 15:05 Comments || Top||

#5  Actually it probably won't work that way. I suspect China and South Korea get the brunt of dealing with the collapse of North Korea. Taiwan will probably shift more towards China though, but not as part of any deal, but because they see that the US is a bit fickle when it comes to defending others these days.

Italy extradites French jihadi
A French jihadi who had been arrested in southern Italy after returning from terror militant camps on the Af-Pak border was extradited to France on Monday.

Ryad Hannouni, who was born in the suburbs of Paris, was arrested in Naples in September following intelligence that European-born terrorists extremists were returning from the war zone to plan attacks back in Europe.

He appeared before a French magistrate on Monday afternoon for questioning after being flown back to Charles-de-Gaulle airport and handed over to police there.

Interesting word that, retaliation:
To return like for like, especially evil for evil.
To pay back (an injury) in kind.

However, more to the point, her statement smacks of Judeo/Christophobia, which like its counter party Islamophobia, is surely a "hate-crime"

India-Pakistan
Nawaz dangerous, not trustworthy: Abu Dhabi crown prince
[Pak Daily Times] According to the New York Times coverage of the WikiLeaks release of US embassy cables, in July 2009, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Zayed, deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces and de facto defence chief, said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Müslim League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
was "dangerous but not dirty -- this is Pakistain".
"Not dirty" being a relative thing...
He said Sharif could not be trusted to honour his promises. He had also said that President Asif Ali President Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who showed remarkably little curiosity about who actually done her in ...
was "dirty but not dangerous".
"Not dangerous" being equally relative and presumably disregarding the danger inherent in ineptitude...
The NYT also reported that according to other cables released, a rail link between Iran and Pakistain would be delayed for the foreseeable future because of unrest from Baloch bully boyz in both countries. "The current rail connection, running between Quetta, Pakistain and Zahedan, Iran is in poor condition and has low freight-carrying capacity. Moreover, according to reports it has recently been repeatedly subject to rocket attacks and other disruption by Balochi tribes," it added.
That'd be the Sand People. Y'gotta watch out for them. They're both dirty and dangerous.
According to another cable, a natural gas pipeline agreement between Iran and Pakistain, signed with great fanfare earlier this year, is unlikely to bear fruit anytime soon because "the Paks don't have the money to pay for either the pipeline, or the gas".
Likely they're expecting to borrow the money and then have the debt forgiven...
Another said that India was deliberately kept out of the Turkey-sponsored meeting on Afghanistan earlier this year to address the "sensitivities" of Pakistain. Reflecting Islamabad's insistence at every international fora that New Delhi be kept out of any meeting on Afghanistan, a top Turkish diplomat told US officials earlier this year that India was kept out to address Pakistain's concerns, WikiLeaks said.

Pakistani tribesman to sue CIA over drone strike deaths
[Pak Daily Times] A Pak primitive is to sue the CIA for $500 million after his son and brother were killed in covert the drone war against al Qaeda, his lawyer said on Monday.

Karim Khan from North Wazoo, the district on the Afghan border where the US campaign has stepped up in recent months, claimed his house had been hit by US missiles on December 31, 2009.

"That dronezap killed my son, my brother and a local man. We are not terrorists, we are common citizens," he told a news conference where he and his lawyer Mirza Shehzad Akbar announced his plan to sue.

Akbar said he will file a lawsuit in Pakistain and, if necessary, at the International Court of Justice based in The Hague.

John Kerry: Give Away Everything For Nothing
Is there a more pompous tool outside Biden-stupidity-range?
On a February trip to the Middle East, Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman John I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
... the Senate's current foreign policy expert, filling the empty wingtips of Joe Biden...
(D-MA) told Qatari leaders that the Golan Heights should be returned to Syria, that a Paleostinian capital should be established in East Jerusalem as part of the Arab-Israeli grinding of the peace processor, and that he was "shocked" by what he saw on a visit to Gazoo.
I bet they "really liked him" after that capitulation of Israeli sovereignty
Kerry discussed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in a visit to Qatar during separate meetings with Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani and the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa, as revealed by the disclosure of diplomatic cables by the website WikiLeaks.
so, some immeasurable good came of it. Senator Defeat was exposed. Horse-faced POS
The emir told Kerry to focus on Syria as the path toward resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Kerry agreed with the emir that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a man who wants change but pointed out that his arming of Hezbollah and interference in Lebanese politics were unhelpful. Kerry said that Assad "needs to make a bolder move and take risks" for peace, and that he should be "more statesman-like." Kerry also agreed with the emir that the Golan Heights should be given back to Syria at some point.
"needs to make a bolder move and take risks" for peace - like "build a covert Nuke plant with North Korean aid"? You doofus
"The Chairman added that Netanyahu also needs to compromise and work the return of the Golan Heights into a formula for peace," the diplomatic cable reported.
Is it possible to have a negative approval rating - below Kelvin scale? Kerry merits it

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Paris: Indictment will be Issued Even if Hizbullah Seeks to Topple Government
[An Nahar] A high-ranking French official said the international tribunal will issue its indictment in ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's liquidation case even if Hizbullah tried to topple the Lebanese government.

"No matter what Hizbullah does to obstruct the government or even topple it ... the indictment will be issued," the source told pan-Arab daily al-Hayat in remarks published Monday.

"Even if Leb stops to finance the court, there are enough funds to issue the indictment," the source said.

The official confirmed that French President Nicolas Sarkozy was working with all Arab officials involved with the situation in Leb to avert a deteriorating situation in the country.

Premier Saad Hariri's visit to Gay Paree this week comes as part of Sarkozy's support for the Lebanese government, the source told al-Hayat. He added that Syria's hereditary President Bashar Pencilneck Assad's
... who used to be referred to in the Egyptian press as the boy president ...
expected visit to the French capital in the next few days was also aimed at continuing French-Syrian dialogue over Leb.

Asked about a possible Syrian rejection of the tribunal's indictment, the source said: "The court is independent and no one can stop its work ... All of us, including Syria, should calm the situation."

"We hope that Leb's political life does not become the victim of an indictment which no one knows when will be issued or whom it will accuse," the official added.

Roknabadi: STL an Israeli Plot to Sow Discord, Prepare Ground for Israeli Attack
[An Nahar] Iranian Ambassador to Leb Ghazanfar Roknabadi has noted that Premier Saad Hariri's visit to Tehran "comes amid very critical situations in the region and bears great importance in terms of timing -- after (Iran's diminutive President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad's visit to Leb."

In an interview with Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam television, Roknabadi warned that "Israel and its allies don't want the welfare of Iran or Leb."

"They are trying to incite discord and unrest in the region, especially in Leb, and they don't want the scene of calm and stability to prevail in the region," the Iranian diplomat added.

"The Special Tribunal for Leb and the so-called indictment it will issue are a conspiracy and an Israeli plot to sow discord and divisions to prepare the ground for an aggression" on Leb, Roknabadi warned.

As he noted that the "wisdom of Lebanese leaders and people is capable of preventing any party from influencing the Lebanese arena," the Iranian ambassador said that "Tehran's policy is based on unifying all Lebanese parties and supporting any effort in this regard, especially the Syrian-Saudi bid."

Kataeb: Justice is Non-Negotiable, Neither before Nor after Indictment
[An Nahar] The Phalange Party
The Kataeb (Phalange) party was founded by Pierre Gemayel in 1936, who modeled the party after Spanish and Italian Fascist parties he had observed as an Olympic athlete during the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, then Nazi Germany. The movement's uniforms originally included brown shirts and members used the Nazi salute. Despite the party's uniform, its strong sense of nationalism and dedication to a single charismatic leader, the Lebanese Kataeb was not and never became a fascist party nor did it espouse a totalitarian ideology.
on Monday called on officials and political forces in Leb to shoulder their national responsibilities "in tackling the impending critical challenges, especially the issue of justice and the Special Tribunal for Leb."

In a statement issued after the weekly meeting of its political bureau, the party stressed that "justice, unlike politics, is non-negotiable, neither before nor after the issuance of the (STL) indictment."

On Sunday Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called on the Lebanese to unite and "protect the country" ahead of the indictment.

"What we fear, in light of the Israeli-American plot, is that if we wait until the indictment is issued to begin to close ranks and unite ... it will be too late," Nasrallah cautioned.

Kataeb stressed that "the blunt threats being launched nowadays do not scare us, because with all our determination to avert civil strife ... the Lebanese are determined to defend their rights, existence, freedoms and security."

"They also put their confidence in the Army Command's pledge about its preparedness and readiness to counter any tampering with the country's security," the statement went on to say.

Jumblat Wants Settlement before Indictment
Druze leader Walid Wally Jumblat
... who's been on every side in Leb at least four times...
said he wants a settlement to the Special Tribunal for Leb before an indictment is issued.

He told As-Safir newspaper in remarks published Monday that he supports Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's comments which stated that a solution is necessary before the STL issues an indictment in the 2005 liquidation of ex-PM Rafik Hariri.
Nasrallah's comments were made during a graduation ceremony on Sunday.

Jumblat believed Nasrallah's speech underlined the importance of the Syrian-Saudi initiative, adding that "information about the presence of great hope to achieve positive results are accurate."

Later on Tuesday, Jumblat stated that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent visit to Leb raised the issue of the Paleostinian cause and "affirmed that it is the central issue" in the region.

"The Turkish position is aimed at extracting Leb from sectarian rhetoric and restore its historic position towards the main conflict in the region, which is the Paleostinian cause and the Arab-Israeli conflict," he said in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine.

Khamenei Urges Hariri to 'Consolidate Ties with Nasrallah'
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Monday that the premier should "consolidate relations" with Hizbullah.

The website of Khamenei's office said he was pleased that Hariri and Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah currently had good ties, adding "these relations must be more consolidated."

"As long as the occupying Zionist regime exists, Leb needs resistance," Khamenei said in reference to Israel.

"The only element of deterrence against the occupying Zionist regime is the element of resistance," he was quoted as saying.

Hariri was on the third and final day of an official visit to Iran.

He had been told on Sunday by Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi that Tehran was prepared to help the Lebanese army.

Khamenei echoed comments made by President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad, in a meeting with Hariri, during which the Iranian leader called for the Beirut government and Hizbullah to work together against Israel.

"If the government and the resistance form part of the same front, this country will follow the path of greatness and development, and the Zionist regime will not be able to do it the least harm," he said.

Hariri later held a joint presser with first Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi.

The premier stressed that it was the duty of the Lebanese to preserve Leb's stability. "The assistance of friends is an added value," he said.

He also hailed Saudi-Syrian efforts to avert an explosive situation in Leb.

Hariri said national unity preserved the army-people-resistance equation which is adopted by the Lebanese government.

Turning to Iran's controversial nuclear program, the premier said Leb will not be part of any international group that aims to pressure Tehran. Leb supports Iran's right to have nuclear power for peaceful purposes, he told news hounds.

On the other hand, Hariri's visit resulted in the signing of nine memoranda of understanding between Leb and Iran in the social and educational sectors.

In a final statement issued as Hariri wrapped up his 3-day visit, the two countries stressed their determination to consolidate bilateral ties "between the two states as well as between their institutions."

"The two sides express their support for the achievement of justice and finding the truth in the liquidation of martyr Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his lover companions," said the statement.

They stressed that the Special Tribunal for Leb should not be "politically exploited."

Leb and Iran, adds the statement, agreed to form a higher joint committee under the presidency of Iran's first vice-president and Leb's prime minister.

Also according to the statement, Iran voiced support for "national unity and stability in Leb," underlining the importance of "the equation of coexistence as a model for consensual democracy in the country."

Tehran also expressed its "full support to the Lebanese state and the Lebanese people and the national and Islamic resistance in Leb against the Zionist enemy," stressing the need that Israel withdraw its troops from Leb's occupied territories.

For its part, the Lebanese side voiced support for "the right of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran to the peaceful use of nuclear technology."

In the evening, Hariri left Tehran for Gay Paree, where he is scheduled to meet with France's President Nicolas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
