Revelation 13: The Beast out of the Sea

And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?”...
And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men. Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name...His number is 666.

Berlusconi doubts claims about death of Gaddafi's son
Silvio Berlusconi has dismissed reports that Muammar Gaddafi's son and three grandchildren were killed in a NATO air strike on April 30, saying that coalition forces believe the claim to be "propaganda."

Berlusconi told a late-night television talk show that based on intelligence reports, Seif al-Arab Gaddafi was not in Libya and is in fact in another country. He did not elaborate.

Berlusconi told state-run RAI, "It doesn't check out with the coalition. It seems like it's propaganda, and that the youngest son of Gaddafi isn't in Libya but lives in another country. Even the case of the three grandchildren seems unfounded. This is the information from our services."

Battered Libya sues for peace
The Libyan regime is preparing to make a fresh overture to the international community, offering concessions designed to end the bloodshed of the three-month-long civil war.

The Independent has obtained a copy of a letter from the country's Prime Minister, Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, being sent to a number of foreign governments. It proposes an immediate ceasefire to be monitored by the United Nations and the African Union, unconditional talks with the opposition, amnesty for both sides in the conflict, and the drafting of a new constitution.

David Cameron and Barack Obama met yesterday to try to find an exit strategy from a conflict increasingly appearing to have no definitive military solution in sight. The US President acknowledged that the allies now seem to face a long, attritional campaign.

#1  Argh. Look, you don't fight an attritional campaign in which your side doesn't, y'know, attrit. Do they bother to teach basic strategic concepts to journalists or diplomats anymore? I'd describe the current campaign as a basic raiding campaign. You operate from an inaccessible base, chase the enemy into his strongholds, and burn his shit down. Rinse, repeat, until he agrees to give in or his people knife him & replace him with someone who'll give you what you want. This is, in point of fact, the preferred Arab strategy, historically speaking.

Saudi's will loan/give $4B to Egypt
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has pledged $4 billion in aid to Egypt, the chief of Egypt's ruling military council said Saturday. The aid will be in the form of soft loans, deposits and grants, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of the council, was quoted by Egypt's MENA news agency as saying. The agency did not provide a time frame or other details.

The Saudi Press Agency said Tantawi called Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Saturday and thanked him for providing the financial assistance to his cash-strapped country.
Egypt probably needs about $20B/yr in aid unless their tourism biz comes back, they can somehow get foreign investors interested again, get more $$ out of Egyptians working overseas and get a drop in the price of wheat - even in a optimistic scenario, they will be in major trouble for years.
Too bad the Egyptians never figured out how to build a successful state. It would come in handy right now.

#5  What the House of Saud is doing is guaranteeing those 10 Egyptian divisions will be available in case the Iranians try to take Saudi Arabia.

Then Egypt won't want to go to war with Israel in the meantime. It wouldn't do for the Egyptian divisions to be trounced thoroughly by the Israelis just before going off to face the Medes and the Persians... Or worse, have to break off being trounced to turn and face the other way when the loans are called. It does dreadful things to both troop and M&P army morale, it does.

The issue is ensuring that the Egyptian divisions don't get bought-off by the Medes and the Persians. If they get trounced by the Israelis, well, they'll take pressure off Hesb'allah and Hamas and they be won't be around help the Saudis face the Persians.

It'll be considered money well spent in any case.

US offers $5 million for information about Doku Umarov
The US announced that it has offering $5 million for information on the whereabouts of Russia's most wanted terrorist, Doku Umarov.

"The United States is announcing today that it has included Doku Umarov in its Rewards for Justice program, offering a reward of up to $5 million for information that leads to the location of this key terrorist leader," said a joint statement of the presidents of the United States and Russia on cooperation in counterterrorism.

"The action taken today against Umarov supports the U.S. effort to degrade Umarov's ability to exert operational and leadership control over Caucasus Emirates. We are determined to eliminate the group's ability to direct violent attacks and to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat Umarov's network."

Rand Paul holds up Patriot Act renewal over gun provisions
Posted by: ryuge || 05/26/2011 10:03 || Comments || Link || [1 views] Top|| File under:

#1  I fully back Rand Paul on this, using this logic.

1) Large parts of the Patriot Act are used exclusively for non-terrorism related activities, many of which are not even criminal activities, but gratuitously abuse our natural rights. If it is so vital for the police to violate our 4th amendment rights, for example, it should be done for honest reasons, not by deception or judicial fiat.

2) Other parts, while intended for, and correctly applied against terrorists and their activities, are both very expensive and have achieved *zero* results, nor do they show any prospect of achieving *any* results in the future.

3) Both circumstances and technologies have changed since the original bill, so it actually needs *additions* to keep it working. And since there is no post-911 crisis on our hands, it can be done in an orderly manner.

4) Since the problems inherent in the Patriot Act are so substantial, it *must* be open for revision, or it actually becomes a *barrier* to better security. For these reasons, unless it can be revised, it should be discarded and the process begun anew.

"Bad law can be worse than no law."

#2  I hope that Paul stands tougher than the Texas Seanate did.

The Patriot Act and TSA have descended into the makings of a police state where the rule of law no longer applies to the rulers and the Constitution does nothing for individuals. See also Indiana.
Posted by: AlanC || 05/26/2011 15:52 Comments || Top||

#3  Things may be worse than believed. Senator Wyden, on the Intelligence Committee, says that there are *two* Patriot Acts, the public one, and a secret, government only interpretation of the Act that is far more broad.

“We’re getting to a gap between what the public thinks the law says and what the American government secretly thinks the law says.”
Posted by: Anonymoose || 05/26/2011 19:19 Comments || Top||

#4  The Patriot Act should not be renewed. Its a tarball of bad policy and kingdom building that was rammed through during the scary days after 9/11. The only thing worth saving is the elimination of the "wall" between the FBI and CIA and that can be handled with a different law.

India-Pakistan
Muslim Khan's brutal turn
After years in Boston, Pakistani rose to prominence in Taliban

SWAT VALLEY, Pakistan -- He lived the anonymous life of an illegal immigrant in Boston, sharing a Brighton three-decker with his countrymen from Pakistan. He painted homes in the morning and pumped gas in the afternoon. He earned a reputation for being reliable, industrious, and polite.

But after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Muslim Khan returned home and traded in that invisible existence for a certain kind of fame.

With a mastery of English learned in Boston, a festering rage against perceived injustice, and thousands of dollars saved from years abroad, Khan helped bankroll militants' brutal takeover of his home area of Swat Valley. He helped orchestrate some of the Pakistani Taliban's most vicious attacks and became a top spokesman for the insur gent movement.

Two years ago, Pakistan's military -- under heavy pressure from the United States -- took back the valley, scoring its most important victory in its war against extremists and putting Kahn, now 60, out of action and into custody. But fear of a Taliban return still grips this place. And disbelief still grips the Swati community in Boston, which is trying to come to terms with what Khan did.

"He was just a regular guy, working 24/7,'' recalled Mohammad Khan, who owns a pizza parlor in Newton. "He slept here and he ate here and he made money here. How could he go back and say America is no good?''
Much more at the link about a local boy gone bad. But not because of the time he spent in America, which just enabled him to act on ideas he'd had before he left.

Mumbai attacks were 'brilliantly' executed, says accused
A Chicago businessman accused in the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks told the U.S. government's star witness -- an admitted American terrorist -- that the rampage that killed more than 160 people was orchestrated "brilliantly," according to testimony on Wednesday.

David Coleman Headley
aka Syed Daood Gilani
returned to the stand for third day in the trial of his longtime friend Tahawwur Rana, who is accused of providing cover for Headley as he conducted surveillance for the attacks where gunmen arrived by boat and stormed the city for three days.

"'Tactically, this was done brilliantly'," Rana said, according to Headley's testimony.

Headley, a Pakistani-American who pleaded guilty in plotting the attacks, is the government's top witness in a trial that comes at a fragile time in U.S.-Pakistan relations. So far, Headley's testimony has detailed how a Pakistani militant group blamed in the attacks and Pakistani intelligence coordinated in plotting and funding the attacks. The proceedings also come just weeks after Navy SEALs found Osama bin Laden hiding outside Islamabad, raising concerns that Pakistan may have been protecting the world's most wanted terrorist.

US to withdraw troops from Pakistan
The US military has announced the withdrawal of a number of its troops from Pakistan.

The Pentagon said it had received a request from the Pakistani government to reduce its presence in the country.

The request came after a raid by US special forces killed al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in early May.

The US has more than 200 troops in Pakistan helping to train the army. But there are said to be intelligence and special forces operating there.

A spokesman at the Pentagon said that within the last two weeks Pakistan had asked the American military to reduce its footprint, and the Americans were doing so, pulling out some troops. The numbers are quite small.

Govt decides to crush terrorists with full force
[Pak Daily Times] The Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) that met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani at the Prime Minister's House Wednesday evening resolved to crush bully boyz with full might and vigour.
That's nice. What do those who would do the crushing think about that?
The meeting was attended by federal ministers, JCSC chairman, services chiefs and ISI director general.

The DCC reviewed the security situation arising out of terrorist attacks and issues relating to regional security and stability. The chief of naval staff and secretaries of defence, interior and foreign affairs briefed the DCC on the terrorist attack on PNS Mehran, internal security and regional situation.

After in-depth discussions, it was decided that, coordinated efforts will be made to prevent and pre-empt acts of terrorism. It was decided that security, defence and law enforcement agencies would be authorised to use all means necessary to eliminate bad boys.

It was concurred that all citizens should extend their full cooperation to the security, law enforcement agencies and defence forces to eliminate the menace of terrorism.

Participants of the meeting were unanimous in their view that national security was the foremost priority and all arms of the government would ensure that terrorists' hideouts were destroyed by using all appropriate means.

The national consensus on eliminating terrorism will be implemented through a well coordinated and comprehensive strategy with the full support of the people and state institutions at all levels.

The DCC expressed full confidence in the ability and the capacity of the armed forces and law enforcement and intelligence agencies in meeting all threats posed to the national security.

Addressing the DCC meeting, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said, "The fast changing national security paradigm has compelled us to meet twice within a month. We are here to take a holistic review of the impending threats to our national security with a view to find answers, to put an end to the concerns being expressed regarding state of security of the country." He said that in the wake of terrorist attack on PNS Mehran serious concerns were being expressed about the government's ability to deal with the gravity of problems posed due to terrorism. "These concerns need to be clearly addressed and all efforts should be made to reinforce our capacity to effectively eliminate terrorism," the prime minister added.

"I have personally visited PNS Mehran. The purpose was not only to get an in-depth briefing on the terrorist attack but also to express my heartfelt condolences for all those brave men who bit the dust as well as to ascertain well-being of those injured in the attack," he elaborated.

Gilani added, "Concerns have also been expressed about the safety and security of our strategy assets. Any speculation in this regard is unwarranted. Under the National Command Authority, we have an effective command and control system for ensuring the safety and security of our nuclear weapons and related systems."

Anti-Americanism rife in Pakistani military
Anti-Americanism is almost as much fun as antisemitism, and just as useful in explaining why your country is falling to pieces around you.[
Arab News] Officers received training biased against the United States at a prestigious Pakistain Army institution, according to WikiLeaks, underscoring concern that anti-Americanism in the country's powerful military is growing amid strains with Washington.

A US diplomatic cable said the former US ambassador to Pakistain, Anne Patterson, found officers at the National Defense University (NDU) were "naive and biased" against the United States, a key ally which gives Pakistain billions of dollars of aid to help fight bully boys.

Fears the military could be harboring bully boy sympathizers have grown since US forces killed the late Osama bin Laden
... who used to be but now ain't...
this month in a Pak garrison town, where the Al-Qaeda leader had probably lived for several years.

Pakistain's military also controls the country's nuclear arms, and a series of attacks against military installations has heightened fears about the safety of those weapons.

"The elite of this crop of colonels and brigadiers are receiving biased NDU training with no chance to hear alternative views of the US," the WikiLeaks cable, which was published in the Dawn newspaper, quoted Patterson as saying.

"Given the bias of the instructors, we also believe it would be beneficial to initiate an exchange program for instructors."

Some of the officers believed the CIA was in charge of the US media, the report said.

Anti-Americanism runs high among Paks but it has deepened after Bin Laden's killing in a US raid which many Paks see as breach of illusory sovereignty.

Patterson said the United States must target a "lost generation" of military officers who missed training programs in the United States after Washington imposed sanctions against Pakistain in the 1990s for its nuclear program.

The cables also documented the account of a US army officer, Col. Michael Schleicher, who attended a course at NDU and corroborated the views expressed by Patterson.

"The senior level instructors had misperception about US policies and culture and infused the lectures with these suspicions, while the students share these misconceptions with their superiors despite having children who attended universities in the US or London," the cables quoted Schleicher as saying.

Hamayoun Khan, a teacher at NDU, however denied that anti-Americanism was being taught at the university. "I haven't seen bias which she has mentioned here," he said.

Iraq
US should have a military presence in Iraq - Gates
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Defense Secretary Robert Gates believes that the U.S.
should have a military presence in Iraq, after the proposed withdrawal at the end of this year, as part of a balance to match the Iranian influence in the region, as stated by Voice of America Radio today.

"The Iraqi military knows they will need U.S. assistance following this year, particularly in the air defence, intelligence information and logistic operations," he added.

"The U.S. military presence is undesirable, which complicates the will of the Iraqi leaders to ask for the troops to stay. I hope they will reach a certain way to ask for further stay, then the United States will be ready to say Yes," Gates continued.

He pointed out that the United States should support the democracy in Iraq and its progress, which was achieved by American funds and souls.

On the strategic importance of U.S. forces' stay in Iraq, he added "this will give a strong sign to the area that we are not leaving, and will continue our role, which will pacify the Gulf countries, but not Iran, so there is a reciprocal interest for both Iraq and America to continue this relationship".

These comments were made after his speech on U.S. global priorities, held in Washington.

US forces' stay needs new agreement
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Legal expert Tariq Harb said tody that the stay of U.S.
forces needs a new agreement to be submitted by the government to the parliament for voting.
What would we do without legal experts?
Harb pointed out to Aswat al-Iraq that "if there is an intention for further stay of US forces beyond 2011, this will need to sign a new agreement between Iraqi premier and U.S. president, or who to be deputized, with the same formalities of the previous agreement signed in December 2008".

He added that this agreement should pass in the voting , similar to Law 51 of 2008.

"The new agreement should mention some of the basic matters that might differ from the previous agreement as the duties, numbers, and privileges of these forces, as well the termination period, because the timing of the previous agreement is different from time being", he added.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Egypt to lift restrictions on Gaza border crossing
CAIRO -- Egypt will open the Rafah border crossing on a daily basis starting this weekend in a bid to ease the blockade on the Gaza Strip, the official MENA news agency reported on Wednesday.
Shares in the Paleo tunnel industry plummeted...
Hamas income as well. They controlled who could dig, and got a cut of each shipment.
Palestinians will now be able to travel through Rafah -- Gaza's only crossing that bypasses Israel--under entry rules in place before the blockade was tightened in 2007.

Egyptian authorities will now open the border from "9:00 am to 5:00 pm on a daily basis, except for Fridays and public holidays" starting on Saturday, MENA said.

"Palestinian women of all ages will be exempted from visas as will men under 18 or over 40," it said. The exemption also applies to Palestinians entering Egypt for study as long as they have proof of affiliation to an Egyptian university.

"The opening of the crossing comes as part of Egyptian efforts to end the state of Palestinian division and achieve national reconciliation," the news agency reported.
Translation: "We have no problems with Hamas, and are thrilled with the opportunity to stick it to Israel and those dirty Joooos! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!"
Although Egypt had been gradually easing restrictions on the Gaza border -- it had been operating five days a week -- Palestinians needed to coordinate with security authorities before entering Egypt or had to show humanitarian need.

The move is likely to rattle Israel which said earlier this month it was "worried" by Egypt's plans to reopen the crossing. Israeli deputy prime minister Silvan Shalom claimed the opening of the border "could allow the passage of arms and terrorists."
And money. Lots and lots of money donated by those who've given up on Al Qaeda, but still want to support in jihad.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi had announced that Cairo planned to open the crossing, ending what he called his country's "shameful" cooperation in keeping it closed.

#3  Seems I remember the last time the border got "opened" by the Gazooks blowing a hole in the wall, the merchants in the vicinity on the Egyptian side complained of rampant Gazook thievery. Howz it supposed to be different this time, exactly?

Abbas: Palestine to go to UN in September
[Al Jazeera] the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, the Paleostinian president, has said that without a renewal of peace talks with Israel, the Paleostinians will seek UN recognition.
The only barrier to recognition being, in his eyes, President Obama, who seems a bit of a weak reed on the subject.
Abbas's comments, on Wednesday, came a day after a major speech by Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister.

"Our first choice is negotiations, but if there is no progress before September we will go to the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
," Abbas said, criticising Netanyahu's speech to the US congress on Tuesday, which, he said, was devoid of any new incentive to restart peace talks.

The Paleostinian leader said Netanyahu's speech only served to add obstacles on the road to peace and contained "errors and distortions".

'Painful compromises'
The Israeli leader, who addressed Congress on the last day of a trip to Washington, said he was willing to make "painful compromises" for peace.

But he ruled out a division of Jerusalem, the return of Paleostinian refugees, and the possibility of using the borders that existed before 1967 as a basis for peace negotiations.

Earlier, in a key policy speech on Thursday, Barack B.O. Obama, the US president, had called for new talks based on the lines in place before the 1967 Six Day War.

But Netanyahu used the trip to reject the 1967 lines as "indefensible" and insisted that Israel would never accept them as a basis for negotiations.

Officials in the West Bank city of Ramallah said the speech had only added more "obstacles" on the path to peace.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a meeting. It was to be his last...
Gazoo's Islamist Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, rulers said Netanyahu had laid down conditions which were "impossible" for the Paleostinians to meet.

"There is nothing new in Netanyahu's speech except that he is adding obstacles on the road towards a genuine, serious, lasting and comprehensive peace," said Nabil Abu Rudeina, front man for Paleostinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

1967 borders
Peace, Rudeina said, required international benchmarks such as recognition of the borders of 1967 as the basis for any peace negotiations.

Jibril Rajoub, a bigwig of Abbas's Fatah movement, told the AFP news agency that the address revealed the "true face" of Netanyahu and his ruling right-wing Likud party, which he described as "a danger to regional stability and international peace".

And Taher al-Nunu, a front man for the Hamas-run government in the Gazoo Strip, said it proved Netanyahu "doesn't want any grinding of the peace processor and that he is setting impossible conditions for the Paleostinians to meet."

He also said that Netanyahu was "trying to deceive the world by speaking of the possibility of recognising a Paleostinian state while destroying its foundations" by rejecting a return to the 1967 borders, by refusing to give up East Jerusalem, and by ruling out any return for the Paleostinian refugees.

The Israeli leader had been expected to make some kind of gesture to prevent the Paleostinians from pursuing a diplomatic campaign to win UN recognition, in a move expected to take place in September.

But Netanyahu said: "The Paleostinian attempt to impose a settlement through the United Nations will not bring peace. It should be forcefully opposed by all those who want to see this conflict end."

Paleostinian negotiator Mohammed Shtayeh said the speech had left Paleostinians with one choice - "to go to the UN in September, to the General Assembly".

Fatah-Hamas deal
The Israeli leader also took aim at the recently-signed reconciliation deal between Abbas's secular Fatah movement and Hamas, which does not recognise the state of Israel.

"I say to President Abbas: Tear up your pact with Hamas. Sit down and negotiate. Make peace with the Jewish state," he said.

"And if you do, I promise you this: Israel will not be the last country to welcome a Paleostinian state as a new member of the United Nations - it will be the first."

But Hamas front man Sami Abu Zuhri
...a senior front man for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gazoo. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest...
dismissed his remarks as "arrogant."

"The true response to this arrogant speech which denies Paleostinian rights should be the complete ending of all negotiation and the implementation of reconciliation as soon as possible," Zuhri said.

Southeast Asia
Indonesian cleric says US behind terror charges
[Asia One] Radical Indonesian holy man Abu Bakar Bashir
... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Bashir was jugged and then released in the wake of the 2002 Bali bombings, which he blamed on a conspiracy among the U.S., Israel, and Australia ...
on Wednesday pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to terrorism charges and accused the United States and liberal Mohammedans of trying to frame him.

The 72-year-old has been accused of providing funding of more than $62,000 (S$77,338) to a terrorist group dubbed Al-Qaeda in Aceh that was plotting attacks in Indonesia, and prosecutors have sought a maximum life sentence.

But in his formal response to the charges outlined in court last week, the pugnacious preacher said any allegation of terrorism against the Aceh beturbanned goons was a plot by the enemies of Islam.

"Prosecutors should realise that all trials which judge and punish the mujahid in Aceh are manipulations by the people who don't follow (Islamic law) to fulfil the interests of the US tyrant and its cronies," he said.

Bashir is seen as a spiritual leader of Southeast Asian Islamic exemplars, but he denies any role in terrorist activity.

"Because my rhetoric is considered dangerous, the dream of the US tyrant and its cronies could be realised with a life sentence," he said.

He rejected the prosecution's case that his radical organisation, Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT), was a front for terrorist activity.

The bearded holy man admitted he raised money for members of the JAT community but not to pay for weapons and Islamic exemplar training, as claimed by the prosecution.

Hundreds of Bashir's radical followers chanted "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) outside the court.

Bashir served almost 26 months behind bars for the Bali bombings of 2002 that killed more than 200 people, but his conviction was overturned after his release in 2006.

Prosecutors have also unsuccessfully charged him with involvement in church bombings in 2000 and an attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israeli song becomes Syrian opposition’s soundtrack
Israeli song becomes Syrian opposition’s soundtrack
Three songs on Israeli singer Amir Benayoun’s new Arabic-language album written at Syrian dissidents’ request.

Bashar Assad has blamed his country’s turmoil on Israel, but it’s doubtful the Syrian autocrat had this in mind.

At the request of Syrian opposition leaders, Israeli singer Amir Benayoun has recorded three songs in Arabic and dedicated them to activists in the Syrian uprising.

One of the songs, “Zini,” has already become a YouTube hit and serves as the soundtrack on a number of Syrian opposition leaders’ Facebook pages.

The three tracks are part of an album – also called Zini – released earlier this month on Benayoun’s label, Nevel Asor. The album’s songs, all in Arabic, are adaptations of the Book of Ecclesiastes translated with the help of Benayoun’s Algerian-born father, Maxim.

In February, “Zenga Zenga,” a pop mash-up by Israeli DJ Noy Alooshe, became an Internet sensation and the unofficial anthem of the revolt against Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. That success inspired Syrian opposition leaders to ask Ayoub Kara, deputy minister for development of the Negev and Galilee, whether he could convince Benayoun to record a similar track for their own protest movement.

Nasrallah stands firm behind Syria
Well behind Syria...
BEIRUT — The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group stood firmly behind his allies in Syria on Wednesday in his first comments on the country’s uprising, saying that toppling the Damascus regime would serve only U.S. and Israeli interests.

Hezbollah has much to lose if Syrian President Bashar Assad is deposed. Besides receiving money from Syria, Hezbollah also is believed to receive Iranian weapons shipments through the country.
And Nastie hides in Damascus...
“Overthrowing the regime in Syria is in the American and Israeli interest,” Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech marking “Liberation Day,” which celebrates the withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon in 2000 after 18 years of occupation. “They want to overthrow the regime and replace it with a moderate regime.”
Thanks for the confession that the current regime in Damascus isn't 'moderate'...
While praising uprisings that toppled longtime dictators in Egypt and Tunisia, Nasrallah urged the Syrian people to “protect their country” and give a chance for the Syrian leadership to implement reforms.
Yeah, you rubes should defend Pencilneck to the last drops of your blood...
“We are worried about what is being plotted for the regime in Syria and the Syrian people,” Nasrallah said, echoing Assad’s claims that the events in Syria were a foreign conspiracy aimed at weakening the country’s leadership.

“We should all cooperate so that Syria may emerge strong and immune,” he said.

“President Bashar Assad believes in reform and is serious and ready to go a long way toward reforms, but in a calm and responsible manner,” he said.
"It'll take time. Maybe a hundred years. That's calm and responsible!"
Nasrallah also lashed out at President Barack Obama for a speech he gave to the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC on Wednesday and said Obama and Israel have the same goals. Nasrallah said Obama and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu have dealt a “mortal blow” to the peace process.

He said the only way to liberate Israeli-occupied Arab land was through armed resistance, and referred to possible future marches toward Israeli borders.
By someone else. But he'll eat a goat in their honor...

Nasrallah calls on Syrians to support Assad
[Al Jazeera] Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Leb's Hezbullies, has called on Syrians to support president Bashir al-Assad and enter into dialogue with the government to end weeks of ongoing protests across Syria.

Nasrallah, speaking via video link from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location on Wednesday, made the remarks in an address marking the 11th anniversary of "Liberation Day".

The date marks the end of Israel's 22-year occupation of southern Leb.

"Bashar is serious about carrying out reforms but he has to do them gradually and in a responsible way; he should be given the chance to implement those reforms," Nasrallah told supporters gathered in the village of Nabi Sheet in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Rights groups have accused authorities in Syria of killing more than 1,000 people since protests against Assad's Baathist government began in March.

Nasrallah's comments are his first on the protests against Hezbullies's ally in Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
.
Sanctions condemned
Despite a rising civilian corpse count, fresh protests calling for regime change across Syria have continued to challenge the 40-year-old dynasty of Assad's family, who are Alawite Shia Mohammedans.

The Syrian government's crackdown has triggered international outrage and US and European sanctions, including assets freezes, travel bans and arms embargoes on Assad and other top members of the Baath party.

Nasrallah condemned the recent US and EU sanctions on Assad and other government officials, and said Hezbullies will reject any formal Lebanese participation in implementing them.

He said Hezbullies supported the Syrian government for its assistance in ending the Lebanese civil war and supporting "resistance movements" in the region.

Hezbullies was founded in the early 1980s as a Shia resistance organisation to Israel's occupation, and has since become a political party within Leb.
Given that all the Lebanese political parties seem to have armed wings, or be armed, it seems fair enough to characterize Hizb'allah that way.
