Afghanistan
Abdullah best bet for Afghan peace: Hamid Gul
[OMANTRIBUNE] Pakistain's former spymaster Hamid Gul
The nutty former head of Pakistain's ISI, now Godfather to Mullah Omar's Talibs and good buddy and consultant to al-Qaeda's high command...
says the Islamist group's long-time foe Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
has the best chance of securing peace.

Widely viewed as a "Godfather" figure for Pakistain's strategy of using jihadist proxies to exert influence in neighbouring countries, the 77-year-old retired general is still seen by some observers as offering a window into the mindset of the country's powerful military establishment.

As Afghanistan prepares for a run-off poll on Saturday between Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, Pakistain has maintained a neutral stance. But Gul, who headed Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency between 1987 and 1989 during the late stages of the Soviet occupation, said it would take a fighter, not an academic to secure peace for Afghanistan -- as long as he refused to sign a bilateral security agreement with the US.

Gul said Abdullah's past as a resistance fighter together with his shrewd choices of running mates made him uniquely placed to negotiate with those he called the "Afghan opposition" -- the Taliban.

Abdullah draws his main support from ethnic Tajiks in the north, while Ghani is a Pashtun like the majority of the country and the Taliban. But, said Gul: "Abdullah has a distinct advantage for future peace in Afghanistan -- if that is the objective and it should be -- that he is a jihadi.

"And the other people with him are also jihadis," he continued, referring to running mates Mohammad Khan, an ally of powerful Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
who has traditional ties to Pakistain, and Mohammad Mohaqeq -- a Hazara seen as closer to Iran.

"Ashraf Ghani is not a jihadi," he said about the ex-World Bank economist who spent the 1980s living in the US. "And for a jihadi to open a dialogue with a non-jihadi would be very difficult."

Following the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the country slid into anarchy, and Taliban fighters trained in Pakistain gradually prised control from the Northern Alliance of commander Ahmad Shah Massoud -- a revered national hero who was also Abdullah's mentor.

During this period, Gul maintained contacts with both sides in an unofficial role as a mediator. "At that time I used to live in Ahmad Shah Massoud's guesthouse and Abdullah was deputed to look after me so I met him almost every day" during trips from 1992-1995, prior to the Taliban's ascent to power.

He added his last trip to Afghanistan came in 2001. "And that was to attend the last parade of Taliban government on 19th of August 2001, just three weeks before 9/11. I was a chief guest there."

He warned that war would continue if the next Afghan president signs a security pact allowing some 10,000 US troops to remain in the country until 2016.

Some observers have accused Gul of aggrandising his role in regional affairs post-retirement, but security analyst Ayesha Siddiqa said he remained "strongly connected" with the prevalent line of thinking in the military's high command.

#2  as long as he refused to sign a bilateral security agreement with the US.
is a clue that we need to apply Susan Rice reverse logic. Why? He wants Afghanistan to fail so that Pakistan can exert influence.

Pakistain's former spymaster Hamid Gul says the Islamist group's long-time foe Abdullah Abdullah has the best chance of securing peace.

And,
"Ashraf Ghani is not a jihadi,"

Got it. Ashraf Ghani is who we should back. Susan Rice has made things so easy!

India-Pakistan
Israel to expand ties with Modi govt, offers help in Ganga clean-up
Expressing confidence that the relations between the two countries would go even further with a new government in New Delhi, Israel has said that the partnership needs to extend beyond defence and agriculture to public security and civilian trade.

The outgoing Israeli Ambassador to India, Alon Ushpiz, also pledged Tel Aviv's support and technology for the new government's plan to clean up the Ganga river, explaining that his nation has some of the best water technologies in the world.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ushpiz said the India-Israel trajectory is very positive and relations are an evolution process in which "every new layer is built on the previous one".

"My expectation from the government is that together we shall be able to to take all the things we have being doing in the last 10 years further.

There are things we are very good at, like defence and agriculture, but there are also others like civilian trade and water (where more can be done) and then there are things we are at the beginning of, like public security," said Ushpiz.

He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 16, after the election results, and congratulated him in a "brief but good conversation". He also said Tel Aviv is looking forward to hosting Modi as a state guest. "We will be very happy to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the second time, but his first as a PM," he said.

Ushpiz expressed hope that political interactions between the two countries would reach new heights in the coming months. "We hope to take advantage of the next couple to years to push diplomatic relations forward as one basket and another basket being political interactions. The high level political interactions will be increasing in the coming months," he said.

Ushpiz described the defence partnership between the two countries as "very serious and very unique". "There is a lot of appreciation of Indian (defence) professionals. We have a partnership, which means it is a two-way street, something which is very far away from a buying and selling relation," he said, defining the tipping point in the relation as "when two intimate partners who trust each other and start thinking of challenges together and solutions together and what follows together".

LI sets conditions for private schools
[DAWN] The Bara-based proscribed myrmidon organization, Lashkar-e-Islam, has asked all the private schools to ensure teaching of Koran and devise a uniform curriculum.

Sources said that the LI had, a few days back, convened a meeting of all the owners and heads of the private schools in Bara and warned them of stern action if they failed to implement a uniform curriculum and teach Koran in their respective schools.

The participants of the meeting were also told to reduce tuition fee and adopt same uniform for all schools. They were also told to provide free books to the needy students and devise a policy for promoting religious education in the private educational institutions.

Confirming the 'orders' issued by the LI, president of Bara private schools association, Asghar Afridi, said that there were over 300 private schools in Bara and they were all told to abide by the LI orders. He said that a committee would be formed to devise a uniform curriculum for all private schools so as to meet the LI demand. Except for Bar Qambar Khel area, government schools in the rest of Bara subdivision have been closed since 2009. Officials said that over 100 government schools had been destroyed by forces of Evil in retaliation to military operation in the area.

SHC allows Musharraf to go abroad
[DAWN] The Sindh High Court struck down on Thursday the federal government's order of preventing retired General Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
from leaving the country, but the former military ruler will have to wait for two weeks to find out if he could actually travel abroad as the court suspended the operation of its judgment for 15 days enabling the federation to file an appeal in the Supreme Court.

While disposing of Gen Musharraf's petition against placing his name on the exit control list (ECL), a two-judge bench comprising Justices Mohammad Ali Mazhar and Shahnawaz Tariq ordered: "The Memorandum No.12/74/2012-ECL, dated 5th April 2013, placing the name of General (retired) Pervez Musharraf on Exit Control List, is struck down."

The bench had reserved its judgment on May 29 after hearing final arguments of Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt and Gen Musharraf's counsel Barrister Farogh Naseem.

The attorney general contended that the federal government could not take the risk of allowing the former president to leave the country because there was a great incentive for him to flee in view of a treason case that involved the death penalty.

He referred to the Hussain Haqqani case and said that the former diplomat was given permission to leave the country and he never returned.

He submitted that the treason case against Gen Musharraf was of political nature and because of that, under the treaties with various countries, including the UAE, it would not be possible to seek his extradition.

The attorney general was of the view that the SHC lacked the territorial jurisdiction, and that it was in the public interest not to permit the petitioner to go abroad.

In response, Dr Farogh Naseem said that the former president was being victimised and his trial was being pursued for political reasons and not to ensure the administration of justice.

He further relied upon a case law on the point that the apprehension that the petitioner would leave Pakistain was not germane to the legality of an ECL order.

Besides, he said, no grounds were given while placing the former president's name on the ECL.

The bench in its 44-page verdict observed: "We are of the view that though the honourable Supreme Court as an interim measure directed the federation to put the name of the petitioner on ECL, but it reflects from the record that the federation before passing order by the apex court already put the name of the petitioner on ECL on 5-4-2013."

Pakistan condemns US drone strikes in North Waziristan
[DAWN] Two hours after her official briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam confirmed and condemned two pre-dawn US drone strikes that struck krazed killer hideouts in North Wazoo in the past 24 hours.

"The government of Pakistain condemns the two incidents of US drone strikes that took place near Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
in North Waziristan on 11 and 12 June," said a statement from the foreign office.

"These strikes are a violation of Pakistain's illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity and additionally, these strikes have a negative impact on the government's efforts to bring peace and stability in Pakistain and the region," it said.

Earlier during her briefing, Alsam had said that facts were being ascertained and added that Pakistain's position on drones is very clear.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Standing Buffalo drew a bead on his old enemy and squeezed the trigger...
foreign news agency Rooters reported that two top government officials said Islamabad had given the Americans "express approval" for the strikes -- the first time Pakistain has admitted to such cooperation.

Without naming the officials, the news agency reported that just weeks after peace talks with the Death Eaters stalled, a "joint Pakistain-US operation" had been ordered to hit the krazed killers.

Another official told Rooters that Pakistain had asked the United States for help after the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport attack on Sunday, and would be intensifying air strikes on krazed killer hideouts in coming days.

"The attacks were launched with the express approval of the Pakistain government and army," an anonymous government official was quoted by Rooters as saying.

"It is now policy that the Americans will not use drones without permission from the security establishment here. There will be complete coordination and Pakistain will be in the loop."

"We understand that drones will be an important part of our fight against the Taliban now," the official added.

The American drone program is extremely unpopular in Pakistain because it is perceived as killing innocent civilians, which the US denies. In the past, the Pak government has strongly condemned drone strikes -- maintaining a stance that strikes violate the country's illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The FO and government have previously raised concern over drone strikes with the US administration and at the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, saying the attacks are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
and humanitarian implications.

Two successive US drone strikes killed at least 16 suspected Death Eaters in Pakistain's northwest tribal area early Thursday, as pressure was building on Islamabad to react after the brazen attack on Karachi airport.

The first strike late Wednesday was said to have targeted a vehicle and a compound near the Afghan border in Tabbi village, killing four Uzbek krazed killers.

Sources told DawnNews that the second strike in Dand-i Darpakhel area reported early Thursday killed key Haqqani network commander Haji Gul as well as prominent Afghan Taliban capos.

These were the year's first such strikes in Pakistain's tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.

The last US drone attack on Pak soil was carried out on December 25, 2013, killing three suspected krazed killers. The strikes had been temporarily halted at the government's request.

Sami urges govt to pursue talks with Taliban again
[DAWN] Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, the chief of his own faction of Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...the political wing of the Pak Taliban...
(JUI-S) and a member of the now dysfunctional Taliban negotiation committee, said on Thursday that dialogue is the only solution to bring back peace in the country, DawnNews reported.

Speaking at a presser here, he urged the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
to pursue peace talks with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), saying that the country was currently in a state of war.

Commenting on last night's US drone attacks in North Wazoo, the JUI-S chief said: "The government can see now that drone strikes have started again as soon as peace talks is over with the Taliban."

Maulana Sami, who is known as "Father of Taliban" in the West, said he entered into the government's peace initiative with all honesty. He blamed the government for derailing the grinding of the peace processor.

"(Military) operation is not the solution to the issue ... were you expecting that Taliban will present sweets to you?" he said.

He condemned the armed attack on Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport that killed 37 people including all ten bully boyz on Sunday night.

Maulana Sami said that involvement of foreign hands was being investigated in the airport attack.

Commenting on Pak forces' air strikes in North Waziristan, he said thousands of rustics have fled the area due to the ongoing 'war.' He said his party would do all possible to help the IDPs.

Imran fears North Waziristan operation will be 'suicidal'
[DAWN] Reiterating his party's stance on peace talks with bad boys, Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) chief Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
on Thursday said that an offensive in North Wazoo would unite bad boy forces against the Pak state.

"Conducting such a military operation when most of the groups in NWA want talks is suicidal," Imran said in a statement, adding that most groups in North Waziristan desire peace talks with the government.

He also criticised the US Congress' move to link aid to a military offensive in North Waziristan, terming the move as an effort by the US to "purchase" the government's favour to carry out a military operation in the tribal region.

"The government must reject this US move and inform the national politicianship of the status of the dialogue mandated by the APC," urged the PTI chief.

"The government must ensure that those seeking dialogue are separated from those continuing to carry out acts of terror and to isolate the latter so action can be taken against them," he added.

Khan said that if a military operation is to be conducted, the government "must first explain what happened to the dialogue".

"It must also ensure that all civilians are evacuated from the area of the operation," said the PTI chairman.

Earlier, PTI leader Shireen Mazari condemned the recent US drone strikes in North Waziristan that killed a key Haqqani network commander along with members of the Afghan Taliban.

#1  Military asks PM to tackle Taliban with tough tactics

Like privately coordinating drone zaps with the Americans while at the same time publicly denouncing American drone zaps?

No. Stop drinking the kool-aid and stop building castles on sand. How about telling your people the truth?

You are never going to make peace with thugs. You are either going to defeat them or them you. Neville Chamberlain never had a chance and neither do you if you don't focus the nation on defeating the Jihadist within your own boarders.

How hard can it be? Doesn't the ISI know all the players and where they live?

India-Pakistan: Take Action Or Else
Bottom-line: as many of the terrorists [Pakistan] supported have declared war on their host and the neighbors concluded that Pakistan has lost control of the terrorism monster it created. Now the neighbors are discussing this situation with each other and international organizations. Pakistan appears unable to fix itself or deal with the international terror threat it created. Pakistan has been advised to take action, or else (the neighbors will).
Good article. TW, you will like this one. :-)
Indeed I do, Squinty dear. It would be lovely if the problem of Pakistan could so neatly be resolved by local efforts... and wise, given current conditions.

"Come together."

Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
delivered the administration's message, putting the onus on the Maliki government to "put sectarian differences aside and to come together in unity to begin to be more representative and inclusive."

Republican politicians and military analysts are urging the administration to get more involved -- President B.O. appeared to open the door Thursday to the possibility of Arclight airstrikes, but no decision has been made. Kerry said Friday the U.S. has "discussed a range of options including military action to provide support for the Iraqi government." He predicted "timely decisions" from the president.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
the gunnies continue their march through northern cities and towns, toppling fragile security forces and threatening the capital city of Storied Baghdad.

Congressional Republicans say the Maliki government is far from blameless here, having stoked sectarian tensions by alienating the Sunni minority -- in turn fueling the insurgency -- but say U.S. intervention is needed.

#2  Kerry and most of the libs in the State Department refuse to acknowledge nice sounding speeches and platitudes and kind phone calls to panicked heads of state mean NOTHING if there is not the willingness to do something.

Problem is diplomacy should be a means to an end not an end unto itself. At some point, you have to get up from the table and say "I don't think we are getting anywhere, you aren't negotiating in good faith, my second will be contacting you about our next meeting" and walk out. AND be willing upon walking out to call the nearest general and tell him to remount, reload, be prepared to move.

The only reason we are not still negotiating in Viet Nam is because Le Dak To know that Nixon and Kissinger would bomb the north into the stone age and not blink an eye.

We are still negotiating in Korea because we were afraid of Russia (who had just shown off their first A-Bomb for vast PR purposes) and we did not have the resolve to bomb the North into a rock pile (though both China and Russia now thoroughly regret staring us down).

The only time the US has won a war is when we've shoved an Unconditional Surrender document of about one paragraph in front of someone and stuck a pistol to their head. Too bad the Dems don't read history.

US Promises to Stand by Iraq, Offers Support to Combat Militants
[Tolo News] Washington vowed Wednesday to boost aid to Iraq and is mulling drone strikes amid fears Iraqi forces are crumbling in face of turbans increasingly emboldened since the US withdrawal.

Iraqi officials have already privately asked the US to consider sending in drones to root out turbans from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), who in a lightning offensive have seized a swathe of the north.

The request has been turned down in the past, but Washington is now weighing possibilities for more military assistance to Storied Baghdad, including drone strikes, a US official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Resorting to such aircraft -- which remain highly controversial in Afghanistan and Pakistain -- would mark a dramatic shift in the US engagement in Iraq, after the last American troops pulled out in late 2011.

"The United States has been fast to provide necessary support for the people and government of Iraq," National Security Advisor Susan Rice told a Washington think-tank.

"We are working together to roll back aggression and counter the threat" posed by ISIL to Iraq and the region, Rice said.

But she insisted the US "must do more to strengthen our partners' capacity to defeat the terrorist threat on their home turf by providing them the necessary training, equipment and support."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stressed there were no current plans to send US troops back to Iraq, where around 4,500 Americans died in the eight-year conflict.

She also denied the offensive, in which the turbans seized northern djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and then Tikrit, had caught Washington by surprise or marked a failure of US policy in the country it invaded in 2003.

The United States has repeatedly warned of the dangers of ISIL and has already expedited arms shipments to Iraq this year and ramped up training for Iraqi security forces.

#2  "The United States has been fast to provide necessary support for the people and government of Iraq," National Security Advisor Susan Rice told a Washington think-tank.

Using reverse Susan Rice logic this means that we haven't provided the necessary support which is, ta-DA, one reason why Iraq is failing.

I am glad that Rice makes it so easy to get to the truth.

#3  The only "support" that would work right now would be the insertion of a full light infantry brigade into Balad, to create a stop line, and then a full mech division to roll it back, with SF in the north to help direct the Kurds.

Thats not going to happen, so get ready for a replay of Saigon, with all the iraqis who helped us desperately trying to get their families into the US Embassy in Baghdad to get evac out.

Sen. Graham calls for air strikes on Iraq
[Iran Press TV] Sen. Lindsey Graham
... the endangered South Carolina RINO...
has called on US President Barack Obama
I inhaled. That was the point...
to authorize Arclight airstrikes in Iraq in order to halt the progress of al-Qaeda groups.

"There is no scenario where we can stop the bleeding in Iraq without American airpower," Sen. Graham (R-S.C.) said after leaving a classified Senate Armed Services Committee briefing, The Hill reports.

"If American airpower is not interjected into the equation, I don't see how you stop these people."

Graham's comments come as the Iraqi prime minister has asked the parliament to declare a state of emergency after al-Qaeda affiliated forces of Evil took control of the northern province of Nineveh.

Graham said that what he had heard behind the closed doors "scared the hell out of me" and if the president's military advisers recommended air attacks, "I would support it."

"We've got another Benghazi in the making here," Graham said.

The forces of Evil are now in control of some areas in northern Iraq. They have threatened to spread the violence to the holy Shia cities of Najaf and Karbala.

Sen. John Maverick McCain
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution...
also called for President B.O.'s national security team to resign over the deteriorating security situation in Iraq.

McCain specifically called for the resignation of Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Militants belonging to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL) have vowed to march towards the Iraqi capital.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Kinnison began his slow infiltration of the sewer system...
the United States is accelerating plans for massive weapons shipments to Iraq as the country is battling the resurgence of al-Qaeda violence.

The arms supplies, including Hellfire missiles and Scan Eagle unmanned drones, are expected to be airlifted to the country in the near future, The Independent reports.

Takfiris on run amid army operations in north: Iraq FM
[Iran Press TV] Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari says the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
Death Eaters who have recently stormed the country's northern cities of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and Tikrit are "on the run" because of the army's counterattacks.

Zebari told Sky News on Thursday that the situation in the two cities had "stared to be reversed," stressing that the al-Qaeda-linked Death Eaters are now "on the run."

"Iraqi security forces have managed to reorganize and push ... [militants] back to prevent them from taking some other important strategic installations further south of Tikrit" in the northern Salahuddin Province, according to the Iraqi minister.

He further said there are signs that the Takfiri Death Eaters are withdrawing from Mosul because of the Iraqi army's counter-offensive in the city.

The top Iraqi diplomat has called on the country's leaders to come together to counter the "serious" terrorist threats endangering the entire Iraq.

On June 10, Iraq's northern Nineveh Province fell into the hands of the Death Eaters. The Takfiri attacks have reportedly forced more than half a million people in and around Nineveh's picturesque provincial capital, Mosul, to flee their homes.

Clashes continue between Iraqi soldiers and the Takfiri Death Eaters, who have vowed to march toward the capital. The armed forces have also launched a major offensive against the Death Eaters operating in the Salahuddin Province.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
... Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party. Maliki imposed order on Basra wen the Shiites were going nuts, but has proven incapable of dealing with al-Qaeda's Sunni insurgency. Reelected to his third term in 2014...
said on June 10 that his country was involved in a "war against terrorism," stressing that Storied Baghdad "will never permit Mosul and Nineveh to remain under the shadow of terror and the terrorists."

UN Security Council to Meet on Iraq Crisis
[Iraq Sun] The U.N. Security Council meets Thursday to discuss the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, as the United States promises new aid to the beleaguered Storied Baghdad central government.

The Security Council will take part in a video briefing from the U.N. special representative to Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, amid reports snuffies of the (ISIL) continue their push south toward Storied Baghdad.

Wednesday, the snuffies captured the city of Tikrit, just a day after Iraqi security forces gave up their defense of the country's second largest city, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, in the country's Sunni heartland.

In Washington, the B.O. regime is looking at options to strengthen Iraqi forces that seem unable to stop what Stephen Zunes, a University of the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
regional analyst, described as a relatively small bully boy force.

"The advance has been quite surprising. They [ISIL] are not that powerful in terms of their military capabilities, and they certainly don't have a lot of support, even among the large Sunni population in that part of Iraq that opposes the Shi'ite-dominated regime in Storied Baghdad," Zunes said.

"However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
it appears that the regular forces of the Iraqi government were unwilling, or unable, to repel this assault," he added.

#1  I did some research and ran across the following:

Eastern Syria and western Iraq contain a similar Sunni, mostly Bedouin, Arab tribal population. Many of the tribes straddle the border with Syria (and Jordan and Saudi Arabia). These Sunni tribes are related (in terms of culture and religious attitudes) to the ones that run Saudi Arabia and dominate the Arabian Peninsula.

This is the group that forms the core of ISIL. ISIL is the perfect tool for Saudi Arabia.

U.S. Dithers on Weighing Direct Military Assistance to Iraq
[ONLINE.WSJ] The U.S. is weighing direct military assistance to Iraq, including possible airstrikes, where Sunni militants have seized control of some major Iraqi cities and have vowed to march on areas revered by Shiite Muslims.
Weighing airstrikes? What's to weigh? And Maliki asked days ago.
"What we have seen over the last couple of days indicates the degree to which Iraq is going to need more help--more help from us and more help from the international community," President Barack Obama bloviated.

YOU voted for them TWICE. What does that make you? It makes you an asscrack at Walmart. The US DESERVES Bozo. Remind me again why Obama got the Nobel. Cheeseballs, anyone?

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Derbas: Lebanon Implementing Decision on Stopping Refugee Flow
File under: Firehose, drinking from. Next it'll be the refugees from ISIS-stan.
[AnNahar] Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbas has stressed that the Lebanese authorities were implementing a decision taken late last month not to accept Syrians as refugees if they come from safe areas or regions far from the Lebanese border.

In remarks to An Nahar daily published on Thursday, Derbas said he informed U.N.'s refugee agency, UNHCR, about the move.

"Leb will accept the political asylum that only results from the fighting on the Lebanese-Syrian border," he stressed.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq has announced that displaced Syrians registered with the UNHCR should not return home as of June 1, warning they will lose their refugee status.

This measure is based on the concern about security in Leb and relations between the refugees and Lebanese citizens in areas hosting them and to prevent any friction, he said in a statement.

More than 1 million of Syrians are in Leb, leaving the country, home to 4.5 million people, struggling to cope with the massive influx of refugees.

The Syrian conflict started in March 2011 as largely peaceful protests against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
's rule that deteriorated into civil war.

The fighting has uprooted 9 million people from their homes, with over 6 million Syrians seeking shelter in safer parts of the country and at least 2.7 million fleeing to neighboring countries.

Sawan Asks for Death Penalty against Palestinian 'Terrorists'
Making friends and influencing people in the inimitable Palestinian way...
[AnNahar] The military examining magistrate asked on Thursday for the death penalty against scores of Paleostinians, who are on the run, for belonging to terrorist organizations, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said Judge Fadi Sawan issued his indictment against the 31 Paleostinians, accusing them of belonging to the Abdullah Azzam brigades and al-Qaeda.

Sawan also accused them of committing murder, attempted murder and robbery at gunpoint during the festivities that took place at the Mieh Mieh Paleostinian refugee camp on April 4.

NNA said that eight people were killed and ten others were maimed in the gunbattles.

Sawan issued an arrest warrant against the suspects and referred them to the permanent military court for trial.

Whereabouts of Shooter Vowing to 'Liberate Baabda Palace' Unknown
Indicative of the nihilistic zeitgeist.
[AnNahar] The whereabouts of the suspect who appeared in a controversial video message vowing to "liberate the Baabda Palace from the upcoming president" remain unknown.

According to al-Joumhouria newspaper published on Thursday, Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi referred a three-minute video, which went viral on social media, to General Prosecutor Samir Hammoud in order to apprehend three men and put them on trial.

The video shows three men celebrating the Resistance
That'd be the Hezbullies, natch...
and Liberation Day on May 25 by opening fire from machine guns from the rooftop of a building, reportedly located in Dahiyeh.

Hammoud tasked the Central Intelligence with identifying the suspects, in particular the man who said statements that "harm the national security and threatens coexistence."

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the daily said that the main suspect fled, prompting Hammoud to issue a search and investigation warrant against him.

Information obtained by the daily said that the man fled to the South.

The main suspect said in the video that this "was all in hopes of liberating Baabda from the new president," he continued eagerly: "On Tariq al-Jadeedah."

"Bullets will fall like rain today on Tariq al-Jadeedah... Poor them, they're very civilized," he added.

"Do you have any bomb?" the shooter wondered sarcastically, he then said: "This shot is for the eyes of Bashir al-Assad... and (Speaker Nabih) Berri."

The three men fired non-stop until they were out of ammunition.

Someone Is Lying: Obama Says Not Arming Syrian Rebels, Syrian Rebels Say He Is
As we noted yesterday, President Obama is saying he is contemplating arming and training Syrian rebels (just the 'moderates' which will be identified by their smiles). However, as the following PBS Frontline documentary exposes, the Syrian rebels themselves say they are already armed and trained by US in the use of sophisticated weapons and fighting techniques, including, one rebel said, "how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush."

#4  It's simply a matter of semantics. By arming the Iraqis, he's now armed the Syrian rebels. By encouraging the Iraqis to facilitate the transit of Iran fighters for baby Assad and the Russians, he has assisted his old friend Vlad. By agreeing to permit an extension of Iranian nuclear development, he's brokered a nifty el Quds Quick Reaction Force (QRF) to defend Iraq. By releasing high-level Taliban prisoners from GITMO, he has..... well, we've not nailed that one down just yet.

What is it about Obama foreign polity that you do not understand ?

Your statement is [more faith in Lee] is validated in Korda's Clouds of Glory. In fact, I just read essentially those same words yesterday. Can't remember the page number. Fascinating read by the way.
