[DAWN] The city's health authorities on Thursday confirmed another death from brain-eating amoeba, or Naegleria fowleri, but the fact that the second victim too belonged to the same locality worried them the most, raising questions whether the water supply utility was adequately chlorinating the water being supplied to the area.
Health officials identified the latest victim of naegleria as 22-year-old Abdul Basit who lived in Sunny Heights in Gulistan-e-Jauhar near Rashid Minhas Road.
The patient was admitted to a private hospital on Monday in a 'highly critical' condition and was put on a ventilator before being moved into the intensive care unit where he died on Tuesday. The authorities confirmed the death on Thursday.
"The victim died after enduring the deadly disease for a day in a private hospital," said Dr Zafar Ijaz, executive district officer of health while speaking to Dawn.

[OMANTRIBUNE] East African states threatened late on Tuesday to slap South Sudan's warring sides with sanctions unless they cease all military operations in a conflict which has sparked fears that it could spiral into genocide.
South Sudan's government and rebels, locked in heavy fighting since mid-December, signed a second ceasefire agreement in May after a previous deal failed to hold.
But government forces backing President Salva Kiir and soldiers loyal to his sacked deputy Riek Machar violated the ceasefire hours after it took effect, with the continued bloodshed compounding the worsening humanitarian crisis in the world's youngest country.
Fighting has already killed thousands of people and driven more than 1.3 million from their homes. The UN has warned that 4 million people could be on the brink of starvation by the end of the year because violence had disrupted the planting season.
On Tuesday, leaders from the Intergovernmental Agency for Development -- the East African bloc brokering peace talks -- held discussions with both Kiir and Machar to push for an end to fighting ahead of negotiations on the formation of a transitional government.
"They (Kiir and Machar) agreed fully to commit themselves to the already signed agreements and to complete all negotiations within the coming 60 days and then establish a transitional government of national unity," Æthiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said.

Thus, the new Kh-35s are a significant upgrade to North Korea's anti-ship capabilities. It's notable that Pyongyang displayed them at a time when the two Koreas' navies and coast guards have been exchanging fire across the NLL on a fairly frequent basis. This suggests that North Korea has probably had the Kh-35 missiles for some time, and has decided to display them now to send a warning to Seoul.
Regardless of the exact timing of North Korea's procurement of the missiles, the obvious question is which country sold them to North Korea? One possibility, of course, is that Russia sold the Kh-35 directly to Pyongyang. Indeed, Russia has exported the Kh-35 to a number of different countries, including India, Algeria, and Vietnam.
However the fact that Russia has exported the Kh-35 missiles to numerous countries makes it harder to pinpoint North Korea's supplier. North Korea's most likely source is Myanmar. As The Diplomat has previously reported, Myanmar's Aung Zeya class frigate are equipped with Kh-35 anti-ship missiles. Myanmar's air force is also believed to have an air-launched version of the Kh-35 missiles. Although Russia doesn't appear to have acknowledged theses sales, Myanmar's Kh-35s almost certainly came from Moscow. It's possible but less likely that Myanmar procured them from another countries that imported them from Russia, such as India or Vietnam.
Myanmar and North Korea have a long history of military cooperation, which includes both countries selling the other side defense technology and weaponry. By contrast, while the Soviet Union certainly provided weapons to North Korea during the Cold War, there's less evidence that it continues to do so today in any significant manner.
Given that the Kh-35 missiles weren't completed until after the Soviet Union's collapse, this leaves Myanmar as the most likely source for North Korea's new anti-ship missiles. If so, the exact timing of the exchange becomes important because although Myanmar has long sold North Korea weapons it has assured the U.S. in recent years that it has severed all military ties to North Korea and is abiding by the UN Security Council resolutions against North Korea. There has been considerable evidence to suggest that this is not entirely truthful. Still, selling North Korea the Kh-35s after those assurances have been given would be a particularly egregious provocation.

[Iran Press TV] Russia has accused Ukraine of using prohibited weapons during military operations to regain the pro-Russian militias' stronghold of Slavyansk.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Ukrainian forces have been using the prohibited arms against civilians in Slavyansk. The ministry added that refugees and children are also targeted in the operations.
And who would know more about banned weapons than the Russians?
"Ukrainian defense forces and nationalists are using prohibited weapons against the Slavyansk civilians, firing on refugees and killing children," said Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Special Representative for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law.
"Kiev's humanitarian crimes against (Ukraine's) southeastern residents are multiplying. They must be investigated and the guilty punished," Dolgov added.
Senior officials in Kiev have categorically denied the allegations. No, no! Certainly not!
Slavyansk has been the epicenter of Ukraine's two-month offensive against pro-Russia protesters. Ukraine's Health Ministry says the battles have claimed the lives of 270 pro-Russia gunnies, federal soldiers and civilians.
Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking parts in the east have been the scene of deadly festivities between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in the southeastern regions in mid-April in a bid to root out the demonstrations there.
Kiev says it is targeting armed pro-Russia protesters, but many civilians have been caught in the shelling that has been going on for days.
Schools, houses, institutions and even an orphanage have been targeted by Kiev's military in the city of Slavyansk in recent weeks.

[DAWN] Dr Tahirul Qadri has announced his homecoming "to get the people their basic rights", demanding the armed forces to man Islamabad airport when he will land there on June 23.
"I'm coming home on June 23 even at the risk of my life for the love of 200 million people, who cannot get their rights under the prevailing system," he told a presser on Wednesday through a video link from Canada.
He insisted that his struggle for getting the rights would be constitutional and democratic but Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said Mr Qadri was coming to assault the Constitution and "the government is ready to face him."

[DAWN] The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central... government has expressed its inability to pay billions of rupees to the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited for legalising gas connections in the two major gas producing districts of the province over shortage of funds.
The development comes almost four months after the provincial government assured the petroleum and natural resources ministry of the Rs6 billion payment to the SNGPL for regularising illegal gas connections in Karak and Kohat.
The issue came under discussion during a last week meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.
The federal petroleum and natural resources secretary, provincial chief secretary, and senior SNGPL and relevant provincial government officials were also in attendance.
It is learnt that the provincial government will contact the Bank of Khyber to provide loan for the gas connection regularisation, while the SNGPL will carry out feasibility study for the project in Karak.

Study: West Antarctic Glacier Melt Due To Volcanoes, Not Global Warming
A new study by researchers at the University of Texas, Austin found that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is collapsing due to geothermal heat, not man-made global warming.
Researchers from the UTA's Institute for Geophysics found that the Thwaites Glacier in western Antarctica is being eroded by the ocean as well as geothermal heat from magma and subaerial volcanoes. Thwaites is considered a key glacier for understanding future sea level rise.
UTA researchers used radar techniques to map water flows under ice sheets and estimate the rate of ice melt in the glacier. As it turns out, geothermal heat from magma and volcanoes under the glacier is much hotter and covers a much wider area than was previously thought.
"Geothermal flux is one of the most dynamically critical ice sheet boundary conditions but is extremely difficult to constrain at the scale required to understand and predict the behavior of rapidly changing glaciers," UTA researchers wrote in their study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The geothermal heat under the glaciers is likely a key factor in why the ice sheet is currently collapsing. Before this study, it was assumed that heat flow under the glacier was evenly distributed throughout, but UTA's study shows this is not the case. Heat levels under the glacier are uneven, with some areas being much hotter than others.
"The combination of variable subglacial geothermal heat flow and the interacting subglacial water system could threaten the stability of Thwaites Glacier in ways that we never before imagined," lead researcher David Schroeder said in a press release.
"It's the most complex thermal environment you might imagine," echoed co-author Don Blankenship "And then you plop the most critical dynamically unstable ice sheet on planet Earth in the middle of this thing, and then you try to model it. It's virtually impossible."
Scientists and environmentalists have been pointing to Antarctica's collapsing western ice sheet as further evidence the planet is warming. NASA glaciologist Eric Rignot recently found that the western ice sheet collapse is "unstoppable" and could dramatically raise sea levels.
"The highest storm surge from Hurricane Sandy, or Superstorm Sandy, was just under 13 feet, and a whole lot of places it was 10 feet or less," Penn State University glaciologist Richard Alley told Mother Jones' Chris Mooney in a podcast.
"And we're looking at 11 feet, or something like that, from West Antarctica," Alley said. "Plus a little thermal expansion [water expanding as it gets warmer] and some mountain glacier melting that are already on the table. And so you can sort of think of the storm surge of Hurricane Sandy, something vaguely in that neighborhood for most of the coastline of the world."
But reports of the western ice sheet's collapse comes as Antarctic ice sheets continue to break records. At the end of May, Antarctic sea ice extent reached the highest level since measurements began in 1979.
Sea ice extent reached nearly 13 million square kilometers -- 10.3 percent above the 1981-2010 climatological average of 11.7 million square kilometers. The previous record was 12.7 million square kilometers set in 2010.
Previous studies have also shown that the collapse of the continent's western ice sheet is nothing new. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has released two major studies in the last year showing that the thinning south pole ice is nothing new.
A BAS study from February found that Antarctica's Pine Island glacier thinned just as fast 8,000 years ago as it has in recent times -- it also was able to reverse the collapse.
Another BAS study from last year says western Antarctic thinning is within the "natural range of climate variability" of the last 300 years.
"The record shows that this region has warmed since the late 1950s, at a similar magnitude to that observed in the Antarctic Peninsula and central West Antarctica," said a BAS study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters last year, "however, this warming trend is not unique."
"More dramatic isotopic warming (and cooling) trends occurred in the mid-19th and 18th centuries, suggesting that at present the effect of anthropogenic climate drivers at this location has not exceeded the natural range of climate variability in the context of the past ~300 years," the study said.

By disguising the fact that they are not speaking in their own voices, [they] diminish our belief that their voices are original and worth listening to." According to Palaima, when he and Hedges spoke on the phone prior to publication of the American-Statesman piece, Hedges suggested that Palaima was not competent to question his work. Palaima, a MacArthur Fellow and veteran classicist, replied that he was adhering to the basic rules of scholarship in which proper citation is given.
A pedants pedantry, indeed, as he insisted on defending the eminently defensible, merely because it was both right and true.
