Kenya asks UN to finance Somalia war against Shabaab
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] Kenya has urged the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
to finance the continental counter-terrorism mission in Somalia, arguing that this will stop the country from falling back to al-Shabaab
... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia...
control, reports CGTN Africa.

Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary Ababu Namwamba said there was need to plug funding gaps and boost counter-terrorism efforts.

"The promotion and maintenance of peace and security in the world is the primary mandate of the United Nations," Mr Namwamba told a gathering of diplomats from the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
in Brussels on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) continues to suffer insufficient and unpredictable funding," he added

Kenya, Æthiopia, Uganda, Djibouti and Burundi have jointly contributed troops to the 22,000-strong force, initially meant to last only six months in 2007, but which is still engaged in a dogged fight with the terrorist group.

With 3,664 soldiers in Amisom, Kenya has previously called for more predictable funding for Amisom. This request comes barely two weeks after the DusitD2 attack in Kenya’s capital Nairobi in which 21 people were killed in which al-Shabaab took responsibility for the attack.

Algeria's main Islamist party to run in presidential poll
[PULSE.NG] Algeria's main Islamist party, the Movement for the Society of Peace, said Saturday it has decided to take part in April's presidential election.

During the night of Friday to Saturday "the consultative council decided by an overwhelming majority to take part in the presidential election and to present Dr Abderrazak Makri as the party's candidate," the MSP's head of communications Abdellah Bouadji told AFP.

Presenting itself as Islamist and moderate, the MSP had supported ageing incumbent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
... 10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third or fourth term. Maybe it's the fifth....
within a governing alliance, before going its own way in 2012.

Bouteflika, 81, who uses a wheelchair and has rarely been seen in public since a stroke in 2013, is due to complete a fourth term in office on April 28. The election is set for April 18.

Despite his advanced age and poor health, some of Bouteflika's supporters have called for him to stand for a fifth term.

But the president himself is yet to make his plans clear.

By law, would-be candidates have until March 4 to register with the constitutional court.

Ahead of the last presidential election in 2014, Bouteflika only declared his intention to run a few days ahead of the deadline.

Europe
Germany rolls up refugee welcome mat to face off right-wing threat
Berlin (CNN)Nearly four years after almost 1 million refugees were welcomed into the country, Germany has quietly been closing the window on asylum applications and ramping up deportations.

This trend has continued even as the number of people arriving in Europe has dropped 80% since the height of the migrant crisis in 2015, according to the UN.

On Wednesday, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer announced that in 2018 Germany received about 185,000 asylum applications, a drop of 17% from last year, and far fewer than the 2015 peak of 890,000.

"We now have the problem under control. We have put things in order," said Seehofer. "We offer protection for people who are vulnerable. However, the population will only accept asylum rights if we can repatriate those who don't need to be protected.''

Seehofer proudly stated that the number was well within the "upper limit" to migration agreed by Germany's coalition government.

Turkey expects US to cut cooperation with YPG in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
expects the United States to cut cooperation with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and remove the militia from Manbij, the Ottoman Turkish Defence Ministry said in a statement citing Ottoman Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar.

"During his meeting with Jeffery, Akar said that Ankara expects Washington to stop cooperating with the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party ‐ YPG and to implement the roadmap for the Manbij region as soon as possible. He conveyed the sensitivity of Ankara regarding the territorial integrity of Syria and expressed confidence that Turkey and the United States, acting together, can eliminate the accumulated problems," Ottoman Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said during a meeting with US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey in Ankara on Friday.

The statement comes after on January 15, Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
said, following a phone conversation with Trump, that the latter had proposed creating a 30-kilometre (18-mile) buffer zone in Syria. According to Erdogan, the future security zone will be controlled by the country’s military.

Erdogan ‘won’t back off’ from military ops. in Syria ‘if needed’
[ALMASDARNEWS] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
said that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
has completed all necessary military preparations for a military operation in northern Syria while speaking in Ankara on Saturday at the ruling Justice and Development Party’s presentation of mayoral candidates for the southeastern Gaziantep province.

"We have showed with the Shield of Euphrates and Olive Branch operations that we won’t flinch from any military movement if needed. We have mostly completed our armed forces preparations to be used in case of need. We are waiting for the consequences of the political and diplomatic process which are still going on", the Ottoman Turkish leader said.

Erdogan also confirmed that he met Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
in Moscow earlier this week, with the two leaders discussing the stabilisation of Syria’s Idlib province.

Blasphemy lawyer returns to Pakistan to aid in Bibi appeal
[PULSE.NG] Saif-ul-Malook fled to the Netherlands from Pakistain in November last year after violent protests erupted over the Pak Supreme Court's decision to overturn the conviction of Asia Bibi, who was on death row.

Pakistain's Supreme Court will decide on Tuesday whether to allow an appeal against Bibi's acquittal, lawyers in the case have said.

Christian Union party parliamentarian Joel Voordewind tweeted a picture of himself and Malook saying "this afternoon (Saturday) I escorted Asia Bibi's lawyer, Mr Malook to Schiphol airport."

"He's going back to Pakistain to hopefully represent Asia for the last time in her case," Voordewind said.

The Netherlands last year granted Malook a temporary stay, but Voordewind said Malook will "unfortunately lose his asylum status in the Netherlands."

The allegations against Bibi date back to 2009, when Moslem women accused her of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed, a charge punishable by death under the colonial-era legislation.

Her case drew the attention of international rights groups and swiftly became the most high-profile in the country.

If the court refuses to allow the appeal, it will remove the last legal hurdle facing Bibi, who is a prime target in conservative Moslem-majority Pakistain and remains in protective custody.

Bibi was on death row for eight years for blasphemy, a hugely sensitive charge.

All of Israel within range of Syrian missiles: ex-SAA general
[ALMASDARNEWS] A former general from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) told Sputnik Arabic on Saturday morning that all of Israel is within range of Syria’s guided missiles.

"Syria’s missiles enjoy high capabilities and have been stockpiled in large numbers as a deterrence against a massive war in the Middle-East region," General Reza Shariqi told Sputnik Arabic.

In a jab at Israel’s air defenses, Sharqi told Sputnik Arabic that Syria’s missiles could overwhelm their Iron Dome system.

"Our strategic missiles can reach any target in the occupied territories," he continued.

General Shariqi said that Syria has stockpiled its missiles in secret places to remain safe against the Israeli attacks.

The Syrian general’s comments come just days after Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Bashar al-Ja’afari issued a statement that threatened a tit-for-tat attack on the Tel Aviv Airport.
