Several fighters defect from Al-Shabaab, surrender in Somalia
[Garowe] Dozens of al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
fighters have downed their tools following amnesty was given by the Somali government, with the national army set to commence the second and perhaps the final assault on the Lions of Islam who still control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

According to reports, over 100 Lions of Islam have already crossed over and are now supporting the stabilization process in the Horn of Africa nation. This is the largest single defection from the group, a move which could further weaken the al-Shabaab, who are fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.

Abdullahi Nor, the National Counter-Terrorism Center director, said over 107 Lions of Islam have since crossed over to the government, adding that most of them are taking advantage of the amnesty. The government of Somalia agreed to reintegrate defectors into the community after going through rehabilitation.

Without giving timelines, the government agency gave amnesty to those willing to defect from the group. Analysts said the offer was a move by the government to provide exit avenues for al-Shabaab Lions of Islam who were facing increasing pressure from the government with the net effect of weakening the terrorist group structure.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is currently leading the war efforts in central parts of the country. Already, he has visited Galgaduud and Mahas within the Hiiraan region, asking locals to support the ongoing offensive against the Lions of Islam across the country, adding that the country will stabilize in the future.

The president is also exploring ways of tracing and blocking al-Shabaab's sources of revenue, which has been sustaining the group's operations. Already, over 250 bank accounts and 70 mobile money transfer firms have been closed down following information from intelligence teams.

Britain
UK terror suspect appears in court following capture in prison escape
The next step after the hunt a few days ago.
[IsraelTimes] A former soldier facing terror charges appears in court in London, accused of escaping from the prison where he was being held.

Daniel Khalife,
...more fully Daniel Abed Khalife, when his mother is seriously displeased...
21, was arrested on Saturday after a huge four-day hunt to locate him after his disappearance from Wandsworth prison in south London. He strapped himself to the underside of a food delivery truck, possibly using bedsheets, to escape, Westminster Magistrates Court was told.

Khalife, wearing a gray jumper and jogging bottoms, appears in the dock flanked by two coppers and a security guard. He speaks only to confirm his name and date of birth and is remanded in jug until a further hearing at the Old Bailey court in London on September 29.

Khalife was awaiting trial over two incidents at the Royal Air Force based in Stafford, central England, near the army barracks where he lived. He is accused of "attempting to elicit information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism" in August 2021.

Jogger claims he saw 'Iran spy' Daniel Khalife twice the day before fugitive was finally caught after prison break - but insists he couldn't get through to police to report sighting

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A jogger today claimed he saw accused spy Daniel Khalife twice the day before he was caught after escaping Wandsworth prison but couldn't get through to police to report the sighting.

Frank Noon claims he spotted someone who fitted the profile of the suspected terrorist asleep on a bench in West London on Friday morning, then saw him again sitting in a shed at the entrance to an old cemetery.

The 21-year-old was remanded into custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with escaping custody at HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday and will next appear at the Old Bailey on September 29.

Former soldier Khalife, who has been accused of spying for Iran, was arrested on a canal towpath in west London at 10.41am on Saturday after being pulled off a push bike by a plain-clothes counter-terrorism officer. Prior to his alleged escape, Khalife had been on remand at Wandsworth Prison after being charged with terror offences in January.

Prosecutor Thomas Williams said on the morning of 6 September, Wandsworth prison notified police that Khalife was missing. He had been working in the jail kitchen and 'there were suspicions he had disappeared via a food delivery truck.'

The court heard police intercepted the delivery truck at 8:40am on Upper Richmond Road. Police found two makeshift straps, made from material thought to be from bed sheets, with clips on each end, attached to the underside of the vehicle.

Mr Williams said: 'There was a four-day manhunt of 150 coppers per day, using resources from other police forces and government agencies.'

The court heard Khalife was arrested at 10:41am on 9 September after a plain clothed officer, in an unmarked vehicle received reports Khalife had been spotted on a bicycle.

Khalife had in his possession a small amount of money, clothes and a mobile phone. He told officers he had 'almost been caught on several occasions', that he 'hated the governor of Wandsworth', and that he had been to Richmond Park and the Chiswick area Khalife also told officers the lorry driver was unaware of his escape.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram remanded Khalife in jug ahead of a preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey on 29 September.

A 75-hour manhunt was launched after he escaped by clinging to the bottom of a food delivery lorry. British-born Khalife, who has Iranian and Lebanese heritage, was charged in January with breaching the Official Secrets Act and for an alleged bomb hoax at his barracks. Over the weekend he was charged with escaping HMP Wandsworth contrary to common law.

Scotland Yard was last night refocusing its efforts on piecing together Khalife's four days on the run, including probing those who might have helped him escape or evade capture while on the lam.

Suspicions that Khalife relied on a network of support were fuelled after he was arrested wearing new clothes, carrying a Waitrose cool bag filled with food and travelling on a mountain bike. A former prisons minister said the terror suspect would have received some sort of 'collusion and support'.

During the manhunt, a house in Richmond, south-west London, was raided by police after intercepted communications led them to believe Khalife may have been there, security sources told The Mail on Sunday.

Shortly after the raid, there were sightings less than three miles away in Chiswick. Khalife was detained as he cycled along a canal towpath in Greenford, west London.

Sources have also claimed that Khalife, who is accused of spying for Iran, had access to a mobile phone behind bars, raising the prospect that it may have been smuggled in by a visitor or a member of staff.

Officials have refused to comment on whether he had access to a phone, but Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the escape was clearly planned. He told LBC: 'It is a question. Did anyone inside the prison help him? Other prisoners, guard staff? Was he helped by people outside the walls or was it simply all of his own creation? This is really concerning.'

Two guards at HMP Wandsworth have been suspended following Khalife's escape. It is understood both were involved in overseeing the exit of the Bidfood catering vehicle from the prison grounds.

It also emerged that Wandsworth's head of security and safety is under investigation for alleged misconduct. Bobby Cunningham was suspended a few months ago.

Former prisons minister Rory Stewart told Sky News: 'It seems clear if he had strapping underneath this vehicle, that there was some kind of collusion and support. But it's also clear that they seemed to spend, I don't know, half an hour [to] 45 minutes before they even noticed he was gone from the kitchen, and he shouldn't be in the kitchen in the first place.'

$6 billion to Iran - Sec’ty of State Antony Blinken signed off last week but Congress was not notified of the decision until Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks
[FoxNews] Biden admin strikes deal with Iran to swap prisoners, release $6 billion in frozen funds.

Per the deal, Iran will release five American citizens detained in Iran and the U.S. release five Iranian citizens being held in the U.S.

The deal creates a blanket waiver to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of violating U.S. sanctions. No money is going directly to Iran and no U.S. taxpayer funds are being used.

The United States classifies Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the deal late last week, but Congress was not notified of the decision until Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, according to the notification, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The transfer of the $6 billion was the critical element in the prisoner release deal, which saw four of the five American detainees transferred from Iranian jails into house arrest last month. The fifth detainee had already been under house arrest.

Due to numerous U.S. sanctions on foreign banks that engage in transactions aimed at benefiting Iran, several European countries had balked at participating in the transfer. Blinken's waiver is aimed at easing their concerns about any risk of U.S. sanctions.

National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Secretary Blinken undertook a procedural step last week "to ensure Iranian funds could move from one restricted account to another and remain restricted to humanitarian trade."

"As we have said from the outset, what is being pursued here is an arrangement wherein we secure the release of 5 wrongfully held Americans. This remains a sensitive and ongoing process," Watson said.

"While this is a step in the process, no individuals have been or will be released into U.S. custody this week. We have kept Congress extensively informed from the outset of this process – long before today – and we will continue to do so, including with additional already scheduled briefings this week."

The deal has garnered some criticism. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies who focuses on Iranian security, argued that releasing the funds "will only feed Tehran's appetite to keep taking hostages."

"And as the case of the recently revealed Swedish diplomat illustrates, dual-nationals and foreign citizens are not the only targets. Tehran even intends to extort foreign government officials!" he said.

"Indeed, the Islamic Republic showcased for the world a willingness to take hostages less than a year since its inception. Worse, freeing-up the $6 billion forgets why it was frozen in the first place. Even the Obama administration, who signed sanctions bills into law creating those escrow accounts, did not trust Iran to stop funding its nuclear or military programs using oil money."

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, argued that the $6 billion "payout" will go to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its proxies.

"This will only greenlight Iran's illicit actions and encourage further hostage ‘diplomacy,’" Ernest argued. "Biden's failed strategy of appeasement must end."

#1  As I recall, the five detained Americans are of Iranian descent who returned to Iran and were arrested. Who said 'not one cent in tribute?' And to pay tribute to free five morons?

#2  I think that at least hundreds, probably thousands, maybe tens of thousands of US residents who were former Iran citizens visit Iran each year. This is mostly to visit family, sometimes to transact business.

I'm sure the numbers are way down in 2023 but there are still people doing this.

#3  Iran does not recognize dual citizenship, and Iranian citizenship is inherited through the father, as I understand it. So emigrants go ”home” to visit relatives on their Iranian passport, assuming themselves to thus be invisible to malign forces.

I was terrified when my first fosterling visited Iran with her father. She was a typical spoilt American teen, loudly protective of her rights and oblivious to the key cultural differences found in a totalitarian society. Also, while her father floated between Islam and his family's Baha’i faith, she was all in on being a member of such an interesting minority. Fortunately, the local cousins were very protective of their American visitors.

Kalash youth extend helping hand to security forces
[Dawn]: The people of Chitral have hailed the youth of the Shiekhandeh area of Bumburate valley for swiftly carrying ammunition and other paraphernalia of the security forces to the Astoi post located on the border with Afghanistan on the morning of Sept 6 when the militants of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan launched an attack on the security posts here.

Khalilur Rahman, chairman of Bumburate village council, told Dawn that when he came to know about the clash on the morning of that fateful day, he rushed to the Shiekhandeh post of security forces in his village and offered his services. “I was told that replenishment of ammunition and ration to the border post was to be made on an emergency basis.”
Good lad.
“Within a few minutes, about 60 young men assembled in front of the Shiekhandeh post and started carrying boxes of ammunition and sacks of other articles from there to the Astoi post,” he said, adding it took the youth three hours to reach the border post as there is no road up to that post.

He said none of the youth had taken his breakfast when they were asked to reach the Shiekhandeh post. He said the youth set on their journey on a constantly inclined terrain, but their passion and zest defied all the troubles and difficulties. Mr Rahman said the youth was so charged that they made two to three round trips to the post in Astoi without having food, replenishing the personnel with ammunition and other necessary items. “Even firing from the militants didn’t stop them from completing their noble mission.”

The Bumburate village chairman said on the second and third day of the incident, the Kalash people also joined the youth, and about 300 persons took part in carrying the articles up to the post.

Lower Chitral Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ali Khan extolled the voluntary services of the residents of Bumburate Valley, especially the youth of Shiekhandeh. He said a special ceremony would be held to recognise the exemplary services rendered by the people of Bumburate.

Meanwhile, tourists have started visiting the Kalash valleys of Bumburate, Birir, and Rumbur as conditions have come to normalcy in the valleys after the skirmishes between the security forces and the TTP militants on the border near Bumburate on Sept 6.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Iran hits back at threats by Mossad chief: ‘You have been hit by us before’
[IsraelTimes] Iranian Foreign Ministry front man Nasser Kanaani replies to Mossad chief David Barnea’s threat to strike Iran’s leaders if Israelis or Jews will be harmed, saying, "You have been hit by us before. We will not hesitate to respond to any foolish aggression."

In a statement reported by Hezbollah’s news agency, al-Mayadeen, the front man says Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
will not take lightly threats by any party, including the "Zionist regime," when ensuring its security.

The Mossad head’s "declared intention to assassinate officials in Iran clearly indicates the nature of the [Zionist] entity and its terrorist face," Kanaani adds.

On Sunday, Barnea warned Iran’s leaders that they would pay a direct price if Israelis or Jews are harmed, in what he said was an ongoing, state-organized Iranian terror effort worldwide, carried out in accordance with a "political directive by the leader" — an apparent reference to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
Speaking at a conference at Reichman University in Herzliya, Barnea revealed that the Mossad and its allies in the international intelligence community have foiled 27 Iranian attacks against Jews and Israelis abroad over the past year, and declared that Israel would exact "a different" price from Iran if Israelis or Jews were harmed.

Ex-Mossad official claims spy agency chief’s threat to Iran actually aimed at US

[IsraelTimes] Haim Tomer believes Barnea received Netanyahu’s backing for speech warning that Israel will go after regime leaders in Tehran if Israelis or Jews hurt in Iranian terror

A former senior Mossad official said Monday that a warning issued by spy agency chief David Barnea to Iran a day earlier was in fact aimed at making it clear to the United States that Israel has the freedom to act, even in the heart of Tehran.

Haim Tomer, a former Mossad chief of intelligence and operations, additionally claimed that Barnea’s comments carried the approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Barnea did not threaten the Iranians. He is a serious enough person to understand that that has no meaning. He made a threat to the Americans," Tomer told Radio 103FM in comments cited by the Walla news site.

"[Barnea] is expressing harsh criticism of the current US administration," Tomer said. "He is telling the Americans that he has freedom of action, and that he is not interested in what they do in Tehran, or about the nuclear issue."

Barnea on Sunday warned Iran’s leaders that they would pay a direct price, even if they were deep in the Iranian capital, should any Israelis or Jews be harmed in what he said was an ongoing, significantly stepped-up, state-organized Iranian terror effort worldwide.

Tomer said he believed that Barnea would not have sent such a message to Washington with his speech if he did not have the backing of the premier.

"Barnea would not speak like that on a public stage without receiving permission from the Prime Minister’s Office," Tomer said. "I have no doubt that the prime minister supported this strong speech."

Washington is thought to oppose actions that could embroil the region in war, especially as it pursues a diplomatic deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, but has remained mum following suspected Israeli sabotage attacks inside Iran in the past.

Tomer said he believed Barnea to be "frustrated" by the growing contacts between the US and Iran, while Washington "isn’t working to restrain the Iranians."

Speaking at an annual conference of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism Policy (ICT) at Reichman University in Herzliya, Barnea said on Sunday that the Mossad and its allies in the international intelligence community have foiled 27 Iranian attacks against Jews and Israelis abroad over the past year.

"The squads that were captured, the weapons that were seized together with them, all had clear targets," he said, noting that the attempts occurred "all over the world, in Europe, Africa, the Far East and South America."

A number of attacks or suspected plots against Jewish or Israeli targets in Europe, Latin America, Asia and elsewhere over recent decades have been attributed to Iran or its proxy groups, including a scare in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
last year that saw Israeli visitors encouraged to go home.

"The time has come to exact a price from Iran in a different way," Barnea said.

"Harming Israelis and Jews in any way — by proxy, by Iranians, or by Iranian weapons smuggled into Israel — will lead to activity against the Iranians who sent the bully boyz and also against the decision-makers, from the ground operators to the commanders who approved the operation, to the highest echelon, and I mean that," he said.

"These prices will be exacted with great precision in the depths of Iran, in the heart of Tehran," Barnea warned.

US said to transfer armored vehicles, weapons to PA to clamp down on West Bank terror
[IsraelTimes] Shipment facilitated by Jordan with approval from hardline Israeli government, which is hoping Ramallah will be able to regain control over Nablus, Jenin areas, according to report

The Paleostinian Authority reportedly received a shipment of armored vehicles and weapons from the United States, as the Biden administration and Israel look to assist Ramallah in regaining control over West Bank areas that have become hotbeds for terror activity.

Citing informed Paleostinian sources, the Jerusalem-based Paleostinian daily Al Quds said Monday that the shipment was facilitated by Jordan and will be used by several branches of the PA security forces.

Notably, the shipment was approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government, which includes representatives who have long criticized the transfer of weapons to the PA.

Netanyahu and Israel’s security establishment maintain a different approach, viewing PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
...aka Abu Mazen, a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial. While no Yasser Arafat, he has his own brand of evil, just a little more lowercase....
and his security forces as an important ally in combating terror in the West Bank.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
as the PA faces a legitimacy crisis over its failure to deliver Paleostinian statehood or even hold elections, its popularity has waned significantly, particularly in the northern West Bank where rivals have taken up weapons and challenged its authority.

Armed groups in Jenin and Nablus have carried out regular shooting attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians. Israel says the weakening of the PA has left it with no choice but to send its own soldiers into such cities in the northern West Bank to arrest those responsible for attacks and confiscate the growing amounts of weapons that are being stockpiled there.

The PA argues that such raids hamper its legitimacy further, and insists that Israel let it deal with the problem on its own.

After a two-day IDF operation in Jenin in July, Israel appeared to acquiesce, shrinking the frequency of such raids in order to give the PA space to operate.

A senior officer in the PA security forces confided later that month that Ramallah faces an uphill battle in curbing terror in the West Bank, where Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, and Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
have been recruiting impoverished youth to carry out attacks, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told The Times of Israel.

Nonetheless, Abbas directed his security chiefs in recent meetings to strike terror cells in the northern West Bank "with an iron fist," Al Quds reported.

While the animosity toward the gangs may have to do with Abbas’s public opposition to violence against Israel, the PA also stands to gain from the weakening of armed rival groups that challenge its authority.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of members of gangs in Jenin, Nablus, and Tulkarem have reportedly been arrested by the PA security forces this year.

Israel has also made an even larger number of arrests itself of Paleostinian terror suspects.

The State Department and Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the Al Quds report.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran building airport in southern Lebanon to attack Israelis, Gallant says
[IsraelTimes] Defense Minister Yoav Gallant claims facility, 20 km from Israel, to be used by Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
’for terror purposes’ against Israel; IDF chief: We must be ’more prepared than ever’ for ’extensive military conflict’

Speaking at an annual conference of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism Policy (ICT) at Reichman University in Herzliya, Gallant presented pictures of the airport, being built in the Qalaat Jabbour mountain region, which he said bore the fingerprints of Iran and its proxy terror group Hezbollah.

"In the pictures, you can see the Iranian flag flying over the runways, from which the ayatollah regime plans to operate against the citizens of Israel," Gallant said.

"In other words: the land is Lebanese, the control is Iranian, and the target is Israel," he added.

The claim could potentially re-inflame tensions heightened following provocations by the Iran-backed Hezbollah in recent months that include the terror group’s establishment of two tents in territory claimed by Israel — one of which was later removed — and camouflaged operatives patrolling the border in violation of a UN resolution, among other acts.

"If it comes to a conflict, we will not hesitate to activate the lethal force of the IDF. Hezbollah and Lebanon will pay heavy and painful prices," Gallant warned.

He also accused Iran of being behind terror operations in the West Bank and increasingly controlling Gazook terror groups Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. "Iran is the provider of money, knowledge, and guidance to Gazook terrorism," he said.

Speaking at a 50-year commemoration of the Yom Kippur War, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi echoed Gallant’s warning.

"Our enemies may be tempted to see an advantage in the multi-front threat to us. It is better for them to know that when Israel is threatened, it knows how to mobilize all its resources, put the differences aside — and attack," he said, referring to recent societal strife over proposed changes to the judiciary.

According to Rooters, citing a non-Israeli source, the airfield exposed by Gallant can be used by large drones, including armed unnamed aerial vehicles that were developed from Iranian plans. The source said drones that take off from the airstrip could carry out operations both domestically and beyond Lebanon’s border, though the former was more likely.

The source also said Hezbollah has devoted considerable resources to drone technology.

Gallant said Iran was continuing efforts to establish militia groups on Israel’s northern border, in addition to its arming of the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.

"The State of Israel, through the defense establishment, will not allow the establishment of a second Hezbollah in the Syrian Golan Heights, and the use of Syrian soil as a springboard for the transfer of [advanced] weapons to Hezbollah," Gallant said.

Israel has admitted to conducting hundreds of sorties against Iran-backed groups attempting to gain a foothold in Syria, over the last decade, as well as attacking arms shipments believed to be bound for those groups, chief among them Hezbollah.

Gallant also said Iran was working to destabilize the Iraq-Jordan border with militia groups, to potentially open up another front against Israel on its eastern border with Jordan.

#2  I'm sure the IDF would wait until it was almost ready to destroy it. More waste of limited resources that way.
