Tribunal rules UK professor unfairly fired for ‘anti-Zionist beliefs’ when he called Jewish students ‘pawns’
[IsraelTimes] An employment tribunal rules that a British sociology professor was unfairly dismissed when he was fired for calling Jewish students "pawns," and that his "anti-Zionist beliefs qualified as a philosophical belief and as a protected characteristic" under the Equality Act.

In remarks during a February 2021 lecture at the University of Bristol, David Miller called Israel "a violent mostly peaceful, racist, foreign regime engaged in ethnic cleansing" and referred to Jewish students who protested against his previous comments about Israel as Israel’s "pawns."

Firing him a few months later, the university said that it did not find Miller’s comments to be "unlawful speech," but that he was sacked because he "did not meet the standards of behavior we expect from our staff."

In comments to The Guardian, Miller’s legal representatives say the tribunal’s ruling is a "landmark decision," noting that it "establishes for the first time ever that anti-Zionist beliefs are protected in the workplace."

In a statement, the Union of Jewish Students decries the "dangerous precedent" of the ruling.

"This will ultimately make Jewish students less safe," the organization says.

Leila Gatagazheva remains in custody despite the reduced charges
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The investigation excluded one of the articles of accusation from the case of a native of Ingushetia, Leila Getagazheva; the young mother of two children is no longer charged with complicity in terrorist activities. However, Leila remains in the pre-trial detention center despite the arguments of her lawyers, human rights activists reported.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, on December 29, 2023, the Malgobek City Court, at the request of the defense, changed the preventive measure for Leila Gatagazheva from detention to house arrest for two months. A representative of the investigation insisted on extending the arrest, saying that if free, Gatagazheva could hide and put pressure on witnesses. On February 1, the court, at the insistence of the prosecutor, transferred Gatagazheva back to the pre-trial detention center.

Leila Gatagazheva, born in 2001, is a mother of two children, she was accused of aiding terrorist activities (Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and participating in an illegal armed formation on the territory of Syria (Part 2 of Article 208 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Leila's mother took her from Ingushetia to Syria at the age of 12 and married her there when she was 13 years old. She has already served five years in an Iraqi prison on a similar charge of working for Islamic State militants, said the defense, which is seeking to have the criminal case dropped.

The investigation dropped the charge against Leila of complicity in terrorist activities; now she is accused of only one article, participation in an illegal armed group, the Memorial Human Rights Center reported on February 7.

The investigation has no evidence for the charges, Gatagazheva’s lawyer Ramina Labazanova insists. The defense notes that from the moment of extradition, no investigative actions were carried out with Leila, although the intelligence officers supervising the case tried to put pressure on her in order to obtain a confession. However, Leila did not plead guilty.

In court, the defense pointed out that during the month spent under house arrest, Leila did not commit a single violation. The prosecutor, who demanded her transfer to a pre-trial detention center, did not provide reasoned arguments in favor of his position; the investigator, in turn, did not object to Leila’s continued stay under house arrest, but the court, against all odds, returned the young mother to custody.

“As of February 7, Gatagazheva’s defense has not received a ruling from the Supreme Court of Ingushetia, so it is still unclear what the judge was guided by when he changed the preventive measure,” says a publication on the human rights organization’s website.

Labazanova recalled that Leila had already served her sentence in Iraq for participation in a terrorist organization, but in Russia she is still charged with the same article (Part 2 of Article 208 of the Criminal Code, which provides for eight to fifteen years in prison)

Forbes France cancels ‘power women’ gala scheduled to feature Hamas apologist
[IsraelTimes] Citing security issues, the French edition of Forbes magazine cancels a gala event in honor of 40 notable women, including one who is under fire for justifying Hamas
...a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",...
’s October 7 massacre.

"Conditions are no longer conducive to guaranteeing the positive circumstances for holding the event," Forbes La Belle France tells Le Gay Pareeien yesterday.

The response mentions concern for the security of attendees but does not name Rima Hassan, a pro-Paleostinian activist whose inclusion on the list of women selected to be honored at the gala is generating controversy tied to her defense of Hamas.

The controversy follows her assertion in a November 29 interview that it is "true" that Hamas’s onslaught — in which the group murdered some 1,200 people and took another 253 hostage — is "legitimate." Israel’s right to defend itself is "false" and so is the viability of a two-state solution, according to the filmed statements by Hassan, a 31-year-old lawyer.

On X, Hassan writes that she is "furious" aboiut the cancelation: "Note that the pressures come predominantly from men who believe they’re omnipotent and possessing total license," she adds, thanking the "patriarchy." She provides a list of seven French Jews whom she calls "boomers who have not yet realized their time is up."

The list includes Jacques Essebag, a 57-year-old television presenter who last month protested Hassan’s inclusion on the Forbes list; Julien Bahloul, a 37-year-old journalist and activist for LGBTQ parents; and Patrick Klugman, a 46-year-old left-wing politician and lawyer.

Iran suspected in plot to kill Swedish Jews – report
[IsraelTimes] Iranian couple posing as Afghani immigrants colonists and reportedly working for IRGC were never charged but were reportedly deported in 2022

Swedish radio reported Tuesday that an Iranian couple, believed to be working for Iranian intelligence, were deported after being suspected in a plot to kill Swedish Jews.

According to an investigative report by Swedish Radio (SR), the couple, Mahdi Ramezani and Fereshteh Sanaeifarid, had applied for and been granted asylum in Sweden posing as Afghans.

Suspected of plotting to kill Swedish Jews, the couple were arrested in April 2021 on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a terrorist crime, SR reported.

Due to a lack of evidence, the two were never charged but they were reportedly deported in 2022 for posing a security risk.

"We have strong belief that they were here on a mission on behalf of Iran. They were seen here in Sweden as a very severe security threat. And that’s the reason why they were expelled, even if we couldn’t prosecute them," deputy chief prosecutor Hans Ihrman told the broadcaster.

While the investigation was classified, SR cited sources saying that the two were working on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC.

The couple of alleged agents reportedly identified three different targets, gathering addresses and photographs.

One of the suspected targets was believed to be Aron Verstandig, chair of the Official Council of Swedish Jewish communities, who told SR that he had received a call from the Swedish Security Service in 2021, informing him that he was believed to be a target.

"They basically told me that you have been named as one of the targets of a possible terror crime that involves murder," Verstandig said.

According to SR, the Iranian couple denies the allegations.

Californian accused of stealing secret U.S.-made missile tech to assist China- Chenguang Gong, U.S. citizen born in China-Anybody Notice A Pattern
[Axios] The Department of Justice announced charges in two separate cases Wednesday over allegedly "sophisticated schemes to transfer sensitive technology, goods, and information" to benefit the governments of China and Iran.

The big picture: In one case in California, Chenguang Gong, a 57-year-old U.S. citizen who was born in China, is accused of stealing trade secrets developed for use by the U.S. government to detect nuclear missile launches and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles, per a DOJ statement.

  • This technology "would be dangerous to U.S. national security if obtained by international actors," according to court documents filed in the case against the former engineer from San Jose.

  • Gong is accused of transferring over 3,600 files from the Los Angeles County research and development firm, where he worked from January-April 2023 — which allegedly included blueprints for infrared sensors "used in space-based systems to detect nuclear missile launches and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles."

Separately, two Iranian nationals in New York were charged with conspiring to export equipment used in the aerospace industry to Iran in relation to allegations of conspiracy to illegally export U.S. goods and technology without the required licenses.

  • Abolfazi Bazzazi, 79, and his son Mohammad Resa Bazzazi, 43, are accused of trying to evade U.S. sanctions and export laws by working to illegally procure goods and technology from U.S. companies for the Iranian government from 2008 to 2019.

  • "Our foreign adversaries use many tactics to gain access to critical U.S. technologies and innovation," Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said in a statement. "In this instance, it's alleged that the Bazzazis illegally attempted to export U.S. goods and technology to the Iranian government."

Zoom out: The cases come one year after the launch of the DOJ's Disruptive Technology Strike Force, which aims to prevent nation-state adversaries from stealing critical U.S. technologies.

  • "Today's charges against three additional defendants for seeking to illegally transfer U.S. software and semiconductor technology with military applications to benefit Iran and China highlight the critical importance of our fight against this national security threat," Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Jim Mancuso, assistant director of the global trade division at Homeland Security Investigations, told ABC News Wednesday that the governments of Iran, China and Russia were all "attempting to illegally acquire" American technology.

Thousands rally in Jerusalem in call to continue Gaza war until victory
[Ynet] Several thousand Israelis demonstrated Thursday in Jerusalem, urging the government not to yield to international pressure for a ceasefire, and to continue the Gaza war until Hamas is defeated.

Many demonstrators held up posters featuring images of fallen IDF soldiers alongside messages expressing their belief that they had entrusted Israel to pursue victory.

In their speech at the rally, Itzik and Noa Bonzel, the parents of Staff Sergeant Amit Bonzel, who fell in combat in the Gaza Strip, emphasized that "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the War Cabinet must heed the call and demand for total victory."

"Amit fell on December 6th. Just days before, he wrote in his journal, which was handed to us with his belongings, that he was proud to be a soldier in the IDF, and that 'the feeling is that we are in a historic operation, and we must finish it with a resounding victory.' We are committed to fulfilling Amit's and all the fallen soldiers' will."

The Bonzel couple addressed the families of the captives: "It is difficult for us to imagine the magnitude of pain, anxiety, and suffering you are enduring. We urge you in this tense and difficult time, amid negotiations for the release of the captives, not to see us as enemies but as brothers. Accept us, we fear that releasing more terrorists will harm Israel's deterrence. Do not view us as enemies when we demand to continue the fight and defeat Hamas. We are brothers."

Strip, to strengthen them as part of lessons learned from the October 7 attacks.

The equipment includes guns, ceramic vests, shoes and helmets.

"In the coming weeks more equipment will be provided, including weapons, medical and logistical equipment," a statement says.

The squads are also receiving intensified training.

Similar actions are being taken in border towns in northern Israel, largely evacuated amid ongoing attacks by Hezbollah.
