Thousands of people are fleeing violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo ...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material... as fighting intensifies between the Congolese army and the M23 gang.

Fighters reportedly surrounded the strategic town of Sake on Wednesday, a crucial step before reaching Goma, the capital of North Kivu. Capturing Sake would deal a logistical blow to Congolese soldiers.
The Congolese army and United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... peacekeepers have been struggling to contain M23’s advance. And as fighting continues, thousands of those who fled Sake have arrived in Bulengo, about 10km (six miles) west of Goma.
Thousands are "on the road right now", trying to escape the violence and get to Goma, Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani said, reporting from Bulengo on Wednesday.
"They have been fighting for a week right now, but this morning, again, rebels have tried to take over the main city," he explained.
It remains unclear whether the army or the rebels are now controlling the area, Uaykani added.
"The situation in Sake is very bad with heavy fighting between soldiers and M23 rebels. They have attacked with heavy guns and bombs fell on the city ... this is why we are leaving for Goma," Justin Musau, a displaced person from Sake, told Al Jazeera.
’TARGETING GOMA’
In a region already plagued with militia violence, M23 rebels launched a major new offensive in March 2022, sparking a conflict that has led to military intervention and mediation efforts by East African regional leaders. They brokered a ceasefire last year but it has been repeatedly violated.
Clashes between the rebels, army forces and self-defence groups that support them have escalated recently, forcing entire communities in Masisi and Rutshuru territories to flee to perceived areas of greater safety on the outskirts of Goma.
Meanwhile in Goma on Wednesday, a rocket landed near a university. There were no casualties from the attack, which blasted a crater into an area of open ground in the Lac Vert neighbourhood northwest of Goma, but it underscored the potential threat to the city of approximately two million people.
The DRC government this week promised that it would not let Goma, situated close to the border with Rwanda, fall into M23 hands. The gang briefly overran North Kivu province in 2012.
On Wednesday, M23 said in a statement that this was not its goal and described its actions as "defensive manoeuvres".
The DRC, Western powers and a UN expert group said the Tutsi-led rebel group is supported by Rwanda. Rwanda has denied all involvement, but the accusations have led to a diplomatic crisis in the region.
42,000 DISPLACED
Civilians have borne the brunt of the violence in the restive east, with many killed in bombings and reprisal attacks.
About 42,000 people have been displaced from Masisi alone since February 2, the UN’s humanitarian office OCHA said on Tuesday.
M23 made major advances in the town of Mweso last month, bringing the conflict even closer to Goma, which is about 100km (62 miles) away.

[Dhaka Tribune] A minor girl was reportedly raped by a madrasah teacher at Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at the Bashbaria Parijaan Begum Mohila Koumi Madrasa around 8pm.
Quoting the rape survivor’s family, Muksudpur cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ashraful Alam said that the girl’s family took her to the Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex after seeing blood on her dress.
"Police did not find any teacher in the madrasa on the night of the incident," the OC said.
The survivor’s father said that her daughter accused a madrasa teacher for this incident.
"She could not speak further as she lost consciousness," continued her father.
"How could the teacher rape my daughter? I want justice for my daughter," the victim’s father said.
Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex duty doctor Dr Dwip Saha confirmed the rape incident.
"The girl was sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for treatment as her physical condition deteriorated," said Dr Dwip Saha.

Five armed environmental protection agents were killed in festivities with police near Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, as violent mostly peaceful protests seeking the removal of Prime Minister Ariel Henry paralysed the country.
Haiti has been engulfed in unrest since Monday, with thousands of people in the city and the rest of the country demanding that Henry step down in line with a political agreement forged in 2022.
A police source said the five agents of the National Agency for Protected Areas (BSAP), an armed government bureau now in open rebellion, had been shot on Wednesday after refusing to drop their weapons and firing in the direction of police. Three other members of the agency were arrested.
According to an agreement concluded in December 2022 following the liquidation of President Jovenel Moise a year earlier, Henry was supposed to hold elections and then cede power to newly elected officials on February 7, 2024.
But Henry has remained in power, with an aide saying the prime minister intends to form a government of national unity.
The Western hemisphere’s poorest nation has been in turmoil for years, with armed gangs taking over parts of Haiti and unleashing brutal violence, leaving the economy and public health system in tatters.
The 2021 liquidation of Moise plunged the country further into chaos. No elections have taken place since 2016 and the presidency remains vacant.
The protests have been called by several opposition parties and joined by employees of the environmental agency.
On Tuesday evening, a cop shoppe in the northeastern province of Ouanaminthe came under attack, local media reported. Major roads and schools have been closed across the country since Monday.
The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, said on Wednesday that it was reinforcing its borders due to the violence.
[IsraelTimes] Two Jewish Israelis from Jerusalem have been detained on suspicion of spitting at and insulting a Christian clergyman in the Old City of Jerusalem, police say in a statement.
According to police, the incident occurred last Saturday and was reported to police, who tracked down and nabbed the two suspects — including one minor, age 17. The two were sent to house arrest as the investigation continues, police say, vowing zero tolerance for such incidents.

The Talmud contains centuries of rabbinic discussions (called Gemara) about Jewish law extracted from the Jewish bible (the Mishnah) — anything and everything can be found in it, including folklore and contemporaneous bits of history, generally with multiple viewpoints. Nor is the Talmud the final word on any subject, but rather is a jumping off point for discussions that continue to this day. Contrary to your ignorantly parochial view, Jesus Christ and Christianity are only a small part of the over 10,000,000 million words bound in thirty-eight volumes. But don’t feel bad: Islam is also mentioned, as half the world’s Jews lived under Moslem rule for over a thousand years, a history no less colourful than the Jews’ experience under Christendom.
