Fears that pirates are returning to seas off Somalia
[Garowe] The daring attack in December bore unsettling hallmarks of the piracy that once terrorized global shipping off eastern Africa: a cargo vessel hijacked, its crew taken to Somalia, and disappeared. The successful capture of the foreign vessel was the first by Somali pirates since 2017 and follows a spike in armed seaborne attacks around the Horn of Africa not seen in years.

Analysts caution that Somali piracy poses nowhere near the threat it did in 2011 when navies around the world had to deploy warships to beat back the scourge and restore order at sea.
Thinking of Pappy, who tracked piracy for us back then.
But this recent upswing in pirate activity has raised further concerns about marine security and shipping at a time when crucial trade corridors off Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...

Sudanese military leader sets terms for peace and political process
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
’s Deputy Military Leader, Lieutenant General Shams al-Din Kabashi, delivered a stark message on Thursday, declaring that no political process will be made unless a ceasefire is signed on the army’s terms.

In a firm address to the 18th Infantry Division in Kosti, Kabashi laid out the military’s conditions for ending the war. "We won’t lay down arms until a peace agreement on our terms is reached," he said.

Detailing the army’s requirement for peace, he underscored the evacuations of the residential areas and public and private facilities by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), adding they should gather at cantonment sites.

He further said there should be swift military arrangements to merge the RSF fighters in the army. He stressed that there will not be a merger process that will take ten or five years, as the paramilitary forces demanded before the war.

"We seek short-term military agreements on the terms of the Sudanese Armed Forces. If these terms are not accepted, the war will continue," he declared.

Despite mediation efforts led by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the United States in Jeddah and further attempts with the involvement of Egypt and the UAE in Manama, no ceasefire agreement has been reached between the warring parties in Sudan.

Kabbashi said that once an agreement is reached with the Rapid Support Forces in accordance with the army’s requirements, then a comprehensive political process can be moved on.

Here again, he defined the rules for an inclusive political process.

First, he urged political forces currently operating outside Sudan to return and engage in finding a solution. Without naming them, he criticized the political forces that provide a "political incubator" for the RSF.

Also reiterated that all the Sudanese must be involved in shaping the future government and political system regardless of their affiliation.

"This country belongs to everyone. All people are equal, and therefore, everyone must participate without exception in the process of reaching an agreement on the system of government or a political solution."

The Sudanese political forces call to exclude the former ruling National Congress Party of General al-Bashir, saying this party was anti-democratic and would obstruct the restoration of democracy in Sudan.

Kabashi’s statements mirror those of Malik Agar, the Vice-President of the Sovereign Council, who recently visited South Sudan to explain the government’s decision to suspend membership in the IGAD.

After his return to Port Sudan, Agar emphasized that resuming talks requires the fulfilment of specific commitments, such as the evacuation of civilians’ homes, as agreed upon in dMay 2023."

Sudan's military leader vows to crush RSF
[SUDANTRIBUNE] In a defiant address to troops, Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, vowed to continue the fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) until they are "completely defeated."

Speaking at the 3rd Infantry Division headquarters in Shendi, al-Burhan declared the ongoing conflict a "Battle of Dignity" and pledged that the armed forces "will not abandon their weapons" until the RSF is "eliminated."

He urged the RSF elements to "resort to the voice of reason" and evacuate the states of al-Jazirah and Khartoum and the other states in western and southern Sudan, emphasizing that "dialogue is impossible while you kill, plunder, and steal."

This statement comes a day after the Sudanese army announced strategic progress in Omdurman, claiming to have broken a months-long siege on the Engineers Corps.

The conflict between the army and the RSF began in April 2023, rapidly expanding to engulf Darfur and Kordofan. In December, the RSF took control of al-Jazeera State.

On February 15, Lieutenant General Shams al-Din Kabashi, Sudan’s Deputy Commander-in-Chief, outlined the military’s conditions for peace with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He declared that a ceasefire would only go into effect after the RSF fully evacuates residential areas, public facilities, and private firms, and regroups in designated cantonment sites.

Kabashi further emphasized that the political process, including an "intra-Sudanese dialogue encompassing all segments of the political forces without exception," would only commence after the successful conclusion of these military negotiations.

Nigeria's President Tinubu picks son-in-law Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo to run housing agency
[AFRICANEWS] Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has stirred controversy by appointing his son-in-law, Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, as the head of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

Ojo is married to Tinubu's eldest daughter, Folashade. This move marks the first instance of Tinubu selecting a relative for a federal government position.

The presidency justified the appointment, citing Ojo's decade-long experience in the housing and hospitality industries, along with his past role as a member of the House of Representatives.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
there has been a strong reaction on social media with some arguing that there were more qualified and deserving candidates than Mr Ojo.

"Blatant nepotism is a leadership weakness. Unfortunately, Nigerian leaders don't see it as a form of ethical failure," an x user wrote.

Some have come out to defend the naming of Mr Ojo for the role, saying his relationship with the president should not bar him from government jobs.

His appointment was part of the president's move to overhaul the management of the housing ministry.

The FHA, which falls under the ministry, is supposed to help deliver affordable homes across Nigeria.

With Senegal set to go back on election track, what's to become of Ousmane Sonko?
[AFRICANEWS] An announcement that hit the regime like a ton of bricks. After Parliament voted to back the postponement of the presidential election on February 5th, Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
's constitutional council ruled against the move on Thursday (Feb. 15).

The National Assembly voted to reschedule the vote for Dec. 15 and extended Macky Sall's rule set to end on April 2nd.

The ruling said the bill adopted by the national assembly was "contrary to the constitution". The decision delighted opposition candidates who filed a case to the council.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the opposition didn't obtain that the presidential poll be held as initially scheduled.

The 6-member panel of the constitutional council reckoned it was impossible to organize the election on February 25th.

The judges nevertheless ordered the competent authorities to reschedule the poll as soon as possible. This was met with mixed reactions.

It is important to highlight that the ruling of the Constitutional Council came hours after the liberation of some detainees commonly viewed as political prisoners.

Among them are members of citizen movements as well as supporters of now dissolved Pastef party which was headed by Ousmane Sonko.

The president is reportedly negotiating with Sonko an early release to ease the prevailing tension in Senegal.

Macky Sall on Friday (Feb. 16) pledged to organise presidential elections "as soon as possible" after the Constitutional Council overruled his decision to delay the Feb.25 vote.

Nigeria's currency has fallen to a record low as inflation surges
[AFRICANEWS] Nigerians are facing one of the worst economic crises in West Africa in years triggered by rising inflation rate, following monetary policies that have dipped the local currency to an all-time low against the US dollar, provoking anger, and protests across the country.

The latest government statistics released Thursday showed that the inflation rate in January rose to 29.9%, its highest since 1996, mainly driven by food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The naira itself further plummeted to 1,524/1$ on Friday, reflecting a 230% loss of value in the last year.

It worsens an already bad situation, further eroding incomes and savings while squeezing millions already struggling with hardship due to government reforms that saw the removal of gas subsidies, resulting in gas prices tripling and transport fares spiking.

With a population of more than 210 million people, Nigeria is not just Africa’s most populous country but also the continent’s largest economy.

Its GDP is driven mainly by the service sector, such as information technology and banking, followed by the industry sector, including manufacturing and processing businesses and then agriculture.

"Everything is too expensive; they should help us," said Obiajulu Blessing, a mother of three who came to the market to get some food for her family in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos.

The challenge is that the economy is far from sufficient for Nigeria’s booming population, relying heavily on imports to meet the daily needs of its citizens from cars to cutleries.

Therefore, it is easily affected by external shocks such as the parallel foreign exchange market that determines the price of goods and services.

The economy itself is heavily dependent on crude, so when crude prices plunged in 2014, authorities continued to use foreign reserves to stabilize the naira amid multiple exchange rates.

The country continued to subsidize fuel using scarce external reserves while shutting down the borders in a push for self-sufficiency and limiting access to the dollar in the official market for importers of certain items. As a result, food prices were rising as a parallel market for the US dollar boomed.

For trader, Adeniyi Bisola, there’s too much hunger.

"For some when they eat in the morning, they only get to eat at night while others do not even have access to food," she said.

Shortly after taking the reins of power, President Bola Tinubu took bold steps to fix the ailing economy and attract investors.

He announced the end of the costly decades long gas subsidies which the government said were no longer sustainable, while the country's multiple exchange rates were unified to allow market forces to determine the rate of the local naira against the dollar, which in effect devalued the currency.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
analysts say there were no adequate measures to provide alternatives for citizens and the government doesn’t seem to know what to do.

"This is quite unfortunate because somehow it seems like the government hasn't been able to get a handle of it, and it has been increasing, and it keeps increasing right now," says strategy consultant Dipo Oyewole.

President Tinubu himself has directed the release of food items such as cereals from government reserves among other palliatives to help cushion the effect of economic hardship.

The government has also said it plans to set up a commodity board to help regulate the soaring prices of goods and services.

It is far worse for some in conflict zones in northern Nigeria where farming communities are no longer able to cultivate what they eat as they are forced to flee violence.

Pockets of protests have broken out in the past weeks, but security forces have been quick to quell them, even making arrests in some cases.

In the economic hub of Lagos and other major cities, there are fewer cars and more legs on roads as commuters are forced to trek to work.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Stavropol activist linked the search with a statement in support of Lada-Rus
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Activist of the movement “Building the Future Ourselves” Stalina Erlenbach reported that during the search the security forces were looking for extremist materials from her, and connected the search with her demand to nominate Svetlana Lada-Rus as a candidate for the presidency of Russia.

As the "Caucasian Knot" reported, on February 15, searches were conducted at the activists of the radical movement "Building the Future Ourselves" Maria Karnaukhova in Stavropol and at Stalina Erlenbach in Nevinnomyssk.

The movement “Building the Future Ourselves” was previously called the “Volya Party”, the “National Union for the Revival of Russia”, the “Union of Wives and Mothers of Military Personnel” (also referred to as the Council of Mothers and Wives,” note of the “Caucasian Knot” ). SOTA reported on February 15.

During searches, supporters of the “Build the Future Ourselves” movement were searched for extremist materials, said activist Stalin Erlenbach. "At 07.00 on the morning of February 15th, the Center for Emergency Control officers came to our home with a search. It all started when we heard a crash at the gate, my son came out to them, found out that they had come to me, and called me. It turned out that these were the Center for Emergency Monitoring officers. They gave me read the court order about the search. Immediately they started filming me, I wanted to take a photo too, but they didn’t let me. I suggested they talk through the fence, but the security officer began to climb over the fence, and then my son opened the gate,” she told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

According to her, the security forces found nothing. "They entered the house, tried to communicate in a raised voice, shout, but I made a remark and said that I could hear well. They took the phone, did not allow me to call or write to anyone. The same thing with my son. We could not contact anyone, inform, what's going on. We walked around the rooms, searched, but found nothing. I don't have anything extremist or prohibited. We just want order in the country and wrote a statement demanding that Lada-Rus come to power. The security forces filled out a protocol, wrote, that they didn’t find anything and left,” the activist said.

The website of the movement “Building the Future Ourselves” contains a video from December 2023 with the title “Russia will nominate Lada-Rus for president,” in which members of the movement nominate her as a presidential candidate.

The searches are related to the civic position of the activists, says blogger Alina Lushavina. “As far as I know, they filed the same statement as I did against Putin, that he could be a foreign agent,” she told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent. In her opinion, this was the reason for the search. She noted that Maria Karnaukhova was also not detained after the search.

An expert at the SOVA Research Center, Mikhail Akhmetyev, emphasized that supporters of Lada-Rus have always been active offline. “I don’t know the exact number of supporters of Svetlana Peunova (Lada-Rus) and, moreover, I’m not ready to say whether there are many or few of them (or anyone else) specifically in the Stavropol region. But this is definitely not only an Internet phenomenon - quite the contrary, they were always active offline. As far as I remember, their congresses consistently attracted several hundred people.
Golly.
Recently there have been more or fewer of them due to the attempts of the Peunovites to promote themselves as the “Council of Mothers and Wives” on the topic of protecting the rights of military personnel - I don’t know exactly ", he told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

On August 9, 2016, the Supreme Court of Russia upheld the claim of the Ministry of Justice for the liquidation of the all-Russian political party "Volya" in connection with the dissemination of extremist materials. Leader Svetlana Peunova (Lada-Rus) was put on the international wanted list and arrested in absentia. Criminal cases have been initiated against her for fraud (Article 159 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm (Part 3 of Article 111, Article 159 of the Criminal Code of Russia).

Akhmetyev noted that supporters of Lada-Rus during the Palestinian-Israeli conflict declared an anti-Semitic position. “They have included this war in their traditional conspiracy theories, which have an anti-Semitic connotation. That is, they believe that behind all major events in the world there is a secret world government of globalists, that it was the globalists who provoked Hamas to attack Israel.
Someone has read the Russian classic, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion...
And ultimately In general, globalists want to establish a new world order without religions, races, chip everyone, and so on,” Akhmetyev described the worldview of Lada-Rus supporters.
...the Protocols and the more fetid corners of the internet.
Chairman of the Stavropol Union of Journalists Vasily Balditsyn noted that he does not know supporters of the “Building the Future Ourselves” movement in the region. “I don’t know any representatives of this organization in Stavropol. They are not particularly popular. I know a lot of “movements” in our public sphere, but here I haven’t even seen any “movements”,” he told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

According to him, in the Stavropol region as a whole there are no organizations that are considered radical. “Now they don’t exist at all. Apart from various underground comrades, we don’t have any radical organizations or movements. All of them that, relatively speaking, were raging, dispersed and became quiet,” he noted.

New Pindi Commissioner denies rigging claims, calls for thorough probe
[GEO.TV] The newly-appointed Rawalpindi Commissioner, Saif Anwar Jappa, rejected all the accusations made by the former commissioner regarding irregularities in the February 8 general elections. He clarified that the commissioner's role in the polls was only for coordination.

Liaquat Ali Chatha, the former Commissioner of Rawalpindi Division, resigned, admitting that he contributed to widespread rigging in the general elections in the garrison city, causing injustice to the people.

"I officially took charge as Rawalpindi commissioner today, February 7," mentioned Jappa. He addressed a presser at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium alongside District Returning Officers (DROs) from Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, and Chakwal districts. Jappa was assigned an additional charge after Chatha stepped down as commissioner of Rawalpindi.

Emphasising the fairness and accuracy of the recent elections, the District Returning Officer (DRO) for Rawalpindi assured that the elections were conducted with complete transparency and without any external pressure on them. Brushing aside the former commissioner's allegations, DC Chakwal ruled out any undue pressure during the elections.

Jappa called for a thorough inquiry to investigate the claims of rigging by the former commissioner. Regarding the rigging accusations, he said, "I deny the allegations made by the former commissioner and urge an elaborate inquiry into the matter."

Earlier, Jappa chaired an emergency meeting with DROs from Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, and Murree at the DRO office. The meeting aimed to assess the current situation following Chatha's allegations.

A plurality of Israelis believe that, if forced to choose, the country should opt to dismantle Hamas over getting back the hostages held in Gaza, according to the Jewish People Policy Institute’s monthly Israel society index poll.

The survey found 40% of Israelis would prioritize eradicating Hamas, with 32% preferring the release of the hostages. The question apparently proved difficult for many to answer, with 28 percent of respondents saying they could not say at all.

Among Jews, the percentage of people who believed destroying Hamas had to be prioritized (47%) was almost double the number of those who believed freeing the hostages should take precedence (25%).

The sentiment could also be seen across most religiosity levels. In all religious groups but one, 20% of respondents or less chose to prioritize the hostages over dismantling Hamas. Among secular people, 51% said they would choose hostages over dismantling Hamas.

The position of Arab Israelis was entirely different, with 61% saying they would choose to return hostages over destroying Hamas and only 11% saying the opposite.

#1  Saudi Arabia has made it clear time and time again that it would not establish diplomatic ties with Israel until the recognition of an independent Paleostinian state.

And Israel needs diplomatic ties with Saudia (a country that won't exist 10 years from now) because?

#2  What utter nonsense. Without formal diplomatic ties Israel and Saudi Arabia have been quietly working and doing business together for over a decade, and they were ready to be the part of the second round of President Trump’s Abraham Accords. This is just souk behaviour — they think they can get more in trade because the Biden administration is putting its thumb on the scales.

Hamas says it won't accept anything less than 'complete' cessation of hostilities
A complete non-starter, as Bibi has said. It seems Hamas has put itself in a corner that only Allah himself could make turn out right, because Hamas cannot admit they made a fatal mistake by invading on October 7th.

Top Malaysian court rules more than a dozen state Sharia laws invalid
[BenarNews] Malaysia’s top court on Friday ruled that more than a dozen Islamic laws in Kelantan state were unconstitutional because they intruded on federal authority, in a decision that some conservative Moslem critics say could undermine the country’s Sharia legal system.

In an 8-1 judgment, the Federal Court declared "void and invalid" 16 laws under the state’s criminal code, including sodomy, sexual harassment, intoxication, incest and defiling or destroying a place of worship.

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said the verdict was not about the role of Islam or Sharia courts in Malaysia, but whether state legislatures had authority to pass laws listed under federal jurisdiction.

Malaysia has a dual-track legal system, where Sharia courts interpret and apply Islamic law and secular courts rule on civil and criminal matters. Sharia laws are passed by state governments and secular laws by Parliament.

The court ruled that only two of the 18 laws in dispute fell within the jurisdiction of Kelantan’s Sharia criminal code: selling or giving away children and words capable of breaking peace.

Outside the courtroom, lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid, who filed the legal challenge with her daughter, said the decision showed states must exercise caution when using their legislative powers.

"It also shows that the federal constitution is supreme," she said at a presser. "It’s for the well-being of all [Malaysians] and has nothing to do with the doctrine of Islam, as decided by the court.

"It concerns the competency of the state legislative assembly. I do not do this for myself but for all Malaysians, even when I was completely vilified, scorned, and condemned."

About 70% of the Malaysian population are Malays, all of whom are considered Moslem. Ethnic Chinese comprise 22.8% of the population, and ethnic Indians make up 6.6%.

Kelantan, a rural state in northeast Malaysia near Thailand, is governed by the hardline Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), which advocates for a stricter interpretation of Islamic law.

Thousands of Moslems had gathered outside the courthouse in the administrative capital of Putrajaya Friday morning ahead of the decision. Amid chants of "Allahu Akbar", opposition leaders from the Perikatan Nasional coalition also made an appearance.

In response to the decision, Kelantan deputy chief minister Mohammed Fadzli Hassan said his team would seek an audience with the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, to discuss the matter.

"We have formed a committee to study the decision made and we will scrutinize it. This won't stop here," he told news hounds.

"This is a concern not just for the Kelantan government; it affects all states and governments."

Immediately after the ruling, Malaysia’s Religious Affairs Minister Mohd Na’im issued a statement saying the position of the "Sharia court in Malaysia is steadfast, with its status guaranteed as clearly stated in the Constitution."

"Several adjustments to existing plans will be done in line with this judgment," he said. "We will implement all existing avenues and opportunities to empower the Sharia courts."Salim Bashir, a former president of the Malaysian Bar, said the Federal Court decision addressed the issue of overlapping of jurisdictions between civil and Sharia courts for criminal offenses in Kelantan.

"It doesn't mean that all state Sharia-promulgated criminal laws will be rendered otiose or displaced; it still remains to be tested in every given case on a case-by-case basis," he told BenarNews.
