-Lurid Crime Tales-
Don't Ignore Race in Christopher Lane's Murder
Australian Christopher Lane was killed on Monday in Oklahoma by three teens, one of whom has said they were just "bored." The right is complaining that the media is making nothing of the fact that two of the teens were black whereas Lane was white, as opposed to the massive alarm sounded in cases such as white (or white-ish) George Zimmerman killing black Trayvon Martin. And again the cry was heard that there is more "black-on-black" or "black-on-white" crime than "white-on-black," and that young black men are in fact more of a problem than people like Zimmerman.

The numbers don't lie: young black men do commit about 50% of the murders in the U.S. We don't yet know whether the attack on Lane was racially motivated, nor can we know whether the three black boys who attacked a white boy on a Florida school bus recently would not have done the same to a black kid. (Critics took Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to task for not condemning the violence.) But hardly uncommon are cases such as the two black guys who doused a white 13-year-old with gasoline and lit him on fire, saying "You get what you deserve, white boy" (Kansas City, Mo.) or 20 black kids who beat up white Matthew Owens on his porch "for Trayvon"

So, it's just fake to pretend that the association of young black men with violence comes out of thin air. Young black men murder 14 times more than young white men. If the kinds of things I just mentioned were regularly done by whites, it'd be trumpeted as justification for being scared to death of them.
Does this mean that if we took the guns away from young black men we could cut the gun violence rate by 50%? Wow, we only have to disarm about 5% of the population. The gun grabbers have their heads in rectal defilade.
It's more important to disarm the NRA and the Tea Party than to disarm the gang-bangers: the latter can't lead a revolution...

Middle School Students Attacked In Robbery Attempt At Gary Bus Stop
[CHICAGO.CBSLOCAL] A group of people tried to rob middle school students at a bus stop in Gary.
This sort of thing didn't happen when we had prayer in the schools.
A 14-year-old says a grown woman punched her in the face while she was waiting for the school bus this morning.

A group of Lake Ridge Middle School students were near the intersection after 7 a.m. when they say two men and two women got out of a black car and attacked.

The motive? Robbery.

"They came up to us asking us for our lunch money and asked for money and electronics. They said if we don't listen to them someone is going to get hurt," the 14-year-old said.

"A child shouldn't have to worry about adults beating up on them. It's just sickening," said Shaminka Reed, a mother of one of the children.

A neighbor's surveillance camera captured shots of the car and the wounded victim running for help.

"She came walking to her house. She was covered in blood," said Benjamin Kitchens, a neighbor.

Another neighbor followed the suspects.

"I busted a u-turn right here in the driveway. Turned around and I followed him down 24th, he didn't know I was following him, followed them lost them in the apartment complex on Clark Road," said Tammy Fischer, a witness.

The family took a look at the video tonight, grateful neighbors were ready to help when their children needed it.

Wednesday night, Lake Ridge Schools sent a letter about the crime urging parents to go to bus stops with their children.

#1  Ah...Gary.
I fondly remember the high school football games.
In the cool autumn nights we would get off the student fan busses and stampede to the concession stands for corn dogs, ice cream and cokes(BYO).
After the dog(with mustard!) was downed, the 6in pointed wooden dowel it rode on went up the sleeve or in a back pocket for ready access.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Worcester woman fights for the right to bare breasts
On the streets of Worcester, some residents have done a double take, questioning whether they really saw a woman walking or biking around town topless.

"That's me," said Stacey, who did not want to have her last name published. "I'm trying to promote topless equality."

In early July, Stacey stepped outside her Worcester home fully dressed below the belt, but without a bra or shirt.

"I've been a nudist for years and years," she said. "I started being an activist about a month ago."

She began going topless in Worcester when she became the spokeswoman for the Massachusetts chapter of Topless Equality. "Speaking out for Topless Equality is simply a fundamental right that I will shout from every rooftop that I am allowed to," she wrote on organization's website. She believes that if woman can legally go topless it will reduce sexism, adding "as we see a gain in allowing a woman's right to be and live topless, you will see more body acceptance and healthy women."

While she admits the prospect was a bit "scary at first" she said that safety is a concern for women, regardless of their clothing, or lack thereof. "Any woman walking anywhere has to be careful."

Primarily, her activism takes place through everyday moments, striking up conversation about her campaign when possible. While walking or biking through Worcester, she carries business cards to hand out. The cards read "I Support Topless Equality for Women" with a link to the Mass. chapter of Topless Equality and her twitter handle. The flip side of the card provides a brief definition for the movement.

UPS to drop spouses from insurance coverage due to Obamacare

#3  The University of Virginia said Wednesday that it will stop offering health insurance to some employees' spouses because of rising costs under ObamaCare.

The university said the Affordable Care Act will add $7.3 million to its healthcare costs next year. It indicated that it could face additional costs in the future because of the law's tax on especially generous insurance policies.

In an effort to cut costs, UVA's healthcare benefits will no longer be available to some employees' spouses.

Swiss Retailer Backtracks on Bull's Pizzle Dog Snack
[An Nahar] Swiss supermarket giant Migros has backtracked on a decision to stick a no-nonsense "bull's penis" label on a brand of dog chews, it said Tuesday.

While the dog snack is made from bull penises, it was previously tagged with a fig-leaf label identifying the product as "bull nerves".

Migros spokeswoman Martina Bosshard told Agence La Belle France Presse that the retailer faced negative feedback from customers when it switched to the franker, and more accurate, label.

Confirming a report in Swiss daily 20 minutes, Bosshard said Migros decided to go back to the less explicit labelling, despite the fact that "no one returned" products with the bull penises label.

The "Max" brand chews, which feature a cute beagle on the packet, are popular among dog owners in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
The packets pitch the snacks as "100-percent natural" and a "treat to chew on with pleasure for a long time".

Australian Lodges Fork in Penis for Sexual Pleasure
[An Nahar] Shocked doctors had to perform emergency surgery on a man in the Australian capital Canberra after he lodged a 10 centimeter (four-inch) steel fork inside his penis for sexual pleasure.
Ow. Simply ow.
Hate to tell you this, but it's big news only if it was sideways...
The bizarre incident was considered so unusual that it was written up as a case report in a recent issue of the International Journal of Surgery.
"You guys gotta hear about this one!"
According to the paper "An Unusual Urethral Foreign Body," the 70-year-old arrived at the emergency department of Canberra Hospital with a bleeding penis "following self-insertion of a fork into the urethra to achieve sexual gratification".
"Is that a fork in your pee-pee, sir?"
"Yes. Yes! YESSS!"

It said he had put the dining fork inside 12 hours prior "for autoerotic stimulation" but it became stuck.
"[Sigh] That was fun. Painful, but fun. I guess I'd better put the fork back in the drawer with the others... [Tug!]... Hmmm... [Tug!]... Ow."
Baffled doctors called it a rare and unusual incident. The fork was not visible and "multiple retrieval methods were contemplated".
"What do you think, Doctor Casey?"
"I think we may have to blast. What do you think, Doctor Kildare?"
"Tongs and motor oil."
"Motor oil?"
"10W-40, at least."
"Good idea."

Success was achieved using forceps and "copious lubrication" and the man, who was put under general anaesthesia, was sent home.
Works every time.
It did not say when the incident occurred.

"The motives for insertion of a variety of objects are difficult to comprehend," the doctors said.
"Especially if you're male."
"This case warrants discussion given the great management challenge faced by the oddity and infrequency with which a fork is encountered in the penile urethra."
"Infrequency" = "Never heard that one before"
The paper said only a handful of foreign body insertions into the lower urinary tract had been detailed over the last nine years.
"The stilton cheese was perhaps the most unusual, but this one was right up there."
It went on to cite medical literature listing other strange objects found inside parts of the body, including needles, pencils, wire, toothbrushes, batteries, light bulbs, thermometers and plants and vegetables.
Like I was saying...
I'm gonna go lie down.
"The practice manifests primarily during states of pathological masturbation, substance abuse and intoxication and as a result of psychological compounders," the case study said.

Indian state bans black magic after activist's death
[Dawn] An Indian state government on Wednesday passed legislation banning superstition and black magic, an official said, a day after a prominent champion of the bill was rubbed out.

Atheist Narendra Dabholkar, who for years campaigned for such a law, was killed on Tuesday by two gunnies on cycle of violences as he was taking his morning walk in Pune city in the western state of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra's cabinet on Wednesday approved the law which was first mooted back in 1995, a state official told AFP.

"An ordinance will be promulgated in the next two days," the official said, declining to be named. An ordinance is a temporary law that requires approval by the state assembly approval to become permanent.

News on the legislation came amid a strike in Pune on Wednesday to protest at Dabholkar's killing, which saw 90 per cent of the city's businesses and shops close, police commissioner Gulabrao Pol told AFP.

"There is no progress" on the investigation into his death, he added, saying no arrests had been made and the motive had not been determined.

Further protests were held in the state capital Mumbai.

The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil Practices and Black Magic Bill was designed to outlaw several exploitative activities by charlatans preying on the vulnerable.

Details of the new ordinance were not yet available but an earlier draft bill proposed bans on beating a person to exorcise ghosts and on raising money by claiming to work miracles.

Dabholkar, who founded the Committee for the Eradication of Blind Faith two decades ago, encountered opposition over the bill from Hindu nationalists who feared it could be used to curb religious freedoms.

In an interview with AFP two years ago, the campaigner rejected charges that such a bill was anti-religion. "In the whole of the bill, there's not a single word about God or religion. Nothing like that. The Indian constitution allows freedom of worship and nobody can take that away," he said.

"This is about fraudulent and exploitative practices."

Superstitious beliefs are rampant in fast-developing and officially secular India, where Hinduism dominates but a diverse range of ethnic groups and religious practices co-exist.

Sanal Edamaruku, another leading anti-superstition activist, said in comments Tuesday the Maharashtra bill had been "very much diluted" since its first creation, to appease various groups.

Afghanistan
Afghan Female Stars Defy Clerics' Pressure
[AnNahar] Judges on TV talent shows always attract controversy for making or breaking the careers of desperate wannabes -- but for Aryana Sayeed, the job is also a fight for Afghanistan's future.

The glamorous 28-year-old singer is a judge on worldwide hit series "The Voice" that launched in Kabul in May, immediately attracting huge audiences and an array of angry critics.

As a symbol of female independence in a strictly conservative Islamic country, Aryana receives regular death threats and lives in fear of being kidnapped by religious Death Eaters.

On the set outside Kabul where the show is filmed for private channel Tolo TV, armed guards outnumber contestants and have machine guns held at the ready.

"I'm here to make a difference for women," Aryana told AFP. "I want women to have rights, to talk freely, to walk freely, to be able to go shopping when they wish.

"I'm not saying that they have to take their clothes off, or even remove their head scarves. Freedom is being able to live as a human being."

As contestants belt out songs that could propel them to stardom, Aryana nods encouragingly and sways gently - acutely aware that her every move is studied across the country.

"I have to be so careful as they're constantly checking what you are doing, what you are saying, even how you laugh," she said.

"I said 'I love you' to one contestant because he was so good. He was 15-years-old. Even that caused trouble. People asked 'What did she say? This is not something normal in Afghanistan'."

Aryana was born in Afghanistan before moving to Pakistain as a child and then to Europe. She now divides her time between Kabul and London.

As one of Afghanistan's biggest stars, she has taken a stance against Islamic holy mans who insist that women should remain at home and never earn a living of their own.

In one of her songs, Aryana sings "Because I am a woman, I am a slave" against a background of images of women in burqas.

"Women have no rights whatsoever here, so I want to be an example as somebody who is constantly fighting," she said, admitting that her beliefs mean that security concerns dominate her life.

"I have a lot of trouble online, receiving messages from people telling me that they will kill me or that they'll put acid in my face. They tell me to stop singing.

"Kidnapping is something to keep in mind all the time. You'd rather die than be kidnapped. I don't get out a lot."

One young Afghan actress, Benafsha, was stabbed to death last year, and some religious hardliners recently declared a jihad against popular reality shows based on Western hits such as "The X-Factor" and "Pop Idol".

One politician calling for the programs to be banned branded them "blasphemous and vulgar".

"Islam cannot accept girls and women who become singers, dancers or film actresses," Enayatullah Baleegh, a leading holy man in Pul-e-Khishti mosque in central Kabul, told AFP.

"Our culture and traditions do not allow it. I prefer a woman to wear fabric that covers her body with only her eyes and hands visible. If girls and women choose this life (of singing and acting), it will degrade their dignity."

Actress Fereshta Kazemi, who was born in Kabul but grew up in the United States and returned to Afghanistan only last year, accepts that her profession is often equated with sexual availability.

"Actresses are considered by some to be hookers," the 33-year-old told AFP. "My private life outside work is not respected. I get crazy phone calls from people because they think I am available.

"After many months here, it has become very difficult. I feel that I'm being objectified and not human, because I'm choosing a job that is about putting myself out there.

For sociologist Barayalai Fetrat, a lecturer at Kabul University, the challenges that Aryana and Fereshta face exemplify how Islamic conservatives are pushing to regain ground since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 particularly with NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
troops due to leave in 2014.

"As foreign troops pull back, traditionalists who have been largely silent for the past decade -- and who still have strong backing in society -- are reappearing to attack the gains that Afghan women have achieved," he said.

"They are now boldly attacking the rights of women to work in offices, to become artists, or even the right to education.

"The women who have been pioneers in the fight for their rights are now facing more and more pressure and are fearful for their future. Artists like Aryana and Fereshta are the primary targets."

But Fereshta does find some reasons to stay optimistic despite the gloomy outlook and mounting challenges.

After her performance in recently-released film "The Icy Sun", which tackles the taboo subject of rape, she said she was surrounded by admiring fans.

"There were all these girls who came to kiss me. They were happy, because I had made a film that speaks honestly about the situation of women."

[An Nahar] Somalia's government vowed Wednesday to deliver justice in the case of a local woman who alleged she was gang raped by African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
troops and Somali soldiers.

"My team and I are committed to getting to the bottom of this case, and all other allegations of sexual violence," Somalia's minster for human development, Maryan Qasim, said in a statement Wednesday.

"We want perpetrators of crimes to be brought to justice and to build a society where the rights of every citizen are protected."

Qasim, the head of a government team probing the case, distanced herself from an audio recording in Somali media in which she appeared to angrily criticize rape victims for publicizing their cases in the press.

Instead, she said she had been "misquoted and misrepresented", and that she had instead been stressing the need to "protect each and every rape victim's identity".

"Rape in all its forms is totally unacceptable," Qasim added. "The government cannot tolerate such incidents, no one should be allowed to violate the rights of Somali women."

Late last week a Somali woman alleged she was kidnapped by three soldiers from the national army, blindfolded and forced into a car, before being handed over to African Union troops to be repeatedly raped.

The unnamed woman, in her late 20s with a young baby, told Somali media that she was unconscious during the attack and says she does not know how many men raped her.

Tribe Members Freed after Darfur Kidnap
[An Nahar] Twenty-four people have been freed in Sudan's Darfur region, four days after being kidnapped by a rival Arab tribe following deadly festivities, official media said on Wednesday.

The Maaliya tribe members kidnapped by the Rezeigat have been released "in response to efforts of mediation and the government," the state SUNA news agency said.

Dozens died in fighting between the Maaliya and Rezeigat in East Darfur on August 10 and 11.

"The kidnappers asked for a ransom to release the people," said Ali Al-Tahir Sharif, the head of Fardus district, outside the East Darfur state capital Ed Daein.

He was quoted by the state-linked Sudanese Media Center, which is close to the security apparatus. The report did not specify whether any money was handed over.

Libya prevents tanker entering oil terminal as strike heats up
[OMANTRIBUNE] Libya's navy has prevented a tanker from "illegally entering" Al Sedra oil terminal in the east of the country, the army's general staff said on Tuesday, as protests paralysed several ports.

"Patrol boats from the Libyan navy stopped an oil tanker sailing in Libyan territorial waters from entering Al Sedra port" on Monday, it said, cited by official news agency LANA.

"The ship, bearing the name Wael, tried on several occasions to enter the port but was prevented," the army said.

It was unclear who had chartered the vessel.

The Libyan navy said in a statement on Tuesday that it would monitor ships off the coast near the oil terminals of Al Sedra, Ras Lanouf and Brega.

"Ships that are not duly bound by contracts with the NOC (National Oil Company), which alone is authorised to sign petroleum export contracts, will be forbidden from loading crude oil and will be ordered to leave," it warned.

"In case of refusal to obey orders, the ship will be stormed and taken to the nearest port," the Libyan navy added.

One oil trading source said he had received emails offering Libyan oil outside of state NOC's control.

The government is locked in a stand-off with striking oil installation guards.

Authorities have threatened to use force to prevent the sale of any oil that does not go through the proper channels.

Libya's struggle with oil exports disruption intensified on Tuesday with festivities at one port and moves to head off attempts by strikers to sell oil themselves at the largest crude terminal.

The head of Libya's Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG), Edris Abokhamada, said he had contacted the defence ministry for reinforcements after festivities at the Zueitina oil port, which has been shut since mid-July.

"The protesters are still inside the port but the citizens want them to leave," Abokhamada said, "The Zueitina port protesters fired on civilians when they asked them to leave - one is injured".

Tunisia Rights Groups Urges Release of Ben Ali Minister
[An Nahar] A Tunisian rights group on Wednesday called for the release of Ridha Grira, the last defense minister of ousted dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who is suffering from cancer.

Detained since September 2011, Grira is being prosecuted for his part in a number of corruption cases linked to the Ben Ali regime, which was tossed in a popular uprising in 2011.

The Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights said that due to Grira's poor health, releasing him "cannot be an obstacle to his prosecution."

"We urgently call on the judicial authorities to grant him bail during this critical phase in his life."

It said the Mornaguia prison, in a suburb of the capital, where Grira is being held, does not have the facilities to provide the necessary treatment.

C. Africa Disarmament Operation Sparks Clashes, 11 Dead
[An Nahar] At least 11 people were killed and 35 injured in festivities that erupted when the new Central African Republic government tried to disarm supporters of ousted leader Francois Bozize, hospital sources said Wednesday.

Six bodies were taken to the Amitie hospital in the capital Bangui and five to another community hospital, the sources told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Fourteen people were admitted to Amitie with injuries, and 21 to the community hospital, some of whom were in a serious condition.

The disarmament operation took place in the Bangui neighborhoods of Boy-Rabe and Boeing, near the airport, a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"There was small and heavy arms fire unleashed by former Seleka fighters. There were festivities in some places, but it is difficult to assess what happened," the source said.

Boy-Rabe is considered a stronghold for supporters of Francois Bozize, the president who was tossed on March 24 by rebel coalition Seleka, led by Michel Djotodia, who last Sunday was inaugurated as the country's new president. Bozize is currently in La Belle France.

Bangui prosecutor Alain Tolmo confirmed that 28 gunnies had been jugged by Djotodia's Seleka fighters as part of a "fight against impunity".

Witnesses said gunnies looted freezers, electronics, cars and even mattresses during the operation.

Security Minister General Nouradine Adam and other top defense and security officials met Monday with leaders of the Boy-Rabe neighborhood to order them to name those who were in possession of weapons.

In April, a similar operation in Boy-Rabe and in neighboring Kassin by the forces of the new regime left 20 people dead.

Since the collapse of the Bozize regime, the country has lived in a "permanent climate of fear", according to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...

An African peacekeeping force has begun deploying in the capital Bangui, but no peacekeepers in the force that will eventually number 2,500 soldiers and 1,000 coppers are stationed outside of the capital.

A U.N. report said that Djotodia's Seleka fighters, many of whom have not been paid in months, were to blame for much of the chaos and that the group's hierarchy is doing little to stop them.

It listed "arbitrary arrests and detention, sexual violence against women and kiddies, torture, rape, assassinations, recruitment of child soldiers and attacks, committed by uncontrolled Seleka elements and unidentified gangs throughout the country."

Europe
Merkel's coalition widens poll lead
[OMANOBSERVER] German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's ruling centre-right coalition widened its lead in an opinion poll released yesterday, one month before general elections. The alliance between Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU'CSU) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) would now win 47 per cent of the votes in the September 22 elections, up from 45 per cent a week earlier, a Forsa survey conducted for Stern magazine showed.

The divided three-party leftist opposition would win 43 per cent of the ballots, the poll found. With 41 per cent of voters likely to cast ballots for Merkel's party, up 1 point, she could take her pick of future coalition partners. Forty-five per cent of votes can translate into a majority in the Bundestag parliament of just over 600 seats.

Campaigning for the election is in full swing but has aroused little passion. Forsa's data showed more than half of voters under 30 did not even know when the election would take place. Forsa found 46 per cent of the 18-to-29 age group could correctly answer when the election date is. The rest gave wrong dates or did not know. Forsa conducted the poll before Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's admission on Tuesday that a third bailout for Greece was likely. The issue has the potential to light up the campaign, since ordinary Germans are wary of aid to floundering euro zone neighbours. Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the opposition Social Democrats, challenged the chancellor to reveal what was planned for Greece.

"Merkel has got to tell the truth, and do it before the election," he told the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper. Merkel's front man said the issue of a third bailout for Greece was not discussed at a cabinet meeting yesterday. "Greece played no role at the cabinet meeting," Steffen Seibert said, adding that the current second bailout programme was not due to finish until the end of 2014. "There is nothing new," he said. "The programme is on track." Schaeuble's comment is not expected to benefit Gabriel's party.

Hijab Activists Meet With Sweden's Justice Minister
Idiots.
Tools.
[AnNahar] Sweden's justice minister on Tuesday met with activists who convinced thousands of women to wear headscarves this week to protest an alleged attack on a Mohammedan woman who wore a hijab.

"We tried to say that there is structural discrimination ...but (Justice Minister Beatrice Ask) kept referring to individual responsibilities," Foujan Rouzbeh, one of the organizers, said at a presser after the meeting.

"I also said that under this government, we've gotten the impression that that this type of crime has increased," she added.

A heavily pregnant Swedish woman wearing a hijab on Friday reported being assaulted as she approached her car in the Stockholm suburb of Farsta. The man who attacked her made a reference to the veil she was wearing, she said. Police are currently searching for witnesses to the incident, which is being treated as a hate crime.
50/50 that the claim is bogus...
Her claims prompted an outpouring of solidarity on social media sites, with some 4,000 Twitter users of different faiths posting pictures of themselves wearing headscarves on Monday, according to activists.

Leftist politicians and celebrities were among those supporting the campaign. On Instagram, just over 130 people had posted pictures of themselves with their heads covered on Tuesday, and on Facebook around 8,600 people had joined the group "The hijab appeal."

A demonstration was scheduled to be held in Stockholm on Thursday to support Mohammedan women's right to wear the hijab in public.

Activists who attended the meeting with Justice Minister Ask said they had also demanded that a commission look into the problem of violence against the women who wear it.
Does that include the violence committed by the hard boyz in the local muttawa?
The minister told tabloid Expressen that it was "important to listen," but declined to wear a headscarf herself.

India-Pakistan
HEC chief accused of plagiarism
[Dawn] Although it is the responsibility of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to take action on plagiarism, a research paper allegedly copied from a European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) report has been moving from one office to another at the HEC without anyone taking action or at least holding an inquiry into it.

The reason behind it is that one of the authors of the research paper was Dr Javaid R. Laghari, the current chairman of the HEC.

On the other hand, the HEC management claims that it is a conspiracy against Dr Laghari because a summary for the extension of his contract is being moved to the prime minister.

An official of the HEC requesting not to be quoted told Dawn that the thesis "Study of Pakistain election system -- 'intelligent e-election'" was written by Mohammad Nadeem and Dr Javaid R. Laghari in 2003 when they were working at SZABIST.

"When the documents were received at the HEC, we checked it on the plagiarism detecting software -Turnitin - and found that 78 per cent content of the research paper was plagiarised." It may be noted that 20 per cent plagiarism is ranked in the A Category (severe plagiarism). The official added: "We cannot take action on this because one of the authors of the paper is the current chairman of the HEC."

Another official of the HEC on the condition of anonymity said both the EU report 2002 and the research paper (copy available with Dawn) showed that the research paper was copied from the EU report available on its website.

He said it was mentioned in the curriculum vitae of Dr Laghari (available with Dawn) that he had published "Study of Pakistain election system - 'intelligent e-election'" in the Journal of Independent Studies and Research (Vol. 1, No 2, July 2003, pp. 2 -- 7) along with Dr Mohammad Nadeem.

According to the HEC rules, anyone found involved in plagiarism before 2007 cannot be punished but all the benefits availed because of the plagiarised thesis or research paper would be withdrawn, he added.

A senior officer, however, maintained that Dr Laghari was just a co-author of the research paper. He has never taken any benefit because of that research paper so action cannot be taken against him, he added.

The officer pointed out that the research paper was written in 2003 when there was no policy about plagiarism. "Dr Laghari just supervised that research paper so action can only be taken against Mohammad Nadeem," he said.He said some political personalities, who were stopped from taking part in the general elections because of fake degrees, had been trying to make Dr Laghari's personality controversial. They are creating hurdles in extension of his contract as the HEC chief, he said.

Prof Dr Fida Mohammad, a former president of the Federation of All Pakistain Universities Academic Staff Association, said it was a very sensitive issue and the HEC should confirm it carefully.

"Plagiarism is an offence, but I feel that the HEC officials cannot take action in this case so courts or the prime minister can be approached to get a decision," he said.

Imran unveils 2000-page white paper on poll rigging
[Dawn] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) Chairman Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
Wednesday released his party's white paper consisting of 2,000 pages over alleged rigging during the May 11 general elections.

Addressing a presser, the PTI chief said that if the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) failed to conduct free, fair and transparent by-elections -- scheduled to be held on Thursday, August 22, then the commission would itself be responsible for the consequences.

He said the party was not prepared for any alleged rigging during the May 11 polls as the election process was conducted under an independent judiciary and Election Commission.

Khan said around 400 petitions were filed in the election tribunals over rigging in the general elections, adding that out of aforementioned petitions 64 were filed by his party.

The PTI chief termed the role of some Returning Offices (RO) during the general elections as "shameful" saying one of the ROs had admitted to corruption during the polling process.

The cricket legend-turned-politician further said that his party admitted results of the general elections and did not want re-polling. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
he added the PTI would confront rigging attempts if electoral system was not fixed before the next elections.

"We want democracy to flourish in the country," he said and pointed out that Pakistain Mohammedan League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
, the prevailing prime minister of Pakistain, had delivered his victory speech at 10:30pm when only 15 per cent of vote count was completed.

"We don't want to derail the system. We only want re-count on four constituencies through thumb impression ......so that culprits could be punished," said Khan.

"We could have shut all the cities through sit-ins and protest rallies after the May 11 elections. But we exercised restraint for the sake of democracy," he added.

The PTI chief questioned as why and to whom Nawaz Sharif appealed for getting a clear majority at 10:30pm when the polling had already been stopped.

in Iran in December and reportedly said he wanted to "evangelize by handing out 12,000 pocket bibles".

He was accused of "crimes against state security".

After being baptized, the man had created a "domestic church" in his home in Rasht in northern Iran, Fides reported. Iranian police found books, CDs and more than 6,000 Bible at his place.

Fides said he had already been arrested in 2009 and found guilty of apostasy but had since been released.

The Catholic news agency quoted non-governmental groups saying that interest in Christianity among young Iranians is worrying the authorities and that churches have been shut down.

The agency said Iran's new president, Hasan Rouhani, has raised hopes with his rhetoric about civil rights.

The Christian minority in Iran is tiny, estimated at less than 1.0 percent of the population.

Government
US Army issues contract for purchase of 600,000 AK mags.
[Washington Examiner] There he goes again. President Champ's anti-gun administration, which recently pushed legislation banning assault weapons and large ammo magazines, is proving again that it is the industry's No. 1 customer.

On the heels of major purchases of AR-15-styled weapons for agencies like the IRS and millions of bullets used by assault-weapons and similar semi-automatic arms owned by federal forces, the Army has just announced that it is buying nearly 600,000 high capacity AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle magazines.

The gun is popular among collectors and target shooters, and was the weapon of choice used by this week's Georgia school shooter. But while fans of the gun help keep small weapon accessory companies in business, the Army's purchase is a major boost for an industry the president and his grassroots campaign, Organizing for Action, has spent the summer attacking.

It's just one purchase in a string of AK-47 equipment buys from the Feds.

Army officials told Secrets that the 30-round magazines, which would be banned under Champ's gun control proposals, are going to Afghanistan. But unlike the Pentagon's controversial purchase of Russian helicopters for Afghan special forces, the Soviet-Russian-styled AK-47 magazines are likely to be purchased from an American firm.

They can cost about $20 each, but can be found online in bulk for about $8, putting the value at $4.7 million to about $10 million.
White House still closed to school kids and tours.
The bid was put out by the the U.S. Army Contracting Command in Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. They are specifically seeking: "592,825 (approx) AK Rifle Magazines: 7.62x39mm caliber, new production, steel, 30 round capacity."

An Army official said that the purchase is being conducted by Foreign Military Sales program. "Each sale of equipment to overseas customers comprises the same 'total package' of quality materiel, facilities, spare parts, training, publications, technical documentation, maintenance support and other services that Army Materiel Command provides to U.S. Army units," said the Army.

The AK-47 is the old Soviet standard issue weapon and it is not used by American forces. It is commonly used in Afghanistan and also by terrorist forces.

The website infowars.com had some fun putting the size of the purchase in perspective. "Assuming an individual, unloaded magazine weight of 0.95 pounds, all of these magazines combined weigh more than the operating weight of a Lockheed Martin C-5 Galaxy, one of the largest aircraft in the world. The C-5 Galaxy wouldn't even be able to carry all of these magazines. Two trips would be necessary. To put it in another perspective, all these magazines combined weigh more than seven 18-wheelers at the maximum legal weight of 80,000 pounds," they reported.

#8  Couldn't do any worse than Univision, which by the way -

Last week the Nielsen company, which tracks television audiences, announced the Spanish-language Univision network was tops with viewers aged 18-45 for the month of July.

Univision passed NBC in February, but that was dismissed as a one-time win over a struggling network. To beat Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC and others in Nielsen’s July time frame speaks to Univision’s appeal and the size of the demographic it drew upon.

Univision offered the same types of music, sports and programs to attract young viewers and were not the usual summer reruns on the other networks.

Nielsen reports the median age for Univision viewers is 37. Over at CBS, NBC and ABC the median age is into the mid-50s.
