THEY'RE HERE : Reproducing Robots
Self-replicating robots are no longer the stuff of science fiction.. Scientists at the Cornell University in Ithaca, New York have created small robots that can build copies of themselves. Each robot consists of several 10cm (4 inch) cubes which have identical machinery, electromagnets to attach and detach to each other and a computer program for replication. The robots can bend and pick up and stack the cubes. "Although the machines we have created are still simple compared with biological self-reproduction, they demonstrate that mechanical self-reproduction is possible and not unique to biology," Hod Lipson said in a report in the science journal Nature on Wednesday.

He and his team believe the design principle could be used to make long term, self-repairing robots that could mend themselves and be used in hazardous situations and on space flights. The experimental robots, which do not do anything else except make copies of themselves, are powered through contacts on the surface of the table and transfer data through their faces. They self-replicate by using additional modules placed in special "feeding locations." The machines duplicate themselves by bending over and putting their top cube on the table. Then they bend again, pick up another cube, put it on top of the first and repeat the entire process. As the new robot begins to take shape it helps to build itself. "The four-module robot was able to construct a replica in 2.5 minutes by lifting and assembling cubes from the feeding locations," said Lipson.

Fortune cookies generate extra lottery winners
Edited for brevity.
The cookie crumbled right for 110 people who chose Chinese food. Betting on the numbers recommended in fortune cookies, they won from $100,000 to half a million dollars each in a multi-state US Powerball lottery, organization director Charles Strutt said on Wednesday. By the laws of statistical probability, there should have been only four or five winners among the 10.4 million ticket buyers in the lottery. But there were nearly 20 times that many, meaning $19 million had to be paid to unexpected winners in the March 30 drawing.

"Something was wrong; it was out of the realm of possibility," Strutt told Reuters. "So we suspected a great system error or a fraud. In the lottery business, you have to be naturally suspicious: whenever we see a statistical aberration we check it out."

School Suspends Boy for Wearing Prom Dress
A high school senior who thought it would be funny to wear a dress to his prom was ticketed $249 for disorderly conduct, suspended for three days and banned from his last track meet.
Yep. Hee-hee-larious.
School district administrator Jim Gottinger said the discipline was for more than just the dress, noting Kerry Lofy, 18, was dancing in a sexually provocative manner at the prom, according to a police report.
Shucks. That's never happened before...
Lofy doubts that was the real reason he was disciplined Monday.
"Nope. Nope. That can't be it."
"The whole night was that kind of dancing. They can't single me out and say, 'Oh it was you, it was only you,'" he said. "I think it's over the dress."
Brilliant! Holmes, how do you do it?
Lofy said Lake Geneva Badger High had no problem letting him go to Saturday's prom with another male, but that school officials drew the line at his dress. "I thought it would be more appropriate for there to be one person dressed like a girl and a person dressed like a guy, than for there to be two guys to go," said Lofy, a member of the school's track, ski, powerlifting and soccer teams.
Not as appropriate as it would have been if one of the persons had actually been a girl, of course...
Also, he thought people would find it funny to see a 6-foot, 185-pound male in a black, stretchy, spaghetti-strap dress.
The child sounds like a laff riot...
When Lofy showed up in the dress, a blond wig, open-toed platform sandals, blue earrings and a necklace, teachers turned him away. He said he showed up later with a tan-and-black plaid leisure suit over the dress, went inside and whipped off the suit during a dance-off. A security guard escorted him out, he said.
"Beat it, kid! Find someplace else to infest!"
Lofy said when he went to school Monday, the school liaison police officer issued the disorderly conduct ticket. "They thought I was mocking the school," he said.
"But really, I was making an ass of myself!"

#4  If he is on the powerlifting team I doubt anyone is going to "beat the shit out of him" I think it's funny as hell and puts gays in their place. I think that was his intent. That may be the untold story. He is getting hammered for sticking it to the gays.

#5  A powerlifter in a black, stretchy dress? Ick. With that kind of shape you want something classic, not slutty -- perhaps a champagne satin strapless number (or whatever best matches his skin tone), with a boned bodice and a sash to ensure it doesn't suddenly fall down. It's one thing for a lad to wear a dress, but quite another to display his crass tastelessness.

#6  Lofy and date then took a limo to their postprom hotel room.

I saw a news item item about this. There were two other boys in matching red gowns were running away with Lofy. Maybe the three weren't paying attention in powerlifting class and instead were injecting estrogen.

More Stupid Running Back Tricks
The NFL was considering whether to penalize Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith after it was revealed he was caught at the Twin Cities airport with an elaborate contraption designed to beat drug tests. A search of a bag Smith was carrying April 21 turned up several vials of dried urine and a device called "The Original Whizzinator," which includes a fake penis, bladder and athletic supporter. An NFL spokesman said using the device during a drug test would be a violation of league drug policies, but it wasn't clear whether there were penalties for possessing one outside of a testing situation. The stakes are high for Smith, who has two strikes against him under the league's substance abuse policy. He got the second last season and was suspended for four games but was still the team's top rusher. Another violation could earn him a yearlong suspension.

Smith was detained at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after a tube of toothpaste in his bag set off an alarm. A search of his bag discovered six or seven vials of white powder with the consistency of cocaine, according to report by the airport police. After the powder tested negative for drugs, the report said, Smith told officers it was dried urine used in conjunction with a device called "The Original Whizzinator." The report's author wrote that Smith "told me that it was dried urine for making a clean urine test." In addition, Smith had a bottle of pills labeled "cleansing formula." The "Whizzinator," advertised for $150 on the maker's Web site, ...
The $150 version has a four inch prosthetic, the $999 version has an eight inch one.
... includes a fake penis attached to an athletic supporter and plastic bag. The user fills the bag with water blended with urine powder. When the user takes a drug test in front of an observer, the water is released through the prosthetic with a valve.
Back when I had the joy of monitoring piss tests (Golden Flow), we were briefed to watch out for this device.
What fun.
Smith told police he was taking the vials to his cousin. The police report didn't say where Smith was traveling. Smith's agent, Douglas Hendrickson, didn't return repeated messages left at his office Wednesday. In 2000, Smith was kicked out of Tennessee for using marijuana.

Arabia
Oman deports more than 1,000 Pakistanis for alleged illegal entry
They could get in any other way?
KARACHI - Two cargo ferries arrived Thursday in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, carrying 1,018 Pakistanis arrested in Oman and deported for illegal entry and working without permission, an official said. The men had been jailed two to six months in Oman and released on Tuesday to be sent home, said Malik Subh Sadiq, an official with Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency. Sadiq said the men will allowed to go home after they're questioned about suspected human traffickers, who may have helped them enter Oman illegally in exchange for money.
The Omani version of coyotes.
Thousands of Pakistanis try to seek jobs in oil-rich Middle East countries, many of them paying smugglers to take them there. They are often caught and sent back. Oman has deported some 40,000 Pakistanis in the past two years, the Federal Investigation Agency has said.
Better work on those forged passports.

Europe
The French vs. Google War: France Already Losing, How Will They Surrender?
France may not have made fighting terrorists a priority, nor did their army fully mobilize when Nazi Panzer divisions blitkrieged through its countryside — but it is preparing for all out war and the mantle of a European crusade against the influence of U.S.-based Google Inc.
In the interest of fairness, La Belle France is fighting terrorists, just not coordinating very closely with us in the process, and shying away from confronting those "root causes" — the takfir prosyletizers and the itinerant preachers. And the Free French shouldn't be confused with the Vichy government...
Paris has persuaded its European neighbors to join in a $128 million project to counterbalance the search engine's dominance, the Wall Street Journal reports.
That's a battle that's already been fought. Google's at the top of the heap because it produced a better search engine than, for example, Alta Vista...
The move comes in response to a Google plan, announced in December, to scan millions of books in American and British libraries and make them available online. As NewsMax.com reported in early May, the Europeans fear that "the continent's contribution to the pillars of recorded knowledge will be crushed by a profit-oriented California company," and the project "may end up presenting a U.S.-centric version of the world's literary legacy."
Foisting the complete works of Mickey Spillane on a helpless world? Victor Hugo available only in English translation? Tusk tusk. We must be stopped!
The president of France's national library, Jean-Noel Jeanneney, warned that English-language material and an American view of history would come to dominate the Internet, and French President Jacques Chirac called the Google project "an immense danger," according to the Journal. Now six heads of state and 23 national libraries in Europe have pledged their support for the continent's own book-scanning project, dubbed the European Digital Library. The European Commission has pledged $77 million to the effort and an additional $46 million to related projects, including the development of a search engine to compete with Google.
They can prob'ly pick up Alta Vista cheap...
"It's necessary to work together or we will be overwhelmed by America," Jeanneney said in an interview. Google says it is ready to cooperate with French and other European libraries and has already scanned books in more than 100 languages, the Journal reports.
But they don't count...
Ironically, the French rely on Google even more than Americans. In a recent month Google accounted for 53 percent of all French searches, compared to 47 percent in the U.S., according to Nielsen/NetRatings...

Italy's Economy Enters Second Recession in Two Years
Italy's economy, Europe's fourth- biggest, unexpectedly fell into recession for the second time in two years as industrial production slumped and consumers failed to respond to 6 billion euros ($7.7 billion) in tax cuts. Gross domestic product shrank 0.5 percent in the first quarter, the steepest drop in six years, after a contraction of 0.4 percent in the previous three months, statistics office Istat said in Rome today. Economists forecast growth of 0.2 percent, according to the median of 30 estimates in a Bloomberg survey. ``These numbers are disasterous,'' said Maurizio Binelli, head economist at Abaxbank SpA in Milan, who had predicted growth of 0.1 percent. ``Consumer demand has been weak as has investment. This is bad news for the economy, which will probably grow less than 1 percent this year.'' Although the German economy did relatively well in the last Q. The European economy looks like it is going to get a lot worse.

Investigators Find Evidence of Voter Fraud
Nope. Not Ohio.
MILWAUKEE - A task force looking into potential voter fraud on Election Day said Tuesday that it found more than 200 felons voted illegally and more than 100 instances of people voting twice or using fake names and addresses.
200 felons? Bet they went big for Bush...
The investigators found hundreds of fraudulent votes in all and counted 4,600 more ballots than registered voters in Milwaukee but did not uncover any proof of a plot to alter the outcome of the hotly contested presidential race in Wisconsin's largest city. They also found ballots cast using the names of dead people.
"I'm Dead...and I vote Democrat." No, no. No plot at all. Nothing to see here.
Prosecutors have not filed criminal charges in the probe."There is not the evidence of an overriding conspiracy in all of this," U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic said.
Move it along. Nothing to see here...
The task force, however, did find evidence of sloppy record-keeping and poor training for poll workers, who were overwhelmed by thousands of absentee ballots. Biskupic said the faulty records will make it tough to prosecute many of the crimes. Biskupic, the Milwaukee County district attorney, Milwaukee police and the FBI launched the probe after a newspaper investigation found more than 1,200 people voted from invalid addresses and that election officials were unable to process 1,300 same-day registration cards.
The "Smokes for the Winos Disenfranchised Program" paying dividends, perhaps?
Democrat John Kerry received more than 71 percent of the 277,000 ballots cast in Milwaukee in the presidential race. Kerry won Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes by about 11,000 votes.
Any comments, Jawn?
The review comes amid a partisan fight over plans to make voters show ID at the polls. Wisconsin allows same-day registration, and those who already are registered can simply show up to vote without ID. The state also allows anyone to vote absentee without a reason, which caused long lines and headaches for clerks around the state before Nov. 2. Both the GOP-controlled houses of the state Legislature passed bills this year that would have required ID. Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, vetoed them. Now, Republicans want to amend the state constitution to require voter ID. Doyle said Tuesday a voter ID requirement wouldn't have solved any of Milwaukee's Election Day problems, which he attributed to "bureaucratic mistakes, poor management and lack of training among the poll workers."
Really? I thought that only happened in Ohio?

Dem Congressmen: Conservative Voices On PBS May Be Illegal
Two congressional Democrats called Wednesday for an investigation into recent activities by the Corporation for Liberal Public Broadcasting, suggesting that efforts by the Republican chairman of the private nonprofit to add any more conservative programs onto PBS may violate federal law.

In a letter released Wednesday evening, Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., and Rep. John D. Dingell, D-Mich., asked CPB Inspector General Kenneth A. Konz to investigate the contracting, hiring and policies of the corporation, which distributes federal funds to public television stations. Both congressmen are ranking Democrats on committees that have oversight of public television. They called recent actions taken by CPB Chairman Kenneth Tomlinson ``disturbing'' and ``extremely troubling.''

A CPB spokesman could not be reached for comment. But in a recent interview with the LOS ANGELES TIMES, Tomlinson defended his efforts to expand conservative perspectives on PBS, saying he merely wants to increase the network's audience.

Let the leftists fund their broadcast media - why should I have to do it for them? They've got more money than I do anyway. (And not by leftist means, either, you'll notice.)

Anti-polio vaccine Malians jailed
A court in Mali has sentenced 11 men to up to three years in prison for refusing to let their children be vaccinated against polio. Passing the sentences, the judge said the men were convicted of "resisting authority, disobedience and rebellion".
In this case, they really are doing it "for the children".
He said they members of an obscure Muslim sect who believed only God could make people sick or save them.
Obscure? 90% is obscure?
They opposed the polio vaccination because they believed it would make their daughters sterile.
"We want our girls to crank out lots of Islamic babies, we just don't want them to enjoy it!"
Several Muslim-dominated states in northern Nigeria banned the United Nations polio vaccination programme last year because some Imams denounced it as a western plot to spread infertility among African girls. UN health workers said the result was a resurgence of the disease across several countries in West Africa. Polio affects mostly young children and targets the nervous system. It can lead to paralysis or even death.
Even if Islam evaporated tomorrow and these guys became Christians, they'd be the ones passing the snakes.

#1  Ironic that they claim the vaccine will do what their own ignorance and stupidity allows the Darwinism of their people.

#2  Weren't the famous Magical Disappearing Muslim Penis scares related to the Polio Vaccination Program? Or was that a different drag-them-kicking-and-screaming-out-of-the-Seventh-Century program?

Sigh. So many Muzzy MindF**k Conspiracies, so little time.

#5  The Disappearing Penis was purported to result from shaking hands with Jews or maleficent Westerners. No vaccination was needed.

#3  I think the video producers blew it. They took a rather compelling idea and did a mediocre job. With such an amateur production, it loses impact. If you can't do it professionally, then don't do it at all.

Americans can tolerate plenty, but they cannot tolerate bad production in video entertainment.

1) They should have miked the guy so we could hear what he says clearly.
2) Get the camera on a tripod, or use an image stabilized camera. It was shaking like some jihadi videos we have seen lately.
3) He should have first joined the protest, flirted with the lady protesters, then walk over to the KFC and get the chicken. That would have made him coming back noshing chicken funnier. He could have asked one for a date, and when turned down, go eat some chicken.
4) Also, he shouldn't have gone for the breast. Everyone knows that when it comes to chicken parts, the leg is the funniest. Didn't he ever see a sit-com?
5) The bald head moonbat is very ineffective. If I was doing it, I would have dressed up in a chicken suit, and imitated Foghorn Leghorn.

Mucky, here's the root of your confusion:

Before it is fried, the chicken is dead.

#5  I think Mucky is referring to the crowded and inhumane conditions that occur in "factory farming" of chickens and pigs.

I eat meat gladly, but am bothered by the way it is being raised in most of the lowest-cost providers.
Posted by: too true || 05/12/2005 7:58 Comments || Top||

#6  I'm with 'too true' on that as well. The brutal conditions of those factory farms will turn me into a vegetarian well before any PETA protest will. I grew up on a small ranch where we raised cattle and chicken for food, and I am appalled at the conditions those poor animals are subject to in the factories by comparison. I may have to go back to raising my own food someday so I can eat it with a clear conscience if conditions don't change.

#7  I have started buying free range meat and eggs, and find the flavor worth the expense. The distributor delivers to the door, which helps. Your best bet for finding a good supplier is your local farmers' market.

Man Chops Off Hands of Protester in India
A man with a sword cut off the hands of a government social worker in central India for trying to stop child marriages, officials said Wednesday. The attack on the woman highlighted the difficulty of ending the centuries-old practice in the region. Shakuntala Verma, a supervisor with the Department of Women and Child Development in Madhya Pradesh state, was attacked Tuesday night in Bhangarh village, Superintendent of Police H. L. Borana was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India. Wednesday marked a Hindu festival in which hundreds of minors are married off. No arrests have been made in the attack in Bhangargh, 170 west of the state capital, Bhopal.

Child marriage is illegal in India, but the ancient practice is still prevalent in some rural pockets of Madhya Pradesh. However, the number of marriages was down this year as a result of tough measures taken by police, the New Delhi Television News channel reported. Verma had been protesting child marriages in the area, officials said.

#2  INDIAN: It is the Indian custom
RAJ SOLDIER: Hanging blokes who do things that that is her Majesties custom.

Somehow the British put an end to this sort of nonsense in the primitive days of previous centures. India's gonna need to play rough if they are serious about changing cultural things.

Gangland rivalry claims another life
LAHORE: The rivalry between the Tipu Truckanwala and Gogi Butt gangs in city claimed another life early on Wednesday when four people killed Asim Iqbal Butt, an ally of Tippu Truckanwala, in Ravi Road police precincts.
I'm sorry, but I can't get too stiff with fear over gangs headed by Tipu Truckanwala and Gogi Butt. "Babyface" Truckanwala and "Machinegun" Butt, maybe. "Mad Dog" Truckanwala and "Slasher" Butt, maybe. But not Tipoo and Gogi...
The Tipu Truckanwala gang lodged a case against Amir Butt of the Gogi gang and three others. Ravi Road police arrested Amir Butt and two other men later on Wednesday.
"Lodged a case against them"? What the hell happened to going to the mattresses?
Asim Butt, alias Chand Pahalwan, was at the dera of Bhaiee Pahalwan in Shah Alam Market on Tuesday night. He left for his house in Qila Lakshaman Singh with his guard Wali Khan on a motorcycle at around 3am on Wednesday.
Ohfewgawdsake. Nobody has a bodyguard named "Wally." If he'da taken "Big Mahmoud" or somebody named "Spike" or "Knuckles" he'd prob'ly be alive and well today.
Two more guards, Akbar and Ubaid, followed them on another motorcycle. Eyewitnesses said that as Asim Butt and Wali Khan approached their house, suddenly Amir Butt and three accomplices came from the opposite side riding on motorcycles and opened fire on them.
"It's a trap!" hollered Akbar...
Asim Butt's guards retaliated, but the assailants fled. Asim Butt and Wali Khan received bullet wounds and were taken to Mayo Hospital where doctors pronounced Asim Butt dead.
"He's dead, Jim!"
Wali Khan is stated to be in a critical condition.
"Give it to me straight, Doc! How long've I got?... Ummm... What's with the toe tag?"
Several members of the Tipu Taruckanwala gang carrying weapons gathered outside Mayo Hospital, which created a wave of fear in the public.
"Big Ahmed, send some of the boyz over to the hospital to flash their roscoes and create a wave of fear in the public!"
"Hokay, Boss!"
Asim Butt married a couple of months ago and his younger sister was due to be engaged on Wednesday. His body was given to his family on Wednesday evening after an autopsy.
"Aw, hell! I was expecting a toaster!"
Later, he was buried in a local graveyard.
"Maw! Asim's titzup! What'll we do?"
"Bury him in the local graveyard and go to the mattresses!"
Affiliates of the Tipu gang blamed the city police for the murder, saying if they had arrested the suspects wanted for the murder of five people outside Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Building near Aiwan-e-Adal on May 26, 2003, Asim Butt would still be alive.
"Yeah! Dat's right! Us crooks can't do our jobs if the coppers don't do their jobs!"
The Gogi Butt gang is believed to be behind the attack on Tipu Truckanwala on May 26, 2003 when Tipu, his guards Muzaffar Ali Shah, Sabz Ali, Ali Rehman, Nasir Hussain, Sardar Muhammad, drivers Iftikhar and Nadeem, and two friends Nazzar Shah and Mohsin Ali were about to leave the Aiwan-e-Adal near the ETPB Building and two assailants opened fire on them. Five people were killed on the spot. The affiliates of the Tipu gang said that Asim Butt and Amir Butt met accidentally in a hotel in Lakshmi Chowk on Saturday and had a heated argument. They said that Amir Butt threatened Asim Butt if he kept pursuing the Aiwan-e-Adal case.

#1  I fear for people falling victim to the Butt Gang. If we can maybe broker a truce and combine the organizations, re-naming it the ButtTruck Political Party, we could have true peace.
