Movers find live hand grenade in woman's couch
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

SELMA, Ala.

Workers removing furniture from the home of a deceased elderly woman got a shock when they spotted an active hand grenade stuck in the bottom of the couch.

The FBI, ATF and Montgomery Police Bomb Squad were called to the scene after the bomb was discovered Thursday.

"They used a robot, armed with a camera, from about 50 yards away from the grenade," Selma Police Chief Jimmy Martin said.

The robot successfully ripped open the back of the couch but could not secure the grenade; Martin said the camera on the robot could not discern whether the pin was in. A member of the bomb squad was then sent into the house and found the pin in the grenade.

Martin said police believed the grenade had been there for some time. It was secured and taken to a Montgomery bunker, where officials planned to dispose of it, he said.

Police are investigating how the grenade got into the elderly lady's couch.

Martin said the woman had a military veteran son, who is also deceased, but could not say whether that explained how the grenade came to be in the house.

I thought I saw a lump in that old couch at the gargage sale

Madagascar hissing cockroaches invade Moscow's underground facilities
I blame Bush.
Passengers of the Moscow metro say that they can see large Madagascar cockroaches crawling on central metro stations

Entomologists are certain that the exotic insects appeared in Moscow owing to tourists' efforts: the damp and warm atmosphere of the Moscow metro turned out to be the perfect environment for the cockroaches to breed in. Spokespeople for the metro administration said, however, that they would soon launch a powerful system to disinfect train cars, tunnels and stations with the help of ultraviolet radiation.

Madagascar cockroaches were originally trying to hide in cellars. However, they could not face the competition with rats in cold underground corridors, until they made their way to the Moscow metro. Specialists say that the environment of the underground transportation system fits the exotic creates perfectly. The cockroaches may enjoy comfortable temperatures and humidity there all the year round. There are no problems with food either.

Passengers of the Moscow metro say that they can see large Madagascar cockroaches crawling on central metro stations, such as Pushkinskaya, Tverskaya, or Lubyanka. "Wingless insects can penetrate into underground facilities through numerous cracks and tracks that lead to the tunnels," the chairman of the Moscow underground research center, Vadim Mikhailov said. "It is not easy to get rid of those insects. Russian-Madagascar cockroaches are more viable than our traditional cockroaches. Madagascar beetles do not transmit infections. They do not bite and are quite cleanly," the specialist assured.

The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of the largest cockroaches in the world. Adult species may often grow to the size of a mouse. The lifespan of these insects reaches 2.5 years. An adult Madagascar cockroach is a large beetle, about ten centimeters long. Madagascar cockroaches can be kept at home as exotic pets: they do not produce revolting smell. In addition, one can feed them to lizards and tarantulas, Newsru wrote.

Yemeni women campaign for equal blood money
Posted by: Fred || 07/10/2005 00:00 || Comments || Link || [7 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Nothing to make fun at. The fact is that if the family of a murdered woman wants the murder executed it has to pay the difference in blood money between man and woman to the murderer's family (a woman life is worth half the one of man). Meaning that if the family of the murdered is poor it could be forced to settle due to being unable to pay.

Isn't Sharia nice?
Posted by: JFM || 07/10/2005 5:35 Comments || Top||

#2  Recently, many preachers at mosques in the Yemeni capital have been telling the public that the blood money of women is half that of men and that was "a strict rule" that can never be changed or amended, even though none of them has concrete evidence from the Quran or the Sunnah.

"It is written! Well, maybe not written. But we talked it over at Abdullah's last week, and we think it ought to be written! And so it shall be written, as soon as I find my Mullah's Magic Marker."

These clowns are making this stuff up as they go.

Malaysian Woman Driving in Makkah
A Malaysian woman in the Kingdom for Umrah was involved in a traffic accident in one of Makkah's busiest streets, Al-Nadwa daily reported. A large number of people gathered at the accident because of the unusual situation. The Malaysian woman was unaware of the Kingdom's traffic regulations, grew tired of waiting for a driver who had not shown up so she took the wheel of the car. The other driver involved in the accident did not file charges against the Malaysian woman who was later released.
Have they checked the Kaaba? Won't a woman driver make it melt?

Police Arrest Saudi Male Belly Dancer
Police in Qateef have arrested and are investigating two Saudi men who were imitating the well-known UAE singer, Abdullah Balkheer, Al-Watan newspaper reported. One young man was singing and dancing in his own private concert in a local amusement park. A number of visitors reported the man to police who came to the park and found the man dancing. He was also wearing makeup so that he would look like the singer. Police also arrested a belly dancer on the stage who was a man in disguise wearing an abaya and makeup. Because he was so good at the dance and moved so well, people thought he was a woman.

#4  A few years ago, my ongoing investigation of health-care fraud obliged me to visit the "Holistic and Esoteric Arts Faire" at a local Unitarian Church. There were swarms of New Age types hawking their wares, crystals, essential oils, kirlian photography, bokes of magickal spells, psychic readings, organic products of every conceivable description, etc. It was, in short, a veritable kook convention. It wasn't a complete waste of time, however. The whole foray was redeemed by an expert demonstration of belly-dancing, and the performer was definitely a woman.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Muslim scholar Rafiq Zakaria passes away
MUMBAI — Leading Islamic scholar, author and veteran Congressman Rafiq Zakaria, passed away here yesterday morning following a heart attack. He was 85, and is survived by his wife, three sons two goats and a daughter. According to family sources, Zakaria complained of pain in the back early in the morning.
"Honey, I think I'm about to have a massive myocardial infarction."
He later suffered a massive heart attack and died before he could be taken to a hospital. His body was later shifted to a hospital, and the funeral is expected to take place in Aurangabad on Monday. His son Farid Zakaria, who is the editor of Newsweek International is expected to fly in here from the US today.

Born in Nala Sopara, a historic town on the outskirts of Mumbai, Dr Zakaria topped the Bombay University MA examinations. He won a Ph.D from London University with distinction, and qualified for the bar from Lincoln's Inn. After returning to India he was involved with the Freedom movement, joining the Quit India movement, and was associated with several leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Azad. But Dr Zakaria was a strident critic of the two-nation theory of Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

He authored a book on Jinnah, The Man Who Divided India, and was critical of the founder of Pakistan. Zakaria wrote books on other leaders, including Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, poet Iqbal, and many others on Indian Muslims.

Though he moved to Aurangabad, he was active in Maharashtra politics, and later got close to Indira Gandhi. He started over a dozen educational institutions in Aurangabad and many in Mumbai, and was also chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. Dr Zakaria was elected to the Maharashtra legislative assembly from Aurangabad for three terms from 1962, and also served as a minister in the state. In 1978 he entered Parliament and became deputy leader of the Congress. Over the years he has represented India at the United Nations and other bodies.

However, the last few years have seen seem avoid state and national politics. Zakaria devoted much of his time to writing scholarly works, especially on matters relating to Indian Muslims. His wife, Fatma, was an editor in the Times of India.
