Les Paul, Guitar Legend, Dies at 94
Les Paul, one of the most revered guitarists in history and the father of the electric guitar, passed away last night, August 12th at the age of 94. Paul’s manager confirmed to Rolling Stone that cause of death was respiratory failure, and a statement from Gibson indicates Paul was suffering from severe pneumonia and died at a hospital in White Plains, New York.

#1  Another day in my life when I shall remember where I was when I heard the sad news of a hero passing.
My best two guitars were Gibson Les Pauls; the only improvement required on those '70s models was to replace the machineheads with ones made by Schaller, (geared), and perhaps mess around with the Double Humbucker pick-up polarities according to taste, in the days before the multi-effects pedal. The action on the necks could not be bettered.
God bless you, Sir, for all the pleasure given to millions, and counting, by your dedication to your art.

Egypt bans import of genetically modified food
[Al Arabiya Latest] Any agricultural imports to Egypt must have a certificate from the country of origin that the product is not genetically modified and the rule will also apply to Egyptian exports, MENA the official news agency said Wednesday.

The debate in Egypt over food quality has become politically heated after some Russian wheat was rejected over quality concerns. Members of parliament have been calling for stricter rules and greater agricultural self sufficiency.

Traders expressed surprise at the move, saying some of Egypt's main food imports at the moment included genetically modified products.

#5  Trade War by other means. Since stopping the import of food made cheaper by others [read Americans et al] that undermines the local farmers [with many countries' economies still disproportionately agrarian] is a no-no for official WTO purposes, they simply resort to Luddite excuses to achieve the same end. Just think of MMGW as just an excuse to tax the serfs even more by pols and not the flaky quasi-science behind it. As the man said, just follow the money.

Bangladesh
Clinic, construction firm vandalised for toll refusal
[Bangla Daily Star] Local Jubo League activists yesterday vandalised a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts and a construction firm office and looted cash and cellphones at Mohammadpur on refusal of toll for the National Mourning Day programme.

Locals said equipped with brickbats, bamboo sticks and iron rods at least 40 Jubo League activists in two groups ravaged Jiboner Alo Drug Rehabilitation Centre and Salam Enterprise at Dhaka Udyan in the area around 9:30am and looted Tk 16,600 and two cellphone sets.

Md Rashedullah Tusher, director of the rehabilitation centre, said led by Saju, Mosharraf and Kamal the Jubo League activists came to the centre around 9:00am and demanded Tk 50,000 for the programme. Denied, they returned in half an hour and attacked the office. Three of his employees--Nazmul Islam, 28, Iqbal Hossain Swapan, 35, and Lat Miah, 42--sustained injuries as they tried to resist the men, he added.

Muksedur Rahman, manager of the centre, said six months ago these men demanded Tk 50,000 toll but the DCC ward commissioner Abul Hasem Hasu settled the matter. Later on Tuesday night, the same men came back and demanded the amount for holding a feast on the occasion of Bangabandu's death anniversary, he added.

The rehabilitation centre authorities alleged that despite repeated request police made delay in reaching the spot giving the attackers a chance to leave.

Of the construction firm, an official seeking anonymity said the same gang demanded Tk 50,000 for the occasion.

However, the local Awami League activists present at the scene told reporters that the aggressors did not belong to the ruling party.

Police said no case was lodged in this connection.

Britain
UK: Asylum staff 'are intimidating'
Illegal immigrants and foreign prisoners are failing to be removed from the UK because escort staff are "intimidating" them, a report has said.
Boggle.
The findings are revealed by the Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, Dame Anne Owers.

Inspectors monitored immigration escort staff involved in removing detainees from Heathrow Airport. It says when officers escorting immigration offenders mistreat them, removals are more likely to fail.

The report cites the case of four Afghan detainees, who were initially willing to fly home. Then, in what the report describes as an "unnecessary and intimidating" intervention, escort staff warned the detainees they would be "dealt with" if they were "naughty" on the plane. They refused to go.

Valid documents

Removals were also cancelled due to staff shortages and because nurses had not been booked to accompany detainees with health problems.

Sometimes detainees were flown back to the UK because their home countries said their paperwork was not in order.

On one occasion, escort staff taking a woman to Mozambique were themselves locked up after the authorities there questioned whether their documents were valid.

Dame Anne said: "This short report found worrying gaps and weaknesses in complaints and monitoring processes.

"It also found varying practice, with no evidence that the good and thoughtful approach of some staff was mirrored in clear and consistent standards of treatment, support and communication.

"This heightened the risk of ill-treatment or abuse, and was also likely to lead to failed removals."

David Wood, director of the criminality and detention group at the UK Border Agency said anyone involved in the detention and removal of detainees was highly trained. "Many detainees refuse to leave the UK voluntarily, even when the courts say they must. In some cases individuals become violent toward themselves, the public or our staff when it is time to go home.

"Detainee escorts have a very difficult job to do in carrying out what the public expects of the UK Border Agency in enforcing our immigration laws."

Hugo Chavez moves to close golf courses
Hugo Chavez's socialist "revolution" has found its latest victim - golf. The Venezuelan president launched a tirade against the "bourgeois" sport recently during one of his infamous Sunday national television addresses which can last for several hours.

His government has also moved in recent weeks to shut down two of the country's best-known golf courses, according to The New York Times. One is in Maracay and the other is in the coastal city of Carabelleda.

"Let's leave this clear," Mr Chavez said during a live broadcast. "Golf is a bourgeois sport." Mr Chavez then went on to mock the use of golf carts used by some golfers and claimed this represented the laziness of those who played the game.

If the two planned closures go ahead the number of golf course shut down in the last three years will be nine, Julio Torres, director of the Venezuelan Golf Federation. told The New York Times.

The majority of closures have taken place in oil producing regions and were initially built for Americans who worked in the industry. Mr Chavez sees the connection between the two as elitist.

In neighbouring Cuba, however, the government is allowing foreign investers to build several new courses as part of a determination to increase tourists revenues.

The president has said that he has no plans to make golf illegal in Venezuela. "I respect all sports," he said. "But there are sports and there are sports. Do you mean to tell me this is a people's sport?", he said.

Venezuela's government has been on a socialist drive, seizing the assets of foreign owned companies operating in the country and nationalising various industries. Mr Chavez was accused of stifling freedom of speech when he recently announced that 34 radio stations would be closed.

Honduran police clash again with Zelaya supporters
TEGUCIGALPA, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Supporters of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya clashed with soldiers and police for a second day on Wednesday as street protests over the June 28 army coup turned rowdy. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of thousands of demonstrators in the capital Tegucigalpa and protesters responded by throwing stones in a scuffle near Congress. The demonstration calmed down by the afternoon.

Protests on Tuesday and Wednesday by pro-Zelaya activists left broken windows at shops and fast-food restaurants and sent demonstrators fleeing clouds of tear gas. It was one of the few times that near-daily rallies have turned violent since the coup.

The June 28 judicial order coup was bloodless and since then only two protesters have been killed in demonstrations. One was shot by soldiers at the airport when Zelaya tried to return in a plane and was blocked by the army. The other was shot in the head in a later protest.

Zelaya, an ally of socia1ist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, has been touring the Americas in exile as most of the world pushes for his return and supporters hold continual street rallies. Thousands have also turned out to support Micheletti's de facto government.

The interim leaders have said they are ready to hold on to power until regularly scheduled elections in November, even though the head of the Organization of American States has said the regional body will not recognize the result.

Zelaya, Lula ask for bigger U.S. role in solving Honduran crisis
BRASILIA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday called on the United States to use more political influence to help solve the Honduran crisis. Zelaya, who was in Brazil for a visit, ...
... after having been escorted out of Mexico ...
... called on the U.S. government to take more measures such as trade sanctions against the Honduran interim government. 70 percent of the Honduran economy depends on the United States.

Reaffirming his support for Zelaya's "immediate and unconditional" return to Honduras, Lula said he would talk to his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on the issue at an appropriate time. But there wasn't a date set for the conversation between the two leaders.
"Thanks Mel, I'll call Bambi on this and see what I can do."
"When will you call him?"
"Umm, sometime ..."
After the meeting, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celson Amorim told the press that Zelaya's return would largely depend on the position of the United States.

"President Lula said that clearly we are concerned by the delay (of Zelaya's return), because as time passes, the possibility that President Zelaya's legitimate elections (scheduled for November) is weakening," Amorim said.

Zelaya was expected to end his term as president at year-end.

"This depends on what the United States will act," Amorim said. "It must be a multilateral action. We believe that actions should be conducted by the OAS (Organization of American States)."

Zelaya arrived in Brasilia Tuesday and was welcomed by the Brazilian government with honors for a head of state. He will leave Thursday morning for Chile to meet with President Michelle Bachelet.
He'll collect another meaningless promise. Bachelet is way too smart to hook up with a loser when Chile has the US market to sell to.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Putin ratchets up tension with Georgia
Isn't he just a prime minister?
Vladimir Putin stoked tensions in the tinderbox Caucasus region on Wednesday, saying Moscow will spend nearly half a billion dollars next year beefing up its military presence in Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia.
That's a lot of money in $70 a barrel of oil days. Does the Rooskie military have that kind of change?
The Russian prime minister's announcement raised the spectre of Russian and US frigates patrolling the same patch of water in the Black Sea.
And keeps the Russian public from pondering the economic meltdown ...
Much of the money is expected to fund construction of a new naval base in the Abkhaz town of Ochamchira, within striking distance of Georgia's Poti and Batumi ports, which have been visited by US warships since the war in Georgia last summer. An existing Russian air base further north in Gudauta is also likely to be enlarged.

The plans enraged Georgia, just a day after the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, irked the leadership of another post-Soviet foe, Ukraine. Kiev responded angrily when Medvedev wrote a letter to President Viktor Yushchenko accusing his country of distorting history, discriminating against Russian speakers and "obstructing" Russia's Black Sea fleet.

The Kremlin had already mooted plans for military expansion into Abkhazia but Putin confirmed the scale of the budget for the first time today. "We will allot a very large amount of money -- 15 to 16bn roubles (£300m) -- for the development of our military base and strengthening of Abkhazia's state border next year," he told reporters, prior to visiting the republic. "This is an additional and serious guarantee of the security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia," he added.

Tension between Russia and Georgia has been high since they marked the first anniversary of their five-day war in South Ossetia last week.

In an interview with the Guardian, Georgia's deputy foreign minister, Alexander Nalbandov, said Russia's military expansion into Abkhazia violated the peace agreement brokered by the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. "This is an illegal initiative on occupied territory and we call on the international community to condemn it," he said.

Nato is increasingly nervous at Russia extending its power beyond its borders and expressed "concern" earlier this year over reports that Russia planned to increase its military footprint in Abkhazia. Only Russia and Nicaragua have recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent and under international law the construction of bases on what is officially Georgian territory will be illegal.
Putin's already demonstrated what he thinks of that ...
However, protests are likely to fall on deaf ears. The Kremlin has made it clear it will sign bilateral agreements with both republics as "partner states" as it sees fit. A deal on military and economic cooperation was signed with both regions in November last year.
Under international law, Russia is allowed to bully its neighbors, whereas when the US does it, it's intolerable interference. You could look it up ...
James Nixey, a Russian foreign policy expert at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, said Moscow's bullish stance towards US allies Georgia and Ukraine showed the west's attempts to "reset" relations with Russia were "on the point of failure".

"The common thread here is ultimately power projection," he said. "The most important part of Russian foreign policy is to be a regional leader, to have a kind of lordship over the neighbourhood. It wants to play a controlling influence in all of the former Soviet states."

Moscow had expected less explicit US support for Ukraine and Georgia under President Barack Obama, and was now letting its displeasure be known, said Nixey. "We're seeing an incremental ratcheting up of the tension, which is how we got to where we were back in the Bush administration."

Ariel Cohen, a Russia expert at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, said Russia's "trajectory towards annexation of Abkhazia" reflected its "increasingly assertive stance" and belief that the former Soviet region and eastern Europe are its "privileged sphere of interests".

"In the context of pushing the reset button in relations, this is a poke in the eye for the US and the Europeans," he said.

Family First polls less than 2% and has a single senator (seats are allocated on a PR basis)

Which leads to a very interesting dynamic. For the first time in the next Australian election voters in any country will have a clearly anti-AGW party to vote for.

It will be interesting to see how well they do. But I for one will definitely vote for them. A party I would have never voted for in the past.

UK unemployment rate hits 13-year high
[Iran Press TV Latest] Official figures show that unemployment in the United Kingdom is now at its highest level with a total number of 2.44 million people being out of jobs.

The latest unemployment rate, calculated according to the International Labor Organization (ILO) method, stood at the highest level since November 1996.

According to the ILO measure, recession claimed another 220,000 jobs in the three months the preceded June.

This is while the Office for National Statistics has announced that about 2,500 people are losing their jobs a day and the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance in July rose by 24,900 to 1.58 million.

Commenting before the latest numbers were released, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson described unemployment levels as "unacceptable".

The new UK unemployment figures will now place further pressure on the authorities to take constructive steps to revitalize the recession-affected economy.

#1  Of course it was all helped by billions of TARP money that went to Euro bank investors who were holding bad American paper which the Beltway mobsters decided to honor even though there was no contractual or legal obligation to honor them. They gambled on the market, lost, and still recovered a hefty portion of their bet while shifting the loss to the American public in the form of Treasury obligations.

Cap & trade tax would raise energy prices, cost 2.4M jobs
Of course, the usual suspects are screaming bloody murder about this....

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the American Council for Capital Formation (ACCF) today unveiled a comprehensive study on the impact of The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill (HR 2454). The bill aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to cap the amount of carbon that is emitted by U.S. industry. The legislation does so by mandating a cap and trade program and other provisions governing fuel choices available to businesses and consumers. This bill passed the House of Representatives by a slim margin (219-212) earlier this summer. The Senate is expected to release its version of climate legislation in September.

The study, which was commissioned by the NAM and ACCF and conducted by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) using NAM and ACCF input assumptions, assesses the impact of the Waxman-Markey Bill on manufacturing, jobs, energy prices and our overall economy. The NAM and ACCF released national data as well as the analysis for 15 industrial states that would be impacted greatly if this or similar legislation is signed into law.

Jay Timmons, executive vice president of the NAM said, “Climate change is a very complex issue
No, it isn't, Jay. It's very simple, and we have NOTHING to do with the cyclical changes that have been happening for eons and will continue to do so no matter how stupid we get.
and I hope Senators will look closely at this study as they consider climate change legislation this fall. At a time when our country is struggling to come out of our longest and deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression, lawmakers should be focused on policies that provide incentives for businesses so they can create jobs and grow. Unfortunately, this study confirms that the Waxman-Markey Bill is an ‘anti-jobs, anti-growth’ piece of legislation.
That's not a bug for the clowns pushing this, it's a feature.
Further, leaders of countries such as China and India have made it clear they have no intention of reducing their own emissions.
Why should they? We got ours, and now they want to get theirs.
Waxman-Markey would give an edge to overseas competitors, discouraging domestic investment and the creation of American jobs.”
As I said - feature, not bug.... >:-(

Additionally, the provisions of the stimulus package passed in February are included in this study. Key findings include:

-Cumulative Loss in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) up to $3.1 trillion (2012-2030)
-Employment losses up to 2.4 million jobs in 2030
-Residential electricity price increases up to 50 percent by 2030
-Gasoline price increases (per gallon) up 26 percent by 2030

The 15 states analyzed in the initial study include Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri. North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, & Wisconsin.

Lawyers help murder accused escape
[Dawn] Living up to their repute, a group of lawyers attacked the police and got a murder accused freed soon after his bail was rejected by the Lahore High Court on Tuesday.

Besides thrashing a sub-inspector, the lawyers also snatched the official record.

Earlier, an ASI of Lahore police was treated in the same fashion by a group of lawyers at the Sessions Court on July 29 after the hearing of a girl's kidnap case in which the bail of the accused was cancelled.

Annoyed at the screening of the sessions court episode, the lawyers had thrashed cameramen and reporters twice, once outside the Aiwan-i-Adl and then on the LHC premises.

Witnesses said SI Riasat Ali of Sahianwala police station, Faisalabad district, had come to the court of the LHC chief justice along with two constables in connection with a murder case. The chief justice, after listening to the arguments of both sides, cancelled the interim bail of Ghulam Hussain who was accused of murdering his sister-in-law.

The SI, after the cancellation of bail, tried to arrest Hussain outside the LHC gate on Turner Road but two lawyers, Shahid Kahlon and Tariq Bosial, who were pleading the case of the accused, along with their fellow lawyers put up resistance against the arrest of their client, manhandled the SI, tore his uniform and snatched the record of the case.

Two constables fled the scene as the lawyers attacked them. The accused escaped with the help of the black coats. Riasat later alleged that his cell phone was also snatched by the lawyers.

A police source told Dawn that after beating the SI and getting the accused escape, the lawyers went to the LHC authorities and complained that the SI and constables had released the accused and tore the case file soon after coming out of court.

A court assistant, who witnessed the incident, informed the LHC authorities about the actual happening.

The Mozang police later registered a case against Shahid Pervaiz Kahlon and Tariq Bosial and their 10 fellow lawyers on the complaint of the SI. Sections 382, 353, 186, 147, 149, 224 and 225 of the Pakistan Penal Code were mentioned in the FIR.

Civil Lines division SP Investigation Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn that raids were conducted at the chambers of both nominated lawyers on Turner Road, but they absconded.

He said the police would arrest Shahid of Lahore and Tariq of Narowal in any case.

Punjab Bar Council office-bearers could not be reached for their comments.

Khan of Kalat raises the stakes
QUETTA: The Khan of Kalat, Mir Suleman Dawood, announced on Tuesday formation of a council for 'independent Balochistan' and rejected any reconciliation with the government of Pakistan without the mediation of European Union and United Nations.

Addressing reporters safely from London on telephone, he said the council would ensure the creation of an independent state of Balochistan. The Khan said Baloch separatist forces of Pakistan and Iran would have representation in the council.
Great -- upset both regional powers, not just one ...
He said the names of members of the council would be announced later. He, however, said that Nawabzada Baramdagh Bugti will be a member of the council, adding that he was in touch with him and other forces which stood for an independent Balochistan.
Can't have an independent Balochistan without a Bugti, just wouldn't be right ...
Replying to a question, he said that recommendations adopted at the Kalat Jirga had not been shelved. He said that a lot of progress had since been made and the issue of Balochistan had been raised at the international level. He said that some people had disassociated themselves from the recommendations.

He said he was enjoying the support of 'friendly' and 'like-minded' countries who had promised all help and cooperation.

The Khan of Kalat said the Baloch had observed their Independence Day on Tuesday because the British rulers had accepted independent and autonomous status of the Kalat state on August 11, 1947. They later announced independence of Pakistan and India on August 14 and 15.

He said the Qauid-i-Azam had negotiated Kalat's accession to Pakistan but it was rejected by the Kalat state assembly. He said Kalat was merged into Pakistan in March 1948 and in reaction Prince Agha Abdul Karim mounted a revolt.

The Khan said the Baloch had lost trust in Pakistani rulers. However, he said that if European Union and United Nations mediated then negotiations could be held with the government of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Khuzdar Engineering University was closed on Tuesday for an indefinite period. According to sources, a group of students belonging to the Baloch Students Organisation-Azad entered the university campus and tried to hoist the flag of 'independent Balochistan' on the administration building.

Law-enforcement personnel did not allow them to remove the national flag and arrested a number of students. After the incident, the administration announced the closure of the university.

Pakistani Christians stage U.N. protest
Pakistani Christians in New York demonstrated in front of the United Nations against the recent anti-Christian violence in Pakistan in which seven died.

Protest leaders Wednesday condemned last week's violence in Gojra district in the Punjab Province in which a Muslim mob, irate over alleged desecration of the Koran, attacked a Christian neighborhood. The Christians have denied the allegations. Besides seven Christians, three Muslims died in police firing to disperse the mob.

The U.N. protest leaders urged the Pakistani government to institute special measures to protect minorities in the country, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan news agency reported. They called for the repeal of Pakistan's stringent blasphemy law, which can result in death for those insulting Islam.

In a memorandum to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the protesters representing the Pakistan Christian Association in North America and the Christian Community in New York called for greater security for Christians and the release of those detained under the blasphemy law.

The Pakistan Christian Post reported Canadians of Pakistani origin held a similar demonstration in front of the Islamic Foundation Center in Toronto, while Pakistani Christians in London held a day of mourning for those killed.

The Catholic Leader reported Pope Benedict XVI deplored the killings of Christians and encouraged the minority community not be deterred by the attacks in efforts to help build a society that is marked by mutual respect among all its members.

Duch sez he deserves strictest punishment
[Straits Times] THE Khmer Rouge's main jail chief told a war crimes court on Wednesday he would like the 'strictest level of punishment' - even death by stoning - for his crimes against the Cambodian people.

Duch, whose real name is Kaing Guek Eav, is on trial for overseeing the torture and execution of about 15,000 people at Tuol Sleng detention centre in the late 1970s.

The 66-year-old told the UN-backed tribunal that the country 'can condemn me to whatever the highest level of punishment is' after his likely conviction.

'If there is a Cambodian tradition - like it existed in the past when people threw rocks at Christ to death - Cambodian people can do that to me. I would accept it,' said Duch, who converted Christianity in the 1990s.

Duch has previously accepted responsibility for his role governing the jail and begged forgiveness for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

But he has consistently rejected claims by prosecutors that he held a central leadership role in the Khmer Rouge, and says he never personally killed anyone during the brutal 1975-79 regime.

'I will accept without challenges... all judgments which will be made by this chamber, the judgment of my role as the chairman of S-21 and all the crimes committed there,' he said.

'I am humble before the Cambodian people, I accept all of these crimes and would like the Cambodian people to condemn me to the strictest level of punishment. My life is just one life and cannot compare to those lives which were lost during the period,' he added.

Led by Pol Pot, who died in 1998, the Khmer Rouge emptied Cambodia's cities in a bid to forge an agrarian utopia, resulting in the deaths of up to two million people from starvation, overwork and torture.

Speaking of those who lost family members, Duch said, 'I accept their regret, their sorrow and their suffering.'
