Killers publish video of torturing boy to death on Facebook
[Dhaka Tribune] A gruesome video of torturing Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, the 13-year-old boy who was killed in Kumargaon of Sylhet, has been leaked on the internet.

The 28-minute video that was filmed and uploaded by the criminals themselves showed how Rajon was subjected to barbaric torture before he departed this vale of tears.

Officer in-Charge of Jalalabad cop shoppe Akhter Hossain said the video was not recorded on a hidden camera. "The torturers consciously filmed the whole scene and uploaded it to Facebook," he said adding that they had sought seven-day remand for the main accused Muhit who was caught red handed while dumping Rajon's body.

The jittery video done with a mobile phone showed Rajon being tied to a pillar of Sundar Ali Market while five to six people beat and tortured him in various ways.

Every time Rajon cried out in pain, the torturers were heard to laugh loud. They even made fun poking him in his private parts.

On July 8 Muhit and his associates picked up Rajon on allegation of stealing. Later his body was found from an ambulance on the same day.

Rajon's father Sheikh Azizur Rahman, hailing from Kandigaon union, is a microbus driver. On the day of the incident, he went out with his car while Rajon went to sell vegetables.

Lubna Akter, Rajon's mother, said her son was not a thief and demanded punishment of those involved in his death.

OC Akhter Hossain said they were looking for Muhit's brother Kamrul Islam, 24, his associate Ali Haider alias Ali, 34 and security guard Moyna Mia, 45.

Rajon's father filed a case in this connection.

Robert E. Lee Statue Vandalized In Dallas Park
[DFW.CBSLOCAL] The historic monument faces to the south. It sits like a mountain of pride, a bold-bronze boulder of acknowledgement along Dallas' Turtle Creek Boulevard. It's gargantuan presence displays a towering military man on horseback , accompanied by a young soldier.

In 1936, the City of Dallas christened the sculpture as its ode to its southern secessionist sacrifice. Gen. Robert E Lee's monument, sculpted by artist A. Phimister Proctor, stands at the heart of the city park that also bears the Confederate General's name.

Friday morning, someone decided to add their own description to the sculpture.

"SHAME," emblazoned in large white spray painted letters, covered the granite base of the Gen. Lee monument. Could it be coincidence that the defacing of the sculpture occurred on the same day as the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of South Carolina's state house?

The organization built to manage and promote Lee Park won't say, but officials called the "SHAME" graffiti a criminal act.

One week prior, a Dallas advocacy group protested at Lee Park, calling for the city to "undedicate" its affinity toward public memorials for those loyal to the movement of the Confederacy. The Dallas Chapter of the NAACP has urged Mayor Mike Rawlings to create a task force to examine the elimination and removal of names of Confederate loyalists from schools, municipal buildings, city parks and cemeteries.

Baltimore Mayor Attacked: Doused With Liquid At Community Event
[Star Pulse] The mayor of Baltimore, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, is well after coming under attack at a community event over the weekend. The suspect in the water-throwing assault is in custody.

As Mayor Blake greeted locals at the Mondawmin Festival on Saturday morning, a woman charged the city leader and doused her on the head and face with a large cup of liquid.

Aides of the Baltimore mayor rushed to her side and helped dry her off with towels. Meanwhile, Rawlings-Blake's security detail subdued a woman suspected of throwing the liquid, presumably water, on the mayor.

Baltimore police took the woman into custody and booked her with second-degree assault for dousing the Baltimore City mayor with water. Sources identified the arrested woman as 37-year-old Lacheisa Pailin-Sheffer. Reporters interviewed the Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake shortly after the water attack.
The comments are worthy of a read.

'Mini ice age' coming in next 15 years, new model of the Sun's cycle shows
[Dhaka Tribune] There will be a "mini ice age" in 2030, solar scientists have said.

We are now able to predict solar cycles with far greater accuracy than ever before thanks to a new model which shows irregularities in the sun’s 11-year heartbeat.

The model shows that solar activity will fall by 60 percent between 2030 and 2040 causing a "mini ice age".
I suppose the science is settled on that one, too.

It's FAR FAR worse than that. Models re-use the outputs as inputs for the next year.

So say you're original data and model is 95% right after one week (much better than in reality)

'Offended' flea market shopper calls 911 over Confederate merchandise
[THEAMERICANMIRROR] A shopper perusing the merchandise at the Redwood Country Flea Market was so offended by a vendor selling Confederate and Nazi historical memorabilia, the person actually called 911.
None of us know what it's like. being that sensitive.
Wallingford, Connecticut police were dispatched to the flea market to investigate.
Since they had nothinbg else to do on a summer's morn...
The police chief William Wright tells News 8 "the reason no one was incarcerated
You have the right to remain silent...
was because the items were being sold on private property" -- not to mention no laws were broken.
You mean it's not against the law to advertently or inadvertently ruffle some snowflake's feelings?
"There was a table set up with this material," Wright says, according to Journal-Record. "It's not criminally illegal, but obviously it offended this person. It causes some people a sense of being uncomfortable. Certainly the owner could preclude this merchandise."
But he has no reason to. It's private property. It's a flea market. The seller follows the rules of the flea market, he sells his stuff. If you don't like it just walk by and 'tsk' loudly...
The town resident who hysterically called 911 said there were helmets with swastikas, images of Hitler and other historical Nazi items.
Why's the headline say "Confederate?" There are people who do collect WWII memorabilia. Both the Confederate and the Nazi-eras are interesting historically.
"I was shaking and almost vomiting," he tells the paper. "I had to run. My grandmother had numbers," referring to the digits the Nazis would tattoo on prisoners.
But you didn't. Way to man up...
The caller complained that the Confederate items were "not authentic" and were replicas of flags and weapons.
There hasn't been any "authentic" Confederate items since 1865 or so...
He says the seller told him "he was selling so much he can't keep it in stock."
At a yard sale? In Connecticut?
Jason Teal, president of the Meriden-Wallingford NAACP, was contacted to see what he thought.
"Ve haff vays off making you zell önly approveed items!"
"It's difficult because it's on private property and it's considered free speech," Teal says.
Probably because it is. It's under attack, but it's still free.
According to the paper, the busybody hairball complainant also called Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr., who promptly called Chief Wright.
"Hello? Is dis da mare?"
"Yes it is, sir or madam. May I help you?"
"Dey're sellin' Confederate stuff over on Oak Street! Dey're gonna secede from da union an' reinstitute slavery!"

"I had to check with the chief over what is actionable and what isn't," according to the mayor.
As soon as you venture into the field of being legally responsible for somebody else's feeling you're reaching for anarchy. Someone, somewhere is going to go to pieces at the sight of a William Henry Harrison for President button. If there's money in it, it might even be me.
"Unless something violates state or federal law, there's no jurisdiction for government to do anything. We had to ask, is it something controlled by law?"
You had to ask?
And the assistant regional director of the Anti-Defamation League in Connecticut sees a difference between authentic memorabilia and "cheap replicas" "used as symbols of hate."
There's no difference at all. If you can't have one then the other's in grave danger.
"It's unfortunate that under the law people have the right to sell these things; but it doesn't mean they should sell these things," Joshua Sayles says. "It's not a crime but I would call it hate. People look at the situation in Charleston and say it's down in the South. But this stuff is here in Connecticut."
Hate is everywhere. So is profit.

#5  A letter to the editor appeared in the local newspaper this a.m. It is as follows:

Letter: Flag was not about racism
3:00 AM, Jul 13, 2015
letters to the editor
Regarding a quote from an article stating that "the flag no longer represented the valor of Southern soldiers but the racism that led the South to separate from the United States," here's a short history lesson.

When Abraham Lincoln wrote the declaration of war against the South, there was no mention of the South's racism or that the cause was to free the slaves. Just as the War of Independence was fought, the War for Southern Independence was fought over taxation without representation. The North was constantly trying to raise taxes on Southerners through high tariffs on imported goods in order to protect the inefficient big businesses in the North. These businesses could not compete with manufactured goods from England and France, with which the South traded cotton. The South did not have factories and had to import most finished products.

England and France could produce and ship products across the Atlantic cheaper than the products of the Northern manufacturers. The Morrill Tariff was passed, more than doubling the import tax from 20 percent to 47 percent. This tax served to bankrupt many Southerners. Though the South represented only about 30 percent of the population, it paid 80 percent of the tariffs collected. Oppressive taxes, denial of states' rights to govern themselves and an unrepresentative federal government pushed the Southern states to withdraw from the Union.

The truth about the Confederate flag is that it had nothing to do with slaves or racism. The ships that brought the slaves over were sailed under the Stars and Stripes of the U.S. No Southern ship ever brought slaves into this country. One of those so-called racist Southern soldiers, who was captured and asked why he was fighting, said, "Because you're down here."

Flag was not about racism

[posted by JohnQC]

Many historians believe that, unlike the Southern political elite, Confederate enlisted soldiers cared little about the preservation of slavery but fought vigilantly against what they saw as oppression by the Northern government.

It is my own contention that if a flag deserves to be removed, it is the South Carolina State flag (that represents the state government/legislature), not the Confederate flag of the common people that deserves to be taken down.

My own thoughts on the subject:

Flag of the Common People

#14  After the Charleston attack there's been negative feedback for the ideology, traditions and symbols associated with the attacker and his motives.

After attacks motivated by islamic theocratic totalitarianism there has been positive feedback for the ideology, traditions and symbols associated with the attackers and their motives.

Contemporary mainstream Islam is no less odious than the philosophy of governance that informed the CSA. Extremist Islam (e.g.Iran, Taliban) is obviously far worse.

Why is there this stark difference in the responses?

Well the UW has a 'red Square,' and the mayor (openly gay) has diverted about $60k of 'builder impact fees (meant to improve infrastructure due to new developments) to pant several crosswalks like rainbows.

And Like CF I don't live there or even work there but do occasionally go there.

Clashes flare up in Burundi, gunmen captured
[ARABNEWS] Burundi Army has captured scores of gunnies and killed others in two days of festivities in the north, a regional governor said on Sunday, the latest flare-up of violence in a nation that emerged from civil war in 2005.

A rebel general, who was involved in a failed coup attempt in May, told Rooters this week he and his comrades were mobilising forces to topple President Pierre Nkurunziza, who has triggered a political crisis by seeking a third term in office.

Gen. Leonard Ngendakumana told French radio on Friday, when the first festivities were reported in north Burundi, his loyalists were involved. The army could not immediately be reached for comment.

The fighting is an alarming development in a region with a history of conflict, often fuelled by ethnic divisions. But an official said the latest fighting did not follow ethnic divides. The US has condemned the violence and urged dialogue.

"About 100 gunnies are in the hands of the army forces," said Anselme Nsabimana, governor of Cibitoke province, which borders both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
.

"There is no more fighting in Cibitoke. It's calm," he told Rooters, adding rebels were also killed without giving numbers.

"The gunnies are composed of all ethnic groups and are from different provinces of Burundi," the governor said, adding that many were from the capital Bujumbura, the scene of weeks of protests against Nkurunziza.

Russian barracks collapse kills 23 soldiers near Omsk
[BBC] A section of a Russian military barracks has collapsed, killing 23 soldiers near the Siberian city of Omsk, officials say. A further 19 servicemen have been pulled alive from the rubble. Five others are missing.

There were more than 300 soldiers in the training facility for paratroopers when the accident happened overnight. The building underwent repairs a year ago. It is suspected that poor quality work may have caused the collapse.

An investigation into possible negligence has been launched.

All 19 soldiers pulled out of the rubble alive were injured, and the most seriously hurt were taken to Moscow for treatment. One survivor, shown on Russian television, said troops just gone to bed when the four-storey building began collapsing on top of them.

President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences.

Aussie PM Tony Abbott Cancels All Gov't Wind Farm Subsidies
[Breitbart] Australia has slammed the door shut on any new government-funded investment in renewable energy schemes as Prime Minister Tony Abbott extends his "war on wind power".

In doing so Mr Abbott has sent a clear message to the mendicant green renewable energy sector that there will be no more cheap state-supplied financing for its projects.

Fairfax Media reports Mr Abbott's conservative coalition government has ordered the taxpayer-funded $10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) to immediately cease any new investments in wind power projects. Treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann issued the so-called green bank with a directive to change its investment strategy.

The funding ban is just the latest salvo in the government's attacks on the renewable energy sector which also includes small-scale solar projects.

Some Ford auto production lines may be heading to Mexico
[Detroit News] Ford Motor Co.'s decision to end production of two slow-selling models at its Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, confirmed Thursday, signals the critical role Mexico is likely to play in high-stakes wrangling with the United Auto Workers.

The Dearborn automaker said it was reviewing "several possible options" for production of the slow-selling Focus compact and C-Max hybrids, which would end in Wayne in 2018. But in a bulletin handed out to UAW members at the plant, Local 900 Chairman Bill Johnson said production of the Focus would move "to a location outside of the United States," most likely Mexico.

The move comes days before Ford, and its crosstown rivals, are set to begin national contract talks with the UAW. A key issue for Ford, as well as General Motors Co., will be closing their all-in labor cost gap, executives say, and one of the leverage points in bargaining and contract ratification is expected to be the real threat of moving some production to Mexico.

Ford and GM both are investing heavily in their Mexican operations, partly to exert pressure on the UAW to hold the line on labor costs and partly to take advantage of lower wages and more favorable trade agreements. In April, Ford said it would invest $2.5 billion in Mexico for two engine and transmission plants, creating 3,800 jobs.

Euro leaders tentatively agree to more 'free stuff' for Greece
[WAPO] ATHENS -- Greece acquiesced early Monday to a punishing ultimatum from European leaders, agreeing to lightning-fast passage of reforms and a pledge to strap itself in a fiscal straightjacket to save its banks and stay in the euro.

After a marathon, 17-hour overnight session -- one of the most contentious diplomatic standoffs in European Union history -- the announcement of an unanimous deal was made in Brussels. It requires approval from several European parliaments.

Euro zone ministers demand more from Greece for loan talks
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Skeptical euro zone finance ministers demanded on Saturday that Greece go beyond painful austerity measures accepted by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras if he wants them to open negotiations on a third bailout for his bankrupt country to keep it in the euro.

Ministers lined up to vent their anger at Tsipras on arrival at their umpteenth emergency weekend meeting on Greece's acute debt crisis, with Athens staring into an economic abyss when financial markets reopen on Monday unless it wins fresh aid.

EU officials forecast a deal would be reached by the end of the weekend to keep Greece afloat, but two sources said there was consensus among the other 18 ministers that the leftist government in Athens must take further steps to convince them it would honor any new debts.

Tsipras won parliamentary backing early on Saturday for a tough reform package thon the lamly mirrored measures previously demanded by its international creditors but rejected by Greek voters at his behest in a referendum last Sunday.

Wolfgang Schaeuble, finance minister of its biggest creditor Germany and a stickler for the EU's fiscal rules, said negotiations would be "exceptionally difficult".

Emerging optimism about Greece had been "destroyed in an incredible way in the last few months" since Tsipras won power, Schaeuble said.

A German newspaper reported that his ministry was suggesting that Greece either improve its proposals quickly and transfer state assets worth 50 billion euros into a fund to pay down debt, or take a five-year "time-out" from the euro zone.

The German Finance Ministry declined to comment on the report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. But several officials said no one raised the possibility of a Greek euro exit in the meeting, which took a pause after three hours.

Other ministers arriving for the Eurogroup session spoke of a fundamental lack of trust after years of broken Greek promises and six months of erratic and provocative behavior by the radical leftist Tsipras government.

"We are still far away," said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister who was chairing the meeting. "On both content and the more complicated question of trust, even if it's all good on paper the question is whether it will get off the ground and will it happen ... We are facing a difficult negotiation."

Olde Tyme Religion
Arctic Ramadan: How do you break fast if sun does not set?
[ARABNEWS] In the Canadian city of Iqaluit, laborers are working long hours to finish the region's first mosque before winter. And they're doing so while fasting for almost 22 hours.

Summertime means longer across the Northern Hemisphere. But it is particularly challenging for the thousands who live near the Arctic Circle, where the sun barely sets.

In Iqaluit, one of Canada's northernmost cities, dusk begins around 11 p.m. By about 2 a.m., the sun is up again. In St. Petersburg, daylight lasts at least 21 hours. In Stockholm, the sun sets at 1 a.m. and rises just 2 1/2 hours later. The land of the midnight sun does not offer much time for repast.

About 600,000 Moslems live in the Nordic countries. Canada's Moslem population numbers around 1 million. Some decide to adhere to the sunrise and sunset hours of nearby, more southern cities, says Hussain Guisti, general manager and chief financial officer of the Zubaidah Tallab Foundation, a Canadian charity. In Iqaluit, that would mean fasting between about 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., as Moslems do in Ottawa. But other members of the community prefer to keep to the long hours of their locale, set by the religious leaders. "I think it's a sign of being more serious," Guisti says.

In Iqaluit, residents have begun to nap after work because the window for fast breaking is so small and so late at night. Other Moslem communities have come up with a different solution. In Inuvik, Canada, home to the northernmost mosque in the Western Hemisphere, there is currently daylight 24 hours a day.

Abdullah Mohammed, a member of the mosque who immigrated to Canada from Sudan in 1991, says his community has adopted the fasting and prayer hours of Makkah.

The members of the mosque fast for the same number of hours and pray at the same intervals as worshipers in Makkah, resulting in a more traditional 13-hour day.

Mohammed says members of the mosque community determined the hours they would keep for Ramadan together, after a debate. Getting everyone on the same page was important, he explained, so that all at the aptly named Midnight Sun Mosque could eat and pray together.

The heroic mine clearing critters of Africa that are helping to save thousands
[spiritandanimal.wordpress.com] Throughout the world, places that have been involved in war and/or civil strife often have large minefields that still need clearing. In 2013, it was estimated that there was a global average of around nine mine-related deaths every day. The situation is especially dire in Africa.

Typically, clearing a minefield involves men in body armor walking in very precise lines with metal detectors. Anything (from a rusty nail to an old ammo cartridge) that sets the detectors off must be investigated before moving on. A new method of bomb detection using rats, however, is flipping this process on its head.

A Belgian NGO called APOPO
has developed a way to train African pouched rats (named for the storage pouch in their cheeks) to sniff out bombs quickly and safely.
I could be mistaken, but isn't that lad eating the plantain wearing a County Cork tartan harness ?
