Supreme Court BLOCKS Purdue Pharma settlement that would have shielded Sackler family from being sued over deaths caused by Oxycontin in return for $6 billion payout
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Sacklers planned $6 billion settlement has been halted by justices

  • They hoped paying the huge sum would shield them from civil lawsuits

  • Family owns Purdue Pharma, whose drug Oxycontin fueled opioid deaths

#1  I don't understand why people blame the pharmaceutical companies. My recent bought with shingles and my pain with kidney stones are aleviated by opioids. I know there are many people who easily become addicted to them but sueing the pharmaceutical companies does not seem to me to be in any way helpful. Do people sue alcoholic beverage companies for alcoholism?

#3  We really don't have a good answer--or any answer at all, really, for people with pain. My wife has needed opioids several times, and they have been a godsend. We've had to jump through several hoops each time because of politicians screeching "Opioid crisis" and bureaucrats reacting with ridiculous rules.

But as to why people sue the pharmaceutical companies, I would say that the answer is that's where the money is.

#4  Ditto to all above. Gout and Gall stones and Lung infection have taught me the true meaning of pain.

Between Oxy and Prednizone I survived. Just take them as prescribed, don't get into the self medicating mode.

#5  I think the issue with Perdue was that they could see what was happening, how their drug was being abused, and just went along for the ride, if not actively exacerbating the situation.

Southern Indiana wife comes to the aid of husband
[Blaze] A wife reportedly saw a man drive through her southern Indiana front yard Monday night, exit the vehicle, force her husband to the ground, and point a gun at his head.

With that, she grabbed her own gun and shot the man dead, WDRB-TV reported.

#1  What makes the shooting even more strange.

Google street view and Aerial-Sat map shows its very Rural, farm/pasture type area. Maybe at best 5 houses to a mile.

Friends of Chastain, (the dead guy) claimed he and the homeowner knew each other. Even the friends said the situation is very odd, and the given account of the shooting doesn’t make sense.

Sounds like a family/personal matter motivated incident.

S&P Global drops ESG alphanumeric scale
[Reuters] S&P Global has dropped an alphanumeric scale it launched in 2021 to score publicly rated entities in some sectors and asset classes on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors when assessing their credit quality.

"We have determined that the dedicated analytical narrative paragraphs in our credit rating reports are most effective at providing detail and transparency on ESG credit factors material to our rating analysis, and these will remain integral to our reports," it said in a statement released on Friday.

S&P Global, which is one of the world's largest raters of corporate debt, said the decision would take effect "immediately".

Megyn Kelly slams 'loser' Megan Rapinoe for laughing after World Cup loss: 'More concerned about her Nike checks'
[NYPOST] Megyn Kelly was outraged that Megan Rapinoe appeared to be laughing and smiling after missing a crucial penalty kick in the US women’s team’s stunning ouster from the World Cup.

Rapinoe, the 38-year-old veteran and lightning rod over her activism, sailed her kick wide of the net, and the US was bounced from the quarterfinals by Sweden 5-4 in Sunday’s sudden-death shootout.

"She couldn’t execute," the former news anchor told listeners of her SiriusXM podcast "The Megyn Kelly Show" on Tuesday,

"She was too focused on her wokeism, it trickled down to her troops, and now they’re losers."

Rapinoe has been vocal on hot-button issues such as kneeling during the playing of the national anthem as well as allowing transgender women to play alongside biological women in sporting events.

Kelly called Rapinoe "the Mark Milley of soccer" — a reference to the country’s top military officer who has been criticized by conservatives for placing too much emphasis on "wokeness" in the armed forces.

#1  Rapinoe: We should be paid the same as men.
Men: Stormtroopers

Just wanted to take a second to point out, it was her very activism which secured her a spot on the team which should have gone to a younger, more qualified player.

This all is not about bringing people up or about rights. It is about them protecting their paycheck.
Posted by: swksvolFF || 08/11/2023 12:25 Comments || Top||

#2  I didn’t want to watch them, but I have followed the team from the Mia Hamm beginnings of the team up until Rapinoe started kneeling and dunking her hair in KoolAid. So I did watch them play the Netherlands for a half. The team was out coached and the talent level of the European based players is better than the American pool. Rapinoe was the Lebron James of the team and ruined most of the goodwill that they had built up, but American dominance of women’s soccer is over and done regardless of her antics. The USA should be ranked in the lower half of the top ten going forward.

Hawaii: Maui wildfires death toll rises to 36
[GEO.TV] Officials in Hawaii's Maui County said Thursday at least 36 lives have been claimed as deadly wildfires sweep across the area, forcing authorities to start evacuating people.

"As the firefighting efforts continue, 36 total fatalities have been discovered today amid the active Lahaina fire," the Maui county government said in a statement.

Maui County said more than 100 firefighters at any one time are battling the active wildfires on the island, where winds were finally abating Wednesday night, Hawaii News Now reported.

There are no further details about the 36 deceased people but residents are turning to social media to look at their loved ones.

Authorities have opened five evacuation shelters on Maui. Officials earlier said they were "overrun" with people. The island is a popular tourist destination and visitors have been urged to stay away.

Hawaii Lt Governor Sylvia Luke told news hounds: "This is not a safe place to be. We have resources that are being taxed."

"We just had the worst disaster I've ever seen. All of Lahaina is burnt to a crisp. It's like an apocalypse," resident Mason Jarvi told Rooters.

On Wednesday, At least six people died and scores of others left Maui County after wind-fueled wildfires destroyed hundreds of buildings in the historical town of Lahaina.

Sturgis attendees shun Budweiser booth
[Breitbart] The Anheuser-Busch brand suffered another blow this week when it appeared that few (if any) people visited the Budweiser tent at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Video of the empty Budweiser tent quickly began circulating on social media Thursday, showing what appeared to be a vacant lot of branded booths.
Video at the link shows the booth was staffed. I'm sure "fact checkers" will report the video was shot while the booth was not operating.
Budweiser declared itself the official sponsor of this year’s motorcycle event. Per the website:

Budweiser and its local distributor, Quality Brands of the Black Hills, are proud to be the Official Malt Beverage Sponsor of the 83rd Annual — City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Through their combined efforts you will see:

  • Custom Sturgis / Budweiser signage and;

  • Our mutual donations to local charities that raise money for the Black Hills area.

The local Budweiser distributor, Quality Brands of the Black Hills, has been associated with The Rally for more than 50 years. Budweiser and its distributor partners are long-time supporters of motorcycle events nationwide.

Breaking: U.S. judge sends Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over witness tampering
[NBC] I figured they'd give him bond and he'd flee. Looks like he's too big an asshole for even his corrupt Democrat friends to cover for. Give him the Epstein cell.
Since his arrest in December, Bankman-Fried had been out on a $250 million bail.

Sam Bankman-Fried will head to jail on Friday after a judge sided with a request by federal prosecutors to revoke the FTX founder’s bail over alleged witness tampering. Bankman-Fried will be remanded to custody directly from a court hearing in New York, where he will remain ahead of his criminal trial — which is due to begin on Oct. 2.

Judge Lewis Kaplan denied Bankman-Fried’s request for delayed detention pending an appeal.

Since his arrest in December, Bankman-Fried had been out on a $250 million bail package which requires him to remain at his parents’ Palo Alto, California house.

Bankman-Fried’s court appearance on Friday is the latest in a series of pre-trial hearings related to the ex-billionaire’s continued dealings with the press — exchanges which the Justice Department characterizes as a "pattern of witness tampering and evading his bail conditions."

Judge Kaplan previously issued a direct and stern warning to Bankman-Fried in July over his conversations with the media.

Members of the press, including counsel for The New York Times and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, had filed letters objecting to Bankman-Fried’s detention, citing free speech concerns. Defense attorneys had similarly argued that Bankman-Fried was asserting his first amendment right and did not violate any terms of his bail conditions by speaking with journalists.

The defense had also been hoping that the discovery process would help Bankman-Fried’s case.
Really? Why?
Lawyers representing the former FTX chief stipulated that with Bankman-Fried jailed, he would not be able to properly prepare for his trial due to the mountainous amounts of discovery documents only accessible via a computer with internet access.
Don’t be absurd — that’s why printers were invented.<

Olde Tyme Religion
White supremacist charged with threatening jurors, witnesses in Tree of Life trial
Vicious coward getting his jollies threatening from the anonymity of a keyboard... in support of a murderer who is schizophrenic.
[IsraelTimes] West Virginia man arrested for obstruction of justice in Pittsburgh synagogue shooting case; praised the shooter and Hitler, said Jews should be ’wiped out’

Federal agents arrested a West Virginia man on Thursday for allegedly threatening jurors and witnesses in the trial of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter, which culminated last week in a death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
The man who was arrested, Hardy Lloyd, 45, is "a self-proclaimed ’reverend’ of a white supremacy
...the pernicious doctrine that laws were intended to be obeyed, that society works better when people don't pour shreiking from their places of worship every Friday for a weekend of rioting over insults real or imagined; and that cannibalism, beastiality, incest, murder, theft, rape, and similar activities are bad. A Dead White European (which invalidates his opinion) philosopher once opined that societies thrive when a person's word can be relied upon, and that a society which puts individual happiness first will invariably fail. Strangely enough, other successful societies, such as China, Japan, Korea, and those kinds of places could also be lumped with white supremacist societies, since they push the same values...
movement," according to a statement from the US Attorney’s office in the northern district of West Virginia. The statement said Lloyd "made threatening social media posts, website comments, and emails towards the jury and witnesses during the trial." He is charged with obstruction of justice, witness tampering and transmitting threats in interstate and foreign commerce.

"Jury trials are a hallmark of the American justice system and attempts to intimidate witnesses or jurors will be met with a strong response," US Attorney William Ihlenfeld said in the statement. "The use of hateful threats in an effort to undermine a trial is especially troubling."

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh welcomed the arrest. It said Lloyd had also targeted survivors of the 2018 attack, the victims’ families and employees of the federation and Secure Community Network, a nonprofit that coordinates security for Jewish institutions.

"The offender in this case targeted the Jewish community for years with hate, vitriol and calls for violence," Michael Masters, the CEO of the Secure Community Network, said in a statement. "The offender sought to terrorize the community. We now seek justice and accountability."

According to the federation and Masters’ group, Lloyd extolled Robert Bowers, the man who carried out the attack at the Tree of Life synagogue building, killing 11 worshipers.

Lloyd’s statements allegedly referred to Squirrel Hill, the neighborhood where the shooting took place, which has a reputation for being tight-knit and friendly. It was also the home neighborhood of the late Fred Rogers, the longtime children’s TV host.

"All jews must be murdered. The jew race MUST be wiped out...So, target jews as BOWERS did ..." one of Lloyd’s threats allegedly read, according to the federation and Secure Community Network. They said another of his threats read, "make the myths of Hitler seem like Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood ... start kidnapping jews and torturing them to death."

Wheeling, West Virginia, Lloyd’s hometown, is within commuting distance from Pittsburgh. Lloyd allegedly left stickers in heavily Jewish areas of Pittsburgh directing people to his website.

He has long been known to law enforcement for harassing the Jewish community and has been sentenced to prison three times, the local CBS affiliate reported. He was most recently released in 2020, according to the Jewish federation and Secure Community Network.

Last year, the Texas Department of Public Safety offered a $1,000 award for information leading to the arrest of Lloyd, who was wanted in the state for making terroristic threats.

'Nightmare Frustration': Family Gives Up On Lightning EV Mid-Road Trip, Rents Gas Guzzler
[Daily Caller] Here’s some comedy for ya.

Meet Dalbir Bala. He bought a 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat that features an extended-range battery, and he now regrets it after trying to take it on a road trip and being forced to finish the trip in a gas-powered rental vehicle.

Because of course.

From La Salle, Canada, Bala abandoned his truck last month in Minnesota after he tried — and failed — to charge the truck’s battery at two charging stations.

"It was really a nightmare frustration for us," Bala said.

Advertised as having a range of 320 miles (515 kilometers), he bought the truck back in January for $115,000. Bala put in an additional $16,000 to install chargers at his house, as well as his trucking business, and he also upgraded his residential electrical panel.

In other words, it was an incredible waste of money.
