Today's idiot: Pat Buchanan blames Poland for WW2
Buchanan's essay, which argues that Hitler did not want war! is disgusting enough; some of his commenters are making coded--and not-so-coded--references to the "moneyed interests" that were supposedly manipulating things behind the scenes.

Apparently, Pitchfork Pat has never heard of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Link takes you to Jonathan Adler at National Review, who laments:

Some chap has taken over Pat Buchanan's website and posted a parody essay . . . It is a parody, right?

#1  I guess Pat was concerned that we had forgotten how luny he can be. Don't worry Pat, your reputation as a nutcase is safe for a long time now.

#2  OMFG ...
Can we here and now declare that Pat Buchanan has finally, completely and totally jumped the shark?
Slipped his moorings, gone ga-ga, wandered off into the wilderness?
Can we please not pay any attention to him, any more?

#3  Pat has been off the reservation for a long, long time.

I punch anyone who thinks Pat has any credibility left.

#5  But where is the evidence that Adolf Hitler, whose victims as of March 1939 were a fraction of Gen. Pinochet’s, or Fidel Castro’s, was out to conquer the world?

Is this Chamberlain's ghost? C'mon Pat, the Third Reich sought to rule the world!

#6  Oh, and that nasty little thingy about Lebensraum predating 1939 by a long time.

In 1914, the concept of Lebensraum was endorsed secretly by the Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg and the rest of the German government as a war aim in World War I. Documents discovered by the German historian Fritz Fischer have established that in the event of a German victory, the policy of the German government was to annex Congress Poland, expel the entire Polish population, both Catholic and Jewish, and in their place settle millions of Germans as a part of a scheme for the German colonization of Eastern Europe[4][5]. The significance of Fischer's discovery, as the Australian historian John Moses has noted, is that the goal of winning lebensraum was already German policy long before 1933 and thus cannot be seen, as some German historians have argued, as solely Adolf Hitler's personal brain-child[6]

#8  I listened to a book here recently by one of the hosts of Crossfire (I am terrible with names).

He met Buchanan and got the tour around the 'church'

Apparently his 'church' revolves around Pat getting a LOT of air time and the guy will ALWAYS go to a requested interview. Even if he knows NOTHING about the subject.

Won't rewrite it, as I'm off to bed, but OT suggestion : anyway one could find somewhere a list of the keywords that make comments disappear?? It's pretty frustrating; i don't believe it would be a "loose lips sink ships" situation if somewhere in the sidebar there was a link to a list of the words to avoid.

Arabia
Victory from God and Imminent Triumph
[Asharq al-Aswat] I do not know which religion they belong to, or which doctrine they follow, but these terrorists are definitely different from us. The latest catastrophe, which was the assassination attempt on Assistant Minister of the Interior, Prince Mohammed Bin Naif Bin Abdulaziz, at his house, amidst his family, during the holy month of Ramadan, only serves to reflect these terrorists' principles of treachery and treason. In an attempt to moderate feelings, this group has become known as the deviant group, however I insist on calling them the oppressive group, because all that this group pursues is murder, betrayal, and bloodshed. This is a group that must be fought mercilessly and without leniency.

This recent attempt was not just the targeting of a Prince or official, and is therefore not a "special" matter for the Saudi government or Royal family alone, rather this was an assassination attempt that affects every Saudi citizen without exception because the terrorists have deliberately and brazenly attempted to raise the stakes in the conflict without any regard for moral or religious principles.

What religion are they trying to outbid? What vision are they attempting to install?

How evil are the things which they have said and done! They have only strengthened the people's belief in their country, and strengthened the people's determination to eradicate this "cancer" which has spread widely and infected sheikhs, businessman, students, and even housewives. Their minds have been drugged, and their hearts hardened until they have all gone astray, killing their own brothers and sparking panic in their homeland.

Where is the honor in that? What glory have they attained?

How evil are the things which they have said and done! More than any time before, the war on terrorism is ongoing, and there is no choice but to ruthlessly and relentlessly destroy them. We must bravely eradicate the poisonous and deadly sources that this oppressive group has based its ideology upon, such as fatwas, [religious] opinions, and books which incite against the government and call for the differentiating and takfir of people of one nation, and one religion.

How evil are the things which they have said and done!

Yes, these are enemies of the State, the public, the government, and most importantly of all, enemies of religion itself. They have become unbelievers of all the teachings of tolerance mentioned in the Holy Quran and taught by the Prophet. Indeed "You shall have your religion, and I shall have my religion" [Surat al-Kafiroon, Verse 6].

The assassination attempt on Prince Mohammed Bin Naif has raised the stakes in the confrontation of these villains to an unprecedented level. This is a new level of confrontation that requires concerted effort by everybody. I hope that we do not deal with these terrorists with kid gloves because their acts of treachery and treason should be responded to in turn.

It is obvious that such a despicable assassination attempt took place in response to the enormous successes achieved recently by the Saudi security authorities, with regards to the arrest of 44 key suspects that formed a large terrorism financing and operations network. When these suspects were arrested, they were discovered to be plotting to carry out major terrorist operations [throughout Saudi Arabia]. The recent security achievements represented a slap in the faces of the terrorists, and Prince Mohammed Bin Naif himself was behind this success.

And so once again, this treacherous assassination attempt was not just against Prince Mohammed Bin Naif, but against all Saudis, and May God Protect Saudi Arabia from evil.

Prince Mohammed Bin Naif became an icon in the fight against terrorism in Saudi Arabia, and his survival of this assassination attempt is a signal from God that the fight against terrorism should continue, and that victory is imminent, God willing. The Saudi Arabian public experienced a difficult night when the news of this assassination attempt was first circulated. The Saudi public, offered prayers for the safety of the Prince, and these became prayers of gratitude and relief when the news of his safety was announced. Yet true joy will not be achieved until - God willing - this oppressive group is exterminated.

Prince Mohammed Bin-Naifs Role Against Terrorism
[Asharq al-Aswat] Asharq Al-Awsat- "Caution begins in one's own sanctuary" is a popular Arab saying that the targeting of Prince Mohammed Bin-Naif, the deputy interior minister for security affairs, has shown to be true.

He is the man that has been called "the friend of the penitents that are wanted by the security authorities" in view of the services he renders them to facilitate their return to their homes and their senses. His magnanimity went so far as to welcome them in his own home. The security incidents in Saudi Arabia - since the series of successful and painful blows that began in 2003 and that were dealt to the depth of the radical groups - should have made Prince Mohammed Bin-Naif the powerful and primary enemy of the terrorist groups in the country. Instead, he became "the close and helpful friend" of all the groups that renounced their aggressive and deviant ideologies and that withdrew from the networks whose members became systematically involved in targeting Saudi Arabia and its military and civilian installations.

The deputy interior minister is known to be a man that follows up on all the social and humanitarian issues to protect the families of the detainees from homelessness and despair. His adoption of the two children of the wanted Abdul-Rahman al-Mutib -- despite the fact that the father is still in hiding - is another good example of "pardon when you can". Before that, Prince Mohammed Bin-Naif welcomed the wanted Ali al-Faqasi al-Ghamidi, named on the first list of 19 wanted men known as the "The Seville Cell", and the wanted Abdallah Bin-Atiyah Bin-Hudayd al-Salmi and helped in facilitating their surrender to the security organs. The man who expertly clipped the wings of terrorism did his best to strengthen the social ties of the wanted individuals that surrendered. He devoted his time to attend their happy social occasions and also remained in touch with them. In fact, he was so concerned for them that he allocated monthly stipends for them and for their family members so they could rejoin the social fabric of Saudi society.

#1  There are probably some members of the Saudi "Royal Family" whose proudest hour wouldn't be as a centerpiece of a funeral---I just can't think of a name at present.

#2  "...that despite all the marathon sessions to persuade the terrorists to surrender and renounce their sinister ideas; despite all the arduous efforts that the deputy interior minister for security affairs exerted in dealing with the wanted terrorists humanely and kindly; and despite re-admitting several others that were detained abroad, some members of Al-Qaeda were indifferent and responded to fraternity and chivalry with treachery and betrayal."

Yup.

#3  One man's treachery and betrayal is another man's cleverness, about which the prince has pondered in the secret fastness of his heart on a great many previous occasions, I suspect.

#2  A lot of generals need to be retired. Micromanagement creates a 'mother may I' non-initiative military. The ultimate model of the Soviet scientific military. The one major edge American and its Anglo allies have has been the NCO corps. This kills that advantage. It destroys initiative and decision making at the lowest level.

What are you going to do when you face an opponent who is not a squad here or a platoon there, but a whole front? It's been seen at the NTC and its brethren. Decision overload of the micro-manager. A system trained in 'mother may I' can't respond. Nor can it be 'grown' on the fly.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 09/02/2009 10:33 Comments || Top||

#3  A big dividing line in the army happens between the ranks of Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, and General. Practically speaking, Colonel is the highest ranking "command" officer, and General is a "liaison" officer with higher military and civilian command.

This is as important as a distinction between NCOs and officers, as far as responsibilities go. When a Colonel is promoted to Brigadier, he must make a personality change as drastic as when a senior NCO becomes a 2nd Lieutenant.

Almost needless to say, few Colonels are able to trade working with "the men", to flying a desk and attending cocktail parties with congressmen's wives. And especially *not* saying what they are really thinking.

In a terrible irony, hard charging combat branch Colonels are most in demand to be Generals, while at the same time, often least suited as a group for those jobs. And those that are, are very hard on each other, intellectually and emotionally.

Then, at that rank, they have to take whatever circumstances have offered them, because no matter what happens, they have only one chance at doing their job before retirement.

#4  From the preface of JFC Fuller's Generalship: Its Diseases and Their Cure

IN the summer of 1921 I was lunching at the Restaurant la Rue with the Deputy Chief of the French General Staff when he told me the following story:

At the battle of Waterloo, Colonel Clement, an infantry commander, fought with the most conspicuous bravery; but unfortunately was shot through the head. Napoleon, hearing of his gallantry and misfortune, gave instructions for him to be carried into a farm where Larrey the surgeon-general was operating.

One glance convinced Larrey that his case was desperate, so taking up a saw he removed the top of his skull and placed his brains on the table.

Just as he bad finished, in rushed an aide-de-camp, shouting - 'Is General Clement here?'

Clement, hearing him, sat up and exclaimed: 'No! but Colonel Clement is.'

"Oh, mon général' cried the aide-decamp, embracing him, 'the Emperor was overwhelmed when we heard of your gallantry, and has promoted you on the field of battle to the rank of General.'

Clement rubbed his eyes, got off the table, clapped the top of his skull on his head and was about to leave the farm, when Larrey shouted after him: 'Mon général - your brains!' To which the gallant Frenchman, increasing his speed, shouted back: 'Now that I am a general I shall no longer require them!'
