Joe Klein on bureaucrats and political parties
Found this column recently; he published it in early May. Here's the money quote:
And then there is the nature of the bureaucracy itself. Three types of people tend to seek government work: idealists, those looking for sinecures and those who want to build lucrative private-sector careers based on their knowledge of government regulations. All three types present problems. There is a pretty good, but not overpowering, reason government workers are hard to fire: they need to be protected from political pressure. But that protection inevitably produces regulators who, as in a recent notorious case at the Securities and Exchange Commission, spend more time watching porn than riding herd on Wall Street. Too many of their colleagues who are not watching porn are building expertise that will enable them to beat the regulatory system when they exit the revolving door into private finance. Even the idealists, who are prominent in places like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), can cause trouble if they are naive and inflexible in their enforcement of rules and regulations.

Should BP nuke its leaking well?

#1  YES

#2  unbelievably stupid. A crater making the leak deeper in the seabed, with radiation that will last for years, and if they were to do this to where a "pile of rocks covered the leak, would only mean the oil will seep around and through the pile... How dumb has mankind gotten in only a few short years??? This is what you get when you replace higher collegiant learning with useless liberal dogma in universities.

#3  Notice that there are no geologists with deep sea and explosives experience speaking out for this. And the Russians admit they weren't successful; that's why they don't use the procedure any longer.

#4  Hell yes, make it so. All the worriers aren't thinking big enough. Make it a BIIIIIIIIIIIG one, like a MOAB only ever so much more so. Any kinda luck at all it would light off the Lake-of-Oil and show the world what a Sea 'O Fire really looks like.

The 4th is Sunday, think of it as Gawd's own Fireworks.

#8  "THE BOOK OF ELI" Movie > Twasn't a "WAR" that "BLEW A HOLE IN THE SKY"???

Lest we fergit, NICHOLAS CAGE'S "KNOWING" > NASA's 2013 SOLAR STORM THREAT-TO-TECHS/CIVILIZATION WARNINGS.

Iff what the NET says is correct as per the DEPTH-N-BREADTH, VOLATILITY + VULNERABILITY, OF THE UNDERSEA OIL FIELD(S) FUELING THE GULF OIL GUSH, IFF THE NUKE-THE-GUSH PERTS ARE WRONG = the pre-OWG future OWG may accidentally ignite the GREATEST EXPLOSION OF ALL TIME, NATURAL OR MAN-MADE.

"KRAKATOA" + GREAT EPOCHS/EXTINCTION EVENTS SPACE ROCK BOOMS, ETC. would be MERE CUTEY-PIE, NEWBORN "BABY/GESTATIONAL WOMB BURPS".

May NOT need a TEHAS/TEXAS-SIZED ASTEROID or DESTABILZ LUNAR ORBIT to alter = change that of Earth.

* Lest we fergit II, OWG-NWO "APOCALYPTIC" IRONY + "MIRACLE AT FATIMA" [Dance of the Sun] > To save the EARTH = HUMANITY from destructive SOLAR STORMS/FLARES, to include but limited to SOLAR EXPANSION-CONTRACTION, ONE WAY TO DO SO IS TO CHANGE THE EARTH'S ORBIT RELATIVE TO ANY CHANGES IN THE SUN'S MASS + SIZE.

"FATIMA" > SECULARISM + SCIENCE > says it can't + couldn't be the SUN that "danced", ergo could only be the EARTH that was moving = "dancing", NOT THE [static]SUN, Correct???

IOW, PERT ASTRO-SOLAR UNCERTAINTY > A SCENARIO EXISTS such that it may be in Earth's survival interests to STOP NASA FROM SENDING BRUCE WILLIS + BAD/ROUGH BOYZ from going to that certain Texas-sized asteroid.

[VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA = The USA + UNO trying to stop the USS SEAVIEW from reaching the MARIANAS to save Earth from the fiery VAN ALLEN RADIATION BELTS].

D *** NG IT, MORIARITY, THE "SEAVIEW" CAN'T FIRE ON ANOTHER US SUB!

["VOYAGE" Theme here].

AL "DEVIL'S ADVOCATE" PACINO would agree > [God]THE MAN UPSTAIRS, SON, IS THE GREATEST VOYEUR, ETC = DIALECTIC GLOBALIST + POPCORN EATER OF US ALL!

#10  I have heard the surrounding geologic environment to the well described as "poorly cemented pourous sandstone." I don't know if there's a database for nuclear detonations in such an environment while a high-pressure stream of oil is going through it.

The soviet experiments in this nature were apparently all in much more cohesive materials, and were still only successful 80% of the time.

It sounds like the perfect solution for all those people who feed their social insecurity checks into the nickel slot machines. Know anyone who's gotten rich doing that?

#11  One more thing: I am starting to be convinced that the whole "nuke the well" push, along with all of the apocalyptic scenarios that are being foisted about the blowout ending all life in the gulf/gulf states/oceans/planet... are all just propaganda.

While we are faced with the idiotic scenarios, both the ones they make up and the ones they want to cause, less people are actually focusing on the government's negligence in actually bothering to contain and clean up the spill, and in keeping others from attempting to do same. The whole "Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry Blowout!" scenario basically absolves Zero of any responsibility for, say, not allowing the use of centrifugal separators or skimmers such as the "Whale A" or whatever it's called, and all the other passive-aggressive bullshit he's done.

Robert C. Byrd: "a powerful man who abandoned his bigoted principles in order to keep power"
Jonah Goldberg, National Review

It is a good rule of thumb not to speak ill of the dead. But what to do when a man is celebrated beyond the limits of decorum or common sense? Must we stay silent as others celebrate the beauty and splendor of the emperor’s invisible clothes?

You probably know why I ask the question. Robert Byrd, the longest-serving member of the Senate in American history, died Monday. It was truly a remarkable career. But what’s more remarkable is how he has been lionized by the champions of liberalism.

...The common interpretation is that Byrd’s is a story of redemption. A one-time Exalted Cyclops of the KKK, Byrd recruited some 150 members to the chapter he led — that’s led, not “joined,” by the way. (If you doubt his commitment to the cause, try to recruit 150 people to do anything, never mind have them pay a hefty fee up front.)

Byrd filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act. As Bruce Bartlett notes in his book Wrong on Race, Byrd knew he would fail, but he stood on bedrock principle that integration was evil. His individual filibuster, the second longest in American history, fills 86 pages of fine print in the Congressional Record. “Only a true believer,” writes Bartlett, “would ever undertake such a futile effort.”

Unlike some segregationists’, Byrd’s arguments rested less on the principle of states’ rights than on his conviction that black people were simply biologically inferior. Sure, he lied for years about his repudiation of the Klan. Sure, he was still referring to “white niggers” as recently as 2001. But everyone agrees his change of heart is sincere. And for all I know, it was.

What’s odd is what passes for proof of his sincerity. Yes, he voted to make Martin Luther King Day a holiday. But to listen to some eulogizers, the real proof came in the fact that he supported ever more lavish government programs — and opposed the Iraq War. Am I alone in taking offense at the idea that supporting big government and opposing the Iraq War somehow count as proof of racial enlightenment?

Robert Byrd was a complicated man, but the explanation for the outsized celebration of his career strikes me as far more simple. He was a powerful man who abandoned his bigoted principles in order to keep power. And his party loved him for it.

#1  Byrd realized that the Democrat's soft racism brings better results and provides a better absolution cover.

#5  The 1st black President said:

"He once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, what does that mean? I'll tell you what it means. He was a country boy from the hills and hollows from West Virginia. He was trying to get elected," former President Bill Clinton said of Sen. Robert Byrd.

"And maybe he did something he shouldn't have done come and he spent the rest of his life making it up. And that's what a good person does. There are no perfect people. There are certainly no perfect politicians," he added.

LOL Billuah is go all emo for Bobby.

#6  Remember that Bill Clinton's mentor was the infamous Governor Orville Faubus, who called out the Arkansas National Guard to prevent school integration; only to be soundly whupped by president Eisenhower and the 101st Airborne Division.
