Dubai admits nuke, other smuggling through its ports
Shipments of illegal nuclear and weapons-building material have been intercepted in Dubai and other ports in the United Arab Emirates, local authorities have admitted.

Officials have accepted for the first time that the country is being used as a transit point for smuggling both money and illegal goods.
No, they've finally admitted what they accepted some time ago, because they are finally ready to act on the knowledge.
The admission comes as part of a drive to crack down on underground trade ties with Iran.

In the last week, the authorities have staged raids on dozens of firms regarded as fronts for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Dubai, and frozen 41 Iran-linked bank accounts.

And at a meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism in Abu Dhabi, a senior figure revealed the extent of the trade in weapons and "dual-use" goods.

Hamad al-Kaabi, ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, said new laws relating to the trade in nuclear and dual-use goods had "led to the shutting down of dozens of international and local companies involved in money laundering and proliferation of dual use and dangerous materials".

The goods included some whose trade was banned by United Nations regulations aimed at nuclear non-proliferation.

"Security forces have interdicted scores of ships suspected of carrying illicit cargo and seized numerous sensitive shipments that could be used for the manufacture of weapons systems, including specialised aluminium sheets, titanium, high-speed computers and sophisticated machine tools."

Titanium is a key component in long-range missiles.
And toothpaste, when added in small amounts as the inert powder titanium dioxide. But I'm being silly.
Export to Iran of both titanium and specialised aluminium is banned under United Nations sanctions.

Mr Kaabi refused to confirm that Iran was the target of the recent interceptions. But he told The Daily Telegraph: "The UAE has implemented many notable United Nations security council resolutions. A lot of these have banned certain goods going to certain countries."

Three weeks ago, the security council approved a new round of sanctions against Iran, targeting conventional weapons and missile systems, and companies affiliated to the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).

Dubai, which was founded largely on trade with Iran, has long been thought to have the closest ties of all the Emirates with the country. The Dubai-based Gulf News, quoting federal UAE government sources and documents, last week alleged that there were "several companies operating in the UAE which are directly or indirectly linked to the IRGC".

Chihuahua: Prison Director, Staff Resigns
Google Translate. At the moment only the Mexican Daily la Polaka has this story...
The director of a Chihuahua state prison facility near Juarez has resigned along with a large number of key staff, it was learned informally, according the Mexican news daily La Polaka.

The Centro de Readaptación Social (CERESO) facility in Juarez has been the focus of a number of security incidents in the past 30 days, the most recent of which was the discovery of weapons and other contraband last Wednesday, as well as a murdered prisoner found yesterday.

Ramón Quintana Villasana resigned Thursday along with a number of other department heads after receiving death threats.

The prison currently has only a single inexperienced replacement for prison director and it is widely thought the facility is on the verge of another riot as a result.

#2  If Turkey is moving into the Iran/Syria/Hamas orbit, then it may make sense for Russia to stop viewing the US and Europe as adversaries and start cooperating with us on their southern flank. US-Russian cooperation would bring a host of benefits to both nations:

1) containing a nuclear Iran: joint Russian-US operation of a new missile defense facility on Iran's doorstep, in Azerbaijan

2) taking the war to the islamists who threaten both nations, via US access to FABs in the 'stans and other forms of cooperation in NW or Central Asia

3) containing China: US-Russian cooperation would signal to China that its slow invasion-by-osmosis in Russia's Far East will not be without serious consequences

4) a new source of oil and natural gas for the US

US officials link Shukrijumah to New York plot
Current and former counter-terrorism officials of the United States have linked Adnan Shukrijumah, one of the most wanted persons, to thwarted plot to bomb the subway system in New York City last year, authorities said.

The officials said Shukrijumah, top al Qaeda operative, met with one of the would-be suicide bombers in a plot that Attorney General Eric Holder called one of the most dangerous since the 9/11 attacks. In Brooklyn, federal prosecutors have named Shukrijumah in a draft terrorism indictment but the Justice Department was still discussing whether to cite his role.

Some officials feared that the extra attention might hinder efforts to capture him. The involvement of Shukrijumah shows how important the (subway bombing) plot was to al Qaeda's senior leadership. Intelligence officials believe Shukrijumah is one of the top candidates to become al Qaeda's next head of external operations, the man in charge of planning attacks worldwide.

The counter-terrorism officials discussed the case on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak about it. Shukrijumah, 34, has eluded the FBI for years. The Saudi-born operative studied at a community college in Florida, but when the FBI showed up to arrest him as a witness to a terrorism case in 2003, he already had left the country. The US is offering $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

Intelligence officials started unraveling the subway plot last year, when US intelligence intercepted an electronic mail from an account that al Qaeda had used in a recent terrorist plot, officials said. The mail discussed bomb-making techniques and was sent to an address in Denver, setting off alarms within the CIA and the FBI from Islamabad to the US.

Najibullah Zazi and two friends were arrested in September 2009 before, prosecutors said, they could carry out a trio of suicide bombings in Manhattan. Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay have pleaded guilty and admitted planning to detonate homemade bombs on the subway during rush hour. A third man, Adis Medunjanin, awaits trial. A fourth suspect, known as Ahmed, traded the emails with Zazi, who was frantically trying to perfect his bomb-making recipe, the officials said.

The US wants to bring the Pakistani man to the US for trial on charges that are not yet public. The CIA learned valuable information about al Qaeda and its operations from Ahmed. The officials in Pakistan have also arrested a fifth person, known as Afridi, who worked with Ahmed, the officials said. The FBI and the US attorney's office in Brooklyn had no comment.

The US officials told The Associated Press about how the men hooked up with al Qaeda. The new account provides a rare glimpse into the recruiting process. The trio's lengthy odyssey took them from their homes in Queens to the mountainous tribal areas in northwest Pakistan. The prosecutors said the men, motivated by their anger at the war in Afghanistan, travelled to Peshawar in the summer of 2008 to fight against the US forces.

Before splitting up, the men stayed at the house of Zazi's uncle. Zazi remained in Peshawar while Ahmedzay and Medunjanin headed into Afghanistan where they hoped to join the fight against the Americans, they said. But Ahmedzay and Medunjanin never made it. They were stopped at a roadblock and briefly detained by the police who were suspicious of their Western looks and their US passports.

The two men talked their way out of the bind, however, and the police never contacted the US about it, the officials said. Undeterred, the men regrouped in Peshawar and were recruited to meet an al Qaeda facilitator at local mosque in Peshawar. While al Qaeda was eager to recruit Americans, the group was also deeply suspicious of the trio and wanted to make sure they were not US spies.

Once they passed that initial test, Ahmed drove them to North Waziristan and delivered them to a rudimentary terrorist camp. The three received weapons training, but al Qaeda had bigger plans for the men than the Afghanistan front line. Salah al-Somali, then the head of external operations, and Rashid Rauf, a British national linked to a 2006 jetliner bomb plot, explained to the three men that they were more useful as bombers in the US.

It was at that camp that the US officials believe Ahmedzay, and perhaps the other two men, met Shukrijumah. In 2004, then attorney general John Ashcroft called Shukrijumah a clear and present danger to the US. Abu Zubaydah told US authorities that Shukrijumah was among the most likely candidates to attack the US or Europe. The trio completed about two weeks of training and left the camp with the promise of returning. But only Zazi made the trip back to Waziristan to take a course on explosives.

In early 2009, Zazi flew to New York and moved to Denver, armed with bomb-making notes. Unlike the Sept 11, 2001, attacks they chose the target, not Osama bin Laden. The emails that tipped off US intelligence triggered "Operation High Rise," an FBI investigation that had to come together within days. Agents scrambled as Zazi sped toward New York on September 9, armed with about two pounds of the powerful explosive.

He was stopped on the George Washington Bridge, but authorities failed to find the explosive material (TATP) stashed in a bag in the trunk. Spooked after the traffic stop, Zazi gave the TATP to Ahmedzay, who flushed it down the toilet. That week, the FBI raided the homes of all three friends, bringing a swift end to the plot.

Obama allies demand end to Afghan war
A group of US lawmakers allied with the White House called on Thursday for an end to the Afghan war, labelling it an un-winnable drain on US "blood and treasure" and comparing it to Vietnam. "Every dollar spent and every life wasted in Vietnam was just that, a waste," said Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler. "Afghanistan is the same. Every dollar we spend, every life we waste, is a waste." Some 21 lawmakers have joined the "Out of Afghanistan Caucus" opposing continued combat operations there, according to Representative John Conyers.

South Waziristan free of terrorists: Army
The South Waziristan Agency has been cleared of the Taliban and there are no more insurgent hideouts in the tribal region, a private television channel quoted Pakistan Army's operations commander in South Waziristan, Major-General Nawaz Khan, as saying on Thursday.
Nothing left but farmers. Simple farmers. Simple, heavily-armed farmers ...
Briefing the media at the Rata Kulachi Stadium in Dera Ismail Khan, the operations commander said that foreign forces were responsible for the situation that had developed in the region, adding that the Pakistan Army had also arrested foreigners and seized foreign-made arms and ammunition from their possession. After the successful completion of operation Rah-e-Nijat, the political administration of the region was responsibly fulfilling its duties, he said, according to the channel.

The operations commander also surveyed the ongoing activities at a registration camp for the internally displaced persons (IDPs), and said that the process of the IDPs repatriation was progressing along the right track. He said that the repatriated IDPs would be provided with all necessary facilities. The operations commander said that development and rebuilding of infrastructure was underway in South Waziristan, adding that the schools and roads were also being rebuilt in the region, the channel reported.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Secret Israel-Turkey talks backfire on Netanyahu
US attempts to broker a détente between Israel and Turkey misfired after secret talks between the two states yielded little but a new domestic crisis for Benjamin Netanyahu.

Far from the diplomatic triumph he had hoped for, the Israeli prime minister found himself the target of a withering tirade from Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister and coalition partner, who had been excluded from the negotiations.

Lieberman was told during an interview on Israel Radio that he was the only senior cabinet minister not to know of the talks
Striking a blow at the fragile unity of Mr Netanyahu's unwieldy government, Mr Lieberman refused to answer repeated telephone calls from the prime minister yesterday and instead took to the airwaves to vent his fury.

At the heart of the row was a well meaning but arguably injudicious effort, initiated by President Barack Obama, to end Israel's estrangement from its erstwhile Turkish ally caused by the naval raid a month ago on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, resulting in the deaths of nine activists, eight of them Turkish.

At Mr Obama's behest, secret talks took place in Brussels on Wednesday.

While the Turks sent their foreign minister, Israel decided to pass over the hawkish Mr Lieberman in favour of Benjamin Ben Eliezer, the left-wing trade minister who has long advocated closer ties with Turkey.

But Mr Lieberman was incensed when he learned of the meeting from the television news and he released a statement saying that his exclusion has caused "serious harm" to his relationship with the prime minister.

Making matters worse, Mr Lieberman was then told during an interview on Israel Radio that he was the only senior cabinet minister not to know of the talks, prompting more indignation.

Mr Netanyahu's office said the foreign minister had not been informed of the talks due to a "technical" oversight.
Netanyahu is descending into Obama territory, credibility-wise.
And from the Jerusalem Post:

Netanyahus spokesman Nir Hefetz told Lieberman in a previously scheduled meeting on Thursday that leaving him out of the loop had been a simple mistake and not a deliberate attempt to keep him in the dark.

But Lieberman did not accept the explanation, and sources close to him vowed revenge.

"Relations between Netanyahu and Lieberman have been harmed irrevocably," a source close to Lieberman said. "The scope of Liebermans humiliation will be commensurate with the size of his revenge, even if it is not immediate, obvious or direct. Lieberman does not easily forgive, and his revenge will be cold and calculated, not impulsive."

Sources close to Lieberman said he had realized that whoever pressured Netanyahu hardest and last tended to convince him, and that from now on, he intended to be the one applying that final, persuasive pressure.

Israel Beiteinu will remain in the coalition, but Liebermans associates said it would no longer serve Netanyahu blindly.

"There are no thoughts about resigning, because we dont want to give that joy to anyone," Lieberman told Israel Radio. "It is a matter of what political culture we want to have in Israel, do we have good governance, and whether basic loyalty is respected. We must clarify all of this to the fullest, because it cannot go on this way."

Israel ready to free 1000 Palestinians for Shalit
[Al Arabiya Latest] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is prepared to release 1000 Palestinian security prisoners to free Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held captive in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip for over four years.

"The state of Israel is willing to pay a heavy price for the release of Gilad Shalit but we are not able to say it will be any price," he said.

Netanyhau said he was willing "to release a thousand prisoners" to secure the soldier's release as part of a prisoner swap deal with Hamas, the Islamist rulers of Gaza.

That is the price that I am willing to pay for the release of Gilad Shalit," he said in a televised address some four years after the soldier was snatched in a cross-border raid.

In a live address to the country, Netanyahu said all Israelis wanted Shalit back safely but the nation could not "pay any price" because past experience showed that many Palestinians released had returned to carry out attacks on Israelis.

In a campaign to pile pressure on the government to negotiate their son's release, the Shalit family on Sunday began a march on Jerusalem with their supporters and said they would camp outside the prime minister's office until Shalit came home.

Hamas wants Israel to release hundreds of prisoners, including several top militants responsible for killing scores of Israelis, but Israel has balked at some of the more notorious names on the list.

Anorher woman in Iran to executed by stoning
Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani, a mother of two, is waiting to die in Iran by a method of execution described by her lawyer as "barbaric" -- stoning. She will be buried up to her chest, deeper than a man would be, and the stones that will be hurled at her will be large enough to cause pain but not so large as to kill her immediately, according to an Amnesty International report that cited the Iranian penal code.

The 42-year-old woman from the northern city of Tabriz was convicted of adultery in 2006, and her execution is imminent, said prominent human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei.

Ashtiani was forced to confess after being subjected to 99 lashes, Mostafaei said Thursday in a telephone interview from Tehran.

She later retracted that confession and has denied wrongdoing. Her conviction was based not on evidence but on the determination of three out of five judges, Mostafaei said. She has asked forgiveness from the court but the judges refused to grant clemency.

Iran's supreme court upheld the conviction in 2007.

Mostafaei believes a language barrier prevented his client from fully comprehending court proceedings. Ashtiani is of Azerbaijani descent and speaks Turkish, not Farsi.

#4  I do believe there are rational muslims. But I think they are a minority, and they exist mainly in the West. These people are criminally insane, and we are responsible because of GW and BO. Neither had/have what it takes to drag the Cretins into the 18th century.

#5  Neither had/have what it takes to drag the Cretins into the 18th century. I don't think anyone has that ability. You can lead a horse to water, etc. A strategy of containment would have been the best the rest of the world could have hoped for, except for the unfortunate dependence of much of the world on cheap oil from Muslim countries.

#6  Besides oil, the other factor I should have mentioned is transnational progressivism, which may be the death of us yet.

Iran to design long-range air defense missiles
After Russia's controversial decision to freeze the delivery of S-300 defense systems, Iran unveils efforts aimed at self-sufficiency in passive air defense.

"At present, Iran is on the path to designing long-range missiles used in passive air defense," Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told Mehr News Agency on Thursday.

In wake of fresh UN Security Council sanctions imposed against Iran in June over its nuclear program, Russia U-turned on an earlier assurance that the new resolution would not affect the deal. The decision, as well as the Kremlin's "Yes" vote to the US-drafted sanctions resolution, drew sharp criticism from Iranian officials.

Tehran has warned Moscow -- a longtime trade and energy partner that helped build its southern Bushehr nuclear reactor -- that the sanctions are no excuse for reneging on the deal.

Earlier on Thursday, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani stressed that the new UNSC measure would have no bearing on the delivery, as the contract had been penned well before the sanctions.

Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily on Wednesday estimated Moscow's losses in breaching the contract to be over $1 billion, including a $400-million penalty likely imposed by Tehran.

The US and its European allies have embraced the "costly" Russian move, after convincing the veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council to join Washington's sanctions campaign.

Ahmadinejad to visit Nigeria, Mali
[Iran Press TV Latest] Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to travel Africa for a two-nation tour as part of his plans to attend a D8 meeting, reports say.

The president plans to visit the Nigerian capital, Abuja, to take part in a conference for a group of eight developing countries known as the D8, Mehr news agency reported on Thursday.

He also will pay a one-day visit to Bamako to discuss mutual ties with Malian top-ranking officials.

Iran's ambassador to Nigeria, Khosro Rezazadeh, confirmed Ahmadinejad's planned visit, but declined to offer further details, the Associated Press reported.

The Iranian president made similar visits to Uganda and Zimbabwe in April.
