Jury selection starts in microwave death
(UPI) -- Jury selection began Monday in the Ohio case of a baby who died after being placed in a microwave oven. The selection process, which is expected to take a couple of days, included questions put to the prospective jurors about their feelings on the death penalty. China Arnold, 27, is on trial in Dayton for allegedly murdering her 3-week-old daughter, Paris Talley, by microwaving her in 2005. The Dayton Daily News said the judge in the case expects the trial to last about three weeks once the jury is seated.

The truth about the IRA's Shergar kidnapping
A reminder that the Islamists aren't the only bastard terrorists to kill innocents of late. In this case the victim was arguably one of the best racehorses of the century, kidnapped and slaughtered in a bungled operation before he had a chance to be put out at stud. The whole damned bloodline screwed up and a magnificent animal tortured by these murderous idiots, led by the SOB on the left.

Excerpt:
The source said that the two handlers, one clutching a machine gun, went into the remote stable where the horse was being held and opened fire. "Shergar was machine gunned to death. There was blood everywhere and the horse even slipped on his own blood. There was lots of cussin' and swearin' because the horse wouldn't die. It was a very bloody death." It was several minutes before the horse, which was in agony, slowly bled to death.

And so, the greatest racehorse of the century was butchered in the same way that the IRA killed many of its human enemies.

Governor's son selling "Don't Drop the Soap" prison boardgame
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The son of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is peddling a board game titled “Don’t Drop the Soap,” a prison-themed game he created as part of a class project at the Rhode Island School of Design. John Sebelius, 23, has the backing of his mother and father, U.S. Magistrate Judge Gary Sebelius. The governor’s spokeswoman, Nicole Corcoran, said both parents “are very proud of their son John’s creativity and talent.” . . .
I just love his Karelia Suite.
“Fight your way through 6 different exciting locations in hopes of being granted parole,” the site says. “Escape prison riots in The Yard, slip glass into a mob boss’ lasagna in the Cafeteria, steal painkillers from the nurse’s desk in the Infirmary.”

The game includes five tokens representing a bag of cocaine, a handgun and three characters: wheelchair-using ‘Wheelz,” muscle-flexing “Anferny” and business suit-clad “Sal ‘the Butcher.’” . . .

h/t Jules Crittenden, who notes that an earlier version of the AP story contained a few more salacious details about the game:

An earlier version that moved on the wires had a quote about “No one enters through the front door,” something like that, not sure what that’s supposed to mean, and mentioned something about getting cornered by the Aryan Nations in the showers, but a subsequent version moved minus that, with the unusual notation that it had been edited for length. That was odd. Never seen that before. Wish they’d do a little more of that, as wire scribblers write like there’s no line count sometimes, and cutting for space can be a damned nuisance.

Doesn’t exactly sound like a game designed with unity, hope or change in mind, though.

An eye-opening webiste, independently of its leaning, if only because, beyond the jokes, the reality is that prison rape is perpetred on the weaker and less dangerous inmantes by the actual criminals, and that is has a definite racial/racist element (with the young white man from non violent criminal background as the very, very bottom of the food chain).

#6  From Hutchinson News January 24, 2008
cost for article, summarized:
Congressman Jery Moran (R-KS) arrived for this 24th visit to Kiowa County since the May 4 tornado. he was in great form and the consensus at my table was that Jerry delivered, pherhaps, the best speech of his congressional career.

Seated at the next table were Dennis and Jean McKinney, two special people, who like so many others, lost their home and earthly possessions in their residence located a short distan ce to the south of the Greensburg city limits.

Dennis, the minority leader of the Kansas House of Representatives (D-116th), has been the point man to state and federal agencies and, as always, has done a superb job.

These are the 2 people who, despite the efforts of the state and federal agencies, have been getting things done. Only brought up because of sebelius 'I have a green' speech later tonight - look for the lack of support b/c NG troops are gone inline, whose absence went unnoticed by the governor during the ice storms which affected 10s of thousands rather than just under a thousand people with the 'Going Greensburg' face put on the story.

That, and maybe junior is trying to build interest/inventory for the museum prison.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
NHS To Give Up On That Whole 'Treating The Sick' Thing
Doctors are calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or who lead unhealthy lives.

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone.

Fertility treatment and "social" abortions are also on the list of procedures that many doctors say should not be funded by the state.

The findings of a survey conducted by Doctor magazine sparked a fierce row last night, with the British Medical Association and campaign groups describing the recommendations from family and hospital doctors as "outrageous" and "disgraceful".

About one in 10 hospitals already deny some surgery to obese patients and smokers, with restrictions most common in hospitals battling debt.

Managers defend the policies because of the higher risk of complications on the operating table for unfit patients. But critics believe that patients are being denied care simply to save money.

One in three said that elderly patients should not be given free treatment if it were unlikely to do them good for long.

#3  Few realize that this common sense approach is already done to keep hospitals profitable. Many doctors will not do surgery on slow-to-heal-smokers, especially by-passes, the obese, or even the elderly as they often cannot survive the risks of anesthesia. "No Extreme Measures" are the norm in nursing homes as merely prolonging life regardless of quality is senseless. Fertility treatments at state expense is ridiculous; if you can't afford it you have no business having children you can't afford, especially when the risk of multiple births is so high! State-paid abortions, contraceptives, and vasectomies should be mandatory for those single parents on the dole after having 2 kids you can't support! The cost of medical care in Britain would go down considerably if they didn't give all immigrants generous benefits in the name of "human rights". Health care for citizens only, with digital oversight to eliminate fraud and abuse, is actually do-able, however.

Africa Subsaharan
Gold mines shut as South Africa forced to ration power supply
The South African government is to introduce electricity rationing, as the country's deepening power crisis forced the world's largest gold and platinum mining companies to shut down operations yesterday.

The move to drastically cut power consumption came as the cabinet described a fortnight of rolling blackouts to millions of homes and businesses as a "national emergency" amid warnings that the electricity shortage will go on for years.

In an unprecedented move, the state power utility, Eskom, told the mines to evacuate all underground staff and cease mining to cut electricity consumption to "minimal levels".

The world's largest gold mine, Driefontein, near Carletonville, with 16,000 workers, was among those closed along with others owned by the world's three largest gold mining houses, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields and Harmony. The two biggest platinum mining companies, which account for more than half the global supply, were also forced to cease production, driving precious metal prices to new highs with platinum rising nearly 5%.

Eskom has warned the mine closures could last for up to six weeks as it will only supply power at "survival level". It predicts that regular blackouts will continue for five years or more until new power stations are built.

Gold mining is a mainstay of the South African economy, contributing about 18% of GDP and employing hundreds of thousands of people. The opposition Democratic Alliance warned the crisis could have a "catastrophic" impact on the economy not only through mine closures but by hitting manufacturing and tourism.

Buyelwa Sonjica, the mines and energy minister, yesterday said the government would pass legislation introducing electricity rationing as a "quick hit" solution to cut power consumption. "We have discussed how quotas will be allocated, who will be exempt from the programme, what incentives and penalties will be in place, when it will start and what legislative enablers we need to have in place," he said.

Eskom is seeking to cut consumption by 20% and has proposed that rationing be enforced by fines and disconnection.

Alec Erwin, the public enterprises minister, described the situation as grave.

"The unprecedented unplanned power outages must now be treated as a national electricity emergency situation that has to be addressed with urgent, vigorous and coordinated actions," Erwin said. But he denied that the crisis could hit the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The government has blamed the power shortages on increased demand caused by years of economic growth and the provision of electricity to black townships that were not connected in the apartheid era. But it has also admitted it failed to heed a warning from Eskom 10 years ago that without new power stations it might not be able to meet demand by 2007.
Price of gold through the roof.

#6  This is the poisoned fruit of past ANC decisions on economic and social engineering : lots of investors who would have been interested in building power plants were frightened off by the ANC's slow slide towards Zimbabwean "redistribution", and have refused to build ANYTHING that could be stolen by the ANC in future years.
Also, addressing the "Africa for Africans" mentality, just look at Uganda under Idi Amin to see how well that works out - Uganda at the time of independence was South Africa's economic rival on the continent. A few years under Africanization with all whites, Orientals, and Indians driven from the country turned Uganda into a typical third world hellhole.

China-Japan-Koreas
Nork Reservist Goes Postal With AA Gun
(via Freep, translated from Korean)

People, who heard the story, are snickering at the dead officials who took bribes, saying, "They were killed while gorging on bribe. Must have no regrets."

A firearm accident broke out at the firing range for reserve units near Yonpo-ri, Hamju County, S. Hwang-hae Province, N. Korea, putting its military on alert. According to internal sources from N. Korea, on Jan. 18, at the peak of N. Korea's winter training, at a firing range of 7th Corps, a reservist in training for firing an four-barreled 14.5mm anti-aircraft gun got angry at the result of his performance evaluation, and mowed down (evaluators,) resulting in about a dozen casualties.

According to the sources, many evaluators including active duty officers of 7th Corps and the head of Hamju Civil Defense Unit were either injured or killed. The reservist in question was a member of a collective farm reserve unit.

It happened because some evaluators took bribes and made unfair evaluation during live fire exercise using anti-aircraft guns, the sources said. In a live fire test, competing reserve units from factories and collective farms fire at a flying mockup drone using three or four anti-aircraft guns. They are graded according to which part of the drone they hit. The reserve unit where the man in question belonged hit the tail of the drone first, shooting it down, but the evaluators gave high grade to the reserve unit of another farm (In N. Korea, those who hit the tail of a drone get the highest grade during live fire exercise of anti-aircraft guns.) The unit which got the high grade was from a well-off collective farm. They gave hefty bribe (to evaluators,) walking away with a good grade. However, the reservist in question was from a struggling farm, which cannot afford bribes and his unit had been treated to instances of poor evaluation before.

The reservist , a veteran, was the No. 1 member of AA team( the one who pulls the trigger.) When his team got poor grade again, he blew the top, turned his gun around, and mowed down his evaluators.

The reservist training had all stopped due to the accident. Defense Ministry sent a team to investigate it. The reservist in question attempted to take his own life, but he was detained and sent to a security agency. According to the sources, it is possible to completely cover up an incident if it happened inside the military, but this one involved many civilians. Words got out despite efforts by the authorities. People around the neighborhood already know all about this. They all snickered, saying, "There is a saying that those who got killed while gorging on food have no regrets. The dead officials gorged on lots of bribes. They should have no regrets as well."

Each factory or collective farm has its own reserve units, and colleges have their own reserve units in N. Korea. They all perform air defense duty. Munition factories have their own anti-aircraft unit to defend their facilities . Reserve units from other kind of factories and collective farms are tasked to defend their workplace as well as their surrounding neighborhood. College reserve units are incorporated into active duty service for six months and perform air defense duty.

I blame Sly Stallone, in the "Rambo" trailer there's a scene where the hero messily blasts a truck driver at point blank range with an heavy (14,5mm?) MG - obviously, this poor man has been watching Evil Youtube, and his mind was poisoned by western entertainment. In fact, I blame bush, rather.

Cows Fall Sick And Die In 12 Hours In West Bengal
(via Pandemic Flu Information Forum)

The death of 17 cows since Saturday night triggered panic at some West Midnapore villages.

With some backyard poultries falling prey to deadly H5N1 virus at a village in Debra block of the district, the villagers of Rajarbagan, Bisripat, Pathra, Hatihalka and Gobindopur are scared that now the avian influenza have affected their cattle. The samples have been sent for tests to a Kolkata laboratory. The district officials, however, feel that the cattle could have been affected by anthrax. The villagers got worried as several goats and hens were also found dead at the same time.

"The cows fell sick and died within 12 hours. We could not even take them to the animal husbandry office for a check up. With the bird flu having spread to these parts, we are worried that the cattles could also get affected," said Umed Mallick, a resident of Hatihalka village.

Himanshu Pradhan, the local livestock development officer said that the possibility of anthrax could not be ruled out.

"The primary symptoms resemble that of anthrax. The serum and blood samples have been sent for tests," Pradhan said. Though the avian influenza strain is known to affect animals like pigs, there are so far no indications of the virus having affected any other animal.

"Whenever we received information about any animals like goats having died in recent times, samples have been sent for tests. So far there is no indication to confirm that the avian influenza has been transmitted to any other animal," said Anisur Rahman, state animal resources development minister.

Be it anthrax or bird flu, the villagers are a worried lot. "The government should do something for us," said Moinuddin Khan, a villager.
Chicken and wild birds, then goats, then fish, and now cows.

#2  Veterinary staff in West Bengal are capturing chickens in night-time raids on the backyards of homes to surprise villagers unwilling to part with their poultry as an outbreak of bird flu spread.

Meanwhile, the United Sates has told the Indian authorities that they are ready to help them with all kind of assistance to tackle the bird flu menace.

Bird flu has spread to 13 of West Bengal's 19 districts, with samples of dead chickens testing positive in two new districts, officials said on Monday.

Experts fear the H5N1 strain could mutate into a form easily transmitted from person to person, leading to a pandemic, but there have been no reported human infections in India yet.

"It is very difficult to contain the virus among backyard poultry as villagers hide their chickens and even smuggle it to homes of distant relatives," said Anisur Rahaman, WB’s Animal Resources Minister.

Officials said they were worried about the disease spreading to the crowded state capital, Kolkata, after bird flu hit the South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, only 20 km away from the city.

Surveillance was in place to stop infected poultry from being smuggled into one of India's biggest cities, they said.

Authorities also used loudspeakers and distributed leaflets in villages, urging people to hand over poultry to culling teams.

Villagers say government compensation of a dollar a bird was not enough.

"It's not just money, it is such a sentimental issue as villagers keep ducks and chickens as pets and also have different names to call them," Nazrul Islam of the West Bengal Poultry Association said.

West Bengal has promised to pay more money to villagers, admitting the virus could spread further if birds were not culled quickly.

The World Health Organisation has said it is India's most serious outbreak of bird flu.

Over 1.5 million birds have already been culled since the deadly H5N1 virus hit the state earlier this month.

Another half a million chickens and ducks will be slaughtered in the next few days, officials said.

The government says laboratory tests have confirmed the H5N1 strain in at least two of West Bengal's 19 districts, but said reports from 11 other districts were likely to be the same.

Authorities said the virus could have come from neighbouring Bangladesh, also struggling to contain an outbreak of bird flu.

Most countries and all Indian states have banned poultry products from West Bengal.

#3  Pets are very problematic. The disease is known to attack both dogs and cats, which threaten to become a major vector in the west, by people who cannot abide to part with their beloved animals.

#4  Bengali's are some of the most brainless of the primitive tribal/village folks in India. Everyone of them I have encountered or interacted with could not have an IQ higher than 55 or 60.

They're fiercely protective of their own belongings, but will steal you blind, believing that if they can steal it, they deserve it.

Scum...every last one of them. Other Indian ethnic groups call them bongs. Never could get a good answer as to why.

#5  Sounds like Anthrax, which is not as rare as you might think:
"As of August 10, 2006, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reported 644 dead animals on 136 farms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, most of these cattle."
