A city man is charged with violating state wiretap laws by recording a detective on his home security camera, while the detective was investigating the mans sons.
Michael Gannon, 49, of 26 Morgan St., was arrested Tuesday night, after he brought a video to the police station to try to file a complaint against Detective Andrew Karlis, according to Gannons wife, Janet Gannon, and police reports filed in Nashua District Court.
Police instead arrested Gannon, charging him with two felony counts of violating state eavesdropping and wiretap law by using an electronic device to record Karlis without the detectives consent.

1) When in the presence of a policeman or his gear or property, in any police facility or vehicle, always assume you are being recorded. There are distinct public and private areas everywhere, and you have little right to privacy in a public or police area.
2) Many police are very paranoid about being recorded themselves, which can make them behave in an unpredictable manner. So if you record a policeman, tell no one, and give the recordings to your attorney. Never assume a policeman has done things by the book, your attorney might spot a critical error that could save you much grief.
3) Under no circumstances tamper with or make notice of any police wiretapping, recording or surveillance. It is an easy obstruction of justice conviction.
4) If a policeman ever assumes physical control over your person, go into "puppet mode", in which you do *nothing* without being ordered to. A common trick is to order you to put your hands on the wall or a car, then move behind you and ask you a question. If you remove one hand, to half turn and respond, it is resisting arrest.
It is also good to respond to orders in a military manner, that is, repeat back the order to the officer before executing it. "I am reaching into my glove compartment." This is very reassuring to the officer.
5) If you are concerned about the behavior of a police officer in your presence, first make sure that there are witnesses around, then request a police supervisor. If the officer says "no", then you do have a problem, and act very cautiously.
6) Police departments receive the most astounding and improbable gossip and rumor around, and while most of it is outrageous nonsense that they would never act upon, they might still suspect you of it enough to ask some leading questions and see if you bite. Some policemen will also spread gossip to see what happens.
Uninvited guests, including fruit flies and mice, have forced the closing of the M&M Mars candy factory on Chicago's Northwest Side. Health department officials said the company was warned earlier this month following an inspection that showed an "infestation" of fruit flies in the food production area as well as gaps in doors that might allow rodents access to the facility, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.
The department inspected the plant on June 21 after receiving a call on its non-emergency line saying there were roaches at the facility that produces M & Ms as well as Snickers bars and other candy. A follow-up inspection Thursday showed no action had been taken to fix any of the problems cited in an earlier visit.
In addition, inspectors found mouse feces in the food processing area and noticed several food items were being kept on the floor instead of shelves, the newspaper said.

In my yoof I was a gnarly vet of the Publix Rat Patrol, stalking Norways and your local vermin thru the loading dock at 2 a.m. I've never had a better job. Pellet rifles and flashlights, I weeps for my lost yoof.

I live very close to this factory. From the outside (and I've never been inside) it's a very clean, spiffy facility with lots of gardens and flowers.
If I were an NYT reporter, of course, I'd tell you exactly how to infiltrate the plant and the exact addresses and hours for their executives.

We regret to inform you that publisher Jim Baen passed away on June 28th. He suffered a massive stroke on June 12, 2006 and never woke from it. Jim Baen was a founding partner of Baen Books, one of the largest independent publishers of popular fiction. Since its inception in 1984, Baen evolved to be one of the leading publishers of science fiction and fantasy, and in recent years a leader in electronic publishing and the fight against encrypted books.
Jim Baen started his career in publishing in the complaints department of Ace Books. He moved on to Galaxy magazine in 1973, where his editorial acumen turned the magazine into one of the leading short story venues of the day. He returned to Ace under publisher Tom Doherty to run the science fiction line. When Doherty left to found Tor Books, Jim went with him and established its science fiction line, purchasing its first 170 titles. In 1984 a deal with Simon and Schuster/Pocket Books gave Jim a chance to found his own independent company. S&S has distributed Baen Books ever since. Recently, Baen Books has enjoyed a string of New York Times bestsellers by such authors as David Weber, John Ringo and Eric Flint. Jim also personally worked with Jerry Pournelle, David Drake, Larry Niven, Charles Sheffield, Lois McMaster Bujold and many other authors who shaped the field of modern science fiction. In recent years Jim continued to develop a whole new generation of science fiction writers.
Jim Baen was a personal and vocal champion of unencrypted ebooks. The Baen Books Webscriptions program is a model in the field, and the discussion board at http://bar.baen.com, Baens Bar, is an active forum and thriving online community. Jims piquant wit and incisive commentary will be sorely missed.
Jim is survived by two daughters, Jessica Baen, 29, and Katherine Baen, 14.
The surviving partners of Baen and his heirs intend to continue Jims legacy of innovative, independent publishing. Longtime Baen Books executive editor Toni Weisskopf will be acting publisher and direct day-to-day operation of the company. Remembrances of Jims life will be held at Tri-noc-Con in Raleigh, NC Saturday, July 22 and Lacon IV, the Worldcon, in Los Angeles, CA in August.

I for one am sad to see him go, as Baen has been one of my favorite publishers due to their free library and the entertaining Non-PC books they published. A true loss to scifi publishing and to scifi fans and uthors everywhere. Jim Baen meant a lot of things to a lot of people. To me, personally, Jim Baen meant the chance for a nobody/no name author to hopefully get some of his work finally published (I missed that deadline though).

His talent overshadowed everyone else in the SF publishing world. It will be a tall order for anyone to fill his shoes. My condolences and sympathy for his family and his many friends.

I love Jim Baen and his company. They are the only reliable source of military scifi/fantasy in the publishing world. He will be sorely missed.

I've been reading Jim's authors ever since he edited Galaxy magazine - and his imprimature on any book/author was ALWAYS a consideration before I would part with my money.
He will be sorely missed, and I don't know of anyone who will be able to step into his shoes.

My favorite SF writer is James H. Schmitz. In the past few years, Baen has published most (all?) of Schmitz's work, which was long out of print. We need more Schmitziness in SF, and I was hoping Baen would give it to us. Hopefully his heirs will carry on the tradition.

When I went to the grocery store earlier, I picked up a Baen book in his memory: Bolo! by David Weber, continuing Laumer's series. I've enjoyed many other of Baen's authors, not to mention the free library

A Chinese entrepreneur who once tried to sell land on the moon is hoping to cash in on China's obsession with the World Cup by offering fans bags of stadium air. Li Jie, who describes himself as chief executive of the Lunar Embassy to China, is selling his "World Cup air" for 50 yuan ($6.25) a bag. "The air was packed at the World Cup venues while the workers were cutting the grass before matches," Li told the Beijing Daily Messenger. "You can still smell the grass." Li suggests football enthusiasts who are not able to make the trip to Germany hang the green plastic bag around their necks and breathe in the air while watching World Cup matches on television. "Whichever stadium you like, I can give you its air," he added. Li's attempt to sell plots of land on the moon for 300 yuan an acre was shut down by officials last year and his new scheme may also fall victim to rules against speculation and profiteering. "My 'World Cup air' is for the soccer fans," a defiant Li told the paper. "It is a kind of sporting product." Local officials said they were investigating the company.

I'll pay big money to learn exactly what the attraction is in soccer. If you see 5 shots on goal in an entire game, you are lucky. And I think the refs deliberately cause "red card" controversies, only to create some excitement, within the bore of mid-field passing, ad nauseum. But those zero-zero games do cure insomnia.
SCHOOLCHILDREN have been laying flowers at the Perth shopping centre where eight-year-old Sofia Rodriguez-Urrutia-Shu was murdered. Sofia's body was found by her 14-year-old brother on Monday, 10 minutes after she went to the toilet at the Livingston Market shopping centre in Canning Vale in Perth's south.
A 21-year-old Canning Vale man has been charged with her murder.
Two busloads of children from the Carey Baptist College, the school Sofia's brother attends have been taken to the main entrance of the shopping centre to lay flowers as a mark of respect. School principal Des Mitchell said it was a way for the children to demonstrate their support for Sofia's family. "We are laying flowers on behalf of all members in our community and on behalf of Australians who want to show some kindness," he said.
The school is taking take busloads of children from grades seven to 12 to the shopping centre throughout the day to lay flowers. Up to 100 members of the community have also turned out to lay floral tributes.
Lionel Jospin, the former French Socialist prime minister, has indicated he could stand in next year's presidential elections in a move observers say is aimed at preventing Ségolène Royal, the favourite, from winning the party nomination. "If it appears that I am the best placed to bring the country together, to assume the responsibilities of the state, to propose directions to the French people, then I would obviously ask myself the question [of whether to stand]," he said.
Mr Jospin's return to the forefront of politics comes after four years in the wilderness following his humiliating defeat to the far right's Jean-Marie Le Pen in the first round of the 2002 presidential election. Speaking on the main French evening news on Wednesday, Mr Jospin played down the rivalry with Ms Royal, whom he is known to dislike, paying tibute to her as one of "the multiple talents" of the Socialist party.
The latest polls shows Ms Royal has a substantial lead over her party rivals, the former prime minister Laurent Fabius, the former finance minister Dominique Strauss Kahn, the former education minister Jack Lang and the Socialist leader François Hollande, who is also Ms Royal's partner and the father of her four children.
The Israel Antiquities Authority will begin removing the Mugrabi ramp in a few days, despite the fear of Muslim riots.
The ramp, which leads from the Western Wall plaza to one of the Temple Mount Gates, is located in one of the most sensitive places in the world, and plans to carry out excavations under it have therefore been held up by the Shin Bet security service and the prime minister's military secretary for the past two years, for fear of Muslim riots.
Archaeologist Meir Ben-Dov warned Thursday that any digging in the area could lead to bloodshed. "Digging in this place goes way beyond the archaeological sphere. This place is far too sensitive and the price would be much too high," he said. However, a reliable source told Haaretz that "now that the Palestinian Authority is paralyzed and incapable of resisting, it's an excellent opportunity to carry out the plan."
The need to remove the ramp arose in February 2004, when one of its supporting walls collapsed into the West Wall plaza. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the city eng ineer said that the ramp was unstable and must be removed soon.
However, the prime minister's military secretary and Shin Bet representatives who attended discussions about the ramp objected to removing it. A source who attended these meetings told Haaretz that the former military secretary, Yoav Galant, wondered why the ramp needed to be removed.
Meanwhile, the cabinet decided in January 2005 to transfer responsibility for the Western Wall area to the Western Wall Heritage Fund, a group close to settlers' organizations that are active in East Jerusalem. The fund initiated a plan to replace the ramp with a bridge, to which the government contributed NIS 5 million. A court in the northwestern Iranian city of Urmia has sentenced a Kurdish woman, Malak Ghorbany, found guilty of committing adultery to death by stoning - a sentence rarely carried out in recent years. The court also sentenced the woman's brother Abu Bakr Ghorbai and husband Mohammad Daneshfar to six years in jail for killing her lover. Stoning death sentences decreased after international pressure on former reformist president Mohammad Khatami contributed to the end of such rulings in the late 1990s. The punishment was however never scrapped from the penal code of the Islamic Republic. The Committee for the defence of human rights of Iranian Kurdistan has issued a statement to save the life of Malak Ghorbani.

Saudis donated more than $600,000 to Habitat for Humanity for 25 homes built on the 11800 block of Greenmesa in northeast Houston. In the home next door to Johnson's, Lynette Mearis and her 15-year-old daughter Raquel surveyed their home as they made plans to move in next week. Mearis said that the charity from Saudi Arabia reminded her of the U.S. efforts during the December 2004 tsunami.
