Forbes: Merkel edges Rice as most powerful woman
*snicker* Um, right.
Angela Merkel, Germany's first woman chancellor, has succeeded U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the Forbes list as the world's most powerful woman.

Merkel, widely respected for her quiet diplomacy and a firm believer in free-market capitalism, won a tight election last year to unseat Gerhard Schroeder in the top German government post.

Forbes magazine, in announcing its choices for the 100 most powerful women, cited a record 30 women are serving in high echelons of government, up from 24 a year ago, including Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the president of Liberia, and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet. Han Myung-sook is South Korea's first female prime minister.

Forbes said 48 women were running big companies as chief executives or chairwomen throughout the world, up from 35 last year, among them Indra Nooyi, Irene Rosenfeld and Patricia Woertz in the top jobs at PepsiCo, Kraft Foods and Archer Daniels Midland.
How sexist.

#2  Sure beats the rest of the media fawning over katie couric.

#3  I was telecommuting one day and by a stroke of Satan luck, was treated to a camera trip through Katie's colon. Various signposts were noted.."brain", "bright ideas", "fake sincerity" "anti-Bush spin", Something tells me it wasn't treated. Her ads talking about telling us what we need to know and how it affects us sound like the same old crap - with even lower ratings after the meme moves on.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli paraglider crash-lands in minefield
AN Israeli man was left severely injured and in the middle of a minefield near the Syrian border today after crashing his paraglider. The unidentified man took off from a peak in the Golan Heights and drifted east towards the Syrian and Jordanian borders before crashing in the minefield, injuring his legs and breaking several bones, rescue services said. "He's in the process of being rescued," an army spokesman said.

Paragliding, in which participants jump off tall peaks or cliffs with a parachute strapped to their back, is a popular sport in the Golan, where there are many steep mountains along Israel's northeastern border.

The man's parachute is believed to have malfunctioned.
