-Lurid Crime Tales-
FdL man says he's a werewolf
Followed by the obligatory...
Former prison inmate faces several charges

A Fond du Lac man who claimed he was a werewolf and spoke what sounded like a medieval language has been charged with criminal trespassing, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.
What's he speaking, Muldoon?
I think it's medieval, Sarge.

A $5,000 cash bail was ordered for Robert Marsh, 39 — who lists his address as the Fond du Lac County Jail — during an appearance Friday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court.
So he should be easy to find...
A woman who lives on West Division Street contacted Fond du Lac police about 3 a.m. March 1 and reported that Marsh broke through the deadbolt on her door and grabbed her arm but was stopped by two men in the apartment, according to a criminal complaint.
Ha! Two guys stopped him? And he calls himself a werewolf...
Marsh was released from prison a few days prior to the incident and the woman had allowed Marsh to stay with her because he was homeless, according to the report.
You're a homeless guy and you need a place to stay? Sure, come right in...
During the time Marsh stayed at the home he had not slept, was drinking and often incoherent. He stated that he was a werewolf, had powers and was involved in a witch religion, the woman told police.
But he was kinda fun, so we let him hang around...
When Marsh was located he had a small amount of marijuana on him and warned authorities that he could change forms, the complaint said.
Oh, shape shifter, eh? Better slap the bracelets on him, Muldoon.
If convicted of all charges the defendant faces a maximum of almost eight years in prison and more than $21,000 in fines. His next court date is 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.
Wonder if his lady friend let him move back in?

#4  Hmmmm ... you know, Fond du Lac isn't very far away from West Bend and Watertown where the infamous Washington County "BearWolf" creature has been seen ...

I wonder if those "cryptid" sightings were just Mr. Marsh being spotted on a bender? ;-)

Today's Idiot
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A television photographer who was fired for urinating in a cemetery while covering the funeral of an Iowa soldier was denied unemployment benefits. Gerry Edwards, of Center Point, was dismissed in December by KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids. In November, Edwards urinated near a monument at a cemetery while he was there covering the funeral procession for 23-year-old Sgt. James Musack, of Riverside, who was killed in Iraq, court records said. Another journalist photographed the incident, and it was e-mailed to Edwards' managers. Records said officials escorted Edwards out of the building within hours and gave him a choice of resigning or being fired.
Good for you, KGAN. Well done.
The administrative law judge who heard Edwards' appeal for unemployment benefits said the act of urinating at the cemetery was disrespectful, unprofessional and offensive.
And good for you, Your Honor.
Edwards testified at a recent hearing that he was unable to leave the cemetery to urinate for fear of missing the funeral procession. "I was leaned on to get that shot," Edwards testified.
Now I s'pose it's all Bush's fault anyway, with yet another brave young reporter speaking Truth to Power, martyred by the rethuglican war machine.

Global Warming: now it hits brothels
Brothel owners in Bulgaria are blaming global warming for staff shortages. They claim their best girls are working in ski resorts because a lack of snow has forced tourists to seek other pleasures. Petra Nestorova, who runs an escort agency in Sofia, said: 'We have hired students, but they are temps and nothing like our elite girls.'

#8  Pimp,

Try using your head instead of your mouth, troll, and maybe you'll learn something.

My credentials? BS in Biology, PhD in Religion, distinguished technical writer with more than 20 years experience in the fire testing and pharmaceutical fields, currently working security at one of the nation's most prestigious national laboratories where I have access to the acknowledged experts in the field (we currently have 2 Nobel prize winners in physics at the lab and I have access to both of them if I want to ask a brief question).

No one in the actual scientific community believes that man-made global warming is proven. Everyone believes that global warming is occurring.

The problem, troll, is that the scientific community that acknowledges that global warming is occurring has been misquoted, mis-labeled, and mis-identified as believeing in Al Gore's putrid spew which is entirely not the case.

It's the sun, stupid.

Science & Technology
Obit: Captain William Robert Anderson, Cmdr USS Nautilus
William Robert Anderson, a former U.S. congressman and captain of the Nautilus on its historic under-the-ice trips to the North Pole, died Feb. 25. He was 85.

Anderson died in Leesburg, Va., following a brief illness, his family said.

Anderson took command of the Navy's Nautilus in 1957, when the submarine cruised to within 180 miles of the North Pole. The next year Anderson and his crew of 115 made the first voyage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean by passing under the ice of the North Pole.

After retiring from the Navy, Anderson served as a consultant to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, helping to create the Peace Corps. In 1964, he was elected to his first of four terms representing the sixth district of Tennessee in Congress.

Anderson also was a businessman. In 1973, he became chairman of the board of directors of Digital Management Corp. He also served as director for Atlantic Union before founding the data management firm Public Management Corp. with his wife.

#3  ..Sadly he went kinda liberal as a politician - but the courage, skill and leadership he displayed aboard Nautilus were in the highest traditions of the Silent Service. Fair seas and following winds, Sir.

#4  ..One other slightly eerie note: Anderson came close to being asked to serve as George McGovern's running mate in 1972, but never got the nod because he was considered too much of a maverick. The guy who got the job - at least the first one - was Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton, who passed away yesterday.

'Atlas Shrugged' – 50 years later
In which the Christian Science Monitor takes a look at Ayn Rand's Objectivist manifesto fifty years after publication. This book helped shape a lot of my views, as I suspect it did for much of the Rantburg readership.

#1  Yep-my favorite all-time novel.

Some will be upset about Rand's view of God and religion. Even though I don't agree with everything she ever said, I still think she is a phenomenal thinker. Her philosophy is a perfect counterpoint to Islamism.

#5  I too found her intellectually enlightening and stimulating. However, I found her "reasons" for becoming an atheist to be shallow and juvenile, reflecting the fact that she was a jewish teenager making that decision in soviet russia. I engaged in a systematic reformulation of Objectivism with regard to Christianity, in the process becoming an intellectual terror to my teachers, both at school and church. However, a top theologian of the church thought I was sliced bread and wanted me to get into theology and be his PhD student. I was leaning toward physics myself, so had to beg off.

I'm going to snip off what's a longish theological discussion that I think should go onto my website. I'll post a link later.

Yeah, she died years ago, while I was teaching at a private college: I wore a black armband for a week in mourning.

As interpreted, current Christianity and Objectivism are indeed incompatible. However, if one disposes of certain assumptions made by both sides, especially those arising from allegorical, rather than literal, interpretations of Scriptural texts, a Theistic Objectivism is possible that is compatible with a literally interpreted Judaism or Christianity. there are problems with pretty much every other religion based on either social incompatibilities, basic assumptions, or patently unacceptable deities (i.e. those that are not necessary causes of reality).

If one recognizes that modern logical terminology was unknown to Christian or Hebrew recorders of scripture, then an Objectivist Christian can regard 'statements of faith' as axioms that can be input to a logical deductive process, yielding

#7  Rand's better works - "Atlas Shrugged", "Fountainhead", "Anthem" - are not the end point AFAIC, but are very definitely places one MUST stop along the way.

#8  I admire Rand almost as fiercly as I oppose her mischaracertization of Christianity. The militant atheists she attraced are what ultimately choked off Objectivism, relegating it to a minor corner (excpet for its influence on Republicans and libertarianism).

Duty, honor and curveballs
They asked their parents to send baseball gloves. When time lurched for Cpl. Cooper Brannan and the 12-man squad he led into war, they retreated to their barracks, grabbed the gloves caked with dust like everything else in Fallujah, Iraq, and remembered, momentarily, what home was like, only for the impediment of a 60-pound flak jacket to snap them to attention.

"Talk about bad mechanics," Brannan said Sunday, chuckling, which he could do now because he was at San Diego Padres spring training, and he was here to play for a living, a right-handed pitching prospect among dozens. Two hours earlier he had walked into the Padres' clubhouse and seen a jersey with his name striped across the back.

"This is about the military," said San Diego CEO Sandy Alderson, a former first lieutenant in the Marines and the man responsible for Brannan being a Padre. "This is about all Iraq veterans. This is about people who are wounded. This is a story that makes everybody feel good. And it's predicated on the fact that he can actually throw the baseball.
I might have to become a Padres fan now.
