DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a woman accused of killing her 1-month-old daughter by burning the child in a microwave oven. China Arnold could face the death penalty if a jury finds she deliberately killed her baby in a microwave oven. If convicted of aggravated murder, China Arnold, 27, could face the death penalty.
Investigators believe Arnold killed 1-month-old Paris Talley by putting her in a microwave at her home. Arnold's attorneys argue she had nothing to do with the baby's death in 2005. Coroner's officials have said the baby suffered high-heat internal injuries and had no external burns. They have ruled out scalding water, open flame or other possible causes of death that could have damaged the skin.
Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion has said Arnold had nothing to do with her daughter's death and was stunned when investigators told her that a microwave might have been involved. Arnold took the baby to the hospital after finding her unconscious and does not know how she died, Rion said.
During a pretrial hearing in July, police Detective Michael Galbraith said Arnold told him she arrived home in the early morning hours after drinking, fell asleep and was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the baby's crying. She said she warmed a bottle in the microwave oven, tried to give it to the baby, changed the child's diaper and then fell asleep on the couch with the baby on her chest.
Arnold said she and her children were the only ones in the apartment until her boyfriend arrived several hours later and noticed something was wrong with the baby.
Galbraith said Arnold told him: "If I hadn't gotten so drunk, I guess my baby wouldn't have died."
When cross-examined by Rion, Galbraith acknowledged that Arnold told him she did not know how the baby suffered the burns and that she had nothing to do with it that she could recall.
Earlier this month, defense witness Robert Belloto, a staff pharmacist at Good Samaritan Hospital, testified he does not believe it would have been possible for Arnold to place the baby in the microwave because the woman was so intoxicated. Belloto said Arnold told him she had consumed about 40 percent of a pint of high-proof rum in 90 minutes. But he acknowledged that he had no other corroboration for her claim.

NEW YORK (AP) - A state archivist was charged with stealing hundreds of artifacts—documents representing "the heritage of all Americans," according to the history buff who found some of them on eBay—to pay his household bills.
What else would an archivist steal fergawdsake?
Daniel Lorello, 54, is accused of taking the rare items from the New York State Library, including Davy Crockett Almanacs, Currier and Ives lithographs and the 1865 railroad timetable for Abraham Lincoln's funeral train. Authorities believe he hawked them for tens of thousands of dollars, using much of that to pay off his daughter's credit card debt.
"This crime is especially repugnant, because it's dealing with historic documents," state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said Monday. "It's literally stealing the legacy of the state of New York page by page."
Lorello, an archives and records management specialist in the New York Department of Education, pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and scheme to defraud and was released on his recognizance. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
In a handwritten statement released by Cuomo's office, Lorello said he took "more than 300 or 400 items in 2007 alone." He said he "particularly liked" artifacts associated with the Revolutionary, Civil and Mexican wars, World War I, black Americana and "anything related to the Roosevelts and Jewish items."
He wrote a handwritten statement. Then he pled not guilty. Riiiiiiight.
Officials found hundreds of documents and artifacts in Lorello's home over the weekend. Authorities believe the theft goes back to 2002, although it accelerated in 2007.
"I took things on an as-needed basis to pay family bills, such as house renovations, car bills, tuition and my daughter's credit card problem," Lorello wrote. He said he took many items last year because his daughter "unexpectedly ran up a $10,000 credit card bill."
Someone put a gun to her head?
Lorello also said his theft increased after he learned that surveillance cameras were to be installed in the library.
Joseph Romito, a Virginia attorney and avid history buff, tipped off authorities after he saw one of the items, a four-page letter from Vice President John Calhoun written in 1823, listed on eBay. "I wanted to identify the recipient of the letter," said Romito, who researched the document and discovered it belonged to the state library. "These kinds of items ... represent the heritage of all Americans," Romito said. "I am gratified that I had some small part to play in it."
The attorney general's office placed the winning bid of about $1,800 on Calhoun's letter. "We're working on recovering those documents sold on eBay," Cuomo said, noting that investigators planned to review Lorello's sales records. "We're asking the traders to please check their collections."
Lorello, who began working at the state archives in 1979, was placed on administrative leave from his $71,732-a-year job. He made no comment as he left court and messages left on his answering machine were not immediately returned.
It's unclear how much Lorello made from his sales. In some cases he went to trade shows and exchanged the stolen items for others, authorities said. But officials said in just two sales of Davy Crockett Almanacs—popular 19th-century pamphlets about the frontier hero's exploits—he received more than $5,000.

ELGIN, SC (WIS) - An Elgin man is under arrest after officials say he sent sexual text messages to a 14-year-old boy. Elgin Police Chief Harold Brown says Russell Spitzer "had given him some porn sites, mostly gay porn sites, had discussed sexuality with him."
An investigation started in late 2007, when Chief Brown says the boy's father returned from his military service overseas and learned that a relationship had started with his then 13-year-old son and Spitzer on the boy's MySpace page. That's when police say the boy's parents found him watching porn on the internet.
There was more. According to police, the 39-year-old Scout leader used his cell phone to send explicit text messages to the child. The latest one was sent last Thursday. A day later, Spitzer was in jail. Spitzer has been charged with giving obscene material to a minor, intent to contribute to the delinquency of a minor, and other charges.
Chief Brown worries there could be other victims. "There's always a possibility. I don't think Mr. Spitzer just decided a year and a half ago that he was going to do this, not at his age."
Spitzer was denied bond Monday, and another bond hearing was set for Thursday - bond was again denied.
Authorities say Spitzer is a Boy Scout leader and the victim was in the Boy Scouts. Spitzer has three sons of his own, all of whom are Boy Scouts and all of whom are in the same troop.
"I was shocked and saddened," says Larry Brown. Brown is the director of the Indian Waters Council of Boy Scouts. When the Boy Scout Council found out about the charges, they immediately removed Spitzer. "He cannot be a Scout leader anywhere in the country," says Brown.
Police in India raided hospitals and guest houses yesterday as part of an investigation into the illegal removal of kidneys from up to 500 poor labourers which were then sold to wealthy clients. Police suspect that dozens of doctors were involved in the racket, which had a waiting list of 40 people from at least five countries.
The scheme, centred on Gurgaon, a wealthy suburb of New Delhi, used luxury cars fitted with blood-testing machines to test donors, as well as surgical equipment hidden inside a residential neighbourhood.
The investigation is continuing and police are raiding hospitals' offices and guest houses, Gurgaon's police commissioner, Mohinder Lal, told reporters in Gurgaon. The main suspects, who police said have been tied to organ transplant rackets in the past, have apparently fled the country, Lal said. "We suspect around 400 or 500 kidney transplants were done by these doctors over the last nine years," Lal said last week.

A boy who has been partially deaf for nine years was suddenly cured - when a cotton wool bud popped out of his ear.
Jerome Bartens was diagnosed as deaf in his right ear when he was just two and has struggled at school ever since. But Jerome, now 11, was suddenly able to hear clearly again as he played with friends in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. He said he heard a popping sound, then found the tip of a cotton wool bud in his ear.
His family believe Jerome must have put the bud in his ear as a toddler and the centimetre-long cotton tip came off the plastic stem.

FRANKFURT (Rooters) - German nudists will be able to start their holidays early by stripping off on the plane if they take up a new offer from an eastern German travel firm.
Travel agency OssiUrlaub.de said it would start taking bookings from Friday for a trial nudist day trip from the eastern German town of Erfurt to the popular Baltic Sea resort of Usedom, planned for July 5 and costing 499 euros ($735).
"It's expensive, I know," managing director Enrico Hess told Reuters by phone. "It's because the plane's very small. There's no real reason why a flight in which one flies naked should be more expensive than any other."
The 55 passengers will have to remain clothed until they board, and dress before disembarking, said Hess. The crew will remain clothed throughout the flight for safety reasons.
"I wish I could say we thought of it ourselves but the idea came from a customer," Hess told Reuters by phone. "It's an unusual gap in the market."
Naturism, or "free body culture" (FKK) as it is known in Germany, was banned by the Nazis but blossomed again after the Second World War, particularly in eastern Germany.
"There are FKK hotels where you can go into the restaurants and shops naked, for example," Hess said. "For FKK fans -- not that I'm one of them -- it's nothing unusual."

A Kuwaiti lawman said here Monday the world economic and political atmosphere had led to growing economic crimes. Nahes al-Enezi, a lawyer at the Supreme Constitutional Court, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that he had made such remarks in a lecture in a legal training program for young law graduates, organized by the Public Institution for Social Security, on economic and financial crimes.

He elaborated economic crimes as a set of illicit activities targeting public interest. He recalled to memory that economic crimes initially appeared in the 1930s, taking up fresh forms and manifestations in the era of globalization.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) chose seven environmentalists, including a Yemeni and a Sudanese, as this year's "Champions of the Earth" for spearheading efforts to advance sustainable development and combat climate change, it was announced here on Monday.
The champions, who will receive their prize at a ceremony scheduled for April 22 in Singapore, are Abdul-Qader Ba-Jammal, the Secretary-General of the Yemen People's General Congress, Balgis Osman-Elasha, a senior researcher at Sudan's Higher Council for Environment Natural Resources and Atiq Rahman, the Executive Director of the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies.
The other four champions are the Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark, Prince Albert II of Monaco, former US Senator Timothy E. Wirth and the former Energy and Environment Minister of Barbados Liz Thompson.
