Sheldon Silver guilty in multimillion dollar corruption case
[NYPost] The ex-speaker of the New York state Assembly Sheldon Silver was found guilty on Friday of selling his office for $4 million in kickbacks ‐ affirming a 2015 conviction on the same charges that had been overturned on appeal.

A jury of seven women and five men found Silver, 74, guilty of all seven counts against him, including two counts of honest services mail fraud and money laundering.

He faces as much as 130 years in prison when sentenced on July 13.

Silver showed no emotion as the jury read the verdict to the judge.

"Obviously I am disappointed," the Lower East Side Democrat said outside of court, adding that he will appeal the verdict.

The verdict is a crushing blow to Silver, who was once one of the three most powerful men in New York along with the governor and Senate majority leader.

In 2015 he was sentenced to 12 years in prison, which his lawyers argued was a death sentence for the septuagenarian, who was fighting prostate cancer at the time.

Silver was saved from prison after a federal appeals court ruled that errors in the judge's jury instructions warranted a new trial.

The jury overseeing the retrial reached their verdict after slightly more than one day of deliberation following a week-and-a-half-long trial that included 26 witnesses and dozens of exhibits.

#4  “Think about what happened in Houston this past year, think about Puerto Rico. You see disaster strike and political ideologies fall the wayside.

No, they don't. In fact, exactly the opposite. Hurricane Katrina happened because Bush hated black people. In Puerto Rico, Trump was blamed for years of neglect to the power grid and roads, and for not sending the supplies that were shown sitting on pallets in a warehouse.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
EU statement opposing U.S. embassy move is blocked by Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania, in coordination with Israel.
[Axios] Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania, in coordination with Israel, today blocked a joint EU statement criticizing the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, Israeli officials and European diplomats told me.
Oh my.
Behind the scenes: The initiative to publish the statement was led by France and several other EU member states. Israeli officials say the goal was to present to the U.S. a common position against the move by all 28 member states, and to embarrass and isolate the Trump administration ahead of Monday's ceremony.

According to European diplomats and Israeli officials, the draft statement circulated in European capitals had three points:

o Jerusalem should be the capital of both states ‐ Israel and the future state of Palestine.
o The final status of Jerusalem should be negotiated and only determined through negotiations between the parties.
o The member states of the EU will not follow the U.S. and will not move their embassies to Jerusalem.

According to European diplomats and Israeli officials the French and other member states wanted to publish the statement today as a statement by the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini supported by all 28 EU members.

But earlier today, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania announced they object to the statement and made it impossible to reach the consensus needed to publish it.

A senior European diplomat told me with a lot of frustration: "The Hungarians didn't want to poke Trump in the eye and the Czechs and the Romanians are considering to move their embassies to Jerusalem against the EU position. This is the state of the EU these days".
Never been so proud of eastern Europe
