-Lurid Crime Tales-
Old lefty mouths off, pays price
He's the "Jack La Lanne" of Summertree. Every day starts with 200 situps in the workout room of the clubhouse. Then Donald Taggart lifts weights and does his cardio. Residents liken him to La Lanne, the aging fitness icon whose photo hangs in the room. Taggart, 78 and still buff, likes to get physical.

It got really physical Tuesday.

It was about 7:30 a.m. when Taggart arrived at the workout room in sweats. A Pasco Sheriff's Office report describes the reception he got:

"How come you're so cold?" asked Benjamin Nodar, 64. "I thought you were in the Army!"

Taggart was, for 26 years. "I was in Korea in 1950," he told Nodar. "I was up on the Yalu River when the Chinese came across, probably when you were in grade school, and I got frostbite on my hands and feet. A little bit of cold bothers me."

Nodar, according to Taggart, wasn't impressed: "You military people, always crying the blues."

More words were exchanged. The report said Taggart called Nodar a wimp for not serving his country. Nodar, according to a witness, told Taggart he should have died in the Army.

Nodar got in his face, Taggart said. Then, witnesses say, the 215-pound Nodar lunged at a man 14 years older and about 45 pounds lighter than him.

It was on.

Nodar grabbed Taggart. Taggart kneed Nodar.

The retirees fell through the doorway of the men's bathroom and tumbled onto the floor, still fighting.

"I said 'You big sucker, I ain't gonna let you get on top of me,' " Taggart said. "So I got on top, and I stayed there."

Taggart said he rolled Nodar onto his back and pinned his wrists to his sides. "I just overpowered him," Taggart said.

Deputies were called. They arrived 10 minutes later.

Nodar told deputies Taggart gave him a hard time about not being in the military, kicked him, tripped him and sat on him. Both were bleeding.

Nodar was arrested on a charge of battery on a person over the age of 65 - but not accused of getting the better of one.

#7  Local media spin (in the week before an election!) was very negative towards connolly; that his actions "redefined STUPID". At first, I did not even recognize who was on TV, only the name seemed familiar. It seems the years have not treated TC kindly. He was all puffy faced and rambling; a real-life caricature of a raving moonbat. The press wants nothing to do with him. And to think, at one time he ran for Governor of Maine. (Think of a more intense version of Gore on a smaller stage)

Robber dies from self-inflicted wound
A man found dead on an Oakland street early Saturday morning from a gunshot wound may have accidentally shot himself a short time earlier while robbing a Pinole liquor store, according to investigators. Police officers found the body of Sharffeequa Williams, 24, about 1:15 a.m. in the 1600 block of 12th Street after he apparently bled to death from a wound to his femoral artery.
Those bleed like stink.
During the hold-up of Appian Liquors, Williams initially placed the handgun on the counter so he could grab cash from the register, Oakland police detective Sgt. Phil Green said.
Not especially safe, either, if the clerk is quick with his hands.
But as Williams placed the gun back into his waistband, he squeezed the trigger and shot himself, Green said.
Guess he never educated himself on the location of the safety.
The shooting was caught on security footage, the sergeant said.
I can only hope it shows up on YouTube.
A second suspect also took part in the robbery ...
... apparently not well versed in first aid ...
... and both men fled from the store in a dark-colored American vehicle similar to a Ford Crown Victoria, Pinole police said.
"What kind of car was it?"
"An American car, looked like a Crown Vic."
So what was it?"
"A Crown Vic."
Police recovered a handgun the men dropped at the scene when they fled, Pinole police Officer Ken Lindberg said.

Woman dies next to own grave
Saves a lot on hassle when it comes to moving the body.
AMSTERDAM (Rooters) - A Dutch woman, who had meticulously planned her own funeral after the death of her husband last year, died next to the grave in Amsterdam where she wanted to be buried, a newspaper reported.

The 65-year-old widow probably died of a heart attack while she was visiting the family grave where her name, but no date, was already inscribed, De Telegraaf daily reported Wednesday.

The woman was carrying a bag with her containing her will when she died and had already organized details of her funeral including the music she wanted played, the paper said.

Smiling Bob Settles For $4.7 Million
Hat tip Interested Participant.
2News has learned that a Dayton judge ruled on a multi-million dollar reward for men who were left frowning by Smiling Bob. Chances are you've seen the Enzyte commercial featuring the character Smiling Bob.
Full o' confidence he is. I have to confess, however, that I'd be about as willing to be 'Bob' in the ads as I would be to walk down the aisle in a fashion show wearing a black lace bro.
Lawsuits were filed in Dayton, Los Angeles, and Barber, Alabama against the company that sold the herbal supplement known as Enzyte. But without admitting liability, Cincinnati-based Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals put forth a settlement offer.
"You mean our stuff doesn't work? Bob sez otherwise!"
"The court approved the creation of a settlement fund of $4.7 million and they'll be a claims process and a notice sent out. And individuals who were affected will have an opportunity to make a claim," Attorney Jeff Goldenberg told 2News.
Works out to a limp two dollars per claimant after the stiff take for the lawyers.
More than 1.5 million men said the all-herbal natural male enhancement supplement known as Enzyte did not work for them. But they said they could not get their money back from Berkeley Nutraceuticals.
Apparently they had a flaccid response.
Goldenberg said this settlement will get them a refund, and also dismiss federal fraud charges against Berkeley. "When you think you've been harmed by a company, regardless of how small the damage, there is mechanisms in the legal process to assist you and others whether its ten others or five million other people."

Attorneys for the class members said the ten people who originally brought forth the complaint will receive more money for their trouble in addition to their share of the $4.7 million settlement.
Since they helped firm up the suit.

#3  Ironically, Viagra and derivatives have turned out to be one of the most important drugs of the 20th Century, for odd reasons:

First of all, because it works, it killed off the huge market in endangered species used as aphrodisiacs, saving dozens of species.

Second, it is believed to work on all mammals, including endangered species, which meant that breeding more of them in captivity became a lot easier.

Third, it is now being used for all sorts of medical conditions, to include pediatric cardiac therapy for a fairly common and serious heart problem suffered by many infants.

It turns out to be one of the better vasodilators and new uses are still being discovered for it.

#5  Viagra is a life-saver for people with primary pulmonary hypertension. That disease usually kills within a year, and often requires lung transplants or heart-lung transplants, which aren't exactly common.

#11  Any time someone starts that "all-natural" crap with me about any supposed medication or treatment, I like to remind them that syphillis and gangrene are all-natural and organic as well. If the natural ingredient formulas had worked, Viagra would NOT have been invented. Like the stupids that are against antibiotics for bacterial infections -- if those herbs and teas had really worked, why were infections a death sentence 100 years ago?
Posted by: Shieldwolf || 11/02/2006 18:51 Comments || Top||

#12  The incredible improvement in terms of quality of life notwithstanding, 'moose's first point stands alone in its importance.

First of all, because it works, it killed off the huge market in endangered species used as aphrodisiacs, saving dozens of species.

While traffic in endangered animal parts still exists, there is little reason for it to continue. More importantly, we need to make all such poaching an instant death sentence. Game wardens should have shoot-on-sight orders for enforcement within game reserves.

As an example, a researcher was conducting experiments on frogs which required a minor surgical procedure. After operating and suturing back up the frogs they would be tossed back into their tanks. Their, slimy, muddy, detritus filled tanks. It slowly dawned upon those involved that the frogs were not succumbing to infections at anywhere near the rate that would have been expected. Why was this?

It turns out that in order to combat the incredibly bacertia-filled world that frogs inhabit, their skin secretes a powerful anti-bacterial agent that protects them. Current research is being directed at adapting this agent for use against drug resistant strains that pose immense health risks in modern hospitals.

The final point being: We never know when a certain species of animal, tree, insect or whatever will suddenly turn out to be the secret to fighting AIDS, cancer or who knows what unforseen plague. Nature has spent billions of years perfecting the survival mechanisms of its denizens. Each and every one of them represents a potential solution to a host of human survival problems. All of which dissappear forever if that species goes extinct. Viagra will help save the tiger, rhinocerous and many other animals from extinction. This one single contribution is worthy of a nobel prize.

Arabia
Saoodi F-15 crashes in desert
RIYADH - A US-made F-15 fighter plane crashed on Wednesday during a training session in an eastern region of Saudi Arabia but the pilot survived, the defence ministry said. The fighter jet fell in a training zone some 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the King Abdul Aziz airbase, a ministry official said, as quoted by the SPA state news agency.

The pilot survived the crash, which occurred in the desert, the unnamed official said. A committee has been formed to establish the cause of the crash.

#5  It wouldn't be the first time, skidmark. Back in the 70's a Saudi F5 pilot forgot how to do something while in the air(put the landing gear down?) so he ejected and destroyed his aircraft. He tried to claim that, as the sky belonged to allen, it wasn't his fault. The King no-likey that story; and the pilot was executed.

#6  A true, slightly OT story re: ejection seats: while stationed @ Pax river doing work with a ME country's F-18, part of the contract required we R7R the seat for a new one. Seemed one of our test Pilots was a (shudder) woman and no self respecting camel jockey would or could use a seat that had been warmed by the uncovered meat. New seat pan or cushions was not satisfactory, had to be a full up zero time, right from McDonnell Douglas seat.

Turkey court clears archaeologist
A court in the Turkish city of Istanbul has acquitted a 92-year-old academic of charges of insulting Muslim women and inciting religious hatred.
She linked the wearing of headscarves with ancient Sumerian sexual rites.
Archaeologist Muazzez Ilmiye Cig was prosecuted over a book in which she linked the wearing of headscarves with ancient Sumerian sexual rites.

The judge ruled at the first hearing of her trial that her actions did not constitute a crime. Dr Cig's publisher was also cleared in a trial lasting less than half an hour. The archaeologist was applauded by supporters as she left the courtroom.

This trial is the latest in a series of prosecutions of Turkish intellectuals, including 2006 Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk and novelist Elif Shafak.
Charges were brought against her by a Turkish lawyer who took offence at her 2005 book "My Reactions as a Citizen". In the book Dr Cig said that headscarves were first worn more than 5,000 years ago by Sumerian priestesses who initiated young men into sex.

Dr Cig is an expert in the ancient Sumerian civilisation which emerged in Mesopotamia in the third millennia BC. The issue of headscarves has polarised Turkey in recent years. Although predominantly Muslim, Turkey is a secular state and headscarves are banned in government offices and universities. The ruling Justice and Development Party, which has roots in political Islam, has unsuccessfully tried to lift the headscarf ban.

Rich Daley: Kerry's Iraq remark `a sad joke'
Mayor Richard Daley, whose son is a soldier, said Wednesday that Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) was wrong for telling students they will "get stuck in Iraq" if they don't make the most of their educational opportunities.

The remark was "uncalled for," Daley said. If Kerry's comment was meant as a joke, it was "a sad joke."

Asked if he took it personally because his son, Patrick, is in the Army, Daley said, "I think everybody should take it personally. It doesn't matter if you have a son or daughter in the military."

Patrick Daley, a member of the 82d Airborne Division, enlisted in 2004.

My early voting experience today
I voted early this morning in my suburb just outside of Chicago, and thought I'd pass along some observations. Given the controversy about voting this year it was indeed interesting to see how my village handled early voting.

I live in Cook County, and early voting for my precinct was done at the village hall. When I arrived I waited in a short line for a minute, and while I did so I filled out the 'early voting' registration form. There were six voting machines (more on that in a moment) and a half-dozen election judges supervising the vote. When I got to the table one judge asked for my drivers license.

Drivers license? You mean an honest-to-goodness photo ID?

Yep. Early voting in Illinois requires a photo ID. The registration form listed the acceptable forms of ID. Of the half-dozen people in line, not one complained or said that they didn't have a photo ID. Everyone produced a drivers license save one woman who presented her (American) passport.

After presenting my license, the judge turned to a computer screen and punched in my license number. My photo and signature appeared on screen, and she carefully compared my license, my signature on the registration form, her screen and my face. I was then cleared to vote, and after a short wait went to an open voting machine. Another judge handed me a plastic card to insert in the machine and informed me that if I needed help she would be there to walk me through the process.

The machine was a 'Sequoia' brand touch screen. The screen was bright, the instructions clear, and when you touched a box for a candidate a large green checkmark appeared, so it was easy to see what you just did. I went through about a dozen screeens pointing at candidates. At the end there was, as I expected, a chance to review my vote on the screen. I had deliberately left one office open, and sure enough my deficiency was shown in red on the screen. I went back and corrected that without a problem.

Then something happened that was a pleasant surprise. Observant person that I am, I had totally ignored a small, separate device with a window to my right in the booth. When I finished with the last review screen, my vote was presented again on the main screen AND on a paper roll on the device to the right. That was behind glass so you couldn't touch it, but you had the opportunity to see that, on screen and on paper, your vote was as you wanted it. I then checkmarked the 'cast ballot' button on the main screen and the paper roll whirred away into a storage box. While I don't know this for sure, I rather suspect that the paper roll serves as a permanent audit for that particular voting machine.

The entire process took 20 minutes. Presenting a photo ID was no problem at all. The touch screen worked flawlessly. The paper trail is visible.

How did I vote? Heh, how do you think?

#7  Good to hear this.
Here in Colorado, one of the items listed that says will do to register for an absentee ballot is a copy of a current utility bill.
Hell I had to show my driver's license a few months ago just to buy sudafed, because of all the crystal methamphetamine labs cropping up everywhere.
I worry about many folks voting that shouldn't be. Illegals come to mind here too.

#8  to compare the validity of a driver's license or military ID, to a utility bill as being just as good is ridiculous. Also in some cases they just need to know the number, not show the license. Check it out:

ChiTown Shakedown
Garage deal approved despite Tillman's objections
Four years ago, Chicago became the nation's first major city to issue a "moral and ethical challenge" to companies with which it does business: Come clean about past ties to slavery or get off the governmental gravy train.

Now, that law is about to be put to the test with a lucrative deal hanging in the balance: Mayor Daley's $563 million plan to privatize the Millennium and Grant Park garages.

#1  I think a lot of this nonsense could be solved right now by some witty individual creating a DNA database. Then take the few known documented slave ancestors and determine their DNA.

This means that if you submit a DNA test, you might qualify for whatever percent of your DNA is attributable to that proven slave ancestor.

Of course, by now, with very few exceptions, the most any African-American could prove to be of slave ancestry would be about 1/15th of their DNA. For the vast majority, they couldn't prove *any* of their genetic ancestors were slaves.

So this means that the MOST they could get out of any class-action "reparations" lawsuit would be 1/15th of an individual settlement amount. So, for example, if the individual "reparations" were determined to be $10,000 per litigant, after attorneys fees, the most they could get would be $666.67

That would be the maximum amount. However, the typical individual class action payment is usually less than $1,000. This would mean that the greatest amount of reparations would realistically be around $66.67 per individual.

And, of course, the DNA database of all African-Americans who participated in the class action lawsuit would have to be administered by the US government.

In turn, this would prove to be a treasure-trove of DNA evidence in outstanding and future criminal investigations, as DNA obtained as part of civil court actions is available for such criminal inquiries.

It could result in the arrest and imprisonment of thousands of African-Americans. And thus the circle would be complete.

#2  This selling of the parking places and roads and everything is NOT COOL!

I give Dorthy (the hat lady) Tillman kudos for finding an imaginative way to attempt halting that crook Daley.

BTW Daley's wife is in the LANDSCAPING BIZ and will likely be a prime contractor for all those parks just like see was for the $1bill plus overrun called Millennium Park/Garages.

She should get an A+ for creativity!

Arnold on course for crushing win
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is poised to inflict a crushing defeat on Democratic challenger Phil Angelides, according to a new poll released on Wednesday, ahead of next week's elections.

The Republican action-hero-turned-politician has opened up a 16-point lead over Angelides ahead of the November 7 ballot and now appears to be coasting to an emphatic victory as Election Day looms. A Field Poll released Wednesday gave Schwarzenegger a 49 percent to 33 percent margin over Angelides, a remarkable turnaround for the Austrian-born incumbent, who trailed his opponent one year ago. Analysts say Schwarzenegger has taken control of the race in Democrat-dominated California by shifting to the centre and wooing voters by distancing himself from the unpopular administration of President George W Bush.

Cleland backs John Forbes Kerry's Sense of Humor
HT to Denny at GrouchyOldCripple in Atlanta, one of the most humorous un-PC sites on the web. Denny, who's in a wheelchair, calls Cleland "Stumpy" lol. Denny's unrelenting on this Dem hack

Former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) on Tuesday voiced his support for Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who became embroiled in controversy after comments he made Monday appeared to imply that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.

"John Kerry is a patriot who has fought tooth and nail for veterans ever since he came home from Vietnam," Cleland, who lost three limbs in Vietnam, said in a statement. "He has stood with his brothers in arms unlike this [Bush] Administration which exploits our troops to make a political point and divide America."

During a campaign rally for California gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides Monday, Kerry said, "Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, and you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Conservatives criticized Kerry for implying that U.S. soldiers join the military because they're stupid and can't succeed elsewhere.

Calling his critics "right wing nut-jobs," Kerry said in a news conference Tuesday that his comment was a "botched joke" intended to make fun of the president.

Cleland said anyone who thought Kerry's comment was insulting the troops has "a partisan political agenda and that's the bottom line."
he would know...
"John Kerry should apologize to no one for his criticism of the President and his broken policy in Iraq," he added. "George Bush is the one who owes our troops an apology."

Echoing Kerry's reaction Tuesday, Cleland said criticism of the "botched joke" is "textbook Republican campaign tactics."

Numerous Republicans on Tuesday called for Kerry to apologize for the comment from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), who also served in Vietnam, to President Bush himself.

"The members of the United States military are plenty smart, and they are plenty brave," Bush said during a campaign appearance in Georgia Tuesday evening. "And the senator from Massachusetts owes them an apology."

High-profile Democrats, including members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have remained silent on the matter.

So was Benedict Arnold and Jefferson Davis, up to a point. Sort of went down hill quickly after certain events transpired. Personally, I think that was when Kerry, while still a commissioned reserve naval officer, met with representatives of the North Vietnamese government during the war.

How about using the same standard of inappropriate joke that the Donk's had for Secretary of the Interior Watt during Reagan's administration? Oh, that’s right, fundamental tenet of the Socialist left, one set of rules for me and another set of rules for thee.

#7  I think you are referring to an Ann Coulter article. Beer drinking and one of his buddies dropped a grenade. Cleland picked it up w/o realizing the pin was out.

Cleland admitted it was a noncombat situation, though I don't know if he mentioned alcohol was involved. Irregardless, Cleland did receive a Silver Star for actions before the grenade mishap.

#12  "Cleland said anyone who thought Kerry's comment was insulting the troops has a partisan political agenda and that's the bottom line."

How fucking arrogant of a statement is that? How many people that actually voted for that stiff were insulted by the insinuation of his comments as delivered? How many of those same people, even after his tortured explanation, believe that war is no joking matter and is beneath the dignity of a US Senator? How many think crass remarks about the intellect of a sitting war-time President shouldn’t be considered legitimate criticism of foreign policy? One Senator does not make up a political party but the response from Kerrys’ apologists is emblematic of the party that has no real viable alternatives and therefore continues to choose politics over principle.

I lost my best childhood and teen frien in Vietnam on March 19, 1969. Lance Corporal Clyde Northington (my cousin) was in Co. A 9th Marines when they walked into an ambush in the Aw Shit Valley. He exposed himself to enemy fire to rescue and treat wounded buddies then led an attack on a machine gun position that was eliminated. He was killed a short time later by a mortar round. He EARNED his Silver Star. I have no use for people like Kerry and Cleland.
Posted by: Deacon Blues || 11/02/2006 19:08 Comments || Top||

#15  Agreed, Deacon. My uncle/godfather was a young sgt in the light infantry regiment deployed thinly, with no artillery backup, to stop the elite German Nordwind attackers at Bastogne.

They took over 42% casualties in a matter of weeks.

And during that time he was awarded a Silver Star, multiple Bronze Stars, multiple Purple Hearts. Came home with permanent nerve damage from the bitter cold - they didn't have even hot meals for the first weeks, temperatures never got above freezing. Came home with the memories of having 3 squads shot up around him, of taking out several pillboxes, wounded, as his buddies died in the attempts.

Kerry's 'decorations'? I am loathe to set the precedent of ever disparaging military decorations, lest those who honorably earned them be in any way impacted. But in his case .....

I graduated in 1996, so I'm more of a newbie than most here in the 'burg. 9/11 (and carpooling with a couple of muslims I still wonder about) changed everything for me. I was really too young to remember 'nam, and barely remember Tehran 1979, which is where this all started in my book. I have no military experience whatsoever, but truly appreciate and honor those who do and whom are serving as we type.

6 escape, 2 cops killed in jailbreak
QUETTA: Six prisoners escaped from a Baloch jail on Wednesday when armed men, disguised as visitors, smuggled weapons into the prison and opened-fire on policemen, killing two, officials said. The jailbreak occurred in the remote town of Turbat, approximately 600 kilometres southwest of Quetta, police said. “The attackers in the garb of visitors managed to take weapons inside the prison then fired at police guards and six prisoners managed to escape during the shoot-out,” local police official Mohammad Afzal told AFP. “Two policemen were killed and four others were wounded in the firing,” he said.

Azfal said that more than a dozen attackers had arrived at the jail in two vehicles. One group went inside the prison to launch the breakout, while those remaining outside gave them covering fire afterwards. Another police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that a notorious drug trafficker, Ghulam Rasool, as well as Mohammad Yasin, Tabish, Mohammad Baksh and Wazir, were among those prisoners who had escaped. Some of the prisoners, he said, had been incarcerated on murder charges.

The shoot-out took place in the visitors’ room when the armed men began firing indiscriminately at jail officials, killing two on the spot and injuring four others, said prison officials.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Kinder, Gentler, Church of IslamSatan
Some might argue the life of a mortgage broker is a living hell. For Mike Grace, of Birmingham, Mich., it's not too far from the truth. By day, he studies to be a loan officer. By night, he is High Magus Noxaura, the founder of the Reformed Church of Satan.
Reformed? Do I want to know how "reformed?"

But this is a kinder, gentler Satanist, the Metro Times of Detroit reports. The church doesn't worship Beelzebub, it believes in taking responsibility for your own actions and being your own god. "I don't care how much fun killing people is," Grace joked to the paper, "that sort of thing is just not acceptable."

He's even got a Web site, positivesatanism.org

Sadly, Grace fell from grace grace? himself a few days after speaking with the weekly newspaper. He was fired from his promising brokerage position. "You cannot be a religious leader without your faith being tested," he told the paper.
Conflict of interest: the company wanted the fools' souls for itself.

Then again, I haven't heard of many Satanists crashing airplanes into buildings or blowing children. In fact, those who do claim to be fighting The Great Satan. Maybe this is worth a look.

There's my issue with real satanists. The Black Mass stuff and other accoutrements are shtick for PR purposes and to get a rise out of excitable Christians and media. Genuine crimes done for "satanic" reasons are almost always committed by dabblers and wannabes - the kind of people that buy copies of The Necronomicon and actually try the spells.
