Sex Workers Don't Trust Kamala Harris - Nor Should Anyone Else
[Motherboard] On Monday morning, Senator Kamala Harris announced that she’s running for president. This was no surprise‐Harris’s run has been rumored for months.

As the daughter of immigrants, with a record of upholding rights for marginalized communities on several occasions, Harris should be an ideal progressive candidate. Many sex workers and sex worker rights advocates, however, vehemently disagree.

Last year, Harris, the former Attorney General of California, helped champion the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), a piece of legislation sex workers and advocacy groups warned would have a disastrous impact on sex workers’ lives‐and they were right. FOSTA passed in April 2018 with Harris’s support, and she released a statement touting how proud she was to have helped move this bill through Congress, saying she has "witnessed firsthand the difficulty of charging sex trafficking sites‐even for crimes as egregious as pimping minors."

Harris and other FOSTA supporters claimed its passage would allow authorities to shut down websites like Backpage.com‐an escort advertising site that was an alleged hotbed for trafficking activity. It was also a primary source of income for many independent sex workers. Backpage and other advertising sites allowed sex workers to be financially independent and find and screen work for themselves, off the streets and away from actual traffickers or abusive "managers" and pimps.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Senior Iranian General's Visit To Syria Prompted Israeli Strikes - Report
(JP) Iran threatened to escalate the situation in the Middle East if Israel continues to attack in Syria, according to a report by Kuwaiti paper Al-Jarida.

"Quds Force commander Maj.-Gen. Qasem Soleimani visited southern Syria, and that was the trigger for the current round of Israeli-Iranian conflict," the report said. "Soleimani's visit to a location less than 40 km. from the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights violated a previous American-Russian-Israeli agreement" regarding the Iranian presence in the country.

Soleimani's secret visit, which lasted two hours and was monitored by intelligence officials, according to the report, occurred two days before Iranian forces fired a missile from an area near Damascus into the Israeli Golan Heights on Sunday, in response to Israeli attacks in Syria.

SYRIA WARNED IN ADVANCE
The Iranian Supreme National Security Council convened on Monday night and listened to Soleimani's report on his visit to Syria and the Israeli attacks, a senior Iranian official told the paper.

The source also conveyed that the Russians notified the Iranians 30 minutes in advance which targets Israel would attack. The Iranians managed to evacuate the areas and minimize the damage.

Soleimani said that the only way to stop the Israeli attacks is to respond with three missiles for every one Israel fires, and to attempt to intercept any Israeli fighter jets, even those flying over Lebanon. He stressed the need to pressure the Syrian government to respond to the Israeli attacks, especially after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted Israel was responsible for them.

According to international law, Netanyahu's declaration makes Syrian retaliation legitimate, according to the source.

Soleimani also related to the upcoming Israeli elections and said that an Iranian attack in Israel would destroy Netanyahu's chances, and that otherwise Netanyahu will continue the Israeli aggression against Iran until he wins the elections.

According to the source, the Iranian Supreme National Security Council decided to continue pressure on the Syrian government to respond to future Israeli attacks, and to send a message to Russia that Iran will retaliate as it sees fit if any Iranian force is targeted.

"The UN [Security Council]’s failure to act against Israel and the support it receives from permanent members of the UNSC has encouraged the Israeli aggression," the Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Ja’afari said Tuesday night. "There were no calls to halt such acts by this UNSC, in light of the position of the US, Britain and France, who are partners and supporters of Israel...[but] Syria intends to exercise its right to self-defense and to work to take back the Golan Heights."

Ja'afari also said Syria threatened to attack Ben-Gurion Airport in response to Israel's aerial strike against a weapons storage site at Damascus International Airport earlier this week.

Study: Big Pharma Pill-Pushing Dollars Led to Overdose Deaths
[Free Beacon] Pharmaceutical firms' direct marketing to doctors continues to cause prescription opioid deaths, a new study argues.

The study, released Friday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, uses publicly available data from Medicare, Medicaid, and the Centers for Disease Control to match prescribing rates with prescription opioid overdose rates. Deaths from "Natural or semisynthetic opioids"‐the CDC code which generally refers to deaths from prescription opioids like Vicodin or Dilaudid‐totaled just under 15,000 in 2017.

The study's authors note that while prescription pills are not the primary cause of opioid-involved overdose deaths‐that distinction belongs to fentanyl, as well as heroin‐they are usually the first opioids encountered by subsequent users of heroin/fentanyl. There were still almost 200 million opioid prescriptions issued in 2017, which the authors claim results in a rate three times higher than 1999.

Further, they note, "Direct-to-physician marketing by pharmaceutical companies is widespread in the United States and is associated with increased prescribing of the marketed products." One in 12 doctors received opioid-related marketing between 2013 and 2015; that figure rises to one in five among family physicians.

Direct-to-physician marketing was a key component of pharmaceutical firms' strategy to push pills to patients in the lead up to the current opioid crisis. The practice involves sales representatives approaching physicians, all-expenses paid trips to pharma-sponsored seminars on the benefits of prescription opioids, and even lucrative speaking gigs for those doctors who do the best job pushing a given drug.

Purdue Pharma, the creator of OxyContin, reportedly compiled comprehensive profiles of physicians to better target them and offered enormous bonuses, up to a quarter of a million dollars, for sales representatives who sold directly to major prescribers. A Senate report released last year found that five opioid manufacturers in five years alone spent $9 million in support of "patient advocate" groups responsible for downplaying the dangers of opioids to physicians.

#2  "The study's authors note that while prescription pills are not the primary cause of opioid-involved overdose deaths..."

There are legitimate uses for opioids in pain management and most prescription users take them responsibly. The few who buy/use the illegal stuff are ruining the quality of life for those that do not by driving the statistics.

Hmmm...handgun parallel anyone?
Posted by: Warthog || 01/23/2019 9:53 Comments || Top||

#3  Prescription opioids continue to contribute to more than 17000 deaths from overdoses annually in the United States. The study reported that this number represents 40% of all the annual opioid deaths in the U.S. That would mean that 60% of the deaths are from non-prescribed opiates.

The following report states there were 72,000 drug-related deaths in 2017. This was from all drugs, opiates, cocaine, meth, heroin, fentanyl and any other drugs.

The study results (17,000) are the tip of the iceberg of the drug problem in the U.S. Some of these drugs are stolen and others smuggled into the U.S. The drug problem is good reason to better control our borders (particularly the southern border). Judicial Watch published an article about illegal drugs coming in to the U.S. titled " DEA: Most Illegal Drugs Enter via Mexico, Cartels Greatest Criminal Threat to U.S. (Nov. 2015)" Here.

#5  The majority of deaths are STILL due to non-prescribed opiates.
What galls me the most is that the USA continues to subsidize small package shipments from China to the USA, without inspecting each & every one for illegal drugs. This should have already been done years ago, and damn the cost. Pres. Xi told Trump he would make fentanyl a controlled subtance in China, but those were just words.
Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 01/23/2019 14:42 Comments || Top||

#6  A wild proposal: reguire all US manufacturers of opiates to produce and then donate opiate blockers like Narcan to first responders & hospitals. The mathematics of how much Narcan will block how many mg of morphine or fentanyl has already been worked out. Any company able to produce fentanyl is fully able to produce naloxone, Donation of the drug will slash its price on the market to very little. There is virtually no use for opiate blockers outside of opiate overdoses and treatment of addiction. Naturally this cannot be done or even considered by our representatives.

#7  Purdue is the major manufacturer of Oxycontin. They also market treatment for addiction. Purdue is a company owned by the Sackler family of Connecticut. The state of Kentucky has sued Purdue. The State of Massachusetts has also gone after them.

Europe
Brexit: Sony to move European HQ from UK to Netherlands to avoid disruption
TOKYO (AFP) - Sony will shift its European headquarters from Britain to the Netherlands to avoid Brexit-related customs issues, but operations at its current UK company will remain unchanged, a company spokesman said on Wednesday (Jan 23).

"We are moving the location of our European headquarters' registration to the Netherlands" by the end of March, company spokesman Takashi Iida told AFP.

The relocation is aimed at avoiding cumbersome customs-related procedures after Britain leaves the European Union, he said.

The Japanese electronics giant late last year registered a new company in the Netherlands, and plans to integrate its existing European headquarters in Britain into the new company.

The move will make the firm "a company based in the EU", so the bloc's common customs procedures will apply to Sony's European operations after Britain relinquishes membership, Iida said.

Sony, however, will not move personnel and operations from the existing UK company to the Netherlands, and "the only change we will make is the change of registered location of the company", he added.

Its rival Panasonic last year moved its European headquarters from Britain to the Netherlands over concerns about potential Brexit-related tax issues.

#2  Consider poor Airbus; they have just recently discovered the coming Brexit and now have their panties in a knot because most of their wings are built in the UK. And there is currently no sort of agreement between the UK and EASA for airworthiness approvals.
Several other major aerospace companies also have business units in the UK and also haven't got a plan for post-March 29 festivities.

Syria Threatens To Attack Ben-Gurion, Return To Occupied Golan
[Jerusalem Post] Syria threatened to attack Ben-Gurion International Airport in response to Israel's aerial strike against a weapons storage site at Damascus International Airport earlier this week.

The Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Ja’afari warned of the possibility of such a retaliatory attack, when he spoke Tuesday at the UN Security Council’s monthly meeting on the Middle East in New York.

"Isn’t it high time for this council to take the necessary measures to stop the repeated Israeli aggression against the territories of my country?" he asked. "Or should we attract the attention of the war makers in this council, by exercising our legitimate right to self defense and respond to the Israeli aggression against the Damascus International Civil Airport by launching an aggression against Tel Aviv airport."

Ja’afari complained of the repeated Israeli aerial attacks against his country. Israel has executed repeated air strikes in Syria to prevent Iranian military entrenchment in that country.

The UNSC’s failure to act against Israel and the support it receives from permanent members of the UNSC has encouraged such "aggressions," Ja’afari added. "These acts were not condemned. There were no calls to halt such acts by this UNSC, in light of the position of the US, Britain and France, who are partners and supporters of Israel in such aggression.

Ask Pasadena's Lucille Brown, about to turn 107, about music, poodles and life
[Houston Chronicle] As she prepares for her 107th birthday, Pasadena resident Lucille Brown gives advice for a good life. "Go to church. Be close to God. Don’t drink. Don’t smoke. Those things will kill you," she said.

At almost 107 years old, Pasadena resident Lucille Brown doesn’t think of major historical events such as the Great Depression when citing what has had the most impact on her life.

"Meeting my husband," answers Brown, whose birthday will be Jan. 28. "I had just graduated beauty school. I knew my husband’s nephew, who was actually older than my husband, and he introduced me and him. I fell for him right then and there."

"I lived with him all these years. All these years until he passed away when he was 66," she said of her late husband, Clem, who was a carpenter and supervised carpenters. "We had been married for almost 40 years."

For years, Lucille Brown, a Louisiana native, taught piano lessons. "Oh. And I also taught accordion," she said.

"I taught piano up until here just a few years ago. But the kids stopped practicing; so I told their parents, ’You’re just wasting your money. I can teach them all I know, but if they won’t practice at home, you’re just wasting your money.’ So, I stopped teaching them. Why would you even take lessons if you aren’t going to practice?

US intelligence warns of ‘ever more diverse' threats
WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ Russia’s efforts to expand its influence and China’s modernizing military are among the "ever more diverse" threats facing the U.S., according to a major intelligence report released Tuesday.

The National Intelligence Strategy report, issued every four years, also singles out such potential threats as North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, the growing cyber capabilities of U.S. adversaries and global political instability.

The report, which sets out the priorities for the various agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, notes that the United States "faces an increasingly complex and uncertain world in which threats are becoming ever more diverse and interconnected."

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said in a letter accompanying the report that the U.S. agencies must adapt to respond to what he calls a "turbulent and complex" environment.

"We face significant changes in the domestic and global environment," Coats said. "We must be ready to meet the 21st century challenges and to recognize emerging threats and opportunities."

He said the intelligence community must improve cooperation among member agencies and foster more innovation. He also said agencies must do more to increase transparency to raise public trust in their work.

U.S. airlines tap army helicopter pilots to ease shortage
CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. Army pilot Shaun Perez spent ten hours flying an Apache helicopter over Afghanistan, providing gun cover for Special Forces soldiers on the ground as they hunted for high-value targets, guns and weapons.

Returning to his base at dawn, he donned a fresh uniform before shutting himself into a small room to secure the next stage of his career - as a commercial airline pilot.

He would win the job in a video interview that day in August 2017, joining hundreds of other U.S. military helicopter pilots who have taken attractive offers from domestic airlines trying ease a global pilot shortage.

Perez took advantage of one of the tightest labor markets in the United States, created by years of slow hiring, a wave of pending retirements at major U.S. airlines, and Federal Aviation Administration rules that in 2013 increased the number of required training hours from 250 to 1,500.

The industry’s aggressive recruitment of military helicopter pilots is one of the most striking examples yet of the contortions required to quickly train new commercial aviators since the FAA increased the minimum flying requirement. The pilot shortage threatens the industry’s growth just as travel demand booms.

Europe
France, Germany try to 'show the way forward' for embattled EU project
AACHEN, Germany (Reuters) - The leaders of France and Germany signed a new treaty on Tuesday to update their 1963 post-war reconciliation accord, aiming to reinvigorate the European Union’s main axis as growing euroskeptic nationalism tests the bloc’s cohesion.

At a ceremony in the German border city of Aachen, an historic symbol of European concord, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron sought to show they can provide fresh leadership for the troubled EU project.

But some analysts doubt that France and Germany can still lead an EU that has grown to 28 members with diverse and often conflicting interests and priorities.

'I do not want to die': Central American exodus grows
[Aljazeera] Thousands of Hondurans wait on Mexico's border, hoping to find respite from poverty and political violence.

Guatemala City and Tecun Uman - Noemi Banegas and her family spent the night on the border bridge that served as a pathway between Guatemala and Mexico.

After a 1,200km journey from their home in southern Honduras, they were among the hundreds of Central Americans waiting their turn to enter Mexican immigration. "This is the first time we are making this journey," Banegas told Al Jazeera on the pavement of the Mexican end of the bridge spanning the Suchiate River.

Banegas, her husband and their two children, aged three and seven, fled Honduras last Monday with hundreds of other Honduran migrants and refugees.

Iranian Air Force Ready To 'Eliminate Israel' Commander Says, As Tensions Rise Over Syria Airstrikes
[Newsweek] The head of Iran’s air force has said the Islamic Republic’s pilots are eager to fight with Israel and will "eliminate it from the earth" in the wake of fresh Israeli strikes inside Syria and amid escalating tensions between the two regional rivals.

Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh said Monday that Iran and its air force were ready for a confrontation with Israel. "The young people in the air force are fully ready and impatient to confront the Zionist regime and eliminate it from the Earth," he said according to Reuters which quoted a state-linked news website.

Nasirzadeh’s warnings follow airstrikes by Israel against targets near Damascus in a massive overnight bombardment. According to the Times of Israel the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have said the strikes against an Iranian weapons depot, intelligence facility and a training camp were of a retaliatory nature, a response to what Israel alleges was an Iranian missile attack targeting a ski resort in Hermon, Sunday.

Throughout the war in neighboring Syria, Israel has regularly intervened to prevent Tehran’s expansion in the beleaguered country. Israel has said Iran has sought to gain a foothold in Syria through the international arm of its Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the al-Quds brigade, as well as through its Lebanese proxy force Hezbollah. Both back the government of Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

UNFIL Denied Access To Hez Attack Tunnel Against Israel In Lebanon
[Jerusalem Post] The United Nations observer force was denied access to inspect the entry point of a Hezbollah tunnel that stretched into Israel, the UN’s Special Coordinator to the Middle East Peace Process told the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday.

"To date, UNIFIL has not been granted access to the confirmed entry points of a tunnel near Kfar Kila on the Lebanese side," he said.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon is tasked with monitoring the Israeli-Lebanese border to ensure that there are no violations of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that set out the terms of the cease fire which ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

The UNSC meeting monthly meeting on the Middle East took place after Israel had wrapped up a military operation on its side of the Lebanese border to destroy six Hezbollah attack tunnels.

Want to Heal the Internet? Ban All Collection of User Data
[Twominds.com] The social media/search giants have mastered the dark arts of obfuscating how they're reaping billions of dollars in profits from monetizing user data, and lobbying technologically naive politicos to leave their vast skimming operations untouched.

I've been commenting on the cancerous disease that's taken control of the Internet-- what Shoshana Zuboff calls Surveillance Capitalism--for many years. Here is a selection of my commentaries:

If you've followed any of my analyses, it will come as no surprise that I've concluded the only way to restore the health of the Internet is to ban all collection of user data. That's right, a 100% total ban on collecting any user data whatsoever.

We need to distinguish between customer/supplier data and user data. If a social media or other corporation wants to collect data from people who pay it money for services rendered, or from suppliers that it pays for services, then that process of data collection should be 100% transparent.
A customer pays for a service in cash; a user pays nothing. A company might want to collect data from its paying customers in order to upsell them or serve them better, and corporations who produce goods and services might want to collect data from the suppliers they pay.

Banning the collection of any data from users would of course destroy much of the revenues of companies such as Facebook, Google , Twitter, Instagram et al. It would also destroy the perverse incentives these corporations have institutionalized and excused as "garsh, you can't stop the advance of technology," as if their pursuit of Surveillance Capitalism were somehow an inevitable outcome of the Internet rather than a malign disease that's undermining democracy and the free flow of diverse opinions and dissent that is the foundation of functional democracy.

By banning the collection of any and all user data, the social media/search giants would become quasi-public utilities, providing whatever service they offer for free and collecting revenues from other businesses for services such as display advertising--advertising which cannot be targeted at specific groups of users because there is no data on users to exploit.

If you think this is unrealistic, look at craigslist. Craigslist is free to individual users, and it doesn't collect and sell user data to make billions of dollars. It sells adverts to businesses such as auto dealers and companies placing employment ads. These income streams are more than enough to fund the operational expenses and reap the owners a substantial profit.

Surveillance Capitalism is all about creating the illusion of privacy controls. The social media/search giants have mastered the dark arts of obfuscating how they're reaping billions of dollars in profits from monetizing user data, and lobbying technologically naive politicos to leave their vast skimming operations untouched.

Keep it simple: ban all collection of user data--no exceptions. That will be easy to enforce and easy for all participants to understand.

Former Democrat: The Truth is Democrats Won't Build Wall Because They're Under Influence of Mexican Mafia
[Gateway Pundit] A former Democrat and current Trump supporter unloaded on Democrats. Jeffrey Peterson says the reason the Democrats will never support the border wall ‐ the reason is that they are being paid off by the Mexican cartels.

Jeffrey Peterson states in his profile on Twitter that he is a former Democrat who ’walked away’. He now is a Trump supporter! He claims that the Democrats will never give in on a wall due to the Democrats being funded by the Mexican mafia. He says he has connections with Arizona politics and says Mexico is the main reason the wall is not supported by the Democrat Party!

-Lurid Crime Tales-
FBI's Former Top Lawyer Acknowledges ‘Unusual' Steps In Early Days Of Russia Probe
[Daily Caller] James Baker, the FBI’s former top lawyer, told Congress in 2018 about a series of "unusual" and "abnormal" steps he took in the early days of the bureau’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

Baker told lawmakers during testimony Oct. 4 and Oct. 18, 2018, that even though he rarely handled applications for surveillance warrants against American citizens, he reviewed one the FBI was seeking against Carter Page, the former Trump campaign adviser.

Baker, who resigned from the FBI in May 2018, also said he had a meeting Sept. 19, 2016, with a lawyer working for the DNC. The meeting was unprecedented for Baker, who told lawmakers he could not recall ever having met with an outside counsel during his FBI tenure.

That same attorney, Michael Sussmann, worked for the law firm that hired Fusion GPS, the company behind the Steele dossier. Sussmann was also peddling information related to the Trump-Russia investigation to media outlets during the same time period he was meeting with Baker.

Baker disclosed those details in testimony before a task force comprised of members of the House Judiciary and House Oversight Committees. Republicans on the task force have investigated the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe, as well as its claims to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to obtain warrants against Page.

Baker defended the FBI’s handling of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant applications. He did not acknowledge his activities in the beginning stages of the FBI probe were improper or unethical.

Baker told lawmakers he normally did not handle FBI applications for surveillance warrants against American citizens, but made an exception for an application to spy on Page because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Baker said he wanted to review the initial FISA application relatively early in the process, before it reached the desk of then-FBI Director James Comey.

Homeschooling Produces Better-Educated, More-Tolerant Kids. Politicians Hate That
[Reason] There's no better sign of success than an escalation in attacks by your enemies. Based on such evidence, homeschooling is enjoying a boom, as growing numbers of families with diverse backgrounds, philosophies, and approaches abandon government-controlled schools in favor of taking responsibility for their own children's education. As they do so, they're coming under assault from officials panicking over the number of people slipping from their grasp.

There's little doubt that homeschooling is an increasingly popular option. "From 1999 to 2012, the percentage of students who were homeschooled doubled, from an estimated 1.7 percent to 3.4 percent," reports the National Center for Education Statistics. While the government agency suggests that growth has leveled off since then, other researchers say data is hard to come by, since many states simply don't count people who homeschool.

"While the overall school-age population in the United States grew by about 2.0 percent from spring 2012 to spring 2016, data from 16 states from all four major regions of the nation showed that homeschooling grew by an average of about 25 percent in those states," counters the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), in response to NCES figures. "If the data from these states are representative of what happened in the other states during those four years, then homeschooling is continuing to grow in both absolute numbers and as a portion of the overall school-age population."

Just shy of eight percent of North Carolina students are homeschooled for example, in a state in which traditional public schools are bleeding students year after year to charter schools, private schools, and homeschooling.

They started to fear schools that were indoctrinating their kids to PC, cockamamie theories, social engineering, screwed-up accounts of history and a lack of freedom of religion. Kamala Harris Stacks Presidential Campaign With Hillary Clinton Alums
[Freebeacon] The newly launched Kamala Harris presidential campaign is stacked with top officials from Hillary Clinton's failed 2016 campaign, including her lawyer Marc Elias.

The abundance of Clinton staffers joining Harris is unsurprising, as many went straight from the 2016 trail to work in her new senate office in 2017. Those moves were considered a signal to insiders that a presidential campaign may be in the works.

The Harris campaign announced on Monday that Elias, Clinton's top lawyer, will be its general counsel; Lily Adams, Clinton's Iowa communications director and daughter of former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, will be its national communications director; Angelique Cannon, Clinton's deputy national finance director and national finance director for Senate Majority PAC, will be its national finance director; and David Huynh, Clinton's director of delegate operations and ballot access, will be its senior adviser.

Elias was most recently in the spotlight a few months ago as the top lawyer for former Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson during the Florida recount, which ended with Republican Sen. Rick Scott holding on to his victory.

Neither Elias nor the Harris campaign responded to inquiries on whether Elias has agreed to exclusively provide legal services to her campaign, or whether he would be able to work with her potential opponents in the primary.

Europe
German prosecutors press terror charges against Syrian man
[IsraelTimes] German prosecutors say they’ve pressed charges against a 29-year-old Syrian man who allegedly was a member of a foreign terror group and violated the war weapons control law.

The man, whose name is not given, allegedly joined the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
hard boy group in Syria from 2013 to 2014.

Frankfurt prosecutors say today he allegedly volunteered as a fighter and donated 50,000 Syrian lira, then worth about 250 euros ($284), to the group.

He was also in possession of a Kalashnikov and posed for photos for recruiting purposes showing him on pickup trucks using an anti-aircraft gun and a machine cannon.

The man was detained last February when he entered Germany for the second time. He first came to Germany as an asylum-seeker in 2015 but left again in 2017.

#5  Where do you go when you've gone to far?

Maduro has a problem. The economy is totally messed up. There is no nice path to staying in power, not one that doesn't involve calling out the army and killing a bunch of Venezuelans. Don't want that on the international news!

He likely has enough stolen boodle stashed away in offshore banks to live out his days comfortably but he can't just ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after lounging around the pool at the Motel 6 in Abu Dabu, not without worrying about being hunted down by a whole range of vengeance-seekers ranging from the International Criminal Court and crazies from the opposition parties to angry citizens looking for revenge. Can't go. Can't stay. What to do?

If only there was some sort of dictator theme park, like Dictator World at Disneyland or one of those African game parks, where he could live out his days protected from the outside world behind bullet-proof plexiglass while people gawked and jeered. I think it would be a great tourist attraction and facilitates the problem of regime change in what our glorious President referred to as sh1thole countries. It's a win-win!

POS John Kerry Tells Davos Crowd Trump Should Resign
[Free Beacon] Former Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the only solution to President Donald Trump’s failures of leadership would be for him to resign.

CNBC's Tania Bryer interviewed Kerry, also a former senator from Massachusetts, for a CNBC-sponsored panel called "The Future of Our Oceans." Kerry focused on climate change in a highlight video from the panel posted by CNBC, in which he blasted Trump for pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement he helped negotiate during the Obama administration.

When he was pressed on what advice he would give Trump, Kerry questioned the premise that Trump would ever listen to him.

"I can’t play that," Kerry said, stuttering. "He doesn't take any of this seriously, he doesn’t have an ability to have that kind of conversation."

"What would your message be?" Bryer asked.

"Resign," he replied after stammering for a moment. The audience applauded loudly.

Beforehand, Kerry argued that the meaninglessness of the climate accords was what made Trump foolish to pull out. Kerry explained the agreement did not impose any actual burden on the United States, and therefore Trump could have stayed in without any trouble. However, Kerry also agreed that the future of the world was hanging in the balance.

"When the president says it puts a burden on us‐no. We are assuming a de minimis level of what we ought to be doing, and the burden that is being put on the people of the world as well as the United States is the burden of ignorance to science," he said.

Jihadists suffer heavy casualties in failed attack against Syrian Army
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) thwarted a big attack by the jihadist rebels in the southern countryside of the Idlib province on Tuesday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced.

According to the Russian Ministry’s statement, the Syrian Arab Army was able to kill a large number of fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
(a reference to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
) after they attempted to bypass the government defenses.

"Jabhat al-Nusra gangs have simultaneously attacked positions of government troops near Abu-Duhur and Abu-Sharjah settlements," the Reconciliation Center’s head Lt. Gen. Sergei Solomatin said.

Solomatin added that the murderous Moslems had "penetrated the Syrian army’s defense at a depth of up to 1.5 kilometers [0.9 miles] but were then stopped by the fire [of the Syrian army] and pushed back beyond the contact line."

"The krazed killer attack near the Abu-Sharjah settlement was thwarted by the fire of the units of the Syrian Armed Forces. Having suffered losses, murderous Moslems withdrew to their original positions," Solomatin said.

[KhaamaPress] Three terrorist networks have been busted during the operations of the Afghan Intelligence (National Directorate of Security

The provincial government media office in a statement said the terrorist networks were busted during the operations which were conducted over the past one week.

The statement further added that the terrorist networks comprised of 30 Death Eaters who were all locked away

by the intelligence operatives.

The detained Death Eaters were involved in major destructive activities including kabooms, suicide kabooms, and armed attacks, the provincial government added in its statement.

According to the governor’s office, the Death Eaters were conducting attacks in Kandahar city and other districts of Kandahar province, mainly targeting security compounds, security check posts, and logistics convoys.

This comes as the anti-government armed elements have been attempting to destabilize Kandahar province where the security situation had improved comparatively during the recent years.

The Sarzer border crossing near Duhok’s Amedi town was opened four years ago. It is typically open 8 am to 5 pm and sees as many as 750 people passing through daily.

The PKK has its headquarters in the Kurdistan Region’s Qandil mountain area. Turkey regularly conducts cross-border operations against alleged PKK positions, launching Arclight airstrikes and occasionally ground incursions.

Efforts are underway to reopen the crossing.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Geologist – “The sun, not CO2, drives Earth’s climate”
[IceAgeNow] Devastating news for human-caused global warming proponents.

"The sun, not CO2, drives Earth’s climate," says Dr Roger Higgs, long-time consultant geologist and sedimentologist.

Higgs bases his statement on four vital points:

  • Global warming and cooling are driven by the sun, specifically by the solar-sourced Interplanetary Magnetic Field, which regulates incoming cosmic rays, which in turn govern cloudiness and thus global temperature (the breathtakingly elegant Svensmark Theory).

  • Global temperature oscillations lag 25 years behind the causative solar magnetic fluctuations. This 25-year lag is due to ocean thermal inertia in remarkable agreement with the 15-20-year time lag estimated by Abdussamatov et al. 2012).

  • The idea that CO2 is the main climate driver, despite its scarcity in Earth’s atmosphere, ie 400 parts per million, near plant-starvation level, contrasts starkly with CO2’s 1,000 to 4,000 ppm levels for most of the last 600 million years.

  • Earth is now cooling. Global warming ended in 2016: proof that the sun, not CO2, drives Earth’s climate. Moreover, from AD500 to 1200, CO2 levels were anti-correlated with Earth’s temperature.

"The reality is that man’s industrialization just happened to occur in a period of solar-driven warming, a mere coincidence, causing governments to needlessly spend trillions of taxpayer dollars on CO2-reduction efforts," says Dr Higgs.

See entire paper, with several graphs:
Global Warming Ended In 2016: Proof that the sun, not CO2 drives Earth’s climate

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinians to Refuse Remaining U.S. Aid for Fear of Lawsuits
[AnNahar] The Paleostinian government will refuse all U.S. government aid for fear of lawsuits, officials said Tuesday, throwing the future of security coordination and projects already under way into doubt.
Yet another Paleostinian foot shot. No skin off our fore if they don't want our filthy lucre.
Senior official Saeb Erekat
...negotiated the Oslo Accords with Israel. He has been chief Paleostinian negotiator since 1995. He is currently negotiating with Israel to establish a de jure Paleostinian state...
confirmed U.S. media reports that the Paleostinians had demanded all funding stop at the end of the January for fear they would expose themselves to costly law suits under the U.S. Anti Terrorism Clarification Act (ATCA) which is about to come into force.

"The government sent an official letter to the U.S. administration requesting it stop all aid to the Paleostinian Authority, including assistance to the Paleostinian security services," Erekat told AFP.

He said the main reason for the move was the ATCA legislation, under which the financial aid provided by the U.S. could be used as a means "for various groups to file lawsuits against the Paleostinian Authority."

U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
had already pledged to cut almost all humanitarian aid to the Paleostinians amid a dispute with President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, but projects were being phased out gradually.

The planned expansion of a school near Bethlehem will now not be completed, while infrastructure projects in Jericho and other towns will also stop.

The U.S. also provides roughly $50 million in annual support for Paleostinian security services, including to support security coordination with Israel that Israeli officials say is crucial for maintaining calm in the West Bank.

This funding was not cut off by the U.S. government despite humanitarian aid cuts but will now be stopped.

The ATCA legislation passed by Congress last year provides for any government that receives funding to be subject to U.S. counterterrorism laws.

The Paleostinian Authority faces potential lawsuits from families of American victims of past Paleostinian attacks.

The U.S. consulate in Jerusalem confirmed Tuesday it was "working through" the potential impact of ATCA and had "taken steps to wind down certain projects and programs in the West Bank and Gazoo."

Erekat played down the ending of U.S. funding saying it would "not impact on the role of the security services."

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
a senior Paleostinian security official told AFP the impact could be significant.

The search is on for new sources of funding in Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and elsewhere, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
A handful of U.S. contractors working to support the security services have already left the Paleostinian territories ahead of the end of the month, he added.

IDF officer hurt by gunfire, Hamas fighter killed as Gaza border heats up
[IsraelTimes] Soldier lightly injured when sniper fire hits his helmet; Israeli tank destroys Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, post, reportedly killing 1 and injuring 2 in response.

An Israeli soldier was injured and a fighter with the Hamas terror group killed Tuesday in an exchange of fire along the Gazoo border, as the restive frontier saw a resurgence of violence.

A Paleostinian sniper shot up a group of IDF soldiers during a riot along the Gazoo border, hitting the helmet of an officer and lightly injuring him, in the second shooting attack of the day, the army said.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces targeted an observation post belonging to the Hamas terror group in eastern Gazoo, near the el-Bureij refugee camp, the army said.

According to Hamas, one of its fighters was killed in the strike on the terror group’s position and two others were maimed, one of them seriously.

The riot occurred in southern Gazoo, across from the Israeli community of Kibbutz Kissufim. The military said rioters threw rocks at IDF soldiers on the other side of the security fence.

During the festivities, a sniper shot up the troops, according to the IDF.

"A bullet struck the helmet of an IDF officer who was stationed at the scene," the army said.

The officer was taken to Beerhsheba’s Soroka Medical Center for treatment, the hospital said.

Initially, the IDF said it was not clear if the officer had been injured by gunfire or by a rocks, but later determined that he had indeed been struck by a sniper’s bullet.

In addition, five Paleostinians also approached the border during the riot. Two of them breached the security fence and entered Israeli territory before quickly running back into the Strip.

The IDF retaliated to the riot by targeting the Hamas post near the border.

The Hamas member who was killed was identified as 24-year-old Mahmoud Abed al-Nabahin by the Gazoo health ministry. On its website, Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades wrote al-Nabahin was a "fighter" who was "martyred" in the Israeli attack on its observation post.

Earlier in the day, shots were fired at Israeli troops on the border of the northern Gazoo Strip, similarly prompting the Israeli military to destroy a nearby Hamas post, the army said.

No troops were harmed in the shooting attack.

The Israeli military did not indicate who it believed fired the shots. The Hamas post in northern Gazoo was targeted because, as a rule, the IDF holds the terror group responsible for all violence emanating from the Gazoo Strip, after it seized control of the enclave in 2007 by ousting the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority.

prepares to transfer $15 million in payouts to Hamas civil servants in the Gazoo Strip, the third such installment for the terror group to be approved by the Israeli government. The funds were expected to be transferred later this week, after they were initially stalled by Israel in response to a flareup in cross-border violence, a Qatari diplomat said on Sunday.

Qatar’s envoy to the Hamas-ruled Gazoo Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, told Rooters the latest cash transfer was due to reach the Paleostinian territory by Wednesday.

After border violence, Netanyahu stops Qatari cash transfer to Gaza

[IsraelTimes] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won’t allow the next installment of $15 million of Qatari funds into the Gaza Strip, according to a source familiar with the decision.

“In the wake of the recent events in the Gaza Strip and after consultations with the security services, Prime Minister Netanyahu decided not to allow the transfer tomorrow of the Qatari funds to the Gaza Strip,” the source says.

The infusion of cash into the Gaza Strip is meant to stabilize Hamas’s rule over the territory and prevent the deterioration of the humanitarian situation there.

Explosions heard in Gaza, IDF closes border area to civilians

[IsraelTimes] According to unconfirmed reports on social media, explosions are being heard in the northern Gaza Strip in a suspected Israeli air force attack.

Hebrew media report the IDF has shuttered areas near the border to civilian traffic.

Drunk tries to divert Russian plane, forcing emergency landing
[DAWN] A drunk passenger on a Russian domestic flight demanded the plane change course, reportedly to fly to Afghanistan, forcing an emergency landing in Siberia on Tuesday.

The Aeroflot plane, travelling from Surgut in western Siberia to Moscow, landed in the nearby city Khanty-Mansiysk instead.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the man ‐ who was not identified ‐ was "in a state of inebriation".

He was detained after the aircraft landed in Khanty-Mansiysk, some 2,600 kilometres (1,600 miles) east of Moscow.

A criminal probe was opened into the incident, Sherlocks said.

"Threatening that he had a weapon, he tried to break into the cockpit during the flight and demanded to change the course of the aircraft," Sherlocks said in a statement.

Confirmed by WAPO- Native American Nathan Phillips Never Served in Vietnam
[IOTWReport] An overlooked correction to a story published at WAPO-

Correction: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips said he served in the U.S. Marines but was never deployed to Vietnam.
There is a difference between "I was in Vietnam." and "I was in during Vietnam." For additional clarification, let's see his DD-214, eh?!
Several veterans groups have reportedly filed Freedom Of Information Act requests with the Department of Defence for exactly that information.

#10  So now, after they blew an insignificant incident totally out of proportion and disrupted the lives of everyone associated with Covington High School, WAPO publishes a correction? The damage is done, innocent lives have been put at risk because Jeff Bezos hates Donald Trump. It's too late for a correction. They committed libel for partisan purposes and they need to be sued for all they're worth.

The most troubling aspect of this story, aside from the death threats to innocent kids, is that WAPO and the rest of the mainstream media made no attempt to verify or corroborate anything that Nathan Phillips told them. They presented it without question to the American people as the Gospel truth. Other outlets across the country eagerly ran the story without question.

Nor did they make any attempt to get the students' side of the story. That's Journalism 101, folks, and there's no excuse for not doing it.

This is slanted, one sided, chickenshit, biased, bigoted, dishonest and hateful fake news at its worst. They know better. They can try to characterize it as a mistake, or just sloppy journalism, but they know better. They lied, deliberately and with malicious intent.

I happened to be in the room yesterday when Mrs. Uluque had ABC's The View on television. (Trust me, I do not make a habit of this.) I was astounded when Whoopi Goldberg began the show by admitting that the media made a snap judgment about the students before gathering all the facts.

"Why do we keep making the same mistakes?" she asked.

To which her cohort Joy Behar replied, "Because we're desperate to get Trump out of office."

Behar smiled as she said this and exhibited no shame or remorse, as if her hatred for Trump is a valid excuse for outright lies. She didn't care at all if those students are getting death threats or if their school had to be closed because they're afraid it might be bombed or shot up.

So the mask slipped. It isn't just Behar, it's all of her colleagues in America's mainstream media. They were all complicit. They were all willing to sacrifice their integrity for the higher cause of their hatred for Trump.

I have learned that these so-called news organizations are unreliable, more like propagandists for the Democrat Party and the Deep State. But it's truly frightening that millions of people across the country still believe them. First I get scared and then I get seriously pissed off.

#12  Not Elder: another old person, but Elder: as in respected village elder.
There is a lot of context here most won't know. Natives can't be Elders until they pass 55 years of age, it's the custom. I always though that seemed a bit too young until I started tracking the die off of the natives doing my family history research - a great many don't survive to age 65, due to alcohol, accidents or disease. The convention is to call any native who looks old enough an Elder, even if they are just old enough and lack any other distinction. What little I was able to find about Nathan Phillips the day the incident news broke showed that he liked to get his face in the news, that he had some good PR people supporting him, and that his story / demeanor / language was very, very fishy. No one has yet disclosed whether or not he is enrolled in any federally recognized tribe. I know I am. I have a plastic ID card with its barcode to back up what I say.

LHC summons Punjab police chief over fake encounter in Sahiwal
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court on Tuesday summoned Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Amjad Javed Saleemi to court while taking up a petition demanding an impartial inquiry into the Sahiwal killings through a judicial commission.

The elite Punjab police had in a fake encounter on Saturday killed four people, including parents Khalil and Nabeela, their teenage daughter, and neighbour Zeeshan, sending shock waves across the country as one of the couple's three surviving children who were witness to the episode denied the official version in a video that went viral on social media.

The Punjab government maintained that Zeeshan had links to ISIS and was "working with terrorists", and that the slain family members were all "collateral damage". Following the incident, a joint investigation team (JIT) was formed to probe the matter, and a first information report was registered against the CTD officials involved in the operation, who were taken into custody on the chief minister's orders.

Lawyer Mian Asif Mahmood had on Monday petitioned the LHC arguing that the JIT formed by the provincial government would not be able to find out the truth and hold the responsible police personnel accountable for their crime.

The petitioner contended that the incident was "a matter of people's lives and the high court holds the authority to investigate". It argued that the government should have created a commission to inquire into the counter, rather "it formed a JIT and did away with its responsibility".

The government does not want a transparent inquiry into the Sahiwal incident, the petitioner claimed, calling for the formation of a judicial commission headed by a sitting judge to look into the matter and accord punishment to those responsible for the deaths.

He pointed out that the statistics of Punjab police revealed that it conducted 247 encounters in 2017, 91 in 2018 and about seven were reported during the first month of 2019.

province, leaving at least two hard boyz dead.

The 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan Military in the East in a statement said the Talibs launched an attack on an army outpost in Kashmand Village in Qarghayi district late on Monday night.

The statement further added that the armed forces effectively responded to the attack leaving two hard boyz dead.

The dead bodies of the two hard boyz were left the area along with an Ak-47 assault rifle, the 201st Silab Corps said, adding that the security forces have not suffer any casualty in the attack.

Army Says Israeli 'Agent' Arrested over Anti-Hamas Attack
[AnNahar] Leb’s army said Tuesday it has tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
a suspected agent of Israel’s spy agency Mossad over a failed bid to assassinate a Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, official in the south of the country.

In January 2018, Mohammed Hamdan, a security official with the Lebanese branch of the Paleostinian Islamist terror movement Hamas, was maimed in the leg in a boom-mobile blast in the southern Lebanese port city of Sidon.

Leb and Hamas blamed Israel for the attack, and days after the January 14 blast Beirut authorities said they had arrested a man suspected of involvement in the boom-mobileing.

A statement at the time said he was "one of the main perpetrators of the crime, who confessed to being tasked by Israeli intelligence."

On Tuesday the Lebanese army said in a statement a second male suspect "who carried out surveillance" before last year’s bombing had also been arrested.

The second suspect "has admitted to being a Mossad agent since 2014," it said, without specifying his nationality.

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel in the past decade and is based in Gazoo, but it operates a branch in Leb and elsewhere in the region.

Leb is also home to tens of thousands of Paleostinian refugees, many of whom live 12 camps across the country, the largest being Ain al-Hilweh near the port city of Sidon.

59 terrorists killed by Egyptian forces in recent operations: Army
[AlAhram] Egyptian troops and security forces have killed 59 gunnies in recent operations, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

In various raids in Sinai and the Suez Canal cities, army forces killed 44 gunnies who were found in possession of rifles and bombs, the statement said. Police forces killed another 15 "extremely dangerous takfiri

s" in a separate "pre-emptive" operation, it added, without saying where the operation took place.

The statement said the bad boyz were potted over the "past period," without giving a specific timeframe. One officer and six soldiers were killed during festivities with terrorists, it added.

The statement added that 142 suspects have been locked away
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
Air forces destroyed 56 vehicles used by the gunnies in the Western Desert, northeastern and southern border areas.

Security forces discovered and destroyed 242 bombs planted to target forces, as well as a number of hideouts where weapons and ammunition were found in central and northern Sinai.

The statement added that border guards have arrested 2,189 people of different nationalities trying to cross the Egyptian borders and seized large amounts of illegal narcotics.

Indian police investigate suspected people smuggling to New Zealand
[DAWN] Police in southern India are investigating a suspected attempt to illegally transport scores of Indians on an overcrowded boat to New Zealand.

The additional superintendent of police in Kerala state said police were questioning people who failed to board the fishing boat, who said it left nine days ago for New Zealand.

Sojan, who uses one name, said police began investigating when they found dozens of abandoned bags containing dried fruit and "everything needed for a sea journey" near the harbour in Kochi in Kerala state.

"The boat is gone, that's for sure," he said by telephone on Monday.

Police believe the fishing boat was so overcrowded that people had to leave their luggage behind. Sojan said it was unclear where the boat might be.

"We have not been able to trace the boat so far, no radio connection, no radar, nothing is coming out," Sojan said. "It was a fishing boat, not a passenger boat. The boat had been purchased just for this purpose."

Footage shows drug bust as dozens of smugglers meet at Israel-Egypt border
[IsraelTimes] Police ambush Bedouin traffickers as they receive 100kg of drugs from Egyptian narcos at security fence, firefight ensues.

Rare police footage broadcast by Channel 13 news this week shows an attempt to smuggle around 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of drugs into Israel across the Egyptian border.
A grainy photo, but no video, can be seen at the link.
The footage, captured in January 2018, depicts several dozen smugglers congregating near the border fence while unbeknownst to them, an Israel Border Police force lies in ambush nearby.

The Egyptian smugglers place ladders along the six-meter high fence and begin throwing drug packages into the hands of the Israeli Bedouin smugglers waiting on the other side.

At that point, heavy fire is directed at the smugglers from the Egyptian side, possibly by Egyptian security forces. Israeli coppers then emerge from their hiding and also begin firing. One Egyptian smuggler can be seen falling from a ladder after being shot.

The Israeli Bedouin smugglers load the drugs onto their vehicles and flee, with authorities giving chase.

The smugglers were eventually caught and incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!

Car Bomb Hits Syria Regime Stronghold Latakia
[AnNahar] A boom-mobile went kaboom! Tuesday in the Syrian regime's coastal stronghold of Latakia, killing one person and wounding four others, state news agency SANA reported.

"Initial reports indicate that a boom-mobile went kaboom! and that the driver was killed while four other people were maimed," SANA said, adding that the kaboom occurred in the city's al-Hammam square.

Authorities found a second bomb in the same place and defused it just before it was due to blow up, the agency added.

It published video footage showing a burnt-out car surrounded by firefighters and soldiers.

Latakia is a bastion of the family of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
The city, the capital of Latakia province located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, has largely escaped the violence that has devastated other regions of Syria since the conflict began in 2011.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, Tuesday's blast was caused by an bomb hidden inside the car or near it.

Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that the driver killed in the blast was not a suicide kaboomer.

In September 2015 a boom-mobile had went kaboom! in the same square, killing dozens of people.

The latest kaboom comes days after a blast -- the first in more than a year -- hit the Syrian capital Damascus which has also been largely insulated from the war.

According to SANA the kaboom hit southern Damascus without causing any victims, but the Observatory reported it left a number of people dead and maimed.

Two policemen held over injuring couple in crossfire
[DAWN] KARACHI: Two coppers were detained on Monday over charges of injuring a man and his pregnant wife by resorting to "uncalled for" firing on two suspects who snatched an official rifle from them in Korangi-5 area on Sunday night, officials said.

The passerby couple, Adnan Arfeen, 32, and his wife Saqiba Khan, 28, were shot at and maimed when the police resorted to firing at the fleeing armed pillion riders.

The police said two coppers riding a cycle of violence tried to stop two suspects also riding a cycle of violence at Korangi-5 near the model park. The suspects stopped and snatched the official rifle from one of the coppers and fled.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
another armed policeman shot up the fleeing suspects.

As a result, the passerby couple sustained bullet injuries, said DIG East Amir Farooqi.

The senior officer admitted that the couple was hurt by the firing conducted by the policeman.

Investigators collected two spent bullet casings fired from the official rifle (SMG) while there was no evidence that the fleeing suspects also resorted to firing, revealed the officer.

The suspects abandoned the rifle at a short distance and fled.

"The suspected dacoits took away the SMG of one of the coppers, but to resort to firing while chasing in such a situation was uncalled for, which proved fatal," opined DIG East Amir Farooqi.

Five terrorists killed by Egyptian police in Qalioubiya shootout: Ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed five murderous Moslems affiliated with the banned Moslem Brüderbund group during a raid in Qalioubiya, north of Cairo, a statement by the interior ministry said on Tuesday.
The bad boyz were potted in a shootout as security forces attempted to raid a deserted factory in the governorate’s Obour City, which the murderous Moslems were using as a hideout and to manufacture explosives.

Weapons, including improvised bombs and other kabooms, were found at the scene by police.

The raid came after monitoring operations by the ministry’s national security department, which said that the murderous Moslems planned to execute a number of attacks against vital institutions and personnel from the police and Armed Forces.

Over the past months, Egyptian police have announced the "elimination" of dozens of murderous Moslems who were plotting to carry out attacks throughout the country.

Woman Famous for Climbing Mountains in Bikinis Found Dead and Frozen After 20 Meter Fall
Well, she should have seen this coming. A Taiwanese woman known as the "Bikini Climber" because she often climbed mountains in bikinis was found frozen and dead after a 20-meter-fall, according to reports.

Gigi Wu, 36, was renowned in the east for climbing mountains in a bikini and posting sexy photos from mountain peaks. But, apparently, she made one excursion too many.

Eight days into a 25-day solo hike on Saturday Wu reportedly called a friend to say she’d fell down a ravine in Central Taiwan’s Yushan Mountain. She also said she was trapped at the bottom of the ravine with a broken leg and could not get out, Taiwan News reported (via the New York Post).

Due to weather conditions, rescuers could not reach Wu for over a day.

Authorities said that the tempers [sic] had fallen to freezing overnight.

By the time Wu was fund she had already died from exposure.

According to the Post:

Wu, who also went by Wu Chi-yun, was a local social-media star who posed on some of Taiwan’s highest peaks in barely-there outfits.

In one image, she stands in a rainbow bikini and blue hat, with treacherous boulders in the background.

On Christmas Eve, she shared an image showing her scratched-up legs after being injured in a fall that she said she was lucky to survive.
Yeah, there's pix.

Caribbean-Latin America
Jorge Rodríguez warns that "violence will not be allowed in opposition march"
[ELUNIVERSAL] The sectoral vice president of communication and culture, Jorge Rodríguez, denounced the "training of terrorist cells, by factors of the right-wing Popular Will Party (VP), to generate violent scenarios in the mobilization" opposition called for this Wednesday 23 from January.

According to preliminary investigations, five or six weeks ago terrorist groups were captured in Caracas and transferred to the cities of San Cristóbal (Táchira) and Cúcuta (Colombia) to complete phases of training and "perpetrate acts of violence and establish false positives" .

In addition, he specified that in the training would be used the weapons of war stolen last Monday, by a group of assailants affiliated to the Command of Zone 43 of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), in the detachment of Urban Security, located in the parish Petare, Miranda state.

"The weapons were handed over to civilians, belonging to the terrorist cell, Voluntad Popular, for the perpetration of acts of violence, injuries and deaths in the opposition demonstration on January 23," he said from Miraflores, Caracas, reported AVN.

Rodriguez explained that of 51 weapons of war stolen by the "group of assailants", only 40 managed to be recovered, leaving only 11 "in the hands of terrorist factors."

According to the sectoral vice-president, the false positive was intended to standardize facsimile snuffies of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), achieving the objective of "firing against the opposition demonstration" and comply with the orders of the US vice president, Mike Pence.

6,000 Nigerians Flee Boko Haram Attack to Chad
[AnNahar] Thousands of Nigerians have fled across Lake Chad since Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
launched attacks in and around the fishing town of Baga last month, the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
refugee agency said on Tuesday.

"An estimated 6,000 refugees have fled Nigeria's restive Borno state since December 26, when festivities erupted between Nigerian forces and non-state gangs in Baga town, near the Chadian border," the UNHCR said in a statement.

"According to testimonies gathered by our teams, refugees are fleeing in fear of their lives after threats of retaliation and intimidation following bully boy attacks."

The attacks have been blamed on the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
West Africa Province faction of Boko Haram, which has repeatedly targeted the military in recent months.

Last week, the U.N. said there had since been a "massive displacement" of more than 30,000 people from Baga and the surrounding area to the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

That had increased pressure on already overstretched aid agencies providing humanitarian assistance in the city.

Another 9,000 Nigerians sought refuge in Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
following a separate attack against troops in Rann, but the authorities there refused to take them, the UNHCR said last week.

The attacks come as Nigeria prepares to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in less than a month. Violence and so many displaced people is expected to make voting problematic.

The conflict between Boko Haram and the Nigerian army has claimed more than 27,000 lives since 2009 and more than 1.7 million people are still unable to return to their homes.

Edward Kallon, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, has said the "increasingly frequent" attacks were "having a devastating impact on... civilians."

Home Front: Politix
Now Pelosi owns the shutdown.
Good read by Stephen Moore, formally of the WSJ.
[Townhall] On Saturday, Donald Trump shrewdly flipped the table on Nancy Pelosi in the government shutdown standoff. He has now proposed a grand bargain on immigration: legalization of some 1 million so-called Dreamers -- the foreigners who were brought into the U.S. illegally by their parents -- and an immediate end to the shutdown, if she agrees to expand funding to $5.7 billion for the wall.

It's the kind of checkmate political maneuver that may guarantee his re-election.

It's smart because it now puts the onus on Pelosi to open the government. It also puts the pressure on Pelosi to act on immigration reform. For 25 years, Democrats have preferred to politicize the immigration issue -- and treat Hispanic voters as political hostages -- rather than agree to a bipartisan solution to deal with the 10 million illegal immigrants residing in the U.S.

There's no good option for Pelosi now.

Jordan reopens main border post with Syria after 3 years
Normalcy officially returns.
[AlAhram] Jordan on Monday reopened its main border crossing with war-torn Syria, a key Middle East trade route, after a three year closure, an AFP photographer reported.

The black metal border gate was opened from the Jordanian side of the crossing at 8:00 am (0500 GMT) as more than a dozen police and customs officials stood nearby, the photographer said.

Several cars bearing Jordanian license plates queued to enter Syria, the photographer added, as travellers expressed their joy at being able to cross the border.

"Today is a celebration for us and I wanted to be among the first to cross the border," said Syrian businessman Mohammed Hisham as he waited for his turn to enter Syria from Jordan where he now lives.

Jordanian taxi driver Imad Sariheen called the reopening of Jaber a source of "great happiness for all of us" which will help ease "economic hardships" caused by the closure of the crossing.

"Our conditions have worsened over the past years. Our work (driving taxis) was halted because of the closure of the border between Jordan and Syria," he added.

The border crossing, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side and Nassib on the Syrian side, was a key trade route before Amman closed it after the post was overrun by rebels in April 2015.

The crossing was a major link not only for direct trade between the neighbouring countries but also for longer-distance transit, which was a significant source of revenue.

The reopening comes after Syrian government troops retook their side of the crossing in July under a deal with rebel fighters brokered by Moscow.

After seven years of civil war, Syria's government has recaptured large swathes of territory from rebels with backing from Russia, but it still only controls around half the 19 crossing points with neighbours Leb, Jordan, Iraq and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
Jordanian government spokeswoman Jumana Ghneimat announced the intended reopening of the Jaber crossing on Sunday.

She said in a statement that the decision was taken after "Jordanian and Syrian technical teams agreed on the final measures needed to reopen the border during a meeting held at the Jaber crossing".

Syria's Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar also confirmed on Sunday the decision to reopen Jaber.

According to an agreement between Jordan and Syria seen by AFP, the traffic of passenger and goods at the border crossing will resume daily from 0500 GMT to 1300 GMT.

Syria also requested that Jordan send an expert to help with border checks at Nassib where there are no X-ray machines, according to the terms of the agreement.

The accord stipulated that travellers entering Jordan from Syria "must obtain prior to their trip a security permit" from Jordanian authorities.

And those who plan to use Jordan as a transit stop en route to a third country must show proof of their residency permit in Syria as well as an entry visa to the country they plan to visit.

Nigerian Court Grants Jailed Shiite Leader Access to Doctors
[AnNahar] A Nigerian court has ordered the secret police to allow a detained pro-Iranian holy man to see his personal doctors as his health was worsening, his legal team said on Tuesday.

leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN),

Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
as part of a military crackdown on IMN supporters in the northern city of Zaria, in which troops killed more than 300 and buried them in mass graves.

"We applied to the court today (Tuesday) for an order directing the DSS to give access to his personal doctors to enable them to treat him in jug," Maxwell Kyon told AFP by telephone from court in the northern city of Kaduna.

"The court granted the order and directed that the DSS should allow his personal doctors access to him."

Kyon, who said Zakzaky was present at Tuesday's hearing, said the ruling was necessitated by his ailing health.

"My client is not given any special medical attention," he added.

"Every time you see him his health condition appears worse. It is only when he receives special medical care that his health condition will improve."

During the hearing, charges against two IMN supporters were struck out after the prosecution failed to produce them in court, he added. The case was adjourned to March 25.

Zakzaky's supporters have repeatedly protested in Abuja and several northern cities against the continued detention of their leader.

In October, the IMN and human rights

groups said more than 40 people were killed when the security forces opened fire on crowds on the outskirts of the capital.

The army maintained six people died and that soldiers acted in self-defense.

Zakzaky and the IMN have been at loggerheads with the government for years because of his call for an Iranian-style Islamic revolution in Nigeria.

Northern Nigeria is predominantly Sunni Moslem.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Why I'm (slightly) less pessimistic about global warming
More WaPo nonsense
Last week, a large group of economists, including 27 Nobel Prize winners, 15 former chairs of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and two former treasury secretaries-- Democrats and Republicans -- issued a manifesto endorsing what's been called a "carbon dividend" plan. This would be a good start.

Here's how it would work. The government would tax CO2 emissions. The idea is to prompt Americans to use less fossil fuels and to prod businesses to focus on renewables and energy efficiency. That's a standard carbon tax. What defines the "carbon dividend" plan is that all the money collected would be rebated to households.

Under one proposal, the government would slap a $43 tax on each ton of CO2. That would equal about 38 cents on a gallon of gasoline, says economist Marc Hafstead of Resources for the Future, who studied the plan. It would raise about $180 billion in the tax’s first year, he says. If the "dividend" -- the tax rebate -- were distributed evenly, that would be about $1,400 per household.

Meanwhile, if the tax were increased 3 percent annually, there would be (according to the estimates) a dramatic reduction in U.S. fossil fuel use and greenhouse gases. Without the tax, projected CO2 emissions would be 5.4 billion metric tons in 2035. With the tax, the total would be 3.6 billion metric tons, a 33 percent decline. Still, this would hardly eliminate greenhouse-gas emissions.
Replacing that fossil fuel with exactly, what? Not nuclear. Oh, you mean the little people should do without. How about higher food prices? Oh, the little people should just starve.

Yellow vests coming to an American town near you. Where is my pitchfork?
More jobs for federal bureaucrats. $180 billion pays for a hefty payroll increase and lots of extra benefits... but sadly would leave nothing to send back to the citizens.

Woo woo! Free money! What's not to like?
(aside from the fact that you sucked $1,400 per household out of the economy in the first place)

One thing never mentioned in these schemes is the overhead. Even when they are "revenue neutral" - meaning that for every dollar collected, a dollar is given back - you still need a new army of bureaucrats to manage the whole mess. They need buildings and forms and computers and electricity and cars and pensions. Don't forget the cost of compliance. How much time does it take *you* to fill out your annual forms? #6  Snowball Earth. Deccan Traps. Siberian Traps. Ice Ages galore and these twits are all a twitter about. Runaway. Global. Warming. Caused. By. Man-made Carbon Dioxide.
Spend the money on adapting and maybe, just maybe, raising the standards of the poorest people. Making a better life for poor people instead of starving them with indirect taxes ... what a concept!

#7  Climate history over the past 500 million years,...

One of the premises of 'global warming' is that a small rise in temperature will trigger a run-away greenhouse effect. Looking at our climate over geological time, we see periods where it was hotter or colder, with more CO2 or less, varying amounts of oxygen and so on. But at no time did the climate get stuck in one state. It constantly cycles from warm to cold and back and has done so for millions of years. I suspect it just ain't gonna happen. Not until the sun burns out, and then, all bets are off.
