Military aide demoted for misconduct at overseas clubs
[Richmond Times] WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior military aide fired by then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter has been demoted and will retire as a one-star general as a result of a misconduct investigation.

The investigation concluded that Brig. Gen. Ron Lewis used his government credit card at strip clubs or gentlemen's clubs in Rome and Seoul, drank in excess and had "improper interactions" with women during business travel.

Lewis, a West Point graduate who served in the Army for about 30 years, was reprimanded by Gen. Daniel Allyn, the vice chief of the Army, but will not face any fines.

Lewis had reached the three-star rank of lieutenant general while working for Carter, but was demoted to major general after he was fired in November 2015. The Defense Department Inspector General investigated his conduct and found him guilty of multiple counts of conduct unbecoming an officer.

It certainly seems like '60s are back with a redux of Bezerkeley protests. Except this time around instead of a free speech movement, it is a shut down free speech movement. Protests of every stripe. The common thread to all these street mobs is that they are all left-wing.

'The 9th Circuit Just Issued a Dangerous Ruling against POTUS Immigration Order
[National Review] After the Ninth Circuit’s dangerous precedent, the Trump administration needs to slow down and consider its next move.

It’s often said that bad facts make bad law. In the case of the Ninth Circuit’s just-issued ruling continuing the nationwide injunction against Donald Trump’s executive order pausing immigration from seven jihadist or jihad-torn countries, it’s necessary to amend that saying.

Bad facts combined with superheated politics can make terrible law. Before addressing the court’s ruling, let’s refer back to some of the bad facts that made it more likely. Critically, the Trump administration issued a significant executive order (and then defended it in court) without laying any real factual foundation for its finding.

Next, the administration enforced the order in a haphazard and unnecessarily cruel manner, initially including even green-card holders in its scope. By slamming the door (at least temporarily) in their faces, it created a crisis atmosphere that not only ramped up the political stakes, it told the court that the administration didn’t exactly know how to interpret its own order. This invites judicial meddling. What does the opinion actually say? It made four critical rulings and one dangerous implication.

Third, consider legislation according obstruction of justice charges and/or liability to those elected officials who prevent the enforcement of immigrations laws in any manner. Every municipality, county and state that received federal funding of any manner has had to certify full compliance with all federal laws as a condition of its receipt. It is time to unleash the full power of the federal government on these seditious bastards.

'China Will Soon Collect and Store Foreigners' Fingerprints upon entry
[South China Morning Star] Regulation, to be gradually rolled out at entry points nationwide, will affect all foreigners aged 14 to 70.

All foreigners will soon have to give their fingerprints upon entering China, with the new rule taking effect at Shenzhen’s airport on Friday.

The move, aimed at improving border checks, would see China collecting the fingerprints of all foreigners aged between 14 and 70 entering the country, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

The new regulation will start on Friday at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, among other locations, before being gradually rolled out at all checkpoints across the country.

The information would then be stored for official use, the statement said. It did not elaborate on whether the information would shared across ministries and other government agencies.

Applicants for US visas are fingerprinted, so this isn't some kind of novel requirement. That China is doing it is a little absurd and perhaps sinister, given that it's not as if visa overstays are a big problem there.

Oroville Dam in California Has Some Problems caused by too much rain
[SFGate] Story update Feb. 10 at 7 a.m.: The massive crater in the main spillway of Oroville Dam continued to grow Thursday as state officials released more water from Lake Oroville to keep up with the stormwater and snowmelt filling up the reservoir. The hole is now about 45-feet-deep and 300-feet-wide by 500-feet-long, according to KCBS.

As the lake level continues to rise, officials are saying they'll likely release water from Oroville Dam's unpaved emergency spillway for the first time ever on Saturday. The emergency release has never been used, and crews are clearing trees and brush if it's needed.

The lake is now at 98 percent capacity
[It has never been this high at this point in the year - it has also never overtopped the dam but it may do so in the next few days - although the Dam will not collapse].
Earlier this week, chunks of concrete flew off the nearly mile-long spillway, creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole. Engineers don't know what caused the cave-in that is expected to keep growing until it reaches bedrock
[probably a design error when the Dam was built or else a construction error same time frame].
The department does not expect the discharge from the reservoir to exceed the capacity of any channel downstream as the water flows through the Feather River, into the Sacramento River and on to the San Francisco Bay.

To keep track of the Reservoir situation in California go here.

To keep track of this year's good news for the Salt Lake City water basin go here.

To keep track of this year's good news for the Lake Powell and other Colorado River Reservoirs go here.

#1  The emergency release has never been used, and crews are clearing trees and brush if it's needed.

Given the size of the hole, this doesn't sound all that necessary. Unless it's needed to keep the trees and debris from floating downstream and hitting things. Maybe I'm missing something?

Posted by: AlanC || 02/10/2017 18:04 Comments || Top||

#5  CA hasn't built a dam in 30 plus years. In that time the population has doubled, thanks in part to the presence of 1/3 of all the 11-15 million illegals in the whole country. All this water, the liquid bounty that could prevent the drought conditions returning in a year or so, flows into the Pacific. So they are already anticipating water delivery restrictions to agriculture and cities perhaps as early as this year. The state is spending billions on the Bullet Train fiasco and electic car charging stations, but not a dime on water storage or catchment basins. We are governed by idiots and simpletons like Moonbeam.

Teenage girl among four suspects arrested for 'planning Paris suicide bombing'
[Yahoo] An “imminent” terror attack has been thwarted in France with the arrest of a group of suspected Isis supporters who were manufacturing explosives for a possible suicide attack.

A 16-year-old girl, named locally as Sara, was arrested alongside her 20-year-old boyfriend and two other men aged 26 and 33 near Montpellier on Friday morning.

Local reports said the group were suspected of planning a suicide bombing in an unspecified “tourist area” of Paris.

Explosives and other equipment were found during searches of a home shared by Sara and her boyfriend, identified only as Thomas.

Police discovered 71g of triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a powerful explosive widely used by Isis militants, inside a makeshift factory manufacturing the substance.

The volatile explosive, known as the “mother of Satan”, was used in the Paris and Brussels attacks, as well as the 2005 London bombings.

Isis propaganda magazines have contained instructions on how to make TATP, which is difficult to detect, from legally available and low cost products.

The suspects were arrested after buying acetone, one of the key ingredients.

Sara had allegedly used social networks to express her desire to either journey to Syria or Iraq, or attack France, and pledged loyalty to Isis in a video posted online on Wednesday.

But one of her online jihadi "mentors" was working for France's domestic intelligence agency, the DGSI, and the intelligence triggered the dawn raid on her home.

The couple had planned to have an Islamic marriage before Thomas carried out the suicide bombing, with Sara then travelling to join Isis in Syria as a "martyr's widow", BFMTV reported.

The 34-year-old man arrested is suspected of putting the couple in contact with jihadis in Syria, as well as helping the teenage girl obtain a fake passport.

Bruno Le Roux, the French interior minister, said counter-terror operations were carried out in Montpellier, Clapiers and Marseillan.

A spokesperson for his ministry said the arrests had “foiled plans for an imminent attack on French soil”, vowing that authorities would continue to fight terrorism.

A statement said three of the four people arrested were suspected of directly preparing “a “violent act”, while explosives in the course of manufacture had also been discovered at the culmination of the two-week investigation.

French farmer Cedric Herrou fined for helping migrants
[BBC] A French farmer has been convicted and given a suspended €3,000 (£2,500; $3,200) fine for helping migrants cross the French-Italian border.
Is he actually a farmer, or an Orvis male model? Where can I get that hat ?
Cedric Herrou has housed dozens of migrants in caravans on his farm in the Roya valley, in south-east France. He has been hailed by supporters as a humanitarian and has vowed to continue helping migrants, which he characterises as a civic duty.

Immigration is a key issue ahead of elections in April and May. The Nice prosecutor had asked for an eight-month suspended sentence.

Mr Herrou, 37, has become a symbol of ordinary Europeans who have taken action to aid migrants fleeing war or poverty in the Middle East and Africa. During his trial last month he said he had taken action because "there are people who have a problem".

"There are people who have died on the highway, there are families that are suffering, and there is a state which has put borders in place and has absolutely no control over the consequences," the Le Monde newspaper quoted him as saying.

The farmer continues to house teenagers from Sudan and Eritrea on his property, reports say.

Mr Herrou was acquitted of other charges, including one related to placing 50 Eritreans in a disused holiday resort owned by state rail company SNCF. There have been several similar cases in southern French courts, the AFP news agency says.

Terror Networks
Klingons twitchy about designating MB as terror organization
[PJ] The CIA has published an analysis claiming that designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization could "fuel extremism," Politico is reporting today.

Quite conveniently, this internal CIA analysis found its way into the hands of Politico reporters.

But oddly, the article fails to mention that the CIA and the U.S. intelligence community were directly involved in funding the experts who pushed the bogus "moderate Muslim Brotherhood" narrative beginning in the latter end of the Bush administration.

This hand-wringing is in response to reports that the Trump administration is actively discussing such a designation.
Don't neglect the comments.

Senior ATF official proposes loosening gun regulations
[WAPO] The second-highest-ranking official at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has written a proposal to reduce gun regulations, including examining a possible end to the ban on importing assault weapons into the United States.

The "white paper" by Ronald B. Turk, associate deputy director and chief operating officer of the ATF, calls for removing restrictions on the sale of gun silencers; allowing gun dealers to have more guns used in crimes traced to their stores before the federal government requires additional information from the dealer; and initiating a study on lifting the ban on imported assault weapons.

[Ynet] Police detained four Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
suspects who were allegedly planning to carry out a "sensational" attack in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and seized 24 suicide kaboom belts, officials said Thursday.

The latest detentions came as CIA chief Mike Pompeo arrived in Turkey to discuss the fight against the bully boy group in Syria and Iraq, making his first overseas trip since taking office.

The suspects were put under custody in an anti-terror operation in Gaziantep, near the border with Syria, according to Gaziantep provincial governor's office. Police found the suicide belts -- made with 150 kilograms of explosives and fortified with metal pieces -- as well as two automatic rifles, 14 kilograms (31 pounds) of TNT and other materials during the operation, it said.

Hamas upgrades cyber espionage capability — report
[IsraelTimes] Internal Security Minister and sports broadcaster feature in fake news items designed to persuade email users to open rogue spyware file.

An American cyber security company founded by an Israeli has identified a new cyber espionage campaign originating in the Gazoo Strip and aimed at government ministries in Israel, Arab countries and the Paleostinian Authority.

Experts say that the infrastructure behind the attacks and the way that different servers have been used to hide their source reveals that the suspected organization -- known as the Gazoo Cybergang Group -- has upgraded its capability to a level "which would not embarrass countries with reasonable cyber capabilities," The Marker, a daily business newspaper, reported Wednesday.

The Gazoo Cybergang Group is thought to be backed by the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror group which controls the Strip

Gangs of hackers sent emails to their targets from a source which looked legitimate, such as a work colleague. The emails contained fake news headlines aimed at encouraging the reader to click on an attached link or file.

Opening of the file triggered installation of a program which sent the computer user’s identifying details to a control center manned by the hackers. If the details were sufficiently interesting, spyware was installed onto the unwitting user’s computer -- spyware that could eavesdrop on conversations, read correspondence and operate the camera.

The same group opened a new internet address -- new.gov-il.host‐ as part of a specific plan to attack the Israeli government.

It was the Israeli development team at Palo Alto Networks which, having noticed repeated attempts to cyber breach different targets in Israel and elsewhere, linked the attacks, servers and tools used to a group of at least 10 hackers operating out of Gazoo.

They noticed spelling mistakes in Hebrew and English reminiscent of mistakes made by Hamas in video clips and other written materials. An analysis of the timing revealed that there was no hacking on Fridays -- a clear suggestion that the hackers were working a Middle Eastern week.

Fake news items posted as bait included photographs of Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan and sports broadcaster Sharon Perry.

The government’s National Cyber Bureau would not comment on the Gazoo attacks. It just said that different sources attempted on a regular basis to break into Israeli organizational networks.

Terrorist opens fire in Petah Tikva, is subdued with sewing machine
[IsraelTimes] Three people hurt by gunfire, one stabbed in the neck, another in the ensuing fracas at central market in Tel Aviv suburb; Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, praises attack.

At least five people were lightly maimed when a Paleostinian man shot up a bus and stabbed someone near an outdoor market in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva on Thursday evening, officials said.

Police officers later tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
the West Bank man, who was still in possession of the gun used in the attack, a police spokesperson said.

The Hamas terror group in Gazoo praised the attack as a "natural result" of Israeli crimes, but did not claim responsibility. Hamas called on other Paleostinians to follow the gunman’s example, Ynet reported.

Just before 5:00 p.m., the gunman, shot up a bus near the Petah Tikva market on Baron Hirsch Street. One a man in his 50s was shot in the leg, while two women -- one in her 50s, the other in her 30s -- were hit by shrapnel, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.

He was identified by Paleostinian media as Sadeq Nasser Abu Mazen, 18, from Beita al-Foka, a village south of Nablus.

The Paleostinian teenager used a Carlo-style submachine gun, a comparatively cheap improvised firearm, which is prevalent in the West Bank. Carlos, which are often cobbled together from water pipes and spare parts, are notoriously unreliable, and the weapon used in the attack apparently jammed multiple times. What is normally an automatic weapon was only able to fire a shot every few seconds, according to videos from the scene. An eyewitness told Walla news that the gunnies also entered a shop and tried to open fire, but his gun wouldn’t work at all.

The incident occurred at the entrance to the city’s busy central market, which was crowded with people shopping ahead of Shabbat.

After shooting at the bus, the suspect continued on foot towards Hovevei Tziyon Street, running through the city’s alleyways, before he was cornered by a group of civilians outside a sewing machine repair shop, according to police officer Ami Ben-David.

The Ynet news site reported that one of the civilians used one of the shop’s sewing machines to take down the attacker. An eyewitness told Channel 2 news that he used a wood plank to hit the man as well, and said the suspect yelled in Arabic as he was tackled.

In the scuffle, a man in his 40s was stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver as he attempted to apprehend the assailant, he told medics.

After the suspected terrorist was subdued by the citizens, coppers arrived and arrested him. He was handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning, Ben-David said.

Alon Rizkan, one of the medics, described the scene following the attack as "chaos." Videos from the scene show people screaming and fleeing from the scene en masse. During the commotion that followed, another man, estimated to be in his 30s, suffered a light head wound, MDA said. He had been set upon by a mob after the attack, as they mistook him for the terrorist responsible for the attack.

A video of the incident shows coppers leading away the Arab Israeli man, as bystanders shout curses at him. A few members of the crowd tried to strike him, but police kept them back. One bystander defended the Arab Israeli man, telling the crowd: "He didn’t do anything. Let the man go."

Officers reportedly arrested the man, but released him a short time later, after realizing that he had not been involved in the attack.

Three people were also treated after they suffered anxiety attacks, MDA said. In total, eight victims were taken to Petah Tikva’s Beilinson Hospital for treatment, the ambulance service said.

A Rishon Lezion court issued a gag order on all details of the case, police said.

India-Pakistan
6 militants shot to death in Gadap
Sindh police on Thursday conducted an operation in Gadap town, killing six men belonging to 'banned militant organisations', Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar Ahmed said.

The six men belonged to proscribed organizations Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, and were involved in targeting law enforcement personnel, Anwar alleged.

One of the men was also involved in the Army Public School attack, police officials said. An ID card was found from his pocket, but the investigators are trying to verify his identity as the card he was carrying may have been faked.

One of the men killed, Ibrahim Haydri, had allegedly been wanted by police for his involvement in grenade attacks and firing on various police officials in different areas of Karachi.

"Haydri and the other militants were responsible for the death of around 25 police personnel," the SSP alleged.

"The [six men] were shot dead in a gun battle during the police operation," SSP Anwar added.

The police had launched the operation on an intelligence tip-off. Acting on the information received, police officials said they conducted a targeted raid on a chicken farm off Superhighway near the Baqai Medical University.

As police personnel encircled the farm, the militants allegedly opened fire, which was returned by the police. The “heavy exchange of firing” lasted almost one hour, police claimed.

A police source said one G3 rifle, one 7mm rifle, one repeater, one 9mm pistol, one mauser, and one 30 bore weapon were recovered from the alleged militants.

Europe
German police raids target Islamists suspected of planning terror attack
[DeutscheWelle] Police have raided a dozen locations and detained two men in an operation against the radical Islamist scene. They mobilized after indications of a planned attack solidified over the past two days.

Nearly 450 police and special commando units conducted pre-dawn raids on Thursday against suspects in the central city of Göttingen after collecting intelligence on plans for a terror attack.

Police chief Uwe Luhrig said that indications of a "potentially imminent terror attack" had "solidified to such an extent in recent days," that authorities elected to mobilize against the prime suspects and their close associates.

Two men deemed to pose a threat were taken into custody as part of the operation that targeted a dozen locations. The 27-year-old Algerian national and 23-year-old Nigerian national were long active in the radical Islamist scene in Göttingen and were under surveillance, police said. They were both born in Germany and lived with their parents.

The raids yielded weapons and ammunition as well as "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
" flags, Sherlocks said.

Boris Pistorius, the state of Lower Saxony's interior minister, called the operation a "very important blow against the [radical Islamist] scene." He said the two men had "very concrete" attack plans, but at the moment it is unclear if the suspects had determined an exact time for an attack.

The raids come as German authorities have conducted a string of operations targeting suspected terror plotters.

The terror threat has prompted the German government to pass a raft of security measures in recent months as security questions and immigration take a prominent role in upcoming national elections in September.

Alabama AG sworn in to replace Jeff Sessions
[FOXNEWS] Republican Luther Strange, Alabama's attorney general, was sworn in on Thursday to fill the Senate seat left empty by Jeff Sessions, tapped by President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

Sen. Orrin Hatch
...Republican Senator-for-Life from Utah. The state does have two senators but nobody can remember who the other guy is...
, R-Utah, administered the oath to Strange, a well-connected Republican and former Washington lobbyist. Attorney General Sessions and Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama were at Strange's side in the well of the Senate, and applause filled the chamber after the oath.

Strange joins the Senate after Sessions' confirmation as U.S. attorney general Wednesday night. The 63-year-old lawyer has been the state's attorney general since 2011. His selection caps two months of jockeying and political guessing games over who would get the nod from Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley.

The appointment comes two months after Strange asked the Alabama House Judiciary Committee to pause an impeachment probe of Bentley, who was accused last year of having an affair with a onetime top political adviser.

militias, officials said.

The deaths occurred as forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Masnour Hadi advanced into neighborhoods of Mokha and Houthis retreated to northern and western parts of the town, military sources said.

Loyalists backed by the Arab coalition entered the strategic port town in late January as part of their efforts to drive the militias away from the Red Sea coast.

The festivities on Wednesday killed 24 Houthis, including 12 whose bodies were taken a hospital in Mokha, medical officials said.

The other 12 were militias whose remains were found by advancing troops and later buried in Mokha, a loyalist military official said.

Eight soldiers were killed, military and medical officials said.

Mokha was Yemen’s main port serving as its export hub for coffee until it was overtaken by Aden and Hodeida in the 19th century.

Bahrain kills three fugitives fleeing for Iran by sea
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Bahrain has confirmed that three runaways fleeing for Iran where killed when they opened fire on coastguard personnel.

The security operation to stop the runaway vessel was one of two conducted on Thursday which authorities foiling an attempt by "terrorist runaways" wanted in connection with a January prison break to flee by sea to Iran on Thursday.

"The first operation occurred at dawn in Bahrain’s surrounding waters, and was undertaken following an attempt by escapees from Jau prison to flee to Iranian waters," a ministry spokesperson confirmed to Al Arabiya English in a written statement.

"A second operation undertaken by authorities was connected to the Jau prison attack, the murder of First Lt. Hisham Al Hammadi - who was bumped off in Bilad Al Qadeem on 29 January 2017 - and the shooting of a police officer in Bani Jamra on 14 January 2017," the statement added.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
3 Turkish soldiers die in Russian airstrike
"Moi plokho!"
Russian air strikes accidentally killed three Turkish soldiers and wounded 11 others when engaging in an operation against terror group ISIS in northern Syria on Thursday, the Turkish military said.

“During an operation by a Russia Federation warplane against ISIS targets in the region of the Euphrates Shield operation in Syria, a bomb accidentally hit a building used by Turkish Army units,” the military said in statement.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin had called Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan and expressed his condolences, blaming the misdirected strikes on poor coordination between Moscow and Ankara.

The incident highlighted the risk of unintended clashes between the numerous outside powers involved in Syria’s complex six-year-old war. Besides Russia and Turkey, they include Iran-aligned proxy Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed militias, and members of a U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS.

Russia is a key ally of Syrian authoritarian Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey supports the rebels opposing him. In 2015, Turkey shot down a Russian air force jet that it said had crossed into Turkish airspace, though Moscow denied that happened.

Turkish-backed Syrian rebels meanwhile pursued a major offensive against the ISIS-held Syrian city of al-Bab, 30 km south of the border with Turkey.

A rebel commander said fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), working with Turkish commanders, were moving forward from territory near the western gates of the city, which they had stormed on Wednesday.
“The battles began a short while ago to complete what had been achieved yesterday,” said a commander of a leading FSA group fighting in al-Bab, who requested anonymity.

The capture of the town would deepen Turkish influence in an area of northern Syria where it has created a de facto buffer zone. It launched its Euphrates Shield operations in August, backing Syrian rebels with special forces, tanks and aircraft to sweep ISIS hardliners from its border area and stop the advance of a Kurdish militia.

Keynote Zuma speech disrupted as lawmakers brawl, walk out
[REUTERS] A session of South Africa's parliament convened for a keynote address by the president descended into chaos on Thursday as far-left politicians brawled with orderlies after interrupting the speech and the main opposition party walked out.

Deputies from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party fired questions at Jacob Zuma for more than an hour, forcing the president - whose authority has been tarnished by a series of scandals - to halt his state-of-the-nation speech.

Zuma had earlier authorized more than 400 soldiers to join the security team outside the building during the speech, an unprecedented move his opponents described as a "militarization" of parliament.

Speaker Baleka Mbete ordered the EFF contingent ejected after their leader Julius Malema called Zuma "rotten to the core".

Exiting the chamber with his deputies a short time later, opposition Democratic Alliance party leader Mmusi Maimane said the president was unfit to hold office.

Previous Zuma speeches in parliament have led to disruptions but Thursday's - in which he said the government would push for a greater role for blacks in the economy - was the most violent, with the scuffles spilling over into the precinct of the building, Rooters news hounds saw.

A couple of blocks away, police fired stun grenades to disperse supporters of the EFF and the president's African National Congress (ANC) party.

The party holds more than 60 percent of the 400 seats in parliament but Zuma faced a revolt by some ANC members in November.

That same month an anti-corruption watchdog called for a judicial inquiry into alleged influence-peddling in his government. He has denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!

Swedish police chief's car explodes in Stockholm
A car belonging to the police chief of the Swedish city of Uppsala has exploded in northern Stockholm. No one was injured in the incident, but police are now investigating a possible link between the blast and the officer’s activities.

The vehicle, parked outside the police chief’s home in the northern part of Stockholm, blew up during the early hours of Monday morning, according to broadcaster SVT, citing investigators.

The police chief and his family are being cared for, and officials have launched a preliminary investigation on the basis of endangering public safety.

"We can't rule anything out just now, but we are working to try and find out what the motive could be for the detonation,” Uppsala police spokesperson Lisa Sannervik told the TT news agency, as cited by the Local.

“With regards to the threat situation, that’s something we’re working on right now, to see if there is a link between the blast and the employee. We can’t say any more than that right now,” the spokesperson added.

The vehicle will be moved to another location to undergo a thorough examination, Mats Eriksson of the Stockholm police told SVT.

“It is a serious case when a police officer gets exposed to this type of threat,” he said. “We are investigating other things I cannot address at the moment, but this is an acute threat that we take seriously.”

Afghanistan
US Afghan commander: Russia 'legitimizing' Taliban to undermine US, NATO
Russia is trying to legitimize the Taliban in order to undermine the United States and NATO, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan said Thursday.

“The Russian involvement this year has become more difficult,” Gen. John Nicholson told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “First, they have begun to publicly legitimize the Taliban. This narrative that they promote is that the Taliban are fighting Islamic State and the Afghan government is not fighting Islamic State and that, therefore, there could be spillover of this group into the region. This is a false narrative.”

“I believe its intent is to undermine the United States and NATO,” he later added.

Nicholson was testifying about the current situation in Afghanistan, which he called a stalemate that he needs a few thousand more troops to break.

Among the challenges in the country are the actions of external actors such as Pakistan, Iran and Russia, Nicholson said. He said Russia's meddling in Afghanistan started in 2016 and continues to increase.

In addition to spreading a narrative that the Taliban is fighting the Afghan branch of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Russia has also organized a series of meetings to discuss the future of Afghanistan without inviting the Afghan government, Nicholson said.

“Afghanistan is trying to work with all of its neighbors and all of the stakeholders,” he said. “They've reached out to the Russians about this. And we believe, that a peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan should be Afghan-led.”

Nicholson also alluded to “reports” about Russia supporting the Taliban more directly.
'Alluded to reports?' What about confirmed and validated intelligence reporting? The Russian meme continues.
Nicholson’s comments on the difficulty Russia poses in Afghanistan come as President Trump has talked about wanting to mend relations between Moscow and Washington. Senators from both parties have been critical of Trump’s position on Russia, and Nicholson’s testimony could add fuel to their arguments against improving relations with Moscow.

After hearing Nicholson’s testimony, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said Trump should know that Russia has been “cozying up” to the Taliban.

“I think we better let President Trump know that,” he said.
But wait! Isn't that something that should be highlighted (special update) in the “President's Daily Brief,” or P.D.B. ?
Nicholson replied: “Yes, sir.”

The Great Game started in 2016, wow, who knew? The Russians seem to be fishing troubled waters all around their national borders. If Afghanistan is a failed state, that the US will eventually(soon?) give up on, it seems reasonable that the Russian Bear would explore future ties.

Veteran Qaeda leader killed
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The US military said Wednesday that it had killed eleven al-Qaeda operatives, including a veteran leader and suicide kaboom pioneer, in a bombing raid in Syria. The Pentagon said Abu Hani al-Masri, the Qaeda veteran, was one of those killed in the precision Arclight airstrikes near Idlib carried out on February 3-4.

Al-Masri was an early official in al-Qaeda, overseeing the group’s training camps in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 1990s as he worked with Qaeda founder the late Osama bin Laden

"You're not going out at night, you're not going to get food, you're not going to meet your girlfriend. You're in your house," Taylor told him, raising her voice. "I'm giving you an opportunity to go to school and not be in jail pending this trial. The curfew is 1 p.m., 7 days a week."
Rrrr! Tough! Don't get too much tougher than that, do you?
Deal said he understood.
Right.
Taylor wished him luck.
"I trust you, now!"
The next day about 3 p.m., Deal was fatally shot by a Baltimore police officer after allegedly jumping out of a vehicle being tailed by officers and fleeing through the same neighborhood where he'd been arrested the week before. Police said an officer chasing Deal shot him after he saw Deal had a gun and feared for his own life.
"Don't shoot!" he begged, just before the copper shot him full of holes. He had his hands up! He was pleadin' for his life! He was a good boy...!
The officer's body camera captured the shooting, police said.
Ewps.
An aunt said Thursday the family was not prepared to make a statement. Deal's attorney also declined to comment Thursday.
"Prob'y somebody else in the camera!"
Almost immediately after the shooting, the circumstances of Deal's release became a flashpoint in the growing debate in Baltimore around perceived leniency for repeat gun offenders in the court system. "That's really despicable, because it's putting our officers and our citizens in harm's way seeing these people continuously possess these firearms and walk these streets and want to inflict harm on people," said T.J. Smith, a police front man.
"But he had his hands up! Youse can see it! Kinda!"
"It shows dysfunction, I believe, in our criminal justice system," said Mayor Catherine Pugh. "People who have those many gun charges probably should not be on our streets."
"An' dat might not be a gun in his hand! It wuz prob'ly a bag o' Skittles!"
Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein said authorities need to "make sure people carrying guns in the community are held accountable." He said Deal's death was "tragic," but that the officer was "put in a situation maybe he shouldn't have been in."
I'm not sure what was so tragic about it.

Smith, Pugh and Rosenstein all emphasized the context for their comments: a city reeling from gun violence, with more than a killing a day so far in 2017. But none of them spoke to the specific nature of Deal's arrests, the evidence against him, or the conditions of his release.
Wipe the meal from your chins, guys. You're drooling.
The recording of Deal's 20-minute bail review hearing from the day before his death as well as court records from his two prior arrests provide a better understanding of those circumstances.
A better understanding of how a formerly nice city came to be uninhabitable.
Deal, who turned 18 in November, was first arrested as an adult in the city just a month ago.
Don't even ask about his juvie record. No doubt he was a nice boy, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The coppers prob'ly had it in for him, too.
On Jan. 4, he was charged with four handgun counts. According to court records, plainclothes officers were in an unmarked vehicle in the 1100 block of S. Carey Street that day when they observed Deal, whom they recognized, standing on a corner. Upon seeing the officers, Deal looked startled, "put his hands up in the air and shouted 'I'm leaving,'" police wrote.
"Hands up! Don't shoot! I wuz just standin' here mindin' my own bidnid!"
As he did, an officer saw a bulge in his waistline, which the officer believed to be a gun, the records say.
"Izzat a .380 in yer waistband or are ya happy to see me?"
One of the officers exited the vehicle and Deal ran, thus beginning an extended foot chase.
See? Dey had it in for him!
Eventually Deal was caught.
[TACKLE!]
"Ow! Police brutality!"
"Shuddup."
[CLICK!]

The officer chasing him said he'd heard Deal throw the gun in an alley and it was recovered, the records say.
"Not my gun! Somebody left it dere!"
At the time, Deal was already prohibited from possessing a firearm after a previous juvenile arrest, the records say.
"It wuz just for personal use!"
Deal was transported to the hospital because "he was complaining that he couldn't breathe," and later was charged.
"I can't breathe! I can't breathe!"
"Yeah. That's what they all say!"

He posted $100,000 bail the next day and was released.
"Can you take a personal check?"
"This is Baltimore. Of course we can!"
"Can you hold it until Thursday?"

On Jan. 30, Deal was arrested a second time -- again by plainclothes officers, again after an extended pursuit.
[TACKLE!]
"Ow! Police brutality!"
"Shuddup."
[CLICK!]

According to court records, he'd been spotted approaching a vehicle, seeing officers, then taking off with a clenched fist, court records say.
"What's that in his hand?"
"Prob'ly Skittles."
"Better chase him to make sure!"
"Boy, I really got it in for him!"

Deal allegedly tossed a bag of suspected heroin under a car before he was caught, court records say. He was released on his own recognizance the next day.
"Okay. You can go. But don't do it again!"
"No, no, commissioner! Of course not!"
"Better spit out that mouthful of butter, kid. It don't seem to be melting!"

At Deal's bail review hearing Monday, Taylor began considering his third arrest, from last week, in which he was charged with nine new gun and drug counts.
"Nine new gun and drug counts?"
Police alleged that Deal had been involved in a large-scale drug operation in several vacant homes in the 1900 block of Frederick Avenue, according to court records. Raiding the homes, officers netted a gun, ammunition, hundreds of gel caps of suspected heroin, and thousands of dollars in cash, records show. Deal had run from the location with a co-defendant in the case and both had been arrested, police said. Officers had pinned the entire haul on the pair.
"Dat wudn't mine! Somebody left it here!"
In court, Taylor pressed prosecutors about the charges against Deal. She acknowledged drug transactions were occurring at the home, and that Deal and his co-defendant were in the area and had wanted to escape when police rushed in. But she noted a difference between Deal and the co-defendant. "They want to get out of that yard, and in the yard there's a lot of money, and on his co-defendant there's a lot of money and there's lots of gel caps. But on Mr. Deal there's no money, no drugs, no gun...?" Taylor asked.
"They're both standing in the same tub of poop, but he don't have none in his mouth? Gotta give him benefit of the doubt!"
"How about the other guy, yer honor?"
"Listerine."

"He's an active participant in a large-scale sale of drugs," said Assistant State's Attorney David Chiu, arguing for the state. "This isn't someone who just happened to be there. This was a lengthy period of observation with multiple sales. Flight obviously is evidence of guilty knowledge."
"I know you're a legal genius and everything, yer honor, but trust me on that!"
Chiu pointed out that Deal was already out on $100,000 bail from his previous gun case at the time of this arrest.
"See? Here's his check, exhibit K!"
"Given the connection of violence and drugs and guns and the enormous amount of drugs that were being sold here, while he's out on bail for guns, the state thinks he poses a continuing and extreme risk to public safety," Chiu said.
"Y'think?"
Taylor asked Deal's defense attorney, Jerome Bivens, what he thought.
My guess would be racism.
"Judge, this was a lot of confusion, a whole lot of people, and this is the standard scenario: We see two black guys running, we're going to lock them up," Bivens said.
Toldja so!
Bivens said Deal was in his last year at Digital Harbor High School.
"He's still a schoolboy!"
His family attended church,
"He might, too. Someday. Who knows?"
he played basketball.
"Midnight basketball!"
"He tells me that his intention is to go into the Army and to study engineering," Bivens said.
"And the U.S. Army would be ever so happy to get a guy like him!"
Taylor said she understood all the facts in the case weren't clear, but noted Deal's pending gun and drug charges. "And now here he is running allegedly from an area where there's lots of guns and drugs," Taylor said.
"Just the wrong place at the wrong time, yer honor! Coulda happened to anybody!"
"Ain't never happened to me!"

Bivens declined to comment Thursday. A court spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment from Taylor.
"He's dead now. We should just move on..."
Deal -- who listed himself as jobless and indigent in court records -- had been released on a $250,000 unsecured bond, meaning he wouldn't have to put any money down but would theoretically have to pay the full amount if he didn't show up for court.
"Can you take a personal check?"
"Yer sure it's good?"
"Can you hold it till Saturday?"

In addition to that and the curfew, Deal would have to check in with the court three times a week, and bring proof that he was attending classes, Taylor said.
That worked well.
The next day, hours after his 1 p.m. curfew, Deal was back in the same block of Frederick Avenue where the drug bust had happened the week before, this time bleeding on the ground.
And the rest is past tense.
Col. Stanley Brandford, the Baltimore Police Department's chief of detectives, said the agency planned to release body camera footage to the public.
"Youse can't do dat! Yer violatin' his privacy!"

2 die in suicide bombing attack in Fallujah

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Two Iraqi army soldiers were killed and two others were injured Thursday when a suicide bombing targeted their checkpoint south of Anbar’s city of Fallujah.

A security source told Alsumaria News that a booby-trapped car driven by a suicide bomber attacked the checkpoint on Fallujah-Ameriyat al-Sumoud road, causing the casualties.

Islamic State has waged several attacks against security forces in Anbar and other provinces since Iraqi government forces launched a major offensive in 2016 to retake regions occupied by the extremist group since 2014.

The group has been holding a few hideouts in western Anbar since 2014 that are still awaiting an official order by the government for security operations. Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets regularly carry out airstrikes against the group’s locations in those areas. Early January, the province’s army commnand launched a brief offensive against IS targets in the west, recapturing a few villages before halting again.

Last Sunday, Eid al-Karbouli, a spokesperson of the Anbar province council, was quoted by Alsumaria News as saying that there were not enough troops to take over the targeted Islamic State-held towns, adding that the forces available were not “well-prepared” to assume security at the province’s borders with Syria.

ISIS launches simultaneous attacks in Tikrit
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) A security source in Salahuddin Province declared that the self-proclaimed Islamic State group launched two simultaneous attacks on north and east of Tikrit, Alsumaria News reported on Thursday.

The source said, “The first attack was launched before midnight from two axis on Ajil oil field, east of Tikrit, where the group advanced on in Ankhila axis, south of the oil field.”

“Clashes are taking place now in the northern axis of the oil field, but security forces are fighting and summon reinforcements to repulse the attack,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

“The second attack was launched on north of Tikrit, where security forces foiled the attack but clashes are still ongoing, using medium and heavy weapons,” the source explained.

The source revealed that seven members of security forces were wounded, while the Islamic State’s casualties have not been determine so far.

2 die in Jufra air raid
[Libya Herald] At least two people are believed to be dead and another 13 wounded following Libyan National Army air strikes on a Jufra air base.

Details are unclear, but sources say the main target appeared to be the Benghazi Defence Brigade militia allied to Islamist forces including the so-called Islamic State and Ansar Al-Sharia. However, there are other militias in the area including those from Misrata.

Before the attack local residents reported hearing the sound of planes overhead.

The LNA has reportedly launched other airstrikes against BDB militiamen in and around Hun and a force under Mohamed Ben Nayel had been pushing towards Sebha until stopped in December by the Misratan Third Force.

Only a few weeks ago, LNA planes hit a group of senior Misratan officials when they landed at a Jufra airbase. Six of them were wounded including the spokesman of the Misrata Military Council, Bayt Al-Mal.
Another Libya Herald article adds:
The aircraft attacking the Jufra airbase are believed to have taken off from the Al-Khadim base – allegedly used in recent weeks and put at the disposal of aircraft from the UAE. It is said to be a base for drones provided by the UAE.

Home Front: WoT
Refugees flooding in as 9th Circus Upholds Judge on Ban
The State Department has more than doubled the rate of refugees from Iraq, Syria and other suspect countries in the week since a federal judge’s reprieve, in what analysts said appears to be a push to admit as many people as possible before another court puts the program back on ice.
Paging Secretary Tillerman...
A staggering 77 percent of the 1,100 refugees let in since Judge James L. Robart’s Feb. 3 order have been from the seven suspect countries. Nearly a third are from Syria alone — a country that President Trump has ordered be banned altogether from the refugee program. Another 21 percent are from Iraq. By contrast, in the two weeks before Judge Robart’s order, just 9 percent of refugees were from Syria and 6 percent were from Iraq.

“There’s no doubt in my mind they would be doing whatever they could to get people in before something changes because, from their perspective, their motivation is to resettle these folks. It would not be the first time that State Department officials have prioritized facilitating someone’s entry to the United States over security concerns,” said Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies.
Has our new Secretary of State gone missing?
Mr. Trump issued an executive order Jan. 27 putting in place the early stages of his extreme vetting policy, including an immediate 90-day pause on admitting visitors from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen — all countries where the government says it can’t be sure of its vetting procedures.

Kenya court blocks closure of Dadaab refugee camp
[Dhaka Tribune] A Kenyan court said on Thursday it would be unconstitutional for the government to close a sprawling refugee camp housing mostly people who have fled unrest in neighbouring Somalia.
I'm afraid I just don't understand the suicide mentality of the judges in the various courts around the world today...
Nairobi has vowed to shut Dadaab, once seen as the world’s largest refugee camp, because it says the complex has been used by Islamist forces of Evil from Somalia as a recruiting ground to launch a string of attacks on Kenyan soil.

But rights groups argued it would hurt Somalis fleeing violence and poverty and accused Kenya of forcibly sending people back to a war zone. The government has dismissed that allegation.

"The government’s decision specifically targeting Somali refugees is an act of group persecution, illegal, discriminatory and therefore unconstitutional," High Court judge John Mativo said in a ruling.

At its peak, as Somalis fled conflict and famine in 2011, Dadaab’s population swelled to about 580,000, earning it a reputation at the time as the world’s largest refugee camp. Early last year, UN officials said the number had fallen to 350,000, while a Kenyan official later in the year put it at 250,000.

The government originally wanted to shut down Dadaab last November, but delayed the closure after international pressure to give residents more time to find new homes.

The court’s action was welcomed by rights groups.

"The High Court sent a strong message that at least one of Kenya’s branches of government is still willing to uphold refugee rights," said Laetitia Bader, Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch.

India-Pakistan
Six suspected AQIS, TTP militants killed in ‘encounter’
[DAWN] KARACHI: Six suspected murderous Moslems allegedly involved in assassinations of over two dozen law enforcers in the metropolis and the deadly attack on Army Public School in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
were bumped off by police in an ’encounter’ on the outskirts of the city on Thursday evening, according to police officials.

The contingents of police, acting on information provided by an intelligence agency, conducted a targeted raid on a poultry farm, off the Superhighway, behind Baqai Medical University, said Gadap City SHO Khan Nawaz.

The murderous Moslems resorted to firing when the police encircled a spot, to which the law enforcers retaliated. During "heavy exchange of fire," which lasted an hour, six murderous Moslems were killed, according to the SHO.

The police conducted the raid acting on information about the presence of murderous Moslems belonging to banned outfits such as Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain and Tehrik-e-Taliban (Swati group), said Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

The senior officer said one of the murderous Moslems was involved in the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar on Dec 16, 2014. He added that a computerised national identity card (CNIC) was found in his pocket, and the Sherlocks were trying to verify his identity as he might be carrying a ’fake identity card’. The Lion of Islam originally hailed from Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
and belonged to TTP’s Raheem Shah group, the SSP added.

Another Lion of Islam was identified as Noor Afsar alias Ada alias Ganga, who was affiliated with AQIS. "These murderous Moslems were involved in grenade and gun attacks on law enforcers in Ibrahim Hyderi, Korangi, Zaman Town and other areas of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, in which 25 police personnel bit the dust," said SSP Anwar.

The police claimed to have seized a G-3 rifle, a 7mm rifle, a repeater, a 9mm pistol, a mouser and a 30-bore pistol from their custody. The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Interestingly, the reports of the deadly encounter carried the name of the same officer who is known for his aggressive and sometimes controversial professional history. Rao Anwar was reinstated as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir only last month, following direct orders issued to the police chief by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

(MQM) leader Khawaja Izharul Hasan’s house without the permission of the Sindh Assembly speaker.

He had also moved the Sindh High Court to challenge his suspension. In his petition, the officer said that the raid was conducted in accordance with the law. He had pleaded to the high court to declare his suspension orders illegal.

US may sanction Iran over Yemen, Hezbollah and Iraq
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The new United States administration, under President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, is believed to be exerting pressure for imposition of new sanctions against Iran in response to their activities in the Middle East and fueling instability in the region.

The administration is said to be studying several aspects for the sanctions, which one includes the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and their meddling in other countries in the region, specifically Syria and Iraq.

US officials were cited by Rooters news agency and the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
on Wednesday as saying that the Trump administration is considering a proposal for sanctions that mentions the Revolutionary Guards on the list of terrorist organizations, alongside the Moslem Brüderbund.

The plan to place sanctions on Iran has strong support within the White House. It is expected that the final plan will reviewed by US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. Many US officials have accused the Revolutionary Guards of supporting proxy wars in the Middle East.

Hezbollah, Houthis and Iraq
The next step may be to impose sanctions on Iran for its support to some terrorist groups. A senior US official involved in the review of policy towards Tehran revealed that the new administration considers Iran a threat to US interests and is looking for ways to put pressure on them.

The official added that the White House could revoke the nuclear deal to punish Tehran for its support to groups in the Middle East such as Leb’s Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
besides other Shiite organizations in Iraq.

Trump has said that the Iran nuclear deal, which ended a diplomatic standoff between Iran and six world powers over the country’s nuclear policy and opens the way for western investment, was "the worst deal ever negotiated."

Fierce fighting 20km from Raqqa
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Fierce fighting took place on Wednesday between gunnies and US-backed Syrian rebels just 20 kilometers from the ISIS’s self-proclaimed capital of Raqqa, an AFP news hound saw.

On Saturday, the rebels ‐ a coalition of fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) ‐ announced a new phase in a bid to capture Raqqa, and mounted an attack from north and northeast. An AFP news hound at Bir Fawaz, 20 km north of Raqqa, heard machine-gun fire all day Wednesday as SDF attacked ISIS positions in the neighboring village of Maayzila.

The village also came under repeated attack by at least three anti-ISIS coalition warplanes, and heavy smoke could be seen billowing from there. "There has been heavy fighting since the morning. Many IS fighters are holed up inside Maayzila," the local SDF commander, Ararat Kojer, told AFP.

Twelve villages have fallen to the rebels in the latest phase of the offensive, which was launched on November 6. "Progress is slow because ISIS are putting up a ferocious resistance and placed mines around the approaches to many villages," Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is monitoring the conflict, told AFP.

The SDF, which has been lobbying for weapons to help them carry out the offensive, has recently received armored SUVs from the United States. A US-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes on ISIS in Syria and neighboring Iraq since 2014. The s offensive is being supported by 500 US troops, including demining teams, military trainers and members of the special forces.

Earlier Wednesday, a front man for the coalition predicted that the IS bastion would soon be almost cut off. Although it will not be completely encircled, "it will be very difficult to get into or out of the city," Colonel John Dorrian said in a video conference from Baghdad.

"What we would expect is that within the next few weeks the city will be nearly completely isolated," Dorrian said. US-backed Iraqi forces have wrested part of the Iraqi city of djinn-infested Mosul

from ISIS control, although the city’s western districts have yet to be retaken.

Europe
US Senator: break up "Macedonia"
Senator Dana Rohrabacher, who chairs the US Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and emerging threats, suggested the landlocked nation should be divided between neighbouring states. The 70-year-old said that “division” in Macedonia meant “they will never be able to live together in future”.
It's an interesting point and one that we've covered in the past here at the Burg. The FYR of Macedonia has an Albanian core in its west and a Bulgarian core in its east. It's a papered-together country. The region was fought over several times in the run-up to World War One, and it took Tito's considerable influence (and jackboots) to keep the region from blowing up after World War Two. There's a low level Albanian insurgency that wants to split off the western part, and the Russians (of course) have been meddling.
“Kosovars and Albanians from Macedonia should be part of Kosovo and the rest of Macedonia should be part of Bulgaria or any other country to which they believe they are related,” he told Albanian TV channel, Vizion Plus. “The idea is to keep Macedonia alive because someone 30 years ago decided it is a configuration that should come out of the dismantling of Yugoslavia, does not lead to an explanation that this idea is still held.”

A landlocked country in Southeast Europe's Balkan peninsula, the Repcublic of Macedonia is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. It became a member of the United Nations in 1993, but as a result of an ongoing dispute with Greece over the use of the name "Macedonia", it was admitted under the provisional description the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Mr Rohrabacher's comments echo a suggestion by Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. In 2015, he said that “ideas have been floated” about giving the Republic of Macedonia “to Albania, and another part to Bulgaria”.

Asked if Donald Trump would support his idea, Mr Rohrabacher said he “had influence” on US policymakers and his committee would hold hearings in the “coming months”.

His comments provoked a furious response from the Macedonian foreign ministry which accused him of inflaming "nationalistic rhetoric".

“His expressed views generated immense anxiety regarding Macedonia and the region,” it said in a statement. “They inflame nationalist rhetoric in the neighbouring regions, taking us back into the past. We believe that the US State Department will adequately remove any doubt about the stated positions and will affirm its policy towards Macedonia and the Balkans.”

44 Daesh terrorists 'neutralized' in northern Syria
A total of 44 Daesh terrorists were “neutralized” over the last 24 hours as part of Turkey’s Operation Euphrates Shield in northern Syria, the military announced Thursday, Anadolu reported.

Turkish Armed Forces, who use the word "neutralized" to refer to killed, wounded or captured terrorists, also hit 253 Daesh targets in air and artillery strikes over the same period, the General Staff said in a statement.

Coalition aircraft hit six Daesh targets in northern Syria during 24 hours, the statement said.

Afghanistan
Hekmatyar’s new role
[DAWN] IS the peace deal between the Afghan government and former warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
a template for future peace agreements or a one-off affair that comes down to the savvy of Mr Hekmatyar and Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
’s desperation? With the lifting of UN sanctions and the likely release of some of Mr Hekmatyar’s allies, the Hezb-e-Islami leader is expected to come out of hiding and enter Kabul as a rehabilitated public figure of Afghanistan. While some power centres in Kabul may regard Mr Hekmatyar as a potential ally in the complicated and ever-worsening political balancing acts in the Afghan capital, the greater value may be in the Hezb leader showing the way for those among the Afghan Taliban who may be interested in knowing the possibilities of life in Afghanistan if they strike a deal with the government. But it will not be easy. The deal has been facilitated by the reality that both sides had something to offer the other: Mr Hekmatyar is a relatively marginal opposition, bad boy figure who appears to have been looking for political relevance in Kabul again; the Hezb-e-Islami is small enough for Kabul to not need to make massive concessions.

With the Taliban, the calculations are necessarily different. The group may not be in a position to overrun government strongholds, but neither is the government in a position to wrest back Taliban strongholds. To that years-old position, the annual spring uncertainty is about to be introduced: will the end of winter and the start of the fighting season cause a tipping point this year? For at least two external reasons, the Taliban may feel more emboldened than usual this spring. First, the new US administration appears focused on the bad boy Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group and does not, at least for now, appear interested in significantly expanding the US military mission in Afghanistan. Second, Russia has upped its interest in Afghanistan in a manner that may favour the Taliban in the short term -- the fear of IS spreading inside Afghanistan and to regional countries may release some of the military and diplomatic pressure on the Taliban to work towards a peace settlement. But for Pakistain, the policy must remain focused on a peace settlement. It is the only guarantee of long-term regional peace and stability. Short-term interests should not cloud the greater good. Quiet but determined diplomacy towards a peace settlement should continue to be the approach.

Mass grave of ISIS victims found in Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces ran into two mass graves containing the bodies of unknown victims killed by Islamic State militants in Anbar province, a security source there said Thursday.

The source told Alsumaria News that a force from the army’s 1st division found the graves in a sanitary dump behind al-Askari district in the town of Rutba, 310 km west of Ramadi.

The source added that a team of forensic officials would arrive later to open up the graves to identify people the corpses belonged to.

Several mass graves have been found as Iraqi security forces recaptured several areas held by IS militants since 2014. Islamic State regularly executed security agents and civilians collaborating with security or violating its extreme religious rules.

The group has been holding a few hideouts in western Anbar since 2014 that are still awaiting an official order for security operations. Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets regularly carry out airstrikes against the group’s locations in those areas.

Battles between Islamic State and Iraqi troops have displaced at least 191.000 civilians, according to government data. The extremist group has regularly targeted and executed people attempting to flee areas under its control, according to citizens and aid groups.

ISIS detains 3 ISIS troops for arguing

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State has jailed three of its leaders for attempting to dissent with the group, local sources said Thursday as the group braces for further battles with government forces.

“Forces from Daesh (Islamic State) carried out raids today at Bab al-Toub and al-Dawasah, and arrested three of its leaders,” the source told Alsumaria News. They are all Nineveh locals, including an assistant to the group’s official on mosques.

“Initial information available regarding the reasons for the arrests denote that the detainees were accused of attempting to break with the group,” said the source.

Since the Iraqi government launched an offensive in mid October to retake Mosul from Islamic State, the extremist group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground. It has also bee stricken with divisions and infighting, with reports of attempted dissent and executions of delinquent fighters growing.

Recent reports have said that the idea of dishonoring the pledge of allegiance to the group’s supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, have become on the table as Baghdadi’s whereabouts or survival proved to be questionable.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a recent interview with France 24 that his government was aware of Baghdadi’s location, and that he had lost many of vital leaderships around him.

Iraqi troops recaptured eastern Mosul on January 24th after three months of battles, and are awaiting government orders to invade the IS-held west.

9 total die in rocket attacks in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Rockets launched by Islamic State militants on Thursday killed a school student in eastern, while other rockets from a yet unknown source killed eight in the west.

Shafaaq News website quoted medical and security sources saying a student was killed and five others were wounded by rockets launched on al-Muthanna district in eastern Mosul.

Iraqi troops recaptured eastern Mosul from IS on January 24th after three months of battles, but the extremist group had used to attack areas it lost to security forces, leading to security and civilian deaths on several occasions. Security generals said recently they foiled several attempts by the militants to cross the Tigris River into eastern Mosul to carry out attacks against the forces.

In western Mosul, Anadolu Agency quoted local and medical sources saying eight civilians were killed and 16 others were wounded when rockets launched from the security-controlled eastern region landed on a popular marketplace.

Mohamed Gamal, a resident of Bab al-Toub, told the agency that several mortar missiles landed on the dense area, leaving casualties and destroying several stores.

Since retaking eastern Mosul, Iraqi government forces have been awaiting orders from the supreme military command, headed by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, to invade IS strongholds in western Mosul.

2 ISIS operators die in small arms attack in Salahuddin

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) A local source in Salahuddin Province revealed that two members of the Islamic State were killed in an attack launched by an armed attack in Sharqat, north of the province, Alsumaria News reported on Thursday.

The source said, “Two members of the Islamic State, riding a motorcycle in an agriculture road in Sharqat were killed, today, by an armed attack launched by unidentified gunmen.”

“The Islamic State mobilized its members in the area of incident, which is considered the first of its kind since many months,” the source added.

Noteworthy, Islamic State group is still controlling many areas in the district of Sharqat.

ISIS abducts 385 fleeing Hawija

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The self-proclaimed Islamic State group abducted 385 persons fleeing from Hawija District, southwest of Kirkuk, a source told Alsumaria News on Thursday.

The source said, “Members of the Islamic State abducted 260 persons near Dhibat Village, while moving toward Maktab Khalid area, southwest of Kirkuk.”

“The terrorist group also abducted 125 persons near Haml Village in Hamrin,” the source added. “These persons were fleeing from Hawija District, southwest of Kirkuk, and were abducted for leaving the land of caliphate and collaborating with security forces,” the source explained.

“The Islamic State took the abductees to the center of Hawija District,” the source further added.

Noteworthy, Hawija District, in addition to the areas of Rashad, Riyad, Abbasi and Zab are still under the control of the Islamic State.

Woman in Kohat gunned down by relative for working
[DAWN] A woman was bumped off in Kohat's Astarzai area last Friday allegedly by a relative who objected to her working outside the home, police said.

Her relatives attempted to keep the incident hidden, a family member told DawnNews, but a First Information Report was lodged after reports of the murder began circulating on social media.

District Police Officer (DPO) Kohat Javed Iqbal said the woman, Hina Shahnawaz, had been shot four times allegedly by her cousin Mehboob Alam, who did not approve of her working.
Summary: The husband approved, but a cousin did not, and killed her. What a lovely culture.
Shahnawaz had been working at a non-governmental organization in Islamabad and was earning Rs80,000 a month, which she used to support her widowed mother and sister-in-law after her father and brother passed away, the DPO said.
Then bravely runs away.
Updated summary: With no other support on offer for the three-woman household, particularly from the cousin, our heroine went to work for a reputable charity. Preferring that they all starve to death genteely, the cousin kills her, condemning the rest to a slow death. Even more lovely.
Alam fled after allegedly killing his cousin, DPO Iqbal said, adding that the police are conducting a search operation in the area to find him.

Pa. ex-con in castration case arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot judge
[PHILLY] A transgender woman who spent time behind bars for a botched castration that led to the death of her sixth husband was locked away
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
this week after she allegedly threatened to shoot a Westmoreland County, Pa., judge, according to news reports and police.
Any information at all is too much information.
Tammy L. Felbaum, 58, of Seward, in southwestern Pennsylvania, entered the Westmoreland County Courthouse on Monday morning, placed her purse on the baggage X-ray equipment, then made comments that "she had guns and an Uzi and a rocket launcher in her purse," County Park Police Chief Kirk Nolan said Wednesday.

Tammy Felbaum, charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct, after allegedly threatening to shoot a Westmoreland County judge on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017.

As she walked through the scanner, she told another officer, "I came here to shoot a judge," Nolan said.

He said officers searched her purse and did not find any weapons. Felbaum told police she was only kidding about her threats, Nolan said. He said she did not name a specific judge.

Felbaum nonetheless was charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. She was being held Wednesday at the Westmoreland County Prison on $100,000 bail.

In February 2001, Felbaum botched a castration on her husband, James, at their home in Marion Township, Butler County, about an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported. Authorities alleged that James Felbaum choked to death on his vomit after he took or was given painkilling drugs following the crude surgery. James Felbaum, 40, died at a hospital in Grove City on Feb. 25, a day or two after the operation.

At her nonjury trial in December 2001, Tammy Felbaum claimed her husband had castrated himself. But the judge found her responsible and convicted her of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and unauthorized practice of medicine. She was sentenced to 5½ to 11 years in state prison.

A state trooper who had interviewed Tammy Felbaum said she denied taking part in her husband's castration, and said she told him she had "an interest in medicine" and "had castrated bulls in the past," the AP reported.

The trooper had said that Felbaum told him she had argued with her husband after he returned from a drug rehab clinic and she thought he was cheating on her, the AP reported.

Felbaum was born Thomas Wyda in Uniontown, but underwent a sex-change operation in 1980 after self-castration, according to news reports.

After being released from prison in her husband's death, Felbaum maintained that she did not kill her husband, according to an interview she gave to WPXI-TV. "My husband died from complications of a drug overdose, not complications of any surgery. I did not kill my husband. ... It’s a minor surgery," she told the TV station. She also said she had performed the surgery on her first husband.

#4  It's a complex story. [She} made comments that "she had guns and an Uzi and a rocket launcher in her purse," It is no surprise they didn't find these in her purse. Now, if Felbaum had a razor or Mohel knives in her purse, I'd worry if I were the judge--particularly since she was not very skillful. I'm only surprised this case didn't somehow turn into a discrimination case against transgenders in today's society.

Mosul Offensive News

Iraq douses oilfield fires at Qayyara

(Reuters) Five oil wells are still burning out of 25 that Islamic State set on fire in Qayyara, south of Mosul, an oil ministry statement said on Thursday.

State-run North Oil Company crews are working to control the fires torched by the hardline militants to slow down the advance of U.S.-backed Iraqi forces toward Mosul, their last major city stronghold in Iraq.

The oil field was one of the main sources of revenue for the group that declared in 2014 a self-styled ”caliphate” in parts of Syria and Iraq.

Islamic State used to ship at least 50 tanker truckloads a day from Qayyara and nearby Najma oilfields to neighboring Syria. A sign remains on the main road announcing prices of crude in places like the Syrian city of Aleppo, 550 km (340 miles) west of Qayyara.

“The smoke hurts our children, hurts us and, as we get older, it’s only going to cause us more problems,” Reuters quoted Sarhan Misin, 20, who works in a sweet shop just off Qayyara’s main road, as saying in a report about Qayyara in January.

Reuters quoted a doctor at the local hospital, asking not to be named for fear of reprisal by Islamic State, saying he had seen many more patients with respiratory problems in recent months, though was not able to give numbers.

ISIS judge dies in airstrike in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Kurdistan Region’s Security Council announced on Thursday, that a Kurdish official of the Islamic State group was killed by an airstrike in al-Zinjili area in the city of Mosul.

The Council said in a press statement, “The international coalition aircraft targeted the Islamic State’s Judicial Official, also known as Waleed Sarhan al-Kurdi (Abu Ali al-Kurdi) in the area of al-Zingili, in western Mosul, killing him, along with four of his bodyguards.”

“Kurdi was the Islamic State’s Judicial Official in the area of Tel Kaif, northeast of the city of Mosul,” the statement further added.

According to informed sources, nearly 500 Kurdish youths joined the Islamic State group between 2013 and 2014, after capturing Mosul.

Iraqi security officials detonate car bomb in al-Intsar neighborhood

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Ministry of Defense’s War Media Cell announced on Thursday detonating a car bomb in the eastern side of the city of Mosul.

The cell said in a press statement, “Detachments of the Military Intelligence Directorate seized a booby-trapped vehicle that was prepared to target civilians, and detonated it in al-Intsar neighborhood in Mosul.”

In January 25th 2017, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced liberating the eastern side of Mosul from the Islamic State completely, while security forces are carrying out an offensive to liberate the western side.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A bomb blast in southern Baghdad killed one civilian and wounded two others on Thursday, while the dead body of a security servant was found in the west, according to security sources.

Newly-wed woman lured and gang-raped in Takhar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A newly-wed bride was lured and gang-raped by a group of men in northeastern Takhar province of Afghanistan.

The 20-year-old woman whose identity has not been disclosed was raped by a group of at least three men after she eloped from her husband’s house.

Provincial governor’s front man Sanatullah Temori confirmed the incident.

The victim has said she was lured by the perpetrator, Jamshid, and was encouraged to elope due to domestic violence she was facing in her husband’s house.

According to the woman, Jamshid gang-raped her together with his two other friends and left her outside the provincial women’s affairs directorate where she is currently in government’s shelter. She also added that the men kept her as hostage in a house for a period of almost four weeks in Taloqan city.

This comes as the rate of violence against women is sharply on the rise across the country. Cases of domestic violence against women as well as murder of the women by the anti-government armed Lions of Islam have been routinely reported from various provinces during the recent months.
