German police raid 16 homes of suspected Islamic extremists
[NY Post] German police are searching 16 homes of alleged Islamic extremists in central and western Germany.

Frankfurt prosecutor Nadja Niesen said Thursday that authorities were acting on the suspicion that the extremists were planning an attack. Niesen said she could not give any further details because the searches were still ongoing.

Authorities raided 15 homes Thursday morning in Ruesselsheim, Biebesheim and Raumheim in the state of Hesse as well as one home in Kerpen in North Rhine-Westphalia

Russian medicine arrives in Venezuela as Maduro blocks US aid
[Hurriyet] As tensions in Venezuela mount ahead of a Feb. 23 showdown over humanitarian aid, Russian state news agencies said on Feb. 20 that a Russian shipment of medicine and medical equipment had arrived in Venezuela.

The reports did not give the size of the shipment or say what it contained, though they cited a diplomatic source as saying the delivery was made under the aegis of the World Health Organization.

Hours earlier President Nicolas Maduro had said 300 tons of medicine and other aid was on its way from Russia.

Russia is an ally of President Maduro, who is under challenge from opposition leader Juan Guaido in a resurgence of the country’s political crisis.

Guaido has called for "caravans" of tens of thousands of Venezuelans to join forces on Feb. 23 to carry the U.S. aid from Colombia into Venezuela, despite Maduro’s objections and the barricading of a key bridge linking Venezuela and the Colombian border city of Cucuta, where the aid is stored.

Armed Forces Day celebrations underway in Cape Town
[The South African] South Africa celebrates Armed Forces Day on 21 February in remembrance of the SS Mendi tragedy which occurred more than a century ago.

In 1917, a military frigate, carrying 616 South Africans belonging to the Native Labour Contingent, was struck by calamity en route to assist the British War effort. Approximately 19 kilometres South of the Isle of Wight, a cargo ship three times the size of the SS Mendi, the SS Darro, collided into the troopship. Daro survived the collision and continued onto Argentina – the Mendi sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking with it 616 South Africans and 30 crew members.

Venezuelans Fleeing Crisis Face Desperate Trek Via Leather Cadilacs to 12,000 Feet
[NYT] PAMPLONA, Colombia ‐ The walking began before dawn: before the clouds broke against the mountaintops, before the trucks took over the highway, even before anyone in the town woke up to check the vacant lot where scores of Venezuelan refugees had been huddling through the night.

Children, grandmothers, teachers, nurses, oil workers and the jobless had all sprawled there together ‐ bound by a collective will to put as many miles as possible between themselves and the collapsing country they had fled.

All but Yoxalida Pimentel. She could not take another step.

"After so many hours of walking, after days, nights, sun, cold, rain ‐ I lost my baby," she said, crying alone the morning after her miscarriage.

The economic crisis that has engulfed Venezuela under President Nicolás Maduro has set off a staggering exodus. The economic damage is among the worst in Latin American history, researchers say, with more than three million people leaving the country in recent years ‐ largely on foot.

US sanctions are 'terrorist act', says Iranian President Rouhani
[France24] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday relations with the United States had rarely been so bad and that sanctions imposed by the Trump administration targeting Tehran's oil and banking sectors amounted to "a terrorist act".

Animosity between Washington and Tehran - bitter foes since Iran’s 1979 revolution - has intensified since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from an international nuclear deal with Tehran last May and reimposed sanctions lifted under the accord.

"The struggle between Iran and America is currently at a maximum. America has employed all its power against us," Rouhani was quoted as saying in a cabinet meeting by the state broadcaster IRIB.

"The U.S. pressures on firms and banks to halt business with Iran is one hundred percent a terrorist act," he said.

Trump has reimposed the sanctions with the aim of slashing Iranian oil sales and choking its economy in order to curb its ballistic missile programme and its activities in the Middle East, especially in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Former Swiss officer Johan Cosar on trial for fighting IS
[BBC] Johan Cosar went to Syria not to fight for the Islamic State group, but against them. Now, the former Swiss army officer is facing a military tribunal back home.

He is charged with joining a foreign army and thus undermining Switzerland's neutrality and security. Mr Cosar makes no attempt to hide his actions and remains proud of them.

"The law forbids fighting for a foreign force," an army spokeswoman said. "Who that force actually is, is irrelevant."

Mr Cosar was born in Switzerland, and is a Swiss citizen. But his grandparents have Syrian roots, and the Cosar family are members of the Syriac Christian community.

Now 37, he says he originally travelled to Syria to work as a freelance journalist, but when he saw that Islamist groups were advancing on Christian communities he felt he had no choice but to defend them.

He helped to found the Syriac Military Council, recruited for it, and readily shared the military skills he had learned in the Swiss army, among them weapons training and setting up checkpoints. At the height of the fighting, he was in charge of more than 500 men.

Congressmen to State Department: We Need to Classify Drug Cartels As Terrorists
[Townhall] Republican Congressmen Chip Roy (TX) and Dr. Mark Green (TN) believe Mexico's drug cartels should be classified as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO), according to Breitbart. The two Republicans plan to send a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asking for the declaration.

"Cartels are the problem and it is time we started acting like it. These cartels undermine our national security with a relentless attack on our border while trafficking in human beings and dangerous narcotics," Rep. Roy said statement. "Cartels are endangering American citizens, our Mexican neighbors, and the migrants who seek to come here. I am proud to join my friend Rep. Mark Green to urge the State Department to consider designating them as a Foreign Terror Organization."

The specific cartels Reps. Roy and Green want to be considered FTOs include:

• The Reynosa/Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel
• The Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas
• The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, an offshoot of the Sinaloa Cartel

Breitbart's Brandon Darby has followed border related issues for years. He explained why these various cartels deserve to receive the FTO classification:

Billionaire, Globalist, Rent-Seeking Kock Bros. Fight Trump Economic Agenda
[Breitbart] The pro-mass-immigration Koch brothers’ network of billionaire, donor-class organizations is fighting President Trump’s economic nationalist agenda ahead of the 2020 election with efforts to give amnesty to illegal aliens and a campaign for free trade absolutism.

While Trump scores victories from his tariffs on Chinese imports and imported aluminum and steel, and from the increased interior enforcement of immigration, the Koch network of organizations ‐ including Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Partners, and the Libre Initiative ‐ is looking to crush the populist-nationalist gains with an unpopular economic libertarian agenda.

On the immigration front, the Koch-funded Libre Initiative brought illegal aliens, who were shielded from deportation by former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, to Washington, DC, last week to lobby vulnerable lawmakers to support a DACA amnesty.Gla

VDH - 'The New Nihilism'
[VDH Private Papers] As the 2020 election nears, there is as yet no coherent Democratic response to the Trump agenda. If Trump himself is unpopular and polarizing, his agenda is for the most part in sync with a majority of Americans who like the 3% annualized GDP growth; near-record peacetime unemployment; record natural gas and oil production; young, scholarly and constructionist justices; pro-Israel Mideast politics; and realism about NATO laxity, the flawed Iran Deal, and the Paris Climate Accord, Chinese mercantilism, and the past inability of the U.S. to translate battlefield victories abroad into lasting security and strategic advantages.

Yet hatred of Trump himself, as well as fear of a successful Trump agenda, has unhinged his opposition. From 2017-19, progressives sought to abort the Trump presidency through furor at his person and often pathetic attempts to invoke the Emoluments Clause, the 25th Amendment, the Logan Act, Articles of Impeachment, the Mueller special counsel investigation, former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe’s counter-intelligence investigation of Trump, and cherry-picking federal justice to stay Trump initiatives. All failed. Now the Left has decided to offer not just invective, but a new array of alternatives‐often of a radical sort that we have not seen or heard about since the 1960s.

The Democratic Party is now in the hands of newcomer establishment figures such as Senators Corey Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Mazie Hirono; socialist Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; newly elected representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib; and activists like Linda Sasour, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, and the usual Hollywood celebrities‐all of whom Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and former Vice President Joe Biden futilely try to appease.

New York Air National Guardsman accused of impersonating CIA agent to impress woman
[Stars and Stripes] CICERO, N.Y. (Tribune News Service) ‐ A New York man who police have accused of impersonating a CIA agent to impress a woman works for the New York Air National Guard as a drone camera operator, according to a New York Air National Guard spokesman and an Air Force website.

Staff Sgt. Ryan R. Houghtalen, 25, was charged with second-degree impersonation of a public servant, a misdemeanor, according to court records.

After showing the woman a fake CIA ID, Houghtalen told the woman how he was currently targeted by terrorists.

"He was telling her his job as a CIA agent is very dangerous," said New York State Police spokesman Jack Keller. "He was hoping to use that information to start a relationship with her."

Houghtalen told the woman he met at church that, because he was a CIA agent, both he and her were targets of ISIS, according to court documents.

[Spectrum.ieee] The commercial space business has blossomed over the past decade. Two companies, though, have grabbed the spotlight, emerging as the most ambitious of them all: Blue Origin and SpaceX.

At first glance, these two companies look a lot alike. They are both led by billionaires who became wealthy from the Internet: Jeff Bezos of Blue Origin earned his fortune from Amazon.com, and Elon Musk of SpaceX got rich initially from Web-based businesses, notably PayPal. Both companies are developing large, reusable launch vehicles capable of carrying people and satellites for government and commercial customers. And both are motivated by almost messianic visions of humanity’s future beyond Earth. This coming year, we’ll likely see some major milestones as these two titans continue to jockey for position.

Over the past few years, SpaceX has become one of the most active launch companies on the planet. In 2018 alone, SpaceX performed 21 launches, representing about 20 percent of roughly 100 worldwide launches.

The company stands out in another way‐it’s the only one to recover and reuse its rockets. Landings of its Falcon 9 first stages have gone from being novelties, often with explosive failures, to a routine aspect of most missions. Last May, SpaceX introduced its latest version of the Falcon 9, called the Block 5, the first stage of which is designed to be flown 10 or more times.

Although the Falcon 9 will be SpaceX’s workhorse for years to come, the company added a new vehicle to its stable three months before introducing the Block 5. Last February, the company launched the first Falcon Heavy, which includes three Falcon 9 first stages lined up in a row. The Falcon Heavy is capable of placing more than 60 metric tons into low Earth orbit, far more than any existing launch vehicle can accomplish.

But even the Falcon Heavy pales in comparison with what SpaceX is now developing, a vehicle that until recently was called the Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR. (The R-rated interpretation of that acronym wasn’t lost on the rocket’s developers, who initially used it as the informal code name for the project.) In late November, Musk announced a name change for the BFR‐to Starship for the crewed upper stage, and Super Heavy for the lower booster stage. That booster will have 31 of the company’s Raptor engines, which are under development, while Starship will be outfitted with seven Raptor engines. Both stages are intended to be reusable, and Starship will be able to carry dozens of people to destinations far beyond Earth orbit.

SpaceX has modified the design of this colossal vehicle a couple of times since conceiving it in 2016. The most recent version was described at a press conference this past September at the company’s California headquarters. This version, Musk said, would be able to place 100 metric tons on the surface of Mars, provided that the spaceship’s upper stage was refueled in Earth orbit before departing for the Red Planet.

"I think it looks beautiful," he added, noting the similarity to a fictional rocket ship of graphic-novel fame. "I love the Tintin rocket design, so I kind of wanted to bias it towards that."

Speaking in early September at an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, SpaceX’s chief operating officer, Gwynne Shotwell, said that the company will begin making the first "hop tests" of the BFR’s upper stage (Starship) in late 2019.

Blue Origin, by contrast, has yet to launch anything at all into orbit. But the company has similarly big ambitions. It’s working on a rocket it calls New Glenn (named after John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth), which is scheduled to launch for the first time in 2021. The two-stage rocket will be able to place 45 metric tons into low Earth orbit, with its first stage designed to land on a ship at sea and be reused up to 25 times.

"We’re in build mode right now," said Bob Smith, CEO of Blue Origin, during a space policy workshop in Washington, D.C., this past October. The company has completed a new 70,000-square-meter (750,000-square-foot) factory for constructing the rocket just outside the gates of the Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, and it’s currently building a testing and refurbishment facility nearby, which is expected to be completed in early 2019. Blue Origin is also modifying a dormant launchpad at nearby Cape Canaveral for its operations and has signed up several commercial customers for New Glenn.

Socialists are Nothing More Than Parasites
[Victory Girls] President Trump’s State of the Union address, as well as his speech at Florida International University today, hit back hard against the sludge-covered wave of socialist thought that has infested parts of our country. It was a big, glorious middle finger to the likes of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib ‐ a bold statement of defiance informing these socialists that their dream of a Marxist plague will not happen.
"And to those who would try to impose socialism on the United States, we again deliver a very simple message: America will never be a socialist country," Trump said toward the end of his speech in Miami on Monday.

This is exactly the type of rebellion we need in the US today, as a cancerous scourge of socialism tries to attach itself like so many pubic lice to the life source of our nation. Those unwilling to put in the effort to support themselves and to succeed are voting for politicians who will steal from their neighbors at the point of a government gun, while at the same time working to disarm those from whom they steal to ensure a "peaceful" transfer of wealth.

I’m thrilled that Donald Trump is standing up to these parasites, and brazenly telling them their dream is not going to happen, because the wholesale condemnation of those who have achieved economic success in this country is worrisome.

Men and women who have studied, worked, taken risks, and bled to achieve what only a few could are being condemned as parasites and told they shouldn’t exist.

Whoa Nellie! Bruce Ohr Passed On A Third Trump Dossier From His Wife To The FBI
[Red State] Prior to his role as a liaison between Trump dossier author Christopher Steele and the FBI, Bruce Ohr held the fourth highest position at the Department of Justice. Once his involvement with Fusion GPS (where his wife worked) became known to top DOJ officials, he received two demotions because "DOJ ethics regulations forbid department officials from working on cases where a spouse has a financial interest." Ohr admitted he had been aware of this rule at the time.

Ohr’s wife, Nellie Ohr, was hired as an independent contractor by Glenn Simpson, the founder of political opposition research firm Fusion GPS. As you all know, the DNC and the Clinton campaign hired Fusion GPS (by funneling funds through Washington, D.C. law firm Perkins Coie) to create the infamous Trump dossier. Fusion hired former British spy Christopher Steele to create the dossier. Steele and Nellie Ohr worked on the project together.

It is well known that Bruce Ohr played a key role in passing Steele’s unverified research to top level FBI officials including Andrew McCabe starting in July 2016. In August, he passed on an even sketchier Trump dossier, which had been prepared by Glenn Simpson, to the FBI.

The Hill’s John Solomon has just reported the existence of a third Trump dossier which had been created by Nellie Ohr. Naturally, Bruce Ohr delivered this document to the FBI as well.

This new information was revealed during Bruce Ohr’s closed door hearing before Congress last August. Although transcripts from this hearing have not been made public, the relevant portion has been leaked. Below are the key excerpts from Ohr’s testimony.

Blackface, KKK hoods and mock lynchings: Review of 900 yearbooks finds blatant racism
h/t Instapundit
[USAToday] The old yearbook photos capture the lighthearted moments from college worth remembering ‐ smiling faces, pep rallies and cans of cheap beer.

But tucked in and among those same pages are pictures of students dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes and blackface, nooses and mock lynchings, displays of racism not hidden but memorialized as jokes to laugh about later.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, a stunning number of colleges and university yearbooks published images of blatant racism on campus, the USA TODAY Network found in a review of 900 publications at 120 schools across the country.
IMO, it was people

FBI's top lawyer believed Hillary Clinton should face charges, but was talked out of it
[The Hill] For most of the past three years, the FBI has tried to portray its top leadership as united behind ex-Director James Comey’s decision not to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for transmitting classified information over her insecure, private email server.

Although in the end that may have been the case, we now are learning that Comey’s top lawyer, then-FBI General Counsel James Baker, initially believed Clinton deserved to face criminal charges, but was talked out of it "pretty late in the process."

The revelation is contained in testimony Baker gave to House investigators last year. His testimony has not been publicly released, but I was permitted to review a transcript.

During questioning by Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas), Baker was unequivocal about his early view that Clinton should face criminal charges.

"I have reason to believe that you originally believed it was appropriate to charge Hillary Clinton with regard to violations of law ‐ various laws, with regard to mishandling of classified information. Is that accurate?" Ratcliffe, a former federal prosecutor, asked Baker.

Baker paused to gain his lawyer’s permission to respond, and then answered, "Yes."

Bangladesh fire: Blaze kills dozens in Dhaka historic district
[BBC] A fast-moving fire swept through a historic district of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, killing at least 78 people, officials say.

The blaze broke out at night in a residential building that had flammable material stored on the ground floor.

Members of a bridal party are thought to be among the victims. It is not yet clear what started the fire.

The centuries-old Chawkbazar district has narrow streets and buildings very close to each other.

Large building fires are relatively common in densely populated Bangladesh, owing to lax safety regulations and poor conditions. Hundreds of people have been killed in recent years.

On Sunday, a fire in a slum in the coastal city of Chittagong killed at least nine people.

Germany: Horst Seehofer sets terms for repatriating 'Islamic State' foreign fighters
[DW] Some 40 imported muscle who fought for "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
" and are in detention in Syria reportedly have German passports. Germany's conservative interior minister has said they can only return under strict conditions.

Germany will only take back "Islamic State" imported muscle and their families if they can prove their identities and they do not pose a serious security threat, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has said.

"In the interest of the security of our country, the German government must set out conditions for the return of former IS fighters who have German citizenship," he told the Wednesday edition of the Suddeutsche Zeitung.

German authorities would also need to review each individual case before anyone boarded a plane for Germany, to find out whether the former fighters are wanted in another country.

The conservative minister said he was not interested in repatriating imported muscle if they are suspected of carrying out serious offenses.

"I would not want to take in dangerous persons if we cannot guarantee that we can, for example, detain them again here because they are wanted with an arrest warrant," he said, adding that the wives and children of fighters would not receive a "blank check" either.

TRUMP THREATENS TO RELEASE FIGHTERS
Germany and other European countries have been debating the repatriation of imported muscle since a recent demand by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
that more than 800 fighters detained in Syria be returned and prosecuted.

Trump has threatened to release the fighters, who are currently in Kurdish detention, if they are not repatriated.

Critics say it would be difficult to prosecute the fighters without witnesses or evidence of crimes committed in Syria.

STATES WANT MORE
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, a member of Seehofer's Christian Social Union party, wants IS fighters with German passports who did not commit any crimes under German law to nonetheless be closely monitored.

"Should we not be able to provide proof [of criminal activity], we have to closely monitor the IS returnees with round-the-clock surveillance," Hermann told the Passauer Neuen Presse newspaper.

Thomas Strobl, the interior minister for Baden-Wurttemberg, argued that returnees who have another passport besides their German one should lose their German citizenship.

"Those who serve in foreign forces lose their citizenship. That should especially apply for German krazed killers," Strobl said to German tabloid Bild.

ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED
Some 40 fighters in Kurdish detention are believed to have German passports, according to the dpa news agency. German authorities have reportedly issued arrest warrants for 18 of them.

Despite misgivings, Seehofer said Germany should on principle be prepared to take back fighters and their families who meet the conditions.

"We expect the whole world to take back asylum-seekers who have come to Germany and committed crimes here or are considered a security threat," he said.

"We cannot say in return: We won't take back these people."

Lawfare: Muslim group seeks congressional probe on US terror watchlist
[IsraelTimes] Lawsuit reveals government shares terrorist watchlist with more than 1,400 private entities, including hospitals and universities, even though it says it does not.

A Moslem civil rights group called for a congressional investigation Wednesday after its lawsuit revealed that the US government has shared its terrorist watchlist with more than 1,400 private entities, including hospitals and universities.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations
... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ...
said Congress should look into why the FBI has given such wide access to the list, which CAIR believes is riddled with errors. Broad dissemination of the names makes life more difficult for those who are wrongly included, CAIR says. Many on the list are believed to be Moslem.

"This is a wholesale profiling of a religious minority community," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. "To share private information of citizens and non-citizens with corporations is illegal and outrageous."

An FBI spokeswoman had no immediate comment Wednesday.

The council filed a class-action lawsuit in 2016 challenging the list’s constitutionality and saying those wrongly placed on it routinely face difficulties in travel, financial transactions and their dealings with law enforcement.

In response to the lawsuit, a federal official recently acknowledged in a court filing that more than 1,400 private entities received access to the list.

For years, the government had insisted that it did not generally share the list with private organizations.

The watchlist, which contains hundreds of thousands of names, is supposed to include only known or suspected terrorists. Critics say it is wildly overbroad and mismanaged. The government’s smaller no-fly list is culled from the watchlist.

A hearing is scheduled in federal court for Friday on CAIR’s request that the government now detail exactly which entities have received access to the names. CAIR also wants to know what private organizations are doing with the watchlist information ‐ whether, for example, it is influencing universities’ admissions decisions or is being used by hospitals to screen would-be visitors.

In depositions and in court hearings, government officials had denied until very recently that the watchlist compiled by the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center is shared with private entities. At a hearing in September, government lawyer Dena Roth told US District Judge Anthony Trenga that the Terrorist Screening Center "does not work with private partners, and that watchlist status itself ... is considered law enforcement sensitive information and is not shared with the public."

Despite that assurance, the judge ordered the government to be more specific about how it disseminates the watchlist. Trenga said the plaintiffs are entitled to the information to try to prove their case that inclusion on the list causes them to suffer "real world consequences."

In response to the judge’s order, TSC Deputy Director of Operations Timothy Groh filed a statement earlier this month acknowledging that 1,441 private entities have received permission to access the watchlist.

Groh said those entities must be in some way connected to the criminal justice system. He cited police forces at private universities, hospital security staff and private correctional facilities as examples.

He said private groups are expected to abide by a detailed set of rules designed to ensure the list is used properly. It is not clear what those restrictions are.

The exact number of people on the list is kept secret by the government, but it acknowledged in an earlier lawsuit that it adds hundreds of thousands of names every year. It also emphasized that names are routinely removed.

Faiza Patel, a director at the New York University law school’s Brennan Center for Justice, said the government’s willingness to share the list with private organizations is problematic because the list has so many people who are wrongly included in the database.

"When you tag someone as a terrorist it can have serious consequences for people," she said.

Int’l coalition: 5,200 American soldiers stationed in Iraq
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ The U.S.-led international coalition said on Wednesday that the average number of American troops currently deployed in Iraq amounts to 5,200 members, adding that their mission is to train Iraqi security forces and hone their combat skills.

terror group, said that the American troops in Iraq are mainly tasked with providing logistic support and training for the Iraqi troops to help them in the fight against IS bad boys.

Ryan further pointed out that the international coalition will withdraw its troops from Iraq if requested by the Iraqi government.

"There are no U.S. bases in Iraq, only trainers and advisers," Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Iraq Joey Hood told news hounds on Tuesday.

Hashd militiamen impose ‘illegal’ customs checkpoint in Sharqat
[Rudaw] Gunmen tied to the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitia have set up a checkpoint in Sharqat, south of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, where they are taxing truck drivers, a local official confirmed to Rudaw, adding security forces are unable to stand against the Shiite group.

"There is a security checkpoint in Sharqat run by Hashd al-Shaabi, forcibly taking taxation from people," Ali Dahduh, the mayor of Sahrqat, told Rudaw. "Whoever passes by the checkpoint, they will be taxed."

Dahduh said he contacted Joma Inad, commander of the Saladin Operations, but he said they had no authority over the Hashd al-Shaabi.

"I have informed all parties of the Hashd al-Shaabi checkpoint on the Sharqat four sided road forcing commuters into paying them taxes. I am ashamed when officials and MPs from Karbala and Hilla call me complaining that their trucks were stopped at the Sharqat four sides road," he said.

Taxation varies depending on the load the trucks carry, Dahduh said.

"Some trucks are taxed with 10,000 dinars and some other $1000," he said.

"They say they are associated with the Hashd al-Shaabi security. They do not have a particular leader," he added.

Footage sent to Rudaw shows a large number of trucks queued up at the checkpoint.

"They are told if they do not pay taxes, they will not be allowed to move," Chia Salih Mustafa, an accountant at a company based in Zakho, told Rudaw English.

Mustafa said the firm's drivers were "initially told that they would have to pay $300, and later they increased it to $1,000."

"Since they were not ready to pay any amount, they have now increased the taxation to $1,500," he added.

The Iraqi parliament earlier this month described any customs points taking taxation as illegal.

Sharqat briefly fell to ISIS during the group’s rampage across a third of the country before it was liberated by Iraqi forces in September 2016.

Snopes Fact Checks the Babylon Bee
Actor Jussie Smollett was embroiled in a controversy in February 2019 after he told police he had been assaulted on the streets of Chicago in a possible hate crime. While law enforcement was looking into these claims, rumors circulated that the Empire actor had orchestrated the attack.

On 18 February 2019, the Babylon Bee website added their own fictional twist to this story when they published an article reporting that Smollett had been offered a job at the CNN.

The network, according to the Babylon Bee, was reportedly impressed with Smollett's ability to fabricate a story out of thin air:

While Empire actor Jussie Smollett has been having a tough week so far, there appears to be a silver lining: cable news channel CNN has offered Smollett a job as an investigative reporter and on-air anchor after witnessing his skills at fabricating a story entirely out of thin air.

CNN producers were reportedly impressed throughout the ongoing saga of Smollett's apparent hoax attack on himself. They realized early on the facts didn't add up but were fascinated with how well the actor kept the narrative going. An HR rep quickly reached out to Smollett to see if he'd be interested in taking on a position at the news organization after news broke that the entire thing was probably fabricated.

This was not a genuine news story, although some readers mistook it for such. The Babylon Bee is a satirical website whose disclaimer notes that "The Babylon Bee is Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire."

Britain
British ISIS bride stripped of citizenship after begging to come home, Banglas reject also - maybe Holland?
More on this story from yesteday.
[NYPOST] The UK on Tuesday revoked the citizenship of the British teenager who ran off to join ISIS in 2015 and begged to be allowed home last week for the sake of her baby, according to a report.

The British Home Office broke the news in a letter sent to the family of 19-year-old Shamima Begum and obtained by ITV News.

"Please find enclosed papers that relate to a decision taken by the Home Secretary, to deprive your daughter, Shamima Begum, of her British citizenship," the letter reads. "In light of the circumstances of your daughter, the notice of the Home Secretary’s decision has been served of file today (19th February), and the order removing her British citizenship has subsequently been made."

The letter goes on to say that Begum has the right to appeal the decision.

Her family’s lawyer, Tasnime Akunjee, said his clients were "disappointed" by the government’s decision and were "considering all legal avenues to challenge the decision."

Begum was 15 when she and two other students at the Bethnal Green Academy in East London skipped town and traveled to Syria to join the terrorist group.

Last week, she declared that she wished to return home for the sake of her child, who was born Sunday in a Syrian refugee camp.

"I’m not the same silly little 15-year-old schoolgirl who bravely ran away from Bethnal Green four years ago. And I don’t regret coming here," the heavily pregnant Begum told the UK Times last week.

"I feel a lot of people should have sympathy for me, for everything I’ve been through. You know, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I left," she added in an interview with Sky News Sunday, where she sat with her newborn.

"I was hoping that maybe for the sake of me and my child they let me come back. Because I can’t live in this camp forever. It’s not really possible."
The Times of Israel adds that Bangladesh doesn’t want her either:
Begum was on Wednesday facing the prospect of being stateless after Britannia revoked her citizenship and authorities in Bangladesh, where her family is from, said they would not take her in.

It was reported that she could be eligible for automatic citizenship in Bangladesh, where her mother is believed to be from, but the foreign ministry in Dhaka rejected this.

"She is a British citizen by birth and has never applied for dual nationality with Bangladesh," it said. "It may also be mentioned that she never visited Bangladesh in the past despite her parental lineage. So, there is no question of her being allowed to enter into Bangladesh."

DUTCH HUSBAND
She had earlier told ITV News that Britannia’s decision was "unjust", but said she might consider applying for citizenship in The Netherlands. Her husband, an IS fighter believed to be held by Kurdish forces in Syria, is Dutch.

"Maybe I can ask for citizenship in Holland," said Begum. "If he gets sent back to prison in Holland I can just wait for him while he is in prison."

The Dutch authorities refused to comment but experts said Begum stood little chance of being accepted because she would have to satisfy a stringent list of requirements.

Her family’s lawyer, Tasnime Akunjee said he was "considering all legal avenues to challenge" Britannia’s decision.

Interior minister Sajid Javid told lawmakers Wednesday that revoking citizenship was “a powerful tool” not used lightly.

“But when someone turns their back on (our) fundamental values and supports terror they don’t have an automatic right to return to the UK,” he said.

He has previously said that more than 100 individuals had already been deprived of their British citizenship.

CHILDREN SHOULD NOT SUFFER
Javid noted on Wednesday that international law that means Britain can only do this if it will not leave the person stateless, if they are a dual national or “in some limited circumstances they have the right to citizenship elsewhere”.

Javid hinted that Begum’s newborn son — her third child, after her previous son and daughter died in recent months — could be treated differently.

“Children should not suffer, so if a parent does lose their British citizenship it does not affect the rights of their child,” the minister said.

Begum appealed to British authorities to show “compassion” by allowing her to raise the baby in Britain. But she inflamed public opinion back home by saying in her first interview with The Times last week that she had no regrets about joining the jihadists. In her latest BBC interview, she expressed more remorse.

“I was hoping Britain would understand I made a mistake, a very big mistake, because I was young and naive,” she said.

Iraq
Iraq sends troop reinforcements to Syria border to block ISIS retreat
Hammer and anvil, bay-bee!
[Rudaw] Baghdad has deployed troop reinforcements to Iraq’s border with Syria to block a potential ISIS retreat from the Syrian village of Baghouz, where the jihadists are making their last stand against the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said his government is monitoring the border and the situation closely.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry announced Tuesday that reinforcements have been sent to "secure" the border.

Infantry brigade 37 of the 9th armed division has been sent to the Iraq-Syria border to guard the area from the Euphrates River to al-Qaim, Anbar province.

The brigade is "reserve and backup" for the forces already stationed there, the Defense Ministry said.

"The aim is the total protection of the Iraq-Syria border to prevent the infiltration of ISIS terrorist gangs onto Iraqi soil," the statement added, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

"Concerning the border strip, all military sectors are in a position of total readiness. All weapons, machinations and vehicles are available as a precaution against some ISIS snuffies who have run away to cross or sneak into Iraq," a brigadier general of the Jazira Operations Command said in a video released by the Defense Ministry on Tuesday.

"The heroes of the second division of infantry brigade 27 continue fortifying and solidifying the observation points," an army colonel added.

Iraq’s National Security Council held a meeting chaired by PM Abdul-Mahdi on Tuesday to examine the condition of Iraq’s counterterrorism forces on the border.

The council will "monitor the border strip to prevent any infiltration cases onto Iraqi soil," according to a readout from the PM’s office. The council passed the "Strategy of Fighting Violent Extremism Leading to Terror."

In his weekly presser on Tuesday night, Abdul-Mahdi said: "We are examining the situation and follow intensely what is going on."

"We will wait until tomorrow to see if there are really efforts to finish things whether ISIS surrenders or fighting will resume. In all cases, Iraq is interested in this. Many of these [ISIS] fighters are Iraqis," he said.

Iraq is "wary" of ISIS fighters crossing into Iraq, but the group has already suffered a "very heavy blow" on the border, the PM added.

ISIS snuffies are making their last stand against the SDF in the village of Baghouz in Syria’s east.

The SDF says it will defeat the group in a matter of days, but its efforts to protect civilians held by the group have slowed its final push.

ISIS RESURGENCE?
On Monday, an unnamed US military official told CNN that more than 1,000 ISIS fighters have "likely" fled to Iraq’s mountains and deserts carrying with them up to $200 million in cash in the last 6 months.

Haider al-Abadi, Iraq’s former prime minister, declared the defeat of ISIS in Iraq in November 2017. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the defeat has only been territorial. ISIS snuffies have reverted to their older, pre-’caliphate’ insurgency tactics of hit-and-run, IEDs, and kidnappings.

On Tuesday, the Abbas Combat Division, a Shiite paramilitary group, announced on its Facebook page that its medic teams had helped the Nakhib Police Center in Anbar transfer the bodies of six civilians murdered by ISIS snuffies in the mostly-desert province bordering Syria.

Hussein al-Aakidy, mayor of Rawa, told Iraqi channel al-Ayyam TV on Tuesday that five civilians kidnapped last Thursday in al-Haditha district in Anbar had been rescued from ISIS by Iraqi Security Forces.

According to a statement from the Security Media Center of Iraq’s Interior Ministry, quoted by state media, 12 individuals were kidnapped in Nakhib while looking for desert truffles. A search and rescue operation is ongoing.

On February 8, the bodies of three more Iraqis kidnapped by ISIS in the Makhoul mountain range in Saladin province were also discovered.

Mohammed al-Halbousi, the speaker of the Iraqi parliament who is originally from Anbar, condemned the killing of civilians. In a statement on Wednesday, he urged the public not to trek deep into desert areas where they could become "easy prey for terrorists."

IDF raids West Bank refugee camp in crackdown on rock throwing
[IsraelTimes] Troops arrest 17 suspects in overnight operations, escort 2,000 worshipers to Nablus holy site; soldier lightly injured by stones.

In a crackdown on stone throwing overnight, the Israeli military raided the al-Aroub Paleostinian refugee camp in the central West Bank, arresting five people suspected of attacking a nearby highway, the army said.

Wednesday’s predawn raid sparked riots in the refugee camp, with residents throwing rocks and concrete blocks at the Israeli troops, injuring one of them lightly, the military said.

The maimed soldier received medical treatment and was released home to recuperate, the Israel Defense Forces said.

"The operation was part of a wider preventative effort being conducted to end the throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails, and to allow safety on the roadways," the military said in a statement.

Though the West Bank has been relatively calm in recent months following a spate of terror attacks at the end of last year, the ruling Paleostinian Authority has threatened that widespread violence could again break out should Jerusalem go through with plans to withhold approximately NIS 500 million ($138 million) in PA tax funds that Israel says would be used to pay bandidos faceless myrmidons and their families.

In addition to the five people placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
in the al-Aroub raid, IDF troops detained 12 other suspects in overnight operations across the West Bank on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, the army said.

The suspects were believed to have taken part in terrorist activities, rock-throwing and other forms of low-level violence against Israeli troops and civilians, the IDF said.

The 17 people arrested were handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning.

In pre-dawn raids, Israeli security forces also found two locally produced makeshift firearms, known as Carlo submachine guns, the military said.

The weapons were found in the village of Shuweika in the northern West Bank, the army said.

The Israel Police, which took part in the Shuweika raid, said a large number of bullets and gun parts were also found and confiscated.

"Illicitly owned weapons are used to carry out terror attacks, crimes and violent acts. Therefore, the Israel police and other security forces will continue in the determined and unending fight to bring down the number of firearms possessed illegally," the police said in a statement.

In addition to the arrest raids, the Israeli military on Wednesday also escorted some 2,000 Jewish worshipers to the Joseph’s Tomb pilgrimage site in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, the army said.

During the visit, residents of the area hurled rocks at the Israeli troops, the military said.

No soldiers were maimed.

IDF soldiers arrested three of the rioters, the army said.

Nine executed in Egypt over assassination of prosecutor-general in 2015
[AlAhram] Egypt's Prisons Authority executed on Monday nine prisoners convicted of assassinating Egyptian prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat in 2015.

Egypt's court of cassation upheld the death sentence for the prisoners in November 2018, rejecting an appeal against the sentence.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
the court did commute the sentence of six other prisoners from death to life in prison. It also sentenced 15 defendants to life in prison, eight defendants to 15 years, and 10 others to 10 years.

The defendants in the case were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and the possession of explosives devices.

In June 2015, Barakat was killed in a Cairo kaboom that struck his convoy in the upscale eastern Cairo district of Heliopolis.

A holy warrior group calling itself the "Popular Resistance" grabbed credit for the bombing. A court in February 2017 designated the group a terrorist organization.
The Times of Israel adds:
Egypt on Wednesday executed nine suspected Moslem Brüderbund members convicted of involvement in the 2015 liquidation of Egypt’s top prosecutor, security officials said.

Death sentences were also handed down in July 2017 to 13 defendants tried in absentia. They will be eligible for a new trial if they surrender or are captured.

Oregon Legislators Push To Lower Voting Age To 16
[THEGATEWAYPUNDIT] "It’s time to lower the voting age in Oregon and to give our young people a chance to participate in the ballot, about their decisions that affect their homes, their clean air, their future, their schools and as we’ve seen, their very lives," Fagan said.
Why? I thought adults were supposed to make decisions about such things?
The state senator pointed to the young activists who became engaged after the Parkland shooting in Florida, which left 17 people dead. They proved young people are active and should have a right to vote, Fagan said.
The fact that they were active doesn't mean their reactions were correct. Monkeys are very active.
Several teenagers spoke in favor of the measure alongside Fagan on Monday at the Capitol.
They were being "active," natch.
"Why can I drive like an adult, pay taxes like an adult, have an abortion like an adult, be charged and sentenced like an adult, but I can’t vote like an adult?" asked Christine Bynum, a student at La Salle High School.
In some states you can't drive like an adult at sixteen; there are restrictions, such as Cinderella licenses. In the ones where you can, you pay increased insurance rates commensurate with the increased rates at which you make poor decisions. You can still be claimed as a dependent for taxes like an adult. You're not allowed to sign contracts or to own property. There's a separate juvenile court system that theoretically only kicks the most egregious butt holes into the adult system. Having an abortion is your own damned business, but the fact that you might need one at age sixteen doesn't say much for your good sense.
"We’re experts of our own experiences," said Connor Gabor.
That's a statement with no meaning at all. The child probably heard somebody say that in a movie.
People are being sexually assaulted in their schools, Gabor said.
By teenagers.
People are being shot. Yet, they can’t vote for school board members or politicians, he said.
Neither can the shooters, can they?
Senate Republican Leader Herman Baertschiger, Jr., R-Grants Pass, said 16-years-old is too young to vote.
Thank you for that thundering statement of the obvious.
"... (They) are too young to enlist in the military, too young to own firearms, too young to own property, too young to enter into legal contracts, and too young to get married. But they are old enough to vote? People are not legally considered adults in this country until they are 18 years old, and I believe they shouldn’t be able to vote until then either. This is nothing more than an attempt to expand the voter rolls to sway elections," he said.

#7  (1) They want them to vote before the high school brainwashing has worn off (2) Young folks don't vote in significant numbers as is, even younger are unlikely to improve the trend so this is just stupid (3) There is some logic to having a single date for adulthood, when you can drive, drink, vote, and serve in the military. I vote for 18. Although perhaps we can allow provisional driving (as they currently do) and voting at the local level (dog catcher and mayor) at only 16.

Iraq
Kirkuk: In the plains of northern Iraq, familiar shadows roam and kill
[Rudaw] As dusky evening shadows gradually melted into the darkness that embraced the northern plains around the agricultural hamlet of Taq Taq in November, a group of men clad in Iraqi federal police uniforms emerged from their hiding places and headed towards a nearby house.

There was nothing suspicious about the men except the Iraqi police hardly venture out at night and are often confined to their barracks.

The farmers in the hamlet were happy that once again they could plough and smell the soil, after three years of brutal war between the Peshmerga and ISIS turbans, which left much of the area around oil-rich Kirkuk in ruins.

The Washington Post sued by family of Covington Catholic teenager
More about this story from yesterday.
[OUTLINE] The family of the Kentucky teen who was involved in an encounter with a Native American advocate at the Lincoln Memorial last month filed a defamation lawsuit against The Washington Post on Tuesday, seeking $250 million in damages for its coverage of the incident.

The suit alleges that The Post "targeted and bullied" 16-year-old Nicholas Sandmann in order to embarrass President Trump. Sandmann was one of a number of students from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky who were wearing red "Make America Great Again" hats during a trip to the Mall when they encountered Nathan Phillips, a Native American activist.

News accounts, including in The Post, and videos of their encounter sparked a heated national debate
... an expenditure of personal wind at the national level that leads to face-making and other histrionics but can't be shown to have ever solved an issue ...
over the behavior of the participants.

"In a span of three days in January of this year commencing on January 19, the Post engaged in a modern-day form of McCarthyism by competing with CNN and NBC, among others, to claim leadership of a mainstream and social media mob of bullies which attacked, vilified, and threatened Nicholas Sandmann, an innocent secondary school child," reads the complaint.

It added, "The Post ignored basic journalist standards because it wanted to advance its well-known and easily documented, biased agenda against President Donald J. Trump by impugning individuals perceived to be supporters of the President."

The suit was filed by Sandmann’s parents, Ted and Julie, on Nicholas’s behalf in U.S. District Court in Covington. It seeks $250 million because Amazon chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos paid that amount for the newspaper when he bought it in 2013.

The lengthy complaint, which carried the names of five attorneys from two law firms, alleged seven "false and defamatory" articles published online or in print by The Post. It also cited tweets sent by The Post to promote its stories.

The Sandmanns’ lead attorney is L. Lin Wood, who represented Richard Jewell, the security guard falsely accused in the bombing of Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta in 1996. He also represented John and Patsy Ramsey in pursuing defamation claims against media outlets in connection with reports on the death of their young daughter, JonBenet.

A Post spokeswoman, Kristine Coratti Kelly, said in response to the suit, "We are reviewing a copy of the lawsuit, and we plan to mount a vigorous defense."

According to the allegations made in the complaint, Nicholas Sandmann and his classmates were waiting for a bus at the Lincoln Memorial after attending the March for Life rally on the Mall when a group of African American men who call themselves Hebrew Israelites began yelling racial epithets at them. The high school group began a series of school sports chants in response, the complaint said.

Phillips, a self-described Native American activist who was on the Mall that day for the Indigenous Peoples March, has said he was walking toward the Lincoln Memorial when he encountered the Covington group. He was chanting and beating a small drum when he came face to face with Sandmann.

The Sandmanns’ suit asserts that the newspaper "bullied" Sandmann in its reporting "because he was the white, Catholic student wearing a red ’Make America Great Again’ souvenir cap."

It calls Phillips "a phony war hero [who] was too intimidated by the unruly Hebrew Israelites to approach them, the true troublemakers, and instead chose to focus on a group of innocent children."

It added that The Post "did not conduct a proper investigation before publishing its false and defamatory statements of and concerning Nicholas."

It also accused The Post of ignoring online videos that showed a fuller picture of the incident and of using "unreliable and biased sources," thus acting with "knowledge of falsity or a reckless disregard for the truth." A plaintiff must show that a defendant acted with "reckless disregard" to sustain a defamation action.

America's Socialist Revolution has officially begun
[SovereignMan] On October 31, 1517, an obscure German theology professor put the finishing touches on a paper he had written about the current state of the Catholic Church, and sent it off to Archbishop Albert of Brandenberg for review.

The professor’s letter was polite and professional, with a formal tone that one might find in a modern academic work. It could hardly be described as revolutionary.

Yet within a few years, the professor would find himself excommunicated by the Pope, branded an outlaw and heretic and living in hiding under the protection of an army of followers.

His name, of course, was Martin Luther. And the publication of his famous paper, the 95 Theses, is often viewed as the start of the Protestant Reformation, one of the most important social movements in history.

The reformation was a European-wide rejection of Church authority. But its origins far predate Luther or his 95 Theses.

Mini revolts against the Church go back to the late 1300s, more than 150 years earlier.

But historians often focus on a single watershed moment to mark the beginning of a major movement or trend, even though there are always multiple events leading up to it.

There have been several watershed moments recently that future historians might view as the start of this modern Socialist Revolution… including possibly today with Bernie Sanders announcing his 2020 presidential bid.

But I think a less obvious choice would be when Amazon surrendered to the Socialists last week over its proposed headquarters in New York City.

Amazon’s expansion into New York would have brought 25,000 well-paying jobs to the city, plus state-of-the-art green construction, $10+ billion in tax revenue, land for a new school, a tech and art incubator, etc.

In exchange, the city government would give up some tax credits that were completely trivial by comparison.

But… the Socialists couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

They were disgusted that a behemoth like Amazon, headed by the richest man in the world, would receive any benefits whatsoever.

Multiple arson balloons launched from Gaza; IDF hits Hamas post in response
[IsraelTimes] Balloon attacks follow Tuesday’s incendiaries that sparked a fire, burning grasslands in Eshkol region; IDF says one of its aircraft hit launch area.

Arson balloon attacks continued for a second day on Wednesday, as at least three balloons launched from the Gazoo Strip landed in Israel or went kaboom! en route, according to one Gazoo-bordering local council.

In response, IDF aircraft fired at a group of Paleostinians launching the incendiary devices, the Israeli military said Wednesday evening, calling the target a Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", post from which the airborne devices were launched.

No injuries were reported in the strikes east of the el-Bureij refugee camp in central Gazoo.

A large bundled cluster of balloons carrying a cardboard model of a drone landed in a field in the Eshkol region on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the local council said. It was one of the largest airborne devices to reach Israel from the Paleostinian territory in months.

Police sappers were called to remove the drone, the Eshkol spokesperson said.

A short time earlier, another balloon with a suspected bomb was found in an agricultural field in the Eshkol region, which borders Gazoo, the local government said.

Police sappers were called to the scene and removed the device.

Also Wednesday, a balloon from Gazoo went kaboom! in the air nearby. It is not clear what caused the airborne kaboom, though it appears to have been something other than the balloon itself, as the sound was heard by fieldhands working nearby.

Earlier, a security guard outside a kindergarten in the village of Amikam shot several bullets at a balloon passing by the kindergarten in an attempt to bring it down before it reached the facility. Police units who reached the scene discovered it was an ordinary balloon and posed no danger to the surroundings.

The spate of arson balloon launches followed a Gazook balloon launch on Tuesday that sparked the first brush fire in southern Israel in months. The blaze burned grasslands in a wooded area outside the community of Kibbutz Kissufim in the Eshkol region. It was quickly extinguished, according to the Israel Fire and Rescue Services.

A second blaze that was sparked in the Eshkol region around the same time was found to have been an intentional controlled burn, and not the result of a Paleostinian incendiary device, according to the fire department.

In addition, a helium-filled condom with a suspected bomb attached to it was found outside another community in the Eshkol region.

Israeli arms makers unveil new bunker buster and suicide drone in India air show
[IsraelTimes] The ’Rocks’ air-to-ground missile billed as a cost-effective weapon to destroy protected underground targets; the Mini-Harpy can stay in air for 2 hours before flying into a target.
The missile for Iran’s centrifuge banks, and the kamikaze drone for Hizb’allah’s missile caches?
Israeli defense contractors unveiled two weapons systems during a trade show in India this week: a new "bunker buster" air-to-ground missile and a small "kamikaze drone."

The government-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems showcased its new air-to-surface standoff missile, dubbed "Rocks," at the Aero India Air Show in Bangalore, India.

"Equipped with either a penetration or blast fragmentation warhead, the missile can destroy above-ground or well-defended underground targets in heavily surface-to-air-defended areas," the company said in a statement.

According to Rafael, Rocks uses GPS and an inertial navigation system to navigate in flight and homes in on its target using optical systems and "advanced image processing algorithms, which ensures hitting targets with great precision, overcoming GPS jamming or denial."

The company said its new long-range missile is both "cutting edge and cost-effective," and utilizes existing, "combat-proven" technologies.

At the same air show, the Israel Aerospace Industries weapons maker also unveiled its Mini-Harpy loitering missile ‐ what is commonly referred to as a kamikaze or suicide drone.

The Mini-Harpy, like its larger counterpart, flies over an area until a target is spotted. The drone, which carries an eight-kilogram (17.6-pound) warhead, is then directed to fly straight into the enemy object, where it explodes on impact.

This type of small kamikaze drone has been identified as a possible weapon Israel could use against Syria’s powerful S-300 air defense system, which Israeli officials have said the military would destroy if it were used against Israeli fighter jets.

Its small size makes it easier for field or naval units to launch the Mini-Harpy and it is cheaper than the larger alternatives, the company said in a statement.

"It can be launched from land, marine and helicopter borne platforms, providing complete independence in intelligence collection for an updated situational picture and closing the attack circle at low cost," IAI said.

In total, the Mini-Harpy weighs 45 kilograms (100 pounds), can remain in the air for approximately two hours and has an operational range of 100 kilometers (62 miles), according to the firm.

This model is far smaller than the Harpy, which carries a 32-kilogram (70-pound) warhead. The Harop, another suicide drone made by IAI, has a 23-kilogram (51-pound) warhead and a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).

The Mini-Harpy can spot targets using video footage, which it sends back to an operator. Multiple Mini-Harpies can be used in tandem, IAI said.

"The loitering missiles are launched towards the target area. They loiter the sky until the threat is detected. Upon detection, the systems locks in on the threat and attacks it for a quick, lethal closure," the government-controlled company wrote in a statement.

Alyssa Milano Has Meltdown Over Jussie Smollett Possibly Perpetrating Hate Crime Hoax
[DAILYWIRE] Actress-turned-full-time political activist Alyssa Milano is having a hard time with reports indicating "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett might have staged the hate crime attack that he claimed was carried out by two white Trump supporters.

On Sunday, Milano took to Twitter to voice her amazement that Smollett’s dubious account of the hate crime was potentially bogus.

"If that man staged his own attack he is wrong in so many ways," posted the actress. "No one could be that hurtful? To stage this? Right?"

Milano continued: "To f*** with all of us by playing into our weaknesses & make it even harder for victims to come forward?! No one could choose to be that hurtful? Right?! RIGHT?"

SDF fight to retake final ISIS holdout in Syria’s Baghouz – reports
[Rudaw] Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are fighting to retake the village of Baghouz in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, which would liberate the final stretch of territory controlled by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the SDF reached a deal with ISIS in Baghouz.

Earlier, AFP saw 15 trucks leaving the village thought to be carrying women and kiddies. Rudaw news hounds in Syria confirmed the convoy carried 1,500 civilians to camps.

However some fighting continues. Adnan Afrin, a SDF spokesperson told AFP "there are sporadic and limited festivities on some axes".

The US operation tweeted it can't confirm if ISIS fighters are surrendering, but "the most hardened ISIS fighters still remain in Baghuz."

Locals are anxiously awaiting a future free of ISIS where the self-governing TEV-DEM in Rojava find a solution with Damascus and end militarization in their cities.

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria — The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been surrounding ISIS in its last holdout which is being pounded on the ground and from the air.

“The ISIS terrorist organization is now sealed off in a small area. They’re surrounded in an area of 600-700 meters. ISIS is using civilian residents as a human shield. This is why we advance slowly. We don’t want civilians killed. We also have prisoners under ISIS. So far we have freed 10 of our own prisoners,” a SDF fighter told Rudaw.

On Wednesday, it is increasingly apparent that soon a declaration of the total defeat of ISIS will come.

“For three days we’ve been advancing. They hit back to stop our advance. I was hit in the arm by a shrapnel. But ISIS is finished. They have no force left,” said an SDF fighter.

Thousands of civilians, mainly women and children, have fled the last battlefield. Most of those fleeing are foreign nationals.

“Here we receive the refugees. There are 45 people here right now. Sometimes it reaches 400 in a day. But in total we have registered 28,000 so far. We have Iraqis, Syrians, and others. But the people of Baghuz are few. Maybe 5 percent,” said a worker at a camp.

They trickle from different directions into SDF-controlled areas.

“We tried to get out of there many times, but they didn’t let us. They had placed mines everywhere. Our neighbors fled but they stepped on landmines and lost their legs,” said one IDP.

Qamishli residents would welcome Damascus deal – if it brings security
[Rudaw] Faris Kemal points to the jagged gashes in the tin awning over his market stall, laden with colorful fruit. They’re bullet holes left over from festivities between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces, he explained.

These two sides have largely avoided conflict over the last eight years, but the scars that mark Kemal’s shop are clear evidence of the tensions which occasionally erupt into festivities.

Kemal, 46, has been selling fruit in this bustling market in central Qamishli for 33 years. In December 2011, a frontline in the Syrian conflict was established about 200 metres from his stall. The regime put up barriers around a pocket of security and administration buildings in the northern Syrian city that is governed by the self-autonomous Kurdish administration.

Gunfire has broken out near his shop several times over the years, said Kemal.

One skirmish was sparked when regime forces tried to conscript young men from the Kurdish-controlled side into the Syrian Arab Army. Kurdish authorities demanded the young men’s release. The regime refused and a fight ensued.

Another time, the regime attempted to expand its territory, one street at a time, but was rebuffed by the Asayesh (Kurdish security).

The Kurdish administration ‐ threatened with Ottoman Turkish attack as the United States prepares to pull its troops out ‐ may now have to strike a deal with its sometime-adversary.

"We will be obliged to agree a deal with the regime so that it deploys its troops along the border and protects us," Aldar Khalil, head of foreign relations for the governing TEV-DEM coalition in northern Syria, told AFP in a recent interview.

They would have clear conditions that include maintaining autonomy and having their own forces manning the borders, he added.

In the Qamishli market, people are ready for a deal and to see their city returned to normal.

The city blocks held by the regime are clearly marked with Syrian flags and large, sun-bleached posters of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
. Sandbags and blast walls line the fortified entrances. Other streets are completely blocked off.

Cars and cycle of violences are not able to enter the regime-held streets. Pedestrians crossing the barricades are searched.

"I want to see the barriers come down," said Kemal, who is ready for the war to end. "We hope one day this will be done."

He does not, however, want to see Assad regain control. Assad’s government, and that of his father Hafez before him, has discriminated against the Kurdish population for decades, depriving them of fundamental rights including citizenship.

"The regime never does anything good for us and we don’t accept them," said Kemal.

Another nearby vendor disagrees, arguing that security was much better under Syrian regime control, before the country descended into conflict and into the grip of rival gangs.

It was safer when the regime controlled everything, said Mohammed, who did not want to give his full name. He is hopeful security will be restored in northern Syria with the return of rule from Damascus.

He does not want a return to business as usual, however.

Before the war when the area was under regime control "we didn’t have money," Mohammed said, noting the widespread poverty afflicting Kurdish areas. It is a problem that has not been fully addressed the self-autonomous administration, which charges hefty fees for space in the market, he added.

Whether power lies in Damascus or with the Kurds, what Mohammed wants most of all is "a government that will work for the people."

And it’s not just Qamishli’s Kurds who feel this way. Abu Omar, an Arab friend of Mohammed, agrees.

"We have experienced many governments," said Omar. "But no one cares about us."

Nigeria's Boko Haram kills 14 loggers
[AlAhram] At least 14 people were killed when Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadists attacked loggers in northeastern Nigeria, members of a militia force told AFP Wednesday.

The group came under attack on Monday in Koshebe forest, 10 kilometres (six miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, militia leader Babakura Kolo said.

The assailants were supporters of a long-time factional leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau
... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ...
, he said.

"We have recovered a lotal of 14 bodies from the scene of the attack and we are still looking for four more," Kolo said.

"We recovered nine bodies yesterday (Tuesday) and five more this morning," said militiaman Mohammed Asheik, who was among the search team combing the bush for bodies.

Four other wood-cutters are missing and presumed killed, he said.

The loggers, who were in the forest to cut firewood, came from Lawanti village in Jere area, which the jihadists have previously targeted.

The bodies were scattered over a large area because the jihadists pursued the loggers and gunned them down as they fled, said Kolo.

Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted farmers, loggers and herders, accusing them of passing information on the group to soldiers and the pro-government militia fighting them.

Last month, four farmers were killed as they worked near Molai village, five kms outside Maiduguri.

Abbas rejects all tax revenues from Israel after cabinet withholds terror funds
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
is rejecting all tax revenue payments transferred to it by Israel, in response to Jerusalem withholding over $138 million of the revenues over Ramallah’s payouts to Paleostinian attackers and their families.

Earlier this week, the security cabinet okayed implementing a law passed last year allowing Israel to withhold funds used to pay the stipends from taxes Israel collects on the behalf of the PA.

According to Rooters, Paleostinian officials say Israel collects and transfers NIS 803,282,580 ($222 million) to the PA every month.

PA officials have condemned Israel for withholding the money, arguing it amounts to "piracy" of Paleostinian funds.

Israeli officials have defended the security cabinet’s decision, arguing that the PA’s payments incentivize violence and terrorism.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen Enlists Aid of Central Americans To Help Curb Caravans
[Seattle Times] U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday that Central American nations have agreed to do more to stop migrant caravans and fight transnational crime.

Nielsen spoke in El Salvador’s capital during a meeting with her Central American counterparts to discuss a regional security plan to fight illegal human trafficking, organized crime and gangs, and expand intelligence sharing and fortify border security.

She said the region is facing a humanitarian and security crisis, adding that "I want to thank my colleagues for their determination to increase cooperation with respect to caravans."

She called on security ministers from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras "to show a bold leadership to stop the formation of new caravans."

In recent months thousands of Central Americans have moved in caravans toward the U.S. border. Those in the caravans repeatedly say they are fleeing violence and poverty and hope to apply for refugee status in the United States.

"The caravans are a new phenomenon," Nielsen said. "We are working together to understand their purpose, their plans, and make sure that those who are vulnerable contained within them are protected."

That was an apparent reference to migrants bringing children along on the caravans, in part because U.S. authorities have to quickly release them.

Democrats, media burned by rush to judgment on Jussie Smollett
[WASHINGTONTIMES] For Sens. Kamala Harris
Former Oakland mayor Willie Brown's former mistress, now a senatrix from California and 2020 Dem presidential hopeful...

... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
looked like a horrible yet opportune talking point.

Instead, the apparent hoax is turning out to be a warning to 2020 Democratic candidates about singling out people for martyrdom, including the woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh of sexual assault and the drum-banging American Indian who confronted Catholic high school students on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

In the rush to speak too soon about the Smollett case, Ms. Harris and Mr. Booker stand out.
Hey, no problem. Run on out there and JUMP on that toe popper, it's got your name written all over it !
Just before noon on Jan. 29, news reports emerged on social media that Mr. Smollett, an actor on the TV show "Empire," had been attacked by two men yelling racial and homophobic slurs. He claimed the men said something about "MAGA country," suggesting they were Trump supporters.

Mr. Smollett said the two men put a rope around his neck.

Five hours after the initial report, Ms. Harris, a former Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, attorney general, pronounced the attack genuine and called it "an attempted modern-day lynching."

#6  Democrats, media burned by rush to judgment on Jussie Smollett

...Nah. It'll be memory holed within a week or two. The media will see to that PDQ. And anybody who brings it up will be firmly reminded that the real issue here is shut up.

#7  Neh, they don't have to - they just have to encourage Youts to be Youts, and hope this time the wrong man they push too far will be more Aryan than Zimmerman.

They may have finally found their guy. Although, the timing is a bit suspicious as it comes so soon after Smollett's story fell apart.

Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani from a hotel in Islamabad, DawnNewsTV reported citing officials from within the bureau.

The arrested speaker has left Islamabad and is enroute to Karachi, in the custody of three NAB officials.

According to NAB officials, Durrani faces an inquiry for accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income as well as allegations that he had embezzled public funds.

NAB officials told DawnNewsTV that the bureau waited for Durrani to leave Sindh before making the arrest as Durrani is escorted by his sizable security team in his home province and the bureau feared a confrontation would turn violent.

Riyadh ready to share intelligence with New Delhi': MBS in India
[DAWN] Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in a joint statement issued during his day-long visit to India on Wednesday described terrorism and extremism as a common concern and said that Riyadh is ready to share intelligence with New Delhi to tackle these issues.

Prince Mohammad arrived in Delhi on Tuesday night, a day after wrapping up a historical visit to Islamabad in which he signed $20 billion worth of agreements in the "first phase" of Saudi investment in Pakistain.

His visit to Pakistain came days after the Pulwama attack in Indian Kashmiree ─ which India has blamed on Pakistain and the latter has denied ─ and the subject of "cross-border terrorism" was expected to come up during his interactions with top Indian leadership today.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is under pressure to act in the wake of the Pulwama attack, particularly since he is looking to contest an election in the coming months.

Modi in his joint statement today described the Pulwama attack as "a symbol of the anti-humanitarian threat the world is facing", Times of India reported.

The News Agency that Dare Not be Named quoted Modi saying ─ without naming Pakistain ─ that "in order to deal effectively with this threat, we agree that there is a need to increase all possible pressure on countries supporting any type of terrorism."

Mozambique arrests another journalist in jihadist-hit north
[AlAhram] Mozambique authorities have detained a journalist working in a northern region that has been rocked by a jihadist insurgency, a media watchdog said Wednesday, the third such arrest in as many months.

Germano Daniel Adriano, who works for a local radio and television broadcaster, Radio e Televisao Macomia, was jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on Tuesday, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said in a statement, giving no further details.

MISA expressed "serious concerns about this wave of arbitrary arrests, including the involvement of the military in interrogations that take place in the absence of lawyers".

Amade Abubacar, who works for the state-owned Comunitaria Nacedje de Macomia radio and television in northern Cabo Delgado province, has been detained since January 5 on charges of espionage.

Abubacar was seized by police at a bus stop while conducting interviews and taking photographs of people fleeing Death Eater attacks.

In December, the military arrested internationally-acclaimed investigative news hound Estacio Valoi in the same province, but released him without charge two days later.

Since October 2017, Islamist fighters have terrorised remote communities in the gas-rich, Moslem-majority Cabo Delgado region, killing around 200 people and forcing thousands from their homes.

Macomia is one of the areas worst hit by the insurgency.

Rights groups have accused security forces waging the fight against the jihadists of serious abuses, including summary executions and arbitrary detention.

Two vehicles fitted with explosives for use against security forces were also destroyed in the raid, the statement added.
