Iran Hacks Into CENTCOM, Crashes MQ-9 Reaper Drone (video)
[FARS via Zero] Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh revealed on Thursday that several American unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) flying above Syria and Iraq were remotely commandeered by the Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

"Seven to eight drones that had constant flights over Syria and Iraq were brought under our control and their intel was monitored by us and we could gain their first-hand intel," General Hajizadeh said in the Western Iranian city of Hamedan on Thursday.

Fars News Agency published a three-minute video taken on several different occasions by UAVs. Half of the content shows a General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper hacked by IRGC electronic warfare forces, then flown into the ground. The last segment of the video shows an American air strike targeting the crashed UAV.

The footage below shows IRGC’s penetration into United States Central Command, could be seen as evidence that supports General Hajizadeh’s claims.

#7  Yes but remember Iran has one of our Stealth drones (which Bin Obama did nothing to recover or destroy).

WASHINGTON — The stealth C.I.A. drone that crashed deep inside Iranian territory last week was part of a stepped-up surveillance program that has frequently sent the United States’ most hard-to-detect drone into the country to map suspected nuclear sites, according to foreign officials and American experts who have been briefed on the effort.

Using innocent school children as props, Sen. Feinstein tells Green People to shove it
[Townhall] On Friday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) earned the adoration of some prominent conservatives for pretty much telling a bunch of kids and their parents to pretty much go shove it when it comes to the Green New Deal. Yes, the parents were using their kids as pawns and the group who confronted the California Democrat, the Sunrise Movement, who are pushing lawmakers to back Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) ruinously expensive Green New Deal.

It will cost trillions based on raw estimates, which is the reason why the plan doesn’t have a price tag or tax increase projections. It calls for updating ALL U.S. buildings to be energy efficient, knocking down those, which cannot be saved, transitioning away from fossil fuels within ten years, and culling farting cows. Oh, and the plan includes economic security for those who are "unwilling to work." It’s a whacky left-wing adventure that is nothing but a recipe to destroy the country. Even labor unions aren’t too keen on it. So, how did this confrontation go down? Well, from Sunrise’s perspective, the senator told them to get lost, portraying her as an establishment snob. It’s quite hilarious, though. And folks you’d thought would never like anything Feinstein does, Erick Erickson and Ben Shapiro, became "fans" overnight (via USA Today):

Rise of the Warrior Monk
BLUF:
[National Review] If I’ve noticed the "warrior monk" archetype emerging in society, that’s because I’ve noticed it emerging in myself. Yet nothing is quite so disillusioning as vowing to drop out of society only to find that it is actually a trend, and thus simply another aspect of society. After all, as the Victorian novelist George Moore put it, "No man is greater than the age he lives in."

Gender roles have been in a state of confusion for some time, and we’ve been down this primordial path before. During the ’90s drum-beating, group-hugging "men’s movement," Jungian analyst Robert Moore and mythologist Douglas Gillette published a still-widely-admired tome called King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering The Archetypes Of The Mature Masculine. In the bearded duo’s chapter on the warrior, they write how channeling this archetype makes personal relationships assume secondary importance to a man’s spiritual path. "The psyche of the man who is adequately accessing the Warrior is organized around his central commitment," they write. "This commitment eliminates a great deal of human pettiness. Living in the light of lofty ideals and spiritual realities such as God . . . so alters the focus of a man’s life that petty squabbling and personal Ego concerns no longer matter much."

With healthy diets, strong bodies, and vital energy retained via abstention from pornography, as well as higher consciousness honed through meditation, ritual, and perhaps even old-fashioned Christianity, what might be the character arc of these manly social dropouts?

-Lurid Crime Tales-
The 25th Amendment Talk Isn't The Real Scandal. The Spygate Coup Attempt Is
[The Federalist] Last week when Andrew McCabe launched his Orange Man Bad tour, he stunned the public with claims that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein suggested using the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office. Reaction on the hill came quickly, with Sen. Lindsey Graham calling the claim "beyond stunning."

Graham, the new chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, promised an investigation, telling CBS’s "Face the Nation": "There’s an allegation by the acting FBI director at the time that the deputy attorney general was basically trying to do an administrative coup, take the president down [using] the 25th Amendment process. The deputy attorney general denies it. I promise your viewers the following: that we will have a hearing about who’s telling the truth, what actually happened."

But the supposed consideration of the 25th Amendment shouldn’t be the focus of the outrage. After all, that amendment, which allows the vice president plus a "majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide" to declare the president "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office," is part of our constitutional system. Its stringent requirements for removing a president ensure it cannot be used to execute a soft coup by political opponents.

The true scandal is not the swirling gossip that Rosenstein mentioned the 25th Amendment, but what has been front and center for more than two years: It’s the dossier, stupid!

It’s the dossier, its funding, its creation, and its use. It’s the leaks, the sabotage by political appointees and career DOJ and FBI agents, the media’s complicity, and the triggering of a special counsel, all with the end goal of removing the duly elected president by pressuring Trump to resign or face impeachment.

Alveda King: ‘Delighted' Trump Restricted Funding to Planned Parenthood, Founded by ‘KKK Adviser' Margaret Sanger
[Breitbart] Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., recalled Margaret Sanger’s ‐ founder of Planned Parenthood ‐ racist and eugenicist politics in a Friday interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with host Rebecca Mansour and special guest host Rick Manning.

Manning and Mansour asked King to address the Trump administration’s Friday issuance of a rule regarding federal taxpayer funding of family planning. The new rule, issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), could block about $60 million of federal government funding for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

"I was absolutely delighted, because now the regulations are being addressed and we are really seeing clearly where some of the money that Planned Parenthood gets from our tax dollars comes from," remarked King.

Sayyafs threaten to execute 3 hostages
[MindanaoExaminer] Abu Sayyaf militants, whose group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, have threatened to execute two Indonesian and a Malaysian hostages, being held captive in southern Philippines is ransoms are not paid in exchange for their lives, Malaysian media reports said.

It said militants, who spoke in Bahasa Malaysia, released a video clip which showed the Indonesian hostages – believed to be Heri Ardiansyah, 19, and Hariadin, 45 – being guarded by gunmen. The Malaysian hostage, Jari Abdulla, 24, was not with the duo.

The captives, their eyes covered with black cloth and hands tied behind their back, made an emotional appeal for their government to save them. One militant even held a bolo on the neck of Hariadin as he spoke to the camera in forested area.

The video, reports said, surfaced several days after Abu Sayyaf gunmen phoned Jari’s wife, Nadin Junianti, saying that no Malaysian authorities or negotiators have contacted them to secure her husband’s release.

The gunmen said that her husband would face difficulties if there was no contact from Malaysia. They also asked her for telephone contacts of Malaysian journalists. Nadin has appealed to Malaysian authorities to help secure her husband’s release. She said it was second time the kidnap group had contacted her.

Malaysian media did not say how much ransoms the Abu Sayyaf is demanding for the safe release of the hostages. The militants are believed to be holding nearly a dozen captives, mostly foreigners. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah has said that they were working with their Philippines counterparts to secure the hostages’ release. The hostages were kidnapped at sea off Sandakan in Sabah on December 5, 2018.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea's Kim Jong Un: I don't want my children to bear burden of nuclear arms
[AsiaOne] North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
told the US Secretary of State he did not want his children to live with the burden of nuclear weapons, a former CIA officer involved in high-level diplomacy over the North's weapons was quoted as saying on Saturday (Feb 23).

Mr Kim made the rare personal comments to Mr Mike Pompeo during a visit to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, in April last year to lay the groundwork for the historic first summit between the North's leader and US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in June in Singapore, former CIA official Andrew Kim said, South Korea's Yonhap news agency and the Wall Street Journal reported.

"'I'm a father and a husband. And I have children,'" Mr Andrew Kim quoted the North Korean leader as telling Mr Pompeo, when asked whether he was willing to end his nuclear programme.

"'And I don't want my children to carry the nuclear weapon on their back their whole life.' That was his answer," Mr Andrew Kim told a lecture on Friday at Stanford University's Asia Pacific Research Centre, where he is a visiting scholar.

Before he retired from the CIA, Mr Kim established the agency's Korea Mission Centre, in April 2017, and accompanied Mr Pompeo - who was then CIA director - to Pyongyang last year.

In their Singapore summit, Mr Kim and Mr Trump pledged to work towards peace between their countries and for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

But little progress has been made since then and they are set to meet again in Hanoi on Wednesday and Thursday.

They are expected to focus on what steps North Korea might take towards denuclearisation, in exchange for what US concession.

The former CIA officer said the North Korean leader expressed a strong desire to improve ties with the United States as a way to build confidence between them, which he said was needed to end the nuclear weapons programme.

The North Korean leader left Pyongyang by train for his visit to Vietnam on Saturday afternoon, Russia's TASS news agency reported on Saturday citing a North Korean diplomatic source.

North Korea's state media has yet to confirm either Mr Kim's trip to Vietnam or his summit with Mr Trump.

China proposes to buy $30 billion more in U.S. ag products
[Prairie Farmer] China is proposing that it could buy an additional $30 billion a year of U.S. agricultural products including soybeans, corn and wheat as part of a possible trade deal being negotiated by the two countries, according to people with knowledge of the plan.

The offer to buy the extra farm produce would be part of the memoranda of understanding under discussion by U.S. and Chinese negotiators in Washington, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are confidential. The purchases would be on top of pre-trade war levels and continue for the period covered by the memoranda, they said.

As part of the talks, officials are also planning to discuss removing anti-dumping and anti-subsidy tariffs on distillers dried grains, a by-product of corn ethanol production that’s used in animal feed, people said earlier. Soybeans, corn and wheat futures prices rose in Chicago in response to the news.

China has repeatedly offered to increase purchases of agricultural and energy products to shrink the U.S. trade deficit. Since a tariff truce agreed in December, it has resumed imports of some farm goods including soybeans and President Donald Trump this week said "a lot of" corn would be next on Beijing’s shopping list.

Israel arrests top Waqf officials in Jerusalem in overnight raid
[Aljazeera] Israeli police have arrested the head of the Islamic authority that oversees Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem following recent protests, an official from the authority said.

Religious Endowments Authority (Al Waqf) director Sheikh Abdul Azim Salhab was arrested early on Sunday as part of an overnight raid carried out by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, Mahdi Abdelhadi, a senior member of Al Waqf, said.

At least 13 other Palestinians have also been arrested, including Salhab's deputy, according to Maan news agency.

Al Waqf officials told Israeli daily Haaretz that Salhab's arrest was unusual.

"He's the most senior Jordanian figure in the [Palestinian] territories. 20 years ago [if] the police wanted to interrogate the mufti, they would call and invite him, but coming to a 75-year-old's home like that at 5am is unacceptable," the official was quoted as saying.

#2  From an updated version of the article:

Israeli police confirmed the arrest on Sunday, and the Waqf later said police had released Salhab and prohibited him from entering the site for a week.

Israel just reopened part of the facility (the Golden Gate, also known as the Gate of Mercy) that had been locked off since 2003 because Hamas-linked staff were storing weapons and personnel there, and using it as a base to excavate and destroy archeological evidence of the Jewish presence on the Temple Mount going back to First Temple times.

From an article today on the subject from the Times of Israel:

The Waqf has seen a new infusion of activists recently as Jordan, its longtime patron and overseer, moved earlier this month to share control with local Jerusalem Palestinian leaders.

In mid-February, Jordan enlarged the Waqf’s council from 11 members to 18. For the first time, Palestinian Authority officials and religious leaders were installed in the body, which has historically been made up of individuals close to the Jordanian monarchy.

The Waqf council’s new membership reflects that shift. The new members include PA officials Hatem Abdel Kader and the PA’s governor in Jerusalem, Adnan al-Husayn; religious leaders Akrama Sabri, considered close to Turkey’s ruling AKP party, and the Mufti of Jerusalem Muhammad Hussein; and the president of Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem, Imad Abu Kishk.

Millennial shopping habits are becoming a problem for the Diamond District
[NYP] Diamond dealers on 47th Street are hitting rock bottom ‐ and it’s all millennials’ fault.

The twenty-and thirty-somethings are turning to the Internet to buy engagement rings, squeezing gem sellers in the Diamond District, where empty storefronts and booths are multiplying.

"Everybody’s leaving. There’s no business," said Michael Abramov, who runs Abramov Jewelry with his brother, Albert. "The whole street is bad."

Young customers are less into formal fashion statements and not as likely to be impressed by a five-figure slice of ice.

"This generation is a more minimalist generation," said Ray Moses, who works in the business his father started in 1969, Ben Moses Fine Jewelry Designer.

"They don’t dress," said Mascha Seiden, who runs Paul Seiden Jeweler and has been on 47th Street since the 1950s.

Instead of roaming from shop to shop, buyers peruse Web sites like Blue Nile where they can chose from a variety of shapes, sizes and settings with the finished product delivered to their doors.

Hungary 'starving' Iraqi migrants detained at border
[Aljazeera] Hungary has refused to provide food for four to seven days for asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected, prompting the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to intervene, a Budapest-based rights group told Al Jazeera on Thursday.

Andras Lederer, the information and advocacy officer at the Hungarian Helsinki Committee (HHC), explained that parents from two Iraqi families were denied food while detained in Hungary's two transit zones in February.

HHC is a human rights organisation that is the only group in Hungary to provide high-level legal advice to refugees for free.

Most recently, two Iraqis were denied food for over four days, up to February 19, Lederer said. The family's asylum claim was rejected, but their deportation to Iraq has been suspended.

Earlier in February, two other Iraqis were denied food for six-and-a-half days, up to February 14.

Though the parents of the two families were not fed, Lederer said, the HHC was "very happy" their children received food, but it "shows that theoretically it's possible to provide food to these people".

The ECHR issued emergency orders, forcing Hungary to provide food to the Iraqis under Rule 39 (PDF), an interim measure which only applies "where there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm".

The ruling will be in place as long as they are detained in Hungary's transit zones.

Controversial electric shock treatment for severe depression could cause permanent brain damage and ‘should be stopped'
[MAIL] Controversial electric shock treatment for severe depression could cause permanent brain damage and ’should be stopped’, a leading psychologist has claimed.

A review of ten NHS mental health trusts, carried out by Professor John Read from the University of East London, has revealed that one patient in three is given electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, without their consent.

Prof Read’s Freedom of Information requests also showed a third of NHS trusts were failing to recognise adverse effects, which include long-term memory loss.

More than 5,000 British psychiatric patients receive ECT each year and in the wake of the findings, experts are now calling for a urgent review of the therapy, which they say offers no long-term benefits.

Now one mental health patient, a former paediatrician, has told The Mail on Sunday that she was given 21 sessions of ECT in a single year ‐ almost double the maximum number recommended ‐ in an attempt to treat her crippling depression. Dr Sue Cunliffe, 52, claims the treatment left her plagued by constant confusion and memory loss, while loud, bustling environments often leave her so ’disorientated she was ’unable to function’.

While now, 14 years on, her symptoms have mostly faded, they persisted for several years following the electric shock therapy.

The mother-of-three from Worcestershire, who has now been forced to abandon her career, said: ’By the time I finished ECT I was left with an inability to recognise faces, my hands shook uncontrollably and I couldn’t walk in a straight line. I fell over repeatedly and couldn’t walk through doors without bumping into the frames. My speech was slurred and I had word- finding problems. It took me three years to learn to read again.’

#4  ECT is only claimed to be effective in about half of the cases of severe depression for which it is prescribed. Memory loss and confusion are known side effects, especially immediately following treatment.

Sadly, trailing daughter #1 is among the 50% for which it did not work.

The current version is much milder and more targetted than what was formerly used, and I understand that even more refined treatments are being tested, as well as new drug treatments. But the NHS does not have the funding to pursue more modern treatments when older, cheaper treatments work well enough for the general run of patient — who anyway does not know enough to complain about the options on offer.

This really — though the Daily Mail and Professor John Read from the University of East London are either unaware or or refusing to contemplate the possibility — an indictment of Britain’s National Health Service approach to health care: uncaring or overworked doctors improperly prescribing known-to-be risky treatments without bothering to pay attention to the impact on an individual patient, resulting in patients who lives are utterly destroyed, or sending patients home with aspirin only to have them die of whatever condition the doctor missed, whether cancer or appendicitis. Dr. Sue Cunkiffe, 52, is lucky she merely had to accept she would never be able to practice her profession again after spending three years relearning how to read — there are endless reports of patients of all ages dying because the NHS medical professionals didn’t bother to look closely at individual patients or follow up on diagnoses and treatments.

Gunmen kill three Guinean peacekeepers in botched robbery in Mali
BAMAKO (Reuters) - Unidentified gunmen killed three Guinean members of a U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Mali in what the force described as a robbery gone wrong, far from the northern area where troops have been attacked by insurgents.

The peacekeepers were in a rental vehicle on their way to return to Guinea for leave when they were stopped 44 kilometers (27 miles) southwest of Bamako on Friday night, the mission, known as MINUSMA, said.

U.N. peacekeepers and French forces are stationed in central and northern Mali to combat well armed jihadist groups with links to al Qaeda and Islamic State seen as threatening security across Africa’s Sahel region.

A MINUSMA spokesman said that the attack was a botched robbery, which would distinguish it from targeted attacks by jihadists using mortars and mines in the north of the country that have made Mali the deadliest U.N. mission with more than 160 peacekeepers killed.

The existential threat to the Democratic Party
[American Thinker] There is an existential threat to the Democratic Party ‐ brought on by Democrats.

Pandering to black voters ‐ and supporting policies that keep them uneducated and living in ghettos ‐ has been a high priority of the Democrat Party since the 1930s.

It has been a success. Democrats get 90 percent of the vote of Americans with black skin in most cases. But several trends are working to loosen that hold ‐ two in particular.

One is the integration of neighborhoods that is taking place naturally and despite policies designed to prevent it. One of the liberal fantasies is "white flight," in which white Americans allegedly have fled cities for the suburbs to avoid living near black Americans. Any cursory examination of the data demonstrates that blacks, as they rise the economic ladder, are fleeing crime and congestion for the suburbs and rural areas as well.

Another commonsense conclusion can be arrived at by simple observation. Look at the couples in shopping malls. How many are mixed-race? As they marry and have children, are those children going to be the oppressed or the oppressors?

Liberals are helpless. They cannot prevent it from happening. Some people have black skin, and some have white, but at some point in the future, it is likely most will have skins of a neutral hue.

Trump-Hating Lesbian Tennis Champ Destroyed for Saying Men and Women Are Different
[American Thinker] Martina Navratilova is one of the greatest female tennis players of all time. She holds the record for most singles and doubles titles in the Open Era (167 and 177, respectively), including 17 Grand Slam singles titles. For 15 straight years, from 1977 to 1993, she never fell below the top 3 ranking in Women's Tennis Association singles. At a time when baseline play was the norm, she revolutionized women's tennis with her aggressive serve and volley style reminiscent of her male counterparts of the era.

Navratilova defected from communist Czechoslovakia in 1975 and became a U.S. citizen in 1981. That same year, when there was still a price to be paid for doing so, she came out as a lesbian and has since engaged in a long career of LGBT activism. She lent her name and support to ballot initiatives, spoke at LGBT marches, and in 2000 was the recipient of the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT lobbying group. She is active on Twitter and firmly in the Orange Man Bad camp. No one could ever accuse Martina of not being down for the cause.

All this was not enough to protect Navratilova from ostracization and accusations of bigotry last week when she questioned the wisdom of allowing men pretending to be women to compete in women's sports. In an equivocal, diplomatic, almost apologetic column in the Sunday Times, she suggested that men have an unfair advantage over actual women.

Perhaps in recognition of the absurdity of their position, the reaction from transsexual, transgender activists was quick, severe, and unforgiving. Navratilova was accused of being "transphobic" on social media, attacked in the LGBT press, and kicked off the board of an organization called Athlete Ally that promotes athletes based on their sexual orientation.

North Korea reports Kim's summit with Trump; cargo plane lands in Hanoi
SEOUL/HANOI (Reuters) - North Korea on Sunday confirmed for the first time that its leader, Kim Jong Un, will hold a second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, days ahead of the high-stakes nuclear meeting in Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi.

Kim left Pyongyang by train on Saturday afternoon for the Feb. 27-28 summit accompanied by senior North Korean officials as well as his influential sister, North Korea’s official KCNA news agency and its Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported.

Trump and Kim will meet in Hanoi eight months after their historic summit in Singapore, the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, where they pledged to work toward the complete denaturalization of the Korean peninsula.

With little progress since then, the two leaders are expected to focus on what elements of North Korea’s nuclear program it might begin to give up, in exchange for U.S. concessions.

Bolton scraps plans to visit South Korea 'to focus on events in Venezuela
[The Hill] Bolton scraps plans to visit South Korea 'to focus on events in Venezuela.

President Trump's national security adviser John Bolton has reportedly canceled a planned trip to South Korea in order to address the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela.

A spokesman for the National Security Council told The Hill in an email on Saturday that Bolton would not take his scheduled trip next week to South Korea in order to "focus on events in Venezuela."

The spokesman added that Bolton would still attend the upcoming summit between President Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, Vietnam.

"Ambassador Bolton has canceled his travel to the Republic of Korea to focus on events in Venezuela," said Garrett Marquis, according to CNN.

Venezuela's escalating political crisis reached new heights on Friday after two indigenous people were reportedly killed by Venezuelan military forces at one of the country's border checkpoints with Brazil. The country has seen sweeping protests in an effort to pressure President Nicolás Maduro to step down.

Brennan: Trump ‘Is Not Fit to Serve as President'
[Breitbart] Friday on MSNBC’s "Andrea Mitchell Reports," former CIA Director John Brennan said President Donald Trump was "not fit to serve as president of the United States."

Discussing an open letter published in The Washington Post, by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Brennan said, "I think Adam Schiff captured it well. Mr. Trump is a deeply flawed individual who I think has demonstrated that he is not fit to serve as president of the United States."

He added, "Adam and others, including myself, have been very dismayed at the Republican leaders of Congress and the members of the Republican party who have been reluctant to call Mr. Trump what he is, which is an individual who has demonstrated the lack of ethics, principles, as well as competence. And so I’m hoping that the Republicans are going to be speaking out against him."

Police Unlawfully Rejected ‘Exceptional' Recruit for Being Straight White Male
Affirmative Action is alive and well in Great Britain.
[Breitbart] Cheshire Police abused "positive action" legislation to unlawfully discriminate against an "exceptional" candidate for being a straight white male, an employment tribunal has ruled.

Matthew Furlong, 25, applied to Cheshire Police in order to follow in the footsteps of his father, who is a serving detective inspector on the force ‐ but was ultimately turned down for a role, despite being told "it was refreshing to meet someone as well-prepared as yourself" and that he "could not have done any more" after passing the interview stage of the recruitment process, ITV news reports.

Under the Equality Act of 2010, British employers technically cannot discriminate against people on the basis of certain "protected characteristics" including race, sex, and sexuality, but they can choose candidates from certain groups over others ‐ typically white people, and in particular white men ‐ if they are of "equal merit".

Employers can also outright discriminate against people from "under-represented" groups for training programmes, workshops, and so-called internships ‐ many of which pay more than a typical working-class job ‐ aimed at increasing employment prospects.

More on the ISIS evacuees from Baghouz
[IsraelTimes] They were living in holes in the ground, with only dry flatbread to eat at the end. Those injured in an intense military campaign had no access to medical care, and those who were sick had no medicine.

Yet, if it were not for the call from their leaders to leave, they would have stayed.

Such is the devotion of several hundred men, women and kiddies who were evacuated Friday from the last speck of land controlled by the Islamic State

Egypt's efforts in fighting terrorism continues
“It is important to bear in mind that terrorism is not an aim in and of itself but a means towards an end, such as changing the identity of Sinai for example. And though the terrorist organizations that exist at present have a single source, there is a division of labour between them. The attack in Sinai came a day after the failed kaboom in Giza Square. The motor was the same, even if the parts of the engine that perpetrated the attacks were different."
[AlAhram] Egypt experienced two terrorist attacks this week, one in Arish and the other ‐ a suicide kaboom ‐ in the Darb al-Ahmar district near al-Azhar. The attacks had many elements in common in terms of timing and targets as well as in the public outrage they generated.

On Tuesday, in Darb al-Ahmar, al-Hassan Abdallah, 37, went kaboom! when a security detail tried to arrest him after a four-day manhunt following an attempt to plant an IED near a police unit stationed by al-Istiqama Mosque in Giza Square. Explosive experts succeeded in defusing the device.

Abdallah was tracked to the Darb al-Ahmar district where he was seen on the cycle of violence he had used to flee Giza Square. When confronted by police he detonated an boom belt, killing three coppers and himself. The kaboom took place in a crowded quarter and maimed several passers-by.

French yellow vest protesters seek momentum on 15th week
[AlAhram] Yellow vest protesters erupted into the streets across La Belle France on Saturday for a 15th straight weekend of demonstrations, trying to re-energize supporters while tamping down on the violence and anti-Semitism in the movement's ranks.

Hundreds gathered at the Arc de Triomphe monument in Gay Paree for a march through well-off neighborhoods to protest government policies they see as favoring the rich. It was among many rallies and marches planned around Gay Paree and in other cities.

Five separate demonstrations were organized in the French capital.

Support for the movement has ebbed in recent weeks as it has splintered and outbreaks of violence continue. Online announcements for Saturday's marches appealed for peaceful action, and one of the weekend protests aimed to stand up against anti-Semitism.

The krazed killer views of some protesters erupted in a torrent of anti-Semitic insults hurled at noted philosopher Alain Finkielkraut on the sidelines of last weekend's Gay Paree protest. The assault came days after the French government reported a huge rise in incidents of anti-Semitism last year.

A few hundred yellow vest protesters made the most of the sunny weather to gather at the Chambord Castle in central La Belle France for a picnic while activists reportedly blocked access to an Amazon platform in the southwestern city of Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
Local authorities in Clermont-Ferrand urged citizens to postpone their journeys to the central French city, where hundreds of yellow vest protesters gathered. The prefecture said police tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
13 people _ including seven who were placed in jug _ and seized weapons including baseball bats and alarm pistols.

The yellow vest movement was named after the fluorescent garments French motorists must carry in their vehicles for emergencies. The protests started in November to oppose fuel tax hikes but have expanded into a broader public rejection of French President Emmanuel Macron's economic policies, which protesters say favor businesses and the wealthy over ordinary French workers.
Deutsche Welle quantifies:
The 15th consecutive yellow vest protests were relatively peaceful compared to previous weeks. Some 46,000 people nationwide joined the protests, a figure slightly higher than last weekend.

Five separate demonstrations in the capital drew 5,800 people, the interior ministry said, while there were around 46,600 protesters nationwide. Some 41,500 people joined protests across the country last week.

The protests ‐ named after the fluorescent jackets French motorists must carry in their vehicles for emergencies ‐ have generally become smaller since December when there was vandalism and looting in Gay Paree.

Protest organizers have sought to keep momentum behind an increasingly splintered movement and bouts of violence that threatened to tarnish its image.

DOZENS OF ARRRESTS
Police said 28 people were tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in Gay Paree, where protests were mostly peaceful. As they ended, festivities broke out and police fired tear gas at protesters on the Place du Trocadero across the River Seine from the Eiffel Tower.

Another 18 people were also arrested in the central city of Clermont-Ferrand, where 2,500 participated in protests that led to festivities with police. Weapons including baseball bats and gas pistols were among the items seized, police said.

In the western city of Rennes, 18 people were arrested, six coppers slightly injured and six protesters hurt by riot control pellets.

Up to 30 militants killed in 4 provinces in past 24 hours: MoD
As M. Murcek commented yesterday, “an up-tempo attrition delivery program sounds like the ticket.” Here at Rantburg we aim to please. ;-)
[KhaamaPress] Up to 30 holy warriors have been killed during the ground operations and Arclight airstrikes which were conducted in 4 different provinces of the country in the past 24 hours.

The Ministry of Defense in a statement said the operations were conducted in Ghazni, Uruzgan, Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, and Pashtun-infested Logar provinces.

The statement further added that 10 holy warriors killed and 11 others were maimed during the airstirkes and Afghan army clearance operations in Andar district of Ghazni province.

The statement further added that 8 holy warriors killed during the airstrikes in Tarinkot city of Uruzgan province and some weapons and munitions were also destroyed.

At least 5 holy warriors were killed during the airstrikes in Helmand province, 2 of their hideouts were destroyed and a cycle of violence and some weapons and munitions were also destroyed.

Similarly, 4 holy warriors were killed during the similar airstrikes in Baraki Barak district of Pashtun-infested Logar province.

The anti-government armed holy warriors including Taliban

Afghanistan Writes To UNSC On Violations By Pakistani Military
[ToloNews] The Afghan government in a letter to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Security Council (UNSC) has raised the issue of "consistent violations of Afghanistan’s territory" by Pak forces and has called on the UN to initiate "necessary measures to address the matter at hand in an effective manner".

This is Afghanistan’s second letter to the United Nations in a week. The first time was about a planned meeting between Pakistain’s Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
and Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
’s representatives in Islamabad. In the letter, the Afghan government said the meeting "undermines" the Afghan grinding of the peace processor and "violates Afghanistan’s national illusory sovereignty". Taliban called off the meet saying they are unable to travel due to UN and US travel restrictions on them.

"The nature of these violations mainly includes persistent shelling of Afghan territory, particularly in districts and villages of Kunar and Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
provinces; violation of Afghan air space by Pak military aircrafts, as well as construction of military posts, barbwire fence and barriers inside Afghanistan’s territory, most recently in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar," Nazifullah Salarzai, Deputy Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to United Nation, said in a letter to the UNSC on February 22.

Afghanistan said the cross-Durand Line violations date back to 2012 but have increased in frequency since 2017.

According to the letter, during 2012 to 2017 period, 28,849 artillery shells were fired into Afghanistan by Pakistain resulting in the death of at least 82 people and injuring 187 others.

Since 1st January 2018, the number of violations by Pakistain in Afghanistan stands at 161 which include firing 6,025 artillery shells into Afghan territory.

The Afghan government also exposed the policy of the new Pakistain government led by Imran Khan to UNSC.

"What we have seen is nothing but actions that translate to the continued violation of the action plan," Salarzai said in the letter, recalling the September 2018 visit of Pakistain’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi to Kabul during which Islamabad reiterated its commitment to implement the Afghanistan Pakistain action plan.

Afghanistan Pakistain Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS) was agreed by former Pakistain government under former Prime Minister of Pakistain, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and the Afghan government for peace between the two countries.

It also included a commitment to avoid territorial and aerial violations.

India-Pakistan
Ban on JuD
[DAWN] THE decision by the country’s civilian and military leadership to take action against Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
and its charity wing, Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation, is significant.

On Thursday, the National Security Committee, with the prime minister in the chair, took the decision, with the Prime Minister’s Office later saying that the state cannot be allowed to "become hostage to extremism".

The JuD is of course an avatar of Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
, one of the many jihadi groups that dot this country’s landscape. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
making an announcement about the group’s proscription is not enough; if the state has evidence of the outfit’s involvement in militancy it should present the facts and pursue the legal course so that JuD’s leadership can face justice.

As has been witnessed for nearly two decades now, the state moves to ban krazed killer outfits, but, in very little time they are back, up and running, with new names and the entire structure of violence intact. For example, in 2002 the Musharraf regime banned a host of jihadi and sectarian groups, yet this effort had little practical effect because with a mere change of nomenclature, the groups continued to peddle hate and violence, making a mockery of the proscription.

Moreover, the establishment’s attempts to ’mainstream’ violent actors ‐ eg presenting them as legitimate religious scholars or relaunching the jihadi lashkars as political parties ‐ have also failed to steer these groups away from violence and hate. For example, a sectarian party has been repeatedly allowed to take part in general elections, but its big shots have failed to cease spewing venom.

History has shown that while low-level jihadi and sectarian party cadres perhaps can be deradicalised and mainstreamed, their leadership is committed to the ideology of violence and can only be silenced through the legal path. These parties’ fundraising, communications and organizational systems must be targeted to put them out of business; imposing mere ’bans’ is futile.

In the delicate post-Pulwama period, Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
must be praised for saying that those who use this country’s soil to attack others are enemies of Pakistain. The government has now started to take action. For instance, reports emerged on Friday that a key madressah associated with Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
in Bahawalpur ‐ another krazed killer outfit accused of orchestrating cross-border attacks ‐ was taken over by the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

government.

These moves indicate that the leadership has perhaps realised that taking half-baked steps against violent actors is dangerous for Pakistain’s internal security, as well as its external relations. Now the elected leadership and the military establishment must take this campaign ‐ as envisaged under NAP ‐ to its logical conclusion by ensuring that non-state actors are not able to raise armed militias, and that those spewing hatred against other countries or spreading sectarian views are prosecuted.

It was unwise to allow these outfits to operate in the past, and efforts are needed to shut them down permanently.

Woman, five-year-old killed in basant gun sex
[DAWN] A woman and a five-year-old girl were killed during firing in the air and more than 140 people were injured in the garrison city on Friday as people celebrated basant despite the ban on kite flying.

Kaleem Ahmed, a resident of Bara Kahu said he had come to Sadiqabad with his family to see his ailing mother in-law. He said his five-year-old daughter Urwa was playing with other children on the roof of the house when she was hit in the head by a stray bullet.

“We did not realise she had been hit by a bullet and we took her to the hospital thinking she was unconscious because she had fallen down. Doctors at the Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) told us she was killed by a bullet in her head,” he told Dawn.

He said he had declined to register a case.

A woman, Shamim, the daughter of Latif, was killed after being hit by a stray bullet in the limits of the Waris Khan police station, which led to the suspension of the station house officer.

Iraq
KRG hands over thousands of documents to Baghdad on missing Yezidis
[Rudaw] Based on a previous agreement with Erbil and Baghdad the former has handed over thousands of documents, blood samples and other evidence to the Baghdad Forensics Court, that will primarily focus on Yezidis who were kidnapped by ISIS.

"We have submitted our archives of blood tests and information about the missing persons [to the court]. They will enter the information [to a database] and take reports of DNA. Other stages are the digging up of the [mass] graves and taking out the remains [of the victims] as well as taking DNA samples from the remains," Hassam Abdulrazaq, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Evidence Gathering Office, told Rudaw on Friday.

The Iraqi federal and Kurdistan regional governments agreed in late January to submit all documents to Baghdad Forensics Court which will create a database for all evidence and compare them with ones found on the ground during inspecting the remains of victims, according to Ayman Mustafa, a judge at KRG’s Commission for Investigation and Gathering Evidence (CIGE).

So far 2,604 documents and 1,561 blood samples have been submitted to the court by KRG.

Six members of Yezidi Hazo Saado’s family have been missing for five years including her parents. Saado told Rudaw that her parents were probably killed. She visited CIGE in Duhok to provide a blood sample.

"We also do not know anything about the destiny of my big brother, his wife, one of my sisters who could not walk, and my nephew," Saado told Rudaw.

More than 6,000 Yezidis went missing when ISIS took control of Shingal in 2014, but only about half of them have been found so far.

Earlier this winter, flash floods swept away many remains at some mass graves in Shingal, making Yezidis fear that the remains of their relatives could get lost in addition to proof of the crimes.

Hussein Qaedi, head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) office for rescuing Yezidis, told Rudaw the 11 children have been taken to safety. In the coming days they will be reunited with their families, he said.

His office has documented more than 6,400 Yezidis ‐ mainly women and kiddies ‐ who were seized by ISIS when the group swept across northern Iraq in 2014.

More than 3,000 Yezidi women and kiddies are still unaccounted for.

On Friday, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) trucked dozens of civilians out of Baghouz ‐ the last significant territory held by the Islamic State group (ISIS).

Over the last two months, dozens of Yezidis have been freed from ISIS’ clutches.

Judge Plans to Climb Statue of Liberty Before Sentencing Woman Who Climbed It
[EpochTimes] Therese Okoumou, 44, scaled the statue on July 4, 2018, claiming she was protesting the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The island that the statue sits on was shut down on the national holiday, forcing thousands of would-be tourists to make other plans.

In an order filed this week, Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein said that he plans to visit the statue "to better appreciate the risks or hazards created by defendant’s conduct," according to NBC, which obtained the filing.

"Additionally, if it were deemed possible and safe, the Court would like a ladder to be made available so the Court (and counsel if requested) can view, while remaining on the ladder, the surface of the area where the defendant was situated on July 4, 2018," the order read.

Dozens arrested in protests against fifth term for Algeria president
[PULSE.NG] Police fired tear gas on Friday to block a protest march on the presidential palace, prompting demonstrators to respond with stone-throwing.

The Directorate General for National Security (DGSN) said Saturday it had detained 41 people over "public disorder, vandalism, damage to property, violence and assault".

Despite the arrests, protests around the country were largely tolerated by authorities, even in the capital, where demonstrations have been strictly banned since 2001.

The police did not give an estimate of the number of protesters, but a security official speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
told AFP some 20,000 people had demonstrated nationwide, around a quarter of them in Algiers.

The official said 38 of the arrests were in the capital, and that no security personnel had been maimed.

Some demonstrators in Algiers scaled the outside of a building and tore down a poster bearing the portrait of Bouteflika

French-language daily El Watan said crowds also gathered in the city of Ouargla where "thousands of demonstrators chanted 'the people want the fall of the regime'," the slogan of the Arab Spring revolts of 2011.

San Diego-Based Men's Group Wins U.S. Suit: Women Must Register for Draft
[Times of San Diego] Even though America hasn't had a military draft since 1973, men ‐ but not women ‐ are required to register with the Selective Service.

A federal judge Friday said that must change ‐ ordering the government to register women as well.
Welcome to Real Equality, SJW's!
U.S. District Judge Gray H. Miller in Houston agreed with the San Diego-based National Coalition for Men and granted its request for summary judgment in a class action suit.
Touch my grandchildren and things will become instantly kinetic.
"The male-only registration requirement of the Military Selective Service Act, 50 U.S.C. § 3802(a), violates the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution," Miller's "final judgment" says.

"Women are now allowed in combat, so this decision is long overdue," said Marc Angelucci, attorney for NCFM. "After decades of sex discrimination against men in the Selective Service, the courts have finally found it unconstitutional to force only men to register."

Indeed, Miller wrote: "While historical restrictions on women in the military may have justified past discrimination, men and women are now ‘similarly situated for purposes of a draft or registration for a draft.' … If there ever was a time to discuss ‘the place of women in the Armed Services,' that time has passed."

Angelucci noted that despite the absence of a draft, men still face prison, fines and denial of federal loans for not registering or for not updating the government of their whereabouts.

"Since women will be required to register with the Selective Service," he said Saturday in a statement, "they should face the same repercussions as men for any noncompliance."

Angelucci, a Los Angeles attorney, previously worked as a family law attorney for the Men's Legal Center in San Diego.

#1  While I'm happy payback is coming, its all due to 'judicial' interpretation, not the reading of the Constitution. The Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment has been abused by the judiciary to expand its powers and oversight into things it was never intended, but certainly avoids all that messy stuff in Article V on how to amend the Constitution.

Here's the part the judge refused to adhere to -
Art I, Section 8, Congress shall
To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

It's Congress' call. Per their authority

10 U.S. Code § 246 - Militia: composition and classes

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

That is the basis for the selective service and activation of the federal militia.
I don't see anything but another example of judicial dictation overthrowing the Constitutional separation of power.

NASA greenlights SpaceX crew capsule test to ISS
[PULSE.NG] NASA on Friday gave SpaceX the green light to test a new crew capsule by first sending an unmanned craft with a life-sized mannequin to the International Space Station.

"We're go for launch, we're go for docking," said William Gerstenmaier, the associate administrator with NASA Human Exploration and Operations.

A Falcon 9 rocket from the private US-based SpaceX is scheduled to lift off, weather permitting, on March 2 to take the Crew Dragon test capsule to the ISS.

NASA signed contracts in 2014 with SpaceX and Boeing for the companies to shuttle US astronauts to the ISS.

This will be the first time the US space agency lets a private-sector company transport their astronauts.

NASA ended its space-shuttle program in 2011 and since then has relied on buying spots on Russian Soyuz rockets to send US astronauts to the orbiting ISS.

"This is an absolutely critical first step that we do as we move towards returning the crewed launch capability back here to the US," said Gerstenmaier, speaking at a presser in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The March 2 flight will be identical to a flight that is set to take two astronauts to the ISS later in the year, possibly in July.

The Crew Dragon capsule has seven seats. It should dock with the ISS on March 3, then detach and return to Earth on March 8.

"I guarantee everything will not work exactly right, and that's cool, that's exactly what we want to do," said Gerstenmaier.

"We want to maximize our learning so when... we're ready to go do a real crewed mission, and it'll be the right safety for our crews."

SpaceX has already made more than a dozen unmanned trips since 2012 carrying supplies to the ISS with the cargo version of the Dragon capsule.

Aid Shipments Cross Venezuelan Border As Maduro’s Soldiers Abandon Their Posts
[DAILYCALLER] The first shipment of humanitarian aid crossed the border from Brazil to Venezuela Saturday, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said, but getting aid to the people of Venezuela continues to be beyond difficult.

"This is a great accomplishment, Venezuela!" Guaido wrote on Twitter Saturday.

Guaido, the 35-year-old president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, declared himself the country’s interim leader in January as conditions deteriorated under socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
Guaido’s supporters are trying to bring aid shipments from Colombia and Brazil into Venezuela, but Maduro’s troops are blocking trucks both coming and going along parts of the border. Video footage from Friday showed Venezuelan soldiers erecting barricades and brawling with Guaido’s supporters to keep trucks from exiting the country to collect aid.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
some soldiers posted on the Venezuelan border defected from Maduro’s control. A social media video appears to show four soldiers denouncing Maduro and supporting Guaido, who promised them "amnesty," reported BBC.

Guaido was in Colombia Saturday seeing off shipments of aid to Venezuela with Colombian president Ivan Duque, reported CBS News. Thousands of volunteers will help get the aid into Venezuela, he said according to BBC.

WATCH: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks Tax Rates, Suggests ‘$10 Million' Is ‘Enough'
[DailyWire] During her segment, Ocasio-Cortez talked about the Green New Deal, and explained her support for a marginal tax rate of 70% on individuals making more than $10 million a year:

If you make more than $10 million in one year, which is a pretty good year ... your ten millionth and one dollar gets taxed at 70%, which, by the way, we used to have marginal tax rates under Republican presidents of 90%, and it was when we experienced some of the largest rates of economic [growth in the United States].

...It really comes down to the question of, isn’t $10 million enough? Like, when does it stop, right? At what point is it immoral that we’re building Jeff Bezos a helipad when we have the most amount of homeless people in New York City?

Per Silentbrick, this from today’s New York Post (actually from late yestreday, but it would have appeared in print this morning):

She may be America’s most famous freshman congresswoman, but in New York, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a virtual ghost.

She has no district office and no local phone number, unlike the state’s three other freshman members.

And it’s unclear whether the 29-year-old lawmaker, who represents the Bronx and Queens, actually still lives in the Parkchester neighborhood that has been so closely tied to her rise — even though she won her upset victory over fellow Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley with accusations that his home in Virginia made him too Washington-focused to serve his district.

Ocasio-Cortez has used her deceased father’s Bronx condo on her voter registration since 2012, and even posed in the one-bedroom Bronx flat for celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz in a Vogue magazine profile after her stunning November election. But The Post could find little indication she continues to live there.

Egypt court sentences two monks to death over bishop killing
[PULSE.NG] An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced two monks to death over the murder of a bishop, a judicial source said, in a case that shocked the Middle East's largest Christian community.

Coptic Bishop Epiphanius was found dead with a head wound in July at the Saint Macarius monastery in the plains of Wadi al-Natrun, northwest of Cairo.

Prosecutors said one of the monks Isaiah confessed to striking the abbot with a metal bar as the second monk Philotheos kept watch.

The authorities blamed the killing on unspecified "differences" between the two monks, one of whom was later defrocked, and the bishop.

The sentence against the two monks was referred to Egypt's Grand Mufti.

The country's top theological authority is required by law to give its legally non-binding opinion in cases of capital punishment.

The defendants can appeal the verdict after the Mufti gives an opinion and the ruling is officially issued on April 24.

In the wake of the bishop's killing, Egypt's Coptic Church placed a one-year moratorium on accepting new monks.

It also banned monks from social media, tightened financial controls and refocused attention on spiritual life.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's predominantly Sunni Moslem population of 100 million.

The country's vast desert is home to some of Christianity's most ancient monasteries.

India-Pakistan
India detains Kashmir separatists, issues new warning to Pakistan
[PULSE.NG] As international concern grows over India-Pakistain sabre-rattling, residents of Kashmire, at the centre of a decades-old struggle between the nuclear-armed neighbours, reported heightened military activity.

The region has been on edge since the February 14 attack on an Indian convoy which killed 40 soldiers and was claimed by Pakistain-based Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

India has accused Pakistain of supporting the attack -- a claim rejected by the Islamabad government -- and there have been widespread calls for nationalist leader Modi to order a reprisal strike.

About 10,000 paramilitaries started arriving in Kashmire on Saturday, a day after India ordered the reinforcements.

Modi told a rally in Rajasthan state that the country was "angry" about the attack in the Pulwama district of Indian-held Kashmire.

"After the Pulwama attack, you must have seen how Pakistain is being brought to account one step at a time. They are in a state of panic because of our government's decisions," Modi said, speaking in Hindi.

"We will not sit quietly after taking this pain. We know how to crush terrorism," he added. "We have given full freedom to the military."

Among those taken into custody in the crackdown in Kashmire were senior figures in Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
, the region's biggest religious organization, and the Hurriyat Conference, a coalition of local political parties.

Jamaat and Hurriyat Conference both strongly support Moslem Kashmire's right to choose whether it wants to be part of India or Pakistain, which have been fighting over the region since independence in 1947.

"Police and other agencies launched a mass arrest drive and raided many houses in the valley with dozens of... central and district-level leaders locked away
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
," Jamaat said in a statement, adding that those detained included central leader Abdul Hamid Fayaz.

'ARBITRARY MOVE'
Police linked the arrests to security preparations for upcoming elections in India and a Supreme Court hearing on Monday on a challenge to a constitutional provision that gives Kashmiris special rights to property and jobs in the territory.

But the arrests drew widespread criticism from Kashmire politicians.

"Fail to understand such an arbitrary move which will only precipitate matters," Mehbooba Mufti, a pro-India former chief minister said on Twitter. "You can imprison a person but not his ideas."

"Such illegal and coercive measures against Kashmiris are futile and will not change realities on ground," wrote Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, an influential separatist leader, on Twitter.

Businesses across Kashmire were shut on Saturday, some in protest at the arrests and with others fearing conflict between India and Pakistain.

Many in Kashmire are wary of a military strike over the suicide bomb and residents in several areas reported unusual military air activity on Friday night.

Authorities did not comment on the reported fighter aircraft and helicopters flying over the territory.

Pakistain's Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer...
has vowed retaliation if his country is attacked. In a letter to the UN Security Council released Saturday, Pak Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi accused India of "warmongering".

More than 100 separatists detained in Kashmir raids in pre-election crackdown

[AlAhram] More than 100 separatists in Kashmire were detained in overnight raids, police officials said on Saturday, as part of a crackdown on groups that might cause trouble ahead of nationwide elections set to be held by May.

The overnight arrests in the state included those of many senior members of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), an Islamic organization that wants Kashmire to be independent from India.

The arrests led to violent scenes in parts of Kashmire, with stone-throwing protestors met by police firing tear gas.

JeI’s leader, Dr Abdul Hamid Fayaz and Yasin Malik
...chairman of one of the two factions of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. JKLF is a Kashmiri nationalist organization founded in Birmingham, UK in 1977. Branches weren't actually established in Kashmir for another ten years. It has the usual demands for separation of J&K from secular India so it can become an independent Islamic rathole. It seems to have no interest in Pak Kashmir breaking away to join it. In 1994 Malik renounced violence after he was released from jail and from that point he and his organization pursued peaceful means to impose their will on the region...
, the head of Jammu Kashmire Liberation Front (JKLF) that wants independence from both India and Pakistain, were among those detained.

A front man for India’s home ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the arrests or troop deployments.

Next week India’s Supreme Court is also expected to hear a petition attempting to remove an article in the country’s constitution that prevents non-residents from moving to Jammu and Kashmire, the Indian state that contains Moslem-majority Kashmire. If passed it could further escalate tensions in the region.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lebanese demand civil marriage on home soil
[PULSE.NG] Dozens of protesters rallied in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Saturday, calling on the government to recognise civil marriages carried out on home soil.

The demonstrators gathered in front of Leb's interior ministry, days after recently-appointed Interior Minister Raya al-Hasan said she is willing to engage in "serious and profound dialogue" over the issue.

The minister's comments prompted a backlash from religious bodies, including the highest Sunni authority in Leb, and stirred debate on social media.

Leb has 15 separate personal status laws for its recognised religions but no civil code covering issues such as marriage.

Many Lebanese couples travel to neighbouring Cyprus to tie the knot in a civil ceremony, because Lebanese authorities recognise such unions only if they have been registered abroad.

Hasan, the first female interior minister in Leb and the Arab world, touched on the issue of civil unions in an interview with Euronews last week.

She said she would "personally endorse" attempts to establish a framework to govern civil marriages in Leb.

"I will try to open the door for serious and profound dialogue on this issue with all religious authorities and others, with the support of Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
," she said.

Dar al-Fatwa, the highest Sunni authority in Leb, issued a response the day after Hasan's interview was published, saying it "categorically rejects" civil unions conducted on Lebanese soil.

Such unions "violate the provisions of Islamic law" and "contravene the provisions of the Lebanese constitution" regarding the authority of religious courts over personal status issues, it said.

The highest Shiite authority in the country also expressed opposition.

"The Lebanese constitution recognises that every sect has its own personal status laws," deputy head of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council said Friday.

"We strongly oppose civil marriage because it violates the constitution," he said.

The head of Leb's Maronite church, Beshara Rai, however, said he was "not against civil unions" conducted on Lebanese territory.

Babylon Bee, so...: Legislators Propose Replacing All Spacecraft With High-Speed Trains By 2030
A new environmental proposal would have the US replace all public and private spacecraft with high-speed trains by the year 2030, reports confirmed Thursday.

"We are wasting so much rocket fuel to generate the thrust necessary to leave Earth's orbit when we could just build a train track all the way to Mars or Jupiter," said a lobbyist for the train industry. "And just think about how pleasant a ride from Earth to Mars would be, coasting along the space tracks at 200 miles per hour for the next 193 years."

The initial proposal would only cost approximately $10,000 trillion, according to a representative of one environmental think tank in D.C. "This is really a bargain when you think about it," she said, pointing to a complex series of calculations she had performed on a LeapFrog laptop. "Besides, we can just print money to pay for it. Or maybe have a bake sale or something."

The network of space trains would only function for a few seconds before needing to be rebuilt as the earth orbits away from the newly built track and rips it to pieces. But the environmental lobby insists this is a positive, pointing out that rebuilding the interplanetary space rail indefinitely will provide countless jobs that otherwise would not exist.

"Every broken train track, every new space train car, every broken space train window will contribute to the economy," said one leading environmentalist.

California is ahead of the curve and has already begun work on its own high-speed space rail, but it was immediately delayed for 770 years and will now cost 52x the original estimate.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia names first woman envoy to Washington at critical time
[PULSE.NG] Princess Rima bint Bandar replaced Prince Khalid bin Salman, the younger brother of the powerful crown prince who was appointed vice defence minister in a flurry of late-night royal decrees announced on state media.

The reshuffle comes as Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
seeks to quell an international outcry over Khashoggi's murder last October in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which strained relations with its key ally Washington.

After initially denying they knew anything of Khashoggi's disappearance, the kingdom finally acknowledged that Saudi agents killed him inside the consulate, but described it as a rogue operation.

Princess Rima faces hostile US politicians who have threatened to take tough action against Saudi Arabia over the brutal killing amid claims that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as of 2016....
-- the de-facto ruler who also serves as the defence minister -- was personally responsible.

The Saudi government has denied he had anything to do with the murder of Khashoggi, a royal insider-turned-critic who was a columnist with the Washington Post.

"The appointment of a new envoy signifies an attempt by Riyadh to try and re-set relations with Washington and draw a line under the Khashoggi affair, however unlikely that may be in practice, at least with Congress," Kristian Ulrichsen, a fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute in the United States, told AFP.

Princess Rima, the daughter of a former long-time ambassador to the United States, has been a leading advocate of female empowerment in the kingdom, which has long faced criticism over its treatment of women.

The princess previously worked at the kingdom's General Sports Authority, where she led a campaign to increase women's participation in sports.

Elizabeth Warren Says Reparations for Native-Americans Should Be ‘Part of the Conversation' Today
[Lifezette] One of the 2020 presidential hopefuls, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), expanded on an already-radical proposal on Friday, telling reporters that Native-Americans should be "part of the conversation" on reparations for African-Americans ‐ a move that threatens to bring back her own history with Native-Americans.

Taking questions from reporters ahead of a Democratic Party fundraiser in Manchester, New Hampshire, Warren said America has an "ugly history of racism" and outlined her ways to tackle it ‐ including the possibility of reparations.

"We need to confront it head on and we need to talk about the right away to address it and make change," she said.

Warren had said in a statement to The New York Times this week that "we must confront the dark history of slavery and government-sanctioned discrimination in this country that has had many consequences, including undermining the ability of black families to build wealth in America for generations."

"We need systemic, structural changes to address that," she said.

On Friday, asked whether she would include Native-Americans in her support for reparations, Warren answered, "I think it’s a part of the conversation. It’s an important part of the conversation."

Her fellow 2020 hopefuls Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro have come out in favor of reparations for African-Americans but have so far not gone as far as Warren in opening the door to reparations for Native-Americans.

#9  Actually federal courts have been dealing with just this issue for many decades. It seems the more knowledgeable tribes have been bringing up the issue with respect to treaties the USA madewith various tribes over the centuries, treaties the USA then gratuitously failed to honor. These old disputes are slowly & surely being litigated, money is being appropriated, and checks have been & will be sent out to tribal descendants of those who were basically robbed and cheated so long ago. Circa 2007 my sister & brother each got $12500 from court awards with respect to treaties dating back to 1837. Awards were tax free. I got zero due to red tape. Mother was on the list of recipients, but she died before the awards were finally made & so got zero. Tribes don't call these payments "reparations", but their just due for misfeasance, malfeasance and nonfeasance by the feds.

Boko Haram targets Nigeria troops in dawn raid on polling day
[PULSE.NG] A civilian militia source in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, told AFP "at least 13" blasts were heard throughout the city at dawn, some two hours before voting opened at 0700 GMT.

Residents also reported hearing the kabooms.

"Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
holy warriors attempted to enter the city but were intercepted," a security source told AFP.

"They resorted to firing RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) on the city. Attempts have been made to locate the source of the firing."

A second source said one of the kabooms occurred at the headquarters of the Nigerian Army 7th Division as troops were preparing to go out on operations.

"One soldier was killed and 20 were maimed. There were other kabooms at Maimalari barracks but there was no casualty," he added.

A fighter jet was seen flying over the city, and the source said troops were searching for the source of the fire.

Three mortar shells fell into an open rice field in the Teachers Village camp for people displaced by the conflict but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

But the army denied there had been any attack, saying the city was "calm and peaceful".

Borno state police commissioner Damien Chukwu acknowledged the sound of gunfire but said it was "for security purposes", insisting there was "no threat to public peace and order".

There have been growing fears of a major Boko Haram attack in the run-up to the election, given the jihadists' previous pledges to disrupt the poll.

Maiduguri is the birthplace of Boko Haram and has been repeatedly attacked during its nearly 10-year insurgency that has devastated the remote region.

Army chief warns India against ‘misadventure’
[DAWN] Army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa, during a visit to the Line of Control (LoC) on Friday, warned India against aggression, saying any misadventure would receive resolute response from his troops.

Gen Bajwa visited the LoC to review the state of preparedness and morale of the troops, a day after the National Security Committee authorised the armed forces to respond to any Indian aggression with full force. The top commander’s visit signalled the highest level of preparedness to the adversary.

War hysteria in India in the aftermath of last week’s attack on Indian security forces in occupied Kashmir’s Pulwama area has led to fears that India may undertake military action to deflect public attention from internal problems.

Speaking to the troops on the frontlines in Chirikot and Bagsar sectors, Gen Bajwa said: "Pakistain is a peace-loving country but we will not be intimidated or coerced. Any aggression or misadventure shall be paid back in same coin".

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was wondering if Buck was okay. He suspected he wasn't...
military front man Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, while addressing a presser at the Inter-Services Public Relations office, said in case India started aggression against Pakistain it would be surprised by the level of response it would get from the Pak armed forces.

In a message directed at Indian military planners, the front man said: "Be rest assured, should you initiate any aggression. First, you shall never be able to surprise us. We are ready. In response we shall for sure surprise you."

Talking of deployment at forward locations, Gen Ghafoor said Pak troops "shall have superior force ratio at decisive points". He cautioned the Indian army against underestimating Pak defence, saying: "Never think that we shall fall short of capacity. ... We have the ways and means for the end state."

He said Pak armed forces were "ready to respond to full spectrum threat" and in the event of Indian aggression, "shall dominate the escalation ladder".

Navy Ships Will Again Fly the Union Jack as US Enters Great Power Competition
For the first time in nearly 17 years, bright blue Union Jack flags commemorating a pivotal World War II battle will again fly high on Navy ships -- a move meant to symbolize U.S. naval might as adversaries pose new threats across the globe.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson announced the change to the Navy's official maritime flag on Thursday. The blue Union Jack flag, which features 50 white stars representing each state, will return to jackstaffs on June 4 in honor of the historic Battle of Midway.

"Make no mistake: we have entered a new era of competition," Richardson said in a statement. "We must recommit to the core attributes that made us successful at Midway: integrity, accountability, initiative and toughness."

The Union Jack will officially replace the First Navy Jack, the service's current maritime flag that features red and white stripes with a rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on Me." Navy ships began flying that flag in place of the Union Jack on Sept. 11, 2002, while fighting the Global War on Terror.

Sailors around the world will raise the Union Jack on all Navy ships at morning colors on June 4, according to Navy administrative message 039/19, which was signed by Richardson and details the changes.

There's just one exception: Only the Navy's oldest deployable warship -- the amphibious-command ship Blue Ridge -- will be allowed to fly the First Navy Jack.

"The Navy will reestablish the custom in which the commissioned ship in active status having the longest total period in active status, other than USS Constitution, will display the First Navy Jack until decommissioned or transferred to inactive status," Richardson wrote.

A version of the Union Jack first flew in 1777 and was updated with new white stars as more states joined the union. It symbolizes "the cumulative strength of our nation and of our Navy, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts," Richardson said.

Displaying the flag is also a nod to the sea service's rich heritage.

"A version of the Union Jack flew when Commodore [Matthew] Perry formally established relations with the Empire of Japan. A version of the Union Jack flew in harbors around the world as the Great White Fleet circumnavigated the globe. A version of the Union Jack flew in ports throughout the Pacific as the Navy island-hopped its way across the vast ocean, and in the Atlantic as the Navy supported operations to liberate the European continent," Richardson said.

The Navy is a symbol that projects American values to the world, he added.

"For more than 240 years, the Union Jack, flying proudly from jackstaffs aboard U.S. Navy warships, has symbolized these strengths," Richardson said.

The new policy won't affect those who wear the First Navy Jack patch as an optional component on certain Navy working uniforms, according to the administrative message.

The war will go on as long as there are jihadis trying to conquer us from within and without, Herb. Pay the cost or be conquered — there are no other choices. We fought against fascism for about half a decade, against Communism until the Berlin Wall fell according toone perspective, or until North Korea gives up its nuclear weapons by another. But until the Muslim jihad is shivered into particles of dust the war will continue, the only question being how efficiently and effectively it is fought.

Iran and the fine art of evading sanctions
Selling the nation’s patrimony? How fortunate, then, that there is so many thousands of years of it.
[Ynet] With US penalties now back in place, Islamic Theocratic Republic looks to art market both as revenue stream and as way of advancing its ideological agenda while simultaneously legitimizing itself on world stage.

As Iran continues to bear the brunt of punishing economic sanctions imposed by the United States, the regime is exploring creative new ways to raise much-needed capital. Among the strategies: exporting art.

"The international sanctions against Iran exclude cultural products," Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Seyyed Abbas Salehi was quoted by Jordanian media as saying last week during a festival in Tehran. "We should take the export of art products seriously and use this opportunity."

Iraq
Iraq defence chief denies formation of Kirkuk joint ops center
No, no! Perish the thought!
[Rudaw] Kirkuk does not have a new joint operations room excluding the Kurdish Peshmerga ‐ merely a headquarters mobilizing armed forces operating in the disputed city, the Iraqi Defense Ministry clarified on Saturday.

"First of all, what has been set up is not a joint operations center but the headquarters of the Kirkuk’s Joint Operations Command," Brig. Yahya Rasool, commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, clarified to Rudaw.

Over the weekend, the head of the Kirkuk Joint Operations Command caused outrage among Kurdish officials when he said a joint operations center had been established in Kirkuk composed of different army units ‐ but excluding the Kurdish Peshmerga.

"The formation of a forward headquarters of Joint Operations Command in Kirkuk is for the purpose of unity in commands," Lt. Gen. Saad Harbiyah had told Rudaw.

Responding to this revelation, Kurdish officials called the move illegal and promised to appeal to Baghdad to reverse the plan and form a new force.

"There are a number of legal and constitutional errors in establishing this operation room in Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
" Shakhawan Abdullah, a member of the Kirkuk Normalization Committee, told Rudaw. "For example, members of that force are aliens and not natives to the city."

Seeking to clarify his subordinate’s comments, Brig. Rasool said: "Concerning the Peshmerga, we have a coordinating committee for joint work. We are currently engaged in talks with the Peshmerga about some subjects."

"The first thing is to joint coordination center between us and the Peshmerga and mutual work at some places where there are Peshmerga front lines and ours to start campaigns to clear the areas where ISIS maintains a presence."

They have also begun field surveys to determine the best locations to establish joint bases for the Iraqi armed forces and the Peshmerga to begin operations against ISIS sleeper cells in the region, he said.

Talks are ongoing between the Peshmerga Ministry and the Iraqi Defense Ministry to delineate their lines, he added.

Noori Hama Ali, commander of the Peshmerga forces on the Pirde Front, an area where the Peshmerga and Iraqi army engaged in festivities after the events of October 16, 2017, told Rudaw that field surveys are still underway on multiple fronts between Erbil and Baghdad.

"We have started from Khanaqin all the way to the West Tigris. We are conducting the field surveys together. Once finished, the Peshmerga Ministry and the Iraqi Defense Ministry will sit and decide on the next stages," Ali explained.

He said the process is progressing "slowly" however due to ongoing mistrust.

"The kind of trust we want has not yet been rebuilt in order for our forces to mingle with theirs to fight against ISIS, the enemy of humanity, the people of Iraq and Kurdistan," he admitted.

Over the past month, Peshmerga and Iraqi forces have met three times.
