Afghanistan
US watchdog: Afghans may not be ready for ‘day after' peace
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ‐ Afghanistan may not be ready for peace unless it finds a way to reintegrate Taliban fighters into society, combat corruption and rein in the country’s runaway narcotics problem, a U.S. watchdog said Wednesday.

The warning by Washington’s Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, which monitors billions of dollars in U.S. aid to the country, came in the group’s new quarterly report that also discusses Afghan needs for the "day after" ‐ once there is a peace deal with the Taliban.

Over the past months, the U.S. has stepped up efforts to find a peaceful resolution to Afghanistan’s 17-year war and has been holding talks with a resurgent Taliban. The insurgents, however, refuse to negotiate with the Kabul government, which they consider a U.S. puppet. The Taliban also continue to stage near-daily attacks, inflicting staggering casualties, and now control about half the country.

"No matter how welcome peace would be, it can carry with it the seeds of unintended and unforeseen consequences," John F. Sopko, head of SIGAR, said in the report.

The war has already cost America $737 billion, according to the Pentagon. On reconstruction alone, the U.S. has spent $132 billion since 2002, much of that to train and equip Afghan security forces, as well as strengthen government institutions, provide education and better health care, said Sopko.

But the gains are fragile, Sopko said, and solutions are needed to the country’s increasing insecurity, "endemic corruption, weak Afghan institutions, the insidious impact of the narcotics trade, and inadequate coordination and oversight by donors."

Sopko said that failure to reintegrate the estimated 60,000 Taliban fighters and their families into Afghan society would undermine peace.

Vandals decapitate World War 1 'silent soldier' statue
[Express] West Parley residents were shocked to discover one of their ’silent soldiers’, located on one of the village’s main road, was defaced last week. The vandalism “upset numerous residents”, forcing the Dorset village’s parish council to remove the damaged statue. Great care had been taken to choose the location of the statue before it was damaged and children had laid a poppy dedication under each of the ‘silent soldiers’.

Europe
French police clash with May Day protesters on Paris streets
PARIS (AP) ‐ French police clashed with stone-throwing protesters who set fires and smashed up vehicles as thousands of people gathered for May Day rallies Wednesday under tight security. About 165 arrests were made.

Police repeatedly used tear gas to try to control the crowd gathering near Paris’ Montparnasse train station for the main protest. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were injured. One bandaged-up man with a head wound was helped away from the scene by paramedics.

Associated Press reporters saw groups of hooded, black-clad people shouting anti-police slogans, mixing with other protesters wearing yellow vests or waving union flags.

Some threw rocks and other objects at police officers, attacked a parked van in a nearby street, kicking the vehicle and breaking its windows.

Paris police said officers carried out more than 9,000 "preventive searches" of bags and arrested 165 people before the march.

Meanwhile, some peaceful protesters were waiting for the march to start. They were planning to head toward Place d’Italie in southern Paris.

French authorities have warned "radical activists" may join the Paris demonstration and renew scenes of violence that marked previous yellow vest protests and May Day demonstrations in the past two years.

More than 7,400 police are deployed in the French capital.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Rare conviction of black cop in shooting spurs race concerns
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ‐ After three weeks of testimony, a jury needed little more than a day to convict a black Minneapolis police officer of murder in the fatal shooting of an unarmed white woman who had called 911 to report a possible crime, delivering a guilty verdict that immediately sparked questions about whether race played a role.

Mohamed Noor was also convicted Tuesday of manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond , a 40-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia whose death bewildered and angered people in both countries.

Noor, 33, testified that he and his partner heard a loud bang on their squad car that startled them, and that he fired "to stop the threat" after he saw a woman appear at his partner’s window raising her arm. Prosecutors questioned whether the bang happened and attacked Noor for not seeing a weapon or Damond’s hands before he fired.

It’s rare for police officers to be convicted after asserting they fired in a life-or-death situation, but some Minnesota community members said they saw it coming for Noor because he is Somali American.

"Officer Noor was going to jail no matter what because he’s a black man who shot a white woman in the state of Minnesota," said John Thompson, an activist and friend of Philando Castile, a black man who was killed in 2016 by a Latino suburban police officer who was acquitted.

I'm thinking it did. Next would be a civil lawsuit charging that the hiring acts and best practices were intentionally lowered or even waived in order to give this guy a job. Also interesting would be discovery of everyone involved in the application and hiring process of Calamity Noor.

#4  This John Thompson character is just stirring the you-know-what. My experience with Somalis is that they *don't* integrate into the larger American black population for a variety of reasons (some quite understandable). In return, the traditional black population mostly considers them "other" in return. So, no: outside of the activist class, most black people aren't going to care about this IMO.

Partly because they, like Arabs and Ethiopians, consider themselves suntanned Caucasians, not black. Though in America they'll accept the black label when jostling for perks.

Sure. I would too, given the situation. I meant more that they were typically sober and hardworking with largely intact families. I got a straight-outa-Rantburg rant from a Somali cab driver in Columbus that would put a smile on the face of everyone here.

BTW not saying that many black Americans aren't these things as well (sober, hardworking, etc). Just that poor Midwestern urban areas often contain people who aren't, and I think Somalis want to be separate from that if possible.

#7  2015: Feds' relocation of Somali refugees stresses Minn. welfare, raises terror fears
Even though Minnesota has a good job market, that doesn’t seem to have translated into jobs for the Somali refugees. #13  Meaning they're working, but off-the-books?

Could be. I mentioned to an old friend of mine - a veteran cabbie of many years - that the Somali cab drivers in Columbus and Indianapolis seemed to be giving way to Ugandans and Kenyans. He thinks that the Somali's have either moved up to working for Lyft and Uber, or have made enough to move up the economic ladder to shopkeepers and the like. Which is pretty much the American was of things IMO.

Senators blast 'insane' Trump plan for baksheesh foreign aid cuts
[Reuters] Republican and Democratic U.S. senators blasted President Donald Trump's proposal for a 23 percent cut in the U.S. budget for foreign aid and diplomacy as "insane" and "short-sighted" on Tuesday, and said it would not pass.

"We're not going to approve this budget reduction. It's insane. It makes no sense," said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that oversees the State Department and foreign aid budget.

"I don't know who writes these things over in the White House, but they clearly don't understand the value of soft power," the Republican senator, a close Trump ally on many issues, told a subcommittee hearing on the foreign aid budget.

Graham also called the plan "short-sighted" and said the Appropriations panel would restore funding to previous levels, rather than enacting the 23 percent cut Trump proposed earlier this year.

Graham also asked Mark Green, the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, to send Congress a plan for how it would assist Venezuela in case of a change in government in the troubled South American state.

The hearing took place on Tuesday against a backdrop of upheaval in Venezuela, where Washington's desire to ship in millions of dollars in foreign aid has been a central theme of the Trump administration's push for a change in government.

Caster Semenya: Olympic 800m champion loses appeal against IAAF testosterone rules
[BBC] Caster Semenya has lost a landmark case against athletics' governing body meaning it will be allowed to restrict testosterone levels in female runners.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) rejected the South African's challenge against the IAAF's new rules.

But Cas said it had "serious concerns as to the future practical application" of the regulations.

Semenya, 28, had said the rules were "unfair" and that she wanted to "run naturally, the way I was born".

Now the Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion at 800m - and other athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) - must either take medication in order to compete in track events from 400m to the mile, or change to another distance.

Cas found that the rules for athletes with DSD were discriminatory - but that the discrimination was "necessary, reasonable and proportionate" to protect "the integrity of female athletics".

Why Is Ilhan Omar's Collusion With Islamists Acceptable?
[The Federalist] Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has distinguished herself with often offensive, outrageous, and unpatriotic rhetoric. One week she invokes classic anti-Jewish tropes. The next she trivializes the September 11 jihadist attacks. Another it is unearthed that she espouses morally relativistic if not overtly anti-American views about U.S. soldiers, the very ones who fought to defend civilians in her native Somalia to boot.

Omar’s penchant for provoking millions of Americans with odious words has masked the related, equally if not more troubling, elements of her associations, ideology, and background.

CONSIDER OMAR’S MEETING WITH TURKEY’S PRESIDENT
Consider, for example, the revelation, largely unnoticed outside of conservative media, that as a Minnesota Assemblywoman Omar had a closed-press meeting in fall 2017 with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to a curiously now-deleted article from the local Somalian-language periodical in her district, the Tusmo Times, she and the Islamist authoritarian president met during his U.N. General Assembly visit to New York.

Per one account, they discussed: "issues involving Omar’s native Somalia and issues for Somalis in Minnesota. She [Omar] thanked Erdogan for Turkey’s support for the Rohingya people in Myanmar. The two also discussed investment and trade between Turkey and Somalia. The meeting ended with Erdogan asking Omar to voice her support for Turkey. The report concludes by adding that Omar not only met with Erdogan, but also with the Turkish prime minister and other senior Turkish officials."

A political-media establishment frenzied over foreign influence might ask many questions about this meeting, such as: Why did a state lawmaker have it? Was it appropriate for her to be discussing Turkish-Somali relations as an American representative? On whose behalf was she speaking? Did anyone bless this meeting at the federal level, and on what grounds? Did Omar have any reservations about meeting with President Erdogan given the totalitarian, bellicose, and bigoted nature of his regime? What do Omar’s Democratic colleagues at the national level make of this meeting?
Lengthy article.

Schiff makes criminal referral to DOJ for Erik Prince
[Politico] House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Tuesday made a criminal referral to the Justice Department for Erik Prince based on evidence that "strongly indicates" the Trump ally lied to Congress.

In a letter to Attorney General William Barr, Schiff claimed Prince, the billionaire founder of a military contracting firm, intentionally misled the House Intelligence Committee and impaired their probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Schiff wrote the publication of the Mueller report shed light on discrepancies between Prince's interview with the special counsel and his testimony before the committee in November 2017, when he denied he was attempting to establish a back channel between Russia and Trump during the president’s transition.

"Mr. Prince’s false statements hindered the Committee’s ability to fully understand and examine foreign efforts to undermine our political process and national security, develop appropriate legislative and policy remedies to counter future malign influence operations targeting campaigns and presidential transitions, and inform the American public, as appropriate," Schiff wrote in the letter.

Schiff highlighted six instances in which information revealed about Prince in the Mueller report diverged from his testimony before the committee. He homed in on Prince's meeting with a Russian banker who is reportedly close to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Seychelles islands in January 2017, an encounter Prince later told congressional officials took place purely by chance.

Alabama bill banning nearly all abortions passes House almost unanimously
[The Hill] A bill in Alabama banning nearly all abortions in the state passed the House of Representatives Tuesday with only three lawmakers voting against the measure.

State Rep. Terri Collins (R), a sponsor of the measure, said the bill is intended to go all the way up to the Supreme Court and challenge Roe V. Wade, currently the law of the land making abortions legal.

If passed, the bill would would criminalize abortions in all cases unless the health of the pregnant person was in danger and make it a Class C felony for a doctor to perform the procedure, according to Al.com.

The bill also does not include any exceptions for cases where rape or incest caused the pregnancy. The measure passed by a vote of 74-3.

While several Democratic lawmakers attempted to add amendments to the bill, such as adding an exception for rape or incest, Collins said none would be accepted due to the fact she wants the bill to be used to overturn Roe V. Wade.

"We decided it was time to address the actual issue, which was ’do we want to allow abortion in our country’ and maybe ask the Supreme Court to revisit their decision so long ago with so little technology we have right now," Collins previously told Al.com

The local news outlet reports the American Civil Liberties Union chapter of Alabama plans to challenge the bill in court if it becomes law.

"The people of Alabama are paying the bill for unconstitutional legislation and we hope that the Senate members will realize its detrimental impact and stop this bill from becoming law, a statement from the ACLU read. "Otherwise it will be challenged in federal court."

Libyan Air Strikes Kill Four, Wound 37
[AnNahar] Air raids on Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Sunday night killed four people and maimed 37, Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA) said Monday, blaming the attacks on strongman Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
's self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA).

This came a day after a similar attack on the capital killed another four civilians and injured 20, according to the GNA.

Haftar's LNA launched an offensive against Tripoli, the seat of the internationally-recognised GNA, on April 4.

After initial gains, Haftar's forces have encountered stiff resistance on the southern outskirts and his troops have been pushed back in some areas.

At least 278 people have been killed and more than 1,300 maimed in the festivities, according to a toll released Wednesday by the World Health Organization.

The GNA accuses Haftar of using foreign planes to carry out air strikes, without naming a country of origin.

After Sunday's raids, "public hospitals received four dead people -- three civilians and a soldier, and 37 maimed, Amin al-Hachemi, a front man for the GNA health ministry told AFP.

"The toll may rise given that victims have been transported to private hospitals."

The parts of Tripoli struck were Abou Slim, a densely-populated residential area in the south, and Ain Zara, a southern suburb that has seen several violent festivities in recent weeks.

A front man for the LNA confirmed Saturday's strikes on the capital, but said they were aimed at military targets.

"The capital is experiencing an escalation in the military offensive, war crimes, and indiscriminate bombings of residential areas, public facilities and infrastructure," Mohanad Younes, a front man for the GNA, said on the government's Facebook page.

"Unmanned foreign planes participated in these raids, the latest ones having hit homes in Ain Zara and Abou Slim," said Younes.

The responsibility for these acts, he added, rests "with the states which support the belligerent forces of the criminal Haftar".

Haftar's offensive has sharpened fault lines in policy towards Libya among world powers.

On April 18, Russia and the United States opposed a British bid backed by La Belle France and Germany at the UN Security Council to demand a ceasefire in the North African country.

The White House revealed the next day that Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
had reached out personally to Haftar in a phone call, during which the US president "recognised Field Marshal Haftar's significant role in fighting terrorism and securing Libya's oil resources".

The country has been mired in chaos since the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
-backed uprising that deposed and killed dictator Moamer Qadaffy in 2011.

UAE Sentences Turk to Life for Links to Syria Islamists
[AnNahar] The United Arab Emirates' supreme court upheld a life sentence against a Ottoman Turkish citizen for promoting Islamist groups in Syria and transferring funds out of the Gulf state, state media reported.

The supreme court in Abu Dhabi upheld the life sentence of the 49-year-old Ottoman Turkish citizen for "launching an extensive campaign on a Facebook account named 'Ali Ozturk Mehmet' without getting an official permit" to promote "the ideologies of the two terrorist groups and sending them funds through money transfer companies in the UAE", the state news agency WAM said.

Air strikes, roadblocks trap civilians in Tripoli
[DAWN] Libyan forces loyal to a former military commander have intensified their air strikes on Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, where heavy fighting and blocked roads have left civilians trapped in their homes, officials said on Monday.

Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter’s self-styled Libyan National Army launched an operation to retake the capital on April 4 and has been locked in heavy fighting in and around the city with militias loosely allied with a UN-supported government. The festivities have killed more than 270 people, including 21 civilians, according to the latest UN figures released last week.

Libyan officials said LNA air strikes have targeted the Nawasi Brigade in the Abu Salim district, about 7 kilometres from Tripoli’s centre. At least four non-combatants were killed, they said.

They said air strikes hit Al Qaqaa military camp in the town of al-Falah, south of Tripoli. The camp is controlled by powerful militias from the western town of Misrata that are also allied with the Tripoli government. Air strikes and shelling also hit the towns of Khallet al-Forjan, Ain Zara and al-Twaisha, south of the capital, and heavy fighting was underway in Salah al-Deen, an area that saw earlier festivities between rival militias in September.Residents said fighting has been ongoing overnight in residential areas a few kilometers south of Tripoli. Both sides have used heavy artillery and Arclight airstrikes, they said.

"We cannot move because of the shelling from both sides. Our homes have been damaged. We are trying to leave the area to a safer place," said Mohammed al-Trapoulsi, a 41-year-old father of three from Abu Salim.

On Sunday, LNA front man Ahmed al-Mosmari told a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi that their warplanes targeted the Yarmuk military camp in Ain Zara. The two sides have traded control the strategic camp since the offensive began.

Bill to be introduced for ensuring women's right to inherit property
[DAWN] Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan on Tuesday said that a bill that seeks to enforce women's rights to property will be introduced by the government to help ensure women get their due share in inheritance.
"As long as an adult male makes the right decisions as trustee"
Awan was addressing a news conference along with Minister of Water Resources Faisal Vawda after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
She said that the government wanted to provide women with their fair share in inheritance and ensure that they are not cheated out of their rights.

Citing other discussions from the cabinet meeting, she said amendments in the code of civil procedure will help decide the civil cases swiftly. Similarly, the succession certificates will now be issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and heirs would be able to procure them within two weeks, instead of going through courts for years.

Family of Palestinian ‘Emirati spy’ disputes Turkish suicide claim
More on this story from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Zaki Mubarak’s relatives accuses The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

of covering up his liquidation, call for international investigation and autopsy.

The family of a Paleostinian found dead in a Ottoman Turkish prison after being accused of spying for the United Arab Emirates demanded an investigation Tuesday.

Members of Zaki Mubarak’s
...yesterday’s report named him as Zaki Y.M. Hassan...
family said they had been officially informed of the 55-year-old’s death in a Ottoman Turkish prison, with authorities saying he had did away with himself.

"We want an international investigation and an autopsy to reveal the facts, but the Ottoman Turkish authorities want to hide the truth," his brother Zain al-Dain said.

Relatives would not begin the mourning period until they knew, he said.

"I spoke to him a week ago and he was in high spirits insisting he would be released because he didn’t accept any of the false charges against him," his sister Sanaa Mubarak abu Sbitan said.

"I know my brother Zaki and he would never commit suicide. This is a plot created by Turkey to cover up the liquidation."

Zaki, a former member of the Paleostinian intelligence services, left the Gazoo Strip in 2007 after Islamists Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, seized control of the enclave, Zain al-Dain said.

He had since been based in Bulgaria and Turkey.

Ottoman Turkish state news agency Anadolu said the man, who it did not name, was found dead in Silivri prison, on the outskirts of Istanbul, with prosecutors later saying he was found hanged.

He had been taken into custody with another alleged spy and later formally charged with "military and political" and "international espionage," according to Anadolu.

The circumstances of the incident were unclear but media had speculated he was allied to Mohammed Dahlan, a former ally and now rival to Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

He said the body of a border policeman who lost his life in the kaboom has been shifted to hospital.

Gaza balloon sparks blaze near kibbutz in south
[IsraelTimes] A balloon-borne incendiary device launched from the Gazoo Strip sparks a fire in southern Israel, the fire department says.

"A team of firefighters worked to put out a brushfire caused by a balloon in the Gazoo area, near one of the kibbutzes," a spokesperson for the department’s southern district says in a statement.

The blaze occurred outside Kibbutz Nahal Oz in the Sha’ar Hanegev region. It was extinguished by a team of volunteers, the fire department says.

Throughout the day, Paleostinians in the Gazoo Strip have been launching balloons carrying incendiary devices into southern Israel in an apparent violation of an unofficial ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and terror groups in the enclave.

Death Panels: Fresh criminal investigation launched into hundreds of deaths at Gosport War Memorial Hospital
[Telegraph] Dr Jane Barton claimed she was doing her best for her patients
The retired doctor, at the centre of the Gosport War Memorial Hospital scandal, could face murder charges over the deaths of hundreds of patients who were needlessly given powerful opiate painkillers, the police have said.

A total of 456 people had their lives cut short and another 200 were "probably" given drugs without medical justification between 1987 and 2001.

An official inquiry last year concluded that Dr Jane Barton, 71, who worked at the hospital between 1988 and 2000, had presided over an "institutionalised regime" which had a flagrant "disregard for human life".

A damning report revealed how patients who were viewed as a "nuisance" were given opiates via syringe drivers, often resulting in their deaths within days.

Three previous police investigations have failed to bring anyone to justice, but yesterday senior officers vowed to get to the bottom of the scandal and determine whether the prescribing of the opiates led directly to patient deaths.

Trump vows to unleash 1,800 ISIS prisoners held in Syria
And by vow they mean warn.
[Rudaw] If European allies of the international anti-ISIS coalition do not repatriate suspected Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) members, US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
warned nearly 2,000 of these "dangerous prisoners" could be let loose.

"We have 1,800 ISIS prisoners taken hostage in our final battles to destroy 100 percent of the Caliphate in Syria. Decisions are now being made as to what to do with these dangerous prisoners..." Trump tweeted on Tuesday

Most of the prisoners are held in Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) facilities in Syria. The SDF repeatedly has said it lacks the resources to hold trials. French newspaper Le Monde has reported 800 Western men, 700 women, and some 1,500 of their children are estimated to be held in SDF camps.
President Trump is transactional, guys. He laid out the maximal position. Now you need to make a counteroffer.
"...European countries are not helping at all, even though this was very much done for their benefit. They are refusing to take back prisoners from their specific countries. Not good!" Trump added.

The SDF, the partnered ground force of the US-led international coalition, continue to detain suspected faceless myrmidons in once-liberated areas.

"Special units" from the SDF tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
members of a "terrorist cell" east of Raqqa, its Press Office head, Mustafa Bali, announced on Monday.

Bali added two of the arrested were suspected of planting improvised bombs (IEDs) in Raqqa city.

There is no established Western policy for dealing with the suspects. The United Kingdom has said it won't risk diplomats' lives by travelling to Syria.

The United States has repatriated the few US nationals who joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Other European countries are torn because they lack capital punishment and believe their nationals have the right to a trial.

Additionally, the Europeans are concerned authorities in Syria lack the tools to conduct fair trials which would also reveal key details about the way the group operates and the fate of groups they like the Yezidis.

Most European nationals joining ISIS in Iraq and Syria came from La Belle France, followed by Germany, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, the London-based International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation found in a study released in July 2018.

Human rights activist lawyer Amal Clooney argued on April 23 before the UN Security Council that several options are available for the West to get justice for victims of sexual violence committed by ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Trump threatens full and complete embargo of Cuba for meddling in Venezuela
[Miami Herald] As his Cabinet members pledged the administration’s support for Juan Guaidó, President Donald Trump used his favorite bully pulpit to target the Cuban government for its role in Venezuela.

Trump warned of “a full and complete embargo, together with highest-level sanctions” against the Havana government if the Cuban military does not immediately cease operations “for the purpose of causing death and destruction to the Constitution of Venezuela.”

“Hopefully, all Cuban soldiers will promptly and peacefully return to their island!” Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

A senior administration official told McClatchy on Tuesday there has long been a need to strengthen implementation of the Cuban embargo, which had become weakened over the years.

“We haven’t spoken that way about Cuba in a very long time,” the official said. “These recent comments from the president are a very strong pivot against the Communist regime in Havana.”

The official warned they also send a message to Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega for his work backing the Venezuelan regime.

National Security Advisor John Bolton has called the three countries a ”Troika of Tyranny” led by “clowns” and that the United States “looks forward to watching” their governments fall.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Maduro had been preparing to fly to Cuba on Tuesday, but was convinced by Russian officials to remain.

"Iraq since September 2018 through a special cell formed with US Special Operations Command has been monitoring, looking for al-Baghdadi. They have up to now succeeded in eliminating 13 out of 17 possible locations," Hashmi told Rudaw English on Wednesday.

The possible locations could be the deserts of Iraq’s western Anbar, Iraq’s Wadi Houran ‐ a riverbed in Anbar ‐ or in Syria’s east central Homs desert. StaceyTank Abrams Says She's Not Running For The Senate In 2020
[Yahoo] Stacey Abrams, who made history last year as the first Black woman to win a major party's nomination for governor, announced Tuesday morning that she won't run for the U.S. Senate in 2020.

The news follows months of speculation around Abrams' next steps after narrowly losing the contentious Georgia gubernatorial race.

"I am so grateful for all of the support and encouragement I have received from fellow Georgians, to leaders of Congress and beyond," Abrams said in a video posted on Twitter. "However, the fights to be waged require a deep commitment to the job, and I do not see the U.S. Senate as the best role for me in this battle for our nation’s future." She added she would support whoever ends up challenging Republican Sen. David Perdue, a first-term incumbent.
"The best rolls for me are at Cinnabun. I will be there"
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other national Democratic leaders have aggressively courted Abrams, who has long been a political rising star, over the past few months. Besides being considered as a potential Senate candidate, Abrams was also floated as the potential running mate of former Vice President Joe Biden. (No deal was made with Biden, who announced his presidential bid last week.)

ISIS terrorists heading to Afghanistan from Syria and Iraq to plot attacks
[KhaamaPress] The ISIS faceless myrmidons are heading to Afghanistan from Iraq and Syria after the collapse of the self-proclaimed caliphate in the Middle East, it has been reported.

A U.S. official has told AFP that ISIS faceless myrmidons are heading to Afghanistan to continue their jihad and plot ’spectacular’ attacks against the United States.

A senior U.S. intelligence official in Kabul has told AFP "We know some have already made their way back here and are trying to transfer the knowledge, skills and experience they learned over there."

The official speaking on the condition of anonymity has further added that "If we don’t continue counterterrorism pressure against (IS in Afghanistan), there will be an attack in our homeland ‐ and a spectacular attack ‐ probably within the year."

This comes as both Afghan and U.S. forces are busy conduct regular operations and Arclight airstrikes against the terror group in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
, Kunar, and other restive provinces in which the group has a presence.

The latest UN report suggest that the terror group has between 2,500 and 4,000 fighters in Afghanistan, according to AFP.

The group grabbed credit for a coordinated attack on Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Kabul city which left at least ten people dead and several others maimed.

[IsraelTimes] While death is among the possible punishments in PA penal code for such offenses, Abbas has not signed off on any executions since 2006.

A Paleostinian Authority court that convened in Nablus on Wednesday sentenced a Paleostinian to five years in prison for attempting to sell land to Israeli Jews.

"The Grand Criminal Court that met in Nablus sentenced... M.Y.M, to five years in prison on charges of attempting to cut off part of the Paleostinian lands and [sell] it to a foreign state," a memo on the PA Higher Judicial Council’s website said, only identifying the convict by his initials.

An official in the PA judiciary council said M.Y.M. attempted to sell land in the West Bank to Israeli Jews.

"He attempted to leak land to Israelis, which is in violation of the law," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Times of Israel, using the Arabic term to allude to selling land to Israeli Jews.

Paleostinian law considers attempting to sell or selling land to Israeli Jews a punishable offense.

According to the law, possible punishments for trying to sell or selling land to Israeli Jews include various degrees of hard labor and imprisonment as well as execution.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
the law requires that PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
approve any death sentence, and he has not signed off on any executions since 2006.

"The president does not approve execution sentences," Hassan al-Aouri, Abbas’s former legal adviser, said in a phone call in November 2018.

The Paleostinians maintain that selling land in the West Bank to Israeli Jews undermines their efforts to establish a state that they hope will include the territory.

Philip Morris gets FDA nod to begin selling new tobacco device
[The Hill] The Food and Drug Administration will allow Philip Morris International to sell a new tobacco device that’s designed as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

The iQOS is a small pen-like electronic device that heats a stick of tobacco, rather than burning it, making the vapor less harmful than smoke from traditional cigarettes.

The tobacco stick also sets the device apart from electronic cigarettes, which utilize a nicotine-laced liquid that allows users to inhale much stronger levels of nicotine and tobacco than a traditional cigarette.

FDA said allowing the device to be sold is "appropriate for the protection of the public health because ... the products produce fewer or lower levels of some toxins than combustible cigarettes."

The FDA review took nearly two years to complete, highlighting the public health debate over the device.

Harold Wimmer, president and CEO of the American Lung Association said the group is "deeply concerned" about the health impacts of the new product, and urged FDA to "carefully monitor how this product is actually being used ‐ and by whom."

The agency noted that even though the device is now legally allowed to be sold, "it does not mean these products are safe. All tobacco products are potentially harmful and addictive and those who do not use tobacco products should continue not to."

StarLink sat network begins mass launches this month.
[Teslarati] According to an official statement, SpaceX’s satellite mass production is “well underway” and the first batch of operational Starlink satellites are already in Florida for their May 2019 launch debut.

Simultaneously, the FCC has granted SpaceX’s request to modify the deployment of its first 1584 Starlink satellites, permitting the company to lower their orbit from approximately 1150 km to 550 km (715 mi to 340 mi). A lower insertion orbit should improve Falcon 9’s maximum Starlink payload, while the lower operational orbit will help to further minimize any risk posed by orbital debris that could be generated by failed SpaceX satellites.

Above all else, SpaceX’s confirmation that the first batch of Starlink satellites are already in Florida drives home the reality that the company’s internet satellite constellation is about to become very real. Said constellation has long been the subject of endless skepticism and criticism, dominated by a general atmosphere of dismissal. There is no doubt that Starlink, as proposed, is an extraordinarily ambitious program that will cost billions of dollars to even begin to realize. SpaceX will have to find ways to affordably manufacture and launch ~11,900 satellites – together weighing something like 500 metric tons (1.1 million lbs) – in as few as nine years, start to finish.

Airstrikes kill 17 Taliban militants in Ghazni and Uruzgan provinces

[KhaamaPress] At least seventeen Taliban militants were killed in separate airstrikes which were conducted in south-eastern Ghazni and southern Uruzgan provinces, informed military sources said Tuesday.

The sources further added that 6 of the militants were killed in Deh Yak district of Ghazni province while 11 others were killed in Tarin Kot city, the provincial capital of Uruzgan province.

“Airstrikes in Deh Yak district of Ghazni province today killed 6 Taliban fighters. Airstrikes in Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan killed 11 Taliban fighters,” the sources said.

The anti-government armed militants including Taliban have not commented regarding the casualties inflicting on their militants.

Both Ghazni and Uruzgan provinces are among the relatively volatile provinces in southern and south-eastern parts of Afghanistan.

Taliban militants are active in some of the restive and remote districts of the two province where they often attempt to carry out terrorist related activities against the government and security institutions.

Taliban’s weapons and explosives smuggler killed in Ghazni airstrike

[KhaamaPress] A Taliban weapons and explosives smuggler was killed by an airstrike in Andar district, Ghazni province.

Informed military sources said Monday that the weapons and explosives smuggler of Taliban was killed on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

“The coordinator who went by the name, Jalalzal was in charge of smuggling and suppling weapons to Taliban fighters in order to commit horrific suicide and vehicle explosions, which is a prime example that the Taliban’s actions prove they have chosen violence instead of peace,” the sources said.

The military officials also added that Jalalzal encouraged violence and would supply weapons and equipment to Taliban fighters at all cost. “He has consistently ignored the will of the Afghan people and their desire for peace.”

The anti-government armed militants including Taliban have not commented regarding the killing of Jalalzal so far.

Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated businessman Malek sentenced to 25 years in prison
And now he and his comrades can look forward to sitting in prison for years, while mandatory appeals wind their way through the system.
[AlAhram] A Cairo High State Security Emergency Criminal Court sentenced Hassan Malek, a businessman affiliated with the banned Moslem Brüderbund group, to 25 years in prison on Tuesday.

Malek, his son Hamza, and 22 others were accused of joining a terrorist group and plotting to harm the national economy by hoarding hard currency and smuggling it abroad. They were also charged with planning to assault police and army personnel.

Malik, Hamza, and five others were sentenced to 25 years, three defendants were sentenced to 10 years, and 14 were acquitted.

Malek’s assets have been frozen since September 2014, when a Cairo criminal court upheld a decision by the prosecutor-general to freeze the assets of prominent Moslem Brüderbund leaders.

Since the 1990s, Malek has been considered one of the most prominent Moslem Brüderbund businessmen along with his business partner, the now-tossed in the clink

Iraq
Charity: Iraq excludes 45,000 children born under ISIS rule
[Rudaw] An estimated 45,000 children in Iraq who were born under the rule of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group are being excluded from society because the government denies them documentation and ID papers, an international charity said Tuesday.

Jan Egeland, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s secretary general, is warning that these children ‐ most of whom are in camps for the displaced today ‐ are a "possible human time-bomb."

"Undocumented children risk remaining left on the margins of society if this issue is not addressed immediately. This seriously undermines future prospects of reconciliation efforts," said Egeland.

"We urge the government to ensure that undocumented children have the right to exist like any other Iraqi citizen," he added, citing the organization’s 38-page report "Barriers from Birth."

The children were born during IS’s 2013-2017 rule, when the bully boy group controlled nearly a third of Iraq. The Iraqi government today considers their birth certificates invalid because they were issued by IS.

After U.S.-backed forces defeated the IS and the murderous Moslems lost their self-styled "caliphate," many IS families and those of civilians who lived under the group’s rule were put in camps for the displaced.

The Norway-based group said its legal teams receive on average 170 requests for help each month in cases of unregistered children, children whose fathers are undocumented, are on one of the government’s security databases or are perceived to be affiliated with IS.

Egeland said the chance of obtaining ID documents for children from families accused of IS affiliation is nearly impossible, resulting in collective punishment of thousands of innocent children.

"Children are not responsible for crimes committed by their relatives, yet many are denied their basic rights as Iraqi citizens," he said.

Without ID papers, these children have no access to education or health care, they are not allowed to enroll in schools and their mothers cannot get badly needed aid ‐ they are denied "simply the right to exist," Egeland said.

Providing these children with such basic rights to education and health care is "key to ensuring a sustainable future for them and for the country," he said. "A society cannot be at peace if it allows a generation of stateless children in its midst."

#8  Just more of the propaganda about the 60's. Woodstock was a drug infested, squalor and I never understood why it is so mythical. I talked to several friends who took off and went to Woodstock and they said it was a completely nightmare.

The media looks to elevate the 60's when they nearly took down the Republic, turned over a highly strategic portion of southeast Asia to the Communists, and accelerated the consumption of drugs into the epidemic it is today.

I still would like to know if anyone has ever investigated the source of the money that allowed all of those demonstrators to travel and stay in hotels and organize.

PKK, Turkey claim 20 killed, injured in deadly week
[Rudaw] In a deadly week of festivities between Ottoman Turkish state forces and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), both sides claimed to have inflicted casualties. The PKK said they killed six Ottoman Turkish soldiers on both sides of the Kurdistan Region-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
border in activities during the past week, while the Ottoman Turkish Defence Ministry claimed to have hit 14 PKK guerrillas in a weekend Arclight airstrike in the Kurdistan Region.

The Peoples’ Defence Forces (HPG), the armed wing of the PKK, said they killed one soldier and injured another, and dealt a "crippling blow" to Ottoman Turkish army installations on Lelikan hill in the Sidakan area of northern Erbil province where the borders of Kurdistan Region, Turkey, and Iran meet.

The HPG launched an attack on Ottoman Turkish soldiers stationed there on Sunday afternoon, according to their statement, published on Tuesday.

Inside Turkey, HPG claimed to have killed five soldiers during an operation in Diyarbakir on Wednesday. The guerrillas also lost five of their own in the operation, they stated.

Turkey has not confirmed the deaths within their own ranks, but claimed to have "neutralized" 14 PKK fighters in airstrikes on Sunday. The Ottoman Turkish army uses the word neutralized to refer to those killed, maimed, or otherwise removed from the battlefield. Col. Tamer Zincir told news hounds on Monday that they hit PKK guerrillas in a cave in the Zab region of northern Duhok, Anadolu Agency reported.

HPG confirmed the Ottoman Turkish airstrikes, but denied the casualties.

Ottoman Turkish jets launched at least eight airstrikes against an alleged PKK position 32 kilometres northeast of Duhok city on Friday morning, a local confirmed to Rudaw, saying that this is the first time the conflict had reached that area.

Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes and military offensives against alleged PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region, where the group has its headquarters. The four-decade long conflict was reignited in 2015 after a grinding of the peace processor broke down.

At least 4,330 people have been killed since July 20, 2015, according to the International Crisis Group, which is tracking the conflict. Those killed include 1,144 state forces, 2,499 PKK fighters, 464 civilians, and 223 unidentified people.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was in Erbil on Monday, but his talks with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani focused on business and trade ties.

The government in Baghdad has called on Ottoman Turkish forces to withdraw from Iraqi territory and said no group should use Iraqi land to carry out attacks on its neighbours. The Kurdistan Regional Government has called on the PKK to leave the Region.
