-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
NOAA says tonight's 'cannibal' solar storm could be worst in 165 YEARS and cause GPS and power outages - as they reveal exact time it'll hit
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Earth could suffer the worst solar storm in 165 years as six streams of plasma that erupted from the sun this week are set to make crash into our atmosphere tonight.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed today that the worst-case scenario would be what happened during the 1859 Carrington event, which set telegraph stations on fire, cutting communications worldwide.

In our modern-day society, a geomagnetic storm of that magnitude could cause widespread electrical disruptions, blackouts and damage to critical infrastructure.

The event could also trigger magnificent nighttime auroras, or the northern lights, which will be visible in the US starting around 11pm ET and lasting through Saturday.

Scientists will know how severe the storm will be at around around 8 pm ET when the explosions of plasma racing through space will be nearly one million miles from our planet - and NOAA plans to issue alerts immediately.

Scientists have also predicted that three of the six streams, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), could combine to create a powerful 'cannibal CME.'

Geomagnetic storms take place when high-energy particles released from solar flares ejected by the sun reach Earth. The sun is continuously erupting and hurling particles into space, but given that its 93 million miles from Earth, it rarely reaches us.

'We anticipate we will get one shock after another. We are really buckling down here,' Clinton Wallace, director of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), said during the Friday media briefing.

While officials are predicting an event a step below than Carrington, which was a geomagnetic storm level 5 (G5), they are not discounting that we could reach a an event on the lower end of the same measurement that ranges from G1 to G5.

Dahl explained that 165 years ago, auroras reached as far as Central America and Hawaii. He said 'we can, of course, not discount that we could reach kind of a low end.'

When the sun emits a solar flare, it creates an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) similar to that of a nuclear bomb which in turn can disable or destroy all electronic equipment, including satellites.

Earth has been hit with one of the streams of plasma already, as a space weather psychists told DailyMail.com that there could be five more on the way. Dr Tamitha Skov said NASA's satellite captured CME, determining it was a geomagnetic storm level 4 (G4) that is moving more than 400 miles per second.

Skov said the storm could reach a G5 and as the other streams make their way toward Earth, she predicted things may not calm down until May 13.

Dahl said during the media event that he and NOAA 'have not seen this in a long time, which is why they are giving special attention.

'We have discussed this with FEMA because they need to know, not that we are expecting a catastrophic collapse.'

NOAA issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch late Thursday night, noting a a large sunspot cluster had produced several moderate to strong solar flares since Wednesday. Sunspots are cooler parts on the sun's surface caused by massive changes in our star's magnetic field. Often bigger than planets, sunspots appear dark on the sun's surface because they are cooler than other parts - although they're still very hot, around 6,500°F.

'This is an unusual and potentially historic event,' said Wallace.

NOAA said that people should prepare as they would for a power outage - batteries, flash lights and generators.

However, the agency has been in contact with infrastructure operators in preparation for the geomagnetic storm.

'[People] won't have to do anything. And if everything's working like it should, will be stable they'll be able to go about their their daily lives,' said Steenburgh.

'You may get to see a fairly impressive aurora display.'
BLUF: Probably pretty lights but nothing more.

Biden tells a lie a minute during CNN interview
[NY Post] The White House rarely allows President Biden to sit down for interviews, and Wednesday’s chat with CNN’s Erin Burnett shows why.

In a brief 17 minutes, Biden told 15 lies — nearly a lie a minute.

From whoppers about the economy to prevarications on Israel, Biden spun a Fantasyland of a presidency that voters know is false.
Here’s a rundown:

Report: Biden Admin Issued Sanctions Waiver on Arms Sales to Arab States Day Before Withholding Weapons From Israel
[LI] Less than a day before the Biden administration announced its intent to cut off U.S. arms sales to Israel, it issued a sanctions waiver to bypass congressional prohibitions on arms sales to a host of Arab nations that boycott the Jewish state, including Hamas ally Qatar and Iran-controlled Lebanon, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

On Tuesday—just a day before President Joe Biden threatened to withhold key weapons deliveries from Israel if the country moves forward with an incursion in the Gaza Strip's Rafah neighborhood—the State Department informed Congress that it intends to bypass laws that bar the United States from selling weapons to nations that boycott Israel, according to a copy of the notification obtained by the Free Beacon. ...

"The Biden administration's policy toward Israel and around the world is to punish our allies and boost our enemies," Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told the Free Beacon after reviewing the sanctions waiver. "They have sanctioned Israel and imposed an arms embargo. Meanwhile they've spent hundreds of millions pouring aid into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, dismantled sanctions on Iran, and now are suspending congressional restrictions to send weapons to Israel's enemies such as Qatar and Lebanon."

#7  Wait a minute. Didn't the Democrat House of Representatives, under Nancy Pelosi's leadership, impeach Donald Trump for withholding weapons from Ukraine? I remember Pelosi saying Trump abused his power by delaying the delivery of Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine while asking for Zelensky's help in the investigation of Hunter Biden's dealings with Burisma. She was outraged that he had to audacity to withhold weapons that Congress had authorized. A whole big deal was made of Trump's phone call with Zelensky. All kinds of people got their panties in a wad. Now it seems that Joe Biden is doing the same thing and nobody notices. Am I missing something here?

American Pressure
[IsraelNationalNews] Israel has been constrained for months by the golden shackles of American support — a Hobson’s choice of the provision of US weapons in exchange for an agreement, essentially, that Israel does not use those weapons for the purpose of vanquishing its enemy. The pressure is intense, originates in the White House and State Department, and has enlisted Israeli politicians such as Yair Lapid to do America’s bidding.

That pressure has also coopted Jewish Democrats who have been quick to turn on Israel under the guise of contempt for Israel’s Prime Minister. Perhaps they are unaware that Israel’s Prime Minister serves because he reflects the views of most of the Israeli public and has a majority in the Knesset. Their contempt is thus for the Israeli voting public — or for Israel itself.

Thus, President Biden first directed Israel not to launch a ground invasion of Gaza and recently has threatened Israel with a variety of sanctions if Israel invades Rafiah, conquers Gaza, and defeats Hamas. Massive pressure, to which Netanyahu has a pattern of succumbing in every way except rhetorically, has led to an interminable delay and possibly undermined a chance for victory. The pressure always includes carrots and sticks and sounds so plausible that leaders are often enticed to act against their own country’s interests in deference to this pressure.

This week’s tiptoe incursion into Rafiah will likely lead to Hamas demanding a cease fire, dangling the hostages as bait, hoping to save itself and win the release of thousands of murderers so as to better murder and abduct more Jews in the future. A better negotiating tactic for Israel would be hardball: every hostage released in exchange for a temporary cease fire — and nothing else. We should not exchange innocent citizens wrongly held in violation of international for terrorist murderers rightly held because of their enthusiastic murder of Jews. The alternative for Hamas is their immediate destruction.

We should not play their game nor should we negotiate ourselves into a defeat, regardless of American pressure.

History teaches us that succumbing to American pressure is often unwise and occasionally fatal.

In 1946, Chiang Kai-shek, leader of Nationalist China, began a military campaign to defeat the Communist insurgents, led by Mao Zedong and General Lin Biao. The Communists were situated in mineral-rich Manchuria in the Mainland’s northeast. Within a month, the Communists were routed from southern Manchuria, and prepared to abandon the major city of Harbin, the key to the security of northern Manchuria. They were utterly desperate, but with Chiang’s army poised to enter Harbin, he suddenly stopped. His army never again advanced.

"What explains Chiang’s action? In two words: American pressure" ("What If?" edited by Robert Crowley, pages 379-380). General George C. Marshall, then the US Special Envoy to China having finished his service of Chief of Staff during World War II, coerced Chiang into halting his advance and abandoning this battle. Why? One reason, eerily similar to today, is that Marshall and other American leaders detested Chiang, and did not want him to succeed.

It is more reasonable to suggest that Marshall did not want to provoke a conflict with the Soviet Union which was supplying and supporting the Communists, and Marshall naively suggested that Chiang form a unity government with the Communists. That never happened, but Chiang unhappily agreed to stop his assault, later calling his failure to pursue this invasion the worst mistake he ever made in dealing with the Communists.

Eventually, the Communists regrouped, rearmed, and began a guerilla campaign against Chiang’s forces. Nationalist China suffered a major defeat in 1948 — that year should sound familiar to us — and by 1949 Chiang and his forces were completely driven off the mainland and established their political center in what today is called the island of Taiwan. By heeding Marshall, Chiang forfeited the greatest opportunity he had to defeat Mao and end the Communist insurgency.

By that time, of course, Marshall was gone from office, and even his brief tenure as Secretary of State was over, characterized by a fanatic opposition to an independent Israel which to him also seemed like a reasonable policy. Marshall even threatened to vote against President Truman in the 1948 election — and publicize that he would do so — if Truman recognized Israel. Truman did, Marshall didn’t, and so much for idle threats. Marshall may have had a great Plan, but he was often wrong on global strategy.

The ramifications were profound. Counterfactual history is always tantalizing and other factors could have intervened and produced unforeseeable outcomes. But if the Communists had been driven from China with Mao defeated, there would have been no Korean War; Kim Il Sung was energized by the Communist victory to invade South Korea a year later. There would have been no Vietnam War; absent Communist Chinese support, Ho Chi Minh could never have invaded South Vietnam. Without a Communist China, the Cold War would have had a completely different complexion — and without those wars, American society would not have deteriorated into an angry assortment of warring factions distrustful of their government.

And all because of American pressure that thwarted Chiang’s advance into northern Manchuria and the defeat of the Communists.

Where does that leave Israel today? The Americans (the State Department and even for a time Harry Truman) pressured Israel not to declare statehood. Israel did anyway, and Israel still flourishes. The Americans pressured Israel not to launch a preemptive strike in 1967 on the eve of the Six Day War. Israel did anyway and won a great victory. The Americans pressured Israel to withdraw from Sinai (in 1956 and then again in 1979). Israel did and we are paying the price for that today. The Americans pressured Israel not to destroy the Iraqi nuclear reactor. Israel did anyway and in retrospect spared the world a nuclear nightmare. The Americans are now pressuring Israel to acquiesce in the survival of the terrorist entity that committed atrocities against it, and then agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state that would reduce Israel, now roughly the size of New Jersey, to roughly the size of Delaware, Biden’s home state.

The list of American pressure ignored goes on but the point is clear: the United States generally operates according to the perception of its own interests, and that is how it should be. When American and Israel interests converge, it is good for the world. When they don’t, then Israel, like any self-respecting country, should operate in line with its own interests.

Sure, American supply of armaments is important but Israel has enough of its own weapons to wage a quick and decisive war, especially without the restrictions hypocritically applied only to the conduct of Israel’s wars and to that of no other country. Bear in mind that the Iron Dome, for example, is a technological marvel, but essentially a defensive system that accepts the enemy’s launching rockets and missiles against our civilians. That should be unacceptable — and the appropriate defense should be the eradication of those who are firing the rockets and missiles rather than the projectiles themselves.

We have for too long accepted this ridiculous situation because of our technological prowess. We should tolerate it no longer, which then renders impotent the American threat to stop replenishing the Iron Dome.

Note that Israel has stayed its military might to protect the not-so-innocent civilians of Gaza, presumably to avoid international recriminations. As should have been anticipated, Israel’s invasion was thus blunted, less effective than it could have been — and the international recriminations have come anyway, fast and false, furious and spurious. The battles to come should prioritize the lives of our soldiers.

...America’s foreign policy does change because the personalities in charge of it change. South Vietnam was cajoled by the US into accepting a flawed treaty that left North Vietnam on its territory, the Shah of Iran was abandoned which led to the takeover of Iran by radical Islam that imperils the world today, and the surrender of Afghanistan to the viciousness of the Taliban is still fresh in our minds. All were American allies — until they weren’t. All accommodated American pressure and all paid the ultimate price for it.

...The United States can weather its bad policy choices; it is big country protected by two oceans. It rarely pays any price for its diplomatic follies. That price is paid by its erstwhile allies pressured into acting against their own interests.

After ban, ministry raids Al Jazeera's Nazareth branch, seizes equipment
[IsraelTimes] Inspectors confiscate broadcasting gear from blacklisted network; Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi vows ’Israel won’t let Hamas broadcast from here’

The Communications Ministry said Thursday that its inspectors raided the Nazareth offices of Qatar

i broadcaster Al Jazeera, in accordance with the recent government decision to halt the channel’s operations in the country.

Inspectors accompanied by police confiscated equipment designed for live broadcasts last used on Wednesday, including a camera, a TVU transceiver, a tripod and an audio kit, the ministry said in its statement.

"Israel won’t let Hamas

broadcast from here," Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi posted on X, reiterating Israel’s accusation that the Qatari network serves as a propaganda mouthpiece for the terror group.

On Sunday, the government voted unanimously to authorize Karhi to shut down Al Jazeera for 45 days, in accordance with a law passed by the Knesset in April allowing the temporary closure of foreign media outlets deemed to be harming national security.

Immediately after the cabinet decision, Karhi signed four orders instructing Israel’s television and internet providers to halt access to Al Jazeera, as well as instructions to close the network’s offices in Israel and to confiscate the channel’s broadcast equipment.

"Al Jazeera’s journalists have harmed Israeli security and incited against IDF soldiers," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a joint blurb issued together with Karhi’s office following the government decision.

The temporary law passed in April allows foreign media networks to be shuttered for a 45-day period, which can then be renewed.

The law itself was passed as a temporary law and will expire on July 31 or earlier, if the declaration of an emergency situation is lifted by the government.

The law gives the prime minister and the communications minister the authority to order the temporary closure of foreign networks operating in Israel and confiscate their equipment if it is believed that they are "doing actual harm to state security."

It is the communications minister that is empowered to issue such orders, but only after receiving the approval of the prime minister and the security cabinet, and after a professional position paper has been presented to the prime minister and the communications minister by the security services detailing the "factual foundations" of allegations that the channel is causing damage to Israel’s national security.

Tensions have ratcheted up in standoffs with protesters on campuses across the United States and increasingly in Europe. Some colleges cracked down immediately, while others have tolerated the demonstrations, which have included instances of antisemitism and harassment of Jewish students. Some have begun to lose patience and call in the police over concerns about disruptions to campus life and safety.

In Boston, the US city most identified with higher education, students have set up encampments on at least five campuses, including MIT, Northeastern University and Harvard University.

At MIT, protesters have been asking administrators to end all research contracts with Israel’s Defense Ministry, which they estimate total $11 million since 2015. On Thursday, the school issued an alert just before 2 p.m. saying protesters were blocking the entrance to a campus parking garage and spilling onto a nearby street.

About two hours later, authorities split protesters up and pushed them away from the garage. At least three people were detained. Protesters walked away continuing to chant "Free Paleostine." The crowd dispersed, and the garage was reopened by 5 p.m., the school said.

MIT officials said later Thursday that fewer than 10 people were arrested by MIT police during the incident and the Stata Garage and Vassar Street are now open. Cambridge Police were also on hand to help clear the garage entrance, officials said.

Hannah Didehbani, an MIT student and one of the leaders of the protest, said the decision to block the garage was part of a larger effort to bring attention to what she described as MIT’s complicity with the Israeli military, which has been fighting against Hamas in Gaza since the terror group’s October 7 onslaught that started the war. Didehbani said she had been issued a suspension and an eviction notice by the school but said MIT cannot suspend the larger student movement.

"They’d much rather do those things than cut ties to a state that is currently enacting a genocide," she said.

The anti-Israel campus protests began nearly three weeks ago at Columbia University in New York City. It has since swept college campuses nationwide, with more than 2,500 people arrested.

"The IDF has armaments for the missions it is planning, including missions in Rafah. We have what we need," IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said, responding to a question at a presser.

While some commentators have agreed the military likely has munitions needed for a Rafah offensive, it may be hard-pressed to face Hezbollah if the conflict in the north develops into all-out war and Washington continues to withhold munitions.

Meanwhile,

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his first direct response Thursday to Biden’s warning, said that if Israel "has to stand alone, we will stand alone."

"During the War of Independence 76 years ago, we were few against many," he said. "We had no weapons, there was an arms embargo on Israel, but with the strength of the soul, the bravery and the unity within us — we won."

"Today we are much stronger," Netanyahu continued. "We are determined and we are united to defeat our enemy and those who seek to destroy us... If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than fingernails."

The IDF’s operation in Rafah has so far been limited to the eastern outskirts of the city and the border crossing with Egypt. In the city itself, more than one million Paleostinians are thought to be sheltering. The US offered tepid support for the limited operation to remove Hamas

from the Rafah Crossing area, but warned that its stance could shift if the offensive widened or if the delivery of humanitarian aid was hampered for a sustained period.

The White House on Wednesday confirmed a delay in the transfer of 2,000- and 500-pound bombs over concerns that the IDF could use them in densely populated Rafah, as it has in other parts of Gaza.

"The US has so far provided security assistance to the State of Israel and the IDF in an unprecedented manner during the war," Hagari said.
Unprecedented is exactly the right adjective.
Highlighting the coordination between the militaries, he said IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi speaks regularly with US CENTCOM chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla.

"Even when there are disagreements between us, we resolve them behind closed doors," Hagari stated. "Israel has security interests, but we are also aware of the interests of the US, and that’s how we will continue to act."

In comments aired Thursday night but taped before Biden announced his threat, Netanyahu told an American interviewer that he hoped to smooth out the ruffles in his relationship with Biden which have arisen due to the war.

"We often have our agreements but we’ve also had our disagreements. We’ve been able to overcome them. I hope we can overcome them now, but we will do what we have to do to protect our country," Netanyahu told US media personality Phil McGraw of the "Dr. Phil Primetime" show.

But he added that Israel "has no choice" but to destroy Hamas’s remaining battalions in Rafah, a move he has maintained can only be achieved via an intensive ground campaign.

"Rational-minded people understand that we don’t have a choice," he contended.

On CNN
...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for...
Wednesday night, Biden announced that his administration would stop providing Israel with offensive weapons if it launched a full-on ground invasion into populated parts of Rafah as part of its campaign to topple Hamas.

"I’ve made it clear to Bibi and the war cabinet: They’re not going to get our support if they go [into] these population centers," Biden said, using Netanyahu’s nickname.

The interview marked Biden’s toughest public comments yet on the matter and came shortly on the heels of his decision to put a hold on the transfer of bombs.

In addition to the warning from Washington, Channel 12 news reported Thursday that Israeli security chiefs believe the country must plan for who will govern Gaza after the war before launching an expanded operation in the city. The report was unsourced.

Aside from a document in which he committed to installing "local officials" unaffiliated with terrorism to administer services in the Strip instead of Hamas, Netanyahu has postponed security cabinet discussions regarding the so-called "day after" the war, possibly fearing this could lead to fractures in his mainly right-wing coalition.
There’s also the problem of who on the list will still be alive and functional when Gaza surrenders to the IDF. Impossible to make more than general plans under the circumstances.
Channel 12’s military news hound Nir Dvori said Thursday he had been told by officials that Israel’s position is that it will move forward with the operation in Rafah even without US backing, and that this had been made clear to Washington in recent days.

Biden’s warning was met Thursday with condemnations by numerous Israeli politicians. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir went further than anyone when he wrote on X that "Hamas [loves] Biden," complete with a heart emoji.

Pushing back on the more negative reactions to Washington, war cabinet minister Benny Gantz criticized attacks on the US by government ministers.

"The US stood by Israel in its most difficult hour and the attacks on it by irresponsible ministers are ingratitude intended for domestic purposes and stemming from political considerations," Gantz said in a statement that didn’t mention anyone by name.

Commenting on Biden’s ultimatum, Gantz said he believed vital arm shipments will continue.

"Israel has a moral and security obligation to continue fighting to return our hostages and remove the threat of Hamas from the country’s south, and the US has a moral and strategic obligation to provide Israel with the tools required for this mission," he added.

CAIRO HOSTAGE-TRUCE TALKS BREAK UP
Amid the promises to continue the offensive in Rafah, both Israeli and Hamas delegations left indirect hostage-truce talks in Cairo earlier Thursday, according to media reports. Before departing, Israel’s negotiators put in writing their specific objections to a document issued by Hamas on Monday night that purportedly accepted a deal.

Channel 12 said that CIA director Bill Burns had also departed the region and headed back to the US.

According to an Egyptian source quoted by al-Qahera, efforts by Egyptian, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
i and US mediators "are ongoing to bring the two sides’ points of view closer."
I note that there are still no Israelis involved in the negotiations. How did that work out for y’all in the last round?
However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
Channel 12 reported that the current round of talks, at least, was over. It said that in their talks with Burns Wednesday, Israeli leaders criticized the CIA chief for continuing the Cairo talks in the wake of what they have called Hamas’s unacceptable terms, saying his presence risked creating the incorrect impression that the Hamas document could serve as a basis for progress.

The terms that Hamas said Monday it had accepted differ in numerous key aspects from a proposal that Israel approved and that the US described as "extremely generous," with officials in the terror group claiming the deal would yield an end to the war. Israel, however, has said repeatedly that it will not accept a deal that involves ending the war and that it fully intends to resume its campaign to destroy Hamas once any deal has been carried out.

Among the differences:
That should be among other differences! because after that first one, all the others are comparatively — though not actually — minor...
The Hamas proposal would see the release of 33 Israeli hostages, alive or dead, whereas the Israeli text requires the release of 33 living hostages; the Hamas proposal removes the veto Israel demanded on the release of certain Paleostinian security prisoners, and raises the number of Paleostinian security prisoners to be freed; the Hamas proposal provides for the free movement of Gazooks back to the north of the Strip, without security checks as required by Israel to prevent Hamas button men returning north.

The Hamas proposal also changes the timing of hostage releases within the phases, and some of the specifics on Israeli troop withdrawals. It also demands the release of all Paleostinian security prisoners freed in the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner deal who have since been rearrested.

Significantly, Hamas said on Monday night that it regards itself as having accepted terms for an end to the war, whereas both the Israeli-backed text and the Hamas response refer to restoring "sustainable calm." In an introductory paragraph, the Hamas text says the "framework agreement aims for... a return to sustainable calm in a way that achieves a permanent ceasefire."
It may well become a permanent ceasefire, but it won’t matter to you lot, because Hamas will no longer be present.

Greta Thunberg joins pro-Palestinian protests ahead of Eurovision 2024 semi-final while Israeli contestant moves cheerfully to final round
[GEO.TV] Climate activist Greta "Pippi" Thunberg
...an autistic sixteen year old Swedish expert on climate change, though I guess she's older now...
Born in 2003, she is now fully adult under American law, much too old to be an enfant terrible...
joined thousands of pro-Paleostinian demonstrators in Eurovision 2024 host city Malmo on Thursday to protest Israel's participation in the song contest ahead of this year's second semi-final.

Some 100,000 visitors have gathered in the southern Swedish city for the annual kitsch-fest, which is taking place amid protests and boycotts over the Israeli military campaign in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
"Young people are leading the way and showing the world how we should react to this," Thunberg, 21, said, wrapped in a keffiyeh, the traditional scarf that has become a symbol of Paleostinian resistance.

Defying haters, Israel’s Eden Golan, 20, advances to the Eurovision grand final on Saturday

[IsraelTimes] Israel jumps up in the odds after accidental leaked results appear to show 40% of votes in Italy going to Golan; Belgian broadcaster interrupts show with anti-Israel message.

While a mass anti-Israel protest was held earlier Thursday in the southern Swedish city — as well as a much smaller pro-Israel gathering — Golan’s performance went off undisturbed.

Within the arena, a smattering of boos could be heard as she was on stage, as well as loud cheers, but the European Broadcasting Union employs anti-boo technology to prevent any such noises making it to the live broadcast. The Kan public broadcaster said that Golan practiced singing while being booed in order to prepare for her performance.

In her only comments on stage after completing the song on Thursday night, Golan simply exclaimed "thank you so much!"

The Italian public broadcaster appeared to accidentally reveal live on air the results of its country’s televote, handing Israel a whopping 39% of the votes, way ahead of the second vote-getter, Netherlands, which got just 7%. The vote distribution in the semifinals is not meant to be released until after the final, and the percentages are not generally published. The EBU did not respond to a request for comment.

At a presser for those who advanced to the finals, held shortly after the show, Golan said that she felt "overwhelmed with emotions — it’s truly such an honor to be here on stage, performing and showing our voice and representing us with pride and making it to the finals."

Golan was asked by a Polish journalist, Szymon Stellmaszyk, if she felt that she should not have attended the contest since it would bring "risk and danger" to the other contestants. A visibly taken-aback Golan was told by the host of the presser that she did not need to answer, but she responded that "I think we’re all here for one reason and one reason only. And the EBU is taking all safety precautions to make this a safe and united place for everyone."

The Israeli singer has been accompanied by a heavy security presence throughout the competition, and has skipped almost all events in Malmo aside from the live shows and dress rehearsals, in light of a wide range of threats made against Israel’s participation.
She’s pretty much been in semi-solitary confinement in her room except when travelling to and from the performance space, according to reports.
Ahead of the contest, a major anti-Israel rally was held in the city center, with an estimated 12,000 attendees, according to police. Local Swedish media reported that at least nine people were arrested at the protest, and police used pepper spray to disperse crowds. A much smaller pro-Israel gathering was held while almost entirely surrounded by police.

Alongside Israel, Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
, the Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, Armenia, Georgia, Austria and Norway also qualified for the grand final on Thursday, and 26 total countries will be competing for the title on Saturday evening. That show is also expected to be accompanied by another major anti-Israel protest in the city.

The start of the broadcast of the show in Belgium on Thursday was interrupted by an on-screen anti-Israel message which was endorsed by a trade union within VRT, the country’s Dutch-language public broadcaster. The on-screen message said it "condemns the violations of human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
by the State of Israel" and accused it of "destroying press freedom," while adding the hashtags and #CeaseFireNow #StopGenocideNow."

Earlier in the day on Thursday, former Finnish Eurovision competitor Käärijä filmed a short video dancing with Golan, and then disavowed the clip after it circulated online.

FDIC chair faces calls to resign after reports of rampant sexual harassment at bank regulator
[NYPOST] Martin Gruenberg, the chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, is facing an influx of calls to resign after a blistering, 234-page report released Tuesday revealed widespread sexual harassment and other misconduct plaguing the federal bank regulator.

The damning report, which was released by law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and was prompted by a Wall Street Journal investigation in November, did not find that Gruenberg alone was responsible for the FDIC’s toxic workplace.

However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
"we do recognize that, as a number of FDIC employees put it in talking about Chairman Gruenberg, culture ’starts at the top,’" the report said.

Cleary Gottlieb also documented several instances in which Gruenberg — who’s served as FDIC chair since 2023, but has been a leader at the agency since joining its board in 2005 — lashed out at subordinates, "particularly when being delivered bad news or conveyed views with which he disagrees."

The incidents have created an atmosphere of fear at the firm, where staffers hold back on delivering potentially upsetting news to Gruenberg, CNN

Iraq
Arab settlers renew efforts to seize Kurdish land in Kirkuk
It never seems to end, this Arab war of all against all in unending combinations.
[Rudaw] Arab settlers have recently made renewed attempts to confiscate land belonging to Kurdish farmers in Kirkuk province. A Kurdish official in Baghdad said they are trying to resolve the issue through the federal parliament.

In the Daquq town of Kirkuk province, a number of Arab settlers have recently started digging wells on the land owned by Kurdish farmers, aiming to boost their agricultural activities.

Mam Azad, a Kurdish farmer, told Rudaw on Wednesday that local authorities do not allow Kurdish farmers to cultivate their land while turning a blind eye to Arab settlers who have not only farmed but also dug wells.

"Now they have begun filing lawsuits against us, including me. They want us to abandon the land, or else they will take it back the same way Saddam [Hussein] gave them," Nawzad Hidayat, another Kurdish farmer in the town’s Haftaghar, told Rudaw.

Land belonging to several disputed villages was originally taken away from Kurdish farmers by the Iraqi government in 1975 on grounds that they were prohibited oil zones. Two years later, in 1977, under Decree No. 949 issued from the Baath Supreme Revolutionary Council, they were given to Arabs who resettled in the region.

Arabs from elsewhere in Iraq were brought into the disputed areas of Kirkuk largely between 1970 and 1978. The Arabization of the province has been a historical flashpoint between Baghdad and the Kurds.

After 2003 and the fall of the Baath regime, Iraq began a policy of de-Arabization within the framework of Article 140 of the Constitution, which aims to reverse the demographic changes begun by Saddam Hussein during the Anfal campaign.

Hidayat claimed that the Arab settlers’ plans were endorsed by Kirkruk acting governor Rakan al-Jabouri.

Arab settlers in Kirkuk’s Palkana village also made fresh attempts to confiscate Kurdish land on Wednesday by setting up tents on the farms to pressure the federal government to cater to their demands, primarily the expulsion of Kurds from the village.

The army intervened and ended the activity. Some Kurdish farmers claimed that the Arab settlers ended the sit-in due to internal tensions.

Shakhawan Abdullah, deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament, told news hounds on Wednesday that he recently discussed the issue of Kurdish farmers in Palkana with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
i, adding that the only solution to the issue is the amendment of the current property law and the dissolution of decrees issued by the Baath Supreme Revolutionary Council decades ago.

Abdullah, a Kurd from Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
noted that the Iraqi parliament will meet on Thursday to discuss the amendment to the property rights law.

A Kurdish official said last month that over 92,000 Arabs had been relocated to Kirkuk since 2017, urging Kurdish politicians to work to stop what he labeled as "new Arabization."

"The Arabs that are relocated to Kirkuk are transferring their national identification card and information card to Kirkuk and permanently settling there, and this is dangerous for Kurds," Fahmi Burhan, the head of the Kurdistan Region’s board for disputed territories, told Rudaw.

Fifth Column
BLM Global Network files $33 million lawsuit against group helping fund college protests
[NYPOST] A progressive nonprofit that has been shelling out cash to anti-Israel protest groups is being sued by Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for fraud and withholding more than $33 million in donations, a bombshell lawsuit claims.

Tides Foundation, which has managed hundreds of millions in donations for progressive groups since it was founded in 1976, has "refused to honor its promises and continues to commandeer BLMGNF’s donations," according to the 285-page lawsuit filed in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Superior Court, Los Angeles County, on Monday.

Instead, Tides doled out an undisclosed amount of donations to a radical BLM breakaway group run by anti-police activist Melina Abdullah — who lost a "frivolous" lawsuit against BLMGNF — according to court papers and an attorney for BLMGNF.

Tides, a Los Angeles- and the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
-based nonprofit, acts as a fiscal sponsor — essentially, a clearinghouse that collects donations for groups that may not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

In addition to BLMGNF and other BLM groups, it manages donations for pro-Paleostinian groups that have supported anti-Israel protests across the country.

Billionaire George Soros
...either Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Auric Goldfinger come true...
and his son Alex Soros have funneled nearly $14 million from their Open Society Foundations to Tides, which sponsors activist groups including the pro-Paleostinian Adalah Justice Project and others fueling campus protests.

"Tides has engaged in deceptive business practices and has operated in a quasi-banking capacity without appropriate regulatory oversight of licenses," the BLMGNF lawsuit says. "Tides operates with a level of autonomy and minimal regulatory scrutiny that is starkly at odds with the regulatory framework imposed on traditional financial institutions."

According to the lawsuit, Tides has more than $1.4 billion in assets and allegedly acts as a bank — only without banking regulations.

BLMGNF, the national organization of the civil rights movement founded in 2017, took in tens of millions in donations after the death of Saint George Floyd
...The patron saint of Minneapolis...
in 2020.

At the time, the group did not have tax-exempt status from the IRS
...the Internal Revenue Service; that office of the United States government that collects taxes and persecutes the regime's political enemies...
, and approached the Tides Foundation to help it manage the flood of cash.

Tides, which takes a percentage of donations to manage a group’s funds, gave verbal assurances that it would return the collected money once BLMGNF received tax-exempt status, the lawsuit claims.

In the meantime, it managed donations in a "collective action fund" that would be accessible to BLMGNF, according to the lawsuit.

BLMGNF ended its relationship with Tides in 2022, and Tides has refused to hand over the cash, totaling some $33 million, the complaint says.

Instead, Tides, which takes between 3% and 9% of the donations it processes, has sent part of the funds to other BLM groups without the permission of BLMGNF, the lawsuit says.

On June 9, 2022, a Tides official said Tides had transferred $7.4 million from the collective fund back to BLMGNF.

Instead, it sent part of the cash — $4.75 million — to an unaffiliated BLM chapter in Oklahoma City, the lawsuit says.

"It is unclear why such a large amount would have been granted to a single city’s BLM chapter," the lawsuit says.

In a statement to The Post Wednesday, a spokeswoman for Tides Foundation called the allegations in the complaint "completely false."

"Resources in the Black Lives Matter [collective action fund] were never intended to be granted to large, well-funded national organizations like Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, and were always intended to be granted to local Black Lives Matter chapters," the Tides statement says. "BLMGNF’s lawsuit seeks to circumvent the intent of the Fund’s donors and deprive grassroots Black Lives Matter chapters critical resources, for its own benefit."

While Tides’ website mentions that it offers "grant management," an attorney for BLMGNF said in a statement to The Post that Tides was not authorized to dole out donations earmarked for BLMGNF to offshoot groups or local chapters.

Tides said it had granted $12.6 million from the Support Fund to groups, including BLM Grassroots, a breakaway group helmed by activist Melina Abdullah.

She tried to collect $10 million from BLMGNF in a "frivolous lawsuit" for her breakaway BLM Grassroots. Abdullah — who is running as independent candidate Cornel West’s running mate in the US presidential election — lost the lawsuit last year and was ordered to pay more than $700,000 in BLMGNF legal fees and costs.

An attorney for BLMGNF cited a June ruling by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge who dismissed BLM Grassroots’ claims to any of BLMGNF’s donations.

"This lawsuit against the Tides Foundation is not just about financial discrepancies but the principle of rightful ownership and transparency that should govern partnerships in social justice funding," attorney Byron McLain said Wednesday.

In a statement to The Post, BLMGNF said it "never expected to become victims of... unscrupulous business practices" in social justice philanthropy.

"There is an expectation for Black Lives Matter to challenge systems, break barriers and uphold the truth, no matter how uncomfortable," the statement said. "Today, that extends into non-profit operations as we call out Tides Foundation and other so-called ’fiscal sponsors’ who exploit their role."

BLMGNF has had its own issues with finances, after raking in $90 million in donations for 2020 alone.

Patrisse Cullors, the group’s co-founder, then went on a multimillion-dollar home-buying spree, purchasing two homes in Los Angeles and a property in the Atlanta suburbs with an airplane hangar and runway, as first revealed by The Post.

Cullors denied that she used donations to buy the properties.

She resigned from BLMGNF a month later, in May 2021.

Cullors also signed off on a $6 million Los Angeles mansion, to be used as an office for BLMGNF, and an $8 million property in Toronto for the group’s Canadian chapter.

[REGNUM] Exactly eighty years ago, at noon on May 9, 1944, a Soviet reconnaissance aircraft spotted an enemy sea convoy from the air, heading from the port of Constanta in the direction of Sevastopol. Two Romanian destroyers, King Ferdinand and Marasesti (gifts from Duce Mussolini to Marshal Antonescu ), and two Kriegsmarine minesweepers escorted the two large transport vessels.

#12  A team of researchers at Hebei Medical University used a contagious disease of livestock and added a protein found in Ebola, which allows the virus to infect cells and spread throughout the human body.

I.e. they have done Gain of Function by adding an Ebola protein to a different virus' proteome.

Why would one expect any effective vaccination/antiviral medication to do anything about the original Ebola disease which is caused by the original Ebola virus?

Southeast Asia
Malaysia ‘nicely' but firmly tells US off about sanctions against Iran
Would they have thought to speak so to President Trump? Here we see how the Biden administration makes friends and influences governments around the world.
[BenarNews] In response to American allegations that Malaysian entities are funding terrorism, Kuala Lumpur says it firmly opposes murderous Moslem financing.

Malaysia said Thursday it "nicely" told visiting American officials that it would not kowtow to sanctions the United States or any other country imposes on Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Sturmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Fuhrer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
or elsewhere, for terror financing or other issues.

Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, during a meeting with U.S. Treasury officials in Kuala Lumpur, said his country was firm about combating terror funding. The officials were in town from Washington to discuss the issue of U.S.-sanctioned Iran allegedly using Malaysian entities to finance murderous Moslem groups.

A little more than two months after the Paleostinian murderous Moslem group Hamas

attacked Israel, killing around 1,100 people, the U.S., the Jewish state’s staunch ally, has focused on severing the money flow to groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, which are backed and funded by Iran.

The Treasury officials’ visit to Malaysia and Singapore this week was part of that effort. And Brian Nelson, the visiting U.S. Treasury under secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, told a local news source, Malaysiakini, that there had been an increase in funds flowing to Iran and its so-called proxies — including Hamas — via the Malaysian financial system.

Iran has managed to keep selling its oil by secretive ship-to-ship transfers to disguise the petroleum’s provenance, thanks to countries that either don’t follow U.S. sanctions or look the other way when their waters are used for this activity.

The U.S. says Malaysia is one of those countries being used for oil transfers as well as fundraising for groups such as Hamas, which Kuala Lumpur supports, to Washington’s consternation.

Still, Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin said he had a "good and cordial" meeting on Thursday morning with Nelson and his delegation, when they discussed what Washington calls the "illicit transfers" of Iranian oil off Malaysia.

"What I would like to highlight here first is, I managed to convey nicely to the U.S. delegates when it comes to the issue of sanctions, our position is that we only recognize sanctions imposed by the [United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
] Security Council," Saifuddin said.

"We don’t recognize any sanctions imposed by an individual country. The U.S. delegation respected our stance," he said, when asked by news hounds at an awards function.

Malaysia, a Moslem-majority country, has consistently advocated for a two-state solution as Israel has occupied the Paleostinian territories of Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
and the West Bank. And amid the latest crisis, with Israeli ground and air strikes killing more than 34,000 Paleostinians in Gaza, Malaysia has denounced the Jewish state in no uncertain terms.

Malaysia has taken a stance supporting Iran, which launched drones and fired missiles at Israel on April 13. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described Iran’s actions as a "legitimate act" in response to Israel’s "barbarous" attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.

Saifuddin also said that the U.S. delegation had asked him about Malaysian efforts to combat terror funding.

"We reiterated Malaysia’s commitment [to counter terrorism financing] at the ASEAN and global level," he said. Malaysia is scheduled to chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next year.

"Malaysia is a country that upholds the rule of law, and we have clear legislation to manage the issues raised. ... The U.S. delegations have taken note of this and they know precisely what are the steps taken by the Malaysian government on the issue of terrorism, extremism, and all those," he added.

Still, Saifuddin said the Malaysian Home Ministry understood the U.S. Treasury’s concerns.

In December, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on four Malaysia-based companies it accused of helping Iran’s production of drones. Washington accuses Iran of supplying deadly drones to what it says are terrorist proxies in the Middle East, and to Russia for use in Ukraine.

’ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY RISKS’
Meanwhile,

in an interview with local news site Malaysiakini, Treasury official Nelson said the main method that Iran used to raise money was through the sale of oil to buyers in East Asia, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named news agency reported.

"Many of these shipments traverse the waters around Malaysia and are loaded onto vessels of questionable legitimacy that may also pose major environmental and safety risks," he said according to the report.

He also said the U.S. was trying to prevent Malaysia from becoming an area where Hamas could raise and transfer funds.

Earlier this week, on Monday, the U.S. envoy to Malaysia had said that the Southeast Asian government "understands the potential impact" of allowing the transshipment of U.S-sanctioned oil.

Envoy Edgard Kagan did not elaborate on what "potential impact" meant and it could refer to anything from sanctions on Malaysia to a sharp spike in oil revenue for Iran.

End of story. Zaluzhny - Ambassador to Great Britain
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Alternative headline: Zaluzhny gets kicked upstairs

[Korrespondent] On Thursday, May 9, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appointed ex-commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny as Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK.

Valeriy Zaluzhny has been officially appointed Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK. Before this, he was dismissed from military service due to health reasons. Vladimir Zelensky says that Zaluzhny himself asked for such an appointment. On February 8, the president dismissed Zaluzhny from the post of commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

WHAT TO DO IN LONDON?
British Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Harris has already congratulated the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on his new appointment.

“I sincerely congratulate Valery Zaluzhny on his appointment as Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK. I look forward to us working together to strengthen our unbreakable alliance and move our 100-year partnership forward,” Harris wrote.

Former ambassador to Britain and ex-foreign minister Vadim Prystaiko predicts that when Zaluzhny comes to the UK as ambassador, she will provide even more assistance to Ukraine.

“I think our British friends took a big risk when they announced that this is the biggest package ever (the largest ever aid package for Ukraine from the UK, worth more than $600 million, announced on April 23). Because now they will have to say the biggest package when General Zaluzhny arrives and can share what he knows about how difficult this war is, how much we need help and what kind of help,” Prystaiko said.

The diplomat expressed the opinion that Zaluzhny could not have such a conversation when he was the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but now he will have such an opportunity and will prepare the British military “to understand how to defeat Russia.”

“Our task is to ensure that our new ambassador has the opportunity to be constantly and everywhere. So that he is present everywhere - on all television broadcasts, meetings with the military, students, politicians, anyone. So that he can proudly report that since he arrived, the help has grown even more. Britain already supplies us with approximately three billion pounds sterling a year, which is approximately four billion US dollars. These are serious, serious means,” Prystaiko added.

THE AMBASSADOR HAS BEEN GONE FOR A LONG TIME
In the summer of 2023, speaking to reporters, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said that Ukraine should be more grateful for the assistance provided by its partners. To this, Zelensky rather rudely replied that “we can wake up in the morning and thank the minister personally.”

In an interview with Sky News, the then Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Prystaiko was asked to comment on this scandal. “Unhealthy sarcasm is not needed between friendly countries,” he replied diplomatically.

Kyiv did not like this reaction of the ambassador. Zelensky fired Prystaiko, without much explanation. Since then, for 9 months, there has been no Ukrainian ambassador to our country’s key partner. His duties are performed by Charge d'Affaires of Ukraine in the UK Eduard Fesko, Prystaiko's former deputy.

“No matter how professional the temporary chargés may be, without having an ambassador, you do not have the opportunity to reach the high level of communication that we now need. For example, I knew the royal family, prime ministers, ministers, chief judges. The temporary attorney is limited in these contacts. Having an ambassador is very important for the country,” notes Prystaiko.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba believes that Zaluzhny’s military background will be an advantage in the post of Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK.

According to Kuleba, he had several conversations with Zaluzhny, from which he was convinced that “the soul of our respected general, the former commander-in-chief, is committed to diplomatic work.”

“Moreover, he even has a specialized education - it seems that in 2020 he received a master’s degree in international relations. Therefore, I think this is a very logical step. As a minister, I am certainly interested in a strong post-London experience. all factors and decided that Valery Zaluzhny is the optimal candidate, so this is definitely a strengthening of our system,” Kuleba said.

According to the minister, one of the key requirements for the ambassador to Britain was an understanding of the military context. London is also one of the most important capitals in the world, home to embassies of countries in the Global South.

"They don't send anyone there. London is an extremely important destination for any country and in dealing with these ambassadors working in London, I am convinced that Valery Zaluzhny will be one of the most respected figures, and he will bring a lot of benefit not only from the point of view of bilateral relations with Britain, but also for behind-the-scenes diplomacy with the countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America,” Kuleba emphasized.

Al-Shabaab mourns loss of prominent member in army raid
[Garowe] Somalia-based al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
turbans have mourned one of the senior officers with was killed by the Somali National Army (SNA) during a recent operation in southern parts of the country, in what they termed as a "huge" setback to "our" mission.

The group confirmed the demise of the traditional elder who was killed by government forces in Garasweyne, Bakool region of Southwest state on May 7. The government of Somalia confirmed the death in a separate presser as reported by state media.

Abdullahi Mohammed Yare alias "Malaaq Qori" acted as the traditional elder of one of the local clans and has supported the group with recruitment, collection of zakat, and opening of madrasas, according to reports from the region.

On Thursday, state media published an interview with a government commander who said he led the operation that killed Malaaq Qori. His death was described as a 'major' win in the fight against al-Shabaab murderous Moslems.

Al-Shabaab shadow Governors for Bakool, Sheikh Osman Abu Abdirahman and Galgudud Abdullahi Abu Khalid, were among al-Shabaab Officials who eulogized Malaaq Qori, terming him a 'strong pillar to our mission'.

The al-Shabaab turbans have suffered immense losses in recent weeks, following the activation of military campaigns across the country. For the last two years, at least 3,000 turbans have been killed in the operations across the country.

According to the UN Security Council, al-Shabaab collects close to $120 million annually from extortion, with unnamed foreign sources also contributing to the kitty. Of this amount, at least $24 million goes to the purchase of weapons.

Besides military operations against al-Shabaab, the government is targeting those financing the group. Last year, close to 250 bank accounts associated with the group and 70 mobile money transfer firms were blocked, minimizing the group's sources of revenue.

To further scuttle al-Shabaab, the government has also closed down social media sites and websites propagating the group's agenda. The group's influence has significantly nosedived in different parts of the country.

#1  A March 1991 Lahore meeting of Islamists was called at the behest o f Pakistan's Jamaat-i-Islami leader Qazi Hussain Ahmad. Ahmad had spent much of March on a tour of Pakistan trying to mend fences within his party which had fractured over support for Saudi Arabia in the Gulf War. Anti-American protests began to spread in January 1991, and it was the fear of alienating Washington that caused Foreign Minister Shehryar Khan to state that if Pakistan were to support Saddam Hussein it would alienate the U.S., the Saudis and the world community and consign "Pakistan's fate to that of Muslim Albania." Regardless, the Salafist Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) of Fazlur Rehman Khalil led the charge of Islamist movements determined to reverse Pakistan government support for Washington. It was a time of political uproar. Ever since the JUI has led Pakistan's anti-American bloc, which remains significant to this date.

"At around 3:20 am today, the Israeli enemy launched airstrikes from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a building in the Damascus countryside," Syria’s state-owned SANA news agency said citing a military source, adding that air defenses intercepted the missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britannia-based war monitor, reported that the strikes targeted "a base and cultural center" of the Iran-backed Iraqi militia Harakat al-Nujaba, which comprises the 12th brigade of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi).

The strikes inflicted material damage, and were carried out in the Sayyida Zeinab area in southern Damascus — a stronghold for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated militias.

No negotiation or peace in Sudan before defeating RSF: Al-Burhan
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
ese army commander Abdel Fattah Wednesday firmly rejected any prospects for negotiation, peace, or ceasefire until the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are decisively defeated and eradicated.

In mid-April 2023, fighting erupted in Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict quickly spread to Darfur and Kordofan in western Sudan, as well as al-Jazira and White Nile states in the central region.

During an inspection of army mobile forces on the front lines in the River Nile state, northern Sudan, al-Burhan stated, "There will be no negotiations, no peace, and no ceasefire" until the RSF is crushed and the criminal rebels are eradicated so that the country can live in peace."

Addressing soldiers from Darfur, Sudan’s military leader vowed that the army’s fight against the RSF would continue unabated until all of Sudan was free from "criminal rebels".

"We will not stop fighting until we defeat the criminals who have ravaged the country, seized citizens’ property, committed heinous violations, and raped women in Khartoum, El Geneina, and Al Jazira," he declared.

The army commander expressed his confidence in the imminent victory of the Sudanese Armed Forces and emphasized his solidarity with them.

The cost-cutting plans could include possible layoffs at the media company, which has already eliminated more than 2,000 positions over the past year, according to the report.

The company’s streaming business, which includes Max and Discovery+, could see hundreds of millions of dollars in budget cuts, mostly in marketing and technology, Bloomberg News reported.

Turkish drone strikes leave 23 Shabaab-related civilians dead in Somalia
[Garowe] At least 23 civilians have been killed by suspected Ottoman Turkish drones in Somalia, the Amnesty International has reported, calling for immediate investigations into what it terms as 'crimes against humanity', which meet the threshold of war crimes.

According to the report, the two separate Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s claimed the lives of 23 people, with the first one being executed on 18th March 2024, leaving 14 children dead, 5 women and 4 men. The airstrike also left 17 people injured and all come from the marginalized Gorgaarte clan.

The rights group says the airstrike hit Jaffey farm, about three kilometres west of Bagdad village in the Lower Shabelle region, between 8 pm and 8.30 pm. Victims and other residents told Amnesty International that the dronezaps followed heavy ground fighting that started earlier that day between the gang al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
and Somali security forces close to the villages of Jambaluul and Bagdad.

And now, Amnesty International wants the governments of Somalia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
to immediately investigate the incident, according to Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

"The Somali and Ottoman Turkish governments must investigate these deadly strikes as a war crime, and put an end to reckless attacks on civilians," said Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

"In Somalia, civilians have borne the brunt of suffering in war far too often. These horrific deaths must not be overlooked. The devastated survivors and their families deserve truth, justice and reparations."

Besides interviewing 12 people over the incident, Amnesty International also involved researchers, who reviewed satellite imagery and medical reports, analyzed photos of victims and weapons fragments, and geolocated videos from the scene of the attacks and of Ottoman Turkish drone operations at Mogadishu International Airport.

Investigators confirmed that this particular airstrike was conducted with MAM-L glide bombs, which are dropped from TB-2 drones. Both are manufactured by Turkiye. Attacks that fail to differentiate between military objectives and civilian objects are indiscriminate and may amount to war crimes.

Multiple sources told Amnesty International that al-Shabaab fighters were present in Bagdad during festivities on 18 March. An initial dronezap hit a mosque in the eastern side of Bagdad at around 7.30 pm, destroying the building and damaging nearby houses, the group says.

Following that attack, eyewitnesses said many civilians fled to the Jaffey farm to seek refuge. The first strike on the farm killed and injured several civilians. A second attack, approximately 30 minutes later, killed and injured more civilians who had arrived from the neighbouring villages of Alifow and Gaalgube to rescue survivors following the first strike.

A day later, Somalia’s Ministry of Information reported that security forces had killed over 30 al-Shabaab hard boyz in the villages of Bagdad and Baldooska in coordination with "international partners".

The statement added: "The operation was launched in response to intelligence reports indicating that al-Shabaab fighters were gathering in these areas and planning an assault against the Somali people... 15 al-Shabaab members were killed in an airstrike in Bagdad."

It is unclear whether Ottoman Turkish or Somali forces were in control of the TB-2 drone at the time of the strikes on the Jaffey farm. One source in the Somali government told Amnesty International that members of the National Intelligence and Security Agency fly the TB-2s during combat operations against al-Shabaab.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
in 2022, the UN Panel of Experts for Somalia reported that, according to the Ottoman Turkish government, Turkiye did not transfer the drones to Somalia in violation of the UN arms embargo, but rather operated the drones themselves "in the fight against terrorism".

Also in 2022, Ahmed Malim Fiqi, Somalia’s then Interior Minister who is now Foreign Minister, was reported to have said that while Ottoman Turkish forces operate the drones, Somali commanders provide the targets.

Turkey is a major security and development partner of Somalia and has been training the elite GorGor troops, who have been helping the country effectively tackle al-Shabaab. The government of Somalia has also signed a defence deal with Turkey, which expressly gives Ankara authority to oversee Somalia's waters.

Production fully restored at Khor Mor after attack: Dana Gas

[Rudaw] Dana Gas on Friday announced that production at the Kurdistan Region’s Khor Mor gas field has been fully restored, a week after a deadly dronezap that killed four Yemen

i workers.
In case anyone wondered, now we know.
"Dana Gas (PJSC) announces that production at the Khor Mor facility in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been restored to normal levels following the recent attack," read a statement from the UAE-based company.

"The resumption of operations follows decisive actions by the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government as well as further firm commitments to significantly enhance security and strengthen defences at the Khor Mor site," it added.

A dronezap on the Khor Mor gas field last Friday killed four Yemeni nationals and injured several others who were repairing a condensate storage tank that had been damaged in a previous attack. Located in Sulaimani province, Khor Mor is a key source of fuel for the Kurdistan Region’s power plants.

Two days after the attack, Dana Gas announced that it had temporarily suspended production at the field.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) described the strike as a "terrorist" attack and called on the federal government to take action to stop such assaults.

KRG Electricity Minister Kamal Mohammad Salih on Thursday told news hounds that Baghdad is responsible for providing aerial protection of Khor Mor. "The KRG has not failed to provide ground protection, but when it comes to aerial protection, that is the responsibility of the federal government," Salih said.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the Iraqi oil minister said it is not their responsibility to protect the field. "Khor Mor is under the control of the Kurdistan Regional Government and it is their responsibility to protect it," Hayyan Abdul Ghani told news hounds in Baghdad on Thursday.

The field has come under attack multiple times, largely blamed on Iraqi militias affiliated with Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. taking advantage of the site’s strategic and economic importance for the Kurdistan Region. The attacks have caused major power disruptions and hindered expansion projects at the site.

Production at the field exceeds 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas. Last week’s strike shut down some two-thirds of the Region’s electricity generation. A drone attack in January similarly brought work at the field to a halt.

US, Canada, Netherlands, Finland repatriate 22 ISIS-linked nationals from Rojava
[Rudaw] The United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Finland on Tuesday repatriated a total of 22 nationals, affiliated with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), from northeast Syria (Rojava), with the majority being children.

"Today the United States repatriated 11 U.S. citizens from northeast Syria, including five minors. Additionally, we resettled in the United States the nine-year-old non-U.S. citizen sibling of one of the U.S. citizen minors. This is the largest single repatriation of U.S. citizens from northeast Syria to date," said the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
...71st United States secretary of state and a leading light of the corrupt and inept Biden administration. He previously served as deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017 under the corrupt and inept Obama administration. He advocated for the 2003 invasion of Iraq while serving as the Democratic staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2002 to 2008. He was a foreign policy advisor for the Biden 2008 presidential campaign. During his tenure in the Obama administration, Blinken helped craft B.O.'s policy on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the nuclear program of Iran. We all saw how well each of those worked. After leaving government service, Blinken moved into the private sector, co-founding WestExec Advisors, a lobbying firm...
in a statement on Tuesday.

"As a part of this operation the United States also facilitated the repatriation of six Canadian citizens, four Dutch citizens, and one Finnish citizen, among them eight children," Blinken added.

The Kurdish autonomous administration’s foreign affairs office said in a statement on Tuesday that a delegation from US and some European countries visited Rojava on Monday and were handed 22 ISIS-linked people.

"The Government of Canada has taken extraordinary measures to repatriate 6 Canadian children from northeastern Syria. The focus is now on protecting the children’s privacy and ensuring they receive the support and care needed to begin a new life here in Canada," said Global Affairs Canada in a statement.

It thanked Rojava authorities for their "valuable support throughout this process."

The Finnish foreign ministry said the person it repatriated is an adult man "who was taken to Syria as a child in 2014. He is not suspected of criminal activity in Finland or in Syria."

"The person will pay for his return transport at his own cost in accordance with the Finnish Consular Services Act," it elaborated.

The Netherland’s justice and foreign affairs ministers said in a letter to the speaker of the parliament that the government had repatriated "two women suspected of terrorist crimes... The children of these suspects have also been repatriated to the Netherlands."

They added that the two women were immediately detained and their children were handed over to the Child Protection Council.

"Their transfer to the Netherlands aims to prevent these suspects from escaping accountability," the ministers clarified.

Thousands of people from around the world affiliated with ISIS live in camps in Rojava, the largest of which is the sprawling al-Hol camp that has more than 40,000 residents. Despite repeated calls from Rojava and American officials for governments to repatriate their citizens, only a few have done so.

The United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) late last month commended the Tajikistan government for repatriating 50 of its citizens.

Hundreds of Tajikistanis joined ISIS when it seized control of swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territory in 2014. The bully boy group was territorially defeated in 2019 with the help of the US-led global coalition, but it still poses threat to the security of the region. The Tajikistan government has repatriated a total of 304 of its nationals, according to the Rojava Information Centre.

Iraqis and Syrians make up the majority of the ISIS-linked people held at al-Hol.

The camp has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism. Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji said in March that around 20,000 Iraqis below the age of 18 are still at al-Hol. He described them as "time bombs."

Iraq has repatriated nearly 9,000 of its nationals from the notorious camp so far, according to data collected by Rudaw English.

Pakistan rejects US religious freedom report 'based on faulty assumptions'
[GEO.TV] Pakistain has termed the findings of a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to be based on "faulty assumptions and unsubstantiated allegations", saying it did not reflect the ground realities regarding religious freedom in the country.

"The document was based on faulty assumptions and unsubstantiated allegations and was non-reflective of the ground realities in Pakistain," Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said during the weekly press briefing on Thursday.

The United States’ body for assessing threats to the fundamental right of freedom to practice any religion, in its annual report for 2024, recommended Pakistain as a "country of particular concern for engaging in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom".

The report cited incidents of violence against religious minorities and "forced conversions" in the country last year, such as the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire...
mosque blast that killed at least 100 and the murder of a Sikh citizen in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

"In 2023, religious freedom conditions in Pakistain continued to deteriorate. Religious minorities were targeted for their beliefs, including accusations of blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
, and were subject to mob violence, lynchings, and forced conversions," the report stated.

Besides mentioning attacks and desecration of places of worship, the report also stated the "positive reforms" made by the Pak government such as amendments to blasphemy laws and making Islamic studies a noncompulsory subject for religious minorities.

It also called for imposing targeted sanctions on Pak government agencies and officials responsible for severe violations of religious freedom.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
Baloch said that "Pakistain believes that the USCIRF’s annual exercise of designating countries was unwarranted and futile".

"The futility of USCIRF’s recommendations can be gauged by the fact that since 2020 the US State Department has ignored its recommendation to declare India a ’Country of Particular Concern’.

She said that this exercise would have been more credible if it did not reflect double standards and geo-political considerations and had a bigger focus on the "glaring rise of Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
".

ISIS kills SDF member in eastern Syria: Monitor
[Rudaw] A member of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was killed in an ambush by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) holy warriors in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, a war monitor reported.

"A member of the Syrian Democratic Forces was killed after being ambushed by Islamic State members while riding a cycle of violence ... in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britannia-based war monitor.

The monitor added that the ISIS holy warriors fled after the ambush.

ISIS attacks in Syria, particularly in the vast expanses of its eastern and northern desert where the group is active amid a security vacuum, have been on the rise in recent months, sparking fears of a possible resurgence. While the group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 and 2019 respectively, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions, especially across the vast expanses of the Syrian desert as well as several Iraqi provinces.

The Kurdish-led and US-backed SDF, who control northeast Syria (Rojava), fought the lion’s share of the battle against ISIS and arrested thousands of the terror group’s fighters along with their wives and children when they crushed ISIS territorially and took the group’s last stronghold in Syria in 2019.

In late March, the SDF warned that ISIS still poses a threat to the world and the region as its defeat "requires dismantling its ideological breeding ground,"

"ISIS is still trying to recruit new terrorist elements, attempting to radicalize them into its ranks," said the SDF, calling on the international community to "collaborate effectively" with its forces.

Suspected pirates arrested in Somalia
[Garowe] Police in Jubaland state have arrested four suspected pirates along Somalia’s coastline, following an intensive search mounted in the region, as cases of piracy continue to skyrocket in the Horn of Africa nation, which is struggling with instability.

The pirates, officials said, were planning to attack ships in Somalia waters within Kismayo
...a port city in the southern Lower Juba province of Somalia, at the extreme southern end of the country (always assuming Somalia can be called a country). It is the commercial capital of the autonomous Jubaland region....
, the regional administrative capital of Jubaland state. Jubaland has recently shown signs of stabilization, after military operations executed by multinational operations within the country.

The operation was carried out approximately 70 km south of the coastal town of Kismayo, the interim capital of Jubbaland State. Two suspects managed to escape during the operation, and a search mission has been mounted.

Major Sadiq Mohamud, the commander of Jubaland police, said the region has obtained the list of people suspected to be funding piracy in the country. Those found culpable could be subjected to hangman, or the firing squad in the country.

He added that the arrested men planned to hijack ships and boats carrying goods in Jubbaland areas. The Jubaland state is one of the newest federal states which has also been handling the al-Shabaab

menace, a group that is dominant in the country.

Recently, the Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
Maritime Police Force (PMPF) seized illegal weapons and dismantled a network of suspected pirates operating from the coastal district of Eyl, known as a strategic base for launching attacks on international shipping, officials said.

The pirates have been spending much time along Somalia’s coastline in Puntland and have since managed to hijack many vessels, including the MV Abdullah a Bangladeshi-flagged fat merchantman released by Somali pirates last month following weeks of negotiations and a $5 million ransom payment.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has intensified calls for the stabilization of the country, but cases of piracy have caused concerns among several stakeholders, who are directly involved in helping the country to stabilize. Somalia has been trying to find space for development for the last three decades.

Cornell University President Martha Pollack steps down after year of turmoil, threats to Jewish students
[NY Post]Good. If she’s not going to lead, what are they paying her for?
Cornell University President Martha Pollack is ending her 7-year tenure as the head of the Ivy League school in upstate Ithaca — following months of turmoil including demonstrations and threats to Jewish students.

The 65-year-old insisted that her departure — effective June 30 — is unrelated to the anti-Israel protests and brazen displays of antisemitism, insisting that she considered announcing her retirement in the fall and winter.

“I had to pause because of events on our and/or on other campuses,” Pollack said in her resignation statement released Thursday.

Cornell provost Michael Kotlikoff will serve as interim president beginning July 1.

In the most egregious incident, a Cornell University engineering student was arrested for threatening to kill Jews on campus last October.

Patrick Dai pleaded guilty last month to posting threatening messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion forum.

In another disturbing incident, a controversial Cornell University history professor, Russell Rickford, described Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel as “exhilarating” and “energizing.”

The mishandling of claims of antisemitism triggered the ouster of the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard, and now the head of New York’s other Ivy League school — Minouche Shafik of Columbia University in Manhattan — is on the heat seat over campus rioting.

“Cornell has been a campus in turmoil, seemingly rudderless in the face of growing antisemitism fed by hyper-aggressive anti-Israel activism, including an encampment that remains in the main quad,” said Cornell Law School professor William Jacobson, founder of the right-leaning EqualProtect.org.

“The Board also needs to introduce diversity of viewpoint among the faculty, which has become a monoculture and echo chamber of far left ideology, with almost no dissenting voices left,” he said.
And now for the platitudes:
Pollack said Cornell — like the rest of society — over the past few years had to confront the COVID-19 pandemic, George Floyd protests and a “terrorist attack and subsequent war that has reverberated across our country and especially across higher education.”

“The latter has raised a number of critical issues that we are all grappling with, from antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of bigotry, to free expression, academic freedom, and how to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community,” she said in her statement.

“I suspect many of these issues are going to be with us for years to come.”
Thank you, still-President Pollack.

"Bombardment there continued without any kind of let up."

Strip, some 50 button men have been killed by troops, while some 150,000 Paleostinians have evacuated the area so far, according to estimates by the military on Thursday.

Another 10 tunnel shafts have been found in the Rafah operation, launched late Monday, and they were being prepared for demolition.

In one incident Thursday, three soldiers were moderately maimed as a result of a blast in a booby-trapped tunnel shaft in the Rafah area, the military said. The troops were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The IDF currently does not plan to expand the evacuation order to other areas of Rafah, as the ongoing operation remains relatively limited in scope amid hostage negotiations with Hamas

The IDF also launched a new pinpoint raid in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood early Thursday. The operation was being carried out by the 99th Division and aims at "the continued dismantling of terror infrastructure and eliminating Death Eaters in the area," the military said.

Troops of the Nahal, Yiftah, and Carmeli brigades entered the suburb to clear it of Hamas infrastructure.

Prior to their entry, the Israeli Air Force struck some 25 sites in the area, including buildings used by terror groups, attack tunnels, observation posts, sniper positions and other infrastructure, the IDF said.

The military first operated in Zeitoun at the start of Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza last year, weeks after Hamas’s brutal October 7 attacks sparked the war, and launched another two-week-long raid in the neighborhood in late February.

The latest raid came after the IDF identified Hamas regrouping in the area.

Meanwhile,

the IDF and Shin Bet security agency announced on Wednesday that the commander of Hamas’s naval forces in Gaza City, Ahmed Ali, was killed in a recent Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
According to the military, Ali was involved in managing various projects for Hamas’s naval forces and advancing attacks against Israel and troops amid the ongoing war, most recently in central Gaza’s Netzarim Corridor.

In southern Gaza, the IDF said that Israel had reopened the Kerem Shalom Crossing after days of closure, with COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry body responsible for civilian affairs in the Paleostinian territories, sharing a video on social media on Thursday showing trucks filled with humanitarian aid crossing into the Strip.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
claimed no humanitarian aid had arrived in Gaza by Thursday and that there was no one to receive the trucks on the other side of the crossing, after workers fled on Tuesday when the IDF took over the Paleostinian side of the Rafah Crossing with Egypt.

That IDF operation early Tuesday led to the closure of the Rafah Crossing — one of the main paths for aid into Gaza. The nearby Kerem Shalom Crossing was shuttered after a Hamas rocket attack from Rafah on Sunday killed four IDF soldiers and maimed 10 others stationed nearby. Another IDF soldier was lightly maimed in a rocket barrage fired by Hamas from Rafah at Kerem Shalom on Wednesday.

With the seizure of the Rafah Crossing, Israel now controls all of Gaza’s crossings for the first time since it withdrew troops and settlers from the territory nearly two decades ago. The crossing has been a vital conduit for entry of food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies for Gaza’s population of 2.3 million since the start of the war and is the only place where people can enter and exit, while Kerem Shalom is Gaza’s main cargo terminal.

"The Hamas terrorist organization continues to deliberately endanger Gazook civilians and carry out attacks from within civilian areas to attempt to attack Israeli civilians and IDF troops," the IDF said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Moreover, the terrorist organization continues to carry out launches from populated zones in the area of Rafah toward the Kerem Shalom Crossing to attack IDF troops, as well as [harm] the functioning of the crossing," the military added.

The Tuesday operation did not appear to be the start of the full-scale invasion of Rafah that Israel has repeatedly said is necessary to destroy Hamas’s military and governance capabilities and free 128 hostages kidnapped on October 7 believed to remain in Gaza.

Aid officials warn that the prolonged closure of the two crossings could cause the collapse of aid operations, worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the UN says a "full-blown famine" is already underway in the north.

The UN World Food Program deputy executive director, Carl Skau, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the agency had lost access to its Gaza food warehouse in Rafah, which he said was "communicated as a no-go zone."

The US in recent days completed construction of a new off-shore aid pier that will be used to shuttle large amounts of aid into Gaza.

A vessel carrying aid to the pier set sail from the Cypriot port of Larnaca on Thursday morning, marine tracking websites showed.

American officials have said the United States-flagged Sagamore will be used to offload supplies onto a floating pier built to expedite aid into the enclave.

On the Israeli side of the border, activists from a right-wing organization that opposes aid to Gaza while hostages are still held there said on Thursday morning that they had continued their attempts to block trucks on their way to Gaza overnight and in the early morning hours. The group, which has drawn international anger, said that some 500 people, including relatives of hostages, blocked trucks near Eilat and delayed them for a few hours overnight Wednesday. On Thursday morning, activists from the group blocked trucks near Mitzpe Ramon.

"We’re shifting gear. We want the hostages home. No aid passes until the last hostage returns," the group said in a statement.

Israeli authorities — facing intense international pressure to facilitate aid — have been dispersing the crowds and ensuring that the shipments eventually reach their destination.

The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas’s October 7 attacks, which saw some 3,000 Death Eaters burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.

The ensuing war has killed over 34,800 Paleostinians, according to Gaza health officials, though data issued by the Hamas-run authorities cannot be independently verified, and is believed to include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence of terror groups’ own rocket misfires.

The IDF says it has killed over 13,000 operatives in Gaza, in addition to some 1,000 Death Eaters inside Israel on October 7, while 267 soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border.

The IDF says it has wrapped up a two-week-long raid in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, during which troops of the 401st Armored Brigade and additional forces of the 162nd Division destroyed Hamas and Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
sites and killed more than 100 operatives.

Some 35 sites were located and destroyed during the operation, including weapon depots and manufacturing sites, tunnel infrastructure, rocket launching sites with hundreds of launchers, and a site belonging to the commander of the Gaza City Brigade, Izz ad-Din Haddad, according to the IDF.

Using drones, the IDF says the 401st Brigade identified and captured dozens of Hamas operatives, who, following interrogations, provided intelligence information. Some of the Hamas button men were hiding among the civilian population in Zeitoun, according to the IDF.

The brigade killed at least 113 Hamas operatives in Zeitoun over the past two weeks, the IDF says, those that troops were able to identify with the naked eye or using drones. The Hamas button men are operating in Zeitoun without a "military framework," and in relatively small cells, according to the IDF, after the military says it dismantled the terror group’s battalions in the area in the early stages of the ground offensive.

Troops came under gunfire, RPG fire and bombs amid the operations, with at least four soldiers being killed and several more maimed. According to the IDF, most of the attacks on troops in Zeitoun occurred during the day, rather than at night.

In one incident, the IDF says a Hamas cell fired anti-tank missiles from a close range at troops. An Israeli Air Force drone spotted and struck the cell, killing several of the operatives, while others were spotted fleeing in an ambulance, the IDF says.

In another incident, the brigade called in an airstrike against a building from which a Hamas sniper was shooting at troops.

The raid in Zeitoun was the 401st Brigade’s fourth operation in Gaza, previously battling Hamas in Beit Lahiya, then in the Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods of Gaza City, before a raid in the Rimal and Shati neighborhoods. The IDF will soon decide where to send the brigade for its next mission.

With tears in his eyes. Mariupol mourns the victims of the May 9, 2014 massacre

[REGNUM] More recently, our country recalled the tragic events in Odessa, when on May 2, 2014, supporters of the Kyiv regime brutally dealt with opponents of Euromaidan there. But in those days, society was horrified not only by the fire in the House of Trade Unions - a week after the Odessa Khatyn, the Kiev regime committed a bloody massacre against the residents of Mariupol. On the great holiday, Victory Day over Nazi Germany, 10 years ago, ideological followers of the Nazis shot peaceful Mariupol residents and law enforcement officers who refused to carry out criminal orders. Today, liberated Mariupol is recovering from the nightmare of the occupation regime of the Ukrainian Nazis and mourning those whose lives were taken by the brutal massacre.

Court deprives Kolomoisky of the opportunity to post bail to leave the pre-trial detention center
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] A Kiev court deprived the Ukrainian oligarch Igor Kolomoisky (an individual included in the list of terrorists and extremists in the Russian Federation) of the opportunity to post bail to leave the pre-trial detention center, the Ukrainian publication “Strana.ua” reported on May 9..

Thus, the court ordered his uncontested arrest until July 7 as part of a criminal case on organizing a contract killing.

Previously, in the case of embezzlement of funds from Privatbank, he was sentenced to arrest with the alternative of posting a bail of 2 billion hryvnia (more than $50 million). In a new criminal case of ordering a murder, he was placed in custody, but without the right of bail.

As Regnum reported, a day earlier the Telegram channel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that Kolomoisky could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

The SBU noted that a “well-known Ukrainian businessman,” already under arrest on suspicion of committing other crimes, was involved in organizing the contract killing of the director of a law firm in 2003. The lawyer refused to participate in the transaction with the assets of the metallurgical plant, and the defendant, who demanded to annul the decision of the general meeting of shareholders of the enterprise, decided to take revenge on him. The businessman instructed one of the criminal groups to deal with the lawyer.

Gang members attacked the lawyer as he was leaving a store in Feodosia, beat him with a metal rod and stabbed him several times. The lawyer survived - the doctors managed to help him in time. Four attackers were detained and sentenced to imprisonment.

Earlier, the Ukrainian police emphasized that “irrefutable evidence has now emerged confirming the identity of the customer” in the murder of the lawyer.

Kolomoisky was detained on September 2, 2023 and charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: fraud, as well as legalization and laundering of property obtained by criminal means. The second charge was followed by a third - of gaining access to funds and taking possession of someone else's property through abuse of official position.

Southwest State Forces Kill 2 Shaboobniks, Capture 12
[ShabelleMedia] In a series of successful operations against the al-Shabaab

terrorist group, the Southwest state forces of Somalia have achieved notable victories, capturing 12 al-Shabaab members and eliminating key figures within the organization.

These operations mark a significant step forward in the ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in Somalia. According to Somali state media, a government operation conducted in Somalia’s Bay region on May 5, 2024, resulted in the elimination of two al-Shabaab fighters, identified as Abdullahi Aliyow and Najib Abdisalan.

These individuals were responsible for tax collection for the group, a critical source of funding for their activities. This operation demonstrates the government’s commitment to dismantling the financial infrastructure of al-Shabaab, a crucial aspect of weakening the group’s operational capabilities.

In a separate operation carried out in villages located outside the Baydhabo town, the Southwest state’s spy agency unveiled several al-Shabaab operatives. These individuals were part of a larger network involved in terrorist activities, including planned liquidations, direct assaults, nighttime bombings, and extortion.

Twelve individuals were detained in this operation, highlighting the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations in combating terrorism.

These successes come amid ongoing efforts by the Somali government and its international partners to combat al-Shabaab. The Somali National Army, African Union

Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops, and local militia have been working together to push back against the krazed killer group. These efforts have resulted in the recapture of key strategic towns and the elimination of a significant number of al-Shabaab fighters.

The second phase of operations against al-Shabaab, which kicked off in southwest and Jubaland states, has seen the participation of soldiers from neighboring Kenya, Djibouti, and Æthiopia, in addition to Somali forces.
Garowe adds:
Somalia's spy agency; the National Intelligence Security Agency (NISA) has paraded 12 suspected Al-Shabaab militants as the fight against the group garnered momentum across the Horn of Africa nation, which is battling with instability.

The suspected militants were rounded by security forces in Baidoa, the regional administrative capital of Southwest state, following intensive search mounted by local troops. Southwest is a major terror hotbed in Somalia.

According to NISA, the 12 individuals were arrested following a coordinated crackdown by national security forces in Baidoa city and its surroundings were extorting money from members of the public in the region.

The suspects, NISA added, will be charged in the military court in line with traditions set by security operatives in Somalia. Besides extortion, they are accused of killing members of the public along with endangering the lives of security teams.

Security and intelligence officers from the southern state of Somalia are continuing with operations in the region to ensure security is maintained. The second phase of operations against Al-Shabaab is set to be launched in Southwest and Jubaland states.

For the last two years, security teams have intensified operations against Al-Shabaab in central regions, killing at least 3,000 Al-Shabaab militants. In the process, hundreds of Al-Shabaab militants have also surrendered to security teams.

The second phase of operations was delayed due to logistical challenges but the government announced possible resumption in the coming months. The Somali National Army is expected to assume security responsibilities from foreign troops by the end of this year.

Already, about 5,000 African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) soldiers have left the country. By June this year, 5,000 more are set to leave as the African Union gears towards implementation of the Somali Transition Plan.

Houthis claim attack on Israeli ships in Gulf of Aden
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The armed forces of the Shiite movement Ansar Allah (Houthis) ruling in northern Yemen attacked three Israeli ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The military representative of the Houthis, Yahya Saria, announced this on May 9 on the Yemeni TV channel Al Masirah.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces carried out an operation involving naval forces, unmanned air forces and missile forces, hitting two Israeli vessels in the Gulf of Aden - MSC DEGO and MSC GINA. The attack was carried out with the help of several ballistic missiles and drones, and the hit was accurate,” Saria said.

In addition, according to him, Yemen's missile forces carried out two operations against the MSC Vittoria, first in the Indian Ocean and then in the Arabian Sea.

Yahya Saria added that the Yemeni Armed Forces are monitoring the development of the situation in the Gaza Strip and are increasing the level of their military operations in order to defeat the oppressors of the Palestinian people.

As Regnum reported earlier, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria said that the Ansar Allah movement intends to attack ships associated with Israel or going to its ports everywhere, including in the Mediterranean Sea, if Israel launches an operation in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis also intend, in the event of such a development of the situation, to introduce “comprehensive sanctions” against all ships of companies related to supply and entry into Israeli ports, and will also prevent the passage of all ships of these companies through the area under their control, he added.

On May 7, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the start of a military operation in Rafah.

In addition, the IDF reported taking control of the border crossing on the Gaza Strip border with Egypt. The passage of residents and humanitarian aid through the border checkpoint has been stopped.

On the night of May 6-7, it became known that the head of the Politburo of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, said that he was waiting for Israel to respond to the plan proposed by Egypt and Qatar for a ceasefire, withdrawal of troops and lifting the blockade. This was announced by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian after a conversation with Haniyeh.

At the same time, according to local media, Israel continued to strike Rafah, which is a humanitarian corridor.

Unrepentant killer dad refuses to give up location of 5-year-old Harmony Montgomery's body after he beat her to death
[NYPOST] The New Hampshire dad who brutally beat his 5-year-old daughter Harmony Montgomery to death was given 45 years to life in prison after he dramatically refused to reveal where her body was in exchange for a lighter sentence.

Adam Montgomery, 34, who was found guilty of murdering his Harmony, remained silent and stone-faced at his court hearing Thursday despite a surprise offer from prosecutors to reduce his sentence by as much as 21 years, WMUR reports.

Montgomery stuffed his daughter’s body in a tote bag, then a cooler as he hid her death for months, prosecutors said. He even stashed the little girl in the freezer at the restaurant where he worked — before disposing of it in an unknown location, authorities allege.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati told the judge that if Montgomery could give Harmony’s family closure by revealing where he left the toddler’s body, then the state would no longer ask for a that maximum of 56-years to life, but instead seek 35-to-life.

Judges are not Kings. If repercussions are the norm for the rest of us, why not judges. If their decisions kill people, involuntarily manslaughter is a bad thing, I think most can agree.

Biden claims inflation was 9% when he came into office — when it actually was 1.4%
[NYPOST] President Biden claimed Wednesday that voters were wrong to blame him for high inflation because it "was 9% when I came to office" — when in fact it actually was just 1.4%.
Can he remember that far back… about anything?
"No president has had the run we’ve had in terms of creating jobs and bringing down inflation, It was 9% when I came to office — 9%," Biden told CNN
...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for...
’s Erin Burnett in a rare interview.

The 81-year-old president defended his economic policies after Burnett pressed him on the fact that "voters by a wide margin trust [former President Donald] Trump more on the economy."

Biden insisted ahead of his November rematch against Trump that he already "turned around" the economy, despite persistently high inflation and interest rates.

Inflation crept up shortly after Biden took office before surging to rates unseen since the early 1980s, peaking at an annual rate of 9.1% in June 2022 — 17 months after he took office.

Inflation has remained stubbornly high at an annual rate of 3.5% as of March.

Peskov sys that Russia will continue to defend the truth about World War II
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russia will continue to defend the truth about World War II. This was stated by presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

He noted that in Russia the Victory Parade is broadcast live, and this will continue to be the case. Western media did not broadcast from Red Square, but only covered this event as news.

“Of course, we are trying to convey the truth about World War II and defend this truth. We must continue to do this,” Izvestia quotes Peskov as saying

The Kremlin representative added that none of the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition invited Russian representatives to the festive events dedicated to the Second World War.

As Regnum reported, on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the Victory Parade, said that Western countries are trying to distort the truth about the Second World War, as they are accustomed to building their policies, which are essentially colonial, on hypocrisy and lies. According to him, the West justifies Nazism and engages in revanchism as part of its course aimed at inciting new conflicts. There, monuments to fighters against Nazism are dismantled and Nazi collaborators are placed on pedestals.

The head of state also stated that Russia will always remember and will never forget the common struggle against Nazism and the traditions of alliance. Moscow has never downplayed the importance of the second front and allied assistance.

Western countries would like to forget the lessons of World War II, but in Russia they remember exactly which grandiose battles the fate of humanity was decided. They took place near Moscow and Leningrad, Rzhev, Stalingrad, Kursk and Kharkov, near Minsk, Smolensk and Kiev, Putin recalled.

IHC orders transfer of Bushra Bibi from Bani Gala to Adiala jail
[GEO.TV] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) announced on Wednesday ordered the transfer of former prime minister Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who probably had the best of intentions, coupled with mediocre exeution...
’s spouse, Bushra Bibi, from the Bani Gala sub-jail to the Adiala jail.

IHC Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb announced the reserved verdict on the petition filed by Bushra Bibi seeking her transfer to the Adiala jail — where her husband is currently incarcerated.

On May 2, the high court had reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments. The superintendent jail had relayed that they could not accommodate Bushra Bibi as the jail was already overcrowded and due to security issues.

The court also declared that the notification declaring Bushra Bibi's residence Bani Gala as a sub-jail "null and void".

Bushra was placed under house arrest at her residence in Bani Gala on January 31, following her conviction in the infamous Toshakhana case. The authorities had declared the Bani Gala residence a "sub-jail" to confine the former first lady at the request of Adiala jail superintendent.

On February 6, Bushra had challenged the authorities' move to imprison her at Bani Gala to serve a 14-year sentence in the case.

In the petition, Khan's wife maintained that like other political workers of the party, she was ready and willing to serve her sentence in the "Ordinary Jail Premises at Adiala Jail, rather than the declared sub-jail at her residence".

Ethiopians abandoned in Kenyan bush
[Garowe] Authorities in Kenya are holding at least 24 Æthiopians, who were being ferried to the country illegally, but the smugglers would later abandon them in thickets in the Eastern part of the East African nation.

According to the local media, the 24 Æthiopians were left stranded in a bush within Isiolo County and have since been taken to a holding cell awaiting their prosecution. Yearly, hundreds of illegal immigrants colonists cross over to Kenya from Æthiopia.

They are said to have sought help in a local cop shoppe in the Merti area after their suspected smugglers left them on Sunday, the BBC reports. The smugglers were reportedly avoiding roadblocks along the Isiolo-Nairobi Highway, which connects the two countries.

The immigrants colonists told police they were in transit to South Africa after crossing the Kenya-Æthiopia border. The foreigners are in police custody waiting to be arraigned for being in the country illegally. Police said they were pursuing the smugglers.

Kenya is a common transit route for Æthiopian migrants colonists attempting to enter South Africa. Once they arrive in Nairobi, they are kept in concentration camps before being ferried to Tanzania, Mozambique, and later to the Republic of South Africa.

A few years ago, hundreds of dead bodies were discovered in Mozambique in a trailer they were traveling in, with autopsy indicating they died of suffocation. Reports indicated most of those who died were from Æthiopia and were heading to South Africa.

Cases of human trafficking and illegal immigration are common within the Kenyan border, with most of those involved said to be looking for greener pastures. South Africa, one of Africa's giant economies, is one of the most preferred destinations.

Putin: The 810th Separate Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet will be transformed into a division
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

The Russian Pacific Fleet also has a divisional naval infantry component.

[Regnum] Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a conversation with the commanders of units participating in the Northern Military District on the day of the presidential inauguration on May 7, said that the 810th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet (Black Sea Fleet) will be transformed into a division. A video of the meeting was released on May 9 by the Kremlin press service.

According to the commander of the 810th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade, Major General Oleg Vlasov, the brigade included 19 new combat units. At the moment, the number of units is 11,365 people. However, organizational arrangements for brigade management were not affected.

“For the quality of task performance, I ask you to consider the issue of carrying out standard activities in the group for managing a brigade performing combat missions in three groupings of troops and forces,” Vlasov said, addressing the president.

Putin replied that he had talked about this with the acting leader. O. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. According to him, it is necessary to reorganize the brigade into a division, aligning all control bodies.
Shoigu is now "acting defense chief." We are s’posed to learn the name of the new Russian defense ministry head in a few days.
“We’ll do that. I know about your brigade, it is constantly in the news. Thank you for your military work and best wishes to all soldiers and officers,” the president said.

As Regnum reported, in September, Deputy Commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet (BSF), Rear Admiral Ildar Akhmerov, presented state awards to servicemen of the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet for thwarting enemy attacks during a special operation in Ukraine. From the hands of Akhmerov they received the Order of Courage and medals “For Courage”.

Naval infantry of the 810th Brigade took part in battles near the village of Rabotino, Zaporozhye region. According to a serviceman with the call sign Bosun, the enemy suffered significant losses in equipment: 25 to one. He noted that Western-made Leopard tanks “burn well, with high quality, with a spark.”

Earlier, the deputy commander of the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet, Colonel Alexey Bernhard, received the title of Hero of Russia for the fact that his unit successfully broke through the enemy’s defenses and caused him to stampede in the Mariupol direction.

The commander of the 810th Brigade with the call sign Struna, Vladislav Golovin, was also awarded the title of Hero of Russia. He took command of the battalion after the death of the officers, rallied and motivated the soldiers to carry out the tasks set by the high command.

The 810th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade was formed in 1967. In 2016, the 810th Separate Naval Infantry Brigade was awarded the Order of Zhukov for participation in the operation in Syria. In 2018, the President of Russia awarded it the name “Guards” for mass heroism and courage in armed conflicts and for services in peacetime.

TPLF: We are not involved in Sudan conflict
Good to know.
[Garowe] The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has denied claims that it is involved in the Sudanese conflict, which has seen Rapid Support Forces (RSF) engage the Sudanese army in fierce fighting as the two factions push for total control of government.

A statement issued by the Tigray Interim Administration termed the claims as 'baseless', noting that it has never been involved in the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) conflict, which has left thousands of people dead.

The claims, Tigray Interim Administration noted, are "apparently designed to shore up international support for its campaign against the SAF by internationalizing the tragic civil war." "The RSF’s allegation that TPLF fighters were taking part in the Sudanese civil war is based on nothing more than a fecund imagination."

RSF, the paramilitary wing which previously worked closely with the Sudanese army, made sensational claims that it has 'credible' evidence linking TPLF with close partnerships with SAF, which is struggling to contain the group.

The RSF leveled accusations against the Sudanese army, contending that since the outset of the civil conflict in Sudan, the SAF has actively solicited support from foreign mercenaries and entities across various nations, Addis Standard reports.

According to the RSF, these external entities have provided extensive support to the SAF, encompassing diverse operational domains such as air force operations, engineering tasks, artillery maneuvers, the deployment of military drones, and engagement in information warfare.

"Our advanced surveillance systems have documented the deaths of numerous mercenaries killed in combat and tracked their remains as they were repatriated through Port Sudan Airport last November and December."

The civil war erupted in Sudan on 15 April 2023, pitting two factions of the military government against each other: the SAF and the RSF. Allegations of foreign involvement in exacerbating the conflict have been rampant on both sides.

In November 2023, the Sudanese army, led by General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supporting the RSF and facilitating the transfer of supplies through countries including Uganda.

Sudan has been in political turmoil since the ouster of Omar al-Bashir
...Former President-for-Life of Sudan He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself head cheese. He fell out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Hee was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it...
, with the military always tussling for leadership with civilians. And the RSF entered the twist, pushing for integration into the Sudan Armed Forces.

"Despite confronting internal adversities, the Sudanese populace and government have diligently extended aid and protection to the distressed refugees," reads the statement.

Given these circumstances, the Addis Standard adds, the interim administration, led by Getachew Reda, emphasized that "Tigray does not incline to intervene in the ongoing civil strife, recognizing Sudan as a cherished sanctuary for Tigrayans."

‘Alarming lack of transparency:' Amnesty slams latest Iraq prisoner executions
[Rudaw] Amnesty International on Tuesday slammed Iraqi authorities for an "alarming lack of transparency" over the execution of 11 prisoners on the same day for "terrorism" charges, condemning the trials for lacking due process and falling short of international standards.
AI doesn’t like executions — they’re so judgmental and final, donchaknow, and thus unfair to terrorists and evildoers of all sorts.
Iraqi authorities on Monday executed 11 inmates in southern Dhi Qar province’s Nasiriyah central prison on charges of "terrorism", security sources told AFP news agency. It is the latest round of executions after 11 others were executed in the same prison on similar charges last month.

"There is an alarming lack of transparency surrounding these executions both in terms of actual numbers of executions taking place as well as the process of guaranteeing the rights of the men being put to death," Razaw Salihy, Iraq Researcher at Amnesty, told Rudaw English.

The men in Nasiriya central prison, known as al-Hout, were hanged for their alleged affiliation to with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS). At least 150 inmates in the facility are facing execution on terrorism-related charges, pending ratification from Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid.

"Iraq’s justice system has been plagued by human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
violations. Courts have condemned thousands to death in unfair trials, based on torture tainted evidence and on vaguely worded laws," Salihy said, worrying that the execution rate is set to rise "given the enormous number on death row" if the Iraqi president continues the ratifications.

"Amnesty International stresses to the Iraqi authorities that any executions carried out after trials that don't meet international human rights standards may amount to arbitrary deprivation of life," she added.

Since the rise of ISIS in 2014, thousands of people have been detained across Iraq for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, while hundreds have been executed. The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
has criticized Iraq’s trials of ISIS suspects, saying proceedings have not met fair trial standards and raising concerns about allegations of torture.

Amnesty has routinely called on Iraqi authorities to halt all executions and abolish the death penalty
.

Iraq has often been criticized for poor prison conditions and harsh treatment of detainees and suspects.

While access to data on executions in the country is limited, UN experts in January said they were "deeply concerned about the secretive nature of the implementation of the death penalty in Iraq," after 13 men were executed on the same day in late December.

More than 8,000 are purportedly on death row in Iraq, and authorities have been repeatedly criticized for carrying out hasty trials.

Assassinations of tribal leaders stoke fears of renewed clashes in South Kordofan
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Concerns are mounting in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, over the potential for violent mostly peaceful tribal confrontations following the liquidations of two prominent Arab tribal leaders.

On May 1, button men fatally shot tribal leader Hamdan Ali al-Boulad outside his home in the Klimo neighbourhood. The assailants escaped to an unknown location.

Al-Boulad, the emir of the Rawwaqa branch of the Hawazma tribe, was also the head of the South Kordofan Farmers’ Union and a leader of the National Umma Party in the state.

Just days later, on May 7, Suleiman Sanad Suleiman al-Shein, the son of the Emir of the al-Dulmba branch of the Hawazma tribe, was similarly bumped off inside his home in the al-Zindiyah neighbourhood.

A prominent community leader in South Kordofan, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, accused the Military Intelligence of the 14th Infantry Division of orchestrating the attacks to incite tribal warfare in Kadugli. This, he warned, could mirror the violent mostly peaceful festivities of 2020, which resulted in the deaths of dozens from the Nuba and Arab tribes.

"Targeting civil leaders in their homes is intended to provoke their communities into seeking Dire Revenge, potentially leading to a total collapse of security," he told the Sudan

Tribune. He called on local security and police forces to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and disclose the findings of their investigations to uncover the motives behind these targeted liquidations.

The liquidations have triggered widespread anger and warnings about the potential for escalating violence in Kadugli. Tribal Death Eaters have begun to mobilize around the villages surrounding the city, raising fears of further conflict.

In response, Brigadier General Moataz Ahmed Kidero, Director of the South Kordofan State Police, announced at a presser on Wednesday that suspects in al-Boulad’s killing had been arrested. He also vowed to capture those responsible for the liquidation of al-Shein.

Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: May 9, 2024
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Worth noting, korrespondent.net has compiled its Invasion of Ukraine series into separate months, beginning May 9th, 2023. Linked in the title
.
[Korrespondent] 21:10 Germany will buy three HIMARS installations from the United States and transfer them to Ukraine, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said.

21:06 Representatives of the United States and SpaceX have found ways to combat the unauthorized use of Starlink terminals by the Russian military, said John Plumb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the Russian Federation will continue to look for ways to use Starlink and other commercial communication systems. “While this will continue to be a challenge, I think we have thought through it and found good solutions with both Starlink and Ukraine,” he added.

21:01 Zelensky said in an evening video message that he held a meeting today with the leaders of the Defense Forces - Commander-in-Chief Syrsky, Chief of the General Staff Bargilevich, Minister of Defense Umerov. We discussed ways to speed up the supply of weapons from partners and how to act now, using the available forces and means.

Zelensky also said that he had telephone conversations with the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. “We are actively preparing the next stage of rapprochement with the European Union for June - we are awaiting approval of the negotiation framework and the actual start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession,” the head of state noted. In personal conversations, he also invited the presidents of Moldova, the Czech Republic and Ghana, and the Prime Minister of Ireland to the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

20:13 Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk admitted that NATO soldiers are present in Ukraine: “There are few troops there, that is, soldiers. There are few soldiers there. Observers, engineers.” However, he did not specify which countries’ military personnel and in what numbers are present in Ukraine.

20:04 By his decree, Zelensky dismissed Sergei Rudy from the post of head of the State Security Administration. Earlier, the SBU detained State Security Colonel Andrei Guk on charges of preparing the murder of Zelensky, Budanov and Malyuk on instructions from the Russian special services. The media write that Guk was considered close to Rudy.

19:18 The Russians have been shelling the Nikopol district of the Dnepropetrovsk region throughout the day - with artillery, Grad MLRS, and kamikaze drones. In total, more than 20 attacks were recorded, said the head of the OBA, Sergei Lysak. There were two dead in the district center, and a total of eight injured in the district, including two teenagers aged 15 and 16 years. Eight high-rise buildings, 25 private houses, about 30 solar panels, power lines, gas pipelines, a kindergarten, a fire station, a charity building, a bank, and shops were damaged.

19:12 Germany will provide Ukraine with a grant of 45 million euros to restore energy, the Ministry of Energy reported. The funds will be provided by the German Development Bank KfW. In total, thanks to the support of KfW, during the period of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukrenergo attracted more than 177 million euros in loan and grant funds for the restoration and development of the electricity transmission network.

19:05 There is a network of secret weapons production factories in Ukraine, El Mundo writes, citing a source in the Ukrainian arms industry. According to the publication, some of these factories are located underground, some are hidden behind “huge decorations.” The staff is carefully checked to ensure that there are no Russian informants. The publication writes that by building new enterprises, Ukraine wants not only to reduce dependence on Western assistance, but also to become a weapons manufacturer for the West itself.

18:14 Zelensky signed laws on extending martial law in Ukraine, as well as on extending the period for general mobilization by 90 days - until August 11.

17:56 In Kiev, due to a shortage of electricity, evening street lighting is being minimized, said the head of the KGVA Sergei Popko. According to him, all lights will not be turned off completely - the brightness of the lighting fixtures will be reduced, which will allow for overall savings of at least 20%. Popko noted that the city continues to look for other sources of savings, but “we won’t save on household consumers yet.” At the same time, he called on all residents of the capital to save electricity, especially during the most important load hours for the energy system - from 18:00 to 23:00.

17:28 After the occupation of Avdiivka, about 700 people remained in the city, said the head of the city military administration, Vitaly Barabash. At the same time, he added that the attitude of local residents towards Russians has changed significantly. So, if in the first days of the occupation many videos appeared on social networks of how the occupiers came in and how they were hugged, now people are kicking them out of their homes. “There is looting in the city, a coke plant is being stolen. That is, most people realized that this was not what they were expecting,” Barabash noted.

16:49 Zelensky again voiced the main themes of the Peace Summit in Switzerland: “We will be able to take the first steps on the aspect of an exchange of “all for all”, in returning our children home, deported Ukrainians. He explained that Ukraine’s partners had to speak openly about this initiative in order to attract as many countries as possible, but in this way they also “revealed their cards,” and Russia took advantage of this.

Human rights activists reports the kidnapping of a Krasnodar resident from a shelter
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] A resident of Krasnodar, who complained about violence in the family of a native of Chechnya, stopped communicating after her husband and accomplices kidnapped her from the shelter, human rights activists reported.

33-year-old Krasnodar resident Maria Smelaya was in a shelter for women victims of domestic violence. Previously, she appealed to human rights activists with a request to protect her from her husband, who, according to her, systematically beat her, took her to the forest and threatened her with violence when she was pregnant with their son, reports the human rights project “Caucasus Without a Mother”.

“Violence on the part of the husband began soon after their trip to see her husband’s relatives in Grozny and marriage. Brave told human rights activists that he began to drink regularly and “engage in extortion,” says a publication on the project’s telegram channel.

The human rights project “Motherless Caucasus” is positioned as “research and educational”; its participants provide consulting, legal and psychological assistance to victims, as well as help with evacuation and highlight cases of rights violations, according to a self-presentation on the project’s website. “We are a group of like-minded people, and we are researching the practices of illegal removal of children from mothers in the Caucasus, covering and sharing information whenever possible,” it notes.

On May 7, employees of the “Motherless Caucasus” project helped place the victim in a safe place “outside the Krasnodar Territory.” However, on the night of May 9, Maria’s husband “together with his accomplices broke into the apartment where the woman and the child were and took her back to the Krasnodar Territory.”

“Now Maria is not in touch. In a telephone conversation with an employee of the center after the abduction, [Maria’s husband] threatened her with rape, he also allowed human rights activists to briefly hear the abducted woman. Human rights activists were never able to communicate with her,” says the publication posted on Telegram -project channel at 17.33 Moscow time. As of 20.00 Moscow time, there are no more recent publications in the telegram channel.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, the problem of the safety of shelters remains unresolved, especially in the North Caucasus, representatives of non-governmental organizations said in September 2023. The statement was preceded by a decision of the ECHR, which recognized violations of the rights of women who were in the Makhachkala shelter when security forces took from it a native of Chechnya, Khalimat Taramova.

On June 10, 2021, in Dagestan, security forces and their colleagues from Chechnya  came  to a shelter apartment for victims of domestic violence in Makhachkala, detaining journalist Svetlana Anokhina, employees of the Marem project and the mother of a 15-year-old daughter who was hiding from domestic violence. Their goal was to remove from the shelter a resident of Chechnya, Khalimat Taramova, who fled the republic after complaining of domestic violence. Various injuries, some from blows with a blunt object, were recorded on the bodies of Iraida Smirnova, Maysarat Kilyaskhanova and Svetlana Anokhina, who were then in the shelter.

Russian Federation and Belarus begin preparations for exercises to alert tactical nuclear weapons
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The Ministries of Defense and General Staffs of Russia and Belarus have begun joint preparations for exercises to alert non-strategic nuclear weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Russian tactical nuclear weapons are stationed on the territory of Belarus, and Moscow invited Minsk to participate in the exercises, especially since the Belarusian authorities themselves came up with the same initiative, the president said, answering a question from journalists.

“Relevant instructions have been given to the ministries of defense and the General Staffs of our armies. They began joint training,” the head of state noted.

As Regnum reported, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov previously called statements by Western leaders extremely dangerous, including statements by British Foreign Minister David Cameron about the Ukrainian Armed Forces allegedly having the “right” to use British weapons to strike Russian territory, as well as the French President Emmanuel Macron on his readiness to send troops to Ukraine.

The West is provoking an unprecedented round of escalation, which requires a rapid, effective response from Russia, Peskov emphasized. Russia is warning the United States and its Western allies that their escalatory course is forcing Moscow to strengthen nuclear deterrence measures, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in turn.

On May 6, the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, on behalf of Putin, began preparations for exercises with missile formations of the Southern Military District with the involvement of aviation, as well as the forces of the Russian Navy. During the exercises, the military will conduct activities to practice the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons.

The Ministry of Defense noted that the exercises are aimed at maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of units for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond and in order to unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state in response to provocative statements and threats of individual Western officials against Russia.

Belarus will join them at the second (of three) stage of the exercises, Putin noted. The current exercises are part of planned work, the president also said.

Russian Ministry of Defense: Victory Day was celebrated in more than 300 cities and towns of Russia
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Ceremonial events in honor of the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War were held in more than 300 settlements of Russia, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on May 9 in its Telegram channel.

“The ceremonial events took place in more than 300 cities and towns. In total, more than 150,000 people took part in them. From the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation - 90,000 military personnel, from other law enforcement agencies and public organizations - more than 60,000 people,” the message says.

More than 2,500 units of weapons, special and military equipment, including 121 aircraft, were involved in military parades, ceremonial processions, and exhibitions, the Ministry of Defense clarified.

Military parades on May 9 were held in hero cities and cities where the headquarters of military districts, the Baltic, Northern and Pacific fleets, as well as the headquarters of associations, are located.

The press service also informed that ceremonial events in honor of Victory Day were held at military bases in Abkhazia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and South Ossetia.

As Regnum reported, on May 9, the Victory Parade was held on Red Square, in which more than 9,000 people and over 70 pieces of equipment took part. The foot column included regiments, battalions and companies by types and branches of troops, crews from Suvorov, Nakhimov, cadet and music schools. Soldiers of the special military operation also took part in the parade.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a solemn speech at the parade, congratulated Russian citizens on Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War. During his speech, he noted that the fate of Russia and its future depend on every citizen of the Russian Federation. The Russian leader called for emulating the generation of winners in the Great Patriotic War.

The head of state emphasized that all participants in the special operation in Ukraine are heroes, and they are supported by the entire country. He noted that Russian citizens believe in the military personnel of the Russian Armed Forces and worry about them, and spiritual involvement in the destinies and exploits of the soldiers inextricably links the past and present generations of heroes of the Fatherland.

Actions dedicated to Victory Day were held in a number of countries around the world. In particular, residents of Kiev, despite the official cancellation of the holiday, carried flowers to the Eternal Flame. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that “Immortal Regiment” processions and other events dedicated to the holiday were held in a number of countries, including France, Romania, and Ireland.

At the same time, the leaders of a number of foreign countries banned or limited the holding of actions on Victory Day. Thus, the Estonian authorities announced that they will take measures against citizens who will come out on May 9 with St. George ribbons, flags of Russia and the USSR. In Berlin, as in 2023, on May 8 and 9, the use of symbols associated with the Great Patriotic War, the USSR and modern Russia was banned.

EISI expert Kislitsyna: the Victory Parade evoked a feeling of the greatness and power of Russia

A special feature of the Victory Parade was a huge tribute to the participants of the special operation. Daria Kislitsyna, head of the regional programs department of the EISI, member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, told a Regnum correspondent about this on May 9.

She noted that, according to a survey by VTsIOM, more than 60% of Russian citizens consider Victory Day to be the sacred and most important holiday.

“The Victory Parade on Red Square evoked a feeling of pride for the country and a feeling of the unity of the people, the greatness and power of Russia. A special feature of this parade was a huge tribute to the participants of the special operation,” the expert noted.

She recalled the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin that all participants in the special operation are heroes who are supported by all of Russia.

Kislitsyna also noted that at the Victory Parade, the head of state emphasized the continuity of generations of the country’s defenders and the importance of defending the sovereignty of the state. She added that Victory Day is a holiday that emphasizes the inextricable connection and continuity of generations and fills people with a sense of pride and love for their Motherland.

The expert emphasized that traditionally the Victory Parade is attended by leaders of various countries and now this is especially relevant. The West is trying to isolate Russia and abolish its culture, but Russia’s international ties are developing. This year the Victory Parade was attended by leaders of eight countries.

Kislitsyna said that the Russian president has made it clear to the West over the past few years that it will not be possible to isolate the country, since Russia has friends with whom it forms a majority. This is especially relevant against the backdrop of liberation movements and the struggle for independence of African states, the expert emphasized.

At the Parade in honor of the 79th anniversary of the Great Victory, Vladimir Putin noted that Russia has never belittled the importance of the second front and the help of the allies. The country honors the courage of all soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition, members of the Resistance, underground fighters, partisans, the courage of the people of China, who fought for their independence against the aggression of militaristic Japan. Russia will always remember and will never forget the common struggle and inspiring traditions of alliance.

As Regnum reported, the Victory Parade began on Red Square on May 9 at 10:00. On May 9, Vladimir Putin said at the Victory Parade in Moscow that all participants of the North Military District are heroes, they are supported by the whole country.

The head of state noted that Russia is going through a difficult transition period; it is conducting a special military operation. All those on the front line show resilience, sacrifice and dedication, they are worthy of admiration.

The Russian leader assured that, regardless of age, Russians demonstrate the courage and heroism that is in their blood. According to him, proof of this is what is happening on the battlefield as part of the special operation to protect Donbass. Those who considered the Russian Federation a weak link were convinced that this was far from the case, he added.

Vladimir Putin noted that Western elites are trying to incite new conflicts and interethnic enmity in the world, as well as restrain sovereign centers of development. The Russian leader noted that Russia rejects the claims of any state or alliance to exclusivity. Russia will do everything to prevent a global conflict, but at the same time will not allow anyone to threaten it, Putin emphasized.

Participants of a special military operation took part in the Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow for the first time. Officers and soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces (RF Armed Forces), who arrived from the line of combat contact, marched in the ranks. Among the soldiers of the North Military District participating in the parade dedicated to the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, there were participants in the capture of Artyomovsk and Avdeevka, the battles near Kremennaya and on the Vremevsky ledge, as well as repelling the counter-offensive of Ukrainian troops in the Verbovoy - Rabotino area.

#3  Speaking of Victory, I'm beginning to hear that UKR defensive lines are starting to fall.

Am hearing of Russian troop build ups in the north, and north-east. With a potential new front opening, am hearing lots of troop reinforcements and movement along the Starodub-Novozybkov border to the north, and am hearing a new front opened in the north-east with Russian incursions into Kharkiv from terror stricken Belgorod.
