Donald Trump's Foreign Policy Distilled To Just Three Words
...Trump supports the existing international order to the precise extent to which it works to his liking and advantage and not a bit more. NATO is stronger and more robust under Trump than it was under Obama. The UN appears to be working less horribly with Nikki Haley as US Ambassador than under the Samantha Power who spent more time eavesdropping on Americans than she did on advancing American interests.

..."The Trump Doctrine is ’We’re America, Bitch.’ That’s the Trump Doctrine."

Ten Paradoxes Of Our Age
The 21st century is reminding of us of some uncomfortable truths. Abroad, recent controversies over the rise of Chinese mercantilism, the specter of Iranian and North Korean nuclear weapons, tensions in the European Union, the calcified Palestinian question, mass migrations, and the resurgence of Islamic terrorism all offer a number of lessons. At home, just as instructive is the strange juxtaposition between Obama’s suave progressivism and Trump’s coarse conservatism. Here are 10 takeaways from our current controversies.

...The Western world is in turmoil largely because of the widening gap between what the people see as true and the "truth" that their governing classes impose on them for the purported greater moral good. The result is a schizophrenia like that seen before the collapse of the Soviet Empire, in which no one believed that the reality they lived had anything to do with the reality delivered by the media and the state. Trumpism and popular movements in Europe are simply symptoms of another problem‐that what the ruling elite said was true was often a lie.

Goodbye to net neutrality. Hello to an even-bigger AT&T?
[WAPO] Two pivotal developments this week could dramatically expand the power and footprint of major telecom companies, altering how Americans access everything from political news to "Game of Thrones" on the Internet.

Monday marks the official end of the U.S. government’s net neutrality rules, which had required broadband providers such as AT&T, Charter, Comcast and Verizon to treat all Web traffic equally. The repeal is part of a campaign by Ajit Pai, the Republican chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, to deregulate the telecom industry in a bid to boost its investments ‐ particularly in rural areas.

"I think ultimately it’s going to mean better, faster, cheaper Internet access and more competition," Pai said in an interview. Others disagree and will challenge Pai in court, while many states are fighting back with their own laws, further muddling the situation.

How global warming and our friends in Hollywood are changing horror movies
[Polygon] A new genre of horror has begun to emerge over the last decade: eco-horror, stories in which the planet itself is the monster. Prior to the early 2000s, when Nature was the monster in a horror movie, it was either animals run amok, like Jaws or The Birds, or plant-creatures, as in Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Little Shop of Horrors.

Except that the plants in question are actually aliens that just happen to look like plants.

That’s an important distinction, because until recently, we just assumed that if a plant were going to kill us, it must have come from outer space. Our trust in our own planet was so intrinsic, we never even questioned it.

But that’s been changing since 2006, when An Inconvenient Truth was released and raised climate change awareness across the planet. Since then, we’ve seen more and more eco-horror, such as The Happening, The Ruins, The Last of Us, The Girl with All the Gifts, and Annihilation. Each of these movies involves deadly plants that are ... just plants. They’re not aliens come to destroy us; they’re just terrestrial species that have evolved to target humans.

Eco-horror represents the new existential dread we feel about the irreversible damage we’ve done to the planet ‐ and the knowledge that Earth is increasingly less hospitable to us on a basic level. Watch the video above to learn more about the evolution of this new existential dread.

China-Japan-Koreas
USS Pueblo still held hostage by North Korea as Trump, Kim meet
[Wash Times] The USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the Navy, sits in Boston, revered by sailors and history buffs.

The second-oldest ship, the USS Pueblo, floats at a river dock in Pyongyang, still a hostage more than 50 years after North Korea seized it in a January 1968 raid in the frigid waters of the East Sea off the hermit kingdom’s northeastern coast.

Calls from the surviving crew to bring the ship back have amounted to naught. The Colorado legislature, protective of the ship named after one of its cities, also weighs in every year with a resolution calling for the ship’s return.

After one version passed 10 years ago, a state lawmaker received a postcard featuring a photo of a North Korean soldier smashing his rifle butt against the head of a Western-looking man in a blue uniform. The card had a North Korean postmark and a message. In flawless English, the writer urged the politician to "come and take it, you dirty American."

That’s the polite version of what was written, said state Sen. Bob Gardner, a Republican from Colorado Springs and one of the sponsors of the "bring home the Pueblo" resolution this year. Mr. Gardner still marvels at the perfect, idiomatic English written on the unsigned card.

Obama Privately Coaching 2020 Contenders
[National Review] President Obama has met privately with nine Democratic presidential hopefuls in recent months to discuss the state of the party and what strategies they should pursue to best counter president Trump in 2020, Politico reported Monday.

The meetings were arranged secretly, without the knowledge of close advisers, according to Politico. Thus far Obama has counseled former vice president Joe Biden, Democratic senators Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren, former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, and others, though he remains reluctant to publicly endorse any one candidate.

Sanders reportedly requested his meeting with Obama, which was held in March, because he wanted to discuss their respective visions for the future of the party and how it might best balance idealism and pragmatism.

Obama initiated his first meeting with Warren because he wanted to discuss her criticism of the $400,000 speaking fee he received from a Wall Street investment firm after leaving office. The Massachusetts lawmaker, who has made a career of lambasting large financial institutions, had called the payment "troubling" and said it exemplified the influence-peddling "that slithers through Washington."

The last strategy didn't work too well, i.e. the one where the FBI and DOJ were weaponized against Trump to take him down and or impeach him for nothing before he was inaugurated.

Hey, maybe they should have invited that positive, upbeat kind of guy. Robert Di Niro to the secret meeting to vent his spleen. Or McCain.

Britain
UK Brexit minister says parliament vote cannot reverse Brexit
[Reuters] LONDON - Britain’s Brexit minister David Davis said on Tuesday there would be no reversal of the decision to leave the European Union whatever the outcome of divorce talks with the bloc.

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a showdown in parliament with lawmakers later on Tuesday who want a "meaningful vote" on an eventual Brexit deal and to set the government’s "direction" if the house rejects the agreement.

"Whatever we do, we’re not going to reverse that (decision to leave the EU)," David told BBC radio. "A meaningful vote is not the ability to reverse the decision of the referendum."

When asked if May would lead the conservatives into the next UK election, Davis also said "I think so ... actually I hope so"

1 million and not out - VW reaches record engine milestone in SA
[News24] Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) reached a historical milestone on June 11 2018 when it produced its one millionth EA111 engine.

Production of the EA111 engine started back in January 2010 when the first engines for the then new Polo and Polo Vivo were produced for the local market which was followed by producing engines for export markets including China, India, Taiwan, Mexico and Malaysia.

A million and counting

Apart from assembling the engine locally, the grey cast iron cylinder block for the engine as well as the bearing cap for the block is also machined in-house.

#1  A bit like Trump, SA's new multi-millionaire president Cyril Ramaphosa is pushing hard for foreign investment, and he is getting it.

He also works for Coca-Cola Company."

Ramaphosa is from the tiny Venda (not Xhosa or Zulu) tribal district of South Africa, close to the northern border with Zimbabwe. He is a well educated business man and shrewd negotiator.

The South African GDP still remains below 1%, but a new middle-class is emerging.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Sharyl Attkisson knocks one out of the park with devastating FBI analogy
[American Thinker] Sometimes an analogy is the best way to change minds. Commitment to one side in a debate can lock minds into a framework. But take the same principles and apply them to an analogous situation where the locked in prejudices don't apply, and the blinders can fall away.

That is exactly what Ms. Attkisson has done with a column in The Hill. She takes on the ridiculous reasoning applied to justifying the FBI spying on the Trump campaign and applies it to bank robbery. She begins:
Once upon a time, the FBI said some thugs planned to rob a bank in town. Thugs are always looking to rob banks. They try all the time. But at this particular time, the FBI was hyper-focused on potential bank robberies in this particular town.

The best way to prevent the robbery ‐ which is the goal, after all ‐ would be for the FBI to alert all the banks in town. "Be on high alert for suspicious activity," the FBI could tell the banks. "Report anything suspicious to us. We don't want you to get robbed."

Instead, in this fractured fairytale, the FBI followed an oddly less effective, more time-consuming, costlier approach. It focused on just one bank. And, strangely, it picked the bank that was least likely to be robbed because nobody thought it would ever get elected president ‐ excuse me, I mean, because it had almost no cash on hand. (Why would robbers want to rob the bank with no cash?)

Stranger still, this specially-selected bank the FBI wanted to protect above all others happened to be owned by a man who was hated inside and outside the FBI.

So, to protect this bank owned by the guy the FBI hated, the FBI secretly examined a list of bank employees and identified a few it claimed would be likely to help robbers ‐ or, at least, would not stop a robbery. How did it select these targets? By profiling them based on their pasts.

These particular bank employees, the FBI said, were chosen because they worked long ago with customers who might have known bank robbers in the past ‐ maybe not the particular robbers planning a bank robbery this time, but different people who knew people who were thought to have robbed banks in the past ... or, perhaps, people who thought of robbing banks at some point but never got around to it.

It gets even better, making the absurdities of the justifications for the spying obvious. Read the whole thing.

Obama Records Missing At National Archives [VIDEO]
[Victory Girls] It seems that Hillary Clinton’s issues with transparency were rather widespread during the Obama Administration years ‐ and it’s going to affect history, research, and scholarship on that period forever, because the National Archives are missing records that they should have had.

Detailed on Real Clear Politics, it seems that electronic record keeping is just as easy to get rid of as paper copies for the federal government, if you’re determined enough. The digital upgrade to the National Archives was signed into law by President Obama in 2014.
For the first time electronic government records were placed under the 1950 Federal Records Act. The new law also included updates clarifying "the responsibilities of federal government officials when using non-government email systems" and empowering "the National Archives to safeguard original and classified records from unauthorized removal." Additionally, it gives the Archivist of the United States the final authority in determining just what is a government record.

And yet the accumulation of recent congressional testimony has made it clear that the Obama administration itself engaged in the wholesale destruction and "loss" of tens of thousands of government records covered under the act as well as the intentional evasion of the government records recording system by engaging in private email exchanges. So far, former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General Lynch and several EPA officials have been named as offenders. The IRS suffered record "losses" as well. Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy called it "an unauthorized private communications system for official business for the patent purpose of defeating federal record-keeping and disclosure laws."

Clearly, America’s National Archives is facing the first major challenge to its historic role in preserving the records of the United States. What good is the National Archives administering a presidential library, like the planned Obama library in Chicago, if it is missing critical records of interest to scholars? And what’s to prevent evasion of the entire federal records system by subsequent administrations to suit current politics rather than serve scholars for centuries to come?

That planned Obama library in Chicago is actually meant to be more of a shrine, and not one everyone is on board with, incidentally. But back to the issue at hand. Are we really shocked that the Obama Administration would conveniently lose non-backed up electronic records ‐ this supposedly tech-savvy crew?

Italy Turns Away Ship Carrying Over 600 Migrants
[Hot Air] With a new government in place in Italy this month, it didn’t take long for some new policies to come into effect. This is particularly true when it comes to questions about immigration and the ongoing migrant crisis. The new ruling coalition ran on a platform of being Euroskeptics who wanted to set their own immigration and border control policies rather than deferring to the EU. Now, in one of the first tests of that principle, Italy has denied a Doctors Without Borders ship carrying hundreds of Libyan migrants permission to dock at their ports. The usual suspects are up in arms, but the Italians want other countries to start sharing this burden.

The Insufferable Shep Smith pokes at POTUS feud with Trudeau: 'Maybe we need a northern wall'
[The Hill] Fox News host Shepard Smith on Monday poked at President Trump's war of words with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, joking that the U.S. may need "a northern wall."

"The United States and Canada are in a fight, obviously," Smith deadpanned while introducing a segment on his show Monday afternoon.

"President Trump accusing the country's prime minister of making false statements, and the president's trade adviser saying there's 'a special place in hell' for the leader of Canada, our biggest trading partner in all of the world, our best friend from way back in World War II and every time in between. Canada," he continued. "Maybe we need a northern wall."

Trump and a pair of his top advisers slammed Trudeau over the weekend after the Canadian leader said that all members of the Group of Seven industrialized nations reached an agreement at the conclusion of their summit in Quebec on Saturday.

As far as a north wall goes, remember that one planeload of the 9/11 hijackers flew in from Canada. Several years earlier a terrorist tried to smuggle in a truck bomb from Canada. He was captured when an American border guard noticed he was sweating profusely.

#15  Since I was a girl Canadians have been taught in school to define themselves in comparison to those dreadful Americans, just as once upon a time Germans were taught to define themselves in comparison to those dreadful, cosmopolitan Jews. Except without the genocide, of course.

And given the longstanding tradition of coming south illegally from Canada, a northern wall is not a bad idea — we could build it together with the Canadians as a joint project. A older Jewish lady in my writing group once told how her grandparents had emigrated to Canada, then a few years later the entire family drove across to Chicago, where they settled at the turn of the last century. Yes, it was quite illegal, she said, but so what? They eventually became good American citizens, even producing a famous novelist whose name I can never remember. “So what?” was also her attitude to the current illegals coming north from south of the border.

Donald Trump Meets Kim Jong-un in Singapore
[Breitbart] President Donald Trump met North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un at the summit in Singapore on Tuesday.

The two leaders met and shook hands at the island resort Capella Singapore and exchanged a few words with their interpreters before entering the hotel for their one-on-one conversation.

"I feel really great. We’ll have a great discussion," Trump said to the press as the two leaders sat briefly. "This will be tremendously successful. It’s my honor. We will have a terrific relationship."

Kim commented that the pair overcame obstacles to be at the summit.

"It wasn’t easy for us to come here," he said. "There was a past that grabbed our ankles and wrong prejudices and practices that at times covered our eyes and ears. We overcame all that and we are here now."

#6  I hate to be the nay-sayer; I want Trump to succeed. But there's a wild-card here, and that's the behavior of the current South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, a committed leftist who masquerades as a moderate. Since he's been in office he's been making back-door deals to weaken the South and bolster Pudgy. He's committed to a 'reunification' strategy that in the end would impose a Northern style system on the south.

Worse yet, it isn't clear to me that the South is willing to stand up for itself. They clearly have the economy to do so, and everything I've read about the SKOR military is that it is professional, well-trained, and reasonably well equipped, though it needs better anti-missile and anti-air defenses. But my concern is that the South Koreans, as a people, may not be willing to defend itself against aggression, particularly if that aggression is of the usual communist style of agitation, canoodling, assassinations, etc (e.g., what Allende tried to do in Chile). If that is the case, a U.S. climb-down on military exercises, a staged withdrawal, etc., simply opens the door for more pressure from the North.

I'd like to be wrong; I'm not sure I am.

#7  Transcript of the post-meeting news conference with Trump.

I caught it hours ago, but then it disappeared, showing only the WaPo annotated version, which was behind their paywall. This link seems to be open.

Wow, it’s a lot of questions. Go ahead. Sure. Go ahead. NBC.

QUESTION: Mr. Thank you, Mr. President. Two questions for you if you don’t mind. First, the man you met today, Kim Jong-un, as you know, has killed family members, has starved his own people, is responsible for the death of Otto Warmbier. Why are you so comfortable calling him very talented?

TRUMP: Well, he is very talented. Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough, I don’t say it was nice or I don’t say anything about it, he ran it. Very few people at that age, you can take one out of 10,000 probably couldn’t do it.

Otto Warmbier is a very special person and he will be for a long time in my life. His parents are good friends of mine. I think without Otto, this would not have happened. Something happened from that day. It was a terrible thing. It was brutal. But a lot of people started to focus on what was going on, including North Korea.

I really think that Otto is someone who did not die in vain. I told this to his parents. A special young man and I have to say, special parents, special people. Otto did not die in vain. He had a lot to do with us being here today. Okay. Thank you very much.

Libyan forces’ battle for eastern city Derna in final stages: spokesman
[OANN] Forces loyal to Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
said their campaign against an armed coalition of local fighters and Islamists in the eastern city of Derna has reached its final stages after several days of heavy fighting.

Brigades from Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) launched a ground offensive to take Derna last month after encircling the city ‐ the last in eastern Libya to elude their control ‐ for around two years.

The fighting risks undermining U.N.-led efforts to reunify Libya and hold elections after years of turmoil that have provided a safe haven to faceless myrmidons and people smugglers, and crippled Libya’s oil-dependent economy.

Haftar is the dominant figure in eastern Libya, where he is aligned with a government and parliament that reject the internationally recognized government in the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, in the northwest.

The LNA is fighting a coalition known as the Derna Protection Force (DPF), which includes local combatants and Islamist forces with links to groups in western Libya that also oppose Haftar.

The LNA says the DPF includes fighters with connections to al Qaeda, as well as foreign bully boys. The DPF disputes this, saying it is battling to defend Derna from a military takeover as Haftar seeks national power.

On Saturday and Sunday, the LNA said it had advanced in the district of Sheiha after hitting it with multiple air strikes, to the edge of Al Maghar in central Derna, a Mediterranean port.

"What remains outside the control of our forces is considered a small combat zone, less than just 10 km squared," said LNA front man Ahmed al-Mismari. "The operations are in their final stages and the fighting is very heavy."

Zimbabwe parliament drops call for Mugabe to answer questions on diamond mines
[OANN] Zim-bob-we’s parliament on Monday backed down from its demand for former president Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. Dumped in November 2017 when the Missus decided she wanted to be president, and opposed heer might against Crocodile Mnangawa Important safety tip: If your opponent goes by the name Crocodile andf your title is Shopper in Chief let him win....
to answer questions related to diamond mining operations during his time in office.

In what would have been his first public appearance since being ousted in a de facto military coup in November, parliament had wanted to question Mugabe about his pronouncements that the state had been deprived of at least $15 billion in revenue by mining companies operating in the eastern Marange gem fields.

Mugabe had twice failed to appear before the mines committee of parliament and was given a final chance to do so on Monday, but the committee said in a statement it had now recused the 94-year-old former leader after consultations with the Speaker.

The committee did not give any more details.

A parliament official privy to the issue had told Rooters in May that it was unlikely Mugabe would appear before the committee because this was opposed by influential politicians in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ruling ZANU-PF party.

Mugabe said in March 2016 the country was robbed of wealth by diamond companies including joint ventures between Chinese companies and the army, police and intelligence services. He later expelled those firms last year and replaced them with a state-owned diamond company.

Iraq
After ballot box fire, Iraqi cleric Sadr warns of civil war
[OANN] Shi’ite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
urged Iraqis on Monday to unite rather than squabble over a possible rerun of the election his bloc won last month, a message apparently meant to defuse political tension after a ballot box storage depot caught fire.

Certain parties are trying to drag Iraq into civil war, Sadr said, adding that he would not participate in one.

Parliament has mandated a manual recount of the election in which a number of parties alleged fraud. A storage site holding half of Baghdad’s ballot boxes went up in flames on Sunday in what Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi denounced as a "plot to harm the nation and its democracy".

An Iraqi court ordered the arrest of four people accused of setting fire to the storage site, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported. Three of them were coppers and one an employee of the Independent High Elections Commission.

Iraqi authorities said the ballot boxes were saved but the fire has added to fears of violence.

"What Moqtada said about (Iraq) being close to some sort of armed conflict is concerning. The situation is tense and it seems to be on the brink of conflict," said Renad Mansour, research fellow at Chatham House in London.

Sadr, a Shi’ite holy man who once led violent campaigns against the U.S. occupation that ended in 2011, has emerged as a nationalist opponent of powerful Shi’ite Moslem parties allied with neighboring Iran.

"Stop fighting for seats, posts, gains, influence, power, and rulership," he wrote in an article published by his office.

"Is it not time to stand as one for building and reconstruction, instead of burning ballot boxes or repeating elections just for one seat or two?"

Sadr has in the past mobilized tens of thousands of followers to protest government policies he opposed.

The election, which was the first since the defeat of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
turbans who seized a third of Iraq in 2014, raised hopes that Iraqis could put aside sectarian divisions to rebuild.

One of Sadr’s top aides said on Sunday the fire was intended either to force a rerun of the election or to conceal fraud.

El Salvador judge orders arrest of 17, including minister, in Funes probe
[OANN] A judge in El Salvador ordered the arrest of 17 people, including the current Minister of Social Inclusion, on Monday for their suspected involvement in a corruption racket allegedly led by former President Mauricio Funes.

Funes, who has been in exile in Nicaragua since September 2016, is accused of using public funds to pay for trips, home remodeling and hospital bills, among other expenses.

Among those sought for their alleged involvement was Vanda Pignato, Funes’ ex-wife and the current minister of social inclusion, and other former high-ranking officials.

The government of leftist President Salvador Sanchez Ceren, who was Funes’ vice-president and is not suspected of involvement in the racket, lent its support to the ruling.

"As a government, we reject any act of corruption, wherever it may be, and we support all the actions necessary for the defense of public funds. We won’t tolerate anyone who has betrayed the trust of the people of El Salvador," the president’s office said in a statement.

Funes, a 58-year-old former journalist, governed the poor Central American country from 2009 to 2014 and brought the party formed by a former leftist guerrilla group, the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, back to power for the first time following a 1980-1992 civil war.

He says he is a victim of political attacks orchestrated by businessmen and conservatives.

Nawaz Sharif's lawyers quit corruption trial in protest
[Al Jazeera] A group of lawyers defending Pakistain's former prime minister in his corruption trial have quit in protest against a court deadline that they say is too close to national elections.

Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
, who was removed as prime minister in 2017 by the Supreme Court for allegedly concealing overseas assets, faces charges of money laundery, tax evasion and building off-shore assets.

The trial was scheduled to conclude this week, but the Supreme Court extended the deadline to July 10, a fortnight ahead of parliamentary elections in which Sharif's party is a frontrunner.

"We have decided not to pursue the trial because our request for an indefinite extension was rejected," Sharif's chief attorney Khawaja Haris told news hounds on Monday.

The court indicted Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law over charges related to his two previous terms in power in 1990s. The probe into the family was triggered by the Panama papers leak in 2016.

Sharif's previous two terms in power in the 1990s ended prematurely. The first term through a direct military coup and the second through forced resignation.

Philippine troops kill 15 pro-IS militants in air, ground assaults
[DAWN] At least 15 pro-IS snuffies were killed when Philippine troops launched air and ground assaults against a rebel bomb factory on Sunday, a military commander said.

Air strikes and artillery pounded an area in the Liguasan marsh in Maguindanao, where the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF) group had been making improvised bombs, said Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana.

About 60 to 100 BIFF snuffies were in the vicinity when the assaults began before dawn, Sobejana said.

"Fifteen were confirmed killed, 10 were maimed and two others were captured," he said. "We were able to destroy their main IED factory in southern Liguasan, and this is a big loss to them."

The military classifies the BIFF, which it say has 300 to 400 members, as a terrorist organization, along with the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
and Maute groups.

The snuffies in southern Philippines have regrouped and were retraining and recruiting new members for future attacks after occupying the southern city of Marawi for five months last year, the military has said.

"The house was completely destroyed in the blast," Levies officials said, adding that no casualty had been reported as no one was present in the house when the blast occurred.

The blast also partially damaged the house of Mr Rind’s brother located in the same area.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
Mir Hamal Baloch of the BNP-Mengal escaped an armed attack while traveling between Sirkin and Mirabad in Turbat district when gunnies opened fire on his convoy from nearby mountainous. Security guards of Hamal Baloch retaliated and after a heavy exchange of fire the attackers fled away.

How Ethiopia's peace offer caught Eritrea's regime by surprise
[Al Jazeera] On June 5, Æthiopia announced it would fully accept and implement the 2000 Algiers Peace Accord that ended its border war with Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
. It also said it would accept a 2002 ruling by the UN-backed Eritrea-Æthiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC), which awarded several disputed territories, including the town of Badme, to Eritrea. Æthiopia had been ignoring the commission's ruling and refusing to withdraw its troops from these territories for the past 16 years, making the demarcation of the border practically impossible.

Adis Ababa's announcement last week was welcomed as a major step towards permanently calming the deadly tensions between the two warring neighbours.

Four arrested in Iraq over ballot box storage blaze
[Al Jazeera] An Iraqi court has ordered the arrest of four people accused of setting fire to a storage site housing ballot boxes from a May parliamentary election, state media said.

Three of the suspects are coppers and the fourth is an employee of the Independent High Elections Commission, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
said on Monday.

The storage site holding half of Baghdad's ballot boxes went up in flames on Sunday in what Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi denounced as a "plot to harm the nation and its democracy".

Last week, parliament passed a law for a recount of 11 million votes, following allegations of fraud during the May 12 elections.

Iraqi authorities said the ballot boxes were saved but the fire has added to fears of violence.

Chicago Shooting at Kid's Birthday Party Wounds 7
[NEWSMAX] A reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
shooting at a kid's birthday party left seven people maimed, one critically, early Sunday morning, Fox News reported.

It is unclear what sparked the incident, but police reported that the attackers arrived at the scene in west suburban Aurora on bikes and foot and fired multiple rounds before fleeing.

"The only suspect information we were able to gather is that the shots were fired by several males dressed in dark hooded sweatshirts," The Aurora Police department said on Facebook, adding that it appeared as if someone at the party returned fire.

The department noted that party attendees were "largely uncooperative."

President announces new Madagascar government after court order
[Al Jazeera] Hery Rajaonarimampianina,
Possibly the longest name I've ever seen. They've never heard of hyphens?
president of Madagascar, says a new government has been appointed after a court ruling which required a "consensus" administration to resolve a crisis sparked by electoral reform.

The Indian Ocean nation has been rocked by protests initially called against new electoral laws the opposition said were aimed at barring their candidates from taking part in elections scheduled for later this year.

The demonstrations then snowballed into demands for the president to step down.

The protests led to the Constitutional Court ordering Rajaonarimampianina to form a government of national unity with a "consensus prime minister" to avert a full-blown crisis.

On June 4 he appointed non-partisan technocrat Christian Ntsay, 57, as prime minister as part of a deal with a section of the opposition to obey the court ruling.

"The government of [Prime Minister] Christian Ntsay has now been put in place after several rounds of negotiations," Rajaonarimampianina told news hounds on Monday at his official residence.

Ntsay is not a member of any political party and is known as an international expert in labour management and leadership, previously serving as Madagascar's tourism minister between 2002 and 2003.

"Speaking to the prime minister and the ministers, I say: The eyes of the nation and the whole world are on you," added Rajaonarimampianina.

Madagascar is one of the world's poorest countries, despite reserves of nickel, cobalt, gold, uranium and other minerals.

A 2009 coup staged by the capital's mayor led to international condemnation and scared off foreign investors.

India arrests 18 after two men lynched over WhatsApp rumours
[Al Jazeera] Police in the Indian state of Assam have tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
at least 18 people in connection with the lynching of two youths following rumours on social media and WhatsApp that they were child traffickers.

Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das were beaten to death on Saturday by a mob of around 200 people in a remote village of Karbi Anglong district, some 200km east of the state capital, Guwahati.

The duo is the latest victims of rumours circulating on social media, particularly WhatsApp, about the child kidnapping gangs.

"We have taken strict measures against the culprits and arrested 18 individuals. We have also arrested some persons who were involved in spreading rumours on social media," Director General of Assam Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia told Al Jazeera.

The clip of the lynching was widely shared on social media, which showed Das pleading with folded hands: "Don't kill me ... Please don't beat me. I am an Assamese ... Please let me go."

Nath, 30, and Das, 29, had gone to remote Panjuri Kachari village on Saturday for sightseeing in a black four-wheel drive, when they were chased and beaten to death on the suspicion of child kidnapping.

"There was a rumour that some child abductors had entered our village. This was shared via WhatsApp and Facebook. The message also read that one of the abductors had long hair," said a village woman at Panjuri Kachari village who didn't wish to be named.

"The youth were stopped and asked about their whereabouts. But in between some local people came and started thrashing them," the woman said.

Germany to consider 'educational state-funded feminist pornography' to combat sexist stereotypes
Germany is considering making state-funded feminist porn and broadcasting it to the public to combat sexist stereotypes.

The material, which would include 'fat, skinny, young and old people' will be available on the websites of public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, if the idea goes ahead.

The proposal was voted on by Angela Merkel's social-democratic coalition partners at a general assembly in Berlin.

The delegates accepted a proposal from their youth wing to adopt the idea of government-funded feminist pornography for educational purposes as part of their party programme.

The SPD, the junior coalition partner of Angela Merkel's Christian-Democratic Union (CDU), is the biggest party in Berlin where it governs together with coalition partners the Greens and the far-left Die Linke.

In the proposal, the SPD wrote: 'Mainstream porn generally shows sexist and racial stereotypes in which consent is not a theme and certain "optimal" body types are made as standard.'
They want porn with fat, old, and ugly people. The purpose of porn is to titillate the sexual urge. The sexual urge is the urge to procreate with the fittest specimens. It's like they don't know this, or know it and are lying.
'In these films, sex seems more like a performance or competitive sport: everything seems to work right away, there is no communication between the performers, no trying out, failure and trying out new things.'

According to the SPD, it influences modern society in a negative way as youths have 'unrealistic imaginations of sexual life'.

Socialist youth member Heike Hoffmann, 20, is one of the SPD members behind the proposal.
A socialist, what a surprise.
The idea might have been inspired by Sweden, where in 2009 the state film institute spent £44,813 financing Dirty Diaries, a series of short porn films produced by female film artists.
Sweden, what a surprise.
The SPD also proposes that German broadcasters ARD and ZDF buy some of those movies and offer them on their online media libraries.

US extradites Panama ex-president Ricardo Martinelli
[Al Jazeera] Panama's former President Ricardo Martinelli has been extradited to his homeland from the United States, where he has been held on charges of political espionage and corruption, one of his lawyers said.

Martinelli, who was president from 2009-2014, was transferred from the federal prison in Miami to the Opa Locka Executive Airport, where he was placed on a charter flight to Panama City at around 10:20 GMT.

A handcuffed Martinelli, escorted by US officers, greeted news hounds gathered at the airport.

"I'm ready to watch the World Cup!" he said, giving a thumbs-up. Panama qualified for the tournament, which begins on Thursday.

Martinelli was taken into custody near his home in the US state of Florida in June 2017 after Panama requested his extradition on charges that he used public money to spy on more than 150 political rivals during his 2009-2014 term.

Polio makes comeback in Venezuela after decades
[MEDICALXPRESS] Polio has been reported in Venezuela, a crisis-wracked country where the disease had been eradicated decades ago, the Pan-American Health Organization reports.

The organization said the child had no history of vaccination and lives in an under-immunized extremely impoverished Delta Amacuro state.

Polio, or polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
myelitis, is a crippling childhood disease caused by the poliovirus, and preventable through immunization.

Doctor Jose Felix Oletta, a former Minister of Health, told AFP that the last case of acute poliomyelitis in Venezuela was reported in 1989.

"The virus especially affects people in conditions of malnutrition and unvaccinated, as this case," Oletta added.

Oletta slammed health authorities in President Nicolas Maduro's government for taking more than a month to notify the PAHO that it had identified the virus. International health regulations require it to do so within 24 hours.

Venezuela, devastated by economic and political crises, also accounted for 85 percent of cases of measles reported across Latin America and the Caribbean over the past year, the PAHO said.

One of the detained men had remained a faculty member at a public university in Dera Ismail Khan

forces in Afghanistan, security forces in Pakistain and sectarian violence in the past, the senior officer added.

The three suspects, named Shahsawar, Mujeeb Rehman and Khalid Pervez, were arrested during raids conducted by the CTD in Karachi's Sultanabad and Jubilee areas. The police also seized donation chits from them, said SSP Sheikh.

The men used to collect donations from different parts of the city for their respective outfits during Ramazan, the senior officer claimed.

Detained suspect Mujeeb Rehman, who is allegedly affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. (LJ), was arrested by the CTD in the recent past as well but started working for the sectarian outfit again after being released from jail. Besides collecting donations, he was also responsible for recruiting youngsters.

The second suspect, Khalid Pervez, is an IT expert who worked in a private firm in Karachi and had obtained an MBA degree from a renowned institute. He was affiliated with the hard boy Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Meanwhile,

Shahsawar was a faculty member at a government varsity in Dera Ismail Khan, the officer claimed. He was allegedly an "important" member of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban

Pakistain (TTP).

The suspect along with his accomplices had targeted NATO forces, causing "significant losses" to their troops in Afghanistan, Sheikh claimed. Several of Shahsawar's accomplices were killed in Afghanistan.

He had also remained a member of the ’shura’ (consultation body) of TTP, the CTD officer disclosed.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four people were killed or maimed in an kaboom in a residential house in the vicinity of the 4th police district of Kabul city.

The incident took place before noon time close to Zorabad area of the city with the security sources saying at least three people were killed.

The sources further added that the blast has also at least two people maimed.

Kabul police front man Hashmat Stanikzai confirmed the incident and said at least one person was killed and three others who had sustained injuries have been detained by the police on suspicion of preparing explosives for the attacks.

This comes as at least five people were maimed in a magnetic bomb kaboom in the 5th police district of the city on Sunday.

The security officials said Sunday that a magnetic bomb planted in a police vehicle exploded in the Company area of the city, leaving at least five people maimed.

Europe
WTF of the day from the New Yorker: Germany considers itself in a father-son relationship with America?
Last year, the German Foreign Office embarked on what two sources described to me as its first-ever effort to produce an America strategy aimed at answering that question, with the goal of producing a strategy document similar to those it has for adversaries. "Essentially, it’s an overhaul of German foreign policy," a senior German official told me, "since the key assumption being called into question is the total reliance we have on the friendship with the U.S." Work on the new strategy began after Trump’s Inauguration but accelerated last spring, after the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, returned from Trump’s initial foray into international summitry rattled by him and announced that "Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands." The painful realization, the senior German official said, was that "we might get to a situation where we see Americans not only as friends and partners but also as competitors and adversaries. We don’t want to do that. That is how we treat other great powers around the globe, like Russia and China."
You already treat us as competitors and adversaries. Why else do you rip us off on trade? Why else do you freeride on American security guarantees and laugh all the way to the bank?
Constanze Stelzenmuller, the German debater on the panel, compared Trump’s foreign policy to Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel "The Handmaid’s Tale" and said the Europeans were the handmaids. As for Trump, she said, the American President seemed to be treating his allies like a girlfriend he could abuse, slapping her around as if that would make her more likely to accept his marriage proposal.
We don't want a marriage, you assholes. We want a divorce. Trump already asked very nicely for you to stop cheating us and to start paying your fair share and you got into a snit, told him off, and outright refused.
Nowhere in Europe has that subconscious been more rocked than in Germany, where its close relationship with the United States has defined the country’s remarkable resurrection after the Second World War. "It took Germany the longest of all partners to come to terms with someone like Trump becoming President," the senior German official told me. "We were very emotional, because our relationship with America is so emotional‐it’s more of a son-father relationship‐and we didn’t recognize our father anymore and realized he might beat us."
This is the one that showed me these people live on another planet. WTF? Father-son relationship? I have literally never heard this before. Germany and the rest of Europe looks down on America and Americans. Now suddenly we are the parent figure? WTF?

Inasmuch as that metaphor can be addressed, Dad is kicking his adult loser son out of the basement and the son is crying and suing Dad in court.

A recent poll found that only fourteen per cent of Germans now believe the United States is a reliable partner, compared with thirty-six per cent in Russia and forty-three per cent in China.
Good! Excellent! Outstanding! Go partner with them instead. Please!

It's like none of these people realize, despite it being explained to them at length, that they are ripping us off on trade and free riding on NATO. Trump is putting a stop to this (finally!) and Europe is going to have to pay for itself.

"But that's not fair!" Yes, it is fair, and that's why you're objecting.

#1  From people I have talked to and what I have read: the Bavarians like us, the Prussians think we are a menace, and the Easterners are mad that the Cold War is over and the US is to blame for everything bad... Also, the Old Order aristocrats are still mightily pissed off that the Age of Colonialism is over and they suspect that the US had a large part in that, too.
We are their Father Figure...? How, bizarre!

#14  Building cars in the US was started by the Japanese after the big oil embargo in the 70s introduced Americans to quality construction, low gas mileage, one price (not a multi-window display of extra charges) cars. The threat of auto states and unions for tariffs and quotas was headed off by the Japanese agreeing to quotas (for which the cut out the cheapest cars and moved up in class cause the public were buying them anyway). They then started up plants across the country, just in case in the future the issue resurfaced. File under - smart business.

#15  Every second German car on U.S. highways is actually built in the U.S. and the percentage is rising.

About 70% of German cars built in the U.S. are exported. So where's the rip off?

EU tariffs on passenger cars are higher (10% vs 2.5%), but proposals to lower them have been ignored by the U.S. The U.S. charges 25% on imported trucks (EU 10 %).

TTIP would have abolished those tariffs completely. The U.S. walked away.

All that whining about being "ripped off" is ludicrous. Think Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft. No U.S. complaints about their dominating positions worldwide.

Germany will have to pay more for defense and is already on its way to do so. But this is not a trade issue.

These days the most brutal dictator in the world gets a warmer reception than America's closest allies.

Well it seems you can do without allies. Good luck. China is smiling.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Dark days for the Palestinian cause
[DAWN] LAST week, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, was in London as part of his campaign to persuade Germany, La Belle France and the UK to ditch the nuclear agreement with Iran, just as the United States has done. While no public commitments were given, it is clear that despite their brave words, the European signatories to the deal have few options but to fall into line with Washington.

The problem for them is that Trump has threatened to apply tough secondary sanctions on banks and companies doing business with Iran. Few corporate chiefs would risk losing the right to operate in America, the world’s biggest market. So even if the French, German and British governments would like to keep their side of the nuclear bargain, most companies would be reluctant to enter into contracts with Iran, or continue with existing ones.

This is a point Netanyahu made with some relish during an interview with Evan Davis, the lead presenter on Newsnight, the BBC’s flagship news programme. According to him, the deal was already dead: which company would forsake doing business in a one trillion dollar economy for trading with Iran, a country with an economy just 3-4 per cent of America’s?

When asked how he would prevent Iran from returning to its nuclear enrichment programme, Netanyahu replied "All options are open", a clear warning that he was still itching to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities. And while Obama had pre-empted him by signing a historic deal with Iran, there are no such restraints in place with Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in the White House. If anything, his approach towards Iran is even more aggressive than his Israeli friend’s.

Davis went on to ask how the conflict with the Paleostinians would end if the Israelis were not prepared to make any concessions over Jerusalem, statehood and the return of land illegally usurped to create new settlements. Netanyahu made it clear that illusory sovereignty for Paleostinians wasn’t on the cards. "Call it what you like, autonomy or self-rule, but we will retain control over borders and security."

Citing the ineffectual, home-made rockets fired from Gazoo, he declared that Israeli borders had to be protected, making light of the scores of Paleostinians rubbed out by Israeli army snipers in recent weeks. Insisting that most of them were Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, "terrorists", he went on to claim that the civilians killed were being used as human shields.

Netanyahu’s trump card was saved for the end of the interview when he gloated over the fact that many Arab states now had good relations with Israel, and this shift in attitudes was a huge regional game-changer. It is true that Iran is more isolated than ever, and countries like Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
that partly funded Hamas, have withdrawn their support. Even the Paleostinian Authority under the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

Afghanistan
At least twelve killed in Kabul suicide blast
[Al Jazeera] At least 12 people have been killed, and more than 30 others maimed after a jacket wallah targeted an Afghan ministry building in Kabul, a government front man said.

The attacker blew himself at the entrance of the Rural Rehabilitation and Development Ministry in the west of the capital of Afghanistan, interior ministry front man, Najib Danish, said on Monday.

"Woman, children and employees of the (rehabilitation) ministry are among the victims," the interior ministry front man told Rooters news agency.

No group has grabbed credit for the deadly attack.

Afghan Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
on Saturday announced a surprise three-day ceasefire over the Moslem Eid al-Fitr holiday at the end of this week, their first offer of its kind.

The Taliban ceasefire came days after the government declared an unconditional ceasefire of its own against the gang.

Noor asks Taliban to join political process by seizing the ceasefire opportunity
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Chief Executive of Jamiat-e-Islami and former governor of Balkh province Ata Mohammad Noor welcomed the announcement of ceasefire by the Taliban group.

In a statement released online after the declaration of temporary ceasefire by the Taliban, Noor said “Taliban should seize the opportunity & join the political process to help us realise the people’s wish for lasting peace in Afghanistan.”

The Taliban group announced earlier on Saturday that the leadership of the group has decided to declared ceasefire during the three days of Eid-ul-Fitr during which no attack will be carried out on Afghan forces.

The announcement by the Taliban group apparently followed the declaration of the ceasefire by the Afghan government.

Earlier on Thursday last week, President Ghani announced a ceasefire with the Taliban group and said the Afghan forces will not conduct offensive operations against the group from 27th of the holy month of Ramadan until the 5th day of Eid.

The declaration of ceasefire by the Afghan government and the Taliban group has been widely welcomed on domestic and international level as efforts are underway to end the ongoing violence through reconciliation.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Baltimore Detective Pleads Not Guilty, Gets 18 Years In Prison
[PATCH] A former Baltimore detective was sentenced to federal prison time. He was the second officer from the Baltimore Police Department to be sentenced Thursday in a case that brought to light a corrupt contingent within the eighth largest municipal police department in the U.S.

Former Detective Marcus Roosevelt Taylor, 30, of Glen Burnie, entered a plea of not guilty in the federal racketeering case. He was sentenced hours after the highest ranking officer in the racketeering conspiracy was ordered to serve federal prison time.

Seven members of the 3,100-member Baltimore Police Department were indicted in the federal racketeering case. Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, who headed up the gun trace task force, was sentenced to 25 years Thursday morning after pleading guilty to his role in the racketeering conspiracy.

The same judge was responsible for sentencing in Taylor's case Thursday afternoon, ruling he must serve 18 years in federal prison.

A federal jury convicted Taylor in February of racketeering conspiracy, racketeering and Hobbs Act robbery. The Hobbs Act involves corruption of public officials using their positions of power to extort or rob.

At the three-week trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing Taylor stole money, property and narcotics from victims, including people who had not committed any crimes. He stole between $200 and $200,000 from his victims, according to authorities, who said he also falsified reports and committed overtime fraud.

Taylor was a member of the gun trace task force, a now disbanded unit in the Baltimore Police Department that was formed to take guns off the streets. Instead, prosecutors said Taylor and other members of the force stole drugs and weapons from those they detained, in some cases without filing a police report.

U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Taylor on Thursday afternoon to 18 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for racketeering conspiracy and related offenses, including robbery and overtime fraud.
