Kaepernick III - Seattle DE Michael Bennett Sits For National Anthem
Here we go again...

Seahawks DE Michael Bennett became the latest NFL player to sit for the national anthem, ahead of Sunday’s preseason game against the Chargers. He referenced the still-unsigned Colin Kaepernick (of whom Bennett has said, "of course he’s being blackballed"), but Bennett said this weekend’s white supremacy rally in Charlottesville and accompanying violence is what spurred him to act.

"Seeing everything in Virginia...I just wanted to be able to use my platform to continuously speak out on injustice," Bennett said.

Bennett remained on the bench with a towel over his shoulders during the playing of the anthem in Los Angeles, rising to join his teammates after the song finished.

Bennett said he will continue to sit for the anthem this season, joining other players like Marshawn Lynch, who did so during the Raiders’ preseason game on Saturday.

Nothing to say about the Antifa groups, of course. Some doublespeak / ass covering follows; 'I love the military' and stuff like that, in the column.

#2  I got so tired of the 24/7 coverage of this last year. I don't give a shit if players act like idiots, but if I hear nothing but what the idiots are doing by the announcers/press I will stop watching the NFL.

I go there for entertainment and as a refuge from politics. They corrupt it (even more) I'm done.

Conservatives Must Regulate Google And All of Silicon Valley Into Submission
h/t Instapundit
Google's fascist witch-burning of an honest engineer for refusing to bow down at the altar of politically correct lies was the final straw, an unequivocal warning to conservatives that there's a new set of rules, and that we need to play by them. First they came for the tech geeks; we’re next. That means Republicans at both the federal and the state level need to rein in the skinny-jeaned fascist social justice warriors who control Silicon Valley ‐ and, to a growing extent, our society ‐ through the kind of crushing regulation of these private business that we conservatives used to oppose.

They're going to hate the new rules.

Now, the old rule for us conservatives was that businesses could do pretty much whatever they pleased, with minimal regulation, if they focused on maximizing profit and thereby rained benefits down upon society in the form of wealth and job creation. It was a good system, but, like all systems, to get benefits you have to meet certain obligations. For businesses, one obligation was to generally stay out of the cultural and political octagon.

But the Woke Weenies of Silicon Valley, flush with cash, power, and unearned smugness, decided that they just couldn’t keep on the sidelines and make their money. No, they had to make change, as in, changing us. They violated the most important of the old rules ‐ they chose a side. In the past, when a company or even an industry crossed the line, it rarely made much difference. So some insurance company was outspokenly progressive? So what? The one exception was the mainstream media/Hollywood complex ‐ its actions were extremely annoying (and destructive), but it had the First Amendment to protect it and we conservatives had alternate channels to get our ideas across.

Not so with the Googles, the Facebooks, and the Twitters. Their antics are not necessarily protected by the First Amendment, their internet monopolies choke out alternative channels, and, unlike the line-crossers of the past, they possess enormous amounts of personal information that can be used to manipulate, intimidate, and punish political opponents ‐ you know, us. Worse, their leaders are evangelists of cultural Marxism, so these companies don’t even have the fig leaf of objectivity that the mainstream media has (or had) to constrain them.

Yet they still expect the same laissez-faire treatment as any other business even as they try to gut us politically. They discriminate against conservatives, they actively assist leftist partisans like Felonia von Pantsuit, and they aggressively silence conservative voices within their apps. They imagine that they can adopt new rules for themselves while keeping in place the old rules that prevent us from defending ourselves because of "free enterprise" or something.

#6  Hey, let's use the power of government to punish companies we don't like. Doesn't sound very conservative to me.

Seems like the problem is really the opposite - our markets are insufficiently competitive. Otherwise, alienating half your customer base would be a non-starter. So, thought experiment, what makes markets non-competitive?

#12  Just apply existing laws on monopolies. Acquiring a vertical monopoly structure seems to be a big Google feature and entry point for action.

Which means even pockets as deep as Microsoft's have trouble competing against market leaders.

#17  Phil, I suggest a less polished version of linux, maybe one of the ones without systemd, like slackware.

I don't like any of the totalitarian societies we've handed over our manufacturing to, whether they're google, apple, or China.

Google and Apple have basically made a deal with the socialists abroad and here, that the crocodile would eat them last, and they've made mountains of hundreds of billions in cash from it.

Every bit of time we've let these left-libertarians define liberty as "We get to do what we what, while the rest of you get nickel and dimed to death in the name of imaginary externalities" we wake up less free, and broke on top of things. We've reached the point where Silicon Valley can have their power, or the rest of us maybe can get to be free, but both of those conditions can't coexist now.

#19  Anti-trust action is way to slow to have any effect.

We tried that on Microsoft's windows os, and they responded by investing in the nearly bankrupt Apple os to show there was no monopoly in operating systems. And now that company, Apple, has a higher market cap than Microsoft.

These companies are smarter and quicker than government.

If you want to break tech companies, then you need a new approach that can hit them faster than they can react.

I would suggest cutting out all the tax exemptions that they use. The IRS knows all of them. Tell Congress and cancel them. This change will add competition to their business model. Most of these exemptions were put in the tax code to exclude new entrants into their business.

Additionally, we could penalize companies who fail to protect their customer's data. This would fall more heavily on those companies with more customers.

Moreover, we could create product liability for software vendors to support their software products just like we reacquire for car manufactures. If my Dodge's airbag is a hazard ten years after I bought it, then Dodge is responsible to fix it at no cost or pay for the ensuing injuries, then why shouldn't Microsoft's dodgy OS be liable for zero day bugs that compromise my computer?

There are tons of things that could be done here. We need to decide which are the right things to do.

#20  Network access and the network will change radically when Musk and SpaceX launch their 12000 sat network. (starting maybe end of 2019) On the regime sides... the great firewall of China falls... DNS (if properly configured) will be hitting a random walk of Musk sats and not google's 8.8.8.8 or comcast's # or ATT's. (^8
And that's just the start.

#21  Antenna will be a flat phased array to multiple sats. Your antenna has a built in wifi-router that connects your actual devices...
Posted by: 3dc || 08/14/2017 22:49 Comments || Top||

#22  More satellite coms are not really going to be a solution. The amount of orbits are fixed. Perhaps Musk can get into them for a while, but they will quickly be cross loaded with other sats resulting in the Kessler Syndrome throughout the useful orbits.

Either someone has to put up a robot maid satellite to clean up the mess, which could clean up regular working satellites; so, not going to happen. Or we will just lose the ability to use certain orbits because of space trash.

Tragedy of the Commons anyone?

Big Pharma CEO finds excuse to resign from presidential council
[The Hill] An African-American CEO of a major pharmaceutical company has resigned from a presidential council in a direct response to President Trump's remarks about "many sides" being to blame for violence over the weekend in Charlottesville.

Merck CEO and Chairman Kenneth C. Frazier said he was leaving Trump's American Manufacturing Council, arguing U.S. leaders must "clearly reject expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy."

"Our country's strength stems from its diversity and the contributions made by men and women of different faiths, races, sexual orientations and political beliefs," Frazier said in a statement.

"America's leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal," he continued.

"As CEO of Merck, and as a matter of personal conscience, I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism."

Caribbean-Latin America
CIA Director: Venezuela could become a risk to the United States
[New York Post] CIA director Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that Venezuela could become a "risk" to the US if chaos continues to roil the South American country.

"The Cubans are there; the Russians are there, the Iranians, Hezbollah are there," he said on "Fox News Sunday." "This is something that has a risk of getting to a very, very bad place, so America needs to take this very seriously."

He said President Trump was just trying to give the country’s people hope when he floated the idea on Friday that the US would take military action after condemning Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro for human rights abuses and calling for him to hold "free and fair elections."

"What I believe the president is trying to accomplish this week was to give the Venezuelan people hope and opportunity to create a situation where democracy can be restored," Pompeo said.

But Trump’s comments led Maduro’s son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, to respond by warning Washington it would retaliate with force.

"If the US soils the homeland, the rifles would come to New York and take the White House," he said, Politico reported on Saturday.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Trump has asked for a report on what could happen next in the country.

...As much as Venezuela deserves it, not only no but hell no. Pi$$ing off all of South America just so we can create another martyr? That nonsense would be enough to get me to vote Democrat/Socialist as a matter of principle.

Now, on the other hand...Venezuela has a nearby target they might go after that could (stress the could) end up bringing us in: the Netherlands Antilles. It's very much a potential Argentina-vs-UK situation, and has been for decades.

#4  (g)rom,

Good question, and I should have been more clear. Venezuela has done no more than bad mouth us, but they are a rabidly Socialist dictatorship, which frankly deserves overthrow and trial. On the other hand, 'deserving' and 'practical/desirable' are two very different things. Their only real asset now is their oil, and we have shown that we don't have to care about that the way we used to. (Twenty years ago, had we been faced with the loss of their oil, we'd be spinning up the 82nd Airborne)

And then there is this.

One of Venezuela’s most powerful leaders may have put out an order to kill Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a fervent critic of the South American country’s government, according to intelligence obtained by the U.S. last month.

Though federal authorities couldn’t be sure at the time if the uncorroborated threat was real, they took it seriously enough that Rubio has been guarded by a security detail for several weeks in both Washington and Miami.

Home Front: Culture Wars
We'll Have More Charlottesvilles
h/t Instapundit
[PJMedia] ...the issue that so many have (wrongly, in my view) made the central one--to direct all opprobrium at the Nazis who scheduled the original demonstration--also has a long lineage. Have you seen the old movie "Skokie"? It’s about a Nazi march in Skokie, Illinois, and stars Danny Kaye. He plays himself, a Jew very upset that monsters are going to parade through the streets of his town, and he resolves to fight it. Which we all applaud. But the film stresses that the Nazis are entitled to march, just as the Nazis were entitled to demonstrate in Charlottesville. And when they do, the rest of us should denounce them. As we do, with rare exceptions. That’s the way it’s supposed to work.
And, IMO, anybody who thinks that antifa aren't, at least, as bad as Nazis is an idiot.
It’s not supposed to degenerate into violence. Political leaders and the cops are supposed to prevent that. Both failed in Charlottesville. The pols condemned the Nazis but not the anarchist antifa mob, and the cops waited until the last minute before they acted. Why didn’t they act earlier? Most likely for two reasons: they weren’t ordered to, and because they didn’t want to end in front of politically ambitious prosecutors and DAs, a la Baltimore. They have learned that they themselves are, often as not, blamed for the violence.
Extremism breeds extremism. One can understand, though not approve, low IQs joining the Nazis (high IQ join alt-right)

#4  The alt-right and the radical left are meant for each other. The term alt-right has been attributed to Richard Spencer but it got legs with Hillary's (Hillary and "legs?") campaign. It seems fairly well-defined. The left has been organizing for a long time and is a polymorphous amalgam of various groups. The lame-stream media salivates and gets a boner over these staged right-left melees that pop up. The left has found that trying to take down historical statues such as Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson are triggers for the extreme right. Meanwhile all the useful idiots play their part according to script.

Occupy Wallstreet, BLM, and AntiFa have all stirred up things in the larger cities. I typed in "jobs for community organizers" just to see what came up. It seems to be a cottage industry with fairly good pay--definitely above minimum wages. I'd bet, these jobs attract many who don't really give a sh!t about ideology right or left.

The second was in San Jose where the mayor and police chief sat back and let the shit happen and, well, shit happens. The protesters attacked Trump supporters with eggs and fists.

I tried to tell my family that when you go out looking for trouble it's usually not hard to find. The only problem is you might get more than you bargained for. Then the rest of us have to hear about it ad nauseam everywhere we go. I'm really sick of hearing about it already.

China-Japan-Koreas
Pompeo: North Korea Moving Toward Ability to Hit U.S. With Nuclear Strike at ‘Alarming Rate'
[Free Beacom] CIA Director Mike Pompeo appeared on "Fox News Sunday" to discuss North Korean nuclear development, which he said is proceeding at an "ever-alarming rate."

Pompeo said he could not get into specifics but said that North Korea's progress has gone on for decades. When host Chris Wallace pressed him about how close North Korea is to being able to hit the U.S. mainland, Pompeo said that it was alarming but hard to define.

"It's difficult to put a timeline to these things," Pompeo said. "But each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons test, they develop expertise, they expand the envelope, and so it is probably fair to say they are moving toward that at an ever-alarming rate."

Pompeo also said that the problem has been ongoing through previous U.S. administrations, but he argued President Donald Trump was making strides to effect change.

"They've been growing closer for two decades plus ... Previous administrations haven't taken this on," Pompeo said. "President Trump has made it clear that it is his intention to protect the American people."

He pointed specifically to the U.N. sanctions against North Korea.

"You saw this past week we made real progress," Pompeo added. "My hat's off to the president, Secretary Tillerson, Ambassador Haley. They have united the world with sanctions against North Korea: a 15-0 vote. We've seen the Chinese say for among the first times, they believe the answer has to be a denuclearized peninsula. That's exactly the policy for the Trump administration."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel-Jordan peace agreement: The emperor has no clothes
[IsraelNationalNews] From Israel's prime minister down to the lowliest clerk, from the Commander in Chief down to the lowest ranking officer, from the Mossad down to the police by way of the Shabak ‐ since 1994, everyone has been been chanting the same mantra about peace with Jordan. The prevalent reasoning is that peace with Jordan is Israel's most important strategic resource for the following reasons:
Mostly, IMO, psychological - 2000 years of powerlessness left a deep imprint in Jewish psyche. Jews are pathetically eager to appease gentiles.
In exchange for recognition, Israel granted the Hashemite Kingdom, and especially its king, special status in the Jerusalem sites considered holy by Islam, mainly the al Aqsa Mosque, giving Hussein and his son Abdullah today, a significant stamp of approval in the Islamic world. This stamp of approval is especially important in granting much-needed legitimacy to the Hashemite Kingdom. The Palestinian majority and even some Bedouin groups question that legitimacy, since the Hashemites are not originally Jordanian, having come from the western section of the Arabian Peninsula, Hijaz, where the two Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina are located.

The British gave the Transjordan Emirate to Abdullah I, great grandfather of today's Abdullah. He is considered a foreign transplant, giving rise to questions of legitimate rule, and the special status at al Aqsa is intended to give him a shot of legitimacy, stabilizing his regime. The king pays the salaries of hundreds of Jerusalem Waqf officials.

Another payment Israel took upon itself is the handing over of 50 million cubic meters of drinkable water to Jordan every year. The plan was to bring this water from the Sea of Galilee, but the drought of the last few years has lowered the level of the water in the lake, so Israel has substituted expensive desalinated water instead. Jordanian agriculture in the Jordan Valley is made possible in part because of this Israeli water.

Where did we go wrong?
The first and main point is that Israel ignores the fact that the peace agreement is totally dependent on the continuation of the illegitimate Hashemite dynasty. In 1994 that meant Hussein, today it is Abdullah II, but the future is unclear, because there are quite a few people in Jordan and outside it who see Abdullah as the last Hashemite monarch. What comes next? There are several possible answers to that query, ranging from a military junta made up of local Bedouin ruling the various populations, on to a civil war that leads to the country splitting in two, with a Palestinian state rising in the northwestern part of the country where there is a Palestinian Arab majority.

...The peace agreement upon which Israel and Jordan are signed and everything Israel has paid, is paying and is willing to pay to preserve and guard that peace will be utterly worthless the day a rebellion breaks out against the king, or some assassin or suicide bomber, G-d forbid, succeeds in killing him. The house of cards Israel built around him will collapse instantaneously, the peace agreement and any others signed in its wake will become fond memories. Whoever takes the king's place will restart the process and expect Israel to pay even more than it had originally paid ‐ that is, if the country remains united. If that new leader is a Palestinian Arab, the price will entail the return of a significant number of 1948 refugees to the state of Israel, not to the Palestinian State that may exist by then.

...The cost of the peace agreement to Israel is prohibitive. First, Israel respects the status it granted the kingdom in Jerusalem, even though there is no precedent in the entire world for a sovereign state granting another country special rights in its capital city on that state's most holy site. In 1994, when this was decided during the peace talks, Israel wasn't worried about Hussein who hated Arafat and agreed with Israel that there must never be a Palestinian state. The status Israel granted him on the Temple Mount was in order to prevent Arafat and the Islamic Movement from taking over the site.

...Jordan today, it must be concluded, is working non-stop behind the cover of its peace treaty with Israel to destroy the Jewish State and create a Palestinian one instead. What is worse is that Israel refuses to admit to the situation and continues most carefully to keep the agreement, hoping calm will prevail along the border until the next elections. Every politician knows that if, during his term, relations with Jordan deteriorate, the media ‐ our shallow, slanted and agenda-ridden media ‐ will accuse him of being the cause of the agreement's nullification, making him pay the price in the next round of elections. That is why politicians bolster up the temporary tactical quiet, ignoring the strategic threat to the very existence of the state posed by the peace agreement.
Jordan will become a Palestinian state. If Israel initiates the change, it can ride it and exploit it for our benefit. Otherwise...

#1  Jordan keeps a lot of the Paleos under surveillance.

This is an outcome of the 1970 war between Jordan and the PLO/PFLP.

The Jordanian troops have demonstrated loyalty to the crown over and over again. As long as there troops are paid well and honored by the King, this is likely to continue. The crown prince Hussain is thought to be anti Hamas and to be as suspicious of the general Paleo population as his father. Of course his mother is a Palestinian, though born in Kuwait, so who knows what he really thinks.

China-Japan-Koreas
The North Korea gambit
[IsraelNationalNews] First, understand that North Korea is a pawn in a geostrategic chess game being played by China and Russia against the United States.

The North Korean nuclear missile threat is built on technology provided by Russia and China, to threaten and if necessary wage nuclear war by proxy against the U.S. and its Pacific allies. Their North Korea gambit is to so increase the nuclear threat against the United States, so that U.S. security guarantees to Japan, South Korea and other allies will no longer be credible.

Will the U.S. sacrifice Chicago and Denver to protect Seoul and Tokyo?

China, Russia, and North Korea don’t think so.

...Begging China and Russia to rescue the U.S. from nuclear North Korea plays right into their hands by messaging our allies that the United States is helpless, that real power over North Korea is not in Washington, but in Beijing and Moscow.

Winning to Beijing, Moscow, and Pyongyang looks exactly like what President Obama’s Director of National Intelligence, General Clapper, proposed in a August 8 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, and what Obama’s national security advisor Susan Rice proposed in the New York Times--learn to live with a nuclear North Korea.

If the U.S. learns to live with a nuclear-armed North Korea, will we also learn to live with a nuclear-armed Iran? With China annexing the South China Sea and Taiwan? With Russia conquering the Baltic states and the other territories of the former USSR?

Iran, China, and Russia will probably think so. This way leads to global nuclear war, or to global surrender by the West, and a new world order dominated by Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.
What do the swamp cares as long as they get rid of Trump?

#1  I don't think China cares too much about Russia anymore. And, North Korea is not going to be acceptable to them as a partner - who needs a lieutenant that will not follow orders? Iran? No idea really, but a bit remote for China to care all that much. Russia is probably more interested in Iran than China, mainly for "thorn in the side" purposes. We call them "China", but the Chinese call themselves the "Middle Kingdom". I think that is their goal, to regain a perimeter of tribute paying nations that provide a buffer against invasions into the motherland.

#2  The Chinese ignore one aspect that their peril, the American public, who given the right motivation could boycott anything made in China with little the Swamp in Washington could do to prevent. The Chinese don't have a record of dealing with severe economic downturns. That would crash their market as well as the Chamber of Commerce/UniParty cabal left desperately searching for other bases of operation. I suspect a lot of 'relabeling' in Central America would quickly occur.

P2K: Might be a good strategy. Trump's initiative to "make products "American" and bring industry back" seems like a step in the right direction. China buys products from the Norks and helps support their pitiful economy. Pressure on China might squeeze the Nork economy even more and would either encourage them to become more bellicose or less.

#6  North Korea is a pawn in a geostrategic chess game

Not a Pawn, a Knight.
Freakishly, they could advance either left or right left on their own council. China accepting the UN blockade on exports (should it even come to fruition) may be the threshold that triggers DPRK's myopic vision of being a world power.
Much easier to use the Romeo's on Chinese seaports.

#7  Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Dell and a number of other corporations along with their share holders will scream bloody murder. But, hey, screw 'em.

China's economy is already shaky, I understand. They're being squeezed on low-cost manufacturing by Viet Nam and a few others, and at home they've got a major credit bubble threatening to pop. They wouldn't have to lose all their American contracts, just enough at the bottom to close a bunch of Walmart and Dollar Store suppliers.

With regard to the companies listed: Mr. Wife spent a number of years as a Purchasing manager, and one of his concerns was to find and vet alternative suppliers for all of his raw materials, suppliers who could quickly get up to speed when, not if, problems cropped up with the current suppler. If Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, etc. are not taking this approach, they are fools. Floods, earthquakes, and electrical outages alone will shut down supplier production, never mind war and politics.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Mossad Chief warns: Iran is taking over the Middle East
Mossad Director Yossi Cohen briefed the cabinet Sunday, warning that the Iranian regime is expanding its control across the Middle East through proxy forces in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.

"In places where Iran's presence is limited, Iran is working to fill the void." he said.

Cohen also said that Iran has not abandoned its aspirations to become a nuclear power, and that the nuclear agreement signed between the world powers and Iran only strengthens Iranian aggression in the region.

The Mossad head also told ministers that Iran's economy has gotten stronger ever since signing the nuclear accords in 2015, a trend that has been reinforced by recent international agreements. The agreement freed frozen Iranian funds and led to trade agreements with European countries eager to profit from the opportunity. Under Obama, the US also sent Iran hundreds of millions of dollars after Iran freed US hostages.

Turkish Army renews offensive on Kurdish-held villages in northern Aleppo
[AlMasdar] Overnight, fresh festivities erupted between the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces, backed by Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
and Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) factions, and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

According to a Kurdish source close to al-Masdar News, Ottoman Turkish troops and aligned Syrian rebels launched a brief assault on the SDF-held town of Maranaz under the cover of darkness. Clashes continued throughout the night, but the Ottoman Turkish-led attack proved largely fruitless with zero ground gained in Aleppo province as daylight broke on Sunday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Standing Buffalo drew a bead on his old enemy and squeezed the trigger...
Ottoman Turkish artillery units opened fire on the villages of Ayn Daknah, al-Biloniyah, Sheikh Issa, al-Samuqah and Tall Rifaat today, targeting positions controlled by SDF fighters.

Sporadic firefights are also taking place across Efrin’s eastern frontline. al-Masdar News was unable to obtain information regarding casualties due to the renewed fighting.

ISIL terrorists storm strategic city in southern Hasakah
[AlMasdar] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) launched a desperate offensive on the strategic city of al-Shaddadi, Sunday, targeting the defenses of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the area.

ISIS began the assault by pushing north from the Deir Ezzor provincial border, striking the SDF’s positions just south of al-Shaddadi in the hopes of catching the Kurdish-led forces off-guard.

While festivities are still ongoing, it appears that the SDF have mostly repelled the Islamic State’s attack after killing several of the terrorist combatants that were attempting to reach the city.

Al-Shaddadi is located near the Hasakah-Deir Ezzor provincial border in the southern part of the al-Hasakah Governorate; it was the Islamic State’s former stronghold in northeastern Syria.

[AlMasdar] The Salafist tough guys of Faylaq al-Rahman launched a powerful counter-assault in the eastern suburbs of Damascus this morning, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions at ’Ayn Tarma.

Faylaq al-Rahman turbans stormed the Syrian Army’s defenses earlier this morning after losing a large amount of territory to the latter near the ’Ayn Tarma Meat Market.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
the Faylaq al-Rahman assault would not last long, as the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade drove back the turbans and secured the areas they recently captured in ’Ayn Tarma.

The Syrian Arab Army launched their east Damascus offensive in July, following their successful operations in the nearby suburbs of al-Qaboun and Tishreen.

Fleas in Arizona test positive for the PLAGUE
[DailyMail] Fleas in two Arizona counties have tested positive for the plague, the same catastrophic Bubonic disease that killed millions, according to officials.

Navajo County Public Health officials confirmed on Friday that fleas in the region tested positive for the disease following similar reports from Coconino County Public Health Services District in Arizona.

Both are located in the northern part of the state.

'Navajo County Health Department is urging the public to take precautions to reduce their risk of exposure to this serious disease, which can be present in fleas, rodents, rabbits and predators that feed upon these animals,' the public health warning states.

Because the medical establishment is aware and the health authorities have procedures and protocols, neighboring state tend to dump victim on them, usually too late in the process, so the state gets the death count.

Simple precautions include wearing long pants outside urban areas and avoiding dead animals. Certainly keeps the infection rate down to a handful.

#5  Here in Colorado a group of prairie dogs gets a positive test every year. One year it hit the open space behind my sister's house and wiped them all out. The coyotes had a hard time of it and left after invading the neighborhood looking for food and eating a few small dogs. The bald eagle population that was there moved away too as there was no food source for them.

Been 5 years and the prairie dog still haven't come back.

#10  Even if you caught the plague wouldn't modern medicine help just a little? Only if your caretaker was aware of this possibility & acted in time. It is possible to contract the plague in NM while driving cross country, and then show up in an Atlanta ER with the usual vague symptoms. Per Wiki: "Patients will die without early treatment, some within 36 hours." A very long time ago, I worked at a NM hospital. The only plague patient we had that year was a child missed on the first vision by a specialist in pediatric infectious illness, who just happened to have the ER job that night. He even thought of plague as a possibility, but dismissed it. Within 24 hours the child was back, got the right treatment & survived.

#11  The CDC page on plague can be found here.

Plague is a disease that affects humans and other mammals. It is caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Humans usually get plague after being bitten by a rodent flea that is carrying the plague bacterium or by handling an animal infected with plague. Plague is infamous for killing millions of people in Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, modern antibiotics are effective in treating plague. Without prompt treatment, the disease can cause serious illness or death. Presently, human plague infections continue to occur in the western United States, but significantly more cases occur in parts of Africa and Asia.

Recommended antibiotic treatment for plague:

Begin appropriate IV therapy as soon as plague is suspected. Gentamicin and fluoroquinolones are typically first-line treatments in the United States. Duration of treatment is 10 to 14 days, or until 2 days after fever subsides. Oral therapy may be substituted once the patient improves.

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) members in Afghanistan -- including a provincial leader -- have been killed in a United States air strike, an official said on Aug. 13.

General John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said Aug. 10’s strike killed Abdul Rahman, who he claimed was a provincial leader in ISIS’s Afghanistan branch, known as ISIS-Khorasan Province (IS-K).

Rahman’s death comes a month after U.S. forces killed Abu Sayed, the head of IS-K. That marked the third time in a year that the affiliate had lost its leader. "The death of Abdul Rahman deals yet another blow to the big shotship of ISIS-K," Nicholson said in a statement.

"He found out just like those before him that there are no safe havens in Afghanistan. We will hunt them down until they are no longer a threat to the Afghan people and the region," he added.

Nicholson said that three other senior IS-K members had been killed in the strike in Darah-Ye Pech district in the northeastern province of Kunar.

He identified Rahman as IS-K’s provincial emir in Kunar and said he had been a "primary candidate" to succeed Sayed as the affiliate’s leader following the latter’s death, also in an air strike in Kunar, on July 11.

U.S. forces have regularly been targeting ISIS fighters in Afghanistan since the hard boyz gained a foothold in the east of the country in 2015.

Fighters and Indian soldiers killed in Kashmir clash
[Al Jazeera] Two Indian soldiers and three separatist fighters have been killed in a fierce shootout in Indian-administered Kashmire.

Hundreds of Indian soldiers surrounded Awneera, a village about 50km south of the main city of Srinagar, on Saturday night following a tip-off about fighters in the area, AFP news agency reported.

Kashmire has been divided between India and Pakistain since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Both claim the territory in full.

Muneer Khan, Kashmiri police chief, told Al Jazeera that fighting took place in the Shopian area.

"We laid the cordon yesterday evening after we received information about the presence of five bad boys," he said, adding: "In the morning we were able to recover three bodies."

Khan said the three fighters belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group and were from nearby villages.

Three Indian soldiers were maimed in the fighting, Khan said.

Mugabe Says No, As VP Offers to Resign Over 'Public Humiliation' By Grace
[All Africa] Embattled Zim-bob-wean Deputy President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly offered to resign last week over what he called repeated "public humiliation" by President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
's wife Grace.

According to Zim-bob-we Independent, Mnangagwa handed in his resignation letter to President Mugabe, 93, last week on Monday, but the nonagenarian rejected it saying the deputy president was "jumping the gun".

Unnamed sources claimed that Grace's recent public outburst against Mnangagwa was one of the reasons that he wanted to resign.

The sources said that Mnangagwa believed there was a plot against him by the system to kicking him out.

"The vice-president gave mainly two reasons for seeking to quit. First, he cited public attacks and humiliation by Grace at the Zanu-PF headquarters on July 27 and the same thing two days later, on July 29, in Chinhoyi. Second, Mnangagwa said he now believes there is a plot against him by the system, given recent developments and allegedly false intelligence reports which on many issues made him think Mugabe wanted him to be his successor," the unnamed sources were quoted as saying.

Grace recently told a ruling party youth rally that she wasn't sure if she and the vice president were still friends.

Speaking mostly in Shona, she also said she'd been approached by unnamed people who wanted to take to the streets to remove Mnangagwa from office.

The First Lady had previously told Zim-bob-we's vice presidents - Mnangangwa and Phelekezela Mphoko - at a campaign rally in Chinhoyi that they were serving at her husband's will.

Derna Shura Council vows to hand over body of pro-Haftar pilot
[Libya Observer] Derna Shura Council said Sunday that it would hand over the body of the pilot Adel al-Jahani to a committee of the city's elders, which will coordinate with his family for taking the body.

"We have been keeping al-Jahani's body for ten days as a tit-for-tat reaction as Dignity Operation had kept the body of one of our fighters for more than two weeks, let alone crucifying him." The Derna Shura Council added in its statement.

It explained as well that it kept the body without doing it any harm, unlike what Dignity Operation forces did to the council's fighters.

Meanwhile,

Derna elders and dignitaries council announced earlier the formation of a committee to receive the body of the pilot, who was killed as his fighter jet was downed on August 02 by Derna Shura Council.

Dignity Operation retaliated for the downing by shutting down all entrances of Derna disallowing the residents from going out or in leading to worsened living conditions amid shortages of food, fuel and medicines.

On August 10, the municipality of Derna, elders council and civil societies all issued a joint emergency shout-out to the officials in Libya telling them to save Derna from a looming humanitarian disaster due to the siege on the city by Haftar-led forces.

Forensic test confirms use of same pistol in two attacks on policemen in Karachi
[DAWN] KARACHI: A forensic examination of spent bullet casings collected from the scene of the crime after the killing of a DSP Traffic along with his driver on Saturday confirmed that the same weapon had been used earlier in a fatal attack on four coppers in June.

Police officials investigating the killing of DSP Traffic Hanif Khan and his driver, constable Sultan Ishtiaq, in Azizabad on Friday morning believed that the assailants in both the attacks were the same.

"The same group appeared to be involved in both the incidents, as the police’s forensic division has confirmed that the same 9mm pistol was used in these attacks," said SSP Munir Ahmed Sheikh of the Counter-Terrorism Department of police.

The responsibility for the two gun attacks had already been claimed by Ansarul Sharia Pakistain (ASP), a recently formed Lion of Islam group, as per the pamphlets found at the scene of the crimes.

Kenya opposition vows ‘will not relent’ as eleven die in poll protests
[DAWN] NAIROBI: Kenya’s defeated opposition coalition vowed on Saturday they would not halt their bid to overturn a "sham" election result, which sparked violent protests that have left 11 people dead.

Protests flared in opposition bastions as soon as President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor on Friday night after an election his rival Raila Odinga claimed was massively rigged.

Kenya is no stranger to post-election violence, and scars still run deep from a disputed 2007 vote which led to two months of ethno-political festivities, leaving 1,100 dead and 600,000 displaced. However protests remained isolated on Saturday, with several hundred demonstrators engaging in running battles with police who quickly dispersed what Interior Minister Fred Matiangi referred to as "criminal elements".

on Sunday after allegedly trying to run over a police officer in a cop shoppe parking lot and then driving off, as cops shot up the vehicle.

Police launched a manhunt for a second suspect who was also in the car when it sped away from the Ayarot Police Station near Beersheba.

An officer at the station shot at the tires of the car.

There were no injuries reported in the incident, apparently because an officer stepped out of the car’s way in time.

The motive for the apparent attack was not immediately clear.

Police gave chase after the vehicle, which stopped minutes later. Two men jumped and tried to make their escape on foot. One of the men, apparently the driver, was caught and arrested. The second man evaded the cops and fled.

US-backed Syria forces battle ISIS in Raqqa old city
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US-backed fighters fought pitched battles Sunday with ISIS hard boyz inside their Syria bastion Raqqa, an AFP correspondent said.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, the Arab-Kurd alliance, first entered Raqqa two months ago and have since captured more than half of the northern city, but their progress has met fierce resistance from ISIS.

On Sunday, the two sides battled inside Raqqa’s Old City, trading volleys of mortar rounds and heavy machinegun fire, said the correspondent who was on the outskirts of the historic center.

A warplane from the US-led coalition provided air cover and bombed ISIS positions in the Old City, with plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

"There is heavy fighting. Our forces are trying to surround more and more ISIS," said Nuri Mahmud, a front man for the Kurdish YPG militia that dominates the SDF.

He said ISIS hard boyz were "using every means at their disposal to survive".

Near the ancient wall surrounding the Old City, the AFP correspondent saw SDF fighters help five maimed comrades to safety after they were hit by shrapnel from a landmine kaboom.

ISIS fighters have heavily mined the city to slow the SDF advance, and are also using booby-trapped cars, drones and jacket wallahs.

Nevertheless the US-backed alliance has seized nine districts in the city’s west and east since first entering Raqqa on June 6 after a months-long campaign.

The fight for Raqqa has prompted tens of thousands of civilians to flee, with many maimed by crossfire or ISIS-planted bombs during their escape.

The United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
has estimated that between 20,000 and 50,000 people remain in the city, though others have given lower estimates.

Zakharov on the possibility of nuclear war between the US and the DPRK: situation critical

However, in Washington about the possibility of nuclear war with North Korea, expressed more optimistic. So, the head of the Central intelligence Agency Michael Pompeo, citing intelligence, said that while there is no evidence of the possibility of such negative developments.

I heard a lot of arguments that the U.S. is on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea. But I have no intelligence who would say that we have reached this situation," said Pompeo, unable to restrain himself from another "formidable studs" to the North Korean authorities and adding that "strategic patience" of the United States against recalcitrant Pyongyang has really dried up.

China-Japan-Koreas
High Levels of Activity at North Korea's Sinpo South Shipyard
[38North] Recent commercial satellite imagery reveals several developments suggesting that North Korea may be accelerating the development of the sea-based leg of its nuclear forces. Of particular interest in the imagery is that netting or tarps have been suspended above both the fore and aft decks of the SINPO-class submarine obscuring any activity taking place beneath them. This was last done prior to the July 9, 2016 test of the Pukguksong-1, suggesting that the North may be preparing for a new series of "at sea" test launches, has undertaken modifications or upgrades to the submarine’s launch systems, or is developing a more advanced version of the Pukguksong-1. Recent ejection tests of an SLBM also support the assessment that an at-sea SLBM test may be forthcoming.

Additionally, imagery of the Mayang-do Navy Shipyard and Submarine Base shows the same number of ROMEO-class submarines that are usually berthed there, indicating that a recent spike in ROMEO activity in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) was a singular rather than force-wide event.

Commercial satellite imagery from August 7, although partially cloud covered, provides a limited look at the status of the SINPO-class[1] experimental ballistic missile submarine (SSBA), the submersible test stand barge and parts of the Mayang-do Navy Shipyard and Submarine Base.

As noted in our July report, sometime during the last week in May, the SINPO-class submarine was repositioned forward along its dock and the submersible test stand barge was moved to a position aft of the submarine (both had previously been in their former positions since December 9, 2016). Since the July report, netting or tarps have been suspended above both the fore and aft decks of the submarine obscuring any activity taking place beneath them. The only other time this was seen was during May-July 2016 and prior to the failed July 9, 2016 Pukguksong-1 test. It is unclear if this activity is signaling a forthcoming at sea SLBM test, although the recent ejection tests would support such an assessment. No activity is noted on or near the submersible test stand barge in the latest image.
Continues.

Powerful Venezuelan lawmaker may have issued death order against Rubio
[MIAMIHERALD] One of Venezuela’s most powerful leaders may have put out an order to kill Florida Sen. Marco Rubio
The diminutive 13-year-old Republican U.S. Senator from Florida...
, a fervent critic of the South American country’s government, according to intelligence obtained by the U.S. last month.

Though federal authorities couldn’t be sure at the time if the uncorroborated threat was real, they took it seriously enough that Rubio has been guarded by a security detail for several weeks in both Washington and Miami.

Believed to be behind the order: Diosdado Cabello, the influential former military chief and politician from the ruling socialist party who has publicly feuded with Rubio.

At a July 19 Senate hearing, the same day he was first spotted with more security, Rubio repeated his line that Cabello -- who has long been suspected by U.S. authorities of drug trafficking -- is "the Pablo Escobar of Venezuela." A week ago on Twitter, Cabello dubbed the senator "Narco Rubio."

Egypt's investment minister inspects development projects in North Sinai
Carrots for the residents against the military stick for ISIS in the Sinai.
[AlAhram] Egypt's Investment and International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr followed up on the implementation of development projects in North Sinai by the Armed Forces, stressing that "developing Sinai is key to eliminating terrorism."

The Sinai Development Programme includes 12 financing agreements with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) as well as other financing agreements with Arab funds including the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development, which is contributing to Sinai development with approximately $900 million, according to a statement on the ministry's website.

The programme includes establishing six water desalination plants and connecting electricity to 26 Bedouin areas.

The minister hailed the rate of progress of implementing the projects, saying that "the president instructed the government to quickly complete development projects in Sinai given their role in providing services to citizens, such as providing youth and women with job opportunities and raising the standards of living."

Nasr stressed her keenness on supporting women, emphasising that priority has been given to grants targeting the most vulnerable groups, noting that she is interested in supporting Bedouin women given their role in raising future generations.

During her visit to North Sinai, the minister checked the establishment of development zones at the El-Nathila 1 and El-Nathila 2 areas in El-Nakhl City, financed by the SFD with $340 million.

The El-Nathila 1 project, which is 30 percent complete, involves developing an agricultural area of over 1,000 feddans.

Al-Nathila 2, which is 65 percent complete, involves developing an agricultural area of over 100 feddans.
The feddan is a measure of land area equal to 1.038 acres (0.42 hectares). It is still used in Egypt after the change to the metric system, as well as in Syria, Sudan and Oman. One feddan is supposed to be the amount of land an Arabic-speaking yoke of oxen can plow in a certain amount of time.
Both al-Nathila complexes include a residential area with 105 homes for local Bedouins over 175 square metres, a Diwan, a mosque, an elementary school, a health unit, a sports arena, and a shopping complex.

The minister also inspected the development zone at Taweel El-Hamed in El-Nakhl City, where the development of agricultural land is 85 percent complete.

She also inspected the development zone at Abu Rusasa Village, which has 50 feddans agricultural of land as well as two schools for basic education that include 11 classrooms divided into two kindergarten classes, six classes for the elementary stage and three for the preparatory stage.

The latter project will be implemented by Egypt's Armed Forces, North Sinai governorate, and the Sinai Development Agency in coordination with the General Authority for Educational Building.

Nasr also inspected the establishment of two schools at El-Swan and Wadi El-Haj villages, as well as the Taba Tunnel Road Development Project, which is financed by the SFD with $280 million and aims to serve the new residential areas east of the Suez Canal. The project is 34 percent complete.

India-Pakistan
The political face of JuD
[DAWN] THE Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) has transformed its political wing into a political party, so the latter is not entirely new. Long-established but informal and not involved in electoral politics, the political wing of the under-watch murderous Moslem group has been reincarnated as a political party, the Milli Moslem League (MML), whose registration with the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) is under process.

The move comes at a time when the country is heading towards a new election amidst political turbulence. Some political analysts see in it an attempt by certain establishment quarters to unite and launch a far-right political alliance to curtail the growing anti-establishment sentiments in mainstream politics. They believe the establishment is dry-cleaning its assets to launch them as part of thon the lamr electoral alliance, which could include groups and parties that were part of the Difa-e-Pakistain Council. This was formed to campaign for the severing of ties with the US and to reject the government’s decision to grant India the status of Most Favoured Nation.

The Grand Turk
Dark Spring
[Hurriyet Daily News] The so-called Arab Spring came to an end wherever it assumed to take place. It ended in Egypt with a military coup and drove Libya into a bloody chaos. Tunisia is presented as the only success story, but in fact it is far from having a happy ending but rather had a forced consensus. Last but not least, the debacle of Syria displays the dark side of the so-called "spring."

That’s not to say that the above mentioned countries have had agreeable regimes and that they did not have considerable opposition. The point is that the popular movements which have been branded as democratic revolts had nothing to do with democratic struggles - with the exception of the existence of a handful number of democrats who supported them. The Islamist takeover in Egypt was not a surprise, since the pillar of the anti-government movement was the Moslem Brüderbund. It is no surprise that it led to civil war between Islamist militias in Libya, since the regime was displaced by foreign intervention in the absence of a democratic opposition. Even in Tunisia, the strongest opposition has been the so-called "good Islamists" under the leadership of Rached Ghannouchi, who is no more than an advocate of "Islamic democracy." Finally, even he had to be pressured to compromise in order to avoid social unrest, and his only wisdom had been to surrender to domestic and foreign pressures.

Despite that the Syrian spring was assumed to have started with peaceful democratic opposition against the regime, it is no surprise that it turned into a civil war, since the tiny democratic opposition objected to the armed struggle from the beginning. Nevertheless, the international community turned a blind eye to those who advocated peaceful transition and instead supported gangs against the regime. Nobody wanted to inquire the true identity of those gunnies who started fierce war against Bashir al-Assad’s regime, since they were assumed "to wage a just war against a brutal dictatorship." It was not questioned on how they obtained weapons and the financial and logistic support. Finally, it became clear that it indeed is a proxy war between regional and international powers, between those who support the regime and others who are determined to realize a regime change.

#3  The underlying assumption that democracy is natural and exportable has been buried. However, Neocons and Lefties never reevaluate their failures as much as double down on the concept of 'if only the right people were in charge'. Man is hierarchical, territorial, and tribal. Democracy is antithetical to that and requires just the right conditions and protections to exist against that kind of human behavior. First in Muslim world, Tunisian president seeks equal inheritance for women
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] In a speech on the occasion of the National Women’s Day, the Tunisian President announced the formation of a committee to study the issue of individual rights and to activate them further and to consider equality between men and women in all fields.

Despite the wide rights of women in Tunisia compared to other Moslem countries, however, arbitration in inheritance is still based on the Sharia or Islamic law, where the man’s share equals to that of two women.

President Beji Caed Essibsi stressed that equality between men and women, which was approved by the Tunisian constitution, should cover all areas, including equality in inheritance. "If we think about harmony, because the constitution dictates this, we must go in this direction."

OPINION: How did the women of Tunisia defeat murderous Moslems?

He said that inheritance is not a religious matter, but rather a matter for human beings. "God and His Messenger have left the matter for human beings to act," he said.

The President also called on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice to review and change publication No. 73, which prohibits Tunisian woman from marrying a foreigner if his Islamic faith is not recognized by the Mufti, adding that the Tunisian Constitution recognizes freedom of belief and freedom of conscience in its sixth chapter and holds the state responsible for ensuring the protection of these freedoms.

Egyptian police kill two Hasm militants in Qalioubiya raid: Ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed two members of the Hasm myrmidon group in a shootout in Qalioubiya governorate, a statement by the interior ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry said the two suspects, identified as Mohammed Mekki and Mohammed Moftah, shot at police as they tried to apprehend them at their hideout.

The men were involved in assassinating a National Security officer in July, according to the ministry.

One of the murderous Moslems was previously sentenced in several terrorism-related cases and received a 15-year prison sentence.

Hasm has grabbed credit for a number of attacks against Egyptian security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.

Egyptian security forces have tossed in the slammer

Egyptian officials have said that that the group is linked to the banned Moslem Brüderbund group.

Peshawar school head denied bail in abuse case
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: A local court on Saturday dismissed the bail petition of a private school’s principal tossed in the clink
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
on the charge of sexually abusing several women and blackmailing them by making their objectionable videos.

Additional district and sessions judge Hayat Gul Mohmand pronounced that keeping in view the evidence on record, the petitioner and accused, Attaullah Marwat, didn’t deserve to be freed on bail.

The accused, who is also the owner of the school, was arrested after a case was registered against him on July 14, 2017, at the Hayatabad cop shoppe on the complaint of a male student, who had claimed the accused had sexually exploited students and teachers and making their objectionable videos by installing secret cameras in different parts of the school.

The accused had recorded a statement with a magistrate on July 19 confessing to have sexually abused several women and making their objectionable videos on the premises.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
he had denied having sexually abused any of his students. The petitioner’s lawyer contended that none of the alleged victims had deposed against the petitioner and that the entire case was based on hearsay.

The state prosecutor contended that a student of the school had informed the police about the misdeeds of the petitioner. He added that the said student had told the police that the petitioner was involved in exploitation of students and teachers.

The complainant had told the police that the petitioner had sexually exploited students, teachers and outsider women, but none of them disclosed that fearing backlash from him.

All previous attempts to drive President Trump out of office have failed, so everyone is transferring their energy to the latest thing, I suspect. Habit extinction burst, "a predictable and common blast of defiance from the recesses of a brain denied familiar rewards."

Here is some great advice from Canine University magazine: “The worst thing you could ever do is give in to a temper tantrum. This goes for adults too, because if you spend enough time observing other people you will notice that people who are used to getting their way will start a temper tantrum immediately after you have refused their request. If you patiently restate your position and stay calm you will see the person eventually give up. Depending upon how long he carries on will tell you how other people have responded to the person in the past. If he has been rewarded for having a fit often enough the extinction burst will be spectacular, enjoy! If it’s short lived, it will be over as quick as it started and you can feel good that you haven’t encouraged it. The best way to eliminate a tantrum is to not give in, wait out the extinction burst (walking away works wonders) and reinforce the absence of the tantrum with your attention as soon as the person stops.”

Syria investigator del Ponte says enough evidence to convict Assad of war crimes
[Hurriyet Daily News] The U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Syria has gathered enough evidence for Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
to be convicted of war crimes, a prominent member of the commission, Carla del Ponte, said in remarks published on Aug. 13. Del Ponte, 70, who prosecuted war crimes in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia, announced last week that she was stepping down from her role in frustration at the U.N. Security Council’s failure to continue the commission’s work by setting up a special tribunal for Syria that could try alleged war criminals.

She has not said when she will leave her post.

Asked in an interview with Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung whether there was enough evidence for Assad to be convicted of war crimes, she said: "Yes, I am convinced that is the case. That is why the situation is so frustrating. The preparatory work has been done. Despite that, there is no prosecutor and no court."

The Syrian government led by Assad denies reports by the commission documenting widespread war crimes committed by government-backed forces and Syria’s security services.

Del Ponte, a former Swiss attorney general, joined the three-member Syria inquiry in September 2012, chronicling incidents such as chemical weapons attacks, a genocide against Iraq’s Yazidi population, siege tactics, and the bombing of aid convoys.

The commission was set up in August 2011 and has regularly reported on human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
violations, but its pleas to observe international law have largely fallen on deaf ears.

Although the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
is setting up a new body to prepare prosecutions, there is no sign of any court being established to try war crimes committed in the six-and-a-half year-old war. Nor is there any intention by the U.N. Security Council to refer the situation to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

"For six years, the commission has investigated. Now a prosecutor should continue our work and bring the war criminals before a special court. But that is exactly what Russia is blocking with its veto in the U.N. Security Council," del Ponte was quoted as saying.

Russia, a close ally of Assad’s government, has a veto on the Security Council as one of its five permanent members.

Asked which of the parties to the conflict the commission had primarily investigated, she said: "They all committed war crimes. Therefore we investigated all of them."

Britain
Britain will face radical Islamist threat for decades to come, says ex-MI5 boss
[RT] Former MI5 chief Lord Evans has warned that the Islamist threat to the UK is likely to continue for the next “20 to 30 years.”

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, the former director of Britain’s Security Service (MI5) said the issue of Islamist terrorism is a “generational problem” and that the UK must “persevere” to defeat it comprehensively.

Evans, who resigned as the head of MI5 in 2013, warned the threat posed by radical Islamists is unlikely to subside due to the rise of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

“There’s no doubt that we are still facing a severe terrorist threat but I think it’s also important to put this in a slightly longer context because right the way back from the 1990s we have been experiencing difficulties from Islamist terrorists of one sort or another.

“Over that period the threat has come and gone but the underlying threat has continued.

“Since 2013 there have been 19 attempted attacks that have been disrupted and even since the attack at Westminster [in March] we are told there have been six disruptions, so this is a permanent state of preparedness.

“We’re at least 20 years into this. My guess is that we will still be dealing with the long tail in over 20 years’ time,” Evans added.

“I think this is genuinely a generational problem. I think we are going to be facing 20 to 30 years of terrorist threat and therefore we need, absolutely critically, to persevere.”

Cops shoot, arrest Palestinian suspected of planning attack in Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Shin Bet reportedly had intelligence warning about suspect; local residents insist he is a sick man who poses no threat

Police shot and tossed in the clink
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
a Paleostinian man suspected of planning to carry out a terror attack in Jerusalem on Sunday, officials said.

The Shin Bet security service said it received intelligence that the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was on his way to conduct an attack.

Some local residents of the Beit Safafa neighborhood in East Jerusalem, bordering the street in the Pat neighborhood where the man was arrested, disputed the statement, saying he was a sick man and posed no danger.

During the arrest, officers said they felt they were in danger and shot the man in the thigh, police said in a statement.

The suspect was taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center in moderate condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

Neither police nor the Shin Bet would specify what type of attack the man was suspected of planning. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
pictures from the scene showed officers tackling the suspect to the ground on Berl Locker Street in the south of the city, something they would not likely do if the man was suspected of carrying explosives.

According to Channel 2 news, the suspect was approximately 50 years old. An eyewitness told the television channel that the man had a pacemaker installed recently and was released from the hospital earlier in the day on Sunday.

The Beit Safafa incident came a day after a man was lightly injured in a Jerusalem stabbing attack.

And more on this story from yesterday:
On Saturday afternoon, a female Paleostinian assailant tried to stab an ultra-Orthodox man and, failing to do that, stabbed another person, reportedly an East Jerusalem resident, injuring him lightly, according to security footage released by police.

In the clip, the attacker, a 29-year-old mother of five from East Jerusalem, can be seen crossing a street before pulling out a knife and taking a few swipes at the ultra-Orthodox man, who dodges the weapon and manages to get away. The footage does not show the stabbing of the victim, who according to some reports in the Hebrew-language media was a resident of East Jerusalem wearing a shirt with Hebrew writing, whom she mistook for a Jew.

The man, who was lightly maimed in the arm as a result of the attack, was taken to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus for treatment before being released.

Police said the attacker was overpowered and arrested by coppers at the scene after stabbing the man. She was then taken for questioning.

Hebrew-language media reported that the woman’s husband was arrested following the attack and that police raided the couple’s home in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Baher.

At least 17 killed in attack on restaurant in Burkina Faso
[IsraelTimes] Suspected Islamic gunnies open fire on Ottoman Turkish eatery popular with foreigners in capital of Ouagadougou

Suspected Islamic gunnies shot up a Ottoman Turkish restaurant late Sunday in the capital of Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, killing at least 17 people in the second such attack on a restaurant popular with foreigners in the last two years.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence, which continued into the early hours Monday with yet another heavy exchange of gunfire overheard by witnesses.

Communication Minister Remi Dandjinou told journalists that at least 17 people were dead and eight others maimed, according to a provisional toll. The victims came from several different nationalities, he said. Among the dead was at least one French national.

Security forces arrived at the scene with armored vehicles after reports of shots fired near Aziz Istanbul, an upscale restaurant in Ouagadougou. The attack brought back painful memories of the January 2016 attack at another cafe that left 30 people dead.

Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation in West Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world. It shares a northern border with Mali, which has long battled Islamic holy warriors.

The three attackers in the 2016 massacre were of foreign origin, according to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which grabbed credit in the aftermath along with the jihadist group known as Al Mourabitoun. But the terror threat in Burkina Faso is increasingly homegrown, experts say.

The northern border region is now the home of a local preacher, Ibrahim Malam Dicko, who radicalized and has claimed recent deadly attacks against troops and civilians. His association, Ansarul Islam, is now considered a terrorist group by Burkina Faso’s government.
So at this point it's probably either Al Qaeda in the Maghreb or Ansar ul Islam... or Ansar ul Islam has sworn alleigiance to either ISIS or AQIM. Hopefully the day will bring further information. An earlier Times of Israel article adds:
Witnesses said that three gunnies arrived in a 4×4 at around 9:30 pm and opened fire on customers seated outside the cafe.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Police front man Capt. Guy Ye told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named the target of the attack was a Ottoman Turkish restaurant known as Aziz Istanbul.
Update at 1:00 p.m. EDT:
Searches continue after suspected jihadists kill 18 in Burkina Faso

[IsraelTimes] Security forces kill 2 gunmen behind deadly assault on Turkish restaurant in Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou.

Security forces in Burkina Faso’s capital ended an assault Monday against suspected jihadists who opened fire on a restaurant in a “terrorist attack” that left at least 18 people dead, the government said.

The attack that began Sunday night in a Turkish restaurant popular with foreigners also left a dozen people injured, while two assailants were later killed, Communications Minister Remis Dandjinou said. It was not clear how many gunmen were involved.

“The operation has ended” but searches are continuing in the Ouagadougou neighborhood around the restaurant, Dandjinou told a press briefing carried on social media.

The Istanbul restaurant is just 200 meters from a hotel and cafe targeted in an assault in January 2016 that left 30 people dead and 71 wounded, many of them foreigners. That attack was claimed by the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) group.

“According to witnesses, at least two assailants arrived on a motorcycle around 9 p.m. armed with Kalashnikovs, opened fire on the Istanbul restaurant,” a police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.

A waiter in the restaurant said he saw “three men arrive on a 4X4 vehicle around 9:30 p.m., get off the vehicle and open fire on customers seated on the terrace.”

Shooting ended around 5 a.m., according to an AFP journalist who was near the restaurant.

The prosecutors’ anti-terrorism unit has opened an investigation, they said.

Dandjinou had earlier said that "some people were held" by the assailants and that "some were released," but gave no further details.

He said the 18 victims were of various nationalities, both Burkinabes and foreigners.

Security forces launched a counter-assault at around 10:15 p.m. against the assailants who were hiding in the building, the police officer said.
And from the Toronto Star:
Local authorities say foreigners killed include two Canadians, two Kuwaitis and one person each from La Belle France, Senegal

Navy accused of removing attorneys to scuttle SEAL's appeal
The Obama-Rot starts at the top but has set in
[SanDiegoUnionTribune] A day after Navy Vice Adm. James Crawford III was grilled about his alleged role in scuttling the defense of a Navy SEAL accused of rape, attorneys under his command maneuvered to fire the bulk of the legal team asking the questions.

In a series of motions and responses filed between Aug. 1 and Friday with a special armed forces court in Washington, D.C., the Navy’s attorneys seek to remove three military lawyers assigned to assist the appeal of Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Keith Barry.

Barry was convicted in 2015 of raping a woman in San Diego. The military judge was faced with deciding whether he secured consent from the female victim during a month-long relationship between 2012 and 2013.

He maintained his innocence even after he was sentenced to prison and given a dishonorable discharge, claiming that she was using the criminal justice system to punish him for ending their relationship.

Seeking clemency, he appealed the military judge’s decision to Rear Adm. Patrick Lorge, the commander of Navy Region Southwest who is now retired. In a sworn affidavit, Lorge admitted that he did not believe Barry was guilty but instead of vacating the verdict took advice from Crawford to let it stand.

Crawford urged him to appease Capitol Hill and White House critics unhappy with the military’s handling of sexual assault cases and warned that going soft on Barry could end Lorge’s Navy career, the retired flag officer wrote in his statement.

Lorge’s words were echoed by a pair of sworn affidavits from junior legal aides who recalled him discussing Crawford’s advice.

"The Barry case has been forwarded to a new convening authority, senior to the original convening authority, and the fact-finding process is underway," said Patricia Babb, spokeswoman for the Office of the Judge Advocate General, in an email to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

German NGO halts migrant rescue operations off Libya
[Hurriyet Daily News] The German aid group Sea Eye on Aug. 13 said it was suspending its migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean, citing security concerns after Libya barred foreign vessels from a stretch of water off its coast.

The announcement comes a day after Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said it was halting the use of its largest boat in the area because of an "increasingly hostile environment for lifesaving rescue operations."

In a statement, Sea Eye said it was with "a heavy heart" that it had decided to follow suit following the Libyan government’s "explicit threat against the private NGOs."

Tensions have been on the rise since the Libyan navy on Aug. 10 ordered foreign vessels to stay out of a coastal search and rescue zone, a measure it said was specifically aimed at non-governmental groups.

Erdogan implies main opposition CHP leader's involvement in espionage case
[Hurriyet Daily News] President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
has implied that an ongoing probe into espionage and the leaking of secret state documents to media outlets can also reach main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, as one of his deputies is already behind bars in the same case.

"The leader of the main opposition is obviously trying to muddy the waters over concerns that charges which led to the imprisonment of one of his politicians may reach him as well. Don’t get surprised if Kilicdaroglu’s link on the issue related to the incarcerated

politician is revealed," Erdogan said at a Justice and Development Party (AKP) meeting in the southern province of Antalya on Aug. 13.

"I hear different news coming from prison. ’I will speak if I am not freed,’ the imprisoned person says," Erdogan added, referring to CHP Istanbul Deputy Enis Berberoglu, who has been in jail since mid-June.

Berberoglu was sentenced to 25 years for leaking confidential state documents to the media that allegedly revealed the National Intelligence Organization’s (MIT) shipment of weapons to groups fighting in Syria.

Some pro-government media outlets reported that Kilicdaroglu provided the documents to Berberoglu after obtaining them from members of the Gulen network.

Kilicdaroglu launched a historic "justice march" from Ankara to Istanbul after Berberoglu’s arrest in a bid to stress on growing judicial problems in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
. But for Erdogan, the march was solely an action taken by Kilicdaroglu to create a mess in the country. "His purpose was nothing to do with justice but to create a mess," he said.

Indian Court Sentences Somali Pirates To Seven Years In Jail
[RADIOSHABELLE] The Mumbai sessions court on Friday convicted 26 Somalian pirates to seven years in prison in connection with a 2011 merchant ship attack case.

Initially, there were 28 accused in the case. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
during the trial that lasted six long years, one of the accused died in a Mumbai jail.

Another accused named Atoor Bashir Barare, who was lodged at the Talika jail with others, was rushed to the hospital after he complained of dizziness.

Special Public Prosecutor Ranjeet Sangale told the court that he was being given oxygen and was responding well to treatment.

Appearing for the pirates, advocate Vishwajeet Singh told the court that the jail authorities should be directed to send the accused who were not feeling well to the hospital immediately.

"They keep waiting until the patients’ condition gets serious. That’s how we have lost two people in the case. Many of the accused are suffering from diabetes and tuberculosis."

There were, overall, 120 accused tossed in the calaboose

between January and March 2011 for attacking merchant vessels, and hijacking and looting them.
This is the third case in which the court pronounced its ruling.

The court has already convicted more than 30 pirates in two different judgments.

In this particular case on February 5, 2011, Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samar was patrolling around Lakshwadeep when it got information about a merchant ship Chois of Greek nationality being attacked by pirates.

The naval ship diverted towards the location where the attack was underway and reached there on February 6.

The Coast Guard ship saw that the piracy vessel had no lights and they were not moving anywhere.

Over the radio, they asked the pirate mother vessel to surrender. Apart from Samar, there was another Indian naval ship ’Tir’ in the area and a dinner aircraft was also called in to help.

The aircraft located that there was another vessel Prantalaya ‐ 11 from Thailand had been hijacked by the pirates. The pirates also fired at the Indian ship following which the Coast Guard ship had to open retaliatory fire.

After sustained fireworks from both sides that included rockets being launched by Indian ships, the pirates finally started throwing their weapons into the sea and showed white flags to surrender.

Commandos kill 25 jihadists in central Syria
Adventures in the northeast of Homs province.
[Hurriyet Daily News] A commando operation backed by Russian warplanes and helicopters has killed 25 members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in central Syria, a monitor said on Aug. 13.

Supported by regime ally Russia, Syria’s army has waged a months-long offensive to recapture the vast desert region that stretches from the country’s center to the Iraqi and Jordanian borders.

On Aug. 12, "25 ISIS members were killed and others maimed in a commando operation by Syrian regime forces with air support from Russian warplanes and helicopters" in the northeast of Homs province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

Six members of the regime forces were also killed, it said.

A military source said the operation occurred "20 kilometers inside ISIS [ISIS] terrorist lines".

The raid allowed regime forces to seize control of three villages in the area, official news agency SANA reported the source as saying.

The army has captured swathes of territory from the jihadists in the province. According to the Observatory, ISIS now controls just dozens of villages in the east of Homs.

The Syrian "Badiya" is a large stretch of desert that extends over around 90,000 square kilometers of territory.

Since 2015, much of the Badiya has been held by IS, but Syria’s army has been chipping away at it since May.

Last week, the Observatory said regime forces had ousted ISIS from al-Sukhna, the last jihadist-held town in Homs province.

Syria’s army and Russia this weekend confirmed its full recapture.

"The liberation of al-Sukhna from ISIS turbans opens up possibilities for Syrian government forces to launch an assault and free the city of Deir Ezzor," a Russian army statement said.

The jihadists hold the majority of the vast desert province of Deir Ezzor including most of its picturesque provincial capital.

The recapture of Deir Ezzor "would largely -- if not completely -- mark the end of the fight against ISIS," Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Aug. 13 told the Russia 24 television channel.

Regime forces have more than doubled the territory they control in Syria over the past two months, he said.

Forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

are also fighting the jihadists in the south of neighboring Raqqa province.

A U.S.-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance meanwhile is battling to retake the picturesque provincial capital, Raqqa city, from ISIS.

Syrian Army bulls through ISIL’s defenses in east Hama, liberates several points

(ISIS) gunnies clinging onto the eastern countryside of Hama.

Backed by heavy Russian Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s Qalamoun Shield unit of the 3rd Division attacked the Islamic State’s positions near the town of Salba, scoring a new advance after an intense battle this afternoon.

According to a government source in Salamiyah City, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies seized several points, including the large hilltop of Tal Hikmat, from the Islamic State Death Eaters, killing and wounding scores of gunnies in the process.

The Syrian military is now gearing up for a major assault on the strategic town of ’Uqayrbat, which is considered the Islamic State’s last stronghold in central Syria.

Iran boosts budget for missiles, Revolutionary Guards
[Al Jazeera] Iran's parliament has overwhelmingly voted to increase spending on Tehran's ballistic missile programme and the elite Revolutionary Guards in retaliation for new sanctions imposed by the United States.

In a session on Sunday, a total of 240 politicians out of 244 present voted to allocate $520m to develop the country's missile programme and boost foreign operations of the paramilitary troops, with only one abstention.

Parliamentarians approved the outlines of the bill to "counter America's terrorist and adventurist actions in the region" as some chanted "Death to America" after the vote results were announced.

A communique by the ISF Directorate General said it foiled the attack on 7/8/2017 at 16.45 pm and that the suicide kaboomer had planned to execute his mission during the afternoon prayers.

In details, ISF police apprehended a Lebanese national who was identified by the initials R.K, (born in 2003), as he was trying to enter the mosque. After searching him, two hand grenades were found inside his bag.

The detainee was referred to the Information branch for interrogation, and he admitted his affiliation to the terrorist IS organization.

He confessed he was planning to enter the Grand Mansouri Mosque during the afternoon prayers and toss the two hand grenades at worshippers. He also planned to snatch a gun from one of the police on guard and open fire at worshippers.
