Sorry to hear that you raped those two Swedish girls, pervert. Oh, and there is an espionage thing too? Oh, bad. Perverts do as perverts are, ya know.

Waverider fails
LOS ANGELES — An unmanned experimental aircraft failed during an attempt to fly at six times the speed of sound in the latest setback for hypersonic flight. The X-51A Waverider was designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber off the Southern California coast on Tuesday. Engineers hoped it would sustain its top speed for five minutes, twice as long as an X-51A has gone before.

But the Air Force said Wednesday that a faulty control fin prevented it from starting its exotic scramjet engine and it was lost. The Waverider successfully detached from the B-52 and fired the rocket booster as planned. Then its scramjet engine was supposed to take over as it attempted to climb to Mach 6, but that never happened. Fifteen seconds after separating from the rocket booster, the Waverider lost control, preventing a test of the scramjet engine.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Bomb blast rocks Damascus
DAMASCUS: A massive bomb attack and a firefight shook Damascus on Wednesday. The rebel Free Syrian Army claimed the bomb attack targeted a military headquarters near a hotel used by UN observers as a warning to President Bashar Assad that it could strike anytime at the very heart of the regime.

A gunbattle also erupted between rebels and troops near the offices of new Prime Minister Wael Al-Halqi, who took office after his predecessor defected last week, and a new Iranian embassy building that is still under construction.

“There was a huge explosion and a fireball, and soldiers were thrown to the ground by the blast,” a military officer told AFP at the scene, adding that five people suffered burns or shrapnel wounds. No UN staff member was hurt.

-Election 2012
Romney comes out fighting
Mitt Romney used a tough new campaign speech to personally blast the Obama campaign on Tuesday, saying comments earlier in the day from Vice President Biden are "what an angry and desperate presidency looks like."

"Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago," Romney said while campaigning in Ohio.

Romney was responding to Biden's suggestion that the GOP ticket's economic policies would "put y'all back in chains."

The gibbering vice president made the remark while campaigning in what he thought was North Carolina Virginia, during a discussion of Wall Street regulation.

"They've said it. Every Republican's voted for it. Look at what they value and look at their budget and what they're proposing. Romney wants to let the -- he said in the first 100 days, he's going to let the big banks once again write their own rules -- unchain Wall Street," Biden said. "They're going to put y'all back in chains. He's said he's going to do nothing about stopping the practice of outsourcing."
Nice to see him calling a race baiter a race baiter.

Former Obama campaign co-chair to stump for Romney
A former four-term Democratic congressman from Alabama and one time strong supporter of President Barack Obama will campaign for Mitt Romney Wednesday.

A Romney campaign aide confirms to CNN that Artur Davis will stump for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in the battleground state of Virginia.

Davis, who is black, may be best known for seconding Obama's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, when he served as an Obama campaign co-chairman. Davis said he had hoped Obama's presidency would make a huge dent in race relations, as well as move the Democratic Party further to the center.

In 2010, Davis made an unsuccessful bid for governor of Alabama. In May he announced he was switching to the GOP, leaving the door open to a future political bid as a Republican.

Davis said in June that he thinks his one time political party was becoming more unwelcoming towards Southern conservative Democrats.

"I think the Obama administration has candidly gone too far to the left. You can raise all kinds of questions on whether that's good politics or not," Davis said on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." "Obviously the election will determine that."
I'm glad the scales have fallen from his eyes. Welcome aboard!
He's welcome in the Republican party. Don't know the politics of Alabama but he could certainly serve in a Romney administration.

ICE Chief Of Staff On Leave After New Allegations Of Lewd Conduct Surface
[Fox News] The top Homeland Security official accused of cultivating a "frat-house"-style work environment has "voluntarily placed herself on leave" amid an internal review, the department told FoxNews.com late Tuesday evening -- just hours after FoxNews.com contacted the agency about new allegations against her.

The official, Suzanne Barr, is chief of staff for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Two more ICE employees came forward this week to complain about "lewd" conduct inside the agency, submitting sworn affidavits that depict graphic comments made by two brass hats working under DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The affidavits were given as part of a discrimination and retaliation suit filed earlier this year by James T. Hayes Jr.,the head of the New York office for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

#10  Demo logic:

Show ID to vote = bad
Show ID to buy cold medicine = no problem

BTW. There was a Utah case a few years back where SCOTUS held that it was permissible for the police to ask a citizen for an ID (I think the term the court used was "Ausweiss") when there was no crime committed or probable cause. They ask for your papers, you must provide them. Hard to reconcile that logic with the opposition to voter ID.

Hungary Far-Right Leader Discovers Jewish Roots
As a rising star in Hungary's far-right Jobbik Party, Csanad Szegedi was notorious for his incendiary comments on Jews: He accused them of "buying up" the country, railed about the "Jewishness" of the political elite and claimed Jews were desecrating national symbols.

Then came a revelation that knocked him off his perch as ultra-nationalist standard-bearer: Szegedi himself is a Jew.

Following weeks of Internet rumors, Szegedi acknowledged in June that his grandparents on his mother's side were Jews -- making him one too under Jewish law, even though he doesn't practice the faith.
Possibly. If neither his grandmother or his mother converted before the next generation was born, and if he never converted to another religion.
His grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor and his grandfather a veteran of forced labor camps.

Since then, the 30-year-old has become a pariah in Jobbik and his political career is on the brink of collapse. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Gaza residents 'stranded abroad' as Egypt denies visas
[Ma'an] A number of Paleostinians say they are stranded abroad because Egypt has denied them transit visas to return to Gazoo.

Paleostinians in Leb, Turkey, Libya and Kenya have contacted Ma'an, saying they were refused Egyptian visas.

Gazoo residents can only enter or leave the enclave via the Rafah crossing on Egypt's border due to Israel's blockade of Gazoo's other borders and sea port.

Salim, who is in Istanbul, told Ma'an the Egyptian consulate said it had been instructed by the Egyptian government to stop issuing visas to Paleostinians.

Another Paleostinian, who asked not to be identified but is also in Istanbul, said an employee of the Egyptian consulate told him he would not be given a visa "because the Paleostinians killed Egyptian soldiers in Sinai."

A Paleostinian in Algeria told Ma'an he had booked a flight to Cairo but was told he could not board the flight. The airline also refused to postpone his ticket, he added.

Paleostinians have reported problems returning to Gazoo via Egypt since gunnies killed 16 Egyptian officers near the Gazoo border on Aug. 5. Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, has denied speculation that snuffies from Gazoo were involved in the attack.

Egypt swiftly closed the Rafah crossing, briefly reopening it in one direction on Friday.

The Paleostinian director of the border crossing told Ma'an on Friday that the terminal would reopen in both directions Tuesday for three days, mainly to permit travel for humanitarian cases such as Paleostinians seeking medical care abroad, and students.

Hamas believed Moslem Brüderbund President Muhammad Mursi would usher in a new period of harmony between Gazoo and Cairo, but that has yet to materialize because of strategic considerations involving Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel and related military aid from the United States.

"We suffered from the unjust regime of Mubarak that participated in the (Israeli) blockade of Gazoo. Why should we suffer now in the era of Egypt's revolution and democracy?" said Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hammad.

"The Egyptian leadership is requested to order the reopening of the Rafah crossing to alleviate the suffering of Paleostinians wanting to travel, students, patients, residents in third countries and pilgrims," he said in a statement.

"If Paleostine was not a top priority for you, you should change direction," Hammad added in an unusually sharp rebuke.

#11  The Battle of Athens (sometimes called the McMinn County War) was a rebellion led by citizens in Athens and Etowah, Tennessee, United States, against the local government in August 1946. The citizens, including some World War II veterans, accused the local officials of political corruption and voter intimidation. The event is sometimes cited by firearms ownership advocates as an example of the value of the Second Amendment in combating tyranny.

Gen. Dempsey: Israel incapable of destroying Iran's atom program
US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey postulated that an Israeli strike would not annihilate Iran's nuclear program.

"(...) I want to make clear, I'm not privy to their planning," he said. "So what I'm telling you is based on what I know of their capabilities. And I may not know about all of their capabilities. But I think that it's a fair characterization to say that they could delay but not destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities."
I cannot think of a single reason this might have been thought a good idea to say aloud in public.

As long as they point smart people and loads of cash at making nuclear weapons, there will always be an Iranian nuclear program. Of course, there's something to be said for delaying it with periodic bombing raids, a la Iraq's no-fly zone. Heck - we could even systematically wreck Iran's conventional capability via air raids, after dismantling its air force and air defenses.

It's kind of amusing in retrospect that one of Bush's justifications for the invasion of Iraq was the high cost of the no-fly zone, at $1.3b a year. Live and learn...

Egypt Sentences 14 Islamists to Hang for Sinai Attacks
[An Nahar] An Egyptian court sentenced 14 Islamists to death on Tuesday for the 2011 murder of seven people at a bank and a police post in the Sinai Peninsula, scene of mounting violence near the border with Israel.

The court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya convicted the 14 of carrying out the attacks in June and July last year on behalf of the hardline group Tawhid wal Jihad (Monotheism and Holy War).

One civilian was among the dead.

The verdict came amid a massive crackdown by the army on growing lawlessness in the Sinai since the overthrow of veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak

Team Obama confident Biden can take on Ryan
[The Hill] The Obama campaign said Tuesday it is confident Vice President Biden will be an effective foil against GOP vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan

despite his latest gaffe.

Biden on Tuesday made headlines when he told a crowd here that the GOP ticket's policies would put "y'all back in chains." The remark was about Wall Street regulations, but the Romney campaign seized on the imagery of slavery to say Biden and Obama had hit a new low.

The unscripted comments highlighted Biden's propensity for off-the-cuff statements --which at times have caused the White House embarrassment. But Biden aides say the occasional slip-ups are far outweighed by the positives that the vice president brings to the table.

"Vice President Biden has been the president's partner and top surrogate on the campaign trail and no one is fighting harder to ensure the president is reelected in November," a campaign official said. "He continues to travel across the country making the case for what's truly at stake in this election and why President B.O. is the right choice for middle class workers and their families."

Biden has hoof-in-mouth disease. Somehow his brain disengages before his mouth works. Guiliani said that Biden hasn't ever been bright enough to be President.

I was just looking as Facebook this a.m. Judging from the comments there are quite a few liberal young people (18-30) who still buy the whole Obama Team schtick of hope, change, lies and damned lies--they are still believing the B.S. If they vote, there is little doubt for whom they will vote. It was depressing to see the gullibility of this group of otherwise nice young people. Must be the Kool Aid.

#5  “He’d be tearing his hair out, if he didn’t have to be so careful of the follicles,” said one Democratic professional, speaking under condition of anonymity similar to that given GOP professionals who spoke earlier about Ryan in a Politico article by Alexander Burns, Maggie Haberman, and Jonathan Martin. Biden is known for having had hair transplants while Ryan has a full head of his own.

“They’re sending Joe to secret anger management training. He’s been going berserk because he’s worried people think Ryan is more intelligent than he is,” said another Democrat, again speaking under anonymity and reminding PJ Media of Biden’s unimpressive college record where he ranked 506th of in a class of 688. The vice president has acknowledged plagiarizing while in law school, though he says it was “inadvertent.”

Consideration was being given, the Democrat added, to Biden’s having a “family emergency” in Argentina at the time of his scheduled debate with Ryan.

#16  "Is it really in Hillary!s best interest to accept such a position? Would her chances of becoming president be better after an Obama or Romney presidency?"

I think the question should rather be: Are her chances better after an Obama presidency if she's the VP or if she's not.

If Obama wins it and she's not VP, she'll face fresh challengers. As a VP she'd be seen as the "natural" successor. She will use her 4 years to appear "presidential", but not be responsible for Obama's failures.

If Obama totally screws up in the first two years, she can still check out and present herself as the better alternative.

I don't buy into "Hillary is tired and has given up her ambitions".

Reports: Sayyed was in Samaha's Explosives-Laden Car
[An Nahar] Security forces are trying to verify unconfirmed reports that former General Security chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed was in the car with former minister Michel Samaha during the smuggling of the explosives from Syria to Leb, MTV quoted a security source as saying on Tuesday.

The source noted that "orders were given to let Samaha's car cross the border without any inspection."

Syrian security chief "Maj. Gen. Ali Mamlouk asked his friends in Leb to capture or kill the witness in Samaha's case," the alleged source claimed.

"What's important is Akkar. Focus your efforts on major rallies or Syrian opposition activists," MTV quoted Samaha as saying in one of the alleged audio recordings that security forces had managed to acquire.

Government deputy Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Sami Sader on Saturday charged Samaha and Mamlouk with forming a group to commit crimes in Leb. The two were also charged with plotting to assassinate political and religious figures.

Media leaks had said that Samaha was working at Syrian orders to prepare explosives to be used in attacks in northern Leb.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, a single surviver held tightly to the smashed prow...
LBCI television quoted a top Internal Security Forces officer as saying that "Milad Kfouri, the witness in ex-minister Michel Samaha's case, is a patriotic man and he and his family are under our protection."

The TV network also quoted a security source as saying that "the ISF are committed to providing monthly allowances to Kfouri and his family that do not exceed $10,000."

"The honoring of informant Milad Kfouri will not only be limited to the commendation he received from (ISF) Director General Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi, as he will also be decorated with a medal upon his return (to Leb) after the end of the case," the source added.

Afghanistan
Afghan meeting with jailed Taliban leader denied
[Dawn] The Afghan embassy in Islamabad on Tuesday denied reports that Afghan government representatives had met with a key Taliban capo imprisoned in Pakistain to discuss peace negotiations.

"No such meeting has taken place. We completely deny any meeting between Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Afghan officials," Zardasht Shams, front man for the Afghan embassy in Islamabad, told AFP.

A source close to Mullah Baradar's family told AFP that Afghan delegates were not given access to Baradar in jail but family members had passed him a message from the Afghan government on reconciliation.

Baradar, a powerful Taliban military chief who has been described as the turbans' second in command was tossed in the slammer
You have the right to remain silent...
in 2010 in Pakistain.

At the time, the Afghan government and the former UN envoy to Afghanistan said his detention had adversely affected efforts to talk to the cut-throats in a bid to end the decade-long Afghan war.

Mohammad Ismail Qasimyar, a member of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, on Monday said Afghan government officials and members of the Afghan embassy in Pakistain held secret talks with Baradar in prison two months ago.

A Pak security official confirmed Monday an official delegation from Afghanistan had made an initial contact with Baradar two months ago, but the Pak government later denied a meeting.

"The news reports about a meeting between Afghan officials and Mullah Baradar are baseless and incorrect," said the Pak interior ministry in a short statement issued late Monday.

President Karzai has long sought to negotiate with the Taliban but the militia has in public refused to deal with his administration, branding it an American puppet.

Official: Egypt forces detain 2, seize computer in Sinai
[Ma'an] Egyptian security officials say they seized documents detailing the names and operational information of snuffies in Sinai on Tuesday during a raid in Sheikh Zuwaid.

A security official told Ma'an that festivities erupted when the Egyptian army raided al-Goura village and a neighboring Bedouin camp, leading to a shootout in which one Egyptian soldier was injured.

Egyptian soldiers seized a computer containing data including the identities of "terrorists" working in the area and communication between them, he added.

Witnesses told Ma'an that an Apache helicopter escorted ground forces.

Late Monday, a group of gunnies shot up a checkpoint in el-Arish city, a security source said. No injuries were reported.

Pro-Saleh Troops Attack Yemen Defense Ministry
[An Nahar] Yemeni troops from the elite Republican Guard force, led by the son of ousted president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, attacked on Tuesday the headquarters of the defense ministry, witnesses said.

The forces laid siege to the ministry in Sanaa before attacking it with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades, witnesses told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The attack comes a week after new president Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi ordered a restructuring of army forces, reducing the number of units under the command of rival chiefs including Saleh's son.

The troops led by General Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh blocked the roads leading to the ministry in central Sanaa, said witnesses, who added that they had come from the main base of the Republican Guard in Sawad, south of the capital.

Other witnesses said that these forces exchanged fire with police on their way to the ministry.

Yemeni army reinforcements were deployed around the residence of Hadi, who replaced Saleh in an Gulf-brokered peace deal that ended 13 months of protests against the veteran leader, witnesses said.

Other reinforcements were stationed around the central bank where employees were evacuated, other witnesses said.

In a presidential decree last week, Hadi ordered the formation of a "presidential protection" force which will include three brigades from the Republican Guard.

The force will also include a brigade from the First Armored Division led by General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar who defected to the anti-Saleh opposition last year, official news agency Saba reported.

Hadi assigned other brigades from the two rival units to the central and southern regions, it added.

Under the terms of the peace agreement, Hadi is tasked with restructuring the military and security apparatus, which had been controlled by officials with close ties to Saleh and accused of corruption.

India-Pakistan
Police claim two more encounter scalps
[Dawn] The police claimed on Tuesday to have rubbed out two robbers in shootouts in different areas.

The Mughalpura police potted a 'robber' who allegedly raped a woman during a house strike at Mujahidabad three and a half months ago while the Gulshan Iqbal police shot down a robber who had injured a retired colonel on resistance on Monday.

Earlier, an alleged robber was killed by the Model Town CIA police at Old Kahna in the early hours of Monday.

Civil Lines SP (Operations) Abdul Qadir Qamar told Dawn that officials at a picket set up by the Mughalpura investigation in-charge signalled two motorcyclists to stop in the early hours. He said the suspects instead opened fire and the police chased and retaliated.

The SP said the suspects apparently escaped but an emergency call alerted the police that a man was lying injured on ground at Mujahidabad. He said the police rushed to the spot, picked up the man with multiple bullet wounds and took him to hospital but he died on the way.

SP Qamar said the victim was identified as Shahzad, 27, who hailed from Faisalabad.
...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. It is named after some Arab because Pakistain didn't have anybody notable to name it after...
He said Shahzad was the one who opened fire on the police and his accomplice managed to escape.

He said the suspects had come to threaten Muhammad Naseer at his house to withdraw the robbery-cum-rape case against them. He said Shahzad and Azam, who along with their three accomplices, had entered the house of Naseer on April 3 last, raped the complainant's daughter and daughter-in-law and fled with cash and valuables.

He said the police record also found that Shahzad was nominated in several cases of murder, dacoity and robbery in Faisalabad and his accomplice Azam was killed in a police encounter a couple of months ago.

Meanwhile,
...back at the fist fight, Jake ducked another roundhouse, then parried with his left, then with his right, finally with his chin...
the police shifted the body for an appointment with Dr. Quincy and started the paperwork but haven't done much else under 324, 353, 186 of PPC and 13/20/65 Arms Ordinance on the complaint of Inspector Muhammad Azam Manhais.

The Gulshan Iqbal police said a young robber was killed in crossfire with a team shortly after he and his accomplice attempted to loot cash and valuables from a retired army officer and his family and maimed him on resistance in Iqbal Town's Kamran Block.

Iqbal Town SP (Operations) Imtiaz Sarwar said Col Farooq (retired) went to his relative's house along with his family for Iftaar when two robbers stopped them and started looting jewellery from women.

As Farooq challenged them, one of the suspects fired at him. The firing also alerted neighbours who gathered on the spot.

Quoting witnesses, the SP said one of the suspects fled on the bike while the other having two weapons started running. The SP said a street guard opened fire on the runaway suspect who returned fire. On being informed, some coppers on patrol duty reached the spot and killed the gangster in crossfire.

Sarwar said the suspect had not yet been identified while the injured victim was admitted to the Jinnah Hospital.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
an alleged robber who was killed in a police shootout in Khana police precinct on Monday has not been identified. A Jinnah Hospital morgue official said the body was still lying for postmortem examination.

, where the army shelled several rebel-held areas, a rights watchdog said, after a bloody day in which 160 people were killed nationwide.

"Fighting broke out between government forces and rebel fighters in the (southwestern) districts of Saif al-Dawla and Salaheddin alongside kabooms in the area," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Salaheddin is controlled by regime forces, although there are pockets of rebel fighters, according to the Britannia-based watchdog.

A civilian was rubbed out by a sniper in Saif al-Dawla, the second rebel stronghold in the northern city, where the army advanced Monday with the help of tanks and armoured vehicles.

Government forces also pounded the rebel-held eastern districts of Sakhur, Hanano and Shaar, the Observatory said.

In the capital Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
, residents fled the central neighbourhood of Qaboon, fearing a major military onslaught, as security forces raided the districts of Midan in the south and Shaghur in the centre.

Government forces had launched a major sweep of the capital on Monday, including the historic Old City, arresting at least 22 people, according to the Observatory.

Outside the city, government forces shelled the suburbs of Qudsaya and Daraya, while elsewhere in the province of Damascus, a civilian and a defected soldier were killed in the town of Al-Tal.

The opposition Syrian National Council called attention to the situation in Al-Tal, describing it as a "disaster area" after five days of army shelling.

The Council urged "all capable citizens to come to the aid of the town with any means possible and to break the siege of the criminal regime by providing food and medical aid to the people."

Elsewhere, a woman was rubbed out by a sniper in the southern province of Daraa, bringing Tuesday's initial toll to four people killed.

On Monday, 100 civilians, 19 rebels and 41 soldiers were killed across Syria, according to the watchdog. Among the casualties were 60 people killed in Damascus province alone, including 57 civilians.

Panetta: Israel has not yet decided on Iran strike
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has downplayed reports that Israel is moving closer to taking military action over Iran's nuclear program He told reporters, "I don't believe they've made a decision as to whether or not they will go in and attack."

Both Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's ambassador to the US have recently said that time was running out, but Panetta said the US thought there was still room for talks with Iran. Panetta said, "The additional sanctions have been put in place. They're beginning to have an additional impact on top of the other sanctions."

Panetta took issue with televised remarks on Monday made by Israeli envoy Michael Oren in which he said that the window of time before the need to resort to military action was "small and... getting smaller".

Panetta said, "From our point of view the window is still open."

#1  Israel must know it will likely bear the brunt of Iran's fury ala Terror Ops in the wake of any attack by it agz Iran's NucProgs, espec as Iran does desire to avoid a major US-led ground campaign agz its soil.

The IRGC is intended to possess both proxy Terror, as well as "Main/Military Force" elements under its authority - IMO this infers that Israel will face not only Civie MilTerr Groups but also perhaps uniformed Iranian Commando-SPECOPS strikes.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. officials say
A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.

The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.

The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.

The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.

A Navy spokeswoman declined to comment.

One official said the Akula operated without being detected for a month.

“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.

“It’s a very stealthy boat so it can sneak around and avoid detection and hope to get past any protective screen a boomer might have in place,” the official said, referring to the Navy nickname for strategic missile submarines.

The U.S. Navy operates a strategic nuclear submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia. The base is homeport to eight missile-firing submarines, six of them equipped with nuclear-tipped missiles, and two armed with conventional warhead missiles.

“Sending a nuclear-propelled submarine into the Gulf of Mexico-Caribbean region is another manifestation of President Putin demonstrating that Russia is still a player on the world’s political-military stage,” said naval analyst and submarine warfare specialist Norman Polmar.

“Like the recent deployment of a task force led by a nuclear cruiser into the Caribbean, the Russian Navy provides him with a means of ‘showing the flag’ that is not possible with Russian air and ground forces,” Polmar said in an email.

The last time an Akula submarine was known to be close to U.S. shores was 2009, when two Akulas were spotted patrolling off the east coast of the United States.

#8  I'm with Yosemite Sam on this one. Unless our SATINT and SOSUS have been SEVERELY degraded since the cold war, this sub should have been detected all the way in and all the way out.

During the cold war we would have attack subs waiting behind the SOSUS line like dogs begging for dog treats. Then we'd latch on behind them and follow them wherever they went.

This sounds like a funding story: "The Russians are coming! Don't cut our budget!"

#10  $$$

That is the story.

The Russians did not send a sub out of their base without a satellite seeing it leave. And where it went, it was tracked. And surprise, it went somewhere. Please, please, send the Navy money.

Hollande Vows Tough Response to Amiens Riot
[An Nahar] French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, and a fine job he's doing of it...
on Tuesday promised a tough response to a riot that devastated a deprived neighborhood in the northern city of Amiens overnight.

"The state will mobilize all its means to combat these violent acts," Hollande said after a night of unrest that left 16 coppers injured, a primary school badly damaged by fire and a sports center completely destroyed.

"Security is not only a priority for us, it is an obligation."

Hollande's Interior Minister Manuel Valls was due to visit Amiens later on Tuesday.

The riot, which the local mayor has linked to rising social tension against a backdrop of a deteriorating economy, cast a shadow over Hollande's celebration of 100 days since he was elected.

Aoun on Samaha's Case: Let the Judiciary Complete its Duties
[An Nahar] Head of the Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
MP Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
hoped on Tuesday that the case of former minister Michel Samaha would not be exploited politically.

He said before news hounds the Change and Reform bloc's weekly meeting in Rabiyeh: "Let the judiciary perform its duties in the case."

"I do not take media leaks in the case into consideration," he remarked.

"The judiciary is the only judge in the case and it alone issues a verdict," continued the MP.

Government deputy Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Sami Sader charged on Saturday ex-Information Minister Michel Samaha and Syrian security Chief Maj. Gen. Ali Mamlouk with forming a group to commit crimes in Leb.

The two were also charged with plotting to assassinate political and religious figures.

Media leaks had said that Samaha was working at Syrian orders to prepare explosives to be used in attacks in northern Leb.

Commenting on U.S. Ambassador to Leb Maura Connelly's warning that Aoun may be the victim of an liquidation, the MP said that the ambassador has denied the report.

As Safir newspaper reported on Tuesday that Connelly had warned Aoun during a meeting some ten days ago that the U.S. Embassy had information that a "terrorist group was planning on assassinating him."

As Safir said that Aoun had inquired about the identity of the terrorist group and Connelly revealed it to be Hizbullah.

The channel aired a video showing al-Meqdad confessing that Hizbullah chief His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
ordered him to head to Syria to "support the Shiite Syrian regime" against "the Sunni gunnies known as the FSA."

Al-Meqdad, who is allegedly a sniper, noted that he hadn't infiltrated to Syria through illegal crossings, saying he was offered all the facilities on the border.

"We were a group of 250 in Damascus and resided in the Shrine of Sayeda Zeinab," he said.

He confessed most of the snipers are being trained in the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek.

Al-Meqdad urged Nasrallah to "halt his scourge of the Syrian people, who is only seeking freedom and a dignified life."

Analysis: Morsy's velvet revolution
By ZVI MAZEL

[Jerusalem Post] Morsy's Egypt is a new country, with a new religious agenda that it is eager to implement.

Without firing a single shot, President Mohamed Morsy managed to neutralize the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and complete his takeover of Egypt.

Though the way he did it -- with speed and efficiency -- is worthy of note, the move should come as no surprise.

Having at long last achieved their goal after 84 years, the Moslem Brothers were not going to accept any form of power-sharing with the army.

What happened, however, was not a "civil revolution" doing away with the power of the generals, but rather a coup d'état doing away with the constitution. Morsy unilaterally amended article 25 of the temporary constitution -- adopted by referendum in March 2011 -- which defined the presidential powers, and revoked the so-called supplementary constitutional declaration issued by the SCAF days before the results of the presidential elections were published.

That declaration gave the army extraordinary powers -- including the right to decide on its budget and to declare war.

Morsy, who now holds all legislative and executive powers, forced Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the minister of defense and head of the SCAF, and Lt.-Gen.

Sami Enan, the chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces, into retirement. The two senior officers were given medals in recognition of their long service to the state and were appointed "special counsels to the president" -- a hollow title.

The Egyptian president then went on to fire several highranking officers, including the commanders of the navy, the air force and the anti-aircraft unit. This was done in style, and the three men were given cushy posts in military industries and on the board of directors of the Suez Canal. Morsy thus brought to a successful conclusion the "cleansing" of the army that started last week when the head of the intelligence services and several generals were summarily dismissed.

Did Morsy also guaranteed immunity to all these officers? It remains to be seen, and already there are calls to have them answers for their crimes -- meaning their corruption during the Mubarak years and their part in the bloody repression of the protests in the course of the revolution.

There has been no reaction to Morsy's moves from army circles still reeling in the wake of the disastrous August 5 Kerem Shalom attack that had taken them by surprise. The old guard is tired and has no stomach for a fight for which there would be no popular support.

Besides, a look at the newly promoted generals, minister of defense and chief of staff clearly shows that the Brotherhood had managed to plant quite a number of "sleepers," officers loyal to the cause and biding their time.

Morsy now holds dictatorial powers surpassing by far those of erstwhile president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
. They include direct supervision of the all-important drafting of the constitution; he can dismiss the Constituent Assembly if he is not satisfied with its progress and appoint new members tasked with having a text ready within three months. The constitution will then be submitted to the people for approval by referendum and new parliamentary elections will follow.

Under Morsy's "guidance," the constitution will be resolutely Islamic and the new laws will follow the Shari'a; already the (disbanded) parliament had started discussing lowering the marriage age for girls and introducing corporal punishment.

Will the courts now intervene and protest Morsy's blatant flouting of the judicial process? The supplementary constitutional declaration had been duly endorsed by the Supreme Constitutional Court -- the court where Morsy was sworn in as president.

Morsy himself had acknowledged the declaration.

The judiciary has a long tradition of independence, but it is hard to see what it could do, since Morsy in all likelihood would disregard any ruling -- or, in all probability, start replacing top judges the way he replaced top generals. Time will tell.

In any case, more and more Egyptians are uneasy.

They don't want the Brotherhood to have total power, they don't want Egypt to become too religious and they don't want to see free speech curtailed. Yet this is already happening.

One television channel has been shut down after it attacked Morsy and called for a mass demonstration on August 24; the current issue of the daily Al-Dostour was seized because it dared criticize the president.

We have seen that the people are no longer afraid to demonstrate, but will they do so? They did protest during the funerals of the soldiers slain in Sinai, jeering and physically attacking the prime minister; shots were fired at the headquarters of the Brotherhood.

And the "spontaneous" demonstration of support for Morsy in Tahrir Square gathered a few thousands at most. It remains to be seen how many will come out on August 24.

The new state of affairs does not bode well for the relations between Egypt and Israel. According to a number of reports in mainstream Egyptian media, Morsy has decided to limit relations to the strict minimum and vigorously prevent any manifestation of normalization. Though military dialogue will go on, especially concerning the long border between the two countries and the security situation, Israeli representatives should not expect a warm welcome from their new counterparts.

Though Egypt will strive to maintain good relations with the United States in order to continue receiving impressive sums in military and other aid, it is turning more and more to Arab countries for help. Already the emir of Qatar has deposited $2 billion in Egyptian coffers, and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
did the same a few weeks ago. Libya may do this as well.

Gazoo will remain Morsy's main stumbling block, and he will do his utmost to persuade Hamas to tighten its control and prevent further attacks in the Sinai Peninsula, to what effect is not clear.

Too many people are making money smuggling arms and ammunition.

In short, Morsy's Egypt is a new country, with a new religious agenda that it is eager to implement. What is strange is that neither the United States nor the other Western powers appear worried.

One wonders when the penny will drop.

Another reason for Israel to miss Uncle Muammar, Mubarak, + now perhaps Baby Assad, as Brotherhood-led Egypt can easily turn into the Sunni version of anti-Israeli, hostile Nuke-wannabe Shia Iran - EVEN SUNNI SAUDI ARABIA WILL HAVE TO WATCH ITS BACK AGZ SUNNI UPSTARTS.

Acknowledging reality, Sweden releases PA from $28 million loan
[Ma'an] The Swedish government has decided to release the Paleostinian Authority from a $28 million loan dating back to 1999, the PA finance minister said Monday.

Minister Nabil Qassis applauded the Swedish government. "The Paleostinian people appreciate the Swedish political and economic support to the PA, which helps build future state institutions," he said in a statement.

The Swedish government had granted the PA a returnable loan in 1999 to fund an electricity project in the Gazoo Strip.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Happy American Pi Day!
[AFP] The US population reached a number dear to mathematicians on Tuesday: 314,159,265 or pi times 100 million.

"So go out and celebrate this American pi," quipped the US Census Bureau's chief demographer, Howard Hogan, in a statement marking the milestone.

"This is a once in many generations event," Hogan added in the release that reminded readers that "pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter."

The landmark was reached shortly after 1829 GMT.

Europe
Groups Demand Halt Of Berlin Anti-Israel March
The daily Berliner Tageszeitung's popular columnist Gunnar Schupelius has called on the Berlin authorities to ban a pro-Iranian regime demonstration slated for Saturday, because the Islamists who planned the march have declared death to the Jews and the destruction of the State of Israel. Pro-Israel and anti-Iran regime groups issued a call to oppose the al-Quds Day protest.

Schupelius wrote that the when the founder of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, established al-Quds Day in 1979 he "urged Islamists across the globe to conquer Jerusalem and destroy Israel."

Schupelius said the "hate demo" should not be covered by freedom of speech because it incites hatred -- prohibited under German law.

Germany's hate laws bar incitement against minority groups, including German Jews, but are infrequently enforced against expressions of modern anti-Semitism.

The al-Quds demonstration has become an annual event in Berlin since 1996 and merges thousands of radical Islamists, pockets of neo-Nazis and extreme Leftists into an anti- Israel march through the center of Berlin's main shopping district.

The columnist complained about societal indifference in Berlin toward the call to destroy Israel. "I cannot understand the indifference with which we allow hate" and that is why, he wrote, he had penned his column 10 days in advance of the al-Quds day protest.

Schupelius noted that had right-wing beturbanned goons been the force behind the demonstration, the authorities would long since have banned it.

"Instead we see Iranians, Turks and Arabs," he said.

The columnist added that the hate preachers from al-Quds target not only Jews, but also apostate Mohammedans. He cited the case of Iranian rapper Shahin Najafi who is in hiding in Germany because the Mullahs have issued a fatwa (religious order) for his liquidation.

A coalition of pro-Israel and anti-Khomeini system activists and groups are slated to counter-demonstrate on Saturday.

The various groups have organized around the message: "No al-Quds day: Against anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and homophobia! Solidarity with the Iranian democracy movement."

Some of the groups included in the counter-demonstration are the Jewish Forum for Democracy and Against anti- Semitism, the Green Party of Iran, the German-Israel Friendship Society in Berlin/Potsdam, the Pro-Israel-Initiative "neveragain" and AVIVA Berlin, a popular Jewish feminist website.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy had come up with a new idea...
the Norwegian daily Dagbladet on Sunday slammed Norwegian peace activists who plan to participate in a "Ship to Gazoo" action to break Israel's naval blockade of the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-controlled Gazoo Strip.

In the Dagbladet editorial, the paper asked in connection with Syria, "Where are the Norwegian activists now? Why do no Norwegian health workers want to do an effort in parts of Syria controlled by the bad boys?" A translation of the article first appeared on the pro-Israel media watchdog website Tundra Tabloids. Dagbladet added, "But on the whole we can probably just conclude that this is an internal Arab conflict, where one cannot bash Israel. Thus Israeli authorities have a point when they criticize the world for neglecting the Syrian population.

And we will ignore then, since there are political and not humanitarian reasons for the Israeli criticism."

In an email to The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, a leading Israeli authority on Norwegian anti-Semitism, wrote, "The Dagbladet article exposes that European multiculturalism is partly characterized by looking away as much as possible from crimes committed by Mohammedans in the Mohammedan world.

Many Western progressives are also humanitarian racists.

That means that non-Western criminals should not be held responsible for their deeds.

Thus there is also little interest in their victims. During [2006's Operation] Cast Lead Norwegian government sources paid for the trip of two extreme leftist Dr. Mads Gilbert and Eric Fosse to Gazoo.

Though they became vile Hamas propagandists, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg called them up saying that the whole of Norway stood behind them. There is no such mileage in the many 'Arabs murder Arabs' realities."

Gilbert did not return multiple Post emails and telephone calls seeking a comment.

Terror Networks
Al-Qaeda looking for 'new blood'
Global terror group tries recruiting new operatives via radical Islamists' message board; 'jacket wallah' position strangely asks candidates to detail 'previous experience'
"My previous detonations include the Mosul marketplace, the French embassy in Mogadishu, the the Wal-Mart in New Delhi..."
Global terror group al-Qaeda is in need of new recruits and like all other modern enterprises, if the buddy system fails -- online message boards just might do the trick.

According to a Tuesday report in Yedioth Ahronoth, the terror group posted an employment opportunity in June, on a message board known as a restricted forum frequented by radical Islamists. The position offered -- "suicide bomber."
"Good pay, excellent working hours, great benefits!"
The Arabic want-ad announced a Jihadist workshop meant for dedicated individuals interested in carrying out lone-gunman style attacks and suicide kabooms. The location -- "global."

The ad went into great detail as to the qualities the desired candidate should possess, listing among others "mental maturity, physical fitness, dedication, obedience and the tenacity to see the mission through."

Potential Death Eaters were asked to contact several email addresses, known as fronts for al-Qaeda operatives in the Arabian Peninsula.

They were asked to and provide a résumé detailing their age, state of health, the languages they speak, any foreign passport they have and their academic achievements.

Another peculiar demand -- especially considering the job title -- was for candidates to detail "previous experience."

According to the report, the advertisement read like an ode to suicide kabooms: "The individual concept of Jihad, which is advocated by Jihad leaders, is becoming common knowledge. From now on, one man can carry out an entire jihad."

The pitch goes on to explain that lone Jihadists have better chances of success and lesser chances of getting caught.

The ad also refers interested candidates to a video offering more details on lone-gunman style attacks, titled "You alone are responsible for yourself."

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
the job is not meant for everyone: Those with authority issues need not apply, as all potential suicide bombers will be subjected to the supervision of a military council, which will oversee their rigorous training; as well as decide on their intended target.

The al-Qaeda ad stressed that the organization will supply each "Jihad warrior" with the relevant information of their operation.

The terror group also stressed that the targets will only be "individuals who fight Islam and Mohammedans, as well as the enemy's military, financial and communications facilities."

The targets in question were prioritized to include "targets in America, Israel, La Belle France, Britannia and heretics on Mohammedan soil."

Many of the forum's members expressed interest in the ad, and one even suggested adding Germany, Denmark and Sweden to the list, but cautioned members not to share their skills online, as the information might "end up in enemy hands."

Moochelle B*tches At Olympic Gold Medalist Fer Eating a McMuffin
"You're setting me back, Gabby," Obama told Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas during a taping on Monday for NBC's "Tonight Show," according to a network transcript.

"Sorry!" replied the 16-year-old athlete, who confessed to eating a McDonalds' breakfast sandwich after winning two gold medals at the London Olympics.

Douglas became the third straight US athlete and first African-American to win the all-round title. She and her team-mates gave the US its first Olympic title in women's gymnastics since 1996.

[Dawn] Youths jeered and jostled La Belle France's interior minister on Tuesday in the northern city of Amiens when he promised to restore law and order at the scene of overnight riots in which police were fired at with buckshot and pelted with missiles.

President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France...
said the state would "mobilise all its resources to combat this violence", which has shaken depressed quarters of major French cities at regular intervals over the past decade.

Police and emergency officials in Amiens were on high alert on Tuesday evening and some, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said they feared a further flareup of violence.

Unrest is often blamed on a combination of poor job prospects, racial discrimination, a widespread sense of alienation from mainstream society and perceived hostile policing.
But really it's due to sheer hatefulness. Plenty of other people suffer without creating unrest.

Afghan-Pakistan border guards trade fire: Afghan officials
[Dawn] Authorities in Afghanistan said Tuesday that one of their border posts came under a shelling attack from Pakistain, prompting Afghans to return fire in a clash that lasted for more than two hours.

The incident, which reportedly caused no casualties, comes amid growing border tension between the neighbours, with Kabul alleging that Pak security forces have fired hundreds of rounds into Afghanistan in recent months.

Pak officials were not immediately available for comment but Islamabad has rejected similar allegations in recent past, saying Pak troops only respond to attacks from jihad boys.

Afghanistan and Pakistain typically blame each other for violence by Talibs plaguing both sides of their border, known as the Durand Line.

Afghanistan's interior ministry said Afghan border police and Pak security forces traded artillery fire in eastern Kunar province's
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
Dangam district on the frontline between the two countries, but there were no casualties.

"One of our border posts came under fire this morning from across the border. Our border police returned fire and the clash lasted for more than two hours," Najeeb Nikzad, an interior ministry front man, told AFP.

"No one has been hurt on our side and there are no reports of casualties on the other side either," he added.

He said Pak forces fired about 50 rounds -- 20 artillery and 27 mortar shells.

Afghanistan's parliament earlier this month dismissed the country's defence and interior ministers over alleged security failures, including the shelling of Afghan soil from Pakistain.

#1  No casualties....
Do they have pre-arranged empty fields to shoot into? Sure make things easier for both sides.
Considering how easy it is for snuffy to cross the border, getting a line on the other guys' positions oughtn't be difficult. Looks as if they actively avoid trouble, while making diplomatically useful noise from time to time.

Egypt, World Bank sign $200 million loan project
Egyptian Cabinet ministers and World Bank officials have signed off on a $200 million project aimed at creating 250,000 jobs after more than a year of slow economic growth.

The World Bank says the investments will be spent on financing for job creation by improving the environment for private sector-led growth and education.
Ta daaaa! Egypt has found another sucker to "loan" it money for operating expenses that will never be repaid.

Following the incident tension gripped parts of Baldia Town, where intermittent firing was reported, and gunnies forced shops and markets to shut at some places in Saeedabad.

The ST front man said a camp was set up in connection with Independence Day celebrations in the Saeedabad area which was attacked by terrorists.

He condemned the attack and called for the immediate arrest of the killers.

He said that earlier on Sunday a senior worker of the party was killed in New Bloody Karachi. The victim was the sector-in-charge of the Ranchhore Line, and he was going home in New Bloody Karachi when targeted.

MQM-H worker

A worker of the MQM-H was bumped off and two others were maimed when assailants shot them in Orangi Town on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident took place in Orangi Town No 4 within the remit of the Pirabad cop shoppe.

An officer of the Pirabad cop shoppe said Mohammad Naseer, 40, was sitting in front of his home when two suspects riding a cycle of violence shot multiple rounds at him. The victim suffered multiple wounds in the head and chest and was struck down in his prime.

"When they witnessed the shooting, children playing nearby started throwing stones at the fleeing suspects who resorted to random firing but left their cycle of violence behind and bravely ran away," the officer said.

Two other persons maimed in the indiscriminate firing were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. The dead was also shifted by the police to the ASH for medico-legal formalities.

Obama to NASA Experts: 'Let Me Know If You Find Martians'
[An Nahar] U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday ribbed scientists behind NASA's roving robot Curiosity, instructing them to let him know right away if they found life on Mars.

"If in fact, you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away," Obama joked, as he called the scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California from Air Force One.

"I've got a lot of other things on my plate, but I suspect that that will go to the top of the list. Even if they're just microbes, it will be pretty exciting."

Smugglers give the slip to customs staff
[Dawn] Two dozen suspected smugglers on Tuesday managed to get free a passenger bus loaded with chemicals, cloth and other contraband being smuggled from Khyber Pakhtunkhawa to Punjab.

The suspected smugglers attacked the Customs staff, damaged their vehicles and forced them to retreat before fleeing with the contraband.

Surprisingly, the customs staff did not call in reinforcements despite facing resistance from the smugglers.
It all happened when the Motorway Police signaled a passenger bus coming from Beautiful Downtown Peshawar to stop at Islamabad intersection of the Motorway.

After finding a large quantity of cloth, chemical and other goods being smuggled, the Motorway police informed the customs' anti-smuggling staff.

When they stopped, the suspected smugglers crashed their vehicle into the official double cabin van of the customs officials, damaging it.

The group then thrashed its staff and managed to snatch the impounded chemical and other contraband from the customs staff.
Pervez Iqbal, the customs inspector who was leading the squad, said in his complaint that on receiving information from Motorway police he along with his staff reached the scene and found the bus loaded with smuggled goods.

He said while the customs staff was taking the bus towards Kallar Kahar, (away from the Motorway) he found some five to 10 private vehicles blocking their way.

He said when they stopped, the suspected smugglers crashed their vehicle into the official double cabin van of the customs officials, damaging it.

The group then thrashed its staff and managed to snatch the impounded chemical and other contraband from the customs staff.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
a complaint was lodged with the Westridge police by customs inspector Pervez Iqbal which led to the registration of a case against the gang of smugglers.

No arrests have so far been made by the police.

French Capital to Lose Paris Hilton
[An Nahar] The U.S. socialite will be the only Paris Hilton left after the hotel chain lost the right to manage its sole establishment in the center of the French capital under a court ruling seen by Agence France Presse Monday.

Real estate and hotel firm SIHPM, owners of the Hilton Arc de Triomphe, took the U.S. group to court for "serious violations of its obligations" under a management contract awarded in 2003.

SIHPM accused Hilton of having under-exploited the potential of the hotel, which it believed should be a five-star establishment instead of four, the company's lawyer Maurice Lantourne said.

It therefore sought to end the management mandate for the 500-room hotel, according to the ruling dated July 5.

The commercial court ruled in favor of SIHPM after finding "breaches" by Hilton, and gave SIHPM three months to "proceed to remove all references to the Hilton brand" on the hotel.

An independent expert has also been named to evaluate the damages and interests. The SIHPM is claiming up to 60 million euros.

Hilton France said it was contesting the ruling.

The U.S. group runs four other hotels outside Paris, including at the city's two main airports and in Versailles, but the Hilton Arc de Triomphe was the only one located in the city center.

Dutch Navy Frees Somalis Held by Pirates

pirate-busting operation Ocean Shield helped rescue the crew of a Somali dhow hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, NATO said Tuesday.

In the operation early Monday, a Dutch navy transport vessel "disrupted a suspected pirate group before they could launch an attack on a merchant ship" from the hijacked dhow, NATO said in a statement.

Several suspects were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock

Philippine troops capture rebel bases
Philippine troops have occupied Tuesday two Muslim terrorist rebel encampments used as a base for attacks on military and civilian targets in a remote area of the province of Maguindanao.

Officials said ground forces, backed by helicopter gunships, attacked the bases used by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement in the town of Datu Hoffer and forced the terrorists rebels to abandon their camps.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but a statement from the 6th Infantry Division said the bases were former villages of indigenous tribe called Teduray who were forced out of their communities by terrorists rebels.

The statement said the bases called Hill 714 and Hill 166 were also used by rebels to train child warriors. It said, "Those Hills were formerly Tedurays community. Later was turned into training venues for child warriors and used then as the staging point for the BIFF rebels in planning their atrocities against soldiers and civilians in nearby communities."

It said security forces have secured the area and that troops were searching for booby traps and bombs.

The terrorists rebels attacked various military detachments last week in retaliation to the killing of a BIFM member supposedly by government soldiers, an allegation strongly denied by army spokesman Col. Prudencio Asto. He said, "That’s not true. The BIFM launched the attacks to disrupt ongpoing peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front."

The BIFM was established by Ameril Umra Kato, a senior leader of the MILF who broke from the terrorist rebel group, to pursue an independent Islamic state in the south.

Terrorist Rebel spokesman Abu Misri Mama said they were simply defending themselves from military assaults. In a clandestine interview, he said, “We did not start the fighting. It was the military and soldiers were also behind the burning of many houses and attacks on civilians."
