China's first private rocket fails after launch
[NY Post] The first attempt by a private Chinese company to send a rocket into space has failed.

Beijing-based Landspace said late Saturday that the first and second stage of its ZQ-1 rocket worked normally but something went wrong with the final of the three-stage rocket.

It was the first three-stage rocket built by a private company in China.

Video posted by a Chinese news site shows the 19-meter- (62-foot-) tall red-and-white rocket lifting off Saturday against clear blue skies.

Landspace said that "cowling separation was normal but something abnormal happened after the second stage." The statement posted on its social media account did not elaborate.

Chinese media reports say the rocket was carrying a satellite for state broadcaster CCTV.

Trump Preps Executive Order To Halt Illegals From Entering United States [Video]
[Victory Girls] In the midst of all the other news concerning hack lawyer Michael Avenatti, the explosive-ish devices sent to prominent Democrats, and the media’s caterwauling; the pending invasion of illegals has crept north. Which has led to President Trump ordering troops to the border and prepping an Executive Order to block illegals from crossing into the United States.

And, on cue, folks are throwing massive hissy fits because:

A. TRUMP ELEVENTY!!

B. They are all innocent and just want a better life (ignore the criminal behavior in their past please)

C. The CHILDREN! ...some of whom AREN’T., And some who’ve been sent on this path w/o parents or any support at all

D. It takes time, lots and lots of time to verify credible applications for asylum

So yeah, one can’t just waltz across a border and say I"M OPPRESSED AND LIFE IS IN DANGER! and that country will nod, say OK! and let them in. Sorry Charlie, that’s not how this works.

The Heidi Heitkamp's Kavanough 'Pay Off' - She loses the race, but walks away with the dough
[Hot Air] Seems productive. Her vote didn’t stop Kavanaugh and might very well have doomed her in a must-win state for Democrats, but here’s 12 million bucks that would have been more useful to Phil Bredesen or Bill Nelson as gratitude for being part of the Resistance.

What’s ex-Senator Heitkamp gonna do with all of this campaign dough? Unlike Beto!, another lavishly funded lost-cause hero, she doesn’t have a presidential run to plan.

Africa Subsaharan
Namibia throws out black ownership mining requirement
[News24] Namibia has scrapped a rule allowing only companies partly owned by black Namibians to apply for mining licences, mines minister Tom Alweendo told AFP on Saturday.

The southern African country produces diamonds, uranium and other mineral resources, but a three-year recession has pushed the government into relaxing the rules in the hope of attracting more investors.

Alweendo said the government made the decision last week.

"Our objective is to grow the mining sector where it can continue to meaningfully contribute to our socio-economic development. This can only happen when more minerals are discovered and it is important that we make the progress of mineral discovery as effective as possible," he said.

This, he said, required more investment in the sector.

The Namibian government started giving preferential treatment to black-owned companies in 2006, but eventually that was not deemed enough.
No, it never is.
The government then announced in 2015 that it had introduced additional conditions on mineral licenses holders to reserve a minimum of 5 percent participation in all licenses to Namibians and 20 percent of previously disadvantaged Namibians to be part of management structures of mines.

The Namibia Statistics Agency said the mining sector contributed 12% to Namibia's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017.

The sector employed around 16 900 people last year, or 2.5% of the workforce.

Addressing Global 'Fragility' - Congress Tries To Get Better At Doing The Wrong Things
[Daily Caller] The Global Fragility and Violence Reduction Act of 2018 (H.R.5273), sponsored by New York Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel, who is a vociferous opponent of President Trump, seeks "to reduce global fragility and violence by improving the capacity of the United States to reduce and address the causes of violence, violent conflict and fragility in pilot countries, and for other purposes."

That is: continue to dump ever more taxpayer dollars into Third-World sinkholes but in a more coordinated fashion.

Armed with the new buzzword "fragility," such a vaunted representative of Washington D.C.’s bipartisan permanent political establishment as the United States Institute of Peace, supports the passage of H.R. 5273 and hails the discovery of a "new" strategy (BEYOND THE HOMELAND: Protecting America from Extremism in Fragile States).

Formerly known as foreign aid, the Institute of Peace elaborates on its new strategy, which sounds eerily similar to a number of old strategies:

Arabia
It's Unnecessary to Pick Sides in the Gulf. America Should Stop.
[Defense One] U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s decision to back out of Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, "Davos in the Desert," is the first smart move the Trump administration has made in the aftermath of the killing of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. Trump promised a foreign policy guided by a strategy of "Principled Realism," yet his administration’s handling of the crisis has been neither principled nor realist.

Instead of working to reassure the Saudis and sweep this issue under the rug, a more realist policy would take advantage of Riyadh’s mistake to stand up for our interests and values, bring balance back to our relationship, and get a better deal for America.

Many of Trump’s advisors seem to operate under the illusion that America is in a weak position in dealing with the Saudis. (Thus, Secretary of State Pompeo’s short-notice trip to Riyadh and the caution with which the administration has reacted to the killing; thus, the warnings that America could lose Saudi investments if it doesn’t play nice; thus, the indulgence of the new Saudi narrative: that the attack was ordered by a regime insider gone rogue.)

But do the Saudis really have America over a barrel?

Power in negotiations comes from alternatives‐or, as candidate Trump put it in 2016, "When the other side knows you’re not going to walk, it becomes absolutely impossible to win...you just can’t win." America’s alternatives here are solid. The United States enjoys a very strong position in the region. Our vital interests there are to ensure that no a regional hegemon arise to disrupt the global oil market and that no transnational terrorists threaten America.

Confrontations broke out, according to the statement. Three snuffies were killed, while explosives and weapons were seized in al-Atshana village in al-Rashad region.

In related news, the Security Media Center said two snuffies were arrested in southwest of the province.

Europe
A human rights court upheld an Austrian woman's conviction for disparaging the Prophet Muhammad.
[The Atlantic] A few years ago, I appeared on a live Egyptian television show hosted by a conservative Muslim with jihadist sympathies. He lured me on by offering to answer any question I had about Islam, including, he said, "whether the Prophet Muhammad was a child molester." The host seemed awfully open-minded, I thought, given how humorless jihadists tend to be about their Prophet. When the lights went up and the program began, I mentioned the child-molester issue, and the host remained true to his word, neither bursting into a rage nor chiding me for my impertinence. (I wrote about the experience for the November 2012 issue of the magazine.)

Around the same time, a woman referred to as E.S. was convicted in Austria for, in effect, not phrasing her identical curiosity in the form of a question. On Thursday, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld her 2011 conviction for "disparagement of religious precepts," a crime in Austria. The facts of what E.S. did are not in dispute. She held "seminars" in which she presented her view that Muhammad was indeed a child molester. Dominant Islamic traditions hold that Muhammad’s third wife Aisha was six at their marriage and nine at its consummation. Muhammad was in his early fifties. The Austrian woman repeated these claims, and the Austrian court ruled that she had to pay 480 Euro or spend 60 days in the slammer. The ECHR ruled that Austria had not violated her rights.

Caravan Of Liberal Americans Makes Way Toward Socialist Paradise Of Venezuela
[Babylon Bee] MEXICO‐A migrant caravan full of leftists desiring to enter the socialist paradise of Venezuela departed the United States Thursday and began marching toward through Mexico, stating they will demand asylum so they might experience the far better life that socialism offers.

The migrants claim they are leaving America because of its high standards of living, strong economy, and record unemployment, and hope to find a better life in Venezuela's much more equitable system.

"Everyone there has the same quantity of possessions and food," said one marcher. "Everyone makes millions of dollars, and very few people work. It's a real paradise." The refugees have complex motivations, but the vast majority simply want to see everything socialism has to offer after suffering the amazing benefits of capitalism for too long.

Caravan organizers dispelled rumors that they were funded by Bernie Sanders, claiming the caravan was an organic grassroots movement.

At its current pace, the caravan is expected to arrive just in time for Venezuela to run out of food entirely.

France ups security around synagogues after deadly Pittsburgh attack
[Times of Israel] PARIS, France ‐ France said it was bolstering security around Jewish houses of worship Saturday, in the wake of a shooting attack that left 11 people dead in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday said he "strongly condemned the act of anti-Semitism in Pittsburgh."

The French leader said in a tweet that his thoughts were with the victims and offered his support to the grieving families.

A heavily armed gunman opened fire on Jewish congregants during a baby-naming ceremony at the synagogue in the US city earlier in the day, in what appeared to be one of the worst anti-Semitic attacks in American history.

A police officer stands under the rain outside the Tree of Life Synagogue after a shooting there left 11 people dead in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner later said in a tweet that he had told local authorities to "increase vigilance around synagogues" from Sunday.

Hamas demands $15 million per month in exchange for calm — report
[IsraelTimes] Israeli security cabinet set to convene Sunday for a briefing on the situation in Gazoo after weekend marked by salvos of rockets, IAF responses

Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", on Saturday demanded that Israel transfer the Gazoo-based terror group $15 million in cash from Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
every month in order to prevent further escalation in the Paleostinian enclave.

In a document handed to Egypt, the terror group’s Gazoo leader Yahya Sinwar added that the organization expects Israel to transfer the money by next Thursday, Hadashot TV reported.

According to the news station, the demand for cash is intended to circumvent the Israeli coordination and supervision mechanism that was in place until now, according to which the Paleostinian Authority would pay Gazoo worker salaries transparently.

Israel has not yet responded to the Hamas demand.

The Israeli security cabinet is set to convene Sunday for a briefing on the situation in Gazoo, as well as on the efforts being made by Egypt to broker a ceasefire between the Jewish state and Hamas.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other top security officials on Saturday.

A few hours after Islamic Jihad announced the ceasefire, the Eshkol Regional Council lifted orders that residents must remain in close proximity to bomb shelters.

Restrictions remained in place, however, limiting gatherings outdoors to 100 people and those indoors to 500.

The declaration by Islamic Jihad to end the rocket fire came as the Israel Defense Forces said fighter jets struck eight targets tied to the Iran-backed terror group in three separate military facilities after Israel was hit by salvos of rockets from Gazoo overnight and on Saturday morning.

The Gazoo targets included weapons production sites and a factory that makes parts for subterranean tunnels, the army said, adding that the later was near a school.

The top IDF spokesperson earlier blamed Iran and Syria for the Islamic Jihad rocket attacks. Though he did not accuse Hamas of taking part in the launches, Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis reiterated that Israel considers the terror group responsible as Gazoo’s rulers.

Another IDF front man, Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, said the rocket strikes were ordered by operatives from the overseas branch of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stationed in Syria and warned Israel may not limit its response to Gazoo.

"From our perspective, part of the address by which we will deal with this fire is also in Damascus and the Quds Force," he said. "Our response is not limited geographically."

Migrants in Caravan Turn Down Mexican Offer of Work Permits, Asylum
[PJ] Only about 1700 of the estimated 7,000 Central American refugees in a caravan heading to the U.S. border have accepted an offer from the Mexican government for asylum. The rest, now about 1,000 miles from the U.S. border, are continuing on their way.

The Mexican offer of asylum seems fairly substantial.

Trump declares his first national monument, honoring African-American troops
[Stars & Stripes] President Donald Trump on Friday used his executive powers for the first time to designate a national monument, establishing a 380-acre site in Kentucky to honor African-Americans’ role as soldiers during the Civil War.

The move won praise from local activists and conservationists but also criticism from several environmental groups, which noted Trump had used this same authority under the 1906 Antiquities Act last year to downsize two existing national monuments in Utah.

Republicans had pushed for more than a year to establish a national monument at Camp Nelson in Nicholasville, Ky., which served as one of the largest recruitment and training depots for United States Colored Troops. While Kentucky was the last state in the Union to allow the enlistment of African-American men, the camp sent 23,000 of the roughly 180,000 black troops who fought on the Union’s side during the Civil War.

US Troops Deploy ‘Overwhelming Force' Against Iceland's Beer Supplies
[Task & Purpose] U.S. troops landed in Iceland last week ahead of the start the largest NATO military exercise since the Cold War, and apparently, they left their mark in the most appropriate way possible: by drinking every last beer in the nation’s capital.

A significant number of bars in downtown Reykjavík were forced to make emergency beer runs under the onslaught of thirsty American sailors and Marines in town for the start of Trident Juncture 18, Iceland Magazine reports.

Local media estimate that 6,000 and 7,000 U.S. military personnel exhausted beer cellars across the Icelandic capital in the span of a single weekend.

Medical Expert: Migrant Caravan Could Pose Public Health Threat
[Breitbart] "It just makes no sense from a public health standpoint to let in a lot of people who have not been screened," Orient told Amanda House, deputy political editor for Breitbart News and host of Breitbart News Sunday on the SiriusXM Patriot Channel.

Orient said that unlike the days when Ellis Island was the place where migrants were tested for diseases and put in quarantine to protect against diseases in the incubation stage, in recent years people have been allowed to enter the country and settle across the country without proper screenings.

Orient said border security is not only important for public safety but for public health.

"I think we really need to control entrance to our county," Orient said.

"It just doesn’t make any sense in these days of exotic diseases [and] increasing antibiotic resistance to be allowing an invading flood of people," Orient said.

The Trump administration, including President Donald Trump, has said it will not allow this latest and largest group of as many and 14,000 migrants to enter the country and that the U.S. military will be used to make sure the border is not breached.

The Military Times is reporting that the Department of Defense will be deploying "800 active-duty troops, not National Guard forces, to increase the 2,100 National Guardsmen" already stationed along the border.

Economy
Another booming quarter, and even Democrats can't complain about the economy
[Wash Examiner] Last Dec. 22, President Trump signed the tax reform bill ‐ you know, the one that all Democrats loudly decried (but only a few decry now) as the "tax scam." That bill came on top of several major deregulatory measures during Trump’s first year.
A CAT operator appears to be preparing to construct a protective 'containment berm' around a battery of new 210 barrel storage tanks.
On Friday, we saw the results for the second quarter since the "tax scam" went into effect. And guess what? Its unexpectedly strong 3.5 percent annualized growth is a strong follow-up to the 4.1 percent growth in the second quarter of the year. Together, that makes for the best two-quarter stretch since 2014.

Inflation is down to a 1.6 percent annual rate. Consumer spending is up by 4 percent. Unemployment is down ‐ especially black and Hispanic unemployment ‐ and nearly 4 million new jobs have been created since January 2017. Real wages have risen in each of the last five months in a row.

Forecasters now project that the next quarter’s report will show 3 percent growth, which would make for the best three-quarter period since before the recession and financial crisis of a decade ago.

That’s a lot of evidence of success. But if you really want to see the effect that tax reform is having on the economy, then just look at this year’s election and the rhetoric surrounding it.

Yes, Democrats and their partisans in the media are attacking President Trump loudly and all other Republicans with him. They decry Trump as a ruthless fascist and racist who is killing millions of people and will destroy the planet using nothing but his mouth.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Continetti: ‘You Have a Geographic Separation' Forming in the United States
[Free Beacon] Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti said Thursday that cities and suburbs are forming separate cultures than more rural areas and smaller towns, creating a "geographic separation" in the United States.

"I think from a 30,000-foot view, [President Donald] Trump's appearance on the public scene three years ago seems to have ripped off the shroud that obscured a lot of latent tension between the left and the right in the United States," Continetti said during an appearance on Fox News' "Special Report." "And since he came down that escalator, you have had inciteful comments from both the right and the left, and you've had violence from both the extreme right and the extreme left."

"If you actually look at most normal Americans, they're nowhere as polarized as it seems the extremes are," Continetti added. "And so I think people in Washington need to think very seriously about how we get over this moment, because not only do you have these cultural clashes, and you've got the harassment in restaurants, you have mob violence, you have assassinations like this."

"You have a geographic separation," Continetti continued. "You have a culture forming within the cities and in their suburbs, and then a separate culture forming about 30 miles outside downtowns. And that, I think when you look at American history, is not a good thing to have."

Continetti made his remarks during a discussion on pipe bombs and suspicious packages that have been sent to several prominent Democrats and media figures in recent days. Authorities are investigating who sent the packages to Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, former Attorney General Eric Holder, Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.), former CIA Director John Brennan, billionaire liberal activist George Soros, and actor Robert De Niro. The package addressed to Brennan was delivered to CNN's office at the Time Warner Center in New York City, forcing the network to evacuate the building.

Actress Sangam Rana's murder suspects walk free after mother 'forgives' them
[DAWN] A Lahore sessions court on Saturday acquitted all three accused in stage actress Sangam Rana's murder case after the victim's mother forgave them in the court.

In December 2015, after Sangam was found dead at her residence, police had suspected foul play and treated it as a murder case despite her relatives insisting that she had did away with himself.

Days later, the dear departed's mother, Sughran Bibi, had filed an application alleging that her daughter was murdered and that her death was being portrayed as suicide to mislead the police.

However,

Sughra Bibi today pardoned Akash Ramzan, Usman and Amna Bibi ‐ the three accused in the case ‐ following which the additional sessions judge passed the order of their acquittal.

Israeli army says Syria ordered Gaza rocket fire with Iran backing
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Israeli army accused the Syrian government Saturday of instructing a Paleostinian krazed killer group to fire dozens of rockets at Israel from Gazoo with Iran's support and vowed to respond.

"The rockets that were launched against Israel... we know that the orders, incentives were given from Damascus with the clear involvement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force," army front man Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said referring to the Guards' foreign operations unit.

Conricus told news hounds Israel's response "is not limited geographically."

Israeli aircraft have struck dozens of "militant sites" across the Gazoo Strip as Paleostinians fired some 30 rockets into Israel in the heaviest exchange of fire between the bitter enemies in several weeks.

The fighting early Saturday followed a bloody day of border protests, in which Israeli forces shot and killed four Paleostinians protesting along the perimeter fence dividing Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,-ruled Gazoo and Israel.

The sudden burst of fighting and bloodshed complicated the mission of Egyptian mediators, who have intensified shuttle diplomacy to achieve calm and prevent a full-blown conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The Israeli military said it had struck some 80 sites across Gazoo by early Saturday morning, including a security headquarters building.

Civilians suffer casualties in IED explosion in Ghazni province
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least five non-combatants were killed or maimed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) kaboom in southeastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan.

The 203rd Thunder Corps of the Afghan Military in the southeast in a statement said the incident has taken place in the vicinity of Moqor district.

The statement further added that a Toyota Corolla type vehicle struck an IED planted on a roadside in Chahardehi area of the district, leaving two civilians dead and three more maimed.

The Talibs and other Lions of Islam including ISIS often use improvised bomb as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces and government officials.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
in majority of such attacks the ordinary civilians are killed while in some cases the Talibs are themselves blown up in premature kabooms.

Anti-government elements must immediately end the indiscriminate and disproportionate use of all improvised bombs (IEDs) in areas frequented by civilians, said UNAMA in a special human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
report released few weeks earlier.

The special report ‐ titled "Increasing Harm to Afghan Civilians form the Deliberate and Indiscriminate Use of Improvised Explosive Devices" ‐ documents a sharp increase from 1 January ‐ 30 September 2018 in the killing and maiming of Afghan civilians by IEDs, which have caused almost half of the civilian casualties from conflict-related violence.

Dr Kamal to govt: Meet our 7 demands, or face trial
[Dhaka Tribune] Jatiya Oikya Front leader and President of Gono Forum, Dr Kamal Hossain, said on Saturday that the government will be held accountable for violating the constitution daily.

"Concede to our seven-point demand while there is still time. You [government] can’t even imagine the trial and punishment you will face if the demands are not met," said Dr Kamal ‐ one of the architects of the Constitution.

He was addressing a rally at Kazir Dewri area in Chittagong.

Jatiya Oikya Front's seven-point charter of demands includes holding the 11th general election under an impartial government, release of BNP chief Khaleda and other political prisoners from prison, dissolution of parliament before the announcement of an election schedule, resignation of the government, no electronic voting machines in the polls, and reformation of the Election Commission.

Dr Kamal said the Oikya Front had been repeatedly denied permission for its rallies, and both in Sylhet and Chittagong, the government had moved them to smaller venues.

"The government has been violating the Constitution on a daily basis. Holding a rally is a fundamental right, which is guaranteed by the Constitution.

"We wanted to hold the rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
we were denied permission and have been forced to hold the rally in such a cramped space," said Dr Kamal at the rally.

He warned those violating people's fundamental rights, saying they must face trial.

Speaking at a rally arranged by Oikya Front in front of the BNP office he said: "If you violate or ignore the people’s decision, you can’t even imagine the punishment you will get for it."

He went on to say: "People are the owners of this state and the government is nothing but a servant of the people. They have taken it for granted that state power is their ancestral property. They are considering themselves as owners of the country. That's why they are clinging to power. People can make the impossible possible if they are united."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Book of the Week: Major General George H. Sharpe and the Creation of American Military Intelligence in the Civil War
It has been some time since swksvolFF’s life got so busy between his business, children, and fighting fires that he had to give up his regular Sunday column, “This Week In Books”, the discussions of which here at Rantburg added greatly to my understanding as well as my personal library. My gratitude to Doughnut Hole, who was inspired by this newly released volume to share it with us. I can only hope this piece is the first of many.
Major General George H. Sharpe and the Creation of American Military Intelligence in the Civil War
By Peter G. Tsouras
Casemate, 2018

Chapter 1, Page 12:
Colonel George Henry Sharpe, commander of the 120th New York Volunteers was probably not a very happy man in early February 1863. His regiment had not seen much combat since it was formed the previous August when it marched off to war from Kingston, New York. Instead, it was wasting away from sickness in the despondent camp at Falmouth, Virginia, after the disastrous defeat of the Army of the Potomac in December at Fredericksburg and the demoralizing "Mud March" of mid-January. Sharpe was an talented man with an active intelligence, and in the cold and mud of the camp near Falmouth he was intensely frustrated. But he cared for his men as intensely as a mother hen, and they returned the affection, asking him sometimes to lead them, in his fine voice, in a variation on "Benny Heaven's Oh" whose last verse was touch with the sadness all now felt.

From the courts of death and danger, from Tampa's deadly shore,
A wail of manly grief comes up, O'Brien is no more.
In the land of sun and flowers, his head lies pil-lowed low,
No more he'll sing Petite Coqulle, at Benny Haven's O.'

Sharp's service at Fredericksburg also brought him to the attention of his corps commander - Hooker. Sickles was a close friend of Hooker as well. Sickles had not stinted his praise of Sharpe.

A biographer of Sharpe and a family relation, G.B.D. Hasbrouck, had another account of how Sharpe came to Hooker's attention. Hooker was impressed with Sharpe's timely and useful command of French on the battlefield. A New York regiment of French immigrants, whose knowledge of English in an emergency left something to be desired. was being mishandled by its English-only-speaking commander, and milled in confusion, threatening to make a break in the line of battle. Sharpe intervened to issue the commands in fluent parade-ground French, which sent regiment property into the line.

When Hooker took command, he asked to learn the name of the officer who had put the French-speaking regiment into its proper place in the line. Finding it was Sharpe, he ordered the colonel to his headquarters for an interview. He asked Sharpe if he had indeed been the officer who had helped the regiment; when he relied that he was, Hooker further asked how rapidly he could translate French. Sharpe told him he could translate it as fast as he could read it. Hooker had been interested in translating a French book on the organization of a secret service and asked Sharpe to do it as soon as possible. Sharpe quickly delivered the translation and requested to return to his own regiment. Instead, Hooker asked him to prepare a plan for the organization and operation of a secret service to obtain information from the enemy.

IS-aligned insurgent slain in Sarangani
[MindaNews] An alleged key leader of an Islamic State-aligned group was killed in a clash with Philippine security forces early on the morning of October 22 in Sarangani province.

Police spokesman Eliseo Rasco said that Bassir Sahak was killed in a clash with a joint police and military team in Sitio Lebe, Barangay Daliao, Maasim town. Sahak was the leader of the Special Operations Group of the Islamic State-inspired Ansar Al-Khilafa Philippines (AKP), Rasco said in a statement. Sahak was also involved in the September 16 bombing at Barangay Apopong here that injured eight people, the official added.

The suspect was charged with multiple frustrated murder in connection with the latest blast to rock General Santos City.

Police official Adrin Gonzales said Sahak and his father, Kupang Sahak, fired at the operating team out to arrest them. The elder man managed to escape and is the subject of a manhunt operation.

Authorities recovered from the encounter site an M-16 rifle, ammunition and bomb making components, the official said.

Citing intelligence information, Gonzales said the slain suspect managed the finances of the AKP, including the procurement of firearms and ammunition. Sahak sourced funding from their contact in the Middle East, he said.

The AKP is one of the groups in Mindanao that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, according to the military.

The slain Sahak also had direct contact with the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu and the Toraife faction of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Maguindanao, the police official said.

Indonesian Buddhist imprisoned for complaining about loud mosque
[Reuters] An Indonesian court sentenced a Buddhist woman to 18 months in prison for blasphemy on Tuesday, after she was accused of insulting Islam for complaining that neighborhood mosque was too loud. Meiliana, an ethnic Chinese Buddhist had complained the Muslim call to prayer, repeated five times a day, was being played too loudly at the mosque near her house in North Sumatra.

“She had said something that insulted religion, in this case Islam,” said Jamaluddin, spokesman of the Medan district court, adding the defendant had “showed remorse and apologized”.

Last year, the former ethnic Chinese governor of Jakarta was tried and jailed for blasphemy after several Muslim groups accused him of insulting Islam when he said his political rivals were using the Koran to deceive voters. The ruling was widely condemned and believed to be politically motivated. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama also lost his re-election bid because of the accusations.

There are hundreds of thousands of mosques across the vast archipelago and most use loudspeakers to play the azan or call to prayer, which lasts a few minutes. But many also play lengthy versions of prayers or sermons lasting over 30 minutes, which has been deemed unnecessary by the Indonesian Mosque Council.

Seven Abus, three Philippine marines slain in Sulu clash
[PhilStar] Seven Abu Sayyaf rebels and three Philippine marines were killed in a clash in Patikul, Sulu on Friday. Three other soldiers were injured in the encounter.

”Twelve persons were apprehended for identification amid the exchange of gunfire. They are being interrogated by the troops,” Besana said.

Meanwhile, in Maguindanao, nine Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters surrendered in General SK Pendatun town also on Friday. The BIFF militants led by Parido Balabagan, alias Banog, turned over assorted firearms, grenade and rocket launchers and two rifles to the military.

Militant violence in Thai south down 70% since 2011
How wonderful! Well done to all involved — at least those working on the side of the angels, anyway.
[Bangkok Post] The security situation in Thailand's far South has improved over the last eight years, according to the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC).

SBPAC official Chanathan Saengphum said the overall situation is better with the number of violent incidents in the region decreasing by 70% since 2011. Citing figures compiled by the Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), 140 violent incidents occurred this year, compared with 619 in 2011.

These remarks come as the slogan "Patani Merdeka" was found painted on roads in Yala's Than To district yesterday morning. The word 'merdeka' means independence.

Mr Chanathan said several factors have contributed to the improvement in the region including greater transparency and wider public engagement in the government's roadmap for restoring peace in the region.

Local people see that violence is interfering with development and their livelihoods. Many have taken an active role in security operations to defend their communities from rebel attacks, he said.

Despite a decrease in violence, insurgents still recruit youngsters and use other incentives than political ideology to incite violence including business conflicts among interest groups, he said.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Penn Shooter: deranged social media postings, 11 dead, federal murder and hate crime charges
[Twitter] Robert Bowers, the Pittsburgh shooting suspect named on the police scanner, has a GAB posting history of deranged anti-Semitic conspiracy. Two days ago he claimed Trump was controlled by Jews, this morning he posted "Screw your optics, I'm going in"...absolutely chilling.

Synagogue shooter hit with 29 hate crime charges

[IsraelTimes] Federal indictment against Robert Bowers includes 11 counts of obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death

The man suspected of killing 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh has been charged with hate crimes following the massacre at the Pittsburgh house of worship.

Federal prosecutors said Robert Bowers was charged Saturday night in a 29-count criminal complaint, including 11 counts of obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death.

The charges also include 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder, weapons offenses and charges alleging Bowers seriously injured coppers while obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs.

"The crimes of violence are based upon the federal civil rights laws prohibiting hate crimes," the statement said.

Authorities said 11 people were killed and six people, including four coppers, were maimed during Saturday’s shooting at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

The charging documents were not immediately available in a federal court records database. Prosecutors have scheduled a Sunday morning news conference to discuss the case.

Bowers, who was captured alive after a shootout with police, had posted several messages online with virulent anti-Semitic content.

He was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds but was said to be in "fine" condition.

Earlier, Attorney General Jeff Session said the shooter would faces charges that could include the death penalty
.

"These alleged crimes are reprehensible and utterly repugnant to the values of this nation. Accordingly, the Department of Justice will file hate crimes and other criminal charges against the defendant, including charges that could lead to the death penalty," he said.

US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
told a rally that "When you have crimes like this... we have to bring back the death penalty."

Update from WFMZ-TV at 2:05 a.m. ET:
Michael Eisenberg, the immediate past president of the Tree of Life congregation, said three congregations -- Tree of Life, New Light and Dor Hadash -- would have been holding simultaneous services in the building on a typical Saturday.

"On a day like today, the door is open," Eisenberg told a reporter for CNN affiliate KDKA. "It's a religious service. You could walk in and out. Only on the high holidays is there a police presence at the entrance."

When he was the congregation's president, security was a "major concern," Eisenberg said.

The congregation had worked with the Department of Homeland Security to evaluate its exit routes, he said, and consulted a securities expert at the Jewish Federation about what to do in an active shooter situation.

"We were working with the other synagogues on what to do if something horrific like this happened," he said.
Clearly the situation could have been much worse. A friend told me CNN reported that the synagogue had done ALICE training, but I haven’t been able to find that information. I suspect that going forward the congregation will seriously consider budgeting for armed guards/police presence whenever there are services/Hebrew school classes, just as my synagogue has done since 9/11.

A cop buddy of mine does this for extra cash at a large church. No one notices, it's all very civilized. We can do the same thing in schools. An armed officer doesn't have to be kitted out like an Imperial storm trooper. Slacks and a blazer work, too. The important part is having a "sheepdog" around.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Book Thread - 10/28/18
Riches! After Doughnut Hole submitted his Book Of The Week (see next post, below) a few days ago, this unexpectedly appeared from swksvolFF after a long hiatus. Dear Reader, I know that you will feel as utterly spoilt as I do.
Guts ’N Gunships
What It Was Really Like To Fly Combat Helicopters In Vietnam

Mark Garrison
Garrison, 2015

I was in the middle of a personal accounting of events kick when I came across a taped interview with Mr. Garrison. He was telling a story about a mission being a bit too exciting. Something about how he told the story grabbed my attention, so I decided to check out his book. He of course begins at the beginning.

Page 6
Now, please understand that I didn’t want to do any of this crap. None of these choices were mine. Like kids across the nation I was caught in circumstances beyond my control, and I felt that my choices were bad, worse, and worst. I was just a twenty-year-old kid from a small town in southern Illinois. Just a few years before, I had been playing Pony League baseball. My biggest problem was that I couldn’t afford to buy a decent baseball glove. Needless to say, my problems had now escalated by about six order of magnitude.

Mr. Garrison shares 68 different short stories, from basic to his flight home. The stories are connected in a timeline, but stand on their own, making this book excellent for a quick 5 minute read or to read the entire book in an afternoon. These are adult stories, with adult language and antics. The language is clean, just adult in topic.

Page 120
With a scotch on the rocks in one hand, I took the other and knocked on the flimsy wall next to the olive drab blanket that hung over the door. I thought someone had to be in there as loud as the Led Zeppelin music was blaring. There was a short wait before a hand appeared that grabbed the door blanket and moved it aside.

Again, being a personal account book it is difficult to share passages without giving away the story. I enjoyed reading the stories; I would suggest the paperback at just under $15 unless you are into Kindle or, like me, go for Hardcover which at about $26, well, it is a quality bound book but for one read, a bit steep.

#1  Every so often I binge read about Vietnam, partly out of a sense of obligation to those who served there, and partly out of a there-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-I sentiment. I haven't read the Garrison book yet, but here are two I thought were awesome.

In the non-fiction category, Crouching Beast by Frank Boccia, which is the story of "Hamburger Hill" as told from the perspective of a young airborne lieutenant. This is a recollection rather than a formal history, and the author is in part the hero of the story, so I might discount some of the details, but even so it's a hell of a book. $9.99 on Kindle, but you're going to need a map or two close at hand.

As for fiction --and I'm assuming most folks here have already stayed up all night reading Jim Webb's Fields of Fire -- Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes is grimly inspiring. I suspect Mr. Marlantes and I would disagree on some political issues, but it's tough to argue with his Navy Cross, and this is basically a fictionalized version of what he did to merit that honor. (If you want pure fiction, watch the first episode of the Ken Burns series, which is as much as I could take without putting my TV in serious peril.) $9.63 on Kindle.

India-Pakistan
Banned groups
[DAWN] WHEN the move was announced earlier this year, it appeared that the state was beginning to take seriously the fight against holy warrior and Lions of Islam groups that had until then largely avoided scrutiny and sanctions.

Unhappily, that now seems to have been little more than a familiar last-minute effort to temporarily avoid international scrutiny and censure.

The Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
and Falah-e-Insaniyat
...the current false nose and mustache of Jamaat ud-Dawa, which was the false nose and mustache of Lashkar e-Taiba...
Foundation, offshoots of and widely perceived to be fronts for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
, were outlawed in Pakistain in February via a presidential ordinance amending the Anti Terrorism Act, 1997. Even though the presidential ordinance was suddenly moved ahead of what turned out to be a fateful Financial Action Task Force meeting in Gay Paree, it was a sound decision to ban groups active in Pakistain that have been blacklisted by a UN Security Council committee on sanctions against terrorist groups.

Aligning Pakistain’s domestic policies with its international obligations is a welcome and necessary step.

Yet, presidential ordinances have been constitutionally curtailed, and as soon as the ordinance to amend the ATA was passed, a 120-day expiration countdown began.

In April, it was reported that the federal government was considering placing a bill before parliament to replace the presidential ordinance. But parliament’s term ended in May; a caretaker government was in place till August; and now lawyers for Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
have told the Islamabad High Court where they are challenging the JuD and FiF bans that the presidential ordinance has lapsed.

Staggeringly, this has happened as a FATF team has visited Pakistain as part of a year-long compliance assessment and determined that Pakistain’s overall progress has been unsatisfactory when it comes to removing this country from the FATF grey list.

Nacta, which maintains and regularly updates a list of banned groups in the country, no longer has either the JuD nor the FiF listed as a proscribed group on its website.

While the JuD and FiF, and all groups that face state sanction and closure, are entitled to and must receive due process, the legal process should not be reduced to a farce.

If in February an assessment was made that Pakistain should expand the list of banned groups to include groups that have been banned by the UNSC sanctions committee, what has changed between then and now to justify a reversal of that decision?

The opaque and, at times, irrational decision-making that has characterised Pakistain’s fumbling attempts at rolling back some holy warrior groups and Death Eater networks not only harm the country’s international standing but will make it more difficult to eventually win the fight against all forms of terrorism, militancy and extremism.

Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
has pledged to reinvigorate and purposefully implement the National Action Plan. The military leadership has consistently maintained that there is no space for terrorism, militancy and extremism of any stripe inside Pakistain.

The national leadership must deliver on its promises.

Idlib ceasefire must be safeguarded, says four-way Syria summit
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The leaders of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, Russia, La Belle France and Germany on Saturday called for a ceasefire around the last major rebel-held bastion of Idlib in Syria to be preserved.

The four nations "stressed the importance of a lasting ceasefire" according to a statement read at the end of an Istanbul summit by Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
, and also called for a committee to be established to draft a new constitution for Syria before the end of the year, "paving the way for free and fair elections".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
said a solution to the Syria crisis cannot simply be military and must include a political process under the auspices of the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
that envisages free elections as a goal.

"At the end of this political process, there must be free elections to which all Syrians have access - including the diaspora," Merkel told a news conference in Istanbul where she met the leaders of Turkey, Russia and La Belle France.

MAJOR REBEL STRONGHOLD
The four leaders of gathered in Istanbul on Saturday for a summit on Syria, where violence this week in the last remaining major rebel stronghold highlighted the fragility of a deal to avert a massive government offensive.

Ankara, which has long backed rebels seeking to overthrow Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
, and Moscow, Assad’s principal foreign ally, brokered the deal last month to create a demilitarized zone in the northwest Idlib region.

Idlib and adjacent areas are the last stronghold of the rebels, who rose up against Assad in 2011. The area is home to an estimated 3 million people, more than half of whom have already fled other areas as government forces advanced.

Britain
The hate will be televised
[Dhaka Tribune] UK radical preacher Anjem Choudary
...Self-proclaimed holy man who used to work for Omar Mohammed Bakdri as spokesman for al-Muhajiroun. Anjem is a loathesome little attention prostitute who is to be heard cheering for the home team anytime anybody with a turban manages to slaughter a group of unarmed infidels. Anjem was born in the UK in 1967 and is, as you would expect, of Pakistaini descent. The Ghost of Dante is of the opinion that when he goes to hell his knees will be broken once a month. He is currently in jug for supporting the Islamic State..
has finally been released from prison after serving less than half of his five-and-a-half-year sentence due to time spent on bail and electronic tag supervision.

While in prison, Choudary refused to participate in any de-radicalization program or speak to mainstream Islamic holy mans, so we can assume his views have not been rehabilitated. This bizarre situation will now pose a headache for the UK authorities who will have to closely monitor his behaviour and interactions, less he resorts to his former conduct of encouraging support for ISIS and other holy warrior organizations.

But how did Choudary find himself with so much power and influence over the minds of so many young Moslems? And how did any of them get to the point of committing terror attacks? The tragic fact of the matter is that the media made Choudary. And in doing so, they did more to help promote extremism than most other forces which conspire against our safety.

Choudary has never been a holy man or holy man. He has no Islamic credentials -- to be a holy man one needs over a decade of formal study of the Qur’an, and be recognized as an authority by other scholars.

He has never been taken seriously by the mainstream Moslem community in Britannia, and has been expelled out of virtually every mosque in the country.

What Choudary did have, however, was a quick tongue and a fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
demeanour. And he loved wearing traditional Islamic robes reserved for the scholarly class. All he needed to qualify him as the go-to "Moslem preacher" when a sensationalist publication or broadcast were looking for an "interesting character" to give their news stories or their angle on the Moslem community in Britannia a bit of edginess.

The price for that "journalistic edge" was to give this opportunistic spiv a veneer of popularity, which helped him ensnare a cohort of weak-minded, troubled individuals to his hateful vision of the world.

Iraq
Corrupt figures in Iraq’s Integrity Commission: Totally normal!
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] One of Iraq’s parliamentary members thought it is too much that a person who has many corruption cases against him would seek to become a member of the parliament’s Commission of Integrity. The outraged MP said there was one specific person who is accused of committing fraud and embezzlement to the tune of 84 billion dinars (over $70 million).

It is not strange that the MP who has corruption cases against him seeks to become a member of the Integrity Commission, as he would like to bury his corruption files. There is however a more important question that the outraged MP should have asked and it is how did the MP whom he is referring to and who has all these major corruption cases against him even manage to become a member in the legislative authority?!

EVADING JUSTICE
The criticized MP was not named. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
we know that he is not the only one of the members in the current parliament who has been accused of such cases. Some of the tainted MPs have in fact already been convicted and sentenced to prison terms and fines but they managed to evade justice thanks to the 2016 amnesty law.

This piece of legislation rescinded convictions against hundreds of people convicted of terrorism charges (most of whom are Sunni), in lieu of the dropping of corruption cases against hundreds of people convicted of corruption (most of whom being Shiite).

What is worse is that some of the gunnies who were granted amnesty found their way again to their terror groups and no action was taken to prevent this. Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
those who were convicted in corruption cases, returned to their previously held high positions as governors, general managers, etc.

BLATANT CORRUPTION
Others continued to contest in elections on the list of parties that were not ashamed of their corruption. These candidates "won" and became MPs, thereby enjoying all the immunities that prevent their accountability and prosecution. This happened in spite the fact that Iraqi law prohibits any person from holding a public position if convicted of felony or any dishonorable misdemeanor, and corruption cases are one of the most dishonorable crimes!

Two of the currents MPs, who were governors before the elections, were transferred to the judiciary over corruption cases proven against them in court and verdicts were passed against them. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
they managed to evade the judgment based on the the amnesty law and returned to their previous appointments and then participated in the recent elections and "won"!

In the wake of this situation, the aforementioned outraged MP should not be surprised that his corrupt colleagues seek to become members of the Integrity Commission, especially when he knows the situation well and that there is nothing new to this country which is totally mired in corruption from the highest authority to the smallest employee in its administration.

Nigeria Launches Probe into Chinese Drugs Allegedly Containing Human Flesh, Fetus Remains
Ick. Or Soylent Green — your choice, dear Reader.
[Breitbart] Nigeria’s top intelligence agency warned that Chinese drug makers might be smuggling medicine "containing human remains from fetuses, infants, and flesh" into the country, prompting lawmakers to launch an investigation on Wednesday, the local Guardian newspaper reported.

The Guardian quoted a recent memo from the African country’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) as cautioning Nigerians:

The South Korean Customs Service on September 30, 2018, revealed that it had seized 2,751 Chinese drugs/capsules, containing human remains from fetuses, infants and flesh imported into the country by some Chinese nationals. It stressed that the making of the human remain drugs and consuming them are crimes against humanity, which can also lead to serious health challenges.

Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper learned that the NIA also learned from South Korea that the Chinese capsules also contained "18.7 billion viruses, including hepatitis B."

Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement accepts to stop firing rockets into occupied territories
[PRESSTV] The Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
resistance movement says it has agreed with Egyptian mediators to stop firing rockets from the Gazoo Strip into the Israeli-occupied territories and restore calm in the besieged coastal enclave.

"After contacts between the Islamic Jihad leadership and the brothers in Egypt, it was agreed that a comprehensive ceasefire will begin immediately," the movement’s front man Dawood Shihab said in a press statement released on Saturday.

He added, "The Islamic Jihad will abide by the ceasefire if the occupation (Israel) does the same."

Earlier, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, al-Quds Brigades, said it had fired dozens of rockets from Gazoo into communities in the southern sector of the occupied territories in retaliation for Israel's killing and injuring a number of Paleostinian protesters on Friday.

It said in a statement "fire for fire and blood for blood," adding, "if the Zionist enemy wants to expand the circle of fire, we are ready to do so and ready to protect our people."

In response, Israeli fighter jets carried out intensive Arclight airstrikes on military facilities, training posts and buildings, which belonged to Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, and the Islamic Jihad, all over the Gazoo Strip.

Main accused in Ahsan Iqbal assassination case handed 30 years in jail
[DAWN] An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Gujranwala on Saturday handed Abid Hussain, the main accused in the Ahsan Iqbal liquidation case, 30 years and two months in prison while acquitting four others accused of facilitating him, DawnNewsTV reported.

Judge Syed Ali Imran also handed fines to the tune of Rs280,000 and ordered the convict's assets to be confiscated.

Former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal had been shot at and injured during a corner meeting in Kanjrur town in Narowal on May 6, 2018, in what had been described as an liquidation attempt.

District Police Officer (DPO) Imran Kishwar had told DawnNewsTV at the time that Iqbal was shot by the assailant ─ who was also present at the corner meeting ─ with a 30-bore pistol from a distance of 20 yards.

Iqbal had sustained a bullet wound in his right shoulder, the DPO had added.

Thankfully, the people standing around the assailant overpowered him before he could fire a second shot at his target. The coppers present at the site then locked away

the suspect, seized his weapon and shifted him to a cop shoppe.

The interior minister was initially shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Narowal following the attack, but was later airlifted in a helicopter to Lahore where he received further medical treatment.

The suspected shooter had been immediately taken into custody. At the time, he was identified as a local 20 to 22-year-old youth residing in the jurisdiction of the Shah Gharib cop shoppe in Kanjrur tehsil.

It later emerged that the suspect had had a declared affiliation with the Tehrik-e-Labbaik.

In a preliminary report sent to the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

chief secretary hours after the attack, the Narowal deputy commissioner had reported that the suspect had identified himself as Abid Hussain, son of Mohammad Hussain, a resident of Verum village, Tehsil Shakargarh of Narowal district.

Kashmiri separatist leaders issue plea for 'full military support'
[DAWN] Warning that the situation in Indian Kashmiree was worsening beyond control in the wake of unprecedented atrocities by Indian forces, leaders of various armed Kashmiri separatist groups on Saturday called on Islamabad to extend them "full military support".

"India’s entire leadership and institutions are unanimous in their nefarious designs to annihilate the Kashmiris and their economy [...] Their brutalities and bloodlust is unprecedented in history and the situation is getting out of control," observed Syed Salahuddin
...the aging, morbidly obese chief of Hizbul Mujaheddin and the titular head of the United Jihad Council in idyllic Kashmire. Originally owned body and theoretical soul by Jamaat-e-Islami he and his organization are currently controlled by Pakistain's ISI. Salahuddin's hobbies include crocheting doilies shaped like the Taj Mahal, combing his enormous beard, and eating....
, head of the United Jihad Council (UJC), at a presser at Muzaffarabad's Central Press Club.

The UJC brings together around a dozen groups fighting the Indian occupation of Kashmire, of which Salahuddin’s Hizbul Mujahideen
...Party of Holy Warriors, founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989. One of the Pak sock puppets waging jihad in Indian Kashmir. It was originally organized as the armed wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the sword arm of Jamaat. Hizbul murdered many of the pro-independence intelligentsia in Kashmir. After the organization was taken over by Syed Salahuddin Dar and several other ex-Hizb leaders were assassinated between 2001 and 2003...
is the largest constituent.

Leaders of almost all member outfits accompanied Salahuddin at the presser, which coincided with the observance of a ’Black Day’ to condemn India’s invasion of Jammu and Kashmire on this day in 1947.

Salahuddin warned that "a grave human tragedy" was in the making in Indian Kashmiree and added that the Government of Pakistain should announce full military support for Kashmiris "without wasting even a second."

"Please do not leave the Kashmiris at the mercy of 800,000 savage troops [...] After all, they [Kashmiris] too are human beings and may run out of patience anytime," he said.

He regretted that Pak leadership was "begging" for talks notwithstanding India’s "intransigence, haughtiness and jingoism".

"There does not arise any question of a peaceful negotiated settlement of the longstanding [Kashmire] issue in the presence of such an attitude and atmosphere in India," he said, asking Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi to "hear the pleas of Kashmiris in their hearts."

He pointed out that Pakistain had held "more than 150 rounds of talks" with India in the past, but had gained "nothing except damage to the Kashmire cause".

"We feel so much pain when we see Pak rulers pinning hopes on talks. I wonder: Why are they following the beaten track?" he said.

"If we could not judge them [India] over the past seven decades, it’s a grave mistake on our part," he said.

Salahuddin noted that despite the "criminal silence" of international institutions and the weak policies of governments in the ’base camp’ (Azad Jammu & Kashmire), Kashmiris were "fighting the tyrant army with stones and sticks".

"But for how long? Isn’t it high time Pakistain extends us full military support?" he said.

He maintained that since Pakistain was the basic party to the dispute, it was her moral, constitutional and national responsibility to extend full support to the struggling Kashmiris.

Saudi Arabia rejects Turkish call to extradite Khashoggi killers
[PRESSTV] Soddy Arabia

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's calls on the kingdom to extradite 18 Saudis wanted for the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi as international outrage mounts over the killing.

The outright rebuff by Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Saturday came a day after President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
renewed his call for the 18 men to be extradited for trial in Turkey.

"The individuals are Saudi nationals. They're detained in Saudi Arabia, and the investigation is in Saudi Arabia, and they will be prosecuted in Saudi Arabia," Jubair told a regional security forum in Bahrain.

Saudi authorities say they have nabbed
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
the men following the international furor over Khashoggi's murder, which was reportedly carried out in the consulate by a team which flew to Istanbul.

Ottoman Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul said on Friday that Istanbul's chief prosecutor had formally written the request for their extradition.

"The Ottoman Turkish authorities are determined and able to solve this case. We expect the extradition," he said in a statement, adding that the suspects would be tried on charges of premeditated murder and torture.

A senior Ottoman Turkish official said "the reasoning behind the extradition request is that Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in Turkey by Saudi nationals who traveled to Turkey for this specific purpose."

But the Saudi foreign minister said the kingdom would carry out any investigation on its own.

"The issue, as I said, is being investigated. We will know the truth. We will hold those responsible accountable. And we will put in place mechanisms to ensure it doesn't happen again," Jubeir said.

Yemeni army unveils new domestically-built high-precision Badr P-1 ballistic missile
[PRESSTV] Yemeni army forces have unveiled a domestically- designed and -manufactured smart missile intended to precisely hit specific targets, minimize collateral damage and increase lethality against designated targets, as the Riyadh regime presses ahead with its atrocious aerial bombardment campaign against its southern neighbor.

The media bureau of Yemen’s Operations Command Center, in a statement released on Saturday, announced that the short-range and solid-propellant Badr P-1 missile is an upgrade of Badr-1 missile, and has a pinpoint accuracy of 3 meters.

Earlier in the day, Yemeni soldiers and allied fighter from Popular Committees struck the al-Mostahaddeth base in Yemen’s western coastal province of Hudaydah with the same ballistic missile, killing and injured a large of Saudi-led Sudanese troopers there.

Nanny took our baby boy with her to torch ex’s car: mom
[NYPOST] This naughty nanny never should have been near her son.

That’s the cry of an angry Upper West Side mom after a babysitter sent by a service bolted with her infant boy to New Jersey, where the crazed caretaker tried to torch an ex-boyfriend’s car.

"I’m sick to my stomach," said angry mother Bethany Carlson, who discovered that sitter Leslie Rosario, 31, got locked away

Friday for taking her one-year-old on the ill-fated attack. "I will never use a service like this again."

The online Sittercity.com boasts of having "connected millions of families and sitters" since 2001, but Carlson said it put her child at risk.

"I’m furious that they don’t take responsibility for who’s on their site. There are so many things that could have happened. Who can trust this site? My mind goes to the Upper West Side nanny killer. It’s fresh in everyone’s minds," she said.

Yemen’s Houthis criticize Oman for Israeli premier visit to Persian Gulf Arab state
[PRESSTV] Yemen’s Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
Ansarullah movement has criticized the Sultanate of Oman for welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his unannounced visit to the Persian Gulf Arab country.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, the president of the Houthi Supreme Revolutionary Committee (SRC), made the remarks in a tweet on Saturday, adding that the real goal of the Israeli premier’s trip to Muscat "is to isolate Oman from playing any positive role in the future with its allies and friends."

He added that Muscat should learn "a lesson" from the governments of those Moslem countries that "normalized ties with Israel but lost their nation" as the condemned relations with Tel Aviv created deep rifts between them and their people.

Netanyahu, along with a delegation, including Yossi Cohen, the director of the Mossad spy agency, and National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, arrived in Muscat on Thursday night and flew back to the occupied Paleostinian territories later on Friday, making it the first such meeting in over 20 years.

A joint statement by Netanyahu and Oman’s ruler Sultan Qaboos said the two sides "discussed ways to advance" the so-called Middle East grinding of the peace processor and "a number of issues of mutual interest to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East."

Oman rejects mediating between Israelis, Palestinians
[PRESSTV] Oman says it will not act as a "mediator" between Israelis and Paleostinians, playing down an earlier visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The sultanate was only offering ideas to help Israel and Paleostinians to come together, Omani Foreign Minister Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah told a security summit in Bahrain’s capital Manama on Saturday.

The remarks came a day after Netanyahu visited Oman in a rare visit, while accompanied by other senior Israeli officials, including the head of the Israeli spy agency Mossad.

"We are not saying road is now easy and paved with flowers, but our priority is to put an end to the conflict and move to a new world," Rooters cited Abdullah as saying.

Despite apparently trying to sound impartial, Abdullah said Oman relied on the United States and efforts by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in working towards the "deal of the century."

The Trump administration has targeted the plan at the situation in the Paleostinian territories.

Details are yet to emerge, but reports say it envisages a Paleostinian state with limited illusory sovereignty across about half of Israel-occupied West Bank and all the Gazoo Strip. The deal also reportedly foresees potential disarming of the Paleostinian resistance movement Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, and does not find Paleostinians entitled to the eastern part of Jerusalem al-Quds as their capital.

Dark prediction: Dark star made of dark matter could lead to entire dark universe
[NYPOST] Nothing is important. We’re almost sure it’s there. But we don’t know what it is. But this nothing could control the fate of the universe. And there may even be entire solar systems made of it.

Physicists have been grappling with dark matter — and dark energy — for decades.

It’s where many of our laws of physics disappear in a puff of smoke.

We know gravity. We understand gravity. But there simply isn’t enough stuff in our galaxy — and the known universe — to explain why things are where they are.

Something must be producing 80 percent of the gravity at play. Something we can’t see.

That something is proving to be remarkably elusive.

It’s “dark” because we don’t understand what it is.

Some of the world’s most complex — and expensive — experiments have done little more than offer tantalizing tastes of what could be out there. But even the Large Hadron Collider hasn’t yet isolated any particle that could possibly explain what dark matter is.

#3  ...We know gravity. We understand gravity...

actually we don't, at least not completely

we don't have an adequate quantum field theory of gravitrons;

#6  Actually, AlanC, the GPS system needs to use Einstein's General Relativity to work as accurately as it does.
For most stuff that's human-scale, Newton works OK.

Testing hypotheses has gotten harder and harder. It turns out to be pretty tough to make a black hole to use for testing. And getting close to the existing ones takes a while and is quite uncomfortable.

Even if you're not looking for effects at the extremes, just verifying that your brand new theory covers all the bases can take months or years of calculations.

But the problem w/ theorists working in CloudCucuLand is well known--even some theorists complain about it. http://backreaction.blogspot.com/

I mean you could have separate but nearby universes (like a stack of paper would be analogous to a group of 2d universes) if gravity wasn't constrained to just our universe.

But this "theory" isn't testable, so it's just my fun opinion.

of Mercury which Newton mechanics could not explain. "Dark matter" in the form of planet Vulcan [https://arstechnica.com/science/2015/11/the-messy-reality-of-science-revealed-by-the-long-hunt-for-a-missing-planet/] was introduced to preserve Newtonian gravity but the problem was finally resolved by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (GR) which modified Newton's theory.
Now move to today. The angular velocity of galaxies cannot be explained by GR so once again "dark matter" is introduced to explain it. I know, gravitational lensing offers support for dark matter but that is not ironclad. My money is on new Quantum theories of gravity [https://www.quantamagazine.org/erik-verlindes-gravity-minus-dark-matter-20161129/]. They haven't nailed it yet but I think they eventually will.

#13  The Freeman Dyson anecdote in a cautionary article on taking models as reality(Wavefunction blog):
The problem, as Fermi pointed out, was that Dyson's premise was based on fitting a curve to some data using four parameters. But, quipped Fermi, you can get a better fit to the data if you add more parameters. Fermi quoted his friend, the great mathematician John von Neumann - "With four parameters you can fit an elephant to a curve; with five you can make him wiggle his trunk".

ISIS, in a statement published on the Telegram messaging application, said it had attacked the village of al-Sousa late on Friday, and detonated a boom-mobile near the village of al-Bagouz further south.

On September 15, the SDF said its fighters had stormed Bagouz and were close to the center of the village.

The forces added that they planned to open another front in Sousa area along the Euphrates River to build up pressure on the bad boys.

The development came only a day after at least 20 SDF gunnies were killed in a ISIS ambush around the town of Hajin in Dayr al-Zawr province.
I begin to suspect the writer meant Deir Ezzor, as it is spelt around here.

#1  this was from PRESSTV so I wasn't sure it was accurate

but there are confirmations from other sources also the dead are probably not all combatants

also, Islamic State seemingly used a large number of coordinated suicide bombers in their counterattack

leaders including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar from Pak jails.

The Office of the President in a statement said the former President Hamid Karzai welcomes the Pak government’s move regarding the release of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Mullah Mohammad Rasool, and some other Taliban leaders from the jails.

Karzai further added that the release of Taliban leaders from the jails is a positive step forward for the Afghan peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He said efforts were also made during his tenure for the release of Mullah Baradar and Taliban leaders and conditions were also set for the meeting between the former Afghan High Peace Council Chief Salahuddin Rabbani and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Karzai expressed hopes that the Taliban leadership would make good use of the opportunity which has been made available with the release of Mullah Baradar and take effective steps in coordination with the efforts of the Afghan people to bring peace and stability in the country.

#2  Background information from Tolo News:

Sources and the Taliban last week confirmed the release of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who they said was now back with his family in Karachi after spending eight years in prison.

Sources said last week that Baradar was released after the intervention of Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Representative for Afghanistan’s Reconciliation, who visited Kabul twice this month to discuss peace talks with Afghan leaders.

Baradar is a co-founder of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan. He was Mullah Mohammed Omar, the founding leader of the Taliban’s deputy. Omar’s death was confirmed in October 2016.

Baradar was captured in Pakistan by a team of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officers in February 2010.
