Climate change pushing 'farmers' north in caravans
[Guardian] While violence and poverty have been cited as the reasons for the exodus, experts say the big picture is that changing climate is forcing farmers off their land ‐ and it’s likely to get worse.
Lots of cheap farm land in California, you'll see.
Thousands of Central American migrants trudging through Mexico towards the US have regularly been described as either fleeing gang violence or extreme poverty.
As well as other situations of their own making.
But another crucial driving factor behind the migrant caravan has been harder to grasp: climate change.
Yes, 'harder to grasp' indeed.
Most members of the migrant caravans come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador ‐ three countries devastated by violence, organised crime and systemic corruption, the roots of which can be traced back to the region’s cold war conflicts.

Experts say that alongside those factors, climate change in the region is exacerbating ‐ and sometimes causing ‐ a miasma of other problems including crop failures and poverty.

And they warn that in the coming decades, it is likely to push millions more people north towards the US.

#7  Perhaps not in the way the authors intended... Several years ago I was talking to a fellow employee that came from Central America about the "...rising cost of corn and bread at his home village." Diverting foodstocks into biofuels will inevitable raise food prices because the grain is a fungible good. We may consider it 'commercial' grade, but poor people down south don't necessarily share that fastidiousness.

#8  The CIA World Factbook has an answer to why Guatemalans are being pushed off the land:

Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America and has the highest fertility rate in Latin America. It also has the highest population growth rate in Latin America, which is likely to continue because of its large reproductive-age population and high birth rate. Almost half of Guatemala's population is under age 19, making it the youngest population in Latin America. Guatemala's total fertility rate has slowly declined during the last few decades due in part to limited government-funded health programs. However, the birth rate is still more close to three children per woman and is markedly higher among its rural and indigenous populations.

No climate change needed when there are too many kids for the land to support, even with faster crop growth due to higher atmospheric carbon dixide.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Washington, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Reagan, and Trump ‐ All American Nationalists
[Breitbart] Remember the media-stoked controversy over Donald Trump declaring that he was a "nationalist"? Sample headline in USA Today: "’I am a nationalist’: Trump’s embrace of controversial label sparks uproar." That uproar might seem hard to recall now, because it was all the way back on ... October 23.

It was the day before the October 24 uproar about the steroid-crazed male stripper who sent unexploded‐and apparently unexplodable‐bombs to various Democratic offices. And it was also before the horrendous tragedy in Pittsburgh on October 27, when an anti-Semitic psycho shot and killed 11 worshipers at a synagogue.

It might seem challenging to put a larger political spin on the lonely acts of kooks and evildoers, but the establishment media is up to the challenge‐especially if it involves dinging Donald Trump. Indeed, the media’s latest storyline is that Trump’s "violent rhetoric" is to blame. Here, for example, is a headline from The Guardian: "Donald Trump’s rhetoric has stoked antisemitism and hatred, experts warn." (You know that the media really means to make a point when they cite "experts.")

In the face of such a determined media onslaught, the thoughtful words of the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, went almost unheard. Speaking on the scene of the Pittsburgh massacre, Dermer told CNN, "I have never seen a stronger statement" than the one that President Trump issued in the wake of the shooting. This only makes sense: After all, Trump’s daughter Ivanka is Jewish, along with his son-in-law, and three of this grandchildren. But since he was so "off message," you can bet that CNN won’t be inviting him back anytime soon.

Still, even if the "nationalism" controversy is two controversies ago, it’s not going to go away. It’ll linger as a media talking point, and, who knows, perhaps it will become one more article of impeachment next year if the Democrats win back the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6.

So it’s worth pausing over this word, "nationalism," to see why it puts the left in such a tizzy.

China-Japan-Koreas
China Subtly Plays The Iran Card
[Daily Caller] China seeks global domination.

The vehicle to achieve it is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a collection of infrastructure projects and a network of commercial agreements designed to link the entire world directly to the Chinese economy through inter-connected land-based and maritime routes. The guarantor of that soft power approach is the hard power of military expansion.

Beijing’s ambitions cannot be realized, starting with supremacy in South Asia, if its largest single BRI investment, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), fails.

There are certain preconditions for the success of CPEC: (1) the removal of U.S. and NATO military forces from Afghanistan; (2) a reduction of American and Indian influence in South Asia; (3) the curtailment of Islamic extremism and ethnic separatism; and (4) a decrease in regional tensions due to national rivalries; all to be obtained under the stewardship of China, a "Pax Sinica."

Critical among China’s efforts is the successful wooing of Iran and its proper placement within the framework of CPEC. Given the inherent competition and sometimes enmity in the region, China has been obliged to navigate a diplomatic minefield cautiously, combining direct support for Iran with what appear to be calculated, yet sometimes convoluted attempts to leverage the current U.S.- Iranian conflict to its regional advantage.

On October 29th, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Yao Jing stated, "China is interested in the partnership of the friendly states and neighbors of Pakistan, specially Iran, in the CPEC project."

#6  I have been assured that "Camp of Saints", a 1973 French novel by Jean Raspail that depicts the destruction of Western civilization through Third World mass immigration is a work of fiction.

via Wikipedia:
Raspail has said his inspiration came while at the French Riviera in 1971, as he was looking out at the Mediterranean.

What if they were to come? I did not know who "they" were, but it seemed inevitable to me that the numberless disinherited people of the South would, like a tidal wave, set sail one day for this opulent shore, our fortunate country’s wide-gaping frontier.

Missouri Parents Call BS on 'RACIAL EQUITY' Training
[Powerline] Yesterday, I noted that five of seven candidates for the Montgomery County, Maryland school board say the biggest problem facing the school district is lower achievement by "students of color." I disputed the notion that this gap is the school board’s responsibility or problem, but that view seems to be an article of faith in education circles nowadays.
Our Lightening Round category is 'Food and Drink:' HO_C_K_S
It’s also generating a new industry ‐ cultural and racial equity training. Pacific Education Group is an industry leader. According to the Kansas City Star, the California firm "has been in high demand in recent years, training educators, city leaders and corporate executives from Lawrence [Kansas] to New York and Philadelphia to Los Angeles and around the world."

The Group’s founder, Glenn Singleton, is the author of "Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools." The "courageousness" of Singleton’s politically correct conversations is open to question, but according to the Star, his is the No. 1 book recommended by the Missouri School Board Association for educators and administrators to read this year.

Recently, however, parents in a Missouri school district ‐ Lee’s Summit ‐ rebelled against paying Singleton and his group to provide cultural and racial equity training. They expressed their displeasure at a school board meeting and on social media.

According to the Star, critics "opposed Singleton’s firm because of its cost, and its discussion of white privilege and the cultural competence of white teachers educating black children." Some wondered why the focus should be on inequities related to race.

#2  The federal government runs two school systems, one for the Department of Defense and one for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The former scores above the national average, the latter below. The key element left out in all such 'disparate' findings is the home environment. If education is not pressed and pushed at home, no amount of funding will make much difference. That unfortunate situation however doesn't put money in the hands of administrators, education professionals and all the allied business such as the Singleton's associated with public education. It's all a scam. Asked why he robbed banks Willy Sutton said because that's where the money is. The public treasury is just the biggest bank.

Britain
Rampant Bias and Misinformation at the Guardian
[Powerline] Since becoming President of Minnesota’s public policy organization, Center of the American Experiment, at the beginning of 2016, I have gotten a new perspective on media bias and ineptitude. I have always thought those problems were bad. Now I think they are worse. Take a look at the email that I received this morning from Jessica Glenza, a reporter for the Guardian US. Its subject is an "URGENT Press Inquiry." Ms. Glenza’s email drips with arrogance, ignorance and prejudice:
Dear Sir:

My name is Jessica Glenza. I am a health reporter for the Guardian US, based in New York.

I am writing because the Guardian is conducting a wide-scale investigation on the tobacco policy positions of Atlas Network and associated thinktanks. This thinktank was identified by Atlas Network as an affiliate, and identified by The Guardian as taking positions on tobacco policies.

There is a significant body of evidence which demonstrates the following:

* Smoking kills more than 7 million people each year, according to the World Health Organization. That total is expected to rise to 8 million by 2030, without action to control tobacco use, the WHO has said.

And on it goes.

Terror Networks
Mil Times Follow-up article: 5 freed from Gitmo in exchange for Bergdahl join Taliban's political office in Qatar
[Military Times] KABUL, Afghanistan ‐ Five members of the Afghan Taliban who were freed from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in exchange for captured American Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl have joined the insurgent group’s political office in Qatar, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Tuesday.

They will now be among Taliban representatives negotiating for peace in Afghanistan, a sign some negotiators in Kabul say indicates the Taliban’s desire for a peace pact.
Bowe Bergdahl as the deranged POW. Carter Page as the traitorous Russian spy. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as.... Same basic diversionary theme, different movie.
Others fear the five, all of whom were close to the insurgent group's founder and hard-line leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, bring with them the same ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam that characterized the group's five-year rule that ended in 2001 with the U.S.-led invasion.

1990's: Harry Reid: It's Insane To Reward Illegal Immigrants By Giving Their Children Birthright Citizenship
[Hot Air] An oldie but goodie to cleanse the palate. We’ve blogged it before but I’d forgotten all about it until I was reminded today, now that the subject is topical again. Reid said this in the early 1990s, a decade that saw huge growth in Nevada’s Latino population and a sea change in the AFL-CIO’s attitude towards immigrant labor. By 1999 he had reconsidered his position. But then, convenient flip-flops on big-picture worldview-defining issues weren’t unusual for Reid.

He would have reversed himself eventually even if electoral pressures in his home state hadn’t forced him to. It’s hard to imagine a modern Democrat supporting any meaningful disincentive to illegal immigration but it’s completely unimaginable to imagine one backing a tweak to the Constitution(!) that would deny something as momentous as citizenship(!!). If we haven’t yet reached the point where open borders are as sacrosanct to liberals as feticide, we’ll get there. His logic in the clip is perfectly sound, though: Inescapably, if you grant citizenship to children of parents who have no lawful right to be in the United States, you’ll get more would-be parents attempting to enter the United States unlawfully. And that’s never been truer than it is today, as the Democratic Party veers ever further towards radicalism on immigration. Hillary Clinton wanted to preserve Obama’s (now defunct) DAPA program, which would have granted de facto legal status to illegal-immigrant parents of natural-born U.S. citizens. That is, if you snuck across the border and gave birth here, the last two Democratic nominees for president were prepared to not only uphold citizenship for your child but to reward you with the right to stay too. "No sane country would do that, right?" says Reid in the clip below. Correct. No sane country.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
U.S. Indicts 9 Chinese Cyber Spies
[Free Beacon] The Justice Department announced the indictment of nine people on Tuesday linked to a Chinese cyber intelligence operation targeting aerospace technology.

The nine people, including intelligence officers, state-controlled hackers, and recruited agents inside companies were linked to computer intrusions at U.S. and European companies and the theft of turbofan jet engine technology used in commercial airliners.

The operation was directed by cyber spies operating out of the Jiangsu Province branch of the Ministry of State Security, the civilian spy service, based in Nanjing, China, and known as the JSSD.

Two MSS officers indicted in the case were identified as Zha Rong and Chai Meng, who worked with state-controlled Chinese hackers and insiders working for targeted aerospace companies.

The MSS hacker team under the direction of the two MSS officers were identified as Zhang Zhang-Gui, Liu Chunliang, Gao Hong Kun, Zhuang Xiaowei, and Ma Zhiqi.

The Justice Department did not say where the nine people are or whether any have been arrested.

"From January 2010 to May 2015, JSSD employees, along with individuals working at the direction of the JSSD, conspired to steal sensitive commercial technological, aviation, and aerospace data by hacking into computers in the United States and abroad," states the indictment dated Oct. 25 and unsealed on Tuesday.

The alleged arson comes at a time when Mexican authorities reported the use of firearms and Molotov cocktails within the migrant caravans as they make their way through Mexico to the United States.

The fire was reportedly started at a facility dual-purposed as a checkpoint and makeshift detention center for Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) in Pijijiapan, Chiapas, when a group of migrants housed there set fire to their mattresses, Televisa Noticias reported. According to local public safety director Jaime Marroquin, authorities were housing 21 men, five women, and three children which were in the process of being deported. The migrants reportedly set fires to give cover to their escape.

Firefighters responded to the scene while Mexican Federal Police officers detained the alleged runaways and moved them to a large immigration facility in Tapachula, Chiapas.

The fire comes only hours after Mexican Federal Police arrested two Honduran men who allegedly shot at cops guarding the migrant caravan currently in Chiapas, Breitbart News reported. The caravan began its journey earlier this month in Honduras and publicly announced its intent to reach the U.S. border. The Mexican government offered the caravan temporary jobs, health care, and education if they agreed to stay in southern Mexico and follow the country’s legal procedures for requesting asylum. The group largely turned down the offer, however, according to the INM, 111 migrants agreed and requested Mexican identification documents.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia: White Helmets begin filming fake chemical attack in Syria
[PRESSTV] Russia says it has received information showing that a Western-backed so-called aid group is preparing to stage a false flag chemical attack in the northwestern Syrian province of Aleppo to incriminate Damascus.

The Defense Ministry said the "White Helmets," which according to Moscow and Damascus cooperate with Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
terrorist groups in the Arab country, have already started the filming process for the attack, Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported on Monday.

"The Russian center for reconciliation [in Syria] received information from residents of Aleppo that they are preparing another provocation with the use of toxic agents to accuse the government forces of using chemical weapons against the local population," said Lt. Gen. Vladimir Savchenko, the head of the center, according to the ministry.

They arrived in Aleppo from the neighboring Province of Idlib, bringing along containers holding toxic agents, he added.

The group, the official said, sought to stage artillery shellfire with the containers and also meant to provoke the Syrian military to retaliate.

The White Helmets group, projected by the West as "civil defense workers," was founded by former British Army officer James Le Mesurier in 2014. The self-styled volunteer rescue group has been repeatedly accused of acting as the media arm for Takfiri groups, and charged with staging false flag chemical attacks in a bid to prompt Western military intervention in Syria.

In April, the United States, La Belle France, and Britannia launched missile strikes against multiple targets around Syria after alleging that "video evidence" provided by the White Helmets had pointed to an earlier chemical attack in the city of Douma in the Arab country’s southwest.

Subsequent investigations showed the video had been fake.

Earlier in the year, Israel transported several hundred members of the group from southwestern Syria to Jordan overnight at the request of the US and European countries, as Damascus was preparing to launch counter-terrorism operations in those areas.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
PLO votes to suspend recognition of Israel, terminate all agreements
That’s nice – of course that means Israel also it is not bound by all those agreements...But what does the “government”, the Palestinian Authority, have to say on the subject?
[PRESSTV] The Paleostine Liberation Organization’s central council has voted to suspend its recognition of Israel and terminate all agreements with the regime until Tel Aviv recognizes a Paleostinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.

The PLO announced the decision late Monday at the end of a two-day meeting in Ramallah. A committee will now be created to examine the recommendation, which would also need the approval of Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
The Organization has urged the Paleostinian Authority to halt all its commitments to the ’occupation authorities’, including its security cooperation and trade agreements with the regime, until they meet the demands.
Got it — they’re just posturing.
The PLO council essentially wants to cease compliance with the 1993 Oslo Accord, which set out a transitory phase during which the Paleostinians would move toward statehood.

The council has declared that this transitory phase, which was only supposed to last for five to seven years, is over. It insisted that Paleostinian statehood must be recognized now.

"In view of Israel's continued denial of the signed agreements, the PCC (PLO Central Council), in confirmation of its previous decision and considering that the transitional phase no longer exists, decides to end the commitments of the PLO and the Paleostinian Authority toward its agreements with the occupying power, suspend recognition of the state of Israel until its recognition of the state of Paleostine on the June 4, 1967 borders with east Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital, end security coordination in all its forms, and disengage economically from Israel on the grounds that the transitional phase, including the Gay Paree Economic Protocols no longer exist," said the PLO statement posted on the official Paleostinian news agency Wafa.

The PLO central council’s decisions are not binding; however, it acts as an advisor to the PA on making future decisions on its policies toward the Israeli regime.

Science & Technology
Can we predict when and where a crime will take place?
[BBC] The new crime-fighting weapon of choice for a growing number of police forces around the world isn't a gun, a taser or pepper spray - it's data. But can computer algorithms really help reduce crime?

Tech firm PredPol - short for predictive policing - claims its data analytics algorithms can improve crime detection by 10-50% in some cities.

It takes years of historic data, including the type, location and time of crime, and combines this with lots of other socio-economic data, which is then analysed by an algorithm originally designed to forecast earthquake aftershocks.

The software tries to predict where and when specific crimes will occur over the next 12 hours, and the algorithm is updated every day as new data comes in.
"PredPol was inspired by experiments run by the University of California in collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department," says PredPol co-founder and anthropology professor Jeff Brantingham.

"That study demonstrated that algorithmically driven forecasts could predict twice as much crime and, when used in the field, prevent twice as much crime as existing best practice."

Predictions are displayed on a map using colour-coded boxes, each one representing a 500 sq ft (46 sq m) area. Red boxes are classed as "high risk" and officers are encouraged to spend at least 10% of their time there.

Prof Brantingham says machine learning allows PredPol to analyse data, draw conclusions and make connections between large amounts of data that human analysts simply could not cope with.

Sceptics say this is pseudoscience, because crunching crime data to make informed decisions on police deployment is nothing new.

Many forces have traditionally used "hot spot analysis", where past offences are recorded and overlaid onto a map, with officers concentrating on those areas.

But PredPol and others working in this space, such as Palantir, CrimeScan and ShotSpotter Missions, say that traditional hot spot analysis is just reacting to what happened yesterday, not anticipating what will happen tomorrow.

AI and machine learning can spot patterns we've never noticed before.

"Machine learning provides a suite of approaches to identifying statistical patterns in data that are not easily described by standard mathematical models, or are beyond the natural perceptual abilities of the human expert," says Prof Brantingham.

Alexander Babuta, of the National Security and Resilience Studies group at the Royal United Services Institute, agrees, saying: "Retrospective hotspot mapping does not distinguish between two types of 'risky' locations, those that simply experience a high volume of crime over time because they are more attractive to criminals, such as insecure car parks and busy shopping areas, and areas where the likelihood of crime has been temporarily increased due to crime events that have recently occurred.

"But machine learning predictive policing technology does."

Police forces certainly seem to be buying in to the idea.

More than 50 police departments across the US use PredPol software, as well as a handful of forces in the UK. Kent Constabulary, for example, says street violence fell by 6% following a four-month trial.

"We found that the model was just incredibly accurate at predicting the times and locations where these crimes were likely to occur," says Steve Clark, deputy chief of Santa Cruz Police Department.

"At that point, we realised we've got something here."

But predictive policing has its critics.

Frederike Kaltheuner, data programme lead at civil rights group Privacy International, wonders whether it will also be used to predict police violence and white collar crime, or simply used against communities that she says are already marginalised.

"We're moving away from innocent until proven guilty towards a world where people are innocent until found suspicious by opaque and proprietary systems that can be difficult, if not impossible, to challenge," she says.

Rand analyst John Hollywood says recent advances in analytical techniques have produced only "small, incremental" improvements in crime prediction; results that are 10-25% more accurate than traditional hot spot mapping.

"Current technologies are not much more accurate than traditional methods," he says.

"It is enough to help improve deployment decisions, but is far from the popular hype of a computer telling officers where they can go to pick up criminals in the act."

School principal in Peshawar handed 105 years in prison for child abuse, rape
[DAWN] A sessions court in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on Tuesday handed a total of 105 years in prison to a private school's principal on charges of child abuse, pornography, rape, blackmail and maintaining illicit relations.

The convict, Attaullah Marwat, was also fined Rs1.4 million in addition to the jail terms. The sentences were handed down by Sessions Judge Younis Khan.

The accused, who is the private school’s owner, was jugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
after the Hayatabad cop shoppe started the paperwork but haven't done much else against him on July 14, 2017, on the complaint of a boy student, who had accused him of sexually exploiting schoolchildren, including girls, and filming them with secret cameras installed on campus.

Marwat was convicted and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment under Sections 354-A (stripping a woman of her clothes), 365-B (kidnapping or inducing a woman to compel her into marriage) and 377 (unnatural offence/sodomy) of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC).

He was also awarded two years and 20 years rigorous imprisonment under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 376 (punishment for rape), respectively, of the PPC.

As many as 25 direct and indirect victims of Marwat had their statements recorded before police against the convict; however, it is believed that a majority of his victims had not come forward.

One of the charges against the convict was that he had forced, persuaded, coerced and enticed female students under the age of 18 to engage in sexual activities and exposed their bodies, and was involved in explicit sexual conduct and abuse of minor schoolgirls.

Marwat was also charged with forcing, coercing and persuading female students of his school to engage in sexual activities and capturing those acts on his mobile phones and secret cameras installed in different parts of the school and storing them in USBs.

The convict had allegedly "on multiple occasions and habitually" enticed and compelled multiple women of different ages to have illicit relations with him inside the school.

He was also charged with sexually assaulting multiple women after coercing them with death threats.

Following his arrest last year, the accused had recorded his confessional statement before a judicial magistrate on July 19, 2017, wherein he had admitted only that he used to bring women from outside to the school for the purpose of adultery.

Meanwhile in Chicago
[ChicagoTribune] Chicago saw one of its most violent days of the year Sunday, with 26 people shot over 18 hours, many of them in neighborhoods on the West and South sides.
It's worse than the Al Capone days.
That level of violence has been surpassed only once before in the city this year: on Aug. 5 when at least 41 people were shot over seven hours. A total of 75 people were shot that weekend, the most violent in Chicago in at least two years.
Are they going for the Guiness world record?
Over this past weekend, at least 42 people were shot, five of them fatally, including a 16-year-old boy, according to data kept by the Tribune. Nearly half of those shootings occurred in the Englewood police district on the South Side and the Harrison and Austin districts on the West side -- neighborhoods that have borne the brunt of violence this year.
Only 5 fatalities. Someone needs more range time.
A 23-year-old man was killed and a 24-year-old woman was injured when someone shot into their vehicle Sunday morning in the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood, police said. The pair was in a vehicle about 10:55 a.m. in the 5500 block of South LaSalle Street when someone in a black four-door Audi opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the chest and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The woman was shot in the lower right leg and taken to the same hospital in serious condition.

Earlier Sunday, at about 2:15 a.m., a 16-year-old boy and 19-year-old man were walking through an alley in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood when they were shot by someone in a silver sedan. The 16-year-old was shot in the chest and left shoulder and taken to University of Chicago, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The 19-year-old was shot in the foot and showed up at Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition.
Shot in the foot. The shooter must have taken lessons from a Palestinian.
About two hours earlier, a 20-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old woman was wounded in a drive-by shooting about 12:20 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Peoria in the Englewood neighborhood. The pair was standing on the sidewalk when they were shot by someone in a dark-colored SUV. The man, shot in the neck, was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, said police. The woman, shot in the right leg, was taken to University of Chicago, where she was stabilized.

About 5:50 p.m. Saturday, a 33-year-old man was parked in the 2000 block of East 95th Street in Calumet Heights. The man was in his vehicle when he was shot in the back by someone in another vehicle. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The first fatal attack of the weekend happened about 10:30 p.m. Friday in the first block of North Karlov Avenue in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were walking on a sidewalk when the assailant walked up and fired. The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, and the teen was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the back, also at Stroger.

Kara's statement comes amid a diplomatic push by Israel in the mainly Sunni Gulf, which Israel sees as an ally against Shia power Iran.

It follows visits by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Oman on Thursday and Culture Minister Miri Regev to Abu Dhabi at the weekend.

Stolen inflatable colon found in vacant home
[NYPOST] A giant inflatable colon that was stolen from the University of Kansas Cancer Center nearly two weeks ago has been found, police said.

The "giant, inflatable, pilfered intestine" was recovered from a house in Kansas City, Missouri after Sherlocks followed up on a tip. The Kansas City Police Department tweeted on Monday that nobody has been taken into custody yet, noting their investigation into the theft is ongoing.

The "stolen colon" ‐ weighing 150 pounds and costing more than $4,000 ‐ was poached from the bed of a parked pickup truck in a Kansas City neighborhood on Oct. 18, according to the Colon Cancer Coalition. It was supposed to be displayed at a breast cancer 5K on Oct. 20.

On Saturday, the American Society of Gastroenterology offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who came forward with information regarding the missing colon.

The inflatable colon is often used as an educational tool by medical center staff for various university and community events.

Saudi $6bn to Pakistan comes with strings
[AsiaTimes] Saudi Arabia's crisis over Khashoggi murder is Imran Khan's gain, but Pakistan may still be expected to up military cooperation with the kingdom.

Upon his return from Saudi Arabia, Khan said: “My fellow Pakistanis, today I am here with good news for all of you. We were facing really hard times. We were under high pressure to pay heavy debts. But thanks to Saudi Arabia’s extension of assistance, we are out of this pressure.”

The coming months will reveal if Pakistan is prepared for the reasons behind the kingdom’s generosity and whether the country can continue to deflect military requests in Yemen.

Kansas militia men blame Trump’s rhetoric for planned attack
See what the Left hath wrought.
[IsraelTimes] Attorneys for Kansas militia members who conspired to bomb a mosque and apartment complex housing Somali immigrants colonists ask the court to take into account at a sentencing hearing next month what they called US President Donald Trump

’s rhetoric encouraging violence.

One has asked the judge to also consider the fact that all three men read and shared Russian propaganda on their Facebook feed designed to sow discord in the U.S. political system.

A federal jury convicted Patrick Stein,

Gavin Wright, and Curtis Allen
...the men formed a splinter group of sovereign citizen militia Kansas Security Force that came to be known as "the Crusaders”....
of one count of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction
...also known as a truck bomb...
and one count of conspiracy against civil rights in April.
Apparently blowing people up for being Muslim Somalis is a violation of their civil rights. Who knew?
Wright was also found guilty of lying to the FBI. The attack, planned for the day after the 2016 general election, was thwarted by another member of the group who tipped off authorities about escalating threats of violence.
That would be Dan Day, who found the planning got a little too real for his taste.
U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren will consider at their sentencing on Nov. 19 and 20 how much time each man will spend in prison. Conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction carries a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while the sentence for the civil rights violation carries no more than 10 years. The sentencing had previously been scheduled for Friday.

Prosecutors are seeking life terms for all three, while defense attorneys are variously pleading for shorter terms of 15, 10, or even time served.

The government pointed to the seriousness of the offense, which it says continues to have "a deep, lasting impact on the victims’ sense of security in their homes and at their mosque. It also wanted to ensure the men can never threaten the safety of the public again. And it argued for the need to send a strong deterrent message that violence against the government or any person will not be tolerated.

FBI looking into bid to smear Russia probe chief Mueller
[Al Ahram] The FBI is investigating an alleged scheme to pay women to accuse Russia collusion probe chief Robert Mueller of sexual harassment in a bid to discredit him, Mueller's office said Tuesday.

The scheme was uncovered after one woman who said she worked for Mueller decades ago told several journalists she had been offered $20,000 to accuse him of sexual misconduct.

"When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation," Mueller's front man Peter Carr said.

Carr did not offer any additional details, but his rare public statement made clear that Mueller's office was taking the claims seriously.

When a matter is referred to the FBI, the agency must investigate the merits of the complaint.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Vows New Operation Against Kurds in Syria
[Asharq Al-Awsat] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Tuesday that Ankara will launch a new operation against US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria east of the Euphrates River.

Turkish forces have already forced the People’s Protection Units (YPG) from the region west of the Euphrates. Ankara considers the group a terror threat and an extension of Kurdish rebels waging an insurgency in southeast Turkey.

Erdogan's remarks came just days after the Turkish military shelled Syrian Kurdish positions in the region.

"Soon, we will descend on them with more comprehensive and effective" force, he vowed before members of his AK ruling party.

“We will destroy terror structures east of the Euphrates,” he added.

Turkey's official Anadolu news agency said Turkish artillery strikes on Sunday hit Kurdish trenches and positions on a hill in the village of Zor Moghar, in rural northern Aleppo.

On Idlib, Ankara rejected Syrian regime claims that it is not meeting its obligations under an agreement to create a demilitarized zone around the opposition-held northeastern region.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu dismissed the allegations on Tuesday, saying the agreement was continuing as planned.

"There are currently no issues in implementing the memorandum... Everything is going as planned," he told a news conference in Istanbul.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Turkey was doing its best to fulfill difficult obligations in Idlib, but that "not everything was going as it was planned".

Russia did not see a threat that the agreement would fail, he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a four-way summit on Syria with Turkey, Germany, and France on Saturday that Ankara was fulfilling its obligations in Idlib.

The leaders at the Istanbul summit stressed the importance of a lasting ceasefire in Syria, and said a committee to create a new constitution should meet by the end of the year.

Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkey would ensure a more active international role in Idlib after the summit.

Peskov said Moscow would inform Syrian officials about the outcome of the summit.

South Sudan Rebel Leader Set to Return to Juba
[Al Awsat] South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar is expected to return to Juba on Wednesday, more than two years after he fled the country, announced his office on Tuesday.

He will celebrate a peace deal upon his return. The collapse of an earlier accord forced to him to originally flee the country.

Lam Paul Gabriel, a spokesman for Machar's SPLM-IO rebel group, said the leader will "travel to Juba for the peace celebration" due Wednesday.

He would hold celebrations with his long-time rival, President Salva Kiir, in Juba - though there was no immediate confirmation from the government.

Machar's previous homecoming, in April 2016, was put off by wrangling over how many bodyguards he could bring with him and what weapons they would carry, but Gabriel said this time Machar would be accompanied by only around 30 political figures.

"We are worried for his security in Juba, but the truth is here: we are for peace, and what we are trying to do is build trust. So that is why he is able to leave his forces behind and just go with politicians," Gabriel said.

The world’s youngest nation plunged into civil war in late 2013 when troops loyal to Kiir clashed with forces loyal to Machar, the former vice president.

Ethnically charged fighting soon spread from the capital across the impoverished state, shutting down oil fields, forcing millions to flee and killing tens of thousands of people.

“Machar will lead a delegation of the SPLM/A-IO members for the peace celebration in Juba but the program in Juba is entirely in the hands of the regime,” group spokesman Lam Paul Gabriel said.

Under pressure from the United Nations, the United States and other Western donors, Machar and other insurgent factions signed a peace deal with the government in August after a string of failed talks and accords.

Machar fled to neighboring Democratic republic of Congo in 2016 months after an earlier peace deal collapsed. He later traveled to South Africa where he was held under house arrest until peace talks started again in June, sponsored by regional bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011 after decades of north-south war fueled by oil, ethnicity and religion.

Sheikhupura woman shoots husband dead, says she suffered years of abuse
[DAWN] A woman shot her husband dead in Punjab's Sheikhupura district, allegedly in reaction to being routinely abused by him, police said on Tuesday.

Police have taken the woman into custody. She has 'confessed' to killing her husband, 70-year-old Asghar alias Kalu.

A case has been registered.

The dear departed had married a total of eight times. Two of his wives had passed away, Station House Office Latif Gujjar of Housing Colony Police Station told DawnNewsTV. The man had been living with his six wives and 17 children in a single house in Alif Town.

The suspect told news hounds at the cop shoppe that she was married to Asghar around 15 years ago and they had two children.

"My husband used to beat me up and torture me," she said, adding that he last assaulted her 2 days ago.

When Asghar came home around midnight on Monday, she laced the juice she served to him with intoxicants, the woman said.

"[I] shot him at 5 in the morning, which led to his death," she said.

SHO Gujjar said police discovered the man's body at the house. "The woman was present at the scene of the crime and confessed to killing him," he said.

The man was shot in the head, the SHO said. The pistol used for the killing was also recovered.

Journalist, two policemen killed in 'Maoist rebel attack' in India
[DAWN] Suspected Maoist rebels ambushed a convoy on Tuesday in a restive Indian state, killing two coppers and a journalist from the national broadcaster covering the lead up to local elections next month.

The cameraman was escorting police on a patrol in a remote stretch of Chhattisgarh, in central India, when their vehicles were attacked by gunnies.

Police claimed the shooters were Maoists, also known as Naxals, who have been waging an insurgency against Indian rule in a forested belt of the country dubbed the "red corridor" for decades.

"A sub-inspector, a constable and a cameraman have been killed," Ratan Lal Dangi, a senior state police officer, told AFP.

Two others were maimed in the attack.

Zarif acknowledges impact of US sanctions on Iran’s economy
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Just days before the start of a second round of US sanctions on Iran’s oil sector, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif confessed the sanctions would affect his country economically, but would not change Tehran’s policies, warning Washington of the futility such actions.

"Sanctions will have an economic impact, but they will not change policy. The United States must learn that," Zarif told CBS News in Tehran on Sunday.

"The US has an addiction to sanctions and they believe that the sanctions are the panacea that resolve all the problems. They don’t. They in fact hurt people and we have an obligation as a government to minimize the impact on the people. But sanctions never change policy."

"This agreement is the best and there can be no better," Zarif said.

Washington reintroduced sanctions against Iran’s currency trade, metals and auto sectors in August after it pulled out from a multinational 2015 deal that lifted sanctions in return for limits on Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump complained that the deal, approved by his predecessor Barack Obama
That’s just how white folks will do you....
, does not cover Iran’s ballistic missiles, its role in regional wars or what happens after the nuclear pact begins to expire in 2025.

"The world community has stood up to the U.S. sanctions," Zarif said, after a trilateral meeting between Iran, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
and Azerbaijan’s foreign minister.

"The neighboring countries and Europeans nations have resisted against Washington’s unilateral measures."

Blast kills three in Iraq, ISIS claims attack
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Three Shiite Moslem pilgrims were killed by a roadside kaboom as they walked to a holy site near the northeastern Iraqi city of Khanaqin on Tuesday, police said.

ISIS grabbed credit for the attack, the group’s news agency Amaq reported.

The claim could not immediately be verified. The Sunni Moslem bully boyz are active in the area and have targeted Shiite pilgrims in the past.

ISIS has waged a campaign of kidnappings and killings since its self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq and neighboring Syria collapsed in 2017.

Jamaat expresses concern over cabinet approval of EVMs
[Dhaka Tribune] Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
has expressed concerns over the cabinet’s final approval of three amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) 1972; allowing for the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the upcoming 11th national election.

The proposed Representation of the People’s (Amendment) Act 2018 was approved on Monday.

In a blurb issued on Tuesday, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat, Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan said: "I am expressing my concerns over cabinet’s approval of the RPO amendments in favour of EVMs, ignoring the opinions of most opposition parties, civil society, and experts.

"I have no doubts that the government has ill intentions regarding the use of EVMs in the upcoming parliamentary election‐disregarding the opinions of almost every quarter."

Alleging that the government and the Election Commission are engaged in a conspiracy to ensure Awami League’s victory in the next election, the blurb said: "The government and the commission have ulterior political motives for using the EVMs.

"They want to deceive the people and win the polls by any means necessary."

Egypt prosecution refers 43 to military court over 2017 Wahat terrorist attack
[Al Ahram] Egypt's Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadek referred to military trial on Monday 43 defendants accused of being involved in the deadly Wahat terrorist attack that killed 16 coppers and left 13 injured in late 2017. According to the prosecution, the defendants, two of whom are runaways, include members of the terrorist group ISIS, as well as known terrorist, Abdel-Rahim al-Mesmary, who is a Libyan national.

In October 2017, 11 coppers, four conscripts and one sergeant were killed in a shootout while raiding a terrorist hideout in Bahariya Oasis, about 135 kilometres (83 miles) southwest of Cairo.

The ministry of interior said at the time that 15 bad boyz were potted during the shootout.

The prosecutors have charged al-Mesmary and the other defendants in the case with premeditated murder, attempted murder, memberhip in a terrorist group and attacks on army and police personnel, among other charges.

A police officer, Mohammed El-Hayes, was kidnapped by snuffies during the shootout, but the Egyptian army and police rescued him in a joint operation later that month.

Following the shootout, Egyptian security forces launched a number of operations targeting hideouts in the Western Desert area, during which numerous bad boyz were potted, according to officials.

Earlier this month, the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced that Hesham El-Ashmawy, a runaway Egyptian terrorist who is believed to be have been involved in the Wahat attack, was apprehended in Derna.

Bahrain court gives life sentence to over dozen anti-regime activists
[PRESSTV] court in Bahrain has sentenced 13 anti-regime protesters to life imprisonment as the ruling Al Khalifah regime presses ahead with its heavy-handed clampdown on political dissidents and pro-democracy campaigners in the Persian Gulf kingdom.

On Tuesday, Bahrain's Fourth High Criminal Court found the defendants guilty over their membership in the al-Ashtar Brigades, which the Manama regime has designated as a terrorist organization, Arabic-language Lualua television network reported.

The court also revoked the citizenship of eleven of the convicts, and ordered seven of them to pay a fine of 700,000 dinars ($1.857 million) altogether.

Two other dissidents, among them an Asian national, were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.

They are demanding that the Al Khalifah regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.

Mobster 'Whitey' Bulger killed in prison at 89 years old: reports
[Al Jazeera] James "Whitey" Bulger, who lived a double life as one of Boston's most notorious mobsters and as a secret FBI informant before going on the run for 16 years, was found dead at a federal prison in West Virginia, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said.

The FBI was looking into Bulger's death, the Bureau of Prisons said in its statement on Tuesday.

Bulger's death at age 89 came a day after he was transferred to the high-security prison. Federal officials did not give a cause of death but the Bureau of Prisons said no other inmates or staff were injured.

CNN and the Boston Globe reported that Bulger was killed without giving further details.

Henry Brennan, a defence lawyer for Bulger, said in an email he could not confirm or deny the reports.

Bulger was convicted in August 2013 of 11 murders, among other charges including racketeering, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years.

Prison had been something Bulger had gone to great lengths to avoid - killing potential witnesses, cultivating corrupt lawmen and living as a fugitive for 16 years. It all ended when a tip from a former Icelandic beauty queen led to his capture in June 2011 in Santa Monica, California, where he was living with a long-time girlfriend.

Bulger and his Winter Hill gang had operated for more than two decades in the insular Irish-dominated South Boston neighbourhood, engaging in loan sharking, gambling, extortion, drug dealing and murder.

They did so with the tacit approval of an FBI agent who looked the other way when it came to Bulger's crimes so that he would supply information on other gangsters.

Whitey Bulger Was About to Dish On The FBI Informant Program

[DailyMail] Law enforcement sources tell DailyMail.com that Whitey had been talking about outing people in the top echelon of the controversial FBI informant program.

It may not be a coincidence that US Rep. Stephen Lynch is from Southie, Bulger's old turf.

The Massachusetts Democrat last year introduced the Confidential Informant Accountability Act - which calls for congressional oversight into the selection and use of confidential informants. It's possible that Bulger was set to open up to someone on Lynch's team with claims of abuses in the program.

#1  There seems to be two explanations about Bulger's death - a mob hit by a connected prisoner or negligence / deliberate malfeasance by certain former Boston area US Attorneys. Both explanations are plausible.

Without further research, I tend to discount the alleged (direct) connection between Lynch & Bulger - their age difference alone explains that.

#2  I should expand on that a bit - the unusual movement of a 89 year-old wheelchair bound inmate with a well-known heart problem from a Florida prison to an Oklahoma prison and then to a West Virginia prison (where three prisoners just happened to have been murdered in recent months) in a matter of weeks makes it plausible to think the FBI moved him there on purpose to avoid Bulger revealing certain embarrassing information about that organization.

Former LHC judge shot dead in Chakwal
[DAWN] Chaudhry Mehmood Akhtar, a former judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC), was rubbed out in the jurisdiction of Jatli cop shoppe in Chakwal on Tuesday.

Police said the former LHC judge was on his way back to Chakwal from his native town. When he reached Tarkawal Mor near Jatli, some unidentified armed attackers opened fire on his car.

As a result, Akhtar went titzup while his niece Sajjida received bullet injuries.

Upon receiving information of the incident, the Rescue-1122 team rushed to the scene and shifted the body to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Gujjar Khan, while the injured was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Chakwal.

The Rawalpindi police chief took notice of the incident and formed two teams to probe the murder which will be headed by Station House Officer (SHO) Mandra and SHO Jatli, respectively.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry expressed regret and condemned the killing of the former judge. He provided assurances that those behind the murder will be brought to justice soon.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, Gloria slowly backed away from the eight-foot bull frog. If the creature croaked she would surely be deafened...
the Pakistain Bar Council also condemned the incident, which "raises questions on the blatant failure of security and law enforcement agencies".

Officer Shoots Suspect While Being Dragged By Vehicle
[BALTIMORE.CBSLOCAL] Police say an officer shot a suspect while being dragged by a vehicle in Baltimore County Monday evening.

This shooting happened in the 2400 block of Cleanleigh Dr., just after 8:30 p.m.

A Baltimore County Police Department officer was working security in the nearby shopping center, when he was told about a vehicle driving erratically in the parking lot.

The officer spotted the vehicle, a black SUV, and went to talk with the driver in front of the ShopRite.

The driver of the black SUV had the door open while talking to the officer, but later accelerated, dragging the officer. The officer fired an unknown number of shots, and at least one hit the driver of the black SUV.

A white vehicle was heading in the opposite direction, and the officer was in between both of those cars, according to Baltimore Co. PD Cpl. Shawn Vinson.

The black SUV continued through the parking lot and became disabled after crashing into a parked car.

Police say the driver of the SUV is in grave condition, and the officer involved was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer did not have a body camera on.

CDC's handling of polio-like illness criticized by its own advisers
Albany, Oregon (CNN)The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's own medical advisers are criticizing the federal health agency for being slow to respond to a polio-like disease that's struck hundreds of children over the past six years.

"Frustrated and disappointed -- I think that's exactly how most of us feel," said Dr. Keith Van Haren, one of the CDC advisers on AFM and an assistant professor of neurology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Van Haren and other doctors who care for these children say the agency has been slow to gather data and to guide pediatricians and emergency room physicians on how to diagnose and treat the children struck with the disease, acute flaccid myelitis.
"This is the CDC's job. This is what they're supposed to do well. And it's a source of frustration to many of us that they're apparently not doing these things," said Dr. Kenneth Tyler, a professor and chair of the department of neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and another adviser to the CDC on AFM.

Trump sues Stormy Daniels over $300K in legal fees
*Snicker* Consequences.
[NYPOST] President Trump is going after porn star Stormy Daniels for $300,000 in legal fees after a federal judge threw out her defamation suit against him, according to a report on Tuesday.

Trump’s lawyers in a court filing argued that they want $341,559.50 in attorney’s fees from Daniels, who alleged she had a sexual affair with the president in 2006, the Washington Examiner reported.

Daniels "filed this action, not because it had any merit, but instead for the ulterior purposes of raising her media profile, engaging in political attacks against the president by herself and her attorney, who has appeared on more than 150 national television news interviews attacking the President and now is exploring a run for the presidency himself in 2020," the documents filed Monday in Los Angeles federal court say.

"This is a number created out of whole cloth," her lawyer Michael Avenatti said in a statement to the newspaper. "And it is nothing compared to what he will owe my client from the main NDA case."

Kentucky shooting being investigated as hate crime
Worth noting that the shooter's ex-wife and child both are black. This story is the least agenda laden story I could find.
[CBSNews] JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. -- A federal prosecutor says the shooting at a Kentucky grocery store that left two people dead is being investigated as a possible hate crime. Fifty-one-year-old Gregory Bush has been charged with murder and other crimes in the fatal shooting of two shoppers at a Kroger store on Wednesday afternoon.

Both victims were black. Bush is white.

U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman in Louisville said Friday that federal investigators are examining if there were any violations of federal law, "which includes potential civil rights violations such as hate crimes." The FBI is investigating alongside local police.

Coleman said in a prepared statement that the shootings "are not being taken lightly by the United States government."

Russia's Dry Dock Accident Could Have Far Larger Repercussions Than A Damaged Carrier
[TheDrive] Russia's biggest dry dock has completely sunk and it's debatable if it has anything that could fully replace it anytime in the foreseeable future.

A day after Russia's massive PD-50 drydock suddenly sank underneath the country's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, as it was receiving a long-awaited overhaul in frigid Murmansk, just how big a deal this may end up being for the Russian Navy is becoming clearer. The dry dock, which is the largest of its kind in Russian hands, appears to have sunk at first on a steep incline before it disappeared totally beneath the water's surface. Russian officials are now saying that it could be many months before it is raised from the seabed 160 feet below and that doing so would be a very tedious and delicate operation. That's if they decide to salvage it at all.

Regardless, PD-50 services all types of vessels that make up Russia's most powerful fleet, including its largest submarines. So leaving it out of action for years, or even losing it altogether, would be a major hit for the Northern Fleet and the Russian Navy's overall readiness.

Interstate 85 traffic stop linked to possible human smuggling, ICE spokeswoman confirms
[IndependentMail] A traffic stop along Interstate 85 in Anderson County late Monday that led to an investigation by federal authorities is tied to possible human smuggling, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to the Independent Mail on Tuesday.

What began as routine traffic stop for a pickup truck that wasn't staying in its lane near rural Townville quickly turned into something larger, local authorities said.

"ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations received a call from local law enforcement regarding possible human smuggling activity," Carissa Cutrell, a spokeswoman from ICE, said in an email.

Cutrell said three passengers in the vehicle were being driven from Texas to Virginia. The driver was released, and two other passengers in the vehicle were taken to a bus station to continue their trip, Cutrell said.

One passenger in the truck was arrested and charged with illegal re-entry, she said.

The identity of the person arrested and the identities of the other people in the vehicle have not yet been made public.

Minister Says Tunisia Woman's Suicide Bombing 'Isolated Act'
[An Nahar] A suicide kaboom by an unemployed graduate woman on a busy street in the Tunisian capital this week was an "isolated act," a government minister said Tuesday.

Mna Guebla detonated explosives Monday near a gathering of police cars in the upmarket Avenue Habib Bourguiba in central Tunis, wounding 15 officers and two teenagers in the first such attack in the city since 2015.

Interior Minister Hichem Fourati, whose ministry is on the same street, said Guebla was not on a watch-list of potential murderous Moslems "and was not known for her religious background or affiliation."

"It was an isolated act, the security services were on the alert, they intervened very quickly," he told AFP.

Police sources said the assailant appeared to have used a homemade bomb rather than an boom belt.

Guebla, from the eastern region of Mahdia, was an unemployed business English graduate aged 30, said prosecution front man Sofiene Sliti, who also represents the country's anti-terrorism unit.

Her family said that in the three years since she graduated, she had been unable to find a job in that field and had instead occasionally worked as a shepherdess.

Eight years since a revolution that toppled longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia's economy is stagnant and around a third of young graduates are unemployed.

‘Taliban Five,’ Once Held at Guantanamo, Join Insurgency’s Political Office in Qatar
[WSJ] Leading members of the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
who were once held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay have joined the group’s political office in the Gulf nation of Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, according to sources inside the Taliban, a potentially important development in tentative peace talks now under way between the insurgency and Washington.

The move follows two rounds of talks between the Taliban and American officials in Qatar in July and October. Freeing the "Taliban Five" and bringing them into the political process appears to be a significant concession from the U.S. side. It had been a longstanding demand from the Taliban that was previously opposed by the White House.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the Trump administration approved the move or was aware of it. There was no immediate comment from Qatar.

Four of the men are very senior members of the Taliban. Joining the group’s political representatives in Doha significantly boosts the standing of that office, which could enable a more serious political dialogue with Washington.

They include the former head of the Taliban’s army, Mohammad Fazl. A senior military figure, he could help carry the movement’s dominant military side into the grinding of the peace processor, analysts say. It isn’t clear how much the Taliban’s military commanders support the peace dialogue.

The men were released from Guantanamo in 2014 by the U.S. in exchange for an American soldier held by the Taliban in Afghanistan, Bowe Bergdahl, and sent to Qatar. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
until now, they lived under guard in their homes in the Gulf state. They weren’t allowed to hold political meetings or travel.

At an induction ceremony on Monday at the compound in Doha that houses the offices and living quarters of Taliban political representatives, they joined the Qatar office, Taliban front man Zabiullah Mujahid said.

"They have been appointed as members of political office in Doha," Mr. Mujahid said.

Trump vows to end birthright citizenship in challenge to 14th Amendment
[NYPOST] President Trump said he’ll sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship for babies of non-citizens or illegal immigrants colonists born on US soil ‐ an action that could spark a heated constitutional battle.

"We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States ... with all of those benefits," Trump told "Axios on HBO" in a snippet of an interview that aired Tuesday. "It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end."

"It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t," Trump continued, claiming an executive order would be sufficient to change the policy.

Questioned that such an action was in dispute, Trump replied: "You can definitely do it with an Act of Congress. But now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order."

Trump’s comments come as he tries to focus the debate on immigration and a caravan of Central American migrants colonists heading to the US border as the country a week before the midterm elections reels from the massacre of 11 worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue and pipe-bomb mailings to a number of prominent Democrats.
Fox News adds:
Michael Anton, a former national security adviser for Trump, pointed out in July that "there’s a clause in the middle of the amendment that people ignore or they misinterpret ‐ subject to the jurisdiction thereof."

"What they are saying is, if you are born on U.S. soil subject to the jurisdiction of the United States ‐ meaning you’re the child of citizens or the child of legal immigrants colonists, then you are entitled to citizenship," Anton told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson in July. "If you are here illegally, if you owe allegiance to a foreign nation, if you’re the citizen of a foreign country, that clause does not apply to you."
Of course the President's loyal supporter and Republican party champion, Speaker of The House Paul Ryan says it cannot be done.
That remains to be seen. In the meantime, and more importantly, the news that President Trump has announced his intention will cause a recalibration of plans across the migrating world.

#1  You mean the 14th Amendment that SCOTUS suspended the 'equal protection before the law regardless of race' for 'affirmative action' to correct a 'historic wrong' and has spent its time for over half a century hemming and hawing about excuses rather than ending their action that is clearly against the text of the document?

The historical and textural intent was to prevent newly freed slaves from being disenfranchised as non-American. That was achieved. The interpenetration we have about foreigners today is just that an interpretation done through the judiciary.

There must be a principle in the action. You have a glaring problem that arises if simply being within the border make one a citizen. Since the end of WWII, we've had hundreds of thousands of American service families deployed and living overseas giving birth in foreign countries, not counting probably an similar number of 'love children' fathered by American service personnel.

Choose.

If the child is born in the sovereign territory of a state, that child is of that country.

If by birth through one parent is an American then the child is American.

We don't want principles. We want what we want regardless of whatever. As amply demonstrated by SCOTUS' continuing rationales used to extend affirmative action in one guise or another.

#4  The 14th was put in place to make sure the slaves became citizens after the civil war. In 1965, Kennedy bastardized it to get open borders.

While I could see a EO being used for say, 120 halt on citizenship for children born from Iranian nationals, I can't see one standing up to the legal challenges if it lasted longer.

Congress can define when citizenship does take effect and this is something they need to do. For example:

A child born from one or two US citizens is bestowed US citizenship.

A child born a non citizen is granted the same status as the parent.
Green card holders and visa holders have the same protection and rights bestowed on the child.
A non citizen going through the naturalization process will have the same protection and rights bestowed on the child, and when naturalization is complete, citizenship will be bestowed on the child.

Pretty simple and stops anchor babies while not violating the 14th amendment.

#5  I agree with Darth on this.

Whatever E.O. comes out of the WH needs to be narrowly written. It will immediately face legal challenge in District court, likely in a venue held by leftists.

But's Darth's proposal would be far superior to any EO.

#6  It just occurred to me that this might all be designed to settle legal citizenship issues before 2024. Any executive order would immediately be challenged and should get to the Supreme before then.

#7  The first amendment is to section one, declaring that all "persons born in the United States and Subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the States wherein they reside. I do not propose to say anything on that subject except that the question of citizenship has been fully discussed in this body as not to need any further elucidation, in my opinion. This amendment which I have offered is simply declaratory of what I regard as the law of the land already, that every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country.

Mashal murder case: PHC upholds suspension of 25 convicts' sentences
[DAWN] The Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court (PHC) on Tuesday upheld its Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
circuit bench's decision to suspend the three-year jail terms handed to 25 people in the Mashal Khan lynching case.

On February 7 this year, a Haripur Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had ruled on the 2017 lynching and murder of Mashal Khan, and handed the shooter ‐ Imran Ali ‐ two death sentences, five persons multiple terms of life imprisonment, and 25 others jail sentences.

On February 27, the PHC's Abbottabad circuit bench had suspended the multi-year sentences handed to the 25 ‐ against which the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and Mashal's family had filed review petitions.

Under PHC Chief Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth's stewardship, a two-member bench of the court today, in a brief order, set aside the petitions against the suspension of the sentences

Mashal Khan, 23, a student of Mass Communications at Mardan's Abdul Wali Khan University, was beaten and shot to death on April 13, 2017 by his fellow students after he was falsely accused of blasphemy.

The lynching took place within the premises of the university and was caught on video, which later circulated widely on social media.

The horrific incident had shocked the nation and sparked a debate over the misuse of the blasphemy laws in Pakistain.

Yemeni army advances in Hodeidah, seizes significant territory in Saada
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Yemeni armed forces continue to advance in battles against the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias on several fronts in the west coast, where they inflicted heavy losses on the Houthis.

Sources said on Monday that the battles, which are aided by the Arab coalition fighter jets, extended to neighborhoods north of the Hodeidah Airport and the university’s surrounding.

The Giants’ Brigade made incursions in the area of Kilo 16 at the eastern entrance of Hodeidah and deterred Houthi attacks.

The Arab coalition fighter jets also launched Arclight airstrikes on the Houthi militias’ posts in the areas of Kilo 16 and Kilo 10 east of Hodeidah killing around 30 Houthi fighters and injuring dozens others.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake...
in Saada, the Yemeni army’s Orouba Brigade seized control over significant heights on Almalaheeth front, the center of Al Dhaher District, northwest of Saada.

This comes after violent battles which the army fought against the Houthis in the area.

Orouba Brigade commander Major General Abdulkarim al-Saadi said his forces, aided by the coalition, managed to cut off the militia route of supplies that links between Almalaheeth and Marran Mountains, the latter being the stronghold of Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi.

Sources added that the army also deterred Houthi’s attempts to infiltrate army posts and restore posts they previously held.

The Yemeni army’s battles have been ongoing for months now and it has managed to regain control over most of Al Dhaher District and to advance towards the Marran Heights which are considered as one of the most important military strongholds of the militias in Saada.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hundreds of Kurdish fighters arrive in eastern Syria to help fight ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Hundreds of Kurdish fighters have arrived in eastern Syria to help a US-backed alliance fight ISIS after a major setback last week, a monitor said Tuesday.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-Arab alliance backed by the US-led coalition, launched an offensive on September 10 to expel ISIS from their holdout of Hajin on the Iraqi border.

They advanced slowly with support from coalition air strikes, but faced sand storms and a vicious fightback including jacket wallahs, which forced them to retreat on Sunday.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitor, at least 72 SDF fighters were killed in last week’s ISIS counter-attack, one of the Death Eater group’s deadliest operations this year.

The monitoring group said hundreds of Kurdish fighters, men and women, had arrived on the outskirts of the Hajin pocket since then.

"Since Sunday, over two days, 500 fighters from the Kurdish special forces, the People’s Protection Units and the Women’s Protection Units have been sent," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Later on Tuesday, he said "at least 100 SDF fighters" had arrived from the northern city of Manbij, bringing the total number of reinforcements to arrive over the past two days to 600.

Several thousand SDF fighters were already present in the area, he said.

An SDF front man said Kurdish fighters "experienced in fighting ISIS" had been sent as reinforcements to the Hajin front, but said he could not confirm numbers.

"These units will take part in fighting ISIS on the Hajin front," Mustefa Bali said.

On Sunday, an SDF commander told AFP that military reinforcements and heavy weapons had been sent to the front.

He said the alliance would launch a new assault as soon as the reinforcements had arrived.

Coalition strikes on the area Tuesday killed at least nine Death Eaters, the Observatory said.

More than 300 SDF fighters and around 500 ISIS bully boyz have been killed in the past seven weeks of fighting, according to the monitor.

The coalition estimates that 2,000 ISIS turbans remain in the Hajin area.

ISIS overran large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a "caliphate" across territory it controlled.

But the Death Eater group has since lost most of that territory to various offensives in both countries.

In Syria, its presence has been reduced to parts of the vast Badia desert and the Hajin pocket.

More than 360,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since Syria’s war erupted in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Europe
Denmark recalls envoy to Iran over foiled assassination plot
[IsraelTimes] Tehran denies planning to kill Iranian opposition figures in Scandinavian country, says allegations part of an European conspiracy against it

Denmark on Tuesday recalled its ambassador to Iran after it accused Tehran of plotting a foiled attack against three Iranians living in the Scandinavian country.

"I have decided to recall Denmark’s ambassador in Tehran for consultations... Denmark can in no way accept that people with ties to Iran’s intelligence service plot attacks against people in Denmark," Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen told news hounds.

The planned operation was "totally unacceptable," he said, adding he was consulting with "partners and allies," including the EU, about possible sanctions.

Earlier Tuesday, the head of Denmark’s intelligence service PET, Finn Borch Andersen, said his agency believed the Iranian intelligence service "was planning an attack in Denmark" against three Iranians suspected of belonging to the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz.

A Norwegian of Iranian origin was nabbed
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
on October 21 and placed in jug, suspected of planning the attack and spying for Iran.

The suspect was detained in Sweden, according to the Swedish security service Sapo.

Iran has denied the Danish allegations, with foreign ministry front man Bahram Ghasemi saying they were part of a European conspiracy against Iran.
"lies, all lies!"
In late September, Tehran accused Denmark, the Netherlands, and Britannia of "hosting several members of the terrorist group" that Iran accuses of being responsible for an attack in the mainly ethnic Arab city of Ahvaz in southwestern Iran.

The September 22 attack, in which five commandos opened fire on a military parade, left 24 people dead.

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group and a separatist Arab group grabbed credit.

- WILL STAND UP TO IRAN -
"It is totally unacceptable that Iran or any other foreign state plans liquidations on Danish soil," Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen wrote on Twitter.

"Further actions against Iran will be discussed in the EU."

In Oslo, where he was participating in a meeting of Northern European leaders, Rasmussen met with British counterpart Theresa May, whom he said expressed "support" for Denmark in the matter.

"In close collaboration with UK and other countries we will stand up to Iran," he added.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US stood behind Denmark.

"We congratulate the government of Denmark on its arrest of an Iranian regime assassin. For nearly 40 years, Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
has been the target of Iran-sponsored terrorist attacks. We call on our allies and partners to confront the full range of Iran’s threats to peace and security," he wrote on Twitter.

Iran’s ambassador to Copenhagen was summoned to the foreign ministry for an explanation on Tuesday.

PET’s announcement ended weeks of media speculation about why Denmark shut down bridges to Sweden and ferries for several hours on September 28 in a massive manhunt that mobilized hundreds of police and the military.

The shutdown was aimed at foiling the Iranian operation, PET acknowledged on Tuesday.

Hang em High!
[AsiaTimes] Surge of hangings in Singapore while Malaysia shuns death penalty.

The young Malaysian, sentenced to death for couriering 7.97 ounces of heroin into the city-state in 2014, was among at least six individuals executed in Singapore this month for drug offenses. His fate was sealed after the President’s Office of Singapore rejected two petitions lodged by family members and civil society groups requesting clemency.

Though the Singapore Prison Service does not routinely release information about imminent executions apart from figures released in its annual report, anti-death penalty activists claim that seven executions have taken place since the beginning of October, including four this week.

WORLD’S STRICTEST DRUG LAWS
Both countries inherited colonial-era capital punishment laws from British rule, which impose the death penalty – carried out by hanging – for crimes such as murder, kidnapping, some firearms offenses, and drug trafficking. Singapore is regarded as having the world’s strictest drug laws and the majority of the country’s execution cases are for drugs offenses.

Those found possessing specific drugs above a prescribed amount are automatically presumed to be traffickers and are subject to the death penalty, a practice that despite attracting foreign criticism and condemnation by international rights groups is seen elsewhere in the region in Vietnam, Indonesia and – until recently – Malaysia.

Malaysia’s decision to pull back from capital punishment is part of broader institutional reform push now being undertaken by the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition, which clinched a historic election victory in May. The new government also intends to repeal the colonial-era Sedition Act, which critics said was long been used to stifle dissent.

#3  In California, bastion of progressive idiots, they had over 600 people on death row, and the last execution was while I was still working in the criminal justice policy agency right at the turn of the century. Death sentences and the appeal process was calculated down to a near exact science, with appeals timed to the last moment, change of venue requests, and easily the average case was over 20 years in the process. So the idea that a system that has far more people die of natural causes than execution has ZERO deterrent effect. Singapore has it right. And the deterrent is powerful, and the recidivism rate is non-existent.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Rejects 'Unrealistic' Demands to Shut Qatar Base
[An Nahar] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has dismissed as "unrealistic" demands to close a military base in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
as sought by a Saudi-led bloc caught up in a row with the emirate, according to reports Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the presence of Ottoman Turkish troops in the gas-rich Gulf country was not connected to the ongoing crisis between the Arab countries.

"We believe this demand is both unrealistic and irrelevant," the Ottoman Turkish minister said, quoted by Qatar's pro-government al-Watan and Qatar Tribune newspapers.

Turkey and Qatar had signed a defense agreement in 2014, "long before the Gulf crisis", he added.

Cavusoglu also said the diplomatic impasse should be resolved without delay.

Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt called for the closure of the Tariq bin Ziyad camp in Doha as part of a string of conditions to end their diplomatic and political isolation of Qatar.

The Saudi-led boycott imposed a blockade on Qatar in June 2017 over allegations the emirate supports radical Islamist groups and is seeking closer ties with regional arch-rival Iran.

Qatar denies the charges, accusing its neighbors of seeking regime change.

Closure of the Ottoman Turkish base was one of 13 demands made by the Saudi-led countries, as well as a call for an end to all military cooperation between Doha and Ankara.

Qatar dismissed those demands as "neither reasonable nor actionable."

It is thought that 3,000 troops Ottoman Turkish troops are on Qatari soil and that the base has a capacity for up to 5,000 military personnel.

Trump's America not the America Sullenberger knows
Yes, it is. It’s just that some people think they’re entitled to be ruder than they used to be.
[DailyMail] Captain 'Sully' Sullenberger has declared 'this is not the America I know and love' in an apparent attack on Donald Trump.

The retired airline pilot, who saved 155 lives by landing a plane on the Hudson River in 2009, wrote an op-ed criticising America's leadership in the Washington Post.

He accused the leadership of being selfish, unfit to rule, immoral and even of working against the US.

He wrote: 'To navigate complex challenges, all leaders must take responsibility and have a moral compass grounded in competence, integrity and concern for the greater good.'

But many in the current leadership are 'cowardly, complicit enablers, acting against the interests of the United States, our allies and democracy; encouraging extremists at home and emboldening our adversaries abroad; and threatening the livability of our planet,' he continued.

#1  If you actually read Sully's piece in the WaPo, he doesn't mention Trump at all. He says, without naming names, that our current 'leadership' sucks, which it indeed does. Quote:
Today, tragically, too many people in power are projecting the worst. Many are cowardly, complicit enablers, acting against the interests of the United States, our allies and democracy; encouraging extremists at home and emboldening our adversaries abroad; and threatening the livability of our planet. Many do not respect the offices they hold; they lack — or disregard — a basic knowledge of history, science and leadership; and they act impulsively, worsening a toxic political environment.

As a result, we are in a struggle for who and what we are as a people. We have lost what in the military we call unit cohesion. The fabric of our nation is under attack, while shame — a timeless beacon of right and wrong — seems dead.

#2  If Sully had written this ten years ago it would be worth the read.
